"INTRODUCTION The Bankhead mine of the Cane Creek Coal Mining Co. is in the central part of Walker County, Ala., 4 miles south of Jasper. The Mary Lee bed in this part of the State yields a practically free-burning coal which is marketed as a. steam-raising and domestic fuel. As mined, the coal ordinarily contains ash-forming impurities to an extent that makes it necessary to treat the coal by some washing process before it is marketed. At present the Bank-head coal coarser than 3-1/2 inch is hand-picked and the coal finer than 3-1/2 inch is washed in two single-compartment jigsThis paper contains the result of screen-sizing and float-and-sink tests on a representative sample of the run-of-mine coal and the results of tests made to show the amount of coal liberated from impurities by crushing the coarser sizes. .This report is one of a series on the washability of Alabama coals which is being prepared by the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the University of Alabama, with the cooperation of the coal producers of Alabama.SAMPLING AT THE MINE'The Mary Lee bed at Bankhead consists of two benches separated by a rock parting which varies in thickness from place to place in the mine. The top bench has a very uniform thick-nest; throughout the workings and yields about 65.0 per cent of the output. The bottom bench varies greatly in thickness and in nary places becomes too thin to work at a. profit. The sample for the washability study was taken underground at a place which was typical of the mine as a whole. In taking the sample the working face was squared up and a representative section out from each bench. Care was taken to secure a, quantity of coal from each bench proportional to the quantity contributed to the mine output. The rock parting as gobbed in accordance with the usual mining practice. The total sample taken weighed 3 tons."

Since the 1960’s toroidal conductivity has been used to determine the Alumina to Caustic ratio of the digester discharge liquor stream. In recent years the application of ceramic materials have allowed the sensors to moved upstream to provide tighter control of the process. In the Bayer process, dissolving the aluminum contained in bauxite ore in caustic soda and converting it to aluminum oxide produces alumina. An important parameter of the process is measuring the alumina to caustic ratio in the digester discharge stream. The A/C ratio at a given caustic concentration is a measure of the degree of saturation of the alumina in the plant liquor. The aim in the process is to achieve a high A/C ratio. There is however a limit where precipitation will occur if the A/C ratio is too high. For many years conductivity has been used to determine the A/C ratio. Conductivity of discharge liquor is related to the caustic concentration. The change in the caustic concentration is in the same direction of the change of solubility of the alumina. Controlling the conductivity through adding additional bauxite ore and varying the dilution flow can increase plant yield.

"Interest in the nitrogen content of steel has increased sharply in the last few years. Investigations have indicated that its presence in steel has an important bearing on high temperature brittleness3, magnetic properties4, room temperature hardening5, and shock resistance. The steel producer may therefore look forward with certaintly to the necessity of controlling this element in a considerable proportion of his product. The literature, however, reveals a great many contradictory statements concerning the percentage of nitrogen which must be present to produce given effects on the properties of iron and steel. Most of these arise from a misunderstanding of the nature of the iron-nitrogen diagram near the iron end and a lack of recognition of the effect of state of aggregation on physical properties although both have been fairly well worked out.My thanks are due to Mr. J. L. Gregg, Prof. R. H. Dowdell, Mr, R. F. Mehl and Mr. H. C. Vacher for suggestions in connection with the preparation of this paper, and to Mr. C. H. Hefty and Mr. G. T. Motok for furnishing a valuable bibliography and translations of articles by Must and Duhr.The iron-nitrogen diagram in the solid state, so far as it concerns the nitrogen content of commercial iron and steel, consists simply in a solubility curve increasing with temperature. The important thing about this solubility curve is that without cold wore the iron nitride when precipitated does not go into solution on heating for long periods below 300°C. This slowness of solution is probably due to the fact that iron nitride when present as a separate phase has at these temperatures an equilibrium pressure of several thousand atmospheres7 and that therefore each particle of iron nitride surrounds itself with a layer of nitrogen. The precipitation of such an unstable crystal presents points of interest thermodynamically but we can not go into these here. It is quite well established that it precipitate. It can not diffuse then unless this layer is broken through or the temperature and pressure are increased to a point where the nitrogen is absorbed at an appreciable rate in the surrounding iron. This rate will depend on the degree of unsaturation of the iron and the excess pressure of the nitrogen above equilibrium pressure. The degree of unsaturation is determined by the temperature alone so that the temperature at which the rate of solution of the nitride becomes appreciable will depend on the pressure of nitrogen developed. This, in turn, will depend on the balance between rate of decomposition of the nitride and the rate o: flow of the iron. In annealed iron, this temperature of appreciable solution rate is between 300 and 350°C.8 By cold work, however, the elastic limit of the iron is increased, and conditions for the nitride to go into solution are reached at a much lower temperature, giving rise to the so-called blue brittleness. This brittleness and hardening is due to iron nitride going into solid solution and is not precipitation hardening."

