Bowen Basin coalmines suffer from hot and humid ambient conditions during the summer period. The ambient conditions combined with high VRTs, increasing depth of working and significant equipment heat loads results in heat issues underground. Coalmines operate under heat stress management plans as required by legislation with associated trigger action response plans (TARPs). Some mines also employ refrigeration as part of their heat management strategy.A recent case study was conducted on a mine producing about 4.5 Mt/a from their longwall and experiences summer surface ambient temperatures of about 23.5ºCwb. The expected virgin rock temperature is 46ºC at 300 m depth. The mine currently introduces a modest amount of surface cooling at the portal using ‘off-the-shelf’ air conditioning units. This system does not effectively manage face temperature primarily due to positional inefficiency.Underground conditions remain hot in summer and work is typically undertaken in accordance with the Heat TARP. This has a direct impact on the productivity of crews, worker comfort and also negatively impacts the workforce morale. The mine commissioned a study to determine a refrigeration strategy aimed at maintaining underground conditions below TARP levels 90 per cent of the time.The ventilation network model was calibrated against actual temperature data to simulate the heat loads including longwall, conveyor system, strata and auxiliary diesel fleet. This model was then used to determine the cooling requirements for bulk surface cooling, bulk underground cooling, surface district cooling and underground district cooling strategies.These estimates were used to undertake a total owning cost trade-off for the different strategies. The study concluded that a chilled air shaft has the lowest technical risk but the highest total owning cost due to shaft development needs. Introducing chilled water to an underground cooler via boreholes offered the lowest total owning cost and was therefore recommended.CITATION:van den Berg, L and Olsen, M, 2017. The application of microwave energy as a substitute for conventional heating has drawn interest from many researchers in extractive metallurgy. Microwaves have a heating effect just as many other forms of radiant energy. Microwaves are able to penetrate the substance at which they are directed and in being absorbed heat the material from the inside. As a result of heat generated in the interior of a particle, microwaves can affect the rupture of a particle (in this case a host ore) and break down the matrix of the particle (host ore) and expose the recoverable mineral to the leaching reagent. Two series of leaching experiments were carried out at temperatures above 90????C using a conventional heater (hot plate) and a modified 850 W, 2.45 Ghz microwave oven. One series of tests was carried out at ambient temperature. A pyritic/arsenopyritic gold concentrate was leached with 3.3 kg/t to 6.8 kg/t NaCN for two hours. The extraction of gold at 6.8 kg/t NaCN was higher in microwave assisted leaching (59 per cent) than the extraction obtained in leaching at conventional heating (39 per cent) and ambient temperature (28 per cent). Extraction of gold was dependent on the size fraction used and was 48 per cent for û75 ¦m, 43 per cent for û90+75 ¦m and 37 per cent for û150 + 90 ¦m size ranges.

Accurate estimation of equipment costs is a key factor in feasibility study and evaluation of design alternatives of mining projects. In this paper, capital and operation costs of backhoe loaders are estimated using multiple linear regression (MLR), based on principle component analysis (PCA). These cost functions are consisted of five independent variables; bucket size, digging depth, dump height, weight and horse power. The MLR is conducted in two steps. At the first correlation between independent variables is omitted using PCA technique. Thereafter, MLR functions are established using selected significant PCs and total cost functions are constituted as functions of initial variables. At the end, accuracy of functions are evaluated using mean absolute error rate method.

For research and test data to serve a useful purpose, it is essential that it be derived from some known standard test procedure that allows for comparative analysis as well as independent replication and verification. Fan performance data provided by manufacturers is not absolute, and is influenced by the geometry of the test installation. For these reasons, fan test standards have been prepared in order to establish a clearly defined test procedure that allows for comparison of different fan designs, and also allows for the independent verification of test data. Internationally recognized Standards such as BS848, ISO5801, and AMCA 210 etc. are highly prescriptive, and precisely specify test duct configurations, measurement procedures, measurement planes and instrumentation to be used. Provided the laboratory tests are conducted strictly in accordance with the relevant Standard, the performance data will accurately reflect fan performance within the appropriate tolerances for efficiency, pressure and flow when tested in the defined configuration. Major differences in performance exist between a fan tested in accordance with a Fan Test Standard, and an identical fan installed in a mine ventilation system. The aerodynamic performance of any fan will be influenced by the quality of the fan manufacture, the flow system within which it is operating, the location of measurement planes, and the system stability. The flow distributions present in a standardized Laboratory test are unlikely to be repeated in mine ventilation systems, and this will also disadvantage fan performance. Unless the fan supplier takes all of these influences into account, there will an inevitable reduction in fan aerodynamic performance, and the end user will experience a shortfall in expected flow through the mine. The effect on fan performance can range from minor inconvenience to catastrophic fan failure resulting in major rectification costs and significant loss of mine production.

