The minerals that enter welding-rod coatings and fluxes are the main subject of this report. Few mineral producers know just what minerals and what grades and quantities of minerals are required by the welding trade, and it is for their information that this report has been prepared. The various methods of welding are discussed extensively enough to inform this type of audience. Specialists in welding probably will find little on welding that is of value to them, but they may learn something more about the minerals or mineral products that they use. The authors did not find it easy to prepare this publication, and any needed corrections will be welcomed. Regarding welding, research, Jenks4/ 1 points out that while the process of welding in simple in operation, the phenomena attending its use are extremely complicated, and the efficient and safe use of welding requires an understanding thereof. Although the fluxes and the coatings used have solved many problems, many other problems require the joint effort of the whole industry; therefore, it is hoped that this report will be found of practical value.

This is one of a series of instruction guides developed to help instructors present health and safety training courses to workers in the coal mining industry. This course is intended for training those, usually the safety officers, who perform surveys fur inhalation contaminants in above ground work areas. The handbook entitled ?Handbook for Surveys of Inhalation Contaminants in Above Ground Coal Mining and Processing Work Areas? (NTIS #PB-243-35";) is used as a manual for the course and as a prime reference when performing the actual surveys or interpreting the sampling results. There are six experiments for the students to perform during the course to familiarize them with the sampling devices routinely used during the surveys.

"Secant bored pile walls are frequently used as retaining walls in watertight excavations to cut off ground water aquifers and are subsequently exposed to ground water pressure loading in addition to earth pressure loads. To avoid extra loading from ground water pressure in soils with limited permeability, it can be useful to arrange drainage windows within secant bored pile walls by means of single primary piles filled with porous concrete without reinforcement cages, which usually have to be placed within casings in submerged conditions. This concrete may serve as a horizontal arch between the reinforced secondary piles, but it must however enable vertical draining between load carrying construction beams and the bottom of the excavated pit. In the present submission, the results of several material tests with different mix designs of porous concrete with certain admixtures are presented together with first and important experiences with a wellsuited placement technique for porous concrete casings in small- and large-scale laboratory tests. It can be shown that the usual placement technique of employing a tremie pipe is not suited for this type of unsaturated concrete. Instead, pouring with a particular kind of cone and an open conductor pipe has proven successful.Additionally, special testing methods are currently developed for judging the suitability of the desired concrete mix design in preparation for an upcoming real-scale experimental pile installation in Germany.1. INTRODUCTIONRetaining walls are often built as secant bored pile walls in order to cut off aquifers saturated with groundwater against deep building pits. In soil types with relatively low permeability, however, seepage flow may be permitted, because the quantity of groundwater to be pumped is limited, and the range of influence due to dewatering is not reaching far. Thus, the hydrostatic water pressure on the retaining wall can be considerably reduced, leading to a more economic design (see Fig. 1).In unsaturated soils, the dewatering effect can be achieved by means of porous pervious concrete with a uniform grainsize distribution of aggregates typically placed in a borehole under dry conditions. With regard to the use of porous concrete to be placed at the ground surface in road pavement applications, experience is sufficiently available as shown, for instance, by Neithalath et el. (2010). However placing the porous concrete in a bored pile using a tremie pipe under submerged conditions is a challenge and a completely new approach, because there is a considerable risk of segregation of the fresh concrete, separating the cement lime paste from the aggregates when in contact with water and leaving only neat gravel on the one hand as well as a tight cemented area at the bottom of the pile on the other hand. If this concrete placement is successful, additional dewatering by means of extra wells behind the retaining wall can be avoided. Of course the seepage flow in the adjacent soil needs to be regarded seriously."

