Ceremonies for the induction of five mining industry pioneers into the National Mining Hall of Fame are scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 25, 2004 at the Las Vegas Hilton in Las Vegas, NV. The 17th Annual Mining Hall of Fame Induction banquet will begin with a reception at 6 p.m., followed by the dinner and program at 7 p.m. The five inductees are Georgius Agricola, David William Brunton, Herbert E. Goodman, David Ray Mitchell and Robert Peele. Georgius Agricola (1494-1555) wrote De ReMetallica, an original and valuable work that discussed everything known about mining during the first half of the 16th century. In De Re Metallica, Agricola reviewed practical means of finding ores, methods of surveying and mining, the assaying of ores, types and uses of mining machinery, smelting, mine administration and more. What prompted the merger of the two long-established American Mining Congress/National Coal Association (AMC/NCA) groups that combine the coal, hard-rock, industrial- and agricultural-minerals sectors of mining? Both associations have been facing similar stresses for several years - structural changes in their respective industries, the changing personality and role of government and well-financed and organized opposition groups. In 1993, the AMC board of directors undertook efforts at reorganizing the association. One board member, who serves on both boards, suggested it might be time to give serious consideration to merging the organizations. This is an idea that had been discussed more or less informally at least three times during my tenure at NCA. Negotiations toward a merger began after that and were consummated in February of this year.

Simulated weathering tests are used to estimate leachate quality of rocks containing varying concentrations of pyrite and carbonates at mines. This study reports the inter-laboratory results from the third phase of a three part effort to develop a standardized, reproducible simulated weathering test for coal mine overburden. Initial development in phases I and II included evaluation of different test apparatus, effects of particle size, gas composition, leaching frequency and other variables. Phases I and II results are reported by Brady et al (2004) and Hornberger et al (2004). In Phase III, a standard column leaching protocol was used by eight commercial, government and university labs to test five rocks of different lithology, pyrite and carbonate content. Ideally, a simulated weathering test should have three characteristics to be useful in mine drainage studies. These include the capability to produce repeatable results, accuracy in simulating field conditions, and a concise test protocol of weeks to a few months. Simulated weathering, or kinetic testing, produces an effluent that simulates mine drainage composition. This can be beneficial for predicting mine drainage quality in comparison to whole rock analyses. The effluent may be tested for the same water quality parameters as the drainage produced during mining, such as pH, acidity, alkalinity, sulfate, iron, manganese, aluminum or other parameters. If the physical, chemical, and biological conditions of the kinetic tests are representative of those found in the mine environment, leachate composition may be used to estimate the water quality parameter concentrations produced during mining. Hornberger and Brady (1998), and Geidel et al (2000), compiled comprehensive chapters on kinetic tests for mine drainage prediction. These sources included: (1) a chronology and synopsis of scientific literature on these kinetic tests as they have developed over approximately 50 years, (2) discussion of the influence of physical, chemical, and biological processes, and (3) general guidelines for test procedures, data interpretation, and recommendations for further research to develop standard methods. Most of the kinetic test methods in use today were substantially developed and applied more than 40 or 50 years ago, including leaching columns (Braley, 1949), humidity cells (Hanna and Brant, 1962), Soxhlet reactors (Pedro, 1961), and field scale tests (Glover and Kenyon, 1962). . The most commonly used kinetic tests for mine drainage prediction are leaching columns and humidity cells. While these kinetic test methods and others have been used in hundreds of mine drainage studies as shown in Hornberger and Brady (1998) and other references (e.g. Sorini, 1997), they have rarely been used in coal mine permitting by either regulatory agencies or the mining industry. The major impediment to routine use of kinetic test methods is the variation in the design and operation of these kinetic tests, and lack of a standardized, accepted (e.g. by EPA or ASTM) test method. Interpretation and data comparison from different studies can be difficult. METHODS Five rocks of varying lithology, mineralogy, carbonate and pyrite content were collected in bulk from Pennsylvanian age coal measures in Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Indiana. Mineralogical composition of the samples was characterized in detail by Hammerstrom et al (in press) using optical, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and electron microprobe methods. Acid Base Accounting (Sobek et al 1978; Skousen et al, 1997, Kania, 1998) was performed on bulk samples for % total sulfur (%S) as a measure of pyrite and potential acid generation, and Neutralization Potential (NP) as an index of carbonate content. A modified NP test, following the procedure suggested by Skousen et al, 1997 was also conducted for four of the five samples. The modified NP test accounts for initial acid consumption, Fe oxidation, and subsequent Fe hydrolysis by the iron carbonate mineral siderite. Siderite, even though it is a carbonate gives zero net alkalinity. Lithologic, Acid Base Accounting and general mineral composition data for the five rocks are shown in table 1 (see Appendix). Whole rock elemental analysis for major and trace elements was conducted on a sub-sample of each rock type. One laboratory was contracted to mix, homogenize, and size the bulk samples and prepare sub-samples for all the participating labs. Splits were sent to eight labs, and each organization was provided a detailed set of instructions for column assembly and leaching procedure. The protocol was developed based on results from phases 1and 2 of this study. The principal features of the column assembly are: a specific composition of particle size by weight (table 2), weekly leaching cycles, and incubation under humidified air containing 10% CO2. Figure 1 shows the column construction. [ ] The particle size distribution of the crushed rock sample is largely an artifact of the crushing process, rather than a natural systems process like the particle size distribution of a soil or an unconsolidated sedimentary deposit. The standardized particle size distribution, shown in Table 2, promotes operational consistency of the weathering test procedure, and provides better control over reaction kinetics. Large amounts of fine particles within specific zones of the leaching columns have been found to impede uniform fluid flow and/or gas flow (Hornberger and Brady, 1998). Regarding reaction kinetics, the importance of surface area to volume ratios has been described in a previous phase of this study (Brady et al., 2004), and significant differences in crushed particle size distributions and effective surface areas were found among the lithologic units. Comminution is one of the fundamentals of mineral processing, requiring large expenditures to be made on capital equipment, installation, power and maintenance. The trend toward lower grades and higher operating costs, mean mining operations are becoming increasingly marginal. The challenge is to improve and more importantly, utilise crushing and milling technologies that provide for reduced capital and operating costs whilst providing increased unit efficiencies. The Svedala Barmac Autogenous Crushing Mill presents such an opportunity by providing many of the cost savings and production increases required by its ability to produce a finer mill feed size and realise reduced energy consumption. This paper briefly describes the operation of the Svedala Barmac Autogenous Crushing Mill and reviews its benefits towards improving the efficiency of crushing and milling operations.