Paper presented at Mineralisation in the Caledonides, the Mike Gallagher memorial meeting held in Edinburgh, 27-28 June 1996. The sediment geochemistry of streams draining Southern Uplands and Lake District turbidites was compared with lithogeochemical data for the source greywackes, using stratigraphically defined catchments. Several systematic trends in element abundance variation between source and stream sediment can probably be applied more widely to interpretation of drainage geochemistry. Pb and Zr increase markedly from source rock to sediment, by adsorption on clay and zircon grain concentration. Variation of feldspar-related elements Rb, Sr, K and Ba appears to be controlled by source grain size and compositional maturity. Ni shows surprisingly little change and Fe and Co are only slightly raised. Cr is particularly useful, with variations superimposed in anomalously high regional levels. Abrupt changes in Cr distribution in stream sediment coincide with stratigraphical boundaries, allowing drainage data to be used as a surrogate for whole-rock values

This paper discusses the geotechnical condition of bedding shears and small- and large-scale faults and shears in Archean banded iron formation (BIF) bedrock, based on observations of core and televiewer images. Information that can be collected includes the orientation of defects, infill thickness, strength and material type, defect shape and surface roughness.The spacing and continuity of bedding shears may be critical to slope design where performance is structurally controlled with bedding dipping out of a wall. The intensity of development of the bedding shear is a useful indicator of the amount of shearing a bedding surface has been subjected to. This can allow for engineering judgement to be used in adopting peak or residual shear strengths along defect surfaces when developing the design.The spacing and continuity of bedding shears may also contribute to the blockiness and degradation of a rock mass where the structural orientation is otherwise favourable. Additionally the condition, thickness and strength of infill of major fault structures can affect slope design and performance, depending on orientation.Comparison of the condition of structures observed in core with the corresponding in situ televiewer image has been made to assess what characteristics are most accurately captured by each technique and whether the additional information gathered from using the televiewer technique is justified by the cost. The question of whether the data collected by a televiewer is sufficient to ultimately replace the need for core is considered.CITATION:Baxter, H and Eggers, M, 2013. The McDonald gold project and two satellite gold deposits near Lincoln, MT were discovered in the early 1990s. They contain at least 307.9 t (9.9 million oz) of gold and 933 t (30 million oz)of silver. The McDonald gold deposit alone contains 223.9 t (7.2 million oz) of gold reserves that can be open-pit mined and processed by cyanide heap leaching at a projected cash operating cost of $6.10/g ($190/oz). The deposit is predominantly oxidized with no chance of acid production. It can be mined, operated and reclaimed with minimal permanent environmental disturbance other than the creation of an open-pit filled with a fresh-water lake that would support trout.

Biomineralization of manganese on titanium condenser material exposed to seawater has been illustrated. Biom-ineralization occurs when the fouling components, namely, the microbes, are able to oxidize minerals present in water and deposit them as insoluble oxides on biofilm surfaces. Extensive biofilm characterization studies showed that an alarmingly large number of bacteria in these biofilms are capable of oxidizing manganese and are, thereby, capable of causing biomineralization on the condenser material exposed to seawater. This paper addresses studies on understanding the exact role of the microbes in bringing about oxidation of manganese. The kinetics of manganese oxidation by marine Gram-positive manganese oxidizing bacterium Bacillus spp. that was isolated from the titanium surface was studied in detail. Manganese oxidation in the presence of Bacil-lus cells, by cell free extract (CFE) and heat-treated cell free extract was also studied. The study confirmed that bacteria mediate manganese oxidation and lead to the formation of biogenic oxides of MnO2, eventually leading to biomineralization on titanium surface exposed to seawater.

