Sulfide-ore concentrates containing cobalt, nickel, copper, lead, and iron from the operations of the National Lead Co. at. Fredericktown, Mo., were treated successfully on a laboratory scale to recover more than 90 percent of the cobalt, nickel, and copper. A cobalt -nickel-bearing, lead-copper matte., produced by the St. Joseph Lead Co. at Herculaneum, Mo., was treated to produce a lead-zinc fume, a copper sulfide concentrate, and a cobalt nickel-iron product, netting a recovery of over 75 percent of the cobalt and about 90 percent of the nickel and copper. National Lead Co. bulk concentrates were chlorinated with gaseous chlorine to form anhydrous metal chlorides and sulfur chlorides, sulfur chlorides were recovered by distillation, a high percentage of the ferric chloride was converted to ferric oxide, and the chlorinated residual metals were extracted with water. Metal ions were removed from leach liquors by pH-controlled fractional precipitation as hydroxides. Cobalt solutions "were prepared from cobaltic hydroxide, and procedures were developed to remove contaminating metal ions. Purified cobalt solutions were employed as electrolytes for deposition of high-purity cobalt.

Electric power curtailments resulting from the coal strike, required Noranda Aluminum, Inc. to shut down its 140,000 ton-per-year (tpy) primary aluminum smelter at New Madrid, Mo., and layoff 308 workers. Other primary aluminum production facilities affected by the coal strike included the Aluminum Company of America plant at Evansville, Ind. which shut down half of one potline; the Eastalco Aluminum Co., smelter at Frederick, Md., which cut production by 7 percent; and the National-Southwire Aluminum Co. plant at Hawesville, Ky. which cut production by 6 percent. Alumax, Inc. announced that construction had started on a 91,000 tpy potline at the Eastalco primary aluminum smelter. The new potline will be owned 65 percent by Alumax and 35 percent by Mitsui & Co. Ltd. Howmet Aluminum Corp., which currently owns 50 percent of the existing 176,000 tpy facility, has the option of becoming a 50 percent owner of the third potline in 1982. Construction of the new line was scheduled to be completed in 1980.

This report reviews the work performed on Task M of Bu-Mines Contract H0220073 to develop an engineering model of a surface and subsurface communications system for normal mine operations and for post disaster rescue operations. The system concept provides for one-way transmission of digital information between a number of identifiable subsurface terminals or subcenters and a single surface station. It also provides 2-way voice communications between the subcenters and the surface station. The basic communications link is electromagnetic signaling through-the-earth, but the system is also capable of using mine phone lines as an alternate link. Engineering models of three subcenters and one surface terminal (see Figure 1-1) have been fabricated in order to demonstrate the system's performance. The system concept, however, permits up to 20 subcenters to be incorporated if desired. Additional subcenters are also feasible for large mines if they can be deployed in the mine to operate on a noninterfering basis.

"Trials of automated technology at underground mine sites around the world have reported increased production and the potential for lower energy consumption. Autonomous mining eliminates a range of delays related to operator downtime and travel to the workface and facilitates continuous operation in conditions that are unsafe for workers. Automation also introduces complexities and safety hazards arising from equipment–personnel interactions; automated processes must be isolated from other stope-cycle–related activities such as production drilling, development, loading, and backfilling, poten¬tially requiring changes to the mine design to maintain an efficient and safe operation. "INTRODUCTION This investigation was undertaken to obtain information concerning the effects of boron in steel and its method of addition, so that boron, which is readily obtainable domestically, may be used to relieve the great demand for those scarce, strategic, alloying elements that hitherto have been considered necessary for the successful manufacture of quality steel.Previous Work Guillet 4/ seems to have been the first to predict that boron-bearing steel might have a possible industrial use when, in 1907, he published results of an investigation into the properties of steel containing 0.21 to 1.51 percent boron.Possibly Walter 2/ was the first to appreciate the fact that extremely small percentages of boron are effective in improving the properties of a steel. His patent, issued in 1924 claimed steels containing boron within the limits of 0.001 to 0.100 percent; furthermore, the specifications disclosed that boron increased the hardenability of steel and refined its grain structure. In 1937, Naton and Piwowarsky 6/ otherwise observed that boron increased the hardenablity of steel."

