Operations involving the processing of coal, oxygen, and steam into synthesis gas by means of two pressure-type gasifiers have demonstrated the effect of heat loss and operating variables on carbon gasified and oxygen and coal requirements. Carbon gasified is the fraction of carbon in the coal that is converted to gas. Oxygen and coal requirement is the quantity of each that is needed to produce a unit volume (M std. c.f.) of carbon monoxide and hydrogen. Operating pressure of the gasifiers ranged from 150 to 300 p.s.i.g. and coal was fed at 200 to 500 lb./hr./cu.ft. of reaction-zone space. Oxygen-to-coal ratios were 8.5 to 10.5 std. c.f./lb. Heat loss and residence time have opposite effects on carbon gasified; increasing the heat loss decreases the carbon gasified, but increasing the residence time (by raising the operating pressure or reducing the coal-feed rate) increases the carbon gasified. The effects of these two factors are difficult to separate because they usually change simultaneously. A comparison of the results obtained from the operation of two gasifiers with different levels of heat loss, however, permitted the effect of heat loss to be separated from that of pressure and coal-feed rate. When the results were deter- mined on the basis of constant heat loss, increase of the residence time increased the carbon gasified until the reaction virtually had come to completion. For example, at 150 p.s.i.g., decreasing the coal-feed ratio from 500 lb./hr./cu.ft. to 200 lb./hr./cu.ft. substantially increased the carbon gasified. At 300 p.s.i.g., however, changing the coal-feed rate had little effect on the carbon gasified because the reaction had almost reached completion and further increase in residence time resulted only in a negligible change.

This study was conducted by the Bureau of Mines to determine the effect of steel reheating practices in burning natural gas on the amount of silicon required to prevent the formation of copper on steels containing up to 1 wt-pct Cu. Formation of copper, which causes surface hot shortness, was readily prevented by as little as 0.3 wt-pct Si and by 2 vol-pct excess oxygen in the furnace atmosphere when reheating steels containing up to 0.8 wt-pct Cu. Up to 0.8 wt-pct Si content and careful control of reheating conditions were necessary for steels containing 1 wt-pct Cu. Best conditions for these steels were reheating to 2,200° F (1,205° C) in burning gases containing 2 vol-pct excess oxygen, and then to higher temperatures in gases of 6 vol-pct excess oxygen. Slag and mold wash were not detrimental on steels reheated for 8 hr by a soaking-pit-type furnace schedule, but they were problematical on steels heated for 2 hr by a pusher-type furnace schedule. The effect of silicon contents on scaling rates also was determined.

A study of the high magnification of some inorganic fibers which are found in nature or produced in the laboratory, has been conducted with the electron microscope. This series of electron microqraphs shows the important morphological differences exhibited by potassium-lead silicate, lead-aluminum silicate, chrysotile, wollastonite, silicon nitride, potassium titanate, cobalt chrysotile, magnesio-fluor-richterite, fluor-richterite, refractory oxide fiber, silicon carbide, massive serpentine, and palygorskite. A ribbon or a thin lath 250-2500 A. wide is the structural form of potassium-lead silicate and lead-aluminum silicate. Chrysotile, cobalt chrysotile, and massive serpentine all have a tubular structure and a fairly uniform (150-300 A.) diameter. Wollastonite, potassium titanate, fluor-richterite, and magnesio-richterite crystals have a lath shape, and potassium titanate laths are laminated ribbons. Single fibers of silicon nitride and palygorskite are ribbons, and the silicon nitride sample contains many twins (branching fibers). Palyqorskite fibers are highly flexible and have cross-sectional measurements of 150-300 A. Silicon carbide fibers differ from other fibers because their structure consists of several different forms. The sample used in this study had, predominately, a margarite-type structure. The refractory oxide fiber lost, all its apparent fibrosity after being prepared for electron microscopic examination, and only irregular fragments are visible in the electron micrographs.

