Mechanisation of mining operations is not a new concept in the world of mining. Machinery has been developed, manufactured and used for many decades in massive orebodies and coal mines, both locally and abroad. Because of their size and the huge tonnages available, massive ore bodies lend themselves very easily to mechanisation. However, little progress in mechanisation has been made in narrow tabular orebodies in South Africa. The equipment available for narrow tabular orebodies requires excavations of a size that introduce large volumes of waste dilution. Nevertheless, it is essential for South African miners to experiment with mechanisation and to find a solution to the problem. This address looks at current conventional mining methods and compares them to bord-and-pillar type mining methods. Off-reef mechanisation is also touched on. It then looks at different hybridised mining methods that are being used, i.e. a mixture of conventional mining and mechanisation. It finally looks at future prospects for mechanisation in narrow tabular orebodies.

Computers have revolutionized the collection of data on modern mines. Never before has it been possible to collect data from all aspects of the mining value chain at rates now common. With this has come a new challenge. Deriving information from these copious amounts of data and disseminating it. This problem is being exacerbated by technical software systems, which use proprietary and binary data formats that severely inhibit the flow of data and information both across departments and the larger organization. Generally this had led to data duplication and data redundancy. The Gemcom Enterprise Mining System (GEMS) makes use of industry standard, secure and open databases for all its data objects. It manages multiple users accessing the same bits and bytes in the database, preventing data duplication and redundancy. Developed in the Microsoft BackOffice ® environment, GEMS is also able to leverage the enormous amount of tools available in this environment, whether it’s for e-mail notification, reporting or data capture. Microsoft’s® Active Server Pages are one of these tools. These are standards used to create dynamic and interactive web pages with links into databases and many other objects. The real example outlined in the text, demonstrates how a user anywhere in the world is able to login to a web page and run a query that returns a report with vector plots of performance for the user-selected time frame. As integration is tightened between the various components of the mining value chain, the importance and reliance on ASP pages will grow as the need for management information tools develops. The wide use of carbon steel in construction and engineering projects makes this engineering material accountable for approximately 85% of the total annual steel production worldwide. Despite the lack of corrosion resistance of carbon steel, it is incorporated into the permanent work for marine applications, power plants, transportation projects, chemical processing, mining, petroleum production and refining, pipelines, mining and construction equipment. Corrosion is an electro-chemical process that occurs in the presence of water and air. When an electric current is introduced to water or soil, the rate of carbon steel corrosion increases rapidly. Gaseous atmospheric constituents that are capable of electrolytic activity can also increase the rate of corrosion. Corrosion tends to be more rapid in environments in which the steel is exposed to water, and then air, rather than being constantly submerged. The exposure to seawater increases steel pitting because the electrical conductivity is improved in salt water.

Behaviour studies of metal dusting processes and associated filamentous carbon formation were undertaken on Alloys 600, 601, and 800 using a simulated metal dusting environment of 25C0-70H2-5H20 (vol.%) at 650°C. These samples were studied visually and by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), transmission electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (TEM-EDX) and x-ray diffraction (XRD). Visual examination and SEM surface observation showed that Alloy 800 suffered metal dusting attack at an early exposure reaction period. The coke deposit amounts increased significantly with reaction time from 168 hours to 336 hours in Alloys 600, 601, and 800. Alloy 800 showed pitting after 168 hours' exposure, and the degree of pitting increased after 336 hours. XRD showed all these alloys had a common austenitic phase, with Alloy 800 also having ferritic metal particles. Alloy 800 after 168 hours' exposure had a complex phase mixture on the surface, consisting of ferritic Fe and austenitic FeNi phases. For coke deposit, there were also Fe304, Fe3C and graphitic carbon. The existence of Fe, Ni, and Cr metal particles, and also graphitic carbon in coke deposits, was confirmed by EDX analyses.

Tapira Mine (Tapira, MG, Brazil) is the largest phosphate ore and concentrate producer in Brazil. The mine is an open pit, which until recently operated with a large equipment fleet and now uses a smaller fleet operated by contractors. The annual production reaches 17 Mt of ore plus 14 Mt of waste at a stripping ratio of 0.82. Defining the geological boundaries and forecasting the annual production can be a difficult task if not performed on a reliable model. The geological model has been totally reviewed as well as the estimation process. Ordinary Kriging has been used to build the new block model with P2O5 and contaminant grades. After estimation, block model validation and classification criteria definition to assess resources and reserves, the result is given by the life-of-mine plan is defined after pit optimisation and design. The Lerchs-Grossmann algorithm implemented in the NPV Scheduler was used to define the long-term production targets based on the main parameters P2O5 and the contaminants that are just important to the beneficiation process.

