Recent advances in GPS, machine guidance technology and telemetry allow an unprecedented level of control of surface mining operations. GPS technology can now locate the bucket of a shovel or the blade of a dozer within 50mm (2 inches).Some of the outcomes possible are: precise selective mining – even when the ore is visually indistinguishable from waste: tracking grade and tonnage of every ore parcel through the mine: real time productivity monitoring: detailed post accident safety analysis: tracking the movements of every piece of equipment. This paper will consider the contribution that GPS based machine control systems can make to ensuring that surface mining projects deliver the outcomes promised in the feasibility studies. Case studies of installations are presented.

"A computer model has been developed which is capable of evaluating alternative production schedules (long- and short range) of an open pit mine once the ultimate pit limits have been defined. The model user can choose the best alternative according to cash flow considerations and the particular mining conditions. The model involves a combination of simulation for long range production scheduling and linear programming for short range scheduling. IntroductionMining of mineral deposits in such a fashion so that, at depletion the maximum possible profit is realized, has been a very old problem of the mineral industry. In the past, when high-grade ore reserves were readily available and profits were very high, no question of optimum profitability was raised.However, recently the complexity of both open pit and underground mining has been increased tremendously. The additional problems of continuously rising production costs on one hand and of depressed metal prices worldwide on the other, have been demanding optimum profitabiliy from every mining venture .Particularly in the area of open pit mining, the sequence of ore and waste extraction has now become very important since the size of the pits and of the mining equipment has increased enormously. The process of open pit mining involves a continuous change of the open pit surface and there are many feasible plans of extraction which lead to the same final pit shape (ultimate pit limits). Each of these feasible plans generates a production schedule over the entire mine life, which mayor may not be optimal."

The catalysed direct reduction of copper sulphide with carbon and lime was investigated in the range 850-1000 degrees C using Cu2S-CaO-C and Cu2S-4CaO-4C reaction mixtures. The effects of the catalytic additives K2CO3, Li2CO3, Na2CO3, NaF, Na2SO3 and the ternary eutectic (K,Li,Na)2CO3 were determined. Potassium carbonate, sodium fluoride and the ternary appear to be the most effective catalysts for the direct reduction process. The rate enhancement of the catalysed carbothermic reduction of copper sulphide in the presence of lime was explained in terms of the catalysis of the Boudouard reaction

Experience with knowledge-based systems for Layout planning and roadway support dimensioning is on hand in European coal mining since 1985. The systems SOUT (support choice and dimensioning, 1989), SOUT 2, PLANANK (planning of bolt-support), EXOS (layout planning diagnosis. 1994), Sout 3 (1995) have been developed in close cooperation by CdF1. INERIS2. EMN3 (France) and RAG 4, DMT5, TH - Aachen6 (Germany); ISLSP (Integrated Software for Layout and support planning) development is in progress (completion scheduled for July 1996). This new software technology in combination with conventional programming systems. numerical models and existing databases turned out to be suited for setting-up an intelligent decision aid for layout and roadway support planning. The system enhances reliability of planning and optimises the safety-to-cost ratio for ? deformation forecast for roadways in seam and surrounding rocks, consideration of the general position of the roadway in the rock mass (zones of increased pressure, position of operating and mined panels). ? support dimensioning ? yielding arches, rigid arches, porch sets, rigid rings, yielding rings and bolting / shotcreting for drifts ? yielding arches, rigid arches and porch sets for roadways in seam ? bolt support for gateroads (assessment of exclusion criteria and calculation of the bolting pattern) ? bolting of face-end zones (feasibility and safety assessment, stability guarantee).

Educational campaigns conducted by the manufacturers of explosives, the Bureau of Mines, mining companies, and safety organizations have contributed greatly in reducing accidents caused by explosives arid blasting. Despite these campaigns and the dissemination of information, accidents from explosives and blasting continue to be the direct cause of scores of fatalities and hundreds of nonfatal accidents annually, not only in the mineral industry but essentially wherever explosives are used. The experience of many mining companies and other users of explosives has proved that accidents from explosives can be prevented or averted by the proper training of employees in the handling and using of explosives and by the enforcement of definite rules and instructions for their use. Unfortunately, throughout the years numerous false impressions and ideas have grown up and around the use of explosives. Many of these can be traced back to the manner in which the users of explosives were originally taught, if instructed at all; and as with many types of misinformation in nearly all walks of life, those false ideas are decidedly persistent and being so cause much damage. Many if not most of the users of explosives gained their knowledge of explosives and blasting by watching others and more or less "absorbing" the procedures and thrones of the other fellow, who acted unconsciously as teacher or instructor. A study of explosives accidents reveals the results of such "teachings" when the causes of the accidents are determined, and as might be expected the results very often are far from good. The Gippsland Basin, southeastern Australia, has an Upper Cainozoic history of episodic change of hydrology and the related environment, reflected in the geomorphology and surficial deposits of the onshore basin and the hydrodynamically controlled accumulations of petroleum of the offshore basin. Succeeding this episodic pattern, man through a number of activities, has had a sudden and major impact on the hydrology and the related environment. Activities include those directly affecting the groundwater system, such as extraction of fossil fuels with the consequent threat of land subsidence; irrigation and clearing of vegetation and the consequent effect of salinisation; change of land use and installation of septic tanks with resulting nitrate pollution; damming of streams and the consequent reduction in the frequency of floods with degradation of the biological Environment; de-snagging streams and construction of cutoffs with increased stream erosion, modifying wetlands including drainage, with the consequent degradation of their ecosystems; and increase in phosphate and nitrate inputs to the coastal lakes with the risk of their eutrophication.

