Grey River Gold Mining Ltd commenced dredging alluvial flats in the Grey River Valley in 1989. Previous drilling indicated over 100 million cubic metres of gravels with some 90 per cent of the gold in the bottom seven metres. The dredge built by Rahco, Spokane, was innovative in a number of aspects but particularly in the fact that a separate ladder with a cutter and pump was used to strip the overburden and a bucketline to mine the gold bearing wash below. Metallurgical studies and exploration were initiated when the project commenced. Leasing and environmental considerations were investigated and action taken. While progress is being made, the operation at this stage is not meeting required production and performance. Main problems have been with the stripping system and wear.

Greywackes of the greater Auckland Region (Brynderwyn Hills to Hamilton), when considered on a regional scale, have characteristic ranges of physical, mineralogical and other properties. Some properties (eg density, porosity, crushing resistance, clay index) generally cluster and correlate with the basement greywacke facies, regions and terranes recognised by geologists, and their diagenetic/metamorphic level. Other local factors, particularly variations in mineralogical composition, nature of matrix cement, grain size, and degree of weathering may produce aberrant properties. Some of these local variations, when extreme, have the potential to affect the aggregateÆs performance in roading or the concrete industries.   Smectite and the zeolite laumontite are the major deleterious minerals occurring in fresh greywacke rocks of the Auckland region, although weathered rocks may contain halloysite, an expanding member of the kaolin clay mineral group. These minerals, when found in abnormally high levels in greywackes cause expansion effects in the aggregate. Currently there are inconsistencies in the detailed correlation of shrinkage, clay index, clay mineral content and intrinsic expansion data that need further research to resolve them.

Quantitative seismology is an important tool for investigating mineinduced seismicity and the quantification of the seismic rock mass response. The spatio-temporal interpretation of seismic data within an ever-changing three-dimensional mining environment provides some challenges to the interpretation of the rock mass response. A grid-based approach for the interpretation of spatial variation of the rock mass response provides some benefits compared with approaches based on spatial filters. This paper discusses a grid-based interpretation of seismic data. The basic methods employed in the evaluation of the parameter values through space are discussed and examples of applications to different mine sites given.

Pilot plant grinding and concentration test results indicate that conglomerate native copper ore can be ground and concentrated using conventional techniques. Single stage autogenous grinding and rod mill-ball mill grinding required the same amount of energy far the required comminution. Metallurgical results were comparable for both types of grinding investigated.

In developing a method to evaluate plant operating data and results from his grindability test, Fred Bond developed the ""Third Theory of Comminution."" "Continuous control of the final grinding product size is important to optimize gold liberation for Gold Milling operations. At Meadowbank Mine an on-line Particle Size Monitor has been employed successfully to achieve the targeted final grind which leads to optimizing the gold recovery at maximum grinding circuit throughput. The live monitoring of the final product particle size leads to a maximum grinding circuit throughput every minute during the process. This paper discusses the optimal utilization of the Particle Size Monitor to assist the Mill operator to maximize the grinding circuit throughput as the milling conditions change due to variable ore processed at Meadowbank Mine. Also the paper includes the usage of the Particle Size Monitor to guarantee the final grind target at each instant of the process.IntroductionAgnico-Eagle is a Canadian-based company that Trades on the TSX & NYSE (AEM). It owns eight mines (8) operating in Nunavut, Quebec, Finland and Mexico and has more than 7,500 employees (Figure 1). 1.6 M ounces of gold were produced in 2015 and the annual average annual production from 2016 to 2018 is forecast to be approximately 1.53 million ounces of gold.The Meadowbank Mine is located in Nunavut, Canada (Figure 2). The mine opened in 2010 and from 2010 to 2014 a total of 1.8M oz of gold was produced. The milling rate is 4.2 Mt per year with an average mill throughput of 11,900 tpd or 496 tph. Average annual gold production over life of mine is expected to be 450,000 ounces. Meadowbank has 775 employees, of which 265 are Inuit or 36% of the total workforce. Estimated life of mine is 2010 to 2018. Gold production in 2015 was 381,804 oz. Meadowbank was Agnico-Eagle’s largest Gold producer in 2015."