Separation of Iron Particles from Banded Haematite Quartzite (BHQ) Ore by Selective Magnetic Coating The separation of fine iron particles from banded hematite quartzite (BHQ) has been studied using selective magnetic coating. The BHQ ore assays as 38.9 per cent Fe, 42.5 per cent SiO2 and 1.0 per cent Al2O3. Mineralogically, the ore contains hematite and quartz as the major mineral phases where as goethite and magnetite is present in minor entities. Natural magnetite of very fine size and oleate-magnetite in colloidal form, prepared synthetically in the laboratory are used as the coating material on the surface of hematite particles. The selective coatings of oleate-magnetite on BHQ surfaces followed by magnetic separation studies have indicated that, it is possible to achieve 62.3 per cent Fe with 8.5 per cent SiO2 at 85.4 per cent iron recovery. The recovery of iron values is found to be superior in comparison to the conventional magnetic separation techniques. The selectivity of coating for enhancing the magnetic response of iron particles is achieved by controlling the surface properties of the particle via electrokinetic potential adjustment by controling pH and addition of oleate-magnetite. In the separation process, the effects of pH, magnetic intensity and addition of oleate-magnetite are studied to achieve the maximum grade and recovery of iron values. The optimum separation is observed at pH of 7.5, oleate-magnetite concentration of 0.25 ml/g of BHQ ore and a magnetic intensity of around 0.8 Tesla. The X-ray diffraction (XRD), Infra-red spectroscopy (IR) and UV-visible spectroscopic studies strongly suggest preferential coating of magnetite on hematite surfaces. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies have brought out the semi-quantitative features of BHQ ore. The recovery of iron values from a lean grade ore such as BHQ is carried out looking into the future needs of this ore in India for iron and steel making.

Electromagnetic wire rope testing is the only practical non-destructive method to evaluate the current condition of wire ropes in general, and in the mining industry in particular. The method has been successfully used worldwide for decades. In mining it has considerably improved the safety of operations. Yet, problems persist. In particular both the Loss-of-Metallic-Area (LMA) readings, as well as the Local Fault (LF) readings, as obtained by different instrument operators, were found to be unacceptably diverse. Consequently, large sums have been spent internationally, as well as in Canada, comparing a whole range of these instruments in an effort to rate their performance. The published results clearly confirmed operational experience, namely that the LMA and LF readings were, indeed, unacceptably diverse. Excellent pertinent conclusions were also published. In Canada the authors? conclusion was that while the divergence in the LF signal based results could, possibly, be attributed to both hardware and human-error related factors, the LMA signal related quantitative uncertainties were human-error related. Consequently, much attention was paid in Canada to developing novel control methods, namely computerized ones to replace the more error-prone analogue ones. In addition new sensor-heads were developed, both for portable as well as for permanent installation with remote control operations. While these efforts were of considerable benefit, the situation must again be carefully reviewed with very special reference to deep-level mining, now of immediate concern in Canada as well. In this paper the authors supply an overview of the results obtained by three of the four major international projects referred to previously. Relevant conclusions/comments are also restated. Moreover, specific recommendations are put forward as to how current problems might best be remedied.

Platinum-group minerals (PGM) are recorded from a number of localities along theWaiau River, western Southland, and the south coast of the South Island, New Zealand. At each locality, small amounts of PGMs were recovered as by-products of historical gold mining operations. During the period 1890-1950 an estimated 1000-2000 oz. of æplatinumÆ were recovered from the region, the only area within New Zealand where PGM have been commercially exploited. The PGM suite of southern New Zealand consists of Pt-Fe alloys, IPGE (iridium subgroup, platinum-group elements) alloys, sperrylite (PtAs2), cooperite (PtS) and braggite ((Pt,Pd)S). The composition of Pt-Fe alloy exhibits considerable variation and two compositional populations are recognised. Some Pt-Fe alloy grains are chemically zoned. Iridium is the most abundant IPGE alloy phase and often contains considerable Pt, in contrast to osmium and ruthenium alloys. Cooperite and braggite grains are characterised by extremely low concentrations of Ni.   Exsolution of osmium and iridium from Pt-Fe alloy and Pt-Fe alloy from iridium is observed Several PGM host mineral inclusions which vary from single to poly-phase, display rounded to equant outlines and range in diameter from greater than 100 ¦m to less than 5 ¦m. Olivine and Ni-sulphide inclusions are only present within IPGE alloys. Pt-Fe alloy, cooperite, braggite and sperrylite host Cu-Fe sulphides, a wide variety of PGM, clinopyroxene, amphibole, magnetite and plagioclase within inclusions. Sperrylite also hosts Pd bismuthiotellurides, gold and several potassium-rich silicate phases. Similarities in inclusion phases and mineral chemistry from several localities suggest that the PGM are derived from a single (as yet unidentified), probably calc-alkaline magmatic source. This source is situated somewhere along the margins of the western Southland sedimentary basin where PGM liberated by erosion are transported down the Waiau River and dispersed eastwards along the coast by strong longshore currents.