In October 2006, a 7m Double Shield TBM, boring through very poor volcanic formations, was pushed back by fluid mud, which presence had not been detected during previous field investigations, due to the high covers characterizing the majority of the tunnel axis. The present work describes the investigations made to gain better knowledge of the conditions in front and all around the TBM, the special measures implemented, the exploratory and bypass tunnels excavated, the extraordinary occurrences came true during the execution of these tunnels, the drainage campaigns, the design of the chamber excavated to free the TBM, the dismounting and restarting of the TBM.

The current list of permissible explosives includes 124 different brands. Fifteen of these are gelatinous, and the rest are the more commonly used granular ammonium nitrate type. Their rates of detonation range from 1,300 to 5,600 meters per second, and the weights of 1-1/4 x 8-inch cartridges range from 86 to 244 grams. The list of permissible blasting devices includes 1 Cobra, 2 Hydrox, and 9 Cardox models. All of these devices are based on discharge of high-pressure gas from a pressurized shell in a shothole. INTRODUCTION To be approved for use in underground coal mines in the United States, explosives and blasting devices must pass certain schedule tests prescribed by the Bureau of Mines. The explosives listed here were tested under Schedule 1-G,3 which has since been replaced by Schedule 1-H;4 the blasting devices were tested under Schedule 26A.5

The work described in this report was undertaken to evaluate and develop techniques for determining the oxygen content of titanium and titanium alloys. Early investigations of volatilization techniques involving halogenation were unsuccessful. Later efforts were concentrated on evaluating vacuum fusion and inert-gas fusion techniques. Two vacuum fusion methods and an inert-gas fusion method were found to be satisfactory in the 0.02 to 1.00 pct., oxygen range. These methods are described in detail. The coefficient of variation by any of the three methods is approximately 5 pct, While the main portion of this paper is devoted to the vacuum and inert-gas fusion methods, a resume of other suggested methods for analyzing titanium for oxygen also is given. INTRODUCTION The Federal Bureau of Nines has conducted research on titanium metal since 1938. This research included development of the Kroll process for the production of titanium (2)4, various sodium reduction processes for making titanium metal and lower valent titanium chloride-sodium chloride mixtures (17), and a fused salt electrolytic process for Me production of high-purity titanium metal and the recovery of titanium by electrorefining from off-grade materials (20).

"Stillwater Mining commenced mining operations at Nye, Montana in 1987 for the recovery of platinum and palladium. Exploration identified that the J-M Reef extended for 43 km. In 1998 Stillwater Mining made the decision to develop the East Boulder mine complex, located approximately 13 miles from the Stillwater mine complex at Nye, to increase production. This paper describes the design, construction, and start-up of the East Boulder process plant.INTRODUCTIONStillwater Mining Company have been producing Platinum and Palladium from their Nye, Montana operations since 1987. The mine production from Nye had been increased in stages with mine production being delivered through several portals and one vertical shaft.The deposit is narrow veined which prevents the application of bulk mining methods and thus limits the production capabilities.In order to increase the production of platinum (Pt) and palladium (Pd) Stillwater made the decision to access the ore from the J-M Reef from the East Boulder site. The East Boulder mine site is located about 21 km (13 miles) from Nye, however as shown in Figure 1, the travel distance is closer to 188 km (114 miles). Distance, on strike, and space availability at Nye precluded the expansion of the Nye concentrator to handle the increased mining rate and supported the decision to install a new concentrator at East Boulder."