Coastal acid sulfate soils (ASS) are wetland soils and unconsolidated sediments that contain iron sulfides which, when exposed to atmospheric oxygen in the presence of water, form sulfuric acid. ASS form in protected low energy environments such as barrier estuaries and coastal lakes and commonly occur in low lying coastal lands as Holocene marine muds and sands. When disturbed, the iron sulfides in these soils can oxidise and produce large volumes of sulfuric acid (essentially similar chemistry to acid rock drainage with mines) resulting in the subsequent release of toxic levels of iron, aluminium, manganese and possibly heavy metals. This results in detrimental effects on aquatic biota, plants, animals and steel/concrete structures and on human health in the surrounding environment. There are an estimated 2.3 million ha of ASS located along 6500 km of the Queensland coastline. In contrast to many mineral sulfides encountered in the mining industry, the pyrite crystals in ASS can be as small as 2 mm and commonly occur as framboids with extremely large surface area per unit mass, substantially increasing their reactivity if exposed to air (oxidation). Highly reactive iron monosulfides can also occur, particularly in drains and shallow lakes. Many coastal areas, where some 80 per cent of the population of Queensland reside, are coming under pressure for agricultural and urban development. Construction of canal estates, marinas, housing/industrial estates, roads, golf courses, aquaculture ponds, sand/gravel extraction and drainage for sugar cane can disturb ASS and release sulfuric acid, which may then drain into adjacent waterways with heavy rain. As development continues to encroach on coastal lowlands, the identification, quantification and management of ASS must be addressed as part of a commitment to the principles of Ecologically Sustainable Development (ESD). ASS can be successfully managed by adopting best practices and following guidelines, but government, community and industry must collaborate to raise awareness, avoid æhot spotsÆ and develop more cost-effective solutions. Scientists led the education and public awareness program showing infrastructure and environmental damages arising from ASS in Queensland. Using results from mapping and research, they convinced policy makers, industry and polititians to accept the need for legislation founded on good science. The resulting æState Planning Policy 2/02: Planning and Managing Development Involving Acid Sulfate SoilsÆ identifies the StateÆs interest in acid sulfate soils. The Queensland Government considers that development involving acid sulfate soils in low-lying coastal areas should be planned and managed to avoid potential adverse effects on the natural and built environment (including infrastructure) and human health. SPP 2/02 states where the policy applies and when a development application will trigger the policy. It can also be used to assist local governments in preparing their planning schemes under the æIntegrated Planning Act 1997Æ. The SPP 2/02 comes with a æState Planning Policy 2/02 GuidelineÆ to provide advice and technical information on interpreting and implementing the SPP 2/02. This guideline has legal status in assisting in the interpretation of SPP 2/02. Those seeking more detailed technical information can now also access the æSoil Management GuidelinesÆ and ASS æSampling GuidelineÆ, available from the Department of Natural Resources and Mines website. Turkish iron and steel sector, the base of which was established in the 1930?s, plays an important role in the industrialization and development of the country?s economy. In Türkiye this sector is the major consumer of ferroalloys. There had been a great improvement in Turkish Iron and Steel industry, especially after the 1980?sand as a result, 20.9 million tons of yearly crude steel production placed Türkiye 11th in the global steel output and 3rd in Europe. 15 % of steel produced in Türkiye is flat products, while the long products make the rest. The product composition and the general characteristics of steel production process led to an increase in ferroalloy consumption. Domestically consumed ferroalloys are especially ferromanganese, silicomanganese, and ferrosilicon. As of today, ferroalloy production capacity of Türkiye is 173,800 tons/year; 161,500 tons of which is ferrochrome with high and low carbon grades, 7,300 tons of ferrosilicochrome and the rest is ferrosilicon (5,000 tons/year). Türkiye is one of leading ferrochrome producers in the world considering the above mentioned production figures. However, this production is mainly exported since Türkiye?s stainless steel production level is modest requiring low amounts of ferrochrome. The products of iron and steel industry in Türkiye require large quantities of other ferroalloys, which make Türkiye a major importer and exporter of ferroalloys. The aim of this work is to present production, consumption, import and export quantities of: ferrochrome, ferromanganese, ferrosilicon, ferromolybdenum, ferrotungsten, ferrotitanium and ferrovanadium of Türkiye, between 1990 and 2006.