The separation of certain minerals by electrostatic techniques can be difficult due to their similar electrical conductivity, and any technique to improve this can be useful in certain difficult separation applications. Triboelectric differences between mineral scan result in certain minerals acquiring small positive or negative charges prior to inductive electrostatic separation. By changing the polarity of inductive separation, relative changes in mineral recovery can be observed, which may be beneficial. In this brief study a JKTech mineral liberation analyser (MLA) was used to evaluate the effect of polarity change on selected minerals present in the Richards Bay Minerals deposit, and an approximate triboelectric series based on this behaviour is presented.

A new type of steady-state thermal conductivity apparatus is presented and described. Results of measurements on Berea sandstone, Solehofen limestone, Bandera sandstone and Bakelite are presented. The measurements were made in a two-hour period at temperatures up to 80C and axial stress to 125 bars. Results show that the thermoelectric heat pump and tbermistor-controlled electric heater can be used in a steady-state apparatus for measuring thermal conductivity of mck. Steady-state is reached within two hours. With Urethane foam insulation, not more than 3 per cent of heat is lost by radial flaw. The apparatus can be used as a comparator or for absolute thermal conductivity determinations. INTRODUCTION Calculations of heat flow through the earth, both for scientific purposes and engineering design, require thermal-conductivity data on rock. However, the high variability of rock often makes handbook thermal-conductivity data of little value. For engineering purposes in particular, it is desirable to have measured data on samples of the rock mass under study. Laboratory methods for measuring thermal conductivity of rock use either time-dependent1-3 or steady - state temperatures .4,5 The time -dependent (transient) techniques give thermal diffusivity from which thermal conductivity can be calculated if the specific heat and density of the sample is known. Most transient techniques require lengthy and involved sample preparation. Also, the accuracy tends to be low. Steady-state techniques are more exact and are the most commonly used. The steady-state methods, however, also have their difficulties. A long time is often required to reach steady state, troubles have been encountered in establishing good thermal contact between the heating and cooling elements and the rock sample, and unaccounted-for heat losses are difficult to prevent. In this paper we present a description of a new type of steady-state thermal conductivity apparatus. With it, measurements have been made in two hours at temperatures up to 80C and axial stress to 125 bars. Sample preparation is simple and no thermal conductivity standard is needed.6 APPARATUS Our steady-state apparatus is an improvement . over the conduction pile used by Zierfuss and van der vliet4 and Somerton.5 A linear heat flux is established through a conduction pile consisting of the rock sample and a standard material of known thermal conductivity in series. Batu Hijau is a porphyry copper-gold deposit located onSumbawa Island in the western Banda Arc of Indonesia. The deposit has been evaluated from 54 000 m of drilling in 105 diamond drill holes over a surface area of 1.2 km2 and to a depth of 1000 m below surface (412 m below sea level). A provisional plan is being evaluated to mine 642 million tonnes at an average grade of 0.61% Cu and 0.55 g/t Au (variable cut-off) from an open pit in the higher grade portion of the resource.   The deposit is associated with a calc-alkaline intrusive complex that was emplaced in a thick sequence of andesitic pyroclastic rocks. The oldest and most widespread intrusion is porphyritic to medium-grained, equigranular, quartz hornblende diorite. At Batu Hijau the western diorite contact zone was intruded by two phases of tonalite. The older tonalite is a stock increasing from 200 m diameter at surface to 500 m at sea level. It consists of quartz, plagioclase and hornblende phenocrysts set in a groundmass of similar composition. A younger tonalite intrudes the tonalite stock, quartz and plagioclase phenocrysts are more abundant and it has a finer groundmass than the older tonalite. Brecciation occurs near the older tonalite contacts but there are no breccia pipes or late-stage features such as pebbledykes or postmineralisation intrusive rocks.   Hydrothermal alteration of Old Tonalite and adjacent rocks is centred on the Old Tonalite and is zoned from a core of pervasive potassic alteration grading to an outer propylitic halo. At depth a propylitic assemblage is developed in the low grade core in the Old Tonalite. Phyllic alteration, late stage and mainly fracture controlled, overprints both potassic and inner propylytic zones. Intermediate argillic alteration overprinting is widespread, particularly on the eastern side of the hydrothermal system, where advanced argillic alteration overlies argillic alteration.   Ore grade mineralisation is cylindrical in shape, up to 800 m in diameter, and is centred on the Old Tonalite. A high grade shell (>0.75% Cu) forms an upward tapering cone in and around the Old Tonalite and reaches the surface in the centre of the deposit. Lower in the shell >l g/t Au and >2 g/t Ag accompany >1% Cu. Below 75 m above sea level mineralisation in the Old Tonalite rapidly decreases as a weakly mineralised core develops, but the limb continues to contain mineralisation to at least 412 m below sea level. Fracture and vein-controlled chalcopyrite and bornite are the dominant hypogene copper minerals and are the hosts for most of the gold mineralisation. Gold occurs free and in the lattice of the copper sulphides, and has been observed in quartz.   Weathering, especially where argillic alteration is developed, has produced a strongly leached cap, up to 147 m thick, below which is an irregular copper enriched supergene zone. Where leaching is not developed, such as over the centre of the deposit, an irregular oxide zone and a weakly developed supergene zone may be present.

