Extensive deposits of brown coal exist in the Gippsland Basin, primarily in the Latrobe Valley. The total quantities of economically winnable coal in this region of Victoria and in other smaller fields are large enough to adequately assure Victoria's future electricity needs and to also provide large quantities for alternative applications, including liquefaction. As a result of the recent conflict in the Middle East attention has again been focussed on the production of synthetic fuels from coal. There have been many investigations over the years into the production of oil from Victorian brown coal. The purpose of this paper is to summarise the scope, objectives and major findings of these studies, with the emphasis on the direct hydrogenation route for converting brown coal to oil. The principal alternative processes are carboniastion and hydrotreatment of the product tar, or gasification and Fischer Tropsch synthesis of liquids from the product gas. The attractions of Victorian brown coal which have encouraged these studies include: ò the vast reserves of Victorian brown coal and the favourable conditions for low cost mining, ò the high quality of the coal (low ash, sulphur and nitrogen contents), ò the high reactivity of the coal giving high yields of product in hydrogenation to liquid fuels, ò the extensive data base available on the resource and its characteristics, and ò the availability of a skilled workforce and extensive infrastructure in the Latrobe Region to support a major resource development project. These advantages have been partially offset by: ò the high moisture content of the brown coal and the cost of drying, and ò the priority previously given to electricity generation in the allocation of the brown coal resource.

The mineralogy of the platinum group metals is fairly complex, and it is therefore not surprising that the different minerals have variable responses to metallurgical processes, in particular, flotation and leaching. The PLATSOL® leach process was developed to extract simultaneously base metals, gold and platinum group metals from various materials. Extensive research has indicated that most PGM?s were amenable to the PLATSOL process, with the notable exception of cooperite PtS. Further work showed that a thermal pretreatment at 500-700ºC transformed the structure of the cooperite and similar refractory minerals (Pt,Pd)S into Pt metal and Pt-Pd alloys that responded well to the PLATSOL® process. Examples are presented of the mineralogy of PGM concentrates as produced, in the residue from the PLATSOL® leach and after thermal pretreatment.

The effect of longwall mining on streams and shallow aquifers has been the subject of numerous research studies for more than twenty years. As a result of these studies, it has become common to consider an overburden thickness of 400 feet as the lower limit at which longwall mining methods may be used with little or no effect on hydrologic systems. This paper presents the results of a study documenting the response of a large high order stream to shallow cover undermining by longwall methods in the northern Appalachian coalfield. The field site is located in a narrow stream valley where the overburden, composed primarily of limestone and sandstone units interbedded with shales and siltstones, ranges in thickness from 340 to 285 feet above the main bench of the Pittsburgh coal seam. Streamflow monitoring and monitor well measurements indicate that no significant loss zones or water table lowering resulted from undermining the stream or the adjacent valley bottom area. Additionally, hydrographs for shallow near-stream wells exhibit fluctuations related to natural seasonal variations, which are nearly identical to those observed in a non-undermined control well in the same watershed. Environmental factors affecting streamflow were monitored through the use of a control stream in an adjacent non-undermined watershed to differentiate between natural and mining induced changes in flow.