Installation of a horizontal air blocking shelf around the inside perimeter of the surface mining drill deck shroud is proposed to improve dust capture. Without the use of this shelf, a strong coanda effect airflow pattern results in dust leakage to the environment, especially at the shroud-to-ground interface. Bailing air exits the drill hole and travels along the drill steel to the underside of the table, where it fans out across the bottom of the drill table and continues down the sides of the shroud. This dust-laden bailing air then strikes the ground and fans out under gaps between the shroud and the ground. The proposed shelf prevents dust-laden air from striking the ground by redirecting it toward the center of the enclosure, where it can be captured. Laboratory tests demonstrated that the shelf reduced dust levels outside of the shroud by 81% under operating conditions consisting of a 1.9:1 collector to bailing airflow ratio, and a 5.1-cm (2-in) gap between the shroud and ground. The shelf was 15.2-cm (6-in) wide and located at a height equal to 2/3 the distance measured from the bottom of the shroud to the bottom of the drill table. The air blocking shelf was also capable of overcoming the adverse impact of vertical leakage along the shroud seams as long as this leakage was confined to an area below the horizontal plane defined by the shelf location.

Over the last decade significant development and use has been made of a simulation model that describes the HCFeMn smelting operations in Assmang Ltd. This spreadsheet based, semi-empirical, predictive model is derived from data from the submerged arc furnaces at Assmang?s Cato Ridge, KwaZulu-Natal smelter site. Departures from the empirical base case mass balance due to changes in the ores, reductant feeds and operating parameters are accounted for by use of fundamental relationships and heuristic type ratios which are applied in an iterative manner in the model. The model performs a sequential set of calculations to iteratively converge on a fully consistent mass and energy balance solution, which predicts Mn alloy and slag output masses and compositions for a given set of feeds. 440 MWh per operating day is used as the basis of energy input. The paper describes the key model components, assumptions made and calculation approach. Added to the mass and energy balance is a cost and revenue balance, which allows prediction of the economic performance for each simulation. Substantial use of the model has been made in simulating the performance of the current Assmang HCFeMn furnaces for both smelter investigations and future production planning. The model has also been a valuable tool in the strategic analysis of the use of future Mn ores and has formed the vital link between mine ore grades (metal and slag elements) and the expected alloy output, grade and profitability. Additionally, the model has been used in benchmarking exercises to predict other Mn smelting operations with remarkable accuracy. The paper highlights some aspects of the approaches taken in using the model to benchmark Assmang?s own furnace performance and cost competitiveness with other producers. For Assmang the development and application of this modelling technology has led to transformation in understanding of the Assmang HCFeMn furnace operations and increased awareness of the potential of its Mn ore bodies.