The construction of drilled shafts as well as other cast in place foundation alternatives relies heavily on good practices from the contractor, engineer, and inspector in order to produce a quality foundation element. As many of the installation methods involve blind concreting processes, it is difficult to be certain of an intact concrete mass of the intended dimensions. A new integrity test has been developed that provides additional insight into the integrity of drilled shaft concrete. By measuring the temperature throughout the shaft via standard access tubes, the measured temperature profile can be compared to the normal signature associated with a shaft of the specified size. This article provides an overview of the new method development, test procedure, analysis, and results.

Fluctuating metal prices, declining head grade, and increased operational costs are forcing many open pit mining companies to look to their balance sheets for significant cost reductions in order to remain competitive. Maintenance continues to represent a significant proportion of the total operating costs in the mining industry. Compared with the other major cost components of the mining process, very little effort has gone into maintenance optimization. The potential payoff from maintenance optimization on the cash cost of the commodity is enormous. A large percentage of these costs are incurred in unscheduled maintenance events, which typically cause serious disruptions to the production process. These maintenance-induced production losses can be a significant contributor to the overall operating costs. A structured proactive maintenance approach using the latest advances in technology can achieve dramatic cost reductions and productivity improvements. Remote condition monitoring systems are becoming increasingly commonplace and have the potential to identify problems prior to failure. Detection of equipment degradation prior to failure will enable repairs to be scheduled thereby reducing costs and interruptions to production. Remote condition monitoring technology has evolved rapidly in recent years, with a host of new tools becoming available to assist mine operators in improving their maintenance operations. These tools have capabilities such as remote real-time vital signs and performance monitoring, alarm/event handling, trend analysis, and maintenance workflow management. When these monitoring tools are used in conjunction with a mine management system, the vital signs data can be integrated and associated with maintenance history, predictive maintenance data, operational information, and geographical information. This integrated approach to the management of vital maintenance data will help shift the mobile equipment maintenance paradigm from reactive to proactive. This paper will introduce a proactive approach to the management of the maintenance process and the tools required to facilitate this process.

Based on relative CO2, N2, and 3He contents, geothermal systems of the Taupo Volcanic Zone, TVZ, can be subdivided into two major groups: arc-type systems, associated with andesitic magmatism along the eastern boundary of the TVZ, and rift-type systems over its western parts. The highly increased N2/3He, CO2/3He and CO2/Cl ratios of the former are ascribed to entrainment of large proportions of volatiles of subducted, marine sedimentary origin. The largely rhyolitic, rift-type magmas are assumed to have formed from volatile-depleted, residual melts. Correlations of Cl and CO2 with heat contents suggest that formation of the two types of source magmas involves mixing of two end member components: a low-volatile melt with a heat/Cl ratio of 25 Ml/mol (0.7 MJ/g), and a low Cl vapor with a heat/CO2 ratio of 5 Ml/mol. On the basis of these values, the heat associated with andesitic magmas is found to be carried in close to equal parts by both vapor and melt; for the rhyolitic melts the proportion contributed from the vapor is only about 2%. The heat/He ratios of the rhyolitic source magmas for the rift-type geothermal discharges from the TVZ of 0.12¦0.05 Ml/pmol is within the range of 0.05 to 0.2 Ml/pmol of the upper mantle. The higher heat/3He ratios for the arc-related magmas of 0.4¦0.2 Ml/pmol are likely to be due to the high proportions of heat carried in the form of a separate, low 3He vapor phase derived largely from subducted sediments.