"The Cigar Lake project will develop the world’s second largest high grade uranium deposit. The Cigar Lake Phase 1 orebody contains approximately 226 million pounds U3O8 at an average grade of 20.7% U3O8. The mine, to be operated by Cameco Corporation, will use a unique water jet boring mining method to cut previously frozen ore. A distinctive ore handling design is required to handle the high grade ore slurry exiting the mining machines. The ore will be crushed and ground underground, with the ore slurry then pumped to surface. Loaded into purpose-designed containers on tractor-trailer units, the ore slurry will be trucked to Cogema Resources Incorporated’s McClean Lake mill. McClean Lake will leach all of the ore. Forty-three percent of the resulting uranium solution will remain at McClean Lake for processing into yellowcake. The other 57% of the uranium solution will be shipped to Cameco’s Rabbit Lake mill for processing into yellowcake there. Detailed design for the Cigar Lake project is now underway. Barring regulatory or market delays, production could start up as soon as early 2005.INTRODUCTIONThe Athabasca Basin in northern Saskatchewan hosts a number of large uranium mining and milling operations, including Cluff Lake, Key Lake, McArthur River, McClean Lake and Rabbit Lake. Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) spectroscopy, combined with cyclovoltammetry, has been successfully used to study the interactions between ethyl xanthate, heptyl xanthate, dithio-phosphate and propyl trithiocarbonate flotation collectors and a gold surface. Large, easily measurable responses have been obtained in the potential areas where the thiol collectors are known to interact with gold. The four collector types lead to differing SPR maximum values, with longer alkyl chains resulting in higher SPR responses, and the trithiocarbonate leading to the highest response values. The SPR responses differ considerably from the current density response at very anodic and cathodic potentials. There are indications that thiols might still be adsorbed at potentials as low as-300 mV (vs SHE). This paper presents some research results of pile foundation performance. Measurements on the bearing behaviour and driving effects of piles have been carried out during pile testing and pile driving. It has been found that the ratio of end resistance to the ultimate load depends on the pile length, and the ratio in general is less than 40% for single piles. However for pile group, the end resistance seems to be greater than skin friction. The characteristic curves of skin friction and end re­sistance appear as interaction between soils and pile. The contribution of skin friction to the pile bearing capacity not only depends on soil properties but also on the relative position of the soil layer. The pore pressure and the lateral pressure in ground have been observed during the stage of driving piles. Based on the available data, the radius of plastic region and the coefficient of pore pressure A can be found analytically. The pore pressure time process curves which may be used for practice have been predicted by means of numerical method.

A study was carried out to compare the environmental impacts of a number of process routes for lead and zinc metal production from sulphide ores using Life Cycle Assessment methodology and based on average industry data derived from the literature. The processes investigated were:blast furnace production of lead; Imperial Smelting Process for lead and zinc production; and electrowinning of zinc with the mining and mineral processing stages common to all three routes. The effect of a number of process variables, namely ore grade, fuel source for electricity generation and efficiency of generation, on the environmental impacts was also examined. The environmental impact categories considered in the study were:total (or full cycle) energy consumption; Global Warming Potential (GWP); and Acidification Potential (AP). The results of the study show that when produced separately, zinc production is more than twice as energy intensive as lead production (viz 48 and 20 MJ/kg respectively), however when produced jointly by the Imperial Smelting process, the energy intensity of the two metals is not all that dissimilar (viz 36 and 32 MJ/kg respectively). The metal production and refining stage was found to make the greatest contribution to the overall environmental impacts for all three processes. The study also highlighted the importance of taking a life cycle approach when comparing the environmental impacts of different processes.

Many problems were encountered with the mechanical wedge-type splices used for the 15-inch square precast prestressed concrete piles installed at an industrial plant site. Many of the wedges were breaking during installation of the splices and after pile driving resumed following splicing. Dynamic monitoring of the piles and uplift loading tests confirmed that the problems were associated with cracked or damaged wedges. More ductile, annealed wedges were subsequently used, and, while not completely satisfactory, they were found to perform better than the original more brittle wedges. Introduction Long precast prestressed concrete piles were installed to support heavy, settlement-sensitive structures at an industrial plant in Port Alberni, British Columbia, Canada. The piles were driven through soft compressible silts and clays to toe bearing in a dense sand and gravel deposit or on bedrock. Each pile consisted of two or three segments joined with mechanical wedge-type splices trademarked DYN-A-SPLICE. Shortly after construction began, problems arose during pile installation, and these problems were, later, identified to be related to the wedges, or clamps, used to connect the splice plates.

