Sishen Iron Ore Mine is situated 280 km north-west of Kimberley in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. The mine produces and sells high quality iron ore of various specifications to various national and international clients. The saleable product is derived from the blending and beneficiation of different types and qualities of hematite iron ore. This paper documents the new developments which were implemented (or are in the process of being implemented) on the mine in the long-term planning, medium-term planning, grade control and material tracking in the beneficiation plant with special attention being paid to the quality of the final, saleable product. The process starts with the long-term planning where the pit shell and pit optimization is determined by Whittle 4X. New developments include the introduction of a linear programming based scheduling system to enhance the long-term schedule generated by Whittle 4X. The LP route was decided on in order to take into account all the constraining factors of the final product that could not be configured in Whittle. To complement this the XPAC Auto Scheduler scheduling package was introduced to do the medium-term mine scheduling. This 18-month rolling plan includes cost parameters to enable the planner to extract a detailed operational budget from the scheduling while ensuring that production standards are maintained and grade constraints are met. The existing grade control system was enhanced with GPS capabilities and a computer system to do material tracking. The high precision GPS system introduced on the shovels allows for the accurate control of the loading procedures at the mining face. Because of the complicated geology and grade composition of blasting blocks it is imperative to accurately differentiate between different materials in the same blasting block and being able to excavate that with the loading equipment. The GPS system on the trucks allows for accurate location monitoring of dumping in order to keep track of specific material types. The state-of-the-art material tracking system developed for Sishen will enable the grade control officer to keep track and record various parameters of the material from its in situ position in the blasting blocks, through the crusher and onto different stockpiles, in various stages of the beneficiation process and onto the blending beds, into the dispatching trains and eventually into the ships for international distribution. These developments elevate the Sishen planning and grade control systems to a new level of service excellence from which management can obtain accurate and timely information on product status. It also enables Sishen to maximize resource utilization while still complying with the tough market constraints.

Particles of nickel flash furnace malle (45 per cent i) were oxidized in a dropping-particle furnace. The particles melted and the molten drops simulated those produced by the atomization of molten matte. The partly oxidized droplets were quenched and then reacted with silica flux to form high-grade matte (70 per cent i) and a fayalite slag. This paper describes the experimental equipment and deals with chemical aspects of the investigation such as volatile impurity distribution and thermodynamic considerations. The overall behaviour of minor elements such as Cu, Co, As and Pb was similar to that observed in conventional converting.

The oxidation behaviour of selenide matte with a substantial Cu content and low Ag differs significantly from that of high-Ag matte. Low-Ag selenide mattes display a large oxygen solubility and the upper boundary of the miscibility gap in the Ag-Cu-Se-O system is depressed to quite low Se contents. As a result, the formation of Ag metal is considerably delayed. The oxidised selenide matte, low in Se and with a relatively high oxygen content, has previously been termed oxymelt. With further oxidation, its composition enters the misciblity gap and crude Ag is formed. The sodium silicate slag captures very little of the SeO2 and the dissolved Ag2O(s) content of the slag is relatively small, with a Raoultian activity coefficient of 0.57. This value was found to be independent of the slag's Cu2O content

The 2 360 t/h two module Phola coal preparation plant represents anew era of large plant in the Witbank coalfield designed to extend its life to 2020 and beyond. The plant uses the optimum processing model for Witbank coals, receiving a feed coal size of -50 mm, wet screening it into coarse and small coal fractions 50 x12 and 12 x0.63 mm before processing them in parallel through two primary DM cyclone sections, in order to make a 27.5 MJ/kg export floats product. The sinks are processed through a common high density DM cyclone section to produce a 21.5?23 MJ/kg thermal coal middlings product. The plant design incorporates the largest size DMS equipment used to date in South African coal preparation plants, i.e. 1 150 mm large diameter pump fed DM cyclones and 4.2 m width banana screens. The fine coal is conventionally processed by spirals, whereas the raw coal slimes are filtered using automated plate and frame filter presses and added to either the middlings or discards depending on its quality. The paper describes the database, innovative design concepts, construction, and commissioning.

