Calibration of LaModel for deep coal mines begins with adjustment of overburden stiffness for load transfer distance. This calibration determines whether mining induced stresses are concentrated in the immediate abutment of the gob, or spread over a wider area. In the absence of site information, an empirically-based estimate is often used. Where data is available, a recommended calibration procedure can be followed, as is done in this case study at a deep western longwall mine, with minor modifications and extensions. In this case, data sources included borehole pressure cells, flatjacks installed in series with support Cans, and observed changes in ground conditions. Calibration was based on the first detection of mining-induced stress from the advancing longwall. Detection was found to depend on the type and sensitivity of measurement. Borehole pressure cell data with a 20-psi-increase detection threshold were chosen as the standard, in accord with data used in deriving empirical relationships. Application of this standard produced a load transfer distance estimate roughly four times the empirical relationship developed by Peng and Chiang (1984). This is a significant deviation with important implications for panel design at this site. Data from flatjacks, ground condition observations, and borehole pressure cells with higher threshold values, were tightly clustered and show load transfer distances from two to four times empirical guidance. Ratios between various measurements can be used to adjust measurements to the standard (although they may depend on mine geology). Once established, ratios can be used to adjust estimates, say from support flatjacks or ground observations, to the standard, where borehole pressure cell data is not available.`

The United States admits equality by her declaration that Chinese are eligible for American citizenship, and the reaction to this will be swift enmity to such peoples as may impose humiliating restrictions upon Chinese citizens.Finally, the decisions of the Moscow Conference and the recent meeting of National leaders in Cairo give partnership rights to this new State in post-war reconstruction, and open the way for a rapid realization of her destiny.It seems certain that China, if so she wills, can become, within a generation or so, one of the considerable forces of the world. The toad she wiII follow will be lighted by her own inherent and intrinsic genius. Her speed of progress can no longer be forcibly influenced by other nations and the attitude towards her of somewhat contemptuous patronage hitherto adopted by the European communities bordering the Pacific Ocean must be radically modified.It is doubtful whether the European will ever reach full understanding of Chinese mentality. The Chinese "way of life" since the dawn of her civilization has been totally divergent from that of the European, but the enormous potential strength, due to the simplicity of their requirements and their steadfast industry, is a function of that "way of life." On the other hand the trend of reorganization must obviously be towards Western standards; and a wide knowledge of the potential strength of the Chinese is possible and will be essential in our post-war world. The following, necessarily inadequate, notes are therefore offered, as an indication of the obstacles to be overcome and the capacity of the Chinese executives and operatives to overcome them.For 'thirteen centuries the political and social structure of China proper (ie, excluding Mongolia, Manchuria and Tibet) has been rigidly shaped by the philosophy of Lao Tze and the ethics' of Confucius. Backfilling increases the stability of underground stopes and may help reduce the environmental footprint from the mining operation. The barricades holding the backfill in place must be designed to prevent failure based on the total and effective stress states, which depend on fill properties, stope geometry, and filling rate. This paper presents results from a numerical study aimed at analyzing the stress states associated with the response of paste backfill following stope filling, with an emphasis on the short term behavior. The simulations illustrate how stresses evolve with backfill drainage and filling rate in a vertical stope.