MINE models have three distinct uses: 1. As exhibits in expositions and museums. 2. As exhibits in law suits. 3. As illustrations in teaching mining engineering. All three uses are in a sense educational. The third, or distinctively teaching function, has not been extensively developed in America as it has been abroad, chiefly because of the cost of the models and the scarcity of model makers. In connection with expositions, such as the Columbian, the Louisiana Purchase, and the Panama-Pacific, a number of very good mine and metallurgical models were prepared with funds furnished by State commissions, by mining organizations or mining companies. At the close of these, expositions, some of these models have been deposited in National or State museums or in educational institutions, but too many of them have been lost, or have been stored, away in some mining company's office or in the basement of some State building, where they have been lost sight of and have gradually fallen to pieces. A visitor to a German mining school is impressed by two facts: 1. The mining laboratories are in general inferior to those in America. 2. The mining museums are infinitely superior -to ours, particularly in models exhibited. One may reply to this comparison by saying that a museum is necessarily a work of time. From the historical standpoint this is, of course, true, but it is not necessarily true in connection with a working museum intended to illustrate current practice. For instance, the oldest mining school in Germany, that at Freiberg, has much excellent historical material, but very little on modern practice, while Berlin, one of the youngest German mining schools, has a most extensive and valuable collection of modern appliances and models. This is true in spite of the fact that one of the best-known model shops is at Freiberg, from which many of, the models to be seen in America have come. One of the consequences of globalizing mine finance is a necessity to apply uniform accountancy and valuation standards that are clearly understood and consistently applied by the global investment community. However, each country has unique circumstances, which sometimes make it difficult to align domestic practice with international requirements. South Africa is no exception and issues such as its political history, a taxation regime enforcing different rules on different mineral producers and a unique mineral rights ownership distribution, are barriers to internationalization. The economy is in a transitional phase as a result of the many and diverse policy documents following the change in political dispensation in 1994. Many of these documents have recently been implemented through new legislation and, in the case of mining, negotiations are continuing in order to ensure an acceptable outcome. This paper discusses the challenges that the South African minerals industry faces in the field of mineral property valuation. It draws on international experience and includes a discussion on the unique considerations that the South African mineral property market must take into account in establishing a code for this purpose, as such a code could later be aligned with international practice.

In anticipation of the flooding of an adjacent dolomitic groundwater compartment, five rough parallel sided boundary plugs at 58 and 50levels have been designed to resist safely hydrostatic heads of 1500and 1250 metres, respectively, over a service life of 100 years. Following a description of the engineering properties of the surrounding rocks, the paper details the design considerations relating to structural length and strength, hydraulic gradient, rock mass watertightness, constituent materials of mortar intruded concrete, pregrouting of permeable discontinuities within the surrounding rock mass, a bentonite barrier to resist aggressive mine water, plug tightening and design performance requirements. Routine quality control tests include permeability of the rock mass, fluidity, bleed and strength development of the intruded mortar, and temperature of the intruded concrete during curing. A special test programme includes determination of strength and stiffness of cored concrete and rock samples, shear strength of the rock/plug interface and associated in situ contact stress in order toe stimate the load safety factor against plug failure by shear.

Underground Mine Drainage may be conveniently divided into two operations:(a) Collecting and transporting drainage water to the pump eastern.(b) Elevating water to the surfacc by pumping.This short paper describes a system which automatically performs operation "a" and which has been developed on the South mine at Broken Hill, under the supervision of the mine foreman, Mr. F. McDonell. The multi-gravity separator (MGS) is a novel piece of equipment for the separation of fine and ultra-fine minerals. However, the published literature does not demonstrate its use in the separation of coal fines. Therefore, an attempt was made to study the effects of different process variables on the performance of an MGS for the beneficiation of coal fines. The results obtained from this study revealed that among the parameters studied, drum rotation and feed solids concentration play dominating roles in controlling the yield and ash content of the clean coal. Mathematical modeling equations that correlate the variables studied and the yield and ash contents of the clean coal were developed to predict the performance of an MGS under different operating and design conditions. The entire exercise revealed that the MGS could produce a clean coal with an ash content of 14.67% and a yield of 71.23% from a feed coal having an ash content of 24.61%.