There are two kinds of problems concerning the elements of a population : the first is to estimate the proportion of some specific kind of element in the population, e.g. the amount of gold in a block of ground (equals population) or the proportion of mercury in a sample; the second is to estimate the length, breadth, volume, etc., of a specific kind of element, e.g. the grain size of quartz grains in a beach sand or the size, shape and arrangement of lenses of ore in an ore deposit. Given a specific objective, a bounded population, identified elements and the element characteristics of interest, it is then necessary to select a sample of the elements from the population and the problem of sampling requires a decision on how to select the sample. It is also necessary to establish, either by heuristic analysis or empirically, based on long experience, the model frequency distribution of the desired element characteristics: in general, constant-probability models are used as models, the binomial or Poisson for count data and the normal distribution for measurements (or their transformed equivalents). The objective of sampling then becomes to obtain an appropriate statistical estimate of the desired population parameter: for example, the estimators may be the mean (X) and variance (a2): these should be unbiased sufficient estimators of their corresponding parameters (u, a2, respectively). Statistical tests are performed in order to determine that the estimators are of the appropriate kind: all statistical tests are designed to test against bias of a specific kind, although they are stated as tests against randomness. Given a random sample of some population, the estimators are usually stable and adequate to solve the sampling problem. Random samples are simple to define but exceedingly difficult to achieve in practice: in selecting a sample, if every element in the population has an equal chance of occurring, then the sample is a random sample. Interaction between the arrangement of elements in a population, i.e. its structure, and the sample selection process frequently introduces bias—that is, some elements have more chance than others of appearing in the sample and, hence, the sample is not random. An algorithm for dealing pragmatically with this aspect of the sampling problem offers one way of achieving random samples and, therefore, adequate estimators. Examples of the use of this algorithm on various kinds of geological populations, in both field and laboratory, illustrate the requirements for solving sampling problems and the achievement of appropriate estimators.

Throughout October, U.S. producers priced unalloyed 99.5 percent aluminum ingot at 53¢ per pound. Dealers, in last month's domestic market, were quoting unalloyed ingot at a range of 45.5¢-46.3¢ per pound. Costa Rica recently issued a proposal to Japanese aluminum smelters to participate in an integrated aluminum-refining project which would include bauxite development. The project reportedly would include a 600,000-kilowatt hydroelectric power station, a 600,000-metric-ton-per-year alumina plant, and a 300,000-ton-per-year primary aluminum smelter. Two U.S. firms--Aluminum Co. of Amerjca (Alcoa) and Martin Marietta Co.--and several European aluminum smelters are also said to be interested in taking part in this project. Alcoa conducted a feasibility study for the Costa Rican Government in 1970 and estimated the bauxite reserves to contain 150 million metric tons.

This paper gives the results of a reconnaissance of the mining districts in Humboldt County, Nev., made during the month of June, 19373/. During the field work, virtually all the mining districts in the county were visited and many data were obtained on a number of active and inactive properties. No attempt has boon made to include in this report all the properties in the various mining districts, and it should be emphasized that whether or not a property is mentioned herein has no being on its merit. The report covers the location of the various mining; districts, types of deposit, information on past operations and current activity, and general information likely to be useful to operators, investors, and others interested in mining. The geology of the deposits is discussed only briefly. The names of the various mining districts mentioned in this report are those generally used when they were organized for purposes of record and regulation. As organized, the districts embraced largo areas with no definite boundaries, and the names have little significance.

This report describes the development and limited testing of a semi-automatic, raise climber, Compact Service Hoist System designed for stope access in underground metal and nonmetal mines. Demonstrated capabilities of the system include a 1,000-lb payload capacity, control from the traveling cage and from up to three remote stations, operating in vertical or inclined raises 3 ft in diameter and up to 300 ft in length and a travel speed of 50 ft/min. The system has the capability of operating in crooked raises because the conveyance climbs two stationary wire ropes suspended down the raise. The drive unit is electrically powered with power and control signals supplied to the drive unit through an umbilical 'cable also suspended down the raise. The system has been designed for portability, ease of installation and minimum raise development. The hoist has been demonstrated successfully in an above ground test tower. This report provides a detailed description of the hoist design and its demonstrated performance to date.