A unique sluicing process for recovering tailing impounded in a valley was developed by Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Ltd., West Coast Mines, Rosebery, Tasmania.Earthmoving equipment could not be used as most of the material to be recovered was semi-fluid. A conventional sluking method was also impracticable as there was no suitable working face from which the process could be commenced.Operations started from a flat surface, using special techniques for sinking through the tailing and establishing producing working faces as the sinking process continued.After about 2 years the bottom of the dam was reached and conventional sluicing methods could be used.

Incorporating an iron ore pelletising plant, a MIDREX'"' Direct Reduction Plant, and a mini mill, the conversion of iron ore fines to high- quality steel slabs in Western Australia is among the lowest cost routes in the world. The cost and availability of iron ore and natural gas, government support, and proximity to the growing Southeast Asian market all contribute to the competitive position of the area. Owing to the lead-time required, this is an ideal time to develop a new project to supply semi-finished steel to Asia for rolling to a finished product. A project contracted now will start up in about three years, when the market should have recovered.

The deposit has been exploited for Mn oxide and carbonate since 1916. Known reserves of MnO, however, are almost depleted and the survival of the mine will depend on the exploitation of the carbonate. Kriging, inverse distance weighting (IDW) and cross-sectional methods have been applied to the evaluation of the carbonate resources and reconciliation of the estimates obtained shows that kriging and IDW give almost identical block values. A comparison using conditional probability indicates that there is virtually no difference between the global reserve estimates derived from the cross-sectional and kriging methods. The physical causes of these similarities are highlighted and the problems of dealing with multimodal distributions are discussed together with the difficulties of semi-variogram modelling

THIS tunnel, which is an adit 7000 ft. long, was undertaken by the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company Limited to connect its treatment works with the North Lyell mine at depth, with a view to effecting economies in transport and drainage. The work was carried out at high pressure throughout from both ends, and although the ground in the mine end was intensely hard, good progress was made, and driving was completed in less than fifteen months.The Mount Lyell mining field is situated in the west of Tasmania, about 20 miles inland, the only means of access being the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company's 3 ft. 6 in. gauge railway which connects with the Government railway system of the State at Strahan, on Macquarie Harbour. The region is mountainous, and presents many difficulties to the road and railway engineer. The West Coast range running north and south in a succession of bold prominences, which rise up to 4000 ft. above sea-level, forms the backbone of the district, and on its foothills the Mount Lyell mines are situated. Recently in Japan, unexpected degradation (surface subsidence) at old underground quarry sites, such as 'Ohya-Ishi' (pumice tuff) pit field has often been occurred. At these quarry sites, the excavation was started 20 or 30 years ago with mechanical chain cutter and the Room and Pillar method, and stopped 7 or more years ago. Therefore, a reliable method has been required for an estimation of long term mechanical properties of the rock and for an observation of a stability of rock-pillars or structures. In this study, creep tests under uniaxial compressive load were carried out on the 'Ohya-Ishi', with the aim of estimating the long term stability of the rock. From these results, a creep mechanism of the rock was discussed using the failure mechanism hypothesis proposed by Bieniawski and by others. On this basis, critical time to failure was predicted by the relationship between the logarithm of life time and stress ratio of the sustained axial creep load. Additionally, outline of the monitoring system of AE/MS activity in the field, which have set by the Ohya Aria Consolidate Public Corporation and the others to predict or to prevent the degradation of those residual pillars, is to be reported. The majority of fatalities that occur in road construction work zones in the United States involve a worker being struck by a piece of construction equipment or other vehicle. The Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, in cooperation with the Washington State Department of Transportation, is evaluating methods to decrease these accidents. One such method uses devices that assist equipment operators in monitoring blind areas around the equipment to prevent collisions with workers on foot or other objects. Several cameras and sensor systems are available for this application, and a study was conducted to evaluate these systems on various trucks used in road construction and maintenance. Tests were conducted using sanding trucks during the winter months, which allowed researchers to investigate the effectiveness and limitations of various technologies under the most extreme conditions. Tests were also conducted using dump trucks during the warmer months to study the effectiveness of the systems in highway work zones. Results show that many difficulties arise when using camera and sensor systems in cold, snowy climates. And, while the operation of these systems is more reliable during the warmer months, challenges still exist in using them on equipment in crowded work areas.