"The comminution circuit at Barrick Cortez Gold Mine uses an open circuit primary jaw crusher followed by a standard SABC grinding circuit. The grinding circuit incorporates a 26’Ø x 11’ SAG mill, an Omnicone 1560 pebble crusher and a 16’Ø x 28½’ ball mill. Both mills are driven by 4500 HP motors.In 2007, several comminution circuit studies were performed to assess circuit performance and map a course for improvement. This paper discusses the results of those studies including an analysis of mine-to-mill opportunities, grinding work index efficiency, and ball mill functional performance. Subsequently, improvements to the circuit were made to enhance operating efficiency. Specifically, improvements to the pebble crusher liner configuration, advanced process control system (expert system) and ball mill classification and ball charge are discussed. In addition, other current and future improvement opportunities are discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe Barrick Cortez property is expanding to include the new Cortez Hills open pit and underground mines. Ore from these new mines will be processed in the existing Pipeline mill facility. In conjunction with ore characterization work, performance of the comminution circuit needed to be quantified. Thus, in 2007, the comminution circuit was surveyed and opportunities for improvement identified.Figure 1 below shows the Pipeline mill flowsheet. It is a standard SABC grinding circuit using an open circuit primary jaw crusher followed by a 26’Ø x 11’ (7.92m Ø x 3.35m) SAG mill, in closed circuit with a Omnicone 1,560 pebble crusher, and a 16’Ø x 28½’ (4.88m Ø x 8.69m) ball mill. Both mills are driven by 4,500 HP (3,357 kW) motors. The SAG discharge screen aperture is 5/16” (8 mm) x 1-1/16” (27 mm) slots. Ball mill circuit classification is done with Krebs D20B cyclones."

Automation of the conventional grinding circuits of Palabora Mining Company (PMC) required that adequate instrumentation and a control system had to be put in place, after which extensive testing had to be done to evaluate different grinding control strategies. The objective was either to optimize the particle size from the grinding circuit, or to increase milling circuit throughput while maintaining particle size at existing levels. Prior to automation of the process as described below the circuits were controlled manually. No on-line information on cyclone feed densities, cyclone feed flow or cyclone overflow particle size was available. This type of control relied heavily on interpretation of the process parameters by the operator and on his ability to make informed decisions on what the set points should be. An integral component of the automation process was the installation of a SCADA package (SysCad SDX) for implementing the on-line control strategy. A self-correcting model for prediction of cyclone particle size was developed and implemented on the SDX. The model is calibrated using values from the particle size analysers while they are operational. If the particle size analysers choke or fail for any reason, the model continues to provide a good estimate of the particle size. This technique ensures that a continuous particle size indication is available compared to the intermittent reading from the instrument. The continuous signal allows particle size to be used as a process variable for control purposes. A strategy was developed and implemented which allows for the production of a controlled grind size from the conventional milling circuit to the flotation circuit. The grinding control strategy allows for the control of particle size from the individual cyclone overflows. This strategy allows the operator of the process to increase or decrease production rate by specifying a coarser or finer grind size required for flotation.

The Afton property is located 180 air miles East-Northeast of Vancouver and nine miles West of Kamloops, a city of 60,000 people, in South Central British Columbia, Canada. The mine is adjacent to the Trans-Canada Highway at an elevation of 2,200 feet above sea level. The orebody is a porphyry, copper deposit that has undergone supergene alteration. The-major economic minerals in the supergene zone are native copper and chalcocite with chalcopyrite and bornite in the hypergene areas. The grade is one percent with an overall copper distribution: 70% native, 25% chalcocite and 5% chalcopyrite with bornite and covellite. The ore also contains important, but variable amounts of gold and silver.