The Kiruna Mine in Sweden currently has three ventilation systems. The first two (a new and old system) serve the production areas. The third system is used for the facilities on the former main haulage level 775. That area includes offices and workshops for load haul dumpers (LHD) and drill rigs. The third ventilation system also covers the crushing and haulage on level 1045. At the present time, the total airflow for the mine is 1,600 m3/sec(3.4 million cfm). The current system serves the levels above the 775 level. The new one is for the levels between 775 and 1,085 m (2,540 and 3,560 ft), which are needed for the new ore body. When all of the production is below level 775, the old ventilation system will be closed down.

Fe-Ni alloys can be used as raw material in making stainless steel. Laterite nickel ore is one of mineral resources for producing nickel alloys. In this work, the laterite ore after dehydration at 800 °C and the anthracite as reducing agent were mixed for pre-reduction at 900 °C, and then reduced to form Fe-Ni alloys at 1550-1620 °C through carbon-thermal reduction process. A high Ni-content alloy component in the metallurgical mixture can be formed through pre-reduction. Better separation of the resulting metals from the slag is found with lower Ni-content alloys produced or higher temperatures during reduction. An effective processing of Fe-Ni alloys needs further understanding of the process fundamentals and optimizing of the process parameters.

Thermal stress relief by means of a typical heat treatment cycle (660oC for one hr) is compared with the one achieved through vibratory stress relief at resonant and multiple resonant frequencies for the D-406 HSLA material. Our analysis of the data is based on the microhardness profiles measured for the entire length of scales, namely, base metal, heat affected zone (HAZ) and the weld bead itself. The profiles obtained using the two techniques mimic each other, for an equivalent 70% stress relief level. The data are further qualified by impact testing wherein the zone of interest is projected in the retention groove to provide impact by the pendulum striker in the Charpy mode. Higher equivalent energy absorption in the treated specimens confirms the efficacy of the vibratory method. The present work rectifies earlier anomaly where heat treatment has been reported at 310oC for the same material.

A case study from a current Ausenco project is presented to demonstrate the importance of maintaining high carbon activity to illustrate the driving force for plant improvements such as a carbon regeneration kiln upgrade.This paper revisits the factors that influence carbon activity for gold loading, with emphasis on deactivation by organic solution components such as flotation reagents.Kiln process design requirements for effective thermal regeneration are reviewed including the interaction of parameters such as temperature, kiln atmosphere and residence time.The different types of kilns that have been used for carbon reactivation are described. A check list is provided of what to look for when purchasing a carbon reactivation system for dealing with severely fouled carbon. This covers the ancillary equipment as well as the kiln itself.While the effectiveness of the carbon reactivation kiln is vital to maintenance of high carbon activity it needs to be remembered that this is only the end of pipe solution. It is also important to ensure that reagents such as frothers and flotation collectors are appropriately chosen to maximise recovery and at the same time minimise carbon deactivation.CITATION:La Brooy, S R and Claflin, J K, 2013. Keywords: Copper, ion exchange, sulfonic acid, bis-picolylamine, ion exchange modeling, ion exchange kinetics As part of an investigation into the feasibility of using ion exchange resins to recover copper from aqueous waste streams generated during the manufacturing of semiconductor devices, the uptake of copper onto two ion exchange resins was investigated. The resins studied were DOWEX G-26, a standard gel type sulfonic acid resin, and DOWEX M4195, a macroporous chelating resin with a bis-picolylamine functional group. The equilibrium and kinetic behavior of the uptake of copper were investigated over a range of copper concentrations with constant sulfate concentration and different levels of acidity. The homogeneous structure of the G-26 resin yields equilibrium relationships that fit the Langmuir equation, and equilibration times of less than 30 minutes. The uptake behavior of M4195 is complicated by the need to absorb co-ions to maintain electroneutrality, resulting in uptake profiles that change character with increasing copper concentrations, and extended equilibration times.