Bi was electrorefined from alloys containing 10-90 wt% Pb, together with Cu and Ag as minor impurities, in a basic cell and in a recessed-channel cell with 27.5:72.5 NaCl-PbCl electrolyte at 450-470 degrees C and 10 000-20 000 A/m2. The voltage in the basic cell was as high as 9 V, with some carryover of Bi to the cathode observed, whereas in the recessed-channel cell it was as low as 285-635 mV. Flow patterns observed in a room-temperature model indicated that the recesses provide both static liquid hold-up and good mixing of the alloy, enhancing cell performance in combination with the reduced anode-cathode distance of 0.90 mm. The purity of the resulting anode product is as high as 99.9%

A novel, microaerobic, heterotrophic microbial leaching system for manganese dioxide is described. Mixed natural microflora were enriched by addition of sugars and crude plant nutrItIOnal supplements. Between 84 and 104 mg MnH was solubilized per gram sugar at I per cent (w/v) concentrations for fructose and galactose in the presence of 0.03 per cent w/v dried microalgae (a Chlamydomonas species). Some 42 per cent soluble manganese was dissolved by microbial action on MnO, (3 per cent (w/v) pulp density) using a 10 per cent (w/v) molasses growth substrate.

By implementing a converter downstream of the reduction furnace it is possible to broaden the product range significantly. The converter can also successfully be used to strip furnace slag from chromium oxide. Some process alternatives and their economical, practical and environmental implications are studied using process models developed based on UHT?s long experience in stainless steelmaking, stainless steel process control and charge chrome refining. The Block 37 Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) Tunnel Construction Project was originally designed by STV to connect Blue Line subway in North Dearborn Street and Red Line subway in State Street in the downtown Chicago Area. The project was proposed using tunnel mining techniques combined with steel pipe jacking and fiber glass rebar soil reinforcement. Weidlinger Associates, Inc. (WAI) and Kiewit Construction Company proposed an alternate design using open cut construction technology. WAI designed a complex temporary excavation support system using Soldier Pile Tremie Concrete (SPTC) walls and Soldier Pile Lagging walls supported by cross lot/corner bracing elements. Below the top of the existing tunnel, a top-down construction technique was utilized. A steel temporary traffic decking system at top of the excavation site served as the daily street traffic function as well as the first level of bracing for the support of excavation. The project encountered great challenges of soft clay conditions in downtown Chicago, numerous existing utilities in the excavation site and the requirements of protection for a number of historical buildings nearby as well as the protection of the city streets. The construction was successfully completed at both State Street/Washington Street and Dearborn Street/Randolph Street. The monitoring system showed that ground movement and adjacent building settlement was kept to a minimum during construction.