Estimating the residual metal inventory of large heap leaching operations is desirable for many reasons. Several methods have been tried with limited success. Drilling data from the Valley Leach Facility at AngloGold Ashanti's Cripple Creek and Victor Gold Mine has been used to develop a robust inventory estimation technique. The technique is presented along with discussion of the particular inventory components and evaluation methodologies.

Particle size analysis is a fundamental measurement utilized in the mining industry, especially in comminution, hydrometallurgy, and mineral processing. While sieves and cyclosizers are the standard methods used to determine particle size distributions, in recent years alternative instruments have been developed that claim to provide more rapid and equally reliable results. Newmont Metallurgical Services has implemented the use of two such instruments, along with traditional methods (sieves and a cyclosizer), on a daily basis. The Malvern Mastersizer 2000 laser analyzer is a wet sample system that can analyze particles in the size range 0.02µm to 2000µm, and the Horiba CAMSIZER® is a dry system that can analyze particles in the size range of 30µm to 30mm using digital image processing. A comparative analysis has been performed to determine the applicability of each particle sizing method in laboratory testing.

China, Mexico, Spain and Turkey are the leading producers of celestite (strontium sulfate), the most common strontium mineral. Of an estimated 510 kt (562,000 st) of celestite produced worldwide during 2004, 98 percent was produced in those countries. Deposits of strontianite (strontium carbonate), another strontium mineral, have been identified in China and Malawi. Relatively small quantities are reported from the deposit in China. Although celestite deposits occur in the United States, no domestic celestite has been mined since 1959.

The stability of surfactant-free foam films was studied using the thin film pressure balance (TFPB) technique. In pure water, it was not possible to produce foam films due to weak film elasticity and strong hydrophobic force. In the presence of NaCl, however, the hydrophobic force was sufficiently dampened to allow metastable films to form. At 10-5 M NaCl, the equilibrium film thickness reached a maximum of approximately 130 nm at pH 6.0-7.3. The thinner films obtained on either side of this pH range was due to the increased ionic strengths associated with the HCl and NaOH additions for pH control.