The increasing pace of modern mining makes constantly greater demands upon the several contributing departments of rock breaking and transport, and rock-drilling, as the spearhead of attack, has received a great deal of attention with respect to both machines and steels. By a series of mechanical improvements, combined with the application of selected heat-treated alloy steels, the rock-drill has now been developed into a machine capable of rapid drilling and long service under severe working conditions. As a factoryproduct made under strict metallurgical control it is as foolproof as, say, the modern automobile, and, like its prototype, it can be kept in efficient operation by a minor amount of attention during use and by periodical adjustments and replacements.The same cannot be said, unfortunately, of the drills with which the machine is supplied; in conventional mine-shop practice these are made of the best tool steel shaped and heat-treated under the poorest of metallurgical conditions.The crudities of steel-shop practice have, in fact, always prevented the full exploitation of the steels available at any time, and even at the present day the general standard of treatment offers a contrast with the quality of the steels which moves the metallurgist to amusement, despondency or outrage, according to his temperament. Nevertheless, the tendency persists to meet the increasing demands of the rock-drill primarily by the use of still better steels, and secondarily by improvement, of the steel-shop practice. Athird type of development is the introduction of factorymade tools in the form of detachable bits and rods. "Exploitation of an ore deposit can be optimized by adapting the beneficiation processes to the properties of individual ore blocks. This can involve switching in and out certain treatment steps, or setting their controlling parameters. Optimizing this set of decisions requires the full conditional distribution of all relevant physical parameters and chemical attributes of the feed, including concentration of value elements and abundance of penalty elements. As a first step towards adaptive processing, the mapping of adaptive decisions is explored based on the composition, in value and penalty elements, of the selective mining units.Conditional distributions at block support are derived from cokriging and geostatistical simulation of log-ratios. A one-to-one log-ratio transformation is applied to the data, followed by modelling via classical multivariate geostatistical tools, and subsequent back-transforming of predictions and simulations. Back-transformed point-support simulations can then be averaged to obtain block averages that are fed into the process chain model.The approach is illustrated with a ‘toy’ example where a fourcomponent system (a value element, two penalty elements, and some liberable material) is beneficiated through a chain of technical processes. The results show that a gain function based on full distributions outperforms the more traditional approach of using unbiased estimates."

In order to reach a large, untapped reserve of high-quality coal, D8 Cloverlick mine proposed to mine a corridor nearly 2,000 ft deep beneath the Benham Spur of Black Mountain, Kentucky’s highest peak. D8 Cloverlick mine was extracting the Owl seam, but the corridor’s route lay approximately 70 ft above century-old mine workings in the C–(Darby) seam. Adding to the concern, three serious coal bursts had recently occurred in nearby Owl seam workings.

Since the promulgation of the first Federal Asbestos Standard by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration in 1972, other federal agencies have modified the standard to better carry on their own unique missions. The instruments used to identify and measure asbestos, the sampling protocol, and the criteria used to define asbestos, have been modified to some degree. The Mine Safety and Health Administration regulates and controls asbestos dust in the mining and mineral commodity industries. However, crushed stone and processed ores contain mineral fragments that are frequently difficult to distinguish from asbestos. Mineral nomenclature, instruments for particle analysis, and sampling strategy must be accommodated to some degree to make asbestos control workable and meaningful. Precedent in other agencies has made consideration of these changes possible. Newly identified amphibole asbestos minerals have further complicated the agency?s regulatory charge. Changes in its Asbestos Standard are now being considered. Crushed taconite ore in the Eastern Mesabi highlights many of these issues. ©2008 Published by Elsevier Inc. The compilation of the sampling nomogram is an essential tool in the optimization of a sampling protocol and allows the operator to track the change in relative variance of the sampling error (the Fundamental sampling error) during steps of comminution and mass reduction in the process of recovery of the aliquot for analysis. The data required for the compilation of the nomogram are centred on the sampling constant K and the exponent, alpha (a) of the nominal fragment size. Five methods for establishing K have been identified, but two of them, the duplicate sampling analysis method and the heterogeneity test method purport to provide such constant. The step by step procedure for each of these two methods was examined using broken ores from three mines, Mponeng mine, Kloof mine, and Lily mine. Two of these mines (Mponeng and Kloof) are typical Witwatersrand-type gold mines, and the third is an Archaean-type shear related gold deposit situated in the Barberton Greenstone belt. The results suggest that the factor K derived using the heterogeneity test is very accurate, but applies only to a single size fraction in the spectrum of comminuted materials. The calculation of gold grain sizes using this method appear to be too small and do not conform with the results from detailed mineralogical studies. The factors K and alpha derived using the duplicate series analysis are appropriate for use across a wide spectrum of comminution sizes and also provide realistic gold grain sizes, comparable with the equivalent circular diameter of gold grains identified in mineralogical studies of the ores.