INTRODUCTION The Bunker Hill mine, located at Kellogg, ID, in the Coeur d'Alene mining district, has been a major pro¬ducer of lead-zinc-silver ore since 1887. Since its dis¬covery, it has produced over 25 401 171 t (28 million st) of ore from 20 to 25 veins and ore zones. The mine now covers an area of approximately 1.609 km (1 mile) in length and 0.8 km (1/2 mile) in width and extends from 1097 m (3600 ft) above sea level to 488 m (1600 ft) below sea level. Production is presently at a rate of 1542 t/d (1700 stpd). During 1965, a new stoping method, the Bunker Hill pillar system, was developed to enable the profitable mining of large, low-grade zinc ore bodies. The system was specifically designed to in¬corporate the Atlas Copco T26GH rubber-tired loaders. High productivities were achieved, and the method was adapted for mining the higher grade stopes where large timber square sets are utilized. This results in nearly 100% extraction. GEOLOGY The area encompassing the Bunker Hill mine lies immediately south of the Osburn fault, a major east-west striking, deep-seated strike slip fault which is the dominant structural feature in the Coeur d'Alene district. The Bunker Hill forms a series of veins and mineralized zones which occur as link structures, tension fractures, and breccia zones in folded, interbedded argillaceous quartzites of the Revett and St. Regis formations of the Precambrian belt series. The Rosco ore body is predominantly a zinc ore body above the Cate fault, which is presently known to occur from the 13 level. [elevation 488 m (1600 ft)] to the 1600 level [elevation 304 m (1000 ft) ]. These ore bodies are stringer zones with at least one dominant 1.8 to 4.5 m (6 to 15 ft) wide band of ore. They dip 0.09 to 0.26 rad (5° to 15°) steeper than the local 0.61 rad (35°) dip of the Cate fault, and also deviate 0.26 to 0.52 rad (15° to 30°) in strike from the Cate. Because of the flat dip and fractured weak hanging wall, normal cut-and-fill mining has not proven practical in this ore body. The mechanized timber methods described in the next section and the Bunker Hill pillar system are the mining methods successfully used. Low-sulphidation epithermal gold deposits, which form in quasi-hydrostatic convective hydrothermal systems, frequently contain chalcedony within high-grade ore, which has been interpreted to be a crystallisation product of amorphous silica. To deposit amorphous silica rather than another silica polymorph at elevated temperatures requires very high silica concentrations, because of its relatively high solubility. Only extreme boiling caused by decompression followed by wall rock heating upon structural dilation, can achieve this. As gold deposits with amorphous silica it must be produced by the same mechanism, particularly since extreme boiling is also a very effective mechanism for gold deposition. Recent developments support this view; the first is the detailed isotopic analysis of chalcedony-bearing high-grade veins reported from Hishikari, Japan, in which oxygen isotope results are indicative of extreme boiling and hydrogen isotopes indicate initial deposition of amorphous silica. The second is the finding of chalcedony within geothermal pipe work in the Rotokawa geothermal field in New Zealand. Rotokawa is a comparatively hot field (335¦C at depth); hence separation of the steam-water mixture produced by the wells is undertaken at a comparatively high temperature (220¦C) to minimise down-stream silica scaling. Even so, silica scale, some of which is chalcedony, does occur, under similar conditions to that in low-sulphidation epithermal deposits. Evidence of chalcedony forming under these conditions, reinforces the interpretation that decompressive boiling is the main deposition mechanism for gold in low-sulphidation epithermal deposits. It is possible that there is sufficient drop in temperature due to decompression that, at least initially, the silica deposits directly as chalcedony. Low-sulphidation epithermal gold deposits that do not contain chalcedony, such as those in the Philippines, may form at temperatures too high for chalcedony to directly form. The recognition of decompressive boiling as the main deposition mechanism in low-sulphidation epithermal deposits means that exploration can focus on zones where this has taken place by combining paleohydrological reconstruction and structural geology.

