"Although ore sorting in mining is not a new concept, sensor-based sorting has failed to gain broad acceptance due to perceived challenges with the technology. In order to gain wider applications, this research focuses on treating waste rock and low-grade ore to identify and test appropriate sensors and to evaluate the response. Results showed that amenability of rocks to sensor-based ore sorting is both sensor and ore specific. It was also observed that the efficiency (recovery) of sorting is directly influenced by the degree of heterogeneity of the rocks. The overall outcome showed that with the right sensor, several of the materials tested are amenable to sensor-based ore sorting. Mining companies could benefit from multiple economic and design impacts, such as lower energy cost, lower transportation costs, higher metal recoveries and smaller footprints that lead to more sustainable mining. This paper will focus on the effects of heterogeneity of rocks on sorting potential and efficiency.IntroductionSensor-based ore sorting has been attracting more attention since the pressure for effective resource extraction and management has increased. An urge to make most of the current deposits, and to make the low-grade deposits economic to mine has ushered the technology to find new ways to overcome the new challenges. No matter the terminology used, such as coarse beneificiation, waste rejection, particle or bulk sorting, the purpose of sensor-based ore sorting is to remove low-grade rocks before the comminution circuit, increasing the feed head grade and quality while reducing the energy costs related to comminution.Despite nominal advantages, there have always been some concerns that have impeded the intorduction and acceptance of the technology. One of the most important shortcomings of ore sorting is their capability, or capacity, to keep up with the high-tonnage mining. Some other issues that have been mentioned as drawbacks to sorting include installation cost of such devices, feed preparation for effiecient sorting along with accuracy of sorting and probability of false negatives (Manouchehri, 2003)."

The development of information concerning mesothelioma in South Africa started with the 1959 finding of Dr. J. Christopher Wagner of cases of mesothelioma in persons living in the vicinity or working in crocidolite mines in Cape Province. After more than 40 years, the data from South Africa now provide important insights into the differences in mesothelioma risk associated with different asbestos fiber-types. Three case series reports and one analytical report were reviewed in this session. In total, information on 504 proven cases was presented. There were 28% of cases arising from occupational exposure in mining, 35% from non-mining occupations, 23% from environmental exposures; 14% where no exposure was established and 9% where the exposure was unknown. Among the 129 cases for which occupational exposure and asbestos fiber-type were established, 115 cases were associated with occupational exposure to Cape crocidolite; 1 case associated with occupational exposure to Transvaal crocidolite and 9 cases with occupational exposure to amosite (grunerite asbestos) and 4 cases with occupational exposure to mixed fiber-types. There were no cases associated with chrysotile asbestos. There were 33 cases of environmental mesothelioma linked to Cape crocidolite exposure and 2 to exposure to amosite and crocidolite but none to Transvaal amosite alone or to chrysotile. The evidence shows that amosite is capable of causing mesothelioma but that the major risk in South Africa is associated with Cape crocidolite.

Sedimentary pyrites from Tasmania have Se contents that are high for it province showing no overall Se enrichment. Sulphides from Devonian granitic rocks, and related cassiterite-sulphide deposits, Sn-Wand PbZn-Ag fissure veins have similar and relatively low Se contents, and pyrites from Devonian gold-quartz veins have very low Se contents. The high concentrations of Se at Mount Lyell are consistent with enrichment in pyritic Cu deposits in volcanic rocks elsewhere, and the dispersion of Se is consistent with a surface volcanic origin for several of the orebodies. In contrast, sulphides from Cambrian volcanic rocks and associated granitic rocks, and from the Rosebery and Hercules pyritic PbZn deposits, also believed to be of volcanic origin, are impoverished in Se.In the Mount Bischoff cassiterite-sulphide deposits there is no relationship between Se content of sulphides and temperature of formation as indicated by fluid inclusion studies, and sulphides from Devonian ores with different temperatures of formation have similar Se contents.The Se content of Tasmanian sulphides appears to be an unsatisfactory discriminant of their genesis and temperature of formation but in volcanic terrains may be a useful pathfinder for Cu concentrations.

