Tunneling in carbonate sedimentary rocks such as lime stones and dolomites can be difficult when solution channels or voids are anticipated. Addressing the risk aspects associated with these formations can be done effectively through the Geotechnical Baseline Report (GBR) by properly characterizing the ground and ensuring that the Owner?s and the Contractor?s interests are represented and protected. This paper presents a review of tunneling difficulties in these rocks and includes a review of site investigations, geologic characterization, and presentation in the GBR. Key construction issues are also discussed, including appropriate excavation technology, mechanisms of face support and groundwater control, and quantifying grout takes.

One of the chief drawbacks to Bendigo mining always has been the difficulty of draining the mines in an equitable manner, so that each company or mine owner bears the properly share. The trouble seems to have been apparent on this field since the diggings were discovered. One mine would push on more expeditiously than its neighbour in looking for the precious metal and sink its shaft, whilst those in the vicinity would simply potter about, and discontinue sinking until gold was struck in the deeper ground, and: then they would go ahead, start sinking, while the pioneer would have to pump all or most of their water. This sort of thing continued here for years until the leases were worked down to the very deep ground and the water became such a b.urden on those companies that had deep shafts, that first one stopped hauiing and then others; with the result that over 1000 feet of water was allowed to accumulate on the New Chum line. lt appeared that if something were not done the whole of the main line of reef in the Bendigo district would be at a standstill, when a scheme was formulated and handed to Mr. Lansell, who, with other gentlemen, took the matter up, and at the present time all the mines on that particular portion of reef are in full work and the water all bailed out.lt is this scheme that I am requested to place before you and also to give you the details of the work done since its adoption.

Mining companies are challenged with increased difficulty in delivering capital projects on schedule and within budget. In 2005, PricewaterhouseCoopers global review of major capital projects in the mining industry only 2.5% of projects could be defined as successful when assessed across the four critical dimensions of scope, cost, schedule and business benefits. Thus 97.5% of major mining capital projects were not successful according to the criteria PricewaterhouseCoopers used. Normally if a project fails on all these criteria it indicates scope creep. Scope creep refers to the change in a project's scope after the project work has started. As a result, the projects drift away from their original design, timeline, and budget, and as a consequence destroy business benefits. The major reasons for scope creep are poor change control and the lack of proper front end loading. Change control and front end loading are based on project processes in the planning and monitoring & control process group of the Project Management Body of Knowledge1 (PMBOK). This paper will focus on key factors to consider during project scheduling/planning with special reference to cost and schedule (using Microsoft Project as a tool although the principal is universal)

About 15 per cent of total electricity (400 MkW) was generated by nuclear power plants in the world (2009) and about 36 000 tons of uranium has been mined in uranium mines annually. Radioactive waste material is produced from uranium mines and nuclear power plants. The wastes must be disposed or stored safely for long-term. If they leak and/or move from disposal or storage sites due to air/groundwater flow, then a serious environmental pollution can occur. Hence, multi-layer system has been proposed and employed in order to seal off these radioactive waste materials from biosphere. Basically, bentonite is now used for establishing absorbing and sealing layers in this system. However, the amount of high quality betonite is very limited and in some cases it is hard to be obtained.On the other hand, a great deal of refuse from coal burning plants is produced every year and the amount of it is expected to be higher each year, especially in developing countries. More than half of flyash is utilised and the remaining is disposed at the disposal sites. However, the life of the disposal site is limited and it is diff cult to find a new disposal site. It is requested that the percentage of the utilisation of the flyash be increased in every field.From the above two points of view, a flyash-based barrier layer/cover system is considered in this research and this paper discusses the applicability of flyash as a content of barrier layer/cover material based on the results of a series of laboratory tests.