"An autogenous grinding circuit was commissioned at the Brunswick concentrator in October 1998. The autogenous grinding circuit replaced existing surface crushing plants, fine ore storage, rod and primary ball mills. The 8.54m diameter x 4.27m long (EGL) AN1 mill is driven by a bidirectional variable speed 6.3MW ABB wound rotor motor with Slip Energy Recovery (SER) drive. The AG mill was subsequently converted to SAG operation in May 1999 for a number of reasons. The mill is operated in closed circuit with horizontally inclined 660mm diameter cyclones to produce a circuit product P80 of 85 microns. Extensive test work and JKSimMet design modeling resulted in a production circuit operating closely within design expectations.The circuit is highly instrumented and controlled via a hybrid Programmable Logic Controller (PLC-5) and Fisher PROVOX Distributed Control System (DCS) that is in communication with the property information highway. An expert control system (Gensym G2) is used for control of the SAG mill load.Engineering and construction were completed in 28 months from the time of management approval for the project. The Brunswick AG/SAG mill circuit was commissioned on schedule at the $M 23.5 forecast budget."

In the Summer of 2011, emergency repairs to the Jefferson Memorial North Plaza and Seawall were completed. These repairs were necessitated by settlement and lateral movement of the seawall and North Plaza which prompted the National Park Service (NPS) to initiate an investigation as to the possible causes of the movement, and commission a design for its mitigation. Information gathered from extensive instrumentation on site led to the design of a movement mitigation scheme that included demolition of the Ashlar Seawall and reconstruction of a new seawall. The new seawall foundation is an A-Wall consisting of vertical caissons and battered pipe piles connected to the seawall itself. The scheme provides resistance to future vertical and lateral movement of the North Plaza and the new seawall. Repair to the seawall and plaza began in December 2009, and was completed in August 2011. This paper discusses the mechanisms believed to be responsible for settlement and lateral movement, summarizes the procedure followed for design of the mitigation, and describes the construction methods and some challenges faced during the repair.

This summary of State laws on explosives wag compiled primarily to ascertain what subjects relating to their control have been acted upon by each State legislature and, in general, how they have been treated. It does not Include any legislation passed after 1942, or any proclamations, regulations, or administrative orders. It does not purport or attempt to be authoritative. If any problem arises involving interpretation of the statutes of any particular State, the original source must be consulted for the exact words used by the legislature. This summary, however, will be useful in determining whether relevant statutes exist, and in locating them quickly, with a minimum of effort. It will be of value also in comparing statutes in other States to determine what construction has been placed upon them by the courts of these jurisdictions or to contrast the varying provisions of many States upon a similar subject. To make these comparisons easier, the statutory provisions for each State have been grouped under several major topics in outline form. Although this sometimes has resulted in disruption of the continuity of individual acts, the increased general clarity and availability of comparable sections have more than justified the procedure followed.

"As conventional, base or precious metal ores are being depleted worldwide, the mining industry is being faced with an increasing exploitation of arsenical sulfidic ores. Enargite is a common example. The downstream processing of these ores poses several problems ranging from high smelter penalties to finding economical and environmentally acceptable means of disposing of the arsenic. Several hydrometallurgical processes have been proposed for extracting arsenic from enargite concentrates, notably using alkaline sulphide leaching (ASL). However, few alternatives exist for removing the arsenic from solution and stabilizing it in an approach that is both economical and environmentally acceptable.Dundee Sustainable Technologies (“DST”) has developed a technology for the sequestration of arsenic by vitrification. Originally optimized to cost-effectively stabilize arsenic trioxide (As2O3), DST has shown that vitrification could be successfully extended to the stabilization of other arsenical products, such as calcium arsenate (Ca3(AsO4)2) and sodium arsenate (Na3AsO4). In this paper, the vitrification of arsenic in the context of an enargite leaching was newly explored and demonstrated successfully.Two processing routes are being proposed by DST for the removal of arsenic from enargite concentrates and their stabilization by vitrification. In one route, arsenic is extracted by ASL and is then precipitated under atmospheric conditions and with minimal use of reagents and time. The resulting precipitate is an unstable hydrated ferric arsenate (FeAsO4•2H2O) that is then vitrified in a non-dilutive method, significantly increasing the stability of arsenic and meeting the TCLP guideline. Unlike is required for scorodite, stabilization was successfully achieved without concern for the crystallinity of the precipitate."