Working in thick coal seams presents many problems, included in these is obtaining the maximum recovery of coal under safe working conditions. In order to obtain maximum extraction it is important to understand the behaviour of pillars left for support purposes. However it is not always the practice to maintain pillar stability it is often required to design for pillar failure. The greatest hazard of pillar mining is uncontrolled pillar collapse. Many major and relatively minor collapses of pillar workings have been recorded in the history of mining. Notable among the collapses was that at Coalbrook Colliery in South Africa in 1960 (Bryan et al 1964). This led to recommendations on the design of bard and pillar workings in South Africa. (Salamon 1967) These design recommendations were based on the statistical analysis of stable and unstable pillar workings and introduced the concept of probability of pillar failure and safety factor. On the basis of this study a safety factor of 1.6 was prescribed for production panels in South Africa. A general review of pillar design procedures, reveals that a new phase of reinterpretation and modification is in progress. This takes into account for instance the effect method of working, whether by conventional drilling and blasting or continuous miner, has on coal pillar strength, and the necessity to review the methods for increasing depth of working. Also, as more is being understood about overall rock mass properties and advanced computer modelling techniques become more readily available, the mine planning engineer is faced with numerous approaches to pillar design.

"Flotation plants typically aim to maximise recovery at or above a target grade. As the ore from the mine varies, operators increase or decrease the mass pull in different flotation banks by adjusting air and level set points in order to achieve target concentrate grade. A methodology has been developed to maximise overall recovery at target grade by determining the optimal mass pull for each bank. However, the approach of targeting equal grade for each ore type in the deposit leads to sub-optimal overall recovery. This is because some ore types sacrifice a large amount of recovery to reach target grade while others easily achieve target grade and can be processed at higher than target grade for little or no loss in recovery. Processing different ore types at different grades and blending the concentrates therefore gives a higher overall recovery.This paper presents a case study where an 80 year production forecast was made for a large Chilean copper concentrator in feasibility stage. A circuit model was created using SGS’s Integrated Geometallurgical Simulator (IGS) for the different ore types to be processed. The model was calibrated from standard rougher flotation tests (MFT), cleaner tests and from the results of plant surveys of similar operations. The pull rates for each bank in the circuit were determined to achieve an optimal graderecovery curve for each ore type. These curves were combined at different concentrate grades for each ore type to obtain the mathematically optimal overall recovery at target grade. The paper shows a methodology for obtaining an optimal combination of operating conditions for each ore type to maximise overall recovery at a set combined concentrate grade."

NPV is a static measure of project value which does not discriminate between levels of internal and external risk in project valuation. Due to current investment project?s characteristics, a much more complex model is needed: one that includes the value of flexibility and the different risk levels associated with variables subject to uncertainty (price, costs, exchange rates, grade and tonnage of the deposits, cut off grade, among many others). Few of these variables present any correlation or can be treated uniformly. In this context, Real Option Valuation (ROV) arose more than a decade ago, as a mainly theoretical model with the potential for simultaneous calculation of the risk associated with such variables. This paper reviews the literature regarding the application of Real Options Valuation in mining, noting the prior focus on external risks, and presents a case study where ROV is applied to quantify risk associated to mine planning.

Rehabilitation, reclamation and restoration are all terms used to describe the repair of land after mining. Here, restoration is used to mean restoring the land's original use, capability or productivity. Effective restoration is dependent on good planning before mining commences and must include a clear definition of post-mining objectives. The physical condition of the land within the mining licence was that of an imperfectly drained soil in permanent pasture, supporting a seasonal supply dairying unit. During the mining process, the soil layers were separated, with the topsoil stockpiled separately. As part of the restoration process, the land was recontoured to encourage surface drainage, with topsoil spread evenly over the recontoured tailings. Low grond pressure machinery was used to minimise soil compaction, with light discing and harrowing used to increase water infiltration. A permanent pasture was sown, with weed species controlled by spraying, both before and after pasture establishment.  Soil testing has been used extensively to ensure there were no nutrient deficiencies that good compromise pasture establishment and performance. Controlled grazing practices were used to ensure that the sown pastures became well established.