HIGH SPEED RAILWAY NETWORK Spain is a very adequate country to develop the high speed railway network thank to its geographical feature which has a 600km long radius, from Madrid- the capital that covers mostly the whole country. Therefore, the railway is a major competitor of the airline. In Spain, the new access to the north and northwest is nowadays the most important railway project which will allow a significant saving of time in the near future to the central plateau and the northern territories. Time savings as well as strict environmental considerations have been the main objective of various studies during the last decade leading to Guadarrama and Pajares tunnels as ones of the optimum solutions. Cordoba-Malaga high speed railway, the extension of the present Madrid—Sevilleline, through the Abdalajis range and the rail project to cross oriental Pyrenees between Spain and France are another two samples of large tunnels currently underway. In these four projects, the ground already encountered and to be soon encountered is highly variable, from very hard granite and gneiss in Guadarrama and Pertus to very poor argillite in Abdalajis, shale in Pajares and schist in Pertus. A number of faults are also expected. Hence, double shield hard rock TBM has been chosen. Figure 1 shows a general scheme in four projects. These four projects represent a total of 2 × 68 km of which 87 km are under DRAGADOS contracts. PROJECTS UNDERTAKEN BY DRAGADOS Guadarrama Tunnels This project is the longest twin tunnel with 28.377km, in Spain and considered one of the longest in Europe. The operating speed will be 300 km/h. This tunnel will link Madrid and the north territories through Guadarrama range. (Figure 2). The south portal is placed at el. 997.8m above the sea level. The tunnel starts with an inclination of 3‰, increasing until 15‰. After 6,620m length, the tunnel passes under the Morcuera ridge with an overburden of 960m. After 13,400m length, the elevation is 1,024m which is the highest point, and then the tunnel declines with a slope of 9.5‰, 2‰ and 19‰ until the north portal in Segovia province. FROM time to time articles have appeared in the technical press on the interesting subject of surface combustion. The theoretical part of the problem has, for practical purposes, received ample consideration in those articles, but the number of practical applications of surface combustion referred to has generally been very small.It is the writer's object to review some recent developments in surface combustion, and also to try to arrive at an estimate of its advantages and possibilities. It is not necessary for this purpose to dilate upon the phenomenon of surface combustion itself. Many interesting things have been said on the subject by Pro£. W. A. Bone, of Leeds, to whose researches the recent developments are largely due. A few illustrations may make clear what is meant by surface combustion.Prof. Bone, in an experiment, took a platinum crucible, which he heated in the flame of a Meker-burner. Then he turned the gas off for a second, and, opening the stop-cock again, allowed the combustible mixture to impinge upon the crucible, thetemperature of which was still well below the ignition temperature of the gas. Although no flame was visible at this stage, it was soon clear that, nevertheless, the gas and air had continued to combine, as the crucible would attain a red heat after a few seconds.Another instance of surface combustion was shown by a Mr. Fletcher, in 1882. He placed an iron ball, weighing 3 lb., on a slab of fireclay, heated it for a few seconds with a blow-pipe, and blew the flame out, leaving the gas-mixture still...

Laboratory tests were performed to obtain a quantitative description of the effectiveness of sodium sulfate (Na2SO4) for removing copper from molten iron and to determine the effectiveness of Na2SO4 on actual auto scrap. The tests were conducted on induction melted heats of iron averaging 0.58 and 1.50 percent initial copper and on cupola-melted auto scrap containing 0.45 percent initial copper. The Na2SO4 was added in powder form in amounts ranging from 2.9 to 43.8 percent of the weight of iron being treated. The data showed that copper removal for the various Na2SO4 treatments followed a similar trend, regardless of the iron composition that was tested. The equation Y = 1 - e-3.23x approximately reflects the relationship between copper removal and amount of Na2SO4 added, where Y is the fraction of copper removed and x is the ratio of the weight of Na2SO4 added to the weight of metal treated. Copper removals ranged from 3.3 to 74.5 percent and reductions down to less than 0.10 percent final copper were achieved in the auto scrap. Copper removals were generally accompanied by sulfur removal, and initial sulfur contents ranging from 0.10 to 0.20 percent were reduced to as low as 0.02 percent. High temperatures and long slag reaction times tended to induce copper and sulfur reversion from the slag, but, generally, the Na2SO4 treat¬ments were effective up to approximately 2,820° F with reaction times not exceeding 7 minutes.

The Maragorik Prospect represents a partially eroded Pliocene acid sulphate style epithermal gold system hosted within the Sigule Volcanics and Riet Bed sediments which is inferred to have formed from a degassing porphyry body at depth. A regional sinistral rotation provided by transform faults associated with the opening of the Manus Basin imparts a dilational character to mineralised NE trending faults formed parallel to the Warangoi Graben. A controlled-source audio magneto-tellurics (CSAMT) survey has identified E-W trending buried conductors which may represent alteration formed within dilation zones. While some gold mineralisation occurs within vuggy silica at Palang Hill, the target is auriferous enargite (luzonite)-bearing breccias from the LK1 and Gureki areas.