Introduction Democratic countries are founded on the principle that all citizens have the right to participate in policy setting and decision-making processes. Citizen participation is especially evident in environmental issues and policies. In the United States, there are currently over 10,000 environmental organizations and new ones are being formed each year. Many of these organizations are formed on a watershed basis and are particularly concerned about the impact mining has on the environment. While the environmental issues vary from area to area, most concerns center around mining impacts related to subsidence, water pollution, and water diversion. Citizens have a number of avenues for participating in lawmaking that affects the mining industry. Some of these avenues include participation in litigation and citizen ballot initiatives. In addition, there are less formal methods of participation that include attending public meetings, commenting on agency rules or lobbying on specific legislation. The intent of this article is outline the various public participations mechanisms, highlight the latest legal developments that have affected mining industry through citizen participation, and briefly discuss emerging issues.

Moisture deterioration of clay-rich roof rocks causes high numbers of roof falls in coal mines in humid summer months. Rocks with high moisture content are generally weaker and can further deteriorate when subjected to wetting and drying cycles. As a result, it is important to evaluate the moisture-sensitivity of roof rock prior to mining. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has evaluated three moisture-sensitivity index tests on roof rocks from 23 U.S. coal mines. The three tests were the University of Kentucky Weatherability test (Weatherability test), the Consol Energy Water Sensitivity test (Water Sensitivity test), and the NIOSH Immersion test (Immersion test). Of these three tests, the Weatherability and Water Sensitivity tests are more reliable in classifying the moisture-sensitivity of roof rocks. INTRODUCTION The need for cleaning and recovery of fine (minus 28 mesh or 0.5 mm) coal fraction has increased in recent years. This results from realizing a substantial recovery of ultraclean coal from the waste stream improving overall Btu (heat) recovery, providing extra revenue for the coal industry. Also the potential of using the clean coal so obtained for making coal-water mixture which could replace oil. An additional benefit of recovery clean coal from the waste stream is reducing environmental concern of burning uncleaned coal and in waste disposal. Deashing of coal by physical beneficiation processes is limited by the degree to which ash components are liberated from coal. Conventional processes have been inefficient in terms of Btu recovery, for ultrafine coal. Chemical cleaning methods, which involves leaching of ash material from coal, have provided ultraclean coal at high Btu recoveries, are more costly than the physical cleaning methods. An advanced physical separation technique that appears to address the need discussed above is selective flocculation. This technique which has been successfully utilized in iron ore beneficiation offers the potential of processing fine and ultrafine coal to produce a clean fuel. OBJECTIVES The main objective of the present study is to investigate applicability of selective flocculation technique for recovery of clean coal product from the waste coal slurry supplied by the Peabody Coal co., from their three different coal preparation plants. It is also the objective of the program to conduct preliminary economic study of the selective flocculation process.

Many technology problems must be solved if we are to continue to produce phosphate at our current rate of consumption. The U.S. produces at least 25% of the world's phosphate, 40 million tons of phosphate rock per annum with most of the production coming from Florida. Of particular concern are improved separation efficiency and the ability to treat new dolomitic resources. Phosphate flotation technology needs include: 1. Simplification of the standard flowsheet 2. Improved recovery of coarse phosphate 3. Selective flotation for phosphate recovery from dolomitic resources Preliminary results, including tests on plant feed from Florida show that these objectives may be achieved with a new collector chemistry depending on the specific circumstances. The effectiveness of the new collector chemistry has been demonstrated by the preliminary results from single stage flotation experiments both at the University of Utah laboratories and at Florida Institute of Phosphate Research (FIPR) laboratories. In the best case, from these experiments with low grade (5% P2O5) coarse feed (16x35 mesh), a single stage phosphate recovery of 95 % was achieved with a concentrate grade of 31 % P2O5. Such a separation efficiency could not be achieved using the traditional fatty acid/fuel oil collector. Based on these results it seems that a one step process may be possible for phosphate flotation and a research program is justified for the development of this new flotation strategy.

Barrick Goldstrike’s (Goldstrike) AA Heap Leach Pad is an HDPE lined facility used for gold recovery from low grade ores using conventional cyanide heap leach technology, operated from 1987 through 1999. Goldstrike prepared a unique reclamation plan for the AA Leach Pad Facility to provide for a cost-effective, environmentally sound facility closure and to fulfill the State of Nevada’s closure requirements. Traditional Nevada leach pad closure has involved rinsing to reduce cyanide concentration to an acceptable level, followed by reclamation. However, certain metals and compounds are not typically reduced by rinsing and some constituents may increase in concentration with rinsing. A closure scenario to effect limited infiltration through installation of a capillary cover for the leach pad was developed. The capillary cover was constructed by placing a fine-grained layer above the coarse-grained spent leach material to create a capillary break. In an arid climate such as Nevada, the fine-grained layer will rarely reach full saturation and the cover will be able to store water during precipitation and allow removal of water through evaporation and transpiration (ET) during the growing season. A 1.22 m (4 ft) cover thickness was selected as the optimum design cover thickness. The drainage network on the surface of the re-contoured AA Heap Leach Pad was specifically designed to enhance the revegetation, reclamation, and sediment yield control aspects of the AA Heap Leach Pad closure, while resulting in a natural looking surface, compatible with the surrounding topography. Adjacent natural topographic features were used to establish target design parameters for re-contouring and erosion control design.