"INTRODUCTION The Bureau of Mines Synthetic Liquid Fuels Program again forged ahead during 1952, and important technical advances led the way to improved methods of converting coal and oil shale into liquid fuels. Marking the eighth year of activities under this program, the pact 32 months brought a new domestic industry nearer realization.The increasing demand for gasoline and oil and the rising cost of finding new petroleum, coupled with America's growing dependence on imports and the unsettled international situation, have continued to emphasize the importance of the Bureau's Synthetic Liquid Fuels Program. Oil, the indispensable material of wartime, likewise has critical importance in peacetime, touching as it does the life of every individual. Supplementing petroleum with synthetic liquid fuels will not only conserve this Nation's petroleum reserves but also will bring into greater use its tremendous reserves of coal, as well as the vast deposits of oil shale for which no other practical use has yet been found.The Bureau of Mines Synthetic Liquid Fuels Program is one of the most important and far-reaching of the Government's research projects. Through development of commercial synthetic liquid fuels, the United States can obtain oil products from its great inland reserves of coal and oil shale to supplement petroleum in any quantity that may be necessary, consistent with economic and other requirements, such as national defense. The use of raw materials from such deposits would be of highest importance in wartime, when shipping lanes are menaced by the enemy. The Synthetic Liquid Fuels Program of the Bureau of Mines and research efforts of industry have advanced. American technology to the point where it is now possible to begin the design and construction of prototype plants. Certainly, significant improvements will be made as the program continues, but this prospect in no way alters the fact that the start of prototype plants should be encouraged. Microwave energy has been recently used in minerals processing to speed up the leaching process or to improve the liberation of targeted minerals (Al-Harahshed and Kingman, (2003); Bradshaw et al., (2001)). Applied to the roasting of sulphide minerals, microwaves allow the ?tunning? of calcine types and products quality in addition to the energy savings as opposed to the conventional roasting (Mulaba, 2006). As more than 85% of world zinc is produced through the ?roast-leach-electrowin? route, an attempt was made to optimize cost, energy and product quality for metal extraction process route. The use of microwaves was the alternative process route selected for the optimisation. Pyrite concentrate (0.17% Zn, 0.09% Cu, 35.71% Fe, 43.76% S) and sphalerite concentrate containing 43.81% Zn, 0.37% Cu, 3.86% Fe and 44.39% S were microwave roasted in a multimode cavity of 2.45 GHz with varying power levels and for different durations. The produced calcines were characterized using AAS, XRF, XRD and Mossbauer spectroscopy while the determination of residual Sulphur was used as products quality control tool to ascertain the degree of roasting achieved on the feed. The leachability of the produced calcines in HCl, HNO3, H2SO4 and HNO3 + HCl has been studied in terms of the best leaching yield, process kinetics economics and environmental aspect. With 800 W power for 30 minutes, ZnO and Fe2O3 were formed corresponding to a 70% sulfur removed from sphalerite and 80% from pyrite concentrates respectively. While the roasting of the above concentrates appeared to be a first degree processes, it was noticed that the microwave assisted roasting of sphalerite and pyrite concentrates yielded lower sample surface temperature for a shorter time (i.e.less than 30 minutes) microwave exposition. Longer time (more than 30 minutes) microwave exposure showed a linear increase in temperature in function of power level used. While optimum roasting conditions were found at 800W, 30 minutes, a 10% increase of sulfur removal was noticed while pyrite concentrate was microwave roasted. Sulfuric acid was seen to give higher leaching yield than nitric acid. Zinc dissolution was hindered by the presence of franklinite.

This paper by Mr Mclvor is yet another contribution to the eternal controversy surrounding the benefits, or otherwise, of high circulating loads in closed circuit grinding. Throughout the paper it is difficult to establish whether the author is referring to effects relating to the mill, classifier, or to the overall circuit. Table 1 is put forward as indicating the advantage of operating at high circulating loads. From the two (it would be interesting to see more) product sizing points provided in each case, the conclusions to be drawn are that cases one and two have very similar size analyses. The third case, however, indicates a much flatter curve, that is to say, higher fines production and a very wide spread of size ranges. If the objective of this circuit is to provide a closely sized product with minimum overground slimes to the downstream process, then it would appear to be the less "efficient" by far. No data is given for product pulp densities either. The term "efficiency" should never be used without a careful and clear definition. In this case, "efficiency" is used to express an apparent percentage reduction in operating work index (Bond) from the measured "standard" at 250% circulat¬ing load operation. The development of a sampling instrument for the assessment of an underground coal miner’s exposure to airborne respirable coal mine dust on a continuous and real-time basis has been long identified as essential for timely initiation of control actions. A respirable dust dosimeter (RDD) which operates on the principle of increasing pressure across a filter media with increasing dust mass on the filter has been developed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. Comparisons of the performance of the RDD with an U.S. approved gravimetric respirable dust sampler (GRD) have shown that the RDD may meet the requirements for measuring miners’ exposures on a cumulative, near real-time basis such as mid-shift and end of shift exposures. Recently, the performances of the RDD and GRD were compared by conducting side-by-side area sampling experiments in a controlled experimental environment in the laboratory and in underground coal mines under normal operating conditions. In this paper, the results from the in-mine study are presented and discussed. The experimental design for the in-mine study included two mines in different coal seams in different geographic coal regions. To ensure a wide range of concentrations, the experiments were conducted in a continuous miner section in Mine 1, and a longwall face in Mine 2. Airborne dust sampling was conducted for four different shifts at each mine. In each shift, two samples of different exposure durations were collected from two different locations. Each sample consisted of the readings of three dosimeters and the exposed filters from the three paired GRD samplers. As a result, a total of 96 comparative samples were obtained, 48 for each mine. The data were analyzed for the precision of the RDD and GRD measurements and for the relationships between the differential pressure of the RDD and the mass of dust on the paired GRD filter. The analyses indicate that, on the average, the RDD and the GRD track the airborne respirable dust concentrations well, exhibiting both a high correlation between the two measurements and a reliable predictive relationship of one from the other. Details of the experimental design, data analyses procedures, results, conclusions and recommendations of the underground experiments are presented in this paper.