This article attempts to outline essential features of the Mount Isa ore deposit, to reveal the agencies thought to be responsible for its localization, and to describe methods used for obtaining and applying geological data on a commercial basis. Structural features are emphasized because they have proved the most useful agencies to date in searching for ore. Vertical depth, horizontal width and stratigraphic thickness are used throughout the article, and quantities are quoted in long tons.THE DEPOSITA width of more than two miles of evenly bedded shale of the Mount Isa series (upper pre-Cambrian) lies sandwiched conformably between quartzites. "Continuous mining systems containing multiple excavators producing multiple products of raw materials are highly complex, exhibiting strong interdependency between constituents. Furthermore, random variables govern the system, which causes uncertainty in the supply of raw materials: uncertainty in knowledge about the reserve, the quantity demanded by the customers, and the breakdown of equipment. This paper presents a stochastic-based mine process simulator capturing different sources of uncertainties. It aims to quantify the effect of geological uncertainty and its impacts on the ability to deliver contractually defined quantities and qualities of coal, and on the system efficiency in terms of utilization of major equipment. Two different areas of research are combined: geostatistical simulation for capturing geological uncertainty, and stochastic process simulation to predict the performance and reliability of a large continuous mining system.The process of modelling and simulation in this specific production environment is discussed in detail. Problem specification and a new integrated simulation approach are presented. A case study in a large coal mine is used to demonstrate the impacts and evaluate the results in terms of reaching optimal production control decisions to increase average equipment utilization and control coal quality and quantity. Mine tailings storage facilities (TSFs) can be a significant source of fine, respirable dust. This dust poses concerns, especially for nearby communities, because of its detrimental impact on respiratory health. To address these concerns, this study examined the effectiveness of commercially available polymers, known for their biocompatible and environmentally friendly features, to prevent dust generation from upstream-type TSFs in active mining operations. It focused on two areas in TSFs: the tailings beach and slope/dike surfaces. Two types of polymers—polyethylene glycol and poloxamer—were selected, and their effectiveness was evaluated in a series of phased laboratory and field tests. The lab tests investigated the moisture-retention capacity of the tailings after treatment with the polymer solutions as well as the ability of these solutions to reduce dust emissions. Polymers were applied to a tailings bed surface in the lab and dust was generated from this surface using a wind tunnel. PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations were measured using laser-diffraction dust sensors, and the polymers were found to have reduced dust emissions up to 95%. Small-scale wind-blowing tests were conducted in the field (specifically, in a controlled environment at a TSF) to evaluate polymer effectiveness on the tailings beach and slope/dike areas. The tests revealed that the AP could efficiently suppress approximately 80% of PM10 and PM2.5 dust emissions at both types of areas. Finally, 1000 gallons of AP solution were discharged at the top of tailings beach and slope/dike areas, respectively, and found to be effective. The results of these tests showed the high potential of the biocompatible polymers to be a feasible solution for reducing the respirable dust emissions from upstream TSFs in arid and semi-arid regions.

Early research showed that the separation of particles based upon their density was not possible in steadily rising air streams. The terminal velocities of moving spheres are determined by their aerodynamic characteristics. This prevents particle separation by density in standard air classifiers. Passive pulsing air classifiers have accelerated airflow in certain regions, which achieves density-dominant separation. Numerical simulation of airflow within passive pulsing air classifiers was done to estimate airflow patterns near a damper. Analysis of those results shows the significant acceleration of the airflow above the damper. Laboratory trial separations have shown that passive pulsing classifiers are superior to standard air classifiers. One of the most effective methods of metal surface heat treatment is through laser hardening. In most cases, laser parameters are determined experimentally, which is expensive and time-consuming. A mathematical model for the surface heat treatment process will allow a significant decrease in costs, and reduce the time required for optimization. In the present work, the authors present a mathematical model for laser heat treatment with forced cooling which can be applied to medium carbon steel. The model is based on a three-dimensional heat transfer equation using Green?s function. The model allows one to calculate the temperature of the treated steel at different depths below the surface with and without cooling, for set values of the laser power and travelling speed, when the heat transfer coefficient is a known constant. It also takes variations in the radiation adsorption coefficient on the metal surface and laser beam spot size into account. The model was illustrated by comparing calculated and experimental temperature profiles of mild carbon steel with 0.5% C with and without cooling. A reasonably good agreement was achieved between experimental and predicted values to ensure that a high enough austenizing temperature with short enough cooling time was reached for direct martensite formation. It also predicted the depth of treatment accurately. The incorporation of cooling in the model substantially improves previous models based on heat transfer only. It delivers a tool that can with a reasonable accuracy predict the depth of surface heat treatment and cooling time required from operational parameters, such as laser power, speed of motion, and distance between laser and cooling source, that can be controlled in the work set-up. The paper outlines events at the Collinsville State Coal Mine, Queensland, leading to the practice of full face multiple shotfiring in bord and pillar development places. The 1954 disaster is referred to, and factors involved in simultaneous shotfiring in coal are discussed. Promising preliminary multiple shotfiring tests at the Colliery are described, as well as the resulting routine measures adopted, and the changes involved. The subsequent inducing of two outbursts under safe conditions by remote multiple shotfiring is given as justification for the changes made.INTRODUCTIONFollowing a disastrous instantaneous outburst (1.0.) of coal and gas at the Collinsville State Coal Mine in 1954, the necessity for inducer shotfiring for the control of possible further outbursts was established. However this mine, immediately classified as gassy after the 1954 outburst, is subject to the general restrictions pertaining to gassy mines which at present preclude the use of inducer shotfiring due particularly to the non-existence of a permitted exploder for more than six shots, and further, because permitted multipleexploders are not designed for remote firing through long lengths of cable. This situation was met by arresting or reducing progress in the production places, thereby reducing the danger of outbursts while means were being considered to achieve overall maximum safety.In August 1957 two full faces were successfully blasted in experimental simultaneous rounds. In 1984, at the request of Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the 13,730-acre Burnt Lodge (MT-065-278) Wilderness Study Area (WSA) in order to evaluate the mineral resources. The WSA is located in Phillips and Valley Counties, MT, about 55 miles south of Malta adjoining the Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge. It is underlain by near horizontal sedimentary beds of the Hell Creek Formation, Fox Hills Sandstone, and Bearpaw Shale. No mines or prospects were found in the WSA. Bentonitic beds were examined, but are generally less than 1 ft thick and, except where exposed, are deeply buried. Kaolin-bearing sandstone in the Colgate Member of the Foxhills Sandstone was sampled and may have potential for use in structural clay products. However, remoteness and inaccessibility of the area make it unlikely that the material could be economically extracted even though some of the material is marginally useful.