"This paper presents results from the proposed cyanide detoxification circuit for Seabridge Gold’s KSM project. The proposed flowsheet uses a two-stage CCD (counter-current washing/decantation) circuit to transfer the flotation products CIL(carbon-in-leach) barren solution to a SART process (Sulphidization, Acidification, Recycling of precipitate, and Thickening of precipitate) to recover copper and free cyanide from the copper cyanide complex. The SART barren solution is then treated by an AVR process (Acidification, Volatilization of HCN gas, and Reneutralization) to concentrate the cyanide that was liberated in SART for recycling to leach. The washed CIL barren pulp (the CCD underflow) is treated with the SO2 /Air process to oxidize residual cyanide.The goal of this complex flowsheet is to recover and recycle as much cyanide as possible and produce a final effluent containing less than 0.5 mg/L copper and CNWAD at the lowest cost. The SO2/air process is capable of achieving low residual CNWAD (<1 mg/L) in the final product, but the persistence of aqueous copper above the target level has been detected in the treated solution in some instances. The expected high concentrations of copper and cyanide in the KSM CIL barren ( >200 mg/L each species) and the difficulties this might create for the SO2 /air process was a key factor in the decision to consider including the washing, SART and AVR steps in the project flowsheet.The target concentrations of CNWAD and Cu were readily achieved after aging the SO2 /air treated pulp, as would occur in a tailing or polishing pond. This suggests no additional treatment will be required to sustain low levels of these species in the final plant effluent."

The epizonal Ag-Pb-Zn vein deposit at San Bartolome is characterised by a base-metal sulphide assemblage containing the spectacular development of interpenetrating, bladed networks of pyrrhotite which have been replaced by marcasite and pyrite. A similar assemblage displaying the same crystal habits and textures are also a diagnostic feature of the Sn and SnAg deposits ofBolivia. On this basis, it is reasonable to conclude that both deposits were formed from fluids of similar nature and origin. Although no economic accumulation of Sn is known in San Bartolome, further comparison of the geologic setting, age, mineralogy, fluid inclusion data and magmatic association of this deposit with the Bolivian systems has highlighted additional similarities consistent with a hypothesis that more extensive Sn mineralisation might exist in the San Bartolome area.

Eng (Mining Engineering) degree The stability of a ferrosilicon dense medium suspension is one of the most important parameters to keep under control since it determines the density gradient of the medium in the separation zone and thus directly influences separation sharpness. The stability of ferrosilicon suspensions were characterized using settling tests employing a differential pressure method. Particles smaller than 45 µm and especially the ore fines played an important role in the settling behaviour of the solids. Cable bolts have been very effective in mine ground control. Non-tensioned and tensioned cable bolts are now used for both primary and supplemental bolting (Suder, 2001; Mirabile, 2010). In the United States, cable bolts are typically installed in either 1 or 1-3/8 in. (25 or 35 mm) diameter drill holes and, if point anchored only, are utilized with 4 - 5 equivalent feet (1.2 - 1.5 m) of resin. Cable bolts can be tensioned by various methods such as using an expansion shell mounted on the cable or post-tensioned with a hydraulic cable tensioning unit. In recent years there has been a desire to completely encapsulate the cable bolt for corrosion protection. Fully encapsulating a cable bolt with traditional resins can be very difficult. Keystone Mining Services, LLC (KMS) and Jennmar Corporation have developed a new cable bolt that can be fully encapsulated during installation or post-installation with polyurethane (PUR). The Fully-Grouted Cable Bolt (FGCB)* is equipped with a special head that allows the injection of PUR up through the cable bolt head and cable strands, completely encapsulating the cable and filling the drill hole. Although the FGCB was initially developed to fully encapsulate the cable for corrosion protection, it was also found that by modifying the cable bolt head and injection pressure, PUR could be injected into cracks and fissures of the strata to stabilize the roof. This paper details the development of this system and three underground applications under different ground conditions.

Owing to the increased consumption of sulphuric acid; Australian manufacturers have, from time to time, been seeking for a satisfactory source of sulphur that would make them independent of foreign supplies.Some years ago a considerable amount of acid was obtained from the roasting of Spanish pyrites. This ore, in 1913 or thereabouts, cost 16s. per ton f.o.b. Huelva, and freight to the eastern seaboard of Australia was about 20s. per ton. As the ore contained 48% to 50% of available sulphur, it was costing roughly 9d. or 10d. per unit, and, in addition, the cinder, after roasting, was a product of considerable value to smelters, containing as it did a high percentage of iron suitable for fluxing, and appreciable values in silver and gold.