Therefore the Institute of Mining Engineering I from the RWTH AachenUniversity developed indicators and an assessment system for the mineral raw materials industryon operation, company and sector level on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Labour(Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Arbeit, BMWA) and the Federal Institute for Geosciencesand Natural Resources (Bundesanstalt für Geowissenschaften und Rohstoffe, BGR).In total 30 indicators were defined and designed to assess the performance of the mineral rawmaterials industry in terms of sustainable development, 10 indicators for each pillar (economical,ecological and social pillar).The following paper describes some of the results focussing on the development of environmentalindicators. These had to be adapted or completely new designed in order to match the specificcharacteristics of the mineral raw materials industry."

During the last twenty years computers have be-come widely used to assist with the simulation and design of large scale, primary ventilation systems. However, to date there are few computer programs available to help with the modeling of auxiliary ventilation in dead-end headings or tunnels. This paper presents the results of the first year of a research and programming study dedicated to the development of a user-friendly duct simulation tool. Included is a literature review that summarises publications on duct leakage and resistance, on previous programs developed for the simulation of airflow in ducts, and case studies on extended ductlines in mines and tunnels. The methodology behind the development of Ductsim, a Windows based simulation program is presented.

Waste areas of a mine should be sealed especially if there is a risk of spontaneous combustion. Leakage through and around such seals can be problematic. Pressure balancing has been one of the favored options to prevent the ingress of air into these waste areas. Balance chambers require maintenance and monitoring to ensure that they are effective. This paper explores the use of inert gas as a means of controlling ingress of air and egress of waste gases as a means of reducing leakage around seals.

Twenty-three companies mined kaolin in nine States in 2004. Production was estimated to be 7.6 Mt (8.3 million st) valued at $912 million, based on preliminary data. This was a slight decrease from 7.68 Mt (8.46 million st) valued at $939 million in 2003.Georgia was the leading producer state with an estimated 6.5 Mt (7.1 million st) in production. It was followed, in decreasing order of tonnage, by South Carolina, Alabama, California, Texas, Arkansas, Nevada, Florida and North Carolina. Georgia accounted for nearly the entire domestic water-washed, delaminated, and pigment-grade calcined kaolin production. Consumption Sales to the paper industry accounted for 49 percent of domestic sales and 64 percent of total sales. Other major markets for domestic sales were refractory products (10 percent), paint (5 percent), fiberglass (4 percent), catalysts (3 percent) and rubber (2 percent).Paper coating and filler markets accounted for about 87percent of export sales of kaolin.

When activated carbon is used for recovering gold in gold industry, carbon fine materials are generated in stripping, acid-washing and kiln regeneration circuits. The carbon fines at the Fort Knox mine, Fairbanks Gold Mining, Inc., contain up to 0.68 kg/t (20 oz/st) of gold. In laboratory tests, gold in the carbon fines was effectively transferred to coarse virgin carbon when the carbon fines were mixed with virgin carbon in cyanide solution at a cyanide concentration higher than 0.10%. A plant-scale test conducted at the Fort Knox mine also shows effective gold transfer from the carbon fines to virgin carbon with a 95% gold recovery in a two-stage gold transfer process.

Steady increases in longwall production have required operators to apply greater quantities of ventilating air in an effort to control and dilute respirable dust. Significant increases in shearer speeds necessitate that longwall supports also be advanced at a faster rate. Both of these factors may contribute to overall respirable dust levels on the longwall face because as supports are lowered and advanced, broken material falling from the top of the canopy is entrained directly into the air stream. To address this issue, the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory collected respirable dust samples from four longwall faces to characterize shield-generated dust. This paper investigates the influence of air velocity and shield advance rates on respirable dust levels. Also discussed are engineering controls currently used to reduce shield dust and alternative controls being investigated by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).