The Mineral Processing Plant Design, Practice and Control Conference was held from Oct. 20through 24, 2002, at the Fairmont Hotel, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The conference was attended by nearly 400 of the world’s top mineral-processing specialists, including plant-design engineers, mineral-processing consultants, academics, suppliers and equipment manufacturers. The meeting was sponsored by SME and cosponsored by the Canadian Mineral Processing Division of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM). The conference covered all aspects of mineral-processing design, construction and operation. The meeting included more than 130 technical presentations. Topics included sampling programs, feasibility studies, design criteria, process technologies, construction, start-up operations and shutdowns. To stimulate interaction and discussion throughout the five-day conference, the sessions were presented consecutively. Attendees had the opportunity to attend every session.

An important element of the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) mining research program is the development and evaluation of reliable coal interface detection (CID) systems. Commercially available CID sensors based on natural gamma radiation (NGR) are only applicable if the immediate roof is composed of shaley material. The USBM has made numerous underground and laboratory measurements using several NGR systems approved for installation on mining machines by the Mine Safety and Health Administration. In addition, two small handheld NGR instruments were used to make comparative measurements. Underground NGR measurements in 10 different coal seams, potassium-uranium-thorium radiometric analyses on samples from 16 seams, and chemical analyses of coal and rock for correlation with NGR counts were made. Laboratory test results on the effect of air gap and sample thickness, size, and weight on the NGR measurements, as well as general results of the various NGR systems, are discussed.

Ok Tedi Mining Ltd has been using flotation for the production of copper/gold concentrates from a complex copper sulphide ore for several years. During this period, much effort has been devoted to metall- urgical treatment of the ore. This paper examines some of the mineralogical aspects of the sulphide minerals in the ore using the electron microprobe analyser. Results have revealed the complexity of the copper sulphide minerals and in particular, chalcocite. Analysis of both plant and laboratory flotation products has provided further insight into the effects of mineralogy on the flotation of copper and iron sulphides. A significant observation is that some of the pyrite minerals apparently exhibit natural floatability. The implications of the mineralogical characteristics of the sulphide minerals on the flotation of the ore are also discussed.