Characterization of feed material with respect to expected concentrate grade and recovery is fundamental to the design of improved separation efficiencies and to achieve sustainable development in the utilization of our mineral resources. An important reference point for this characterization is the liberation-limited grade/recovery curve which represents the perfect separation, the best separation which can be achieved for a given feed material limited only by the extent of liberation. Now, liberation-limited grade/recovery curves can be determined based on 3D mineral liberation analysis of feed material. Thus, actual separation efficiencies can be compared to what might be expected for a perfect separation limited only by the extent of liberation. It is shown that 3D mineral liberation analysis based on X-ray micro CT (XMCT) is preferred to 2D section analysis which overestimates the extent of liberation. By way of example, procedures and experimental results are presented and discussed for feed material in the case of phosphate rock flotation.

Although vegetation can be successfully established on fine taconite tailings, innovative approaches are needed to reclaim the coarse tailings used for dam construction. Through a series of cooperative projects with various government agencies and industries, EVTAC has been able to develop a unique closure plan. This plan will not only meet current reclamation standards, but also provide mitigation for a disturbed wetland and possibly create a tree plantation in the interior of the basin. By using waste products and exchanging materials, reclamation of the entire basin will be accomplised in a cost effective manner.

During the last 25 years, multistage mixer-settlers have been used extensively for liquid ion exchange work. The mixer-settler has the advantage of being a compact device in which a large number of stages can be assembled in a relatively small area. They are particularly advantageous for the separation of rare earths. Most of the adjacent rare earths have separation factors which are near one, which means that a large number of stages are needed to produce a good separation. When two elements (m, n) are extracted simultaneously, the separation factor (ßm, n) is defined as: [ ] where Ym, Yn are the molarities of the respective elements in the organic phase and Xm, Xn, are their molarities in the aqueous phase at equilibrium. The industrial consumption of rare earth oxides rose to over 6800 tons in 1968, an increase of 33% over 1967.1 The increased production and demand for rare earth and lanthanum chlorides for petroleum cracking catalysts was one of the principal factors in this increased consumption of rare earths. In 1968 approximately 59% of the rare earth oxides produced were used for gasoline cracking catalysts in the form of rare earth and lanthanum chlorides. There was also an increase in the sales of lanthanum oxides for use in optical lenses and in fiber optics. The future looks good for the rare earth industry. The rare earths can be expected to be used in many new products which are being developed. Until the late 1950's tributyl phosphate (TBP) was the principal solvent used in rare earth liquid ion exchange. In 1957 Peppard3 reported the use of di (2-ethyl-hexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) as a solvent for separating the rare earths. Microorganisms are directly or indirectly involved in many chemical alterations and in the decomposition of minerals required for their growth. Microbial dissolution of sulfide minerals under acidic conditions can produce over 1,000 times more Acid Rock Drainage (ARD) than chemical action alone. Microbial actions can cause precipitation of minerals, adsorption or release of metals, and formation/destruction of organic-metallic complexes. Soluble minerals can serve as oxidizing substrates, electron donors/acceptors in redox reactions, and can be directly involved in cell metabolism. Microorganisms and microbial oxidation-reduction reactions and their contribution to mineral mobilization and stabilization will be discussed.