Results of the investigation have led to several theories of the origin: of the fires, the nature of the chemistry and a method for assessing: the fire potential. THE lack of Aryan roots for the names of metals commonly known among the Aryan settlers of Asia Minor, as well as the later colonizers of Europe, indicates that these races were generally ignorant of the use of metals until they came into contact with Semitic peoples. Practically all mining-terms in current use among the earliest Greeks resemble very strongly their distinctly Semitic equivalents, which can be traced all the way in a broad belt beginning in Lower Mesopotamia, and extending westwardly to the Syrian shores of the Mediterranean. The Greek word " "metallon," for instance, used indiscriminately to designate mine or ore, probably came from the earlier Semitic equivalent, " matal." Again, the Greek words " chrysos " (gold) and " chalkos " (copper) seem to be descended from the Semitic forms " throats " and a chalak." It is a natural inference that primitive mining-methods were evolved by the dwellers in the mineralized areas of Asia Minor, from whom later Greek, Roman, and even North European miners obtained their first notions of the reduction of metallic ores, by virtue of a general westward migration of mining and metallurgy. Some traces of its passage through Turkish territory will be noted in this paper. While European Turkey can boast of one ancient gold-field, the Asiatic dominions of the Sultan may lay claim to at least two well-defined and widely-separated gold-producing districts. "The circulation wear rates of pure nickel, cupronickel and nickel-plated-steel coins were measured and found to be in the ratio 1:3:1 . The relative wear rates of nickel and cupronickel coins were similar to those reported in earlier studies, and the circulation wear data for nickel were used as a reference in laboratory wear tests. A correlation between circulation wear rates and laboratory wear rates formed the basis for a prediction of service life using relief legibility as an 'end of life' criterion. This criterion was determined to be an average surface thickness loss of 12 um. The surf aces of nickel and Nickel-Banded-Steel (N-B-STM) coins were observed to harden both in circulation and in the laboratory tests at a rate of approximately I VHN/year of actual or simulated service life. It was also observed that the laboratory wear rate of N-B -S coins increased as nickel cladding thickness increased and this effect was attributed to differences in surface hardness.Wear test results are also reported for the new Canadian dollar coin material which shows a better wear resistance than pure nickel. IntroductionThe subject of coinage wear has a long history, and a number of studies have been published, concerned both with the measurement of circulation wear rates and with accelerated laboratory tests to simulate the behaviour of coinage materials in service. As early as 1803, wear tests were conducted by Hatchett on gold coinage using various types of vibratory and tumbling machines». These tests were commissioned by King George III of England who was concerned about the wear of gold coins in circulation.Early in this century, Adrian performed laboratory tests that showed that the wear rates of cupronickel 75/25 and nickel coins were in the ratio 3:1 and this ratio was later confirmed in laboratory tests reported by Daeppen and Zurrerw, The latter authors also weighed cupronickel and nickel coins that had been in circulation for various times and observed the same 3: I ratio. There was further support from Tylczak and Blickensderfer who reported significantly higher abrasive wear rates for cupronickel compared to nickel, when rubbed against sand paper."

Mineral economics interfaces the mineral sciences and engineering with finance and economics in the analysis of appropriate questions facing the minerals and energy industries. Its practitioners include those trained in the earth sciences; mining, petroleum, and geological engineering; metallurgy and mineral preparation; as well as finance, information systems, economics, and statistics-most usefully in one or more combinations. Allowing for some overlap, three general areas may be identified: evaluation, economic analysis, and resource appraisal. Evaluation begins with mine investment analysis (exemplified by Gentry and O'Neil, 1984) and process costing, for which the STRAMM Handbook (Anon., 1977) provides a well-known basis for mining and beneficiation. But it extends from property appraisal, often used for the determination of taxes and royalties, through the determination and comparison of transport costs (e.g., Richer and Soo, 1977), and to benefit/cost analyses of externalities. Economic analysis, the subject of this section, is displayed in rigor and extent both theoretically and as applied to commodity classes in Vogely (1985), but it is implicit though apparent throughout Lefond (1983). The text edited by Vogely places minerals in their aggregative context with economic growth and trade, proceeds to the theoretical analysis of minerals and their markets, analyzes the structure and performance of the major mineral sectors, and concludes with policy issues: fuel, nonfuel, and environmental. Resource appraisal employs quantitative methods for the estimation of mineral and energy resources. It moves through geologic, geophysical, and geochemical properties to the identification of estimation procedures for mineral endowment and for the economic measure of stocks and flows of specific minerals (Harris, 1984). Engineering design follows a six–step sequence. Demonstration of this sequence in materials engineering is less common. A case study is presented, using the 1989 paper by Gafner on the development of 990 gold-titanium alloy. This paper identifies a need, develops the problem, identifies alternatives, demonstrates the use of metallurgical principles to identify alternative responses, and shows how more favorable options are selected. The paper can also be used to illustrate engineering design as an iterative process. The paper is also useful as a starting point for more in-depth examination of specific elements of the design process, and lends itself to the creation of student exercises.