Risk factors associated with the development of muscu­loskeletal discomfort and disorders during the operation of heavy mobile equipment include whole-body vibration and awkward and sustained joint postures of the shoulders, neck, and trunk. Cab design may influence awkward postures of the joints, and task duration may influence duration of exposure to awkward and static postures and whole-body vibration. To reduce exposure to risk factors related to the interface between cab design and task, it may be necessary for manufacturers to address cab design. This study assessed the repeatability of a cab design checklist developed to evaluate various design characteristics that can influence exposure to risk factors for musculoskeletal discomfort. The ability of the cab design checklist to identify posture-related deficiencies of design was also assessed. The checklist was used by two administrators across 10 pieces of heavy construction equipment. Video analysis was performed to quantify postures of the neck, shoulder, and trunk; correlation analysis was used to determine whether specific questions from the checklist were associated with the identification of awkward postures. The repeatability assessment resulted in kappa coefficients ranging from 0.52 to 1.0 (good-to-excellent reproducibility) across each piece of equipment, and an overall kappa coefficient of 0.77 (excellent reproducibility) when considering all equipment together. Results from the correlation analysis showed that shoulder flexion posture was correlated with scores from the cab design checklist. However, results of the cab design checklist were not significantly correlated with shoulder abduction or awkward postures of the neck and trunk. Results suggest that the cab design checklist may be useful for identifying cab design characteristics that need further improvement and for identifying design characteristics that increase shoulder flexion. The strength of the repeatability assessment suggests that outcomes of the cab design checklist administered by different individuals may be consistent, independent of the type of equipment being assessed.

Augered cast-in-place piles are one of the most cost effective deep foundation options available to designers but have been largely underutilized due to skepticism associated with quality assurance and hence capacity. When installed correctly, unit friction values can rival any other competing foundation system. To this end, many means have been implemented to increase confidence in the competence of the foundation. One such method is load testing via the Statnamic test method. This paper presents an overview of the Statnamic test method, advantages and disadvantages of its use, and several case studies where Statnamic testing of augered cast-in-place piles confirmed quality construction, brought about design changes, or proof tested problematic installations.

The understanding of public debates over mineral exploration and mining largely originates from exceptional situations such as mining accidents of conflicts. Less is known about how mining is portrayed and understood under more conventional settings. What storylines dominate the local day-to-day public debate? This article presents results from a comparative case study focusing on newspaper coverage of mineral exploration and mining in three European countries representing different geological and socio-economic contexts. Newspaper articles from the Geyer-Erzgebirge region in Germany, the Andalusia region in Spain, and Northern Finland are studied. The sample looks into the period between September 2018 and February 2020 and shows that regional newspapers report about mining issues relatively intensively even in the absence of major accidents or other media events causing peaks of attention. The tone of the articles is generally neutral to positive towards mining activities, reflecting the specific local settings, historical experiences, and future expectations. Despite the different contexts of the three countries, there were considerable similarities to the topics highlighted, including common themes of mining revival, mining events and social interaction, history of mining, and damages related to mining. Past, present, and future employment opportunities related directly or indirectly to the mining sector are key storylines. Another recurrent underlying theme is the need to balance environment and safety risks and socio-economic prosperity, typically covered through ordinary disputes among the mining sector, public authorities, regional non-governmental organizations, and local initiatives.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B Tech (Engineering Metallurgy) degree This investigation relates to a multi-purpose electrolytic system. Its primary purpose is to electrowin gold from high or low concentration gold cyanide solutions and/or from gold sludge, and to convert the recovered gold into a gold (alloy) electroform or electrode at the gold mine itself. These operations are carried out sequentially and in situ in the same electrolytic cell. Electrorefining of the gold recovered may also be done in the cell. The system applies to silver as well, and may be adaptable to base and platinum group metals. It could also be used in environmental applications, to remove undesirable metals present in aqueous solution at very low concentration. The work to be discussed forms part of recently filed patent applications. Subsequent and future developments of the system are briefly outlined. Reduction interactions in solid phases are widespread and occur in most complex metallurgical processes. Among these processes, reactions between oxides and carbon have a special importance. The authors conducted experiments for comparison of reduction by different reducing agents of impregnated chromite ores, in which grains of the reducible chromite spinel are isolated from direct contact with the reducing agent by layers of non-ore material. The results of the experiments have revealed that the beginning of reduction is preceded by thermal and impurity order-disorder transformation of the oxide lattice whilst the transformation of the oxide lattice into the metal lattice takes place as a result of removal of oxygen anions from the zone of metal germ nucleation. Since anions are charge carriers, increase of their mobility can be monitored by changes in electrical conductivity of oxides. Respective measurements of electrical resistance of ores of different metals and a number of pure refractory oxides under heating have indicated that the beginning of reduction coincides with the time of drastic (tens of thousands times) increase of conductivity of the oxides. Besides, the temperature of the beginning of carbon-thermal reduction is in line with the Tammann temperature, i.e. the temperature of transition from the predominantly surface diffusion to volume diffusion. Segregation of metals from the oxide lattice occurs as a result of merging of anion vacancies with defect electrons on defects of the oxide lattice. The transformation of the oxide lattice into the metal lattice requires a certain concentration of anion vacancies and inflow of electrons from the reducing agent to the site of metal segregation. Such inflow has no difficulties due to the mixed anion-electron nature of high-temperature conductivity of oxides. Thus, the reduction is not determined by oxygen diffusion, it is determined by oxygen vacancies diffusion whose speed exceeds the speed of oxygen diffusion by orders of magnitude. This determines that the kinetics of reduction considerably exceeds the kinetics of oxidation at similar temperatures since oxidation proceeds by means of mass transfer of oxygen through the layer of the generated oxide.