The robustness of the large-sections correction procedure, Hill's fast approximation, Barbery's correction and the PARGEN correction was examined by comparing their ability to reconstruct the true liberation distribution using sectioning data from computer-generated spheres. The results indicate that the flexibility of a correction procedure is related to the assumptions it makes about the continuity of the liberation distribution, locked-particle characteristics and ore texture. Overall, the large-sections procedure appeared to be the most generally applicable. The Hill fast approximation performed well, but this was probably because it partially incorporates the sphere model; the performance of the PARGEN and Barbery corrections varied from case to case.

The deposit lies in amphibolite-facies biotite granite-gneisses of Proterozoic age, 4 km east of a major crustal break known as the Ifewara-Zungeru fault. Gold mineralisation is contained in a zone of quartz-carbonate (mainly calcite) veins and hydrothermally altered gneisses with associated small-scale intrusions along a steeply dipping second-order fault zone that roughly parallels the main fault. Gold is present mainly at grain boundaries between quartz and carbonate as discrete particles up to 100 micrometres in size, in general association with sparse, scattered pyrite, pyrrhotite and some base metal sulphides. Adjacent to the gold-bearing zone the granite-gneisses have been hydrothermally altered with minor volume increase, most notable enrichment being in K2O, S, Pb and Cu (and Au). High concentrations of Th, Y, Ce and Zr in the granite-gneisses imply derivation from S-type granites. It is likely that their high heat production capacity maintained the high temperatures needed to transport gold in the hydrothermal systems. It is most probable that the mineralisation dates from the Pan-African orogeny (650-450 Ma)

This publication describes a study by the Federal Bureau of Mines of devices and methods used for testing and splicing 4,160-volt and 440-volt cables and for providing ground-fault protection for 440-volt circuits, as developed and used by the electrical staff of the Tecumseh coal mine, an open-pit operation at Boonville, Ind. The testing and ground-fault devices described should find ready application in other open-pit mines, and, with suitable modifications for voltages involved, in underground mining. The devices and testing methods are based on sound engineering principles and are time-tested and economically feasible, Four devices are used: A high-voltage tester, and a low-voltage high- current tester, both for testing 4,160-volt cables; a tester for 440-volt cables; and, electronic ground-fault protective device for 440-volt cable circuits. All the cable testers and the grounding device were designed and built at the mine from standard parts. They are inexpensive, dependable, and job tested, An attempt has been made here to describe them in enough detail so that interested persons can assemble duplicate units.

A case study is presented of the mechanical behaviour of fractures in the Westphalian A and B siliciclastic succession of mud-, silt- and sandstones with intercalating coal layers in the Campine basin of northeast Belgium. Mining ceased in the area in 1992 and a pilot well was drilled to assess the feasibility of methane extraction by hydraulic fracturing. Work was carried out to study the influence of types of cement fill in fractures on the shear behaviour of the rocks by comparison with that of the coal seams. X-ray computerised tomography was used for visual appraisal and selection of jointed rocks before destructive shear testing was carried out. Two major type of veins were found to be present, one cemented with carbonate and the other with kaolinite or kaolinite/carbonate. Uniaxial compressive strength and shear tests showed that differentiation of the two types of veins was vital in evaluating the strength of the sandstones, as cementing of the fractures by rigid carbonate minerals can reinstate the strength of the rock masses to that of the intact material. In gasifying pulverized coal with steam and oxygen, the particle size of the coal fed to a gasifier should be as small as economically possible. A potential way to achieve this advantage is to reduce the particle size of the coal by passing the coal-steam mixture at high velocity through a heated tube coil before the mixture enters the gasifier. To evaluate this method the Federal Bureau of Mines flashed coal-water slurries in externally heated metallic tube coils to determine the extent of size reduction. The first of two different laboratory-scale apparatus reduced the average particle diameter of subbituminous C coal from 190 to 110 microns at an outlet velocity of 330 feet per second (f.p.s.). At the same outlet velocity, a second apparatus reduced the average particle diameter from 250 to 140 microns. An increase in velocity produced more finely divided coal, but variation in temperature and pressure had no effect except as they affected velocity. Virtually the same size reduction was noted for five ranks of coal at equal velocities. The rate of increase in particle-size reduction with increase in velocity decreased with a decrease in particle size. The pulverizing mechanism was concluded to be abrasion of the particles with each other and with the tube wall.