Economic activity in the United States picked up in the third quarter, according to the latest estimate released by the Department of Commerce. Real gross national product (GNP)--the Nation's output of goods and services--grew at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.3%, or $17.6 billion, compared with a rate of 1.9% for the second quarter of 1985 and 1.6% for the third quarter of 1984 (table 1). The 4.3% rate is one percentage point above the preliminary estimate reported in the August/September issue of Minerals and Materials. Most of the upward revision was due to the change in business inventories and Government purchases, while the figure for net exports was revised downward substantially. The 4.3% growth bettered by 1.5% the average rate of growth in GNP from 1974 through 1984 and was 1.1 % above that of the period from 1975 through 1984 and 0.7% above that of 1980 through 1984. Of importance to the minerals industry was the $14.4-billion growth in personal consumption expenditures, $10.2 billion of which was for durable goods (especially domestically produced automobiles) and the growing residential investment. The net export deficit continued to grow, however, and investment in nonresidential structures, producers' durable equipment, and business inventories declined. Prices, as measured by the GNP fixed-weighted price index, increased at an annual rate of 3.1% in the third quarter, compared with 3.9% in the second quarter. The slower rate of inflation resulted mainly from a decline in energy prices, following second-quarter increases. Fourth-Quarter Prognosis Many of the economic data available for October and November indicate that the economy is growing modestly and will continue to grow over the next 3 to 6 months. The composite index of leading indicators, designed to predict economic activity within 3 to 6 months, rose 0.3% in October, the sixth consecutive monthly advance, according to the Department of Commerce. Six of the 11 available leading indicators were positive: Stock market prices rose, as did sensitive material prices, credit outstanding, and manufacturers' new orders for consumer goods and materials; initial claims for unemployment insurance decreased, and firms were getting slower delivery of goods. Four of the indicators were negative: Business formations, homebuilding permits, contracts and orders for plant and equipment, and money supply all declined. The average hours worked per week, already at a high level, remained unchanged.

Real2 gross national product (GNP) grew at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.3% in the fourth quarter and at 2.5% for all of 1986, according to the most recent Department of Commerce estimates table 1). The 1986 GNP growth was the lowest since the recession in 1982, and was slightly below the estimate published in the last issue of Minerals and Materials. Barriers to greater economic growth in 1986 included the Federal budget deficit, the trade deficit, reduced energy-sector investment because of low oil prices, and uncertainty over changes in the Federal tax code.3 Major sectors of the economy responsible for the fourth-quarter growth included real Government purchases of goods and services, up $19.9 billion from the third-quarter level; real net exports, up $12.2 billion; real residential investment, up $3.0 billion; and nonresidential fixed investment, up $1.5 billion. The increase in Government purchases of goods and services was attributed to the S25.1 billion rise in net purchases of farm products by the Commodity Credit Corp-oration. Real personal consumption expenditures and inventory investment declined, however. Personal consumption expenditures declined primarily because of reduced motor vehicle purchases. Despite only modest growth during the fourth quarter, the economy improved significantly because of the narrowing of the trade deficit and growing employment (table 2) while maintaining low unemployment and inflation rates. Business sounded an optimistic note, with planned increases in current-dollar capital spending of 0.9% for 1987 compared with a 1.7% decrease in 1986. While it is primarily the nonmanufacturing industries that expect to increase investment from 1986 levels, some manufacturing industries are increasing investment by significant percentages as well, notably the steelmaking and nonferrous metals industries (table 3).

New Copper Deposit in Chile. - The recent copper discovery in Chile, made jointly by U.S.-owned Empresa Minera Utah de Chile, Inc., and Getty Mining Chile), Inc., awaits the passage of Chilean legislation which is expected to govern the terms of new foreign investment in the country's mining sector. Named La Escondida, the discovery is reported to have the potential for producing 100,000 tons of refined copper per year. This compares with Chile's total refined primary copper production in 1980 of 811,000 metric tons, and to U.S. refined primary production in 1980 of 1,122,000 metric tons derived from domestic material, and 89,000 metric tons from foreign material. U.S. Firms Buy Chilean Properties. - A bid of $18.1 million, made jointly by Chevron and St. Joe Minerals Corp., won over competing bids for the purchase of the Libra and Mena gold-silver-copper deposits in northern Chile. Chevron is the lead partner and owns 70% of the venture. The two properties purchased have not been developed to any significant extent. They are located near St. Joe's El Indio gold-silver-copper mine. The venture is also looking at the possible purchase of two other mines in the area.

Contributions made by mining have played a much more significant role in the development of civilization than is generally conceded by historians or recognized by ordinary citizens. In modern society, mined products pervade all industry and the lives of all civilized people. Early man relied largely on stone and ceramics, and eventually metals, to fashion tools and weapons. Civilization was advanced by discoveries such as abundant supplies of high-quality flint in northern France and southern England and firesetting to break rock. Middle Eastern cultures flourished not only because of agriculture and trade, but also because of mineral-rich deposits nearby. The earliest miners date back perhaps to 300,000 BC; their quest was for nonmetallic minerals (chert, flint, obsidian) suitable for utensils and eventually for weapons. Other rocks and minerals (ceramics, clay, salt, meteoric iron) attracted the miners for jewelry, cosmetics, construction materials, food seasoning, and coinage. At first, their excavations were confined to the surface, either pits or placers. But by about 40,000 BC, mine workings had been extended underground as short adits or shafts, and by 8000 BC as elaborate interconnected openings 300 ft (90 m) in depth.