By direct aging treated, creep properties measurement and microstructure observation, the influences of the direct aging treatment on the creep behaviors of Hot Continuous Rolled GH4169 superalloy are investigated. Results show that the creep resistance of Hot Continuous Rolled GH4169 superalloy may be obviously improved by directly aged treatment. Under the applied stress of 700MPa at 660, the creep lifetime of the alloy is enhanced to 126h from 60h. During hot continuous rolling, the deformation features of the alloy are the twinning and the double orientations slipping of the dislocation activated within the twinning regions. After direct aging treated, the alloy displays a smaller grain size, and the finer g² phase is dispersedly precipitated in the matrix of the alloy, which is thought to be a main reason of enhancing creep lifetime of the alloy.

In recent years the Federal Bureau of Mines tested and approved four new types of self-contained breathing apparatus and a facepiece designed for use with the McCaa 2-hour self-contained oxygen breathing apparatus. The Bureau also developed and perfected a battery-powered lifeline telephone for use in mine rescue and recovery operations. Some of this equipment is described in Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7413.4/ This publication is a revision of information Circular 7413 and presents pertinent information on more recently developed mine rescue equipment. The breathing apparatus described herein are 1/2- and 3/4-hour sell-contained types of much simpler design than the conventional 2-hour self-contained oxygen breathing apparatus ordinarily used by mine rescue crews; however, it is just as important to select rescue crews carefully and to train them properly in the use, care, and limitations of the newer types of apparatus as well as the older, established types, if the newer types are to be used safely. The Bureau of Mines recommends that 1/2- and 3/4-hour self-contained breathing apparatus be used only as auxiliary equipment in mine rescue and recovery work and that the capabilities and limitations of the apparatus should be well understood by those who wear the equipment.

Foster-Miller Associates has developed a set of guidelines to permit hoist manufacturers, mine owners, and MESA mine inspectors to design, purchase, install or inspect a safe and effective Emergency Escape Hoist, as required by the Coal Mine Health and Safety act of 1969. A series of surveys were carried out to determine: 1. The attitudes and local needs of the MESA District Managers. 2. Current escape hoist installations. 3. Equipment available for future designs. 4. Foreign methods and equipment for mine rescue. From these survey studies, preliminary guideline objectives were developed.

Machine-related injuries are one of the major safety concerns in underground coal mines. Severe injuries and fatalities occur when a miner is struck, crushed, or pinned by mining equipment such as a continuous mining machine (CMM), shuttle car, or a scoop. Proximity detection systems (PDSs) have been applied in mining to reduce these types of injuries and fatalities. All of the PDSs that are currently approved by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) for use in underground coal mines are magnetic-field based and could be affected by metallic objects such as trailing cables. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) investigated the influence of trailing cables on the performance of PDSs. In particular, the magnetic field coupled from proximity system generators to a de-energized trailing cable was characterized. The results show that significant energy can be coupled from the proximity system generators to a trailing cable when there is a closed loop in the cable. The effect on PDS performance from the magnetic field radiated around an energized trailing cable was also quantified for different current amplitudes in the cable. It is shown that the magnetic field caused by the electric current in the trailing cable mainly consists of a 60-Hz signal and its harmonics which causes little interference to the PDS. The results presented in this paper can help PDS manufacturers to design better systems that are more immune to these effects.