Rock mass classification is widely used throughout the underground mining industry—in both coal and hard-rock mines. It is used in all stages of the mining process, from site characterization to production operations. The goal of the International Workshop on Rock Mass Classification in Underground Mining was to provide a forum for leading practitioners of rock mass classification to come together and share their methods and experiences with the technique. The workshop was held in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, on May 31, 2007. It was co-chaired by Christopher Mark, Ph.D., P.E., National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Pittsburgh, PA, and Rimas Pakalnis, P.Eng., University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. The proceedings of the workshop contain 16 invited papers from 9 countries, reflecting the international depth and breadth of current practice. Applications in both hard-rock and coal mining are well represented. Some of the topics that were addressed at the workshop include: • Major rock mass classification systems used in mining and their variants • Collection of input data through observation, rock testing, and geophysics • Design of mine layouts and rock support systems using classification • Estimation of rock mass strength and other input parameters for numerical models from classification • Applications in weak rock, raise boring, cavability assessment, and other special topics • Risk assessment using rock mass classification

In the course of work being carried out in the Lubricants and Bearings Section of the Council lor Scientific and Industrial Research on the production of copper4ead 'bearings for 'use in aircraft, it has been found necessary to develop special metallographic methods. For proper control of the production of steel-backed copper-lead bearings it is necessary to adhere to rigidly controlled conditions, and it is essential that a method of examination be adopted which will readily detect actual defects or any variations in quality. Some defects can be observed with the naked eye, whilst others are detected by radiographic examination. This latter method is invaluable as a rapid, reliable test in the production of aircraft bearings, but it is necessary to observe the structure of the alloys under the microscope, both to be able to interpret the radiograph correctly and to determine what has occurred to the metal during and after solidification. The use of a sound metallographic technique is'particularly important in developmental work and research connected with these bearings.Polishing TechniqueCopper and lead are practically immiscible in the solid state, but whilst they are miscible only in certain limited proportions in the liquid state; consequently "alloys" of copper and lead consist of a mixture of the constituent metals. The metallographic difficulties are obvious. Copper is a relatively tough metal, although it readily scratches, whilst lead is extremely soft and easily deformed. It wouId be expected if any normal polishing technique were applied that the lead would be readily torn out of the surface being prepared, and, in addition, that the lead would tarnish very easily.Grange(2) has described a method by which these difficulties can be overcome. The method involves an etch-polish procedure using "chrome regia" as an etchant for the copper. The chrome regia was a solution of chromium trioxide and hydrochloric acid in water. This type of etchant has been adopted, but it was found necessary to make certain changes.The method now adopted in this laboratory is as follows: The specimen (which is usually mounted in bakelite) is wet ground in a series of successively finer Hydro-Durexsil emery papers down to 60.0· grit paper.The specimen is then etched in the chrome regis, etchant (the composition of this etchant will pe discussed later) for approximately five seconds.Most efficient etching is obtained by swabbing the surface of the specimen...

This paper investigates the effects of solids concentration and the addition of Dispersant S40 on the flowability of original and ground limestone slurries. A rotational viscometer with a concentric cylinder geometry and a controlled-stress rheometer with a cone-and-plate geometry were used to characterize the rheological behaviors of limestone slurries. The rheological behavior of original limestone slurries (<100 µm) is transformed through different types of flows with increasing solids concentration. The use of Dispersant S40 can improve the slurry flowability by decreasing viscosity and eliminating Casson yield stress. It is therefore used as a grinding aid for the wet ultrafine grinding of limestone. The rheological behaviors of ground limestone slurries vary with grinding from a starting dilatant flow-ability to a resulting pseudoplastic one with an evident Casson yield stress in combination with a thixotropic character. The appearance of pseudoplastic flowability combining thixotropy is related to the fineness of a ground product and its specific surface area, which are both correlated to solids concentration and the additive amount of Dispersant S40. In addition, the accurate rheological characterization of time-dependent fluids is dependent on the instruments used and operation conditions.