It is fairly common practice to reinject water into the aquifer near the oil-water interface in water-drive reservoirs. There have been many studies of aquifer behavior without reinjection,l-5 but apparently no analytical studies have been made to indicate performance when injection wells are present in the aquifer. The diffusivity equation may be used to describe the pressure behavior in an aquifer. When sources are present it can be written as A general solution of Eq. 1 may be obtained as the sum of two solutions. One is a general solution of the homogeneous equation, obtained by dropping the source term in Eq. 1 and still satisfying the required boundary conditions. Another is a general solution of Eq. 1 satisfying homogeneous boundary conditions.1° The first solution, which corresponds to the aquifer without reinjection, has been given quantitative and qualitative treatment in the literature.l-5,8,9 The latter solution will be treated here. Solutions with variable injection rates are obtained by superimposing solutions with constant rates, so we have considered only the latter. Five cases have been treated here: 1. A linear aquifer of finite width and extent. Water is injected into the aquifer at point xo, yo at constant rate. The pressure along the line x = 0 is maintained at zero pressure. (See Fig. 1.) Equations showing the pressure distribution, rates, velocity and cumulative influx have been developed. Certain numerical results are shown. 2. A linear aquifer of finite width and extent. Fosterville gold mine recently celebrated production of its one millionth ounce of gold based firmly within a history of refractory sulfide gold mining. Compared with other Victorian gold mines, the disseminated nature of the sulfide gold is a deposit style with low estimation variance combined with established processes to accurately delineate the controlling structures. The systems in place had been established and have worked effectively for the majority of the one million produced ounces.By the end of 2014, diamond drill campaigns targeting the lower Phoenix orebody at depths of 800 m below surface began showing a change to the nature of the gold within the deposit. Coarse visible gold within 0.5–2 m thick quartz carbonate veins were being intersected with regularity showing the emergence of a different zone of gold mineralisation.Data about the new and exciting discovery couldn’t be gathered fast enough, however, established systems and processes throughout the geology and processing departments were not developed to handle a coarse gold environment. Change would be commensurate with the size and scale of the discovery, and new learnings would need to be implemented quickly to keep in front of a mining schedule that was focused on producing tonnes due to the dropping grades of the sulfide ore.Gold assays being returned were showing that the gold nature was different to those of other Victorian deposits. Comparative to the highly nuggety nature of gold found in other Victorian goldfields, the fine grained gold accumulations were dispersed in relatively consistent narrow linear trends grading consistently into the hundreds of grams per tonne. New drill intersections were being returned by the day and research to find developed orebodies that had published information into how to handle such a rapid change yielded few examples.The challenge was to review and set new standards with regards to handling an orebody that transitioned the very nature of the gold being mined. This involved reviewing all steps in the estimation process including data capture and quality control and quality assurance through to mineral liberation through the mill. Difficulties also involved finding analogous orebodies that consisted of both free milling and refractory ores that were dealing with drill assays that were measured as percentages of gold.CITATION:Phillips, N, 2017. The use of augered cast-in-place piles has seen tremendous growth under commerical structures in the past twenty years. Problems with vibration, soil densification and/or heave associated with driven piles do not occur with properly installed augered piles. Augered cast-in-place piles were originally constructed (1950s) with diameters of .31 m (12 in.) and lengths up to 6.1 m (20 ft); however with the advent of better drilling equipment, diameters varying from .41m(16 in.)to .61 m (24 in.) and typical depths ranging from 18.3 m (60 ft) to 24.4 m (80 ft) are achievable. Reinforcement may vary from a single high strength rebar (Grade 60) at the top of the pile to a continuous steel cage depending on loading (compression, tension-uplift, and lateral). Typical axial design loads (compression) for a single augered cast-in-place pile are in the 445 kN (50 tons) to 890 kN (100 tons) range.