The Heavy Media Separation plant operated at Lidsdale siding, eight miles from Lithgow, by the N.S.W. Mining Co. is a product of the Western Machinery Company, of D.S.A.This mill, designed to use finely ground magnetite as the heavy medium, was prefabricated in America and shipped to Australia for erection.First operated early in December, 1951 it has worked on a two-shift basis since. Designed for an input rate of 330 tons per hour, this mill is capable of washing 4 in. x /u in. coal down to its inherent ash by removing all heavy material, including high-ash coal.The principle is quite simple. A stream of raw coal is fed into the separatory vessel which contains a liquid medium, the density of which is adjusted to produce the desired split between coal and refuse. In this bath the lightest coal floats, and all material heavier than the specific gravity of the medium sinks, and is removed separately. Such a system is,. ideally suited to Western coal, as there is no definite splitting point between coal and refuse. Inherent ash of the coal fed to the plant ranges from 8 to 25%, the corresponding density range being from 1.28 up to 1.8.Generally speaking, the higher the density the higher the ash content of the coal.The density in the separatory vessel (hereafter called the cone) can be quickly and easily adjusted throughout the above range to any desired value. This paper describes the implementation aspect of a blast hole kriging system which has been developed for the purpose of daily ore-waste control in an open pit mine. The primary goal of blast hole kriging is to improve the ore-waste delineation procedure. A complete computer program package called Blast Hole Kriging (BHK) System was developed for IBM/PC AT or XT computer, using Fortran language and supplemented by a few Assembly language routines for bit-map manipulation. The emphasis of this paper is on the implementation aspect of the developed system. For this reason, the requirements for practical implementation and the system design considerations are discussed in the paper, as well as the main features of the University of Arizona's BHK System.

A new test coke oven of 7 cu. ft. capacity is described. The oven was designed to simulate conditions in a central section of a battery oven and a special feature is the achievement of unidirectional heating from theflues on either side of the charge.The method of charging permits close control of charge conditions such as bulk density and moisture content.These conditions, as well as coking conditions (e.g. flue temperatures and coking time) must be varied to simulate conditions in different batteries. The effects of several variables on coke quality are discussed.Using test oven conditions corresponding to those of Newcastle steelworks batteries, good agreement was obtained between strength indices of test oven and battery cokes. For 17 tests, the average ASTM stability and hardness indices for the test oven coke were 38· 5 per cent and 69·7 per cent, while those for the battery coke were 37· 4 per cent and 67·6 per cent.Observed relationships between coke yield and productivity, and volatile matter and charge moisture are given.The use of a test oven to classify test coals into prime-, medium-, poor-, and non-coking coals is discussed.This may be achieved by observing the effects of the test coal in blends with other coals. The results of a series of blending tests are presented.The dangers of attempting to predict coke quality from a single coal property are pointed out, since this can be done only for very restricted ranges of coals.A diagram is given showing the established trends in the effects of blending various types of Australian coals on coke strength.

The 22d annual survey of the packaged-fuel industry by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, revealed that 26 plants in 8 States were in operation and reported production in 1956. The demand for packaged fuel in the United States has declined gradually since the end of World War II, and the number of operating plants has decreased from 70 in 1946 to 26 in 1956. Annual productive capacity of the industry has decreased also during this period, and the decrease in capacity was about proportional to the decrease in operating plants. Packaged-fuel plants are relatively small, and 85 percent of the active plants in 1956 had an annual capacity of less than 10,000 tons. The same situation prevailed in 1946, when 84 percent of the plants had a capacity of less than 10,000 tons. Total capacity for the 26 active plants in 1956 was 174,600 tons, an average of 6,715 tons per plant. Operating rates in 1956 were the highest since 1951, and the rate of production for the industry averaged 37 percent of capacity.

This study involved a review of bonding and bond release practices in the states of the Eastern and Midwestern Coal Provinces. Data was collected from regulatory authorities and site visits to document the bonding and release procedures in the states related to achieving successful reclamation. The regulations related to PL95-87 were reviewed. The analysis included suggested modified or new bond release criteria, a review of applicable bond release inspection techniques was prepared, a conceptual graduated bonding system and incentive procedures for reclamation of surface mine sites to alternative or higher land uses. A number of conclusions and recommendations for further research were included. A detailed bibliography and a glossary are included in the report.

This report3/ gives the results of a reconnaissance of mining districts in Eureka County, Nevada, made from September 25 to October 20 and from October 27 to November 5, 1577. During this time, virtually all the districts were visited and many data obtained on active and inactive properties. This report covers the locations of the various districts, geological background, ownership and brief descriptions of mines and prospects, information on past and current operations, and, other data likely to be useful to those interested in the development of our mineral resources. From the viewpoint of past production in the county, the silver-lead-gold deposits at Eureka have been tie most important, followed by the silver deposits at Cortez and Mineral Hill. The period of greatest activity in the foregoing districts was from 1870 to 1990, when Eureka was one of the principal mining areas in Nevada; the production of lead was sufficient to affect its price in all the commercial centers of the world. Eureka also merits the distinction of being the birthplace of the silver-lead smelting industry in the United States.