The standard tool for addressing this question is to use discounted cash flow analysis, or net asset value(NAV), which is discounted cash flow net of liabilities. Cash flow-based analysis is invaluable for assessing project costs and other impacts on debt service capacity and internal rates of return. Precipitation of tin from Pb-Sn alloys (lead-rich) occurs by the nucleation and growth of hemispherical cells which consist of tin lomelloe interspersed in the depleted solid solution. Nucleation and growth of these cells and the tin interlamellar spacing at various compositions and temperatures have been investigated. The interlamellar spacing increases approximately as the reciprocal of the logarithm of the supersaturation ratio. For constant initial tin concentration the concentration of cell nuclei increases with decreasing temperature to a limiting temperature-independent value. The kinetic results support the view that the cell growth rote is governed by the diffusion of tin along the cell boundary. In the main, the results confirm the authors' earlier deductions, drawn from resistometric and calorimetric data, about the precipitation mechonism. IT has been shown1, 2 that tin (ß) precipitates from lead-rich (a) PbSn solutions by the nucleation and growth of cells (cellular or discontinuous precipitation). These cells consist of tin lamellae, with a spacing 1, interspersed in a depleted a solution. Reorientation of a also accompanies cell growth. The kinetics of cellular precipitation of tin from lead have been measured by resistometric2, 3 and ca1orimetric1, 3 techniques. The time-transformation isotherms (t equals time; x, volume fraction of specimen transformed) of the initial rapid precipitation, which drains about 60 pet of the tin from solution, have been described by a kinetic law having the form x = 1 —exp (—bt n) [I] where n usually has the value 3.0. It was shown" that this law and the other kinetic facts can be explained satisfactorily if it is assumed that the cells grow at a constant rate and that all the cells nucleate in a time negligible in comparison with the period of cell growth before impingement. Thus, for hemispherical cells b = (2/3)pNG3 [21 where G is the rate of cell growth in cm per sec, and N is the number of cell nuclei per unit volume. The rapid rate of cell growth at low temperatures can be accounted for"' if it is assumed that the dissolved tin drains to the lamellae edges by diffusion along the sweeping cell boundary rather than by diffusion through the a crystal (volume diffusion). For cell growth governed by cell boundary diffusion it was shown, approximately G=2(X° - X° / X° ) DBA / l2 where A equals the thickness of the cell boundary; D R, the coefficient of diffusion of tin atoms within the boundary; and X° and X, are the atom fractions of tin in the supersaturated and saturated solutions, respectively. Wind erosion can be a major cause of the loss and dispersion of tailings material from a tailings dam into its surrounding environment. Such dust dispersion can be a serious nuisance, as well as a health hazard to inhabitants in nearby settlements, and can also damage the health of animals, degrade crops, making them less marketable, and cause soil and water pollution. The problem of wind erosion can affect tailings dams in all types of climate, but becomes worse as climatic aridity increases. Because clouds of dust are often observed billowing across the top surfaces of tailings dams in dry windy weather, there is a common misconception that the dust arises from wind erosion of the top surface. As a result, much effort and money is vainly spent on treating the tops of tailings dams to prevent dust generation, whereas the slopes of the dams are the true major dust source. This paper briefly reviews what is known of erosion of tailings dams and then proceeds to describe the mechanics of wind erosion in general, and how it affects tailings dams in particular. Finally, recommendations are made for mitigating wind erosion of tailings dams and the resulting blowing dust.

This paper presents an overview of work carried out by the CSIR Division of Mining Technology and formerly by the Chamber of Mines Research Organization (COMRO) to quantify the behaviour of the stope fracture zone near deep level goldmine stopes. The motivation for this work is first reviewed in the context of the unsatisfactory status of current mine layout design criteria. Numerical methods to represent failure processes are reviewed briefly. Specific studies of microfracture processes are described as well as physical modelling experiments that can yield insights into deformation mechanisms. Modelling of stope scale deformation mechanisms are presented and considerations relating to elastodynamic modelling of the rock mass are described. The implications of this understanding in relation to prospects for active fracture zone ?engineering? are outlined and finally, the directions of future research work are proposed.

The current state of knowledge concerning mesothelioma risk estimates is reviewed. Estimates of the risk of mesothelioma exist for the commercial asbestos fiber types chrysotile, amosite and crocidolite. Data also exist on which to assess risks for winchite (sodic tremolite) and anthophyllite asbestos. Uncertainty in estimates is primarily related to limitations in measurements of exposure. Differences in the dimensions of the various fiber types and of the same fiber types at different stages of processing add a further complication. Nevertheless, in practical terms, crocidolite presents the highest asbestos related mesothelioma risk. The risk associated with sodic tremolite (winchite) appears to be similar. In chrysotile miners and millers, the mesothelioma risk has been linked with exposure to asbestiform tremolite. Exposure to chrysotile in a pure form seems likely to present a very low if any risk of mesothelioma. While the majority of mesothelial tumors result from exposure to the asbestos minerals, there are other well established and suspected etiological agents. While a practical threshold seems to exist for exposure to chrysotile, it is unlikely to exist for the amphibole asbestos minerals, especially for crocidolite. To date there is no indication of an increased risk of mesothelioma resulting from non-commercial fiber exposure in the taconite industry. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. Environmental impacts from acidic mine drainage are growing national concerns that are particularly acute in the headwaters of the Rocky Mountain region. In the Black Hills of South Dakota, approximately one thousand mines are inactive or abandoned, most of them in the headwaters of major drainages. This paper examines the Bear Butte Creek basin, a heavily mineralized watershed with significant historical mining impacts and a surface gold mine permitted in 1997. The watershed loses its surface discharge to swallow holes in the karstic Madison Limestone. The integrity of the aquatic ecosystem was monitored with a suite of sitespecific bio-indicators. Stream surveys covered the entire reach of Bear Butte Creek from near its headwaters to the swallow holes in the Madison aquifer. Data from the stream surveys, water-quality sampling, and bio-indicator surveys clearly showed that water-quality impacts are limited mainly to Strawberry Creek and to the area of Bear Butte Creek near and downstream of the town of Galena.