TURBO blowers for blast-furnace blowing have now been in use for some years, and a review of the experience gained and the present state of progress may be interesting. FIG. 1.-STEAM TURBINE DIRECT CONNECTED TO AIR COMPRESSOR. The first blast-furnace blowing engine of this type to be installed in America was built by the General Electric Co. and is installed at the oxford Furnace of the Empire Iron & Steel Co. This machine was put into operation March 8, 191.0. A duplicate unit is situated at the furnace of the Northern Iron Co. at Port Henry, N. Y., which unit was put into opera ion June 30, 1910 (Fig. 1).

The adverse health impacts from diesel particulate matter (DPM) exposure are a well-known global concern. The building evidence has triggered underground mining operations to review existing atmospheric conditions and assess the scale of the challenge faced. South32’s Cannington Mine (Cannington) evaluated the ability to provide a healthy atmosphere from a whole mine approach, taking into account existing preventative controls including: maintenance strategies, fuel quality, mining operations, ventilation provisions, monitoring protocols and effective education and training programs.During the evaluation process, Cannington gave due recognition to the advice and guidance provided in the Queensland Guidance Note 21 (QGN21), the Guidelines of New South Wales’ MDG29 and Mining Industry Advisory Committee (MIAC) of Western Australia. Each of these documents advises a dilution rate of >0.06 m3/s/kW is best for reduction of DPM exposure in underground mines.Achieving the prescribed mine ventilation rate typically results in the need to directly invest significant capital into increasing ventilation infrastructure in order to further dilute contaminants. In today’s economic market of volatile metal prices and increasing pressures to meet regulatory requirements, it can become challenging for established metalliferous operations to create a balance between optimisation of current ventilation infrastructure and capital outlay.In order to obtain and correctly justify the requirements for capital investiture Cannington conducted a ventilation operational analysis for the life-of-operation, identifying the existing air volume envelope was adequate for current and future production rates by optimising existing primary ventilation infrastructure through the implementation of a modified ventilation on demand (VoD) and air conservation system.This process achieved sustainable operating and capital cost reductions without compromising delivery of adequate ventilation to work areas. The process also recognised that engaging mine workers’ ownership of their work areas is crucial to maintaining a technically efficient and operationally robust ventilation system.This paper will concentrate on Cannington’s existing preventative controls, their implementation and their management for the prevention of increased DPM exposure; reducing the risk of both short and long-term health impacts to ‘as low as reasonably achievable’ (ALARA).CITATION:Black, J and Reid, D, 2017. The need to hoist increasing loads from great depths is leading to the more general adoption of winders of the Koepe and Blair types. The trend has introduced a number of new problems in winding ropes, more particularly in the Koepe system where regular destructive tests during the life of a rope are not possible. Consequently, the importance of introducing non-destructive tests is much greater, especially so in the case of Koepe ropes used for deep winding where there are three major destructive fatiguing influences. These are rotational effects when a vertical rope is changed end-for- end each trip, the much greater range of stress to which the rope is subjected each trip as compared with drum winding, and the destructive effect of a high coefficient of friction between wheel and rope. A plea for a lower coefficient in the interest of better rope and tread life, substantiated by analysis, is made for Koepe winders operating at depth.Co-ordination of rope testing with general hoisting problems is stressed and the active participation of the Wire Rope Committee of the Australian Mineral Industries Research Association Ltd. in the promotion ofthe project is noted.The general introduction of a rope testing programme in Australia, personnel requirements and some local basic research in the subject to cope with future demands are considered.