"Brunswick Mining has investigated grinding media optimization for the purpose of improving the flotation feed and regrind product size distributions to enhance metal recoveries. This paper presents the findings of on-going testing of various sizes and shapes of grinding media. Plant observations combined with estimated breakage rates demonstrate the importance of appropriate selection of media sizes on the milling operation.IntroductionBrunswick Mining and Smelting is located near Bathurst, New Brunswick, and operates one of the world's largest lead and zinc mines. The ore mineralogy and processing flowsheet have been described elsewhere (Petruk and Schnarr, 1981; Shannon et 01., 1993). Despite the 25 years' milling experience, there has been considerable disagreement as to the required grind size (Grant et 01., 1991). Since 1964, fineness of the flotation feed ranged from 60% to 80% passing 400 mesh (37 um) and averaged slightly above 71% in 1992. Results from mineralogical analysis (Petruk and Schnarr, 1981), laboratory and pilot plant experiments, as well as plant sampling (Grant et al., 1991; Hendriks and Ounpuu, 1985; Shannon et al., 1993) indicate that improved metal recoveries can be achieved by an increase in the fineness of grind, and more specifically by maximizing the amount of material in the 15 urn to 25 um range.This paper shows the results obtained so far from the evaluation of the effect of grinding media size and shape on grinding mill efficiency. The problem of finding optimum grinding media size, shape and composition has been recogrtized since the early 19405. The main criterion for the selection of media size is the size of the material to be ground (Bond, 1958). Although several relationships have been proposed to assist in the selection of grinding media size, none of them are entirely satisfactory (Wills, 1988). Other approaches using the breakage rates and process simulators were developed to help in the selection of grinding media size (Austin et al., 1976; Lo and Herbst, 1986; Concha et 01., 1992; Samskog et al., 1990; Martinovic et al., 1990). Although considerable effort was put into the analysis of grinding media size, very little information is available on the effect of grinding media shape (Norman and Decker, 1985, p. 3C-4). Norris (1952), Kelsall et al. (1973) and Herbst and Lo (1989) have shown that balls are more efficient than other shapes of grinding media including truncated cones and cubes."

The current global economic climate has adversely affected the resources industry in general. For the gold mining industry, even though the gold price has been stable as compared to other resources, there is still a need to cut costs even further in order to be profitable and sustainable. Of all the costs that are associated with mining, comminution of ore accounts for the majority. Comminution costs constitute mainly electricity, grinding balls and liners. Of these three components, grinding balls form the major portion of the consumable costs, and can be as high as 40%?45% of the total. As a result, proper grinding ball selection is a key consideration towards reducing mining costs. This paper discusses quality control procedures that can be conducted in order to select the best grinding balls for a particular application. The Albany Research Center (ARC) conducted studies of mechanical activation by conventional and ultra-fine grinding techniques to enhance olivine reactivity in mineral carbonation reactions. Activated olivine is one of several solid feed materials used at ARC in reactions with carbon dioxide to form carbonate minerals. This paper compares grinding techniques via energy demand data and product characteristics, including particle size distributions, surface areas, full width at half maximum (FWHM) XRD analyses, and particle morphology by SEM analyses. Reactivity was gauged by percent conversion to carbonate in subsequent carbonation tests.

The economic advantages of large diameter ball mills can be compromised by unexpected capacity limiting conditions. These arise because media rotational flow to ore axial flow ratios, and the number of mill revolutions that ore is subjected to during residence, are both inversely proportional to mill diameter. Because of this, mixing efficiency and grinding kinetics may decrease and become capacity limiting when mill diameters reach a critical range. There are two possible scale-up problems involved in the design and use of mineral processing machinery: • Selecting the size and operating conditions for available larger equipment, to insure that operating results will match those obtained with smaller units; or •Extending the size ranges of equipment beyond existing limits. Previous research at Columbia University into flotation machine hydrodynamics has demonstrated the importance in scale-up of internal flow relationships; these perform a similar role in grinding (Arbiter and Harris, 1980).

"There is a number of comminution tests commonly used in the mining industry. Many of the tests are used for a particular grinding model or mill sizing program and are incompatible with other tests of different models. This paper provides an overview of the commonly used grinding and crushing tests, which models (or practitioners) use a particular combination of tests and draws some relationships between the incompatible tests based on the DJB Consultants Inc. database of projects.Case studies will demonstrate similarities and differences between major mining districts with some comments about homogeneous and heterogeneous behaviour within the grindability results.INTRODUCTIONThere are a number of bench-scale grindability tests in use for sizing and predicting throughput for grinding circuits. Ground behaviour in the vicinity of a roadway has been investigated using a physical model and in situ tests during a roof fall. It was discovered that behaviour of the ground is governed by irreversible displacements of adjacent rock clusters. The cluster is a short-living sector of a rock mass that moves as a solid body. For the lack of degree of freedom, the rock mass must be divided into clusters that are forced to move one after another in space and in time. These clusters permanently rearrange and reform during irreversible (inelastic) ground deformation. The crowded clusters have to yield to each other and alter their velocity and direction of movement to accommodate their motion into the excavation. Such behaviour involves uneven and irregular vertical deflection and the movement of adjacent rock blocks in the roof, sides and floor of an opening. Such movement destroys the symmetry of horizontal displacements with respect to the centre line of the opening. A set of indicators that a roof fall is imminent has been identified. Horizontal displacements and dilation must be controlled in order to maintain the stability of an underground opening. Such a state retains the self-supporting effect of the roof and contributes to rock bolts bearing capacity.