Rare earth elements (REEs) and their compounds are essential in a multitude of mundane and sophisticated applications such as renewable energy technologies, catalysts, medicine, and defense applications. The global supply deficit could be attributed to the destabilization of REE market that has, as a result, incentivized indigenous production of REEs. Cost-effective and environmentally benign opportunities are being explored for the production of REEs from non-conventional mineral sources including coal and coal by-products to stabilize the supply chain. Coal from Healy coal mine and Wishbone Hill deposits in Alaska have been quantified for REEs and were found to possess elevated total REE concentrations as compared to world average levels (60– 70 ppm). The objective of the study was to concentrate the REEs in the froth phase by froth-flotation of the fine size fraction (< 75 μm). A Box-Behnken design of experiment was employed to ascertain the main and interaction effects of operational parameters on response variable by analyzing 3D response surfaces. Experiments were carried out to maximize REE recovery and concentration by modeling and optimization of three operating variables (frother dosage, pulp density (% solids), and collector dosage). Based on the results, the optimum flotation conditions for maximum recovery at an elevated concentration of REEs in the froth fraction was obtained at 4.2% solids and 32.7 ppm of frother dosage for Healy sample and 10% solids and 37.9 ppm of frother dosage for Wishbone Hill coal sample. The quadratic relationship between the input and response variable was found to be independent of collector dosage suggesting good surface hydrophobicity and floatability of the two coal samples.

This paper presents a theoretical analysis of the effect of shape and size on strength of geologic materials. The results indicate that the shape effect is caused by the development of confining pressure at the interfaces. The linearization of the obtained formula is of the same form determined by experiments. The size effect is attributed to the fact that the geologic materials contain discontinuities in the form of fractures, bedding planes, and cleats. The maximum reduction factor for the size effect is the one-sixth power of the volume of a cubic test specimen. The results of this work are particularly useful in determining the strength of coal pillars in underground mines.

ABSTRACT: Some residential areas of the iron basin of Lorraine (in the North-East of France) are affected by noxious gas emissions (under oxygenated, carbon dioxide loaded and radon loaded gas mixtures). Site investigations showed that the gas flow was mainly due to natural thermal air circulation between old mines and the external atmosphere. The main hazards associated with this flow of gas and its potential accumulation in confined volumes within buildings are asphyxiation and intoxication. A further study is in progress in order to better understand the origin of the gas generation within the old iron mine workings. Following the first hypothesis, the carbon dioxide emission is mainly due to the specific hydro-geo-chemical process associating the pyrite oxidation with the acid dissolution of carbonates. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Einige Wohngebiete der Eisenmulde Lothringen (im Nordöst Frankreich) werden von Ausgasung gesundsheitsschädlichen sauerstoffarmen Mischungen, die mit Kohlendioxid und Radon beladen sind, betroffen. Untersuchungen am Ort haben gezeigt, wie diese Gasstroemung von natürlichem thermischen Luftumlauf zwischen den alten Bergwerken und der externen Atmosphäre ausgelöst wird. Erstickung und Vergiftung sind die wichtigste Risiken, die mit dieser Gasströmung und ihrer möglichen Speicherung in begrenzten Lokalen zusammenhängen. Eine weitere Untersuchung wird durchgefuehrt so dass man die Herkunft der Gaserzeugung in den alten Grubenräume besser versteht. Der ersten Hypothese folgend, Ausgasung von Kohlensäure liegt vor allem an dem hydro-geo-chemischen Prozess, der Pyritrösten mit der säuren Auflösung von Karbonate verbindet SCHLÜSSELWÖRTER: Gas, Ausgasung, Bergwerk, Strömung, Pyrit RESUME: Certaines agglomérations du bassin ferrifère lorrain (au Nord-Est de la France) sont affectées par des émanations de mélanges gazeux sous-oxygénés et chargés en certains gaz nocifs (dioxyde de carbone, radon…). Les investigations effectuées in situ ont montré que les écoulements gazeux à l’origine de ces émanations sont liées au phénomène de tirage naturel entre les anciens travaux miniers et la surface. Les principaux risques engendrés par ces émanations de gaz et son accumulation possible dans des endroits confinés sont l’asphyxie et l’intoxication. Une étude est en cours afin d’expliquer l’origine de la modification de l’air au sein des vieux travaux miniers. Les émissions de dioxyde de carbone seraient dues à des processus hydro-geo-chimiques associant l’oxydation de la pyrite et la dissolution de carbonates.