Underground mining method selection (UMMS) is one of the most important issues in mining engineering. Underground mining method should be primarily selected to make use of underground resources optimally. It is nearly impossible to change the mining method once selected by the reasons of rising costs and mining losses. Because of these reasons, UMMS process is extremely important in mine designs and economics. The strategy of underground mining method selection has been studied by different researchers in the literature. Boshkov and Wright (1973) proposed a classification system; Morrison (1976) suggested a selection chart; Laubscher (1981) proposed a selection methodology; Nicholas (1981) presented a classification system; Hartman (1987) developed a selection chart and Miller-Tait et al. (1995) modified the Nicholas? system and developed the UBC mining method selection process. In reality, UMMS is one of the important Multiple Attribute Decision Making (MADM) problems and mining engineers have always some difficulties in making the right decision in the multiple criteria environment. To make a right decision on UMMS, all known criteria related to the mining method selection should be analyzed and the problem solved according to suitable decision making techniques. A review of the literature reveals that decision making techniques have been used for UMMS applications. Kesimal and Bascetin (2002), Bitarafan and Ataei (2004), Bascetin et al. (2006), Alpay and Yavuz (2007), Karadogan et al. (2008) and Samimi Namin et al. (2008) used decision making techniques in UMMS applications. In this paper, two different MADM methods: Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Fuzzy Multiple Attribute Decision Making (FMADM) are applied to select the optimal underground mining method for a chromite mine and final solutions are then compared. THE AHP METHODOLOGY The AHP method developed by Saaty gives an opportunity to represent the interaction of multiple factors in complex unstructured situations (Triantaphyllou, 2000). The method is based on the pair-wise comparison of components with respect to attributes and alternatives. A pair-wise comparison matrix n×n is constructed, where n is the number of elements to be compared. The method is applied for the hierarchy problem structuring. The problem is divided in to three levels: problem statement, object identification to solve the problem and selection of evaluation criteria for each object. After the hierarchy structuring, the pair-wise comparison matrix is constructed for each level where a nominal discrete scale from 1 to 9 is used for the evaluation as shown in Table 1 (Saaty, 1980; Saaty, 2000). The next step is to find the relative priorities of criteria or alternatives implied by this comparison. The relative priorities are worked out using the theory of eigenvector. For example, if the pair comparison matrix is A, then, [Amax=××- [1] ] To calculate the eigenvalue ??max? and eigenvector w=(w1, w2,..., wn), weights can be estimated as relative priorities of criteria or alternatives. [ ] Since the comparison is based on the subjective evaluation, a consistency ratio is required to ensure the selection accuracy. Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, furnace, sulphur, SO2, off-gas, Zimplats Zimplats embarked on an off-gas sampling campaign in December 2009 to characterise the concentration of SO2 in the off-gas from their 13 MW furnace. In excess of forty isokinetic samples (US EPA Method 8) were taken over seven days. The aim of the sampling campaign was to increase the understanding of factors that influence sulphur release from sulphide concentrates in an electric furnace. Specifically, detailed monitoring was conducted over various operating conditions to evaluate: ? The relationship between SO2 and feed rate (i.e. furnace power) ? The relationship between SO2 and ingress (i.e. furnace freeboard pressure) ? The impact of concentrate bed thickness on SO2 (i.e. blacktop) ? The effect of events such as tapping and converter slag return on SO2 ? The desulphurization reactions that take place in the blacktop A model was developed to predict the SO2 content in furnace off-gas for a particular set of operating conditions. In order to evaluate the impact of random, uncorrelated changes in concentrate composition, ingress and power (feed rate) on the SO2 content of the off-gas, a Monte Carlo approach was adopted whereby concentrate composition, power, and ingress were allowed to vary randomly around selected set-points. The model is primarily based on the release of ?labile? sulphur from the partial thermal dissociation of sulphide minerals with an over-stoichiometric sulphur content (e.g., Fe7S8 decomposition to FeS and S). The main findings of this work suggest that labile sulphur does not fully account for the measured SO2 content of the off-gas, and that limited oxidation of sulphides during melting also contributes to the SO2 content. Details of sulphide oxidation reactions in the furnace remain unclear, and it is currently not possible to provide a theoretical framework for the relationship between the extent of oxidation and variables such as temperature, gas composition, particle size, and residence time in the furnace black top. Through the use of the Monte Carlo model it was, however, possible to constrain the extent of sulphide oxidation to about 1%. This work has shown in practice what was expected in concept, that SO2 in off-gas is proportional to furnace power and ingress rate. The model that was developed consistently slightly under-predicts the quantity of SO2 generated. It also highlights that more work is required to better understand the analytical methods used to analyse for SO2 in off-gas.