In recent years the Augered Cast-In-Place (ACIP) Pile industry has seen a substantial increase in the quality control options available to Contractors, Engineers, and Owners. Quality control methods range from the simple, manual techniques that have been used for years to new computerized installation monitoring equipment and nondestructive testing methods. Our ability to monitor and test ACIP piles has grown to such a degree that the industry is struggling to determine how much quality control is enough. This paper reviews the many options available and describes the pros and cons of each. The various nondestructive testing methods, in particular, have been difficult to apply reliably due to misapplications of methods and misinterpretation of the results. ACIP piles have unique properties that require the various nondestructive testing methods available be considered very carefully in determining the method most appropriate for a particular use. Some nondestructive testing methods, as well as automated monitoring equipment, potentially can be applied effectively to increase the level of quality control for ACIP piles. The experience gained on real projects using these new methods, in conjunction with the old procedures, provides valuable information for future applications.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with Carter Mining Co., conducted vibration tests of four off-road vehicle seats. The purpose of the tests was to determine which seat provided the best vibration attenuation under laboratory conditions. Laboratory tests were constructed to simulate the mining vibration environment within the limitations of the test equipment. The acceleration test levels and corresponding response of the seats were low compared to IS0 2631's fatigue-decreased-proficiency time limits. Two of the seats employed mechanical suspensions and two seats employed air suspensions. The seats were tested using a 22,241-N (5,000-lbf) electrodynamic shaker. Mechanical suspension seats were tested with various preload-to-mass ratios (PMR's) and cushion densities. Air suspension seats were tested with various air pressure levels and seat cushion densities. Air suspension seats provided good vibration attenuation if pressurized greater than 552 kPa (80 psi). Mechanical suspension seats' attenuation performance decreased if the PMR exceeded 9.8. Seat cushions of lower density provided less vibration damping.

Each year, hundreds of mine workers are involved in machinery-related accidents. Many of these accidents involve inadequate or improper use of lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures. To mitigate the occurrence of these accidents, new safety methods are needed to monitor access to hazardous areas around operating machinery, improve documentation/monitoring of maintenance that requires shutdown of the machinery, and prevent unexpected startup or movement during machine maintenance activities. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is currently researching the application of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to provide intelligent machine monitoring as part of a comprehensive LOTO program. This paper introduces NIOSH’s two phase implementation of an IoT-based intelligent machine monitoring system. Phase one is the installation of a proof-of-concept system at a concrete batch plant, while phase two involves scaling up the system to include additional sensors, more detailed safety/performance metrics, proximity detection, and predictive failure analysis.

This paper describes a design-build project for the construction of a tanker wharf for 150,000 dwt vessels. The tankers deliver oil from offshore oil fields to a Transshipment terminal on the south coast of Newfoundland. The project described is an expansion to a previously constructed facility, adding an additional berth. The first berth was designed conventionally as concrete structures supported on groups of independent, single piles. The second berth was awarded to Peter Kiewit Sons' Co. Ltd. based on an alternate design which utilized a "jacket" concept whereby prefabricated steel frames are placed on the seabed and serve as permanent templates and also give lateral support to the piles, thereby increasing their load capacity. This led to economies and time savings. Discussed herein is the design process and the field installation, covering the jackets, driven pipe piles, and the rock anchors.

A high explosives shock tube has been constructed and developed to test blast resistant windows with pressure versus time waveforms similar to waveforms generated by arena testing. Calibration of the high explosives shock tube, or Large Arena Test Simulator (LATS), included numerous tests performed by detonating varying charge weights at different distances from three piezoelectric pressure sensors located at one end of the shock tube (where the test subject would be installed). The maximum reflected pressure and positive phase impulse were calculated for each waveform generated in the tests. Pressure versus distance and impulse versus distance graphs were generated. Results have been graphed in order to predict charge weights and distances that correlate to the desired pressure and impulse at the end of the tube for future tests. This is a valuable tool when testing expensive, job specific components so the loading requirements are met on the first attempt.