"Recovery of mineralized coarse particles is notoriously low in conventional concentrators that treat copper porphyry ores. The application of coarse particle flotation techniques has the potential to achieve comparable metallurgical performance at significantly coarser primary grind sizings. ALS Metallurgy has been conducting both internal research and commercial test programs to investigate the potential of Eriez HydroFloatTM technology on copper sulphide ores. Test data indicates that significant improvements in the recovery of copper sulphide bearing particles between 200µm to 850µm can be achieved using Hydrofloat technology compared to conventional flotation techniques. This paper summarizes the results from a selection of test programs that includes recovery by size data from both conventional flotation and HydroFloatTM tests. An explanation of the apparatus and test procedure will be given. Mineralogical analyses of the test products and characteristics that limit metallurgical performance will be discussed.Description of Apparatus and Test ProtocolThe HydroFloatTM laboratory cell is a clear plastic column with an internal diameter of 14 cm. Water and air are introduced to the cell through a circular manifold located in the lower portion of the cell. The cell has a conical bottom which directs slurry to a pinch valve that controls the discharge of tailings. Feed solids are introduced to the upper portion of the cell in slurry form. The cell is operated in a manner such that the manifold water creates a teeter bed zone of suspended solids in the middle portion of the cell. Tailings exit the bottom of the cell at a high pulp density, and most of the introduced water overflows the top of the column and is collected in a launder. Particles with a hydrophobic surface may attach to air bubbles that percolate through the teeter bed, rendering them sufficiently buoyant to be transported to the overflow launder.Three significant features of this arrangement enhance the potential to recover coarse, low grade particles by flotation techniques. Firstly, the hindered settling conditions created by the rising column of water allow coarse particles to become buoyant once attached to a modest sized air bubble. Secondly, the flow conditions within the cell are relatively quiescent compared to a conventional flotation cell that utilizes an agitator. This allows particles that have limited hydrophobic portions of their surface, due to a low content of exposed sulphide mineral, to maintain a somewhat fragile attachment to air bubbles long enough for successful recovery to the overflow. Finally, the absence of a froth phase at the top of the cell allows particles attached to air bubbles to immediately exit the vessel, reducing the potential to drop back into the pulp phase as bubbles burst or coalesce."

Power Plant. The power for the metallurgical operations is supplied by the company's own power plant, which is centrally situated. Power is also supplied to Metal Manufactures Ltd. and Australian Fertilizers Ltd., both being adjacently situated to this company'sworks.The power supplied is direct current, 250 volts, and is obtained from direct-current generators coupled to turbines and to Belliss & Morcom triple expansion engines.The steam supply is obtained from Babcock & Wilcox water tubular boilers, the fuel used being drawn from the South Coast coal mines.Transport. - The works are connected by standard broad gauge railway to both the jetties and the Government railway. Two steam and three electric locomotives are employed in this service.In addition to its own requirements, transport is provided to Metal Manufactures Ltd. and Australian Fertilizers Ltd.The various operating departments are connected by a 2-ft. gauge railway operated by Jeffrey electric locomotives.Ore Storage and Sample Mill - These departments are connected by broad gauge line to the Government railway and jetties. All material which is railed or shipped to the works from the various centres is weighed, sampled and placed in the ore store, or outside gantries, before being treated.Since the whole of the material received is either purchased or treated on a toll charge, great care is necessary in the weighing and sampling of all the receipts.Assay Oflice--The assay office is divided into several laboratories, where analyses of the various purchased materials and works samples are carried out.

Geophysical anomalies result from the passage of hydrothermal fluids through rocks. Interpretation of these anomalies, when integrated with available geological and geochemical data, assists the construction of a conceptual model of the original hydrology of the system. The original extent of a geothermal system is often indicated by the distribution of low resistivity argillic clay alteration. Quartz-adularia vein deposits, silica sinters or stockwork (often mineralised) cause local increases in resistivity. Appropriately chosen electrical techniques can therefore be used to help target such structures. Airborne magnetic surveys have also proven useful in New Zealand epithermal exploration, because hydrothermal fluids destroy magnetite causing extensive demagnetisation anomalies. Ground magnetic surveys can sometimes be useful for geological interpretation on a local scale. Positive gravity anomalies may occur as a result of mineral precipitation (silica or calcite) in high porosity host rocks, while negative gravity anomalies can result from hydrothermal fracturing and leaching of relatively dense host rocks. The relative merits of these geophysical techniques as used in the exploration of epithermal mineral prospects are discussed, with particular reference to the Hauraki Goldfield. The preferred method for defining zones of quartz veining/silicification is vector or tensor gradient resistivity. Exploration strategies and technique refinements are suggested as a means of improving the resolution of potentially mineralised target structures, in a more efficient and cost effective manner.