As mining continues toward deeper reserves in thick western US coal fields, the control of mining induced-seismicity has become a priority in many operations in Utah, Colorado, and Wyoming. Gradual floor heave, common in many coal mines, has historically not been a safety issue. However recent occurrences of sudden floor heave accompanied with seismicity in a few deep mines have fueled this investigation. The focus is to identify and study the mechanisms resulting in sudden heaving of the mine floor in western U.S. deep coal mines through analytical calculations and back analyses of an actual event in a cooperative mine. Based on review of available data in three mines, underground observations and back analyses of an actual event, the authors have identified the following contributing factors (1) presence of stiff stratigraphic units and thick seams mined at depths exceeding 1000-ft (2) presence of geological discontinuities reducing the in-situ strength of the coal with calculated factor of safety near 1 for the mine floor (3) mining approaching areas of higher than normal stress gradient associated with previous mining or structural anomalies or surface topographic highs and (4) an additional source of energy triggering sudden failure such as periodic caving or slip along geological discontinuities. Preliminary examination of seismic data for the actual event in the cooperative mine and underground observations excluded fault slip at the mining horizon as the triggering mechanism but highlighted the significance of weak, anisotropic strata conditions near the intersection of two faults.

This study focuses on the amosite mining region in South Africa and associated health effects, compared to other mined asbestos fiber types. Historically, dust and fiber levels were high in the amosite mills and mines, and many miners and members of the surrounding communities were exposed to the fibers. Research has shown that amosite produces both benign and malignant disease. Nevertheless, the mesotheliomagenic potential of amosite is several fold lower than crocidolite. The risk of disease associated with amosite exposure is difficult to quantify. Reasons for this include the scarcity of available information, including fiber measurements, and case ascertainment, as well as the juxtaposition of the amosite and crocidolite asbestos seams in South Africa. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. The corrosion behaviour of a high-quality rebonded magnesia-chromite refractory in contact with a vacuum oxygen decarburization (VOD) slag with high Al2O3content (15?20 mass per cent) is investigated under VOD process conditions by rotating finger tests in a vacuum induction furnace. The refractory degradation mechanisms are studied by the characterization of corroded microstructures using scanning electron microscopy, equipped with energy dispersive spectroscopy. Mintek is currently developing a design approach for the heap leaching of low-grade primary copper sulphide material. Since the leaching of chalcopyrite requires elevated temperatures, the generation and management of heat within the heap is crucial. Furthermore, the precipitation of iron needs to be managed to prevent premature blinding of the heap, and acid consumption needs to be limited to contain cost and limit the dissolution of gangue impurities. Standard column tests using jacketed 1-m and/or 6-m columns do not allow accurate prediction of temperature changes and heat generation in an actual heap. Mintek therefore utilizes a computer model to calculate the energy balance and heat generation with time, based on the measured sulphide oxidation rates in the column. The temperature in the column is then adjusted to reflect the computer-predicted temperature in an actual heap. Using this approach, an overall copper extraction of 70% was achieved in 120 days, using 1-metre columns, when treating an ore blend containing 1.36% chalcopyrite, 0.23% chalcocite, 0.07% covellite, 3.8% pyrite and silicate gangue (92%). The chalcopyrite contribution to the total copper content in the feed was 75%. This was followed by 6-m columns using a similar approach, and the column results will be validated on a 23,000 tonne test heap. Key Words: heap; bioleach; chalcopyrite

Surface subsidence induced by underground coal mining activities, especially longwall mining operations, can cause various problems to interstate highways ranging from structural integrity, drivability to safety. Accurate subsidence prediction, correct influence assessments, and effective mitigation measures are the keys to ensure the safety of highway traffic. The surface subsidence prediction program, called comprehensive and integrated subsidence prediction model (CISPM), was developed based on the principle of influence function method and has been validated with a large number of subsidence measurements. In this paper, the techniques to use the predicted final surface movements and deformations for assessing their influence on the integrity and functionality of highway structures (e.g., road surface pavements, concrete slabs, transverse joints, etc.), vehicle dynamics, comfort level, and drivability are presented. A number of mitigation measures to protect the highway structures and to ensure traffic safety are proposed along with an application case.

Pulse-forming circuitry is described for use in explosives research that requires precise synchronization and control of events in order to investigate detonation parameters. Included are pulse generators for oscilloscope sweep control, counterchronograph actuators, and a raster-type oscillographic method for the determination of velocities of detonation that are applicable to studies on solid, liquid, and gaseous detonations. INTRODUCTION Prom time to time, requests have been received for information on electronic circuitry used in explosives work at the Explosives Research Laboratory, Bruceton, Pa. The methods used are not entirely original;4 5 6 however, modifications of earlier techniques and some novel design aspects have resulted in time-tested methods that warrant a more detailed description.