On March 12, 1994, the 1,100-foot deep 2 Yard South panel of the 1l0 year-old Retsof Mine collapsed. At the time of this occurrence, the Retsof Mine was characterized as the world's largest, most productive salt mine. The collapse produced a seismic event and resulted in a sinkhole and small lake forming on the surface. An existing highway bridge was rendered unusable. Water entered the mine and despite valiant efforts by the miners and the mining company, the entire mine was flooded and lost. John T. Boyd Company (BOYD) studied the incident to evaluate design procedures, and assess the short- and long-term environmental impacts of the collapse. This paper presents our analysis of the cause of the collapse and our review of the rock mechanics design of 2 Yard South panel. Our review is, in part, based on a rock mechanics monitoring program of 2 Yard South. The monitoring program was established by the mining company as the panel was developed and continued even after the panel became unstable.

Leinster Nickel Operations, located in Western Australia, consists of an underground and three open pit mines in relatively adverse ground conditions. This paper reviews our ground control practices in the open pits, covering aspects of ground support, wall control and monitoring. These methods have been effective in allowing mining operations to continue beneath unstable slopes. In particular, the use of Ground probe?s slope stability radar has enabled the Harmony open pit to safely operate for months following indication of failure from traditional methods. This case study highlights the benefits of investing in appropriate slope stability monitoring systems.

The El Boleo Copper Project is currently in the final design stages for development of a 3-MM-tonne/yr underground copper mine located in Baja California, Mexico. The nearly horizontal mineralized zones are amenable to exploitation by conventional mechanized coal mining technology using continuous miners, shuttle cars, and belt haulage. The mine design resembles a typical full-extraction coal mining operation utilizing a sequence of mains, sub-mains and production panels. Due to numerous faults, mining will be conducted as several small adjacent mines accessed through adits from large arroyos cutting through the mine area. Up to four seams may be mined in some areas with a maximum overburden depth of about 250 m. The ore zone is relatively weak and plastic, subject to extensive creep over time. The mine workings will pass through areas of historical shortwall mining panels where the ground has flowed into old entries and gob areas, and then reconsolidated. A small test mine was developed to evaluate mechanical cutting performance, roof-bolt anchorage capacities, roof and pillar stability and caving behavior. In-mine measurements were combined with two- and three-dimensional FLAC models to evaluate alternative development and production pillar designs. The paper will discuss the various factors influencing ground stability at the El Boleo project and the strategies employed in developing a suitable ground control design.

Highwall mining is an important surface coal mining method, and it may account for approximately 4% of total U.S. coal production. Highwall stability is the major ground control related safety concern. Ground control plans for highwall mining should specify hole width, web pillar width, barrier pillar width and number of holes between barriers. This paper offers simple design charts for these parameters aimed at providing “ball park” checks. Web pillars containing pre-existing auger holes are analyzed and a design chart for estimating their minimum width is also presented. Finally, close proximity multiple seam highwall mining, which may have caused several serious highwall failures, is analyzed. Web and barrier pillar recommendations for this special situation are presented.

There is more than a century of experience in multiple seam mining in Germany. In several mines up to 20 seams had been excavated within the last decades. Due to the nature of the deposit and the history of technical development the older panels cause a complex stress distribution for the lower seams and the current longwalls in descending order of mining. The depth of the longwalls reaches up to 4000 ft. This causes a maximum vertical stress that reaches between 30 and appr. 60 MPa. To handle these conditions several support systems are applied for roadway heading. A central knowledge management system for ground control is used for design and dimensioning of support within the DSK. This paper gives an overview to the nature of German multiple seam mining and the solutions in matters of panel layout and support design. It describes the full lifecycle for roadways in the seam starting with the geological and geotechnical evaluation, the basics of roadway deformation in great depth, the development of planning tools and standards for German coal mines, the range of alternative of support systems and roadheading techniques, as well as the reinforcement measures and the processing of support at the T-junction of the face entry. This paper uses exemplary descriptions that are consolidated in a specialized reference book ?Gebirgsbeherrschung von Flözstrecken? ? ?Ground Control in Roadways? which summarizes the standards of ground control based on the development of the past 25 years in German coal mines.