Forty one whole rock samples from the Gold Cross low-sulfidation epithermal Au-Ag deposit have d18O values that range from 4.4 to 9.3 per mil, with an average value of 7.0 per mil. Unaltered and weakly altered rocks have d18O values greater than eight per mil, and the orebody is surrounded by samples that are depleted in 18O. A strongly silicified sample adjacent to the Empire Vein System has a d18O value of 9.0 per mil, similar to previously reported analyses of vein quartz (7.0 to 11.7ë, average 9.4ë). This suggests that, in detail, Golden Cross may have a zone of 18O-enriched wall rocks in the core of the deposit, adjacent to the main underground veins. Although some workers have suggested that stable isotope geochemistry may provide useful information for epithermal mineral deposit exploration, at Golden Cross this is not the case. Alteration minerals, major elements and trace elements all define larger, less ambiguous halos than the zone of 18O-depleted wall rocks.

Hydrogen fuelcells are a known technology, having been applied to stationary (e.g equipment, buildings, power plants) and vehicle applications (e.g transit buses, space shuttles). There is currently a growing need to provide alternate power systems to diesel fuel for underground mining vehicles to improve underground air quality and reduce production costs and green house gas emissions. To date, however, fuelcells have not been exposed to underground mine air and physical conditions. A testing program was carried out to provide information on the vulnerabilities of fuelcells as part of a number of proof-of-concept projects to apply hydrogen power to underground mining vehicles. The fuelcell type of choice for the industry, the Proton Exchange Membrane, would function at the range of temperatures encountered in underground and surface operations, and use hydrogen that is stored under low pressure and risk. A small fuelcell stack was tested in a cooperative project between CANMET, the Fuelcell Propulsion Institute, INCO, the Ontario Ministry of Labour, Sandia National laboratories and H-Power. This article will review the tests carried out to measure the effects from high humidity, mineral dust, diesel emission gasses and diesel particulate matter as well as from shock and vibration provided to the unit in underground conditions, at INCO?s 175 Orebody minesite and INCO?s Stobie Mine. The test results provided will show that the unit was not affected by the underground conditions: physically and electrically the unit performed without any reduction in operation or adverse effects imposed.

"Pyhäsalmi Mine in Finland has a long history of continuous process development. The concentrator processes Cu-Zn-sulphide ore with high recoveries. An on-line flotation simulator has been developed to maintain and further improve the flotation performance. Consisting of a flotation kinetic dynamic model, and interconnected with process control software, the simulator can be used for training new control room operators in various scenarios. For daily operation, the model parameters are continuously adapted to take into account the changing process conditions. On-line simulator tracking the process can provide the process operator new information in several ways: a) values of unmeasured process variables are obtained by displaying the corresponding simulator values, b) predictions of future process states and outputs are calculated and displayed, c) information of changing process parameters can be used as an indicator of e.g. change in the processed ore type. This paper describes the adaptive simulation system and its usage at the Pyhäsalmi concentrator.IntroductionPyhäsalmi massive sulphide orebody is located in central Finland. Operation of the mine started in 1962 and it is currently producing copper (Cu), zinc (Zn) and sulphur (S) concentrates. The concentrator control and optimization system has a long history of successful continuous development during the past decades (see e.g. Huuskonen & Moilanen, 2010). An on-stream analyzer has been a part of the automatic process control since 1968 (Lähteenmäki, Miettunen & Saloheimo, 1999). First control algorithms based on a flotation mathematical model were developed in 1971 (Koivistoinen & Miettunen, 1985). In 1990’s the development of a froth machine vision systems started (Kaartinen, 2009; Kaartinen, Roine & Hätönen, 2009). More recently Pyhäsalmi Mine Oy has been involved with several national development projects dealing with particle size distribution measurements (Kaartinen & Tolonen, 2008), spectral analysis of flotation slurries (Haavisto, Kaartinen & Hyötyniemi, 2008), and dynamic simulation of flotation processes. The latter topic is further elaborated in this paper."

Proper analysis of washabiity data can lead to the development of a maximum yield coal preparation plant flow sheet. Simulations, as simple as spreadsheet mass and water balancing, are important in examining yield maximization and middlings liberation. Key to such attribute tracking flow sheet simulations is the distribution model, expressing the probability of a species reporting to the product stream. There are many such models in the literature. This paper examines a functional form that can represent or fit most of the proposed distribution functions.