In October 1999, Liebherr-America, Liebherr Construction and Liebherr Mining Equipment held anopen house at its Newport News, VA, plant. The open house was held to celebrate the company’s50th anniversary and to demonstrate the new TI 272mining truck. Attending the open house members of the media, vendors and company representatives from all over the world. In his introductory comments, company president Peter Eller announced Liebherr’s dedication to expanding its presence in North America. Liebherr now has 30 dealers across the United States. As part of the open house, a brief history of Liebherr was presented, beginning with its creation in1949. Liebherr engineering and sales representatives were available to answer questions.

The ability of companies and countries to mine copper and other mineral commodities competitively and in the process to generate new wealth depends on their mineral endowment. Chile, for example, produces and exports copper because it is well endowed with high-quality, low-cost deposits. This production creates wealth that benefits mining companies and their stockholders, the government, local communities, as well as copper consumers around the world. The widespread perception that mineral endowment must largely determine competitiveness, or what economists call comparative advantage, must be true at any particularly moment. Countries with abundant reserves must be competitive. This follows from the definition of reserves — the quantity of a mineral commodity found in discovered deposits that are profitable to exploit under current conditions. As a result, it is a tautology and not particularly interesting. The important question is what causes reserves to change over time, producing in the process new wealth and shifts in competitiveness?

Newmont Mining has a large, integrated gold-mining operation in northern Nevada with several mines, stockpiles and processing facilities. There are more than 90 defined metallurgical ore types and more than 60 defined gold-recovery process options. Newmont developed a mine plan and process model to take better advantage of the available synergies at its Nevada mines. This plan includes a mixed integer and linear programming optimization tool. This system is maintained and operated by a Nevada planning group. Standard in-house planning software tools and methods have been implemented at all mine sites. These changes have allowed a reduction in mine engineering staff and have increased the effectiveness of mine planning.

Production, on the basis of preliminary data, was 964 kt (1.1 millon st) with an estimated value of $45.3 million. Tennessee was the leading producer state with 63 percent of domestic production, followed by Texas, Mississippi and Kentucky. About 73 percent of production was airfloat, 16 percent was crude and 11 percent was water-slurried.

Start Date: April 4, 1988 Completion Date: Dec. 29, 1989 Contractor: SCI Contractors Past and present transportation centers will come together at International District Station, located at the south entrance to the tunnel next to the turn-of-the-century Union Station train depot. The area will bustle once again with activity as commuters and visitors converge on the modern transit station at the edge of Seattle's International District. Buses coming from south Interstate 5 and Interstate 90 will enter the tunnel through this station. [ ] International District Station is an open-air station, 1,060 feet long and 82 feet wide (about 15,400 cubic yards of concrete were used to build the station). A concrete lid over the southern portion of the station staging area is held in place by 131 support piles. The station will include entrances on Jackson Street and King Street. Union Pacific Realty is planning to build an office and retail complex upon the lid. The station also has an international flair. Symbols of the Chinese zodiac will be etched into the station plaza floor. The station platform walls will be lined with large steel panels embellished with designs in origami?a Japanese folded paper art form. [ ]