"A 2400 acre extension to the existing Tailings Area is under development at Inco's Copper Cliff Milling operations.The new area is being developed in stages as production levels dictate thus minimizing immediate capital expenditures while permitting disposal operations to proceed as further site work progresses.The first stage of the new storage site will be fully operational by early 1987 and will include a 400 acre site specific to the storage of Pyrrhotite rejected from milling circuits. The Pyrrhotite site is located in the centre of the Tailings area and is designed for water cover throughout much of its projected life.The new development incorporates perimeter dams designed to operate with low phreatic levels for maximum structural stability. Acid seepage water is collected behind secondary impermeable dams for return to the Tailings Pond.Tailings are deposited by up-stream methods permitting segregation of coarse fractions for use in future lifts of the perimeter dams."

"In 2007, Noront Resources Inc. discovered the high grade nickel copper PGE deposit in northwestern Ontario in a region now known as the Ring of Fire. Since the initial discovery, Noront has advanced the Eagle¹s Nest Project and in September 2012 released a feasibility study for the development of the Eagle¹s Nest Project. This paper summarizes the results of this recent study and outlines additional work planned in the next stages of project development. INTRODUCTIONThe following paper summarizes the findings of the recently completed feasibility study on Noront Resources Ltd.’s Eagle’s Nest Project. The feasibility study was compiled into a NI 43-101 report by Micon International. This paper is intended to summarize the major technical findings and for complete information, interested parties can find the entire NI 43-101 report at www.norontresources.com or on SEDAR.LOCATIONThe McFaulds Lake project area, which includes the Eagle’s Nest deposit, is located at approximately UTM 5844000 N and 547000 E, and between approximately 52º42’ and 52º50’ N latitude and 86º06’ and 86º24’ W longitude, approximately 250 km west of the community of Attawapiskat on James Bay and 575 km northwest of Timmins. The closest all-season accessible community to the McFaulds Lake project area is Nakina, 300 km to the south, where there is a paved airstrip, in addition to all weather road and railroad access (see Figure 1).The First Nations communities of Webequie and Ogoki/Marten Falls are located 90 km west and 120 km south southeast of McFaulds Lake, respectively. Both communities are served by regularly scheduled air service, primarily from Thunder Bay; both Thunder Bay and Timmins serve as support centres for the James Bay communities and the exploration projects in the area."

"With energy costs increasing and ore grades diminishing, the role of pre-concentration in hard rock mining operations has been gaining greater interest. To maximize energy conservation, the pre-concentration process should be conducted at as coarse a crush size as possible while minimizing losses of pay metals. Dense medium separation (DMS) is a robust process that can be conducted at particle sizes as coarse as 300 mm and as fine as 500 µm with high separation efficiency, depending on liberation characteristics of the value minerals. The DMS process involves three steps: feed preparation, dense medium separation, and ferrous-based media recovery. This paper discusses each of these processing steps, but focus will be given to the dense medium separation stage. Various types of DMS equipment are reviewed. Pilot plant campaign case studies conducted at the SGS Lakefield site are presented, which have included a variety of mineral systems such as spodumene, sulphide-bearing gold ores, and complex sulphide ores. These case studies demonstrate that for amenable ores, mass rejection of 20-60% is possible while maintaining recoveries of greater than 90% in most cases.IntroductionPre-concentration is a process of rejecting mass of gangue while ensuring recovery of valuable minerals prior to more intensive, downstream processing. Pre-concentration has been practiced in industry for many years, and is gaining greater interest as the industry copes with processing lower grade, more difficult ores, typically requiring finer grind sizes and higher energy costs."