With the success of their existing casino operation on the Ohio River in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, the Indiana Gaming Co., LP planned a major expansion of the current facilities. This expansion includes a second 1400+/- car parking garage, a new surface parking lot, elevated walkways, and a new floating casino that will double their present square footage and consolidate all of the gaming activity to one floor. In March of 2006 Richard Goettle, Inc. was awarded the general contract to construct a 260? x 520? boat slip for the new Argosy VII floating casino. An Open Cell® bulkhead system was specified as the means for constructing the new slip. Our contract included the purchase and installation of 300,000 square feet of PS27.5 sheet pile, excavation of 230,000 cubic yards of soil, and a 3300 square foot Mechanically Stabilized Earth wall.

Adequate load transfer is considered essential for optimum ground support and is increasingly important in weak roof and/or high stress environments. If adequate load transfer is achieved not only can this have a positive impact on the resulting roof behavior, but it may also allow the use of lower and hence more economic densities of roof support. A wide variety of post-groutable cable bolts are currently in use in the Australian coal mining industry, each of varying capacity, design, and grouting methodology. Though all of the cables are supplied with the appropriate steel specification, strength, and modulus data, the Australian coal mining industry does not have access to a comprehensive and comparative database on the corresponding load transfer performance, which is a critical problem. On the basis of the above, this paper describes the methodology and results of a laboratory pull testing program that aims to assess the impact of cable bolt design on load transfer, and specifically, the impact on the capacity and stiffness of the anchorage. As part of the testing program, 19 cables were tested including (1) plain-strand cables installed in holes drilled with 28 to 55 mm diameter drill bits and (2) bulbed and nutcaged cables installed in holes drilled with 42 to 64 mm diameter drill bits. Other parameters assessed included the significance of smooth and profiled wire, wire packing, and expanded geometry bulbs. The main results of the testing indicate that in comparison to plain-strand cables, if the cable is bulbed or nutcaged, the capacity of the anchor can increase by up to 400%, and the peak stiffness by between one and two orders of magnitude. The results also indicate that increasing hole diameter may have a positive impact on load transfer in the case of bulbed or nutcaged cables and a negative impact on plain-strand cables. No conclusive results were obtained with regard to the impact of grout strength on load transfer.

Mineralisation was identified at Gladstone Hill as far back as the late 1870s-early 1880s, shortly after the initial discovery of mineralisation at what is now the Martha Mine. Indeed, early recovery problems associated with the Martha mineralisation led to the preferred development of ore bodies within what is now the Union Hill Joint Venture tenement; ore bodies such as Silverton, Amaranth, and Union to name a few. Gladstone Hill forms the basis of the Union Hill Joint Venture, a 50:50 joint venture managed by Au-Ag Resources Ltd (a fully owned subsidiary of Otter Gold Mines Ltd), and Welcome Gold Mines Ltd (a fully owned subsidiary of the Normandy Group). The joint venture participants also operate the adjacent Martha Mine. Mineralisation of Gladstone Hill, as with mineralisation at the adjacent Martha Mine, has been interpreted as a low sulphidation epithermal Ag-Au system hosted within hydrothermally altered andesites of the lower Coromandel Group. Drilling in recent years has successfully identified extensive mineralisation associated with a number of vein sets throughout the tenement including the Gladstone Vein set, the Moonlight Lode and more recently along a north-easterly trend towards the historic Favona workings. A wide range of vein styles is apparent, ranging in character from thin stock works to broader lode-style banded chalcedonic to cherty quartz and have been interpreted as representing multiple phases of emplacement. At shallower levels mineralisation is often hosted by vein clasts within vent breccias. Visible gold is rare, with mineralisation generally associated with very fine-grained pyrite, arsenopyrite and minor electrum. Percentage levels of combined sphalerite-galena-(+/- chalcopyrite) have been intersected at depth however these have been gold poor to date. The potential for the Gladstone Hill area remains to be clearly defined as drilling to date has yet to close off mineralisation both along strike and down dip. If further drilling is successful, the joint venture partners believe Gladstone Hill could contribute significantly to the economic future of current operations.
