The estimated value of natural gemstones produced from U.S. deposits during 2004 was $12.9 million. This was a 3-percent increase from that of 2003. U.S. gemstone production included agates, amber, beryl, coral, garnet, jade, jasper, opal, pearl, quartz, sapphire, shell, topaz, tourmaline, turquoise and other gem materials. More than 60 varieties of gemstones have been produced commercially from U.S. mines. But commercial mining of gemstones has never been extensively undertaken in the United States. Most of the deposits have been relatively small compared with other mining operations. In the United States, much of the current gemstone mining is conducted by collectors, gem clubs and hobbyists rather than business organizations.

Chemical grouting has been successfully used for over forty years to control the movement of groundwater in a wide variety of applications including tunnels, subway systems, sanitary sewers, mines and construction projects. This paper illustrates the versatility of chemical grouts by reviewing three projects where chemical grout was utilized to address some very difficult water control challenges. The featured product is acrylamide which can be used alone or in conjunction with other types of grout such as cementitious products. Acrylamide grout is injected as a two component product that will react and form an impermeable gel when the components combine. There are notable differences between the acrylamide based products and cementitious products. The most notable and significant difference is that acrylamide is a true solution grout that contains no particulates and has a viscosity of 1-2cps. This feature enables the acrylamide grout to penetrate very small geological features that other grouts could not penetrate and to seal small cracks and fissures where groundwater seepage is occurring. The product also has an adjustable gel set time from a few seconds to several hours which enables the operator to determine the product travel before it forms a gel. When properly applied the product has a half-life in the soil of 362 years (per testing by the US Department of Energy).

The Cigar Lake uranium deposit was discovered in 1981 at the south western end of Waterbury Lake, approximately 660 km north of Saskatoon in the province of Saskatchewan (see Figure 1). It is the largest undeveloped high grade uranium deposit in the world. It contains proven and probable reserves of more than 226 million pounds U3O8 at an average grade of 20.7%. The world average grade is less than 1% U3O8. [ ] The ore body is located about 450 m below surface at the interface between sandstone above and basement rock below (see Figure 2). The sandstone is fractured rock and saturated with water. This makes water inflow a real hazard at the mine. In fact there have already been two significant mine inflow events. The first of these occurred in October 2006 and resulted in the flooding of the mine. The second occurred in August, 2008 during mine recovery activities.

Introduction Precambrian shield terrains the world over are experiencing an unprecedented level of concerted exploration for lode gold deposits. Reasons for this include: • The increase in the price of gold (following 40 years at $1.13/g or $35 per oz) has transformed targets that were once unattractive into viable exploration propositions. • The relatively suppressed market for other metals produced from shields (base metals, nickel, iron, and uranium) has further focused exploration attention on gold. • The preeminence of gold production from rocks of early Precambrian age, as shown in Fig. 1. • The relatively high grade of gold in these mines (averaging about 10 Wt or 0.29 oz per st) permits profitable extraction even under depressed gold prices. A number of these mines have been in continuous operation for more than 50 years. • The recent discovery of the major Hemlo deposit, in well exposed rocks adjacent to the Trans Canada Highway, has had a world-wide impact. This demonstrates that a major new deposit can be found even in an accessible, well exposed area of a shield; gold mineralization is susceptible to rational exploration; and new target types for gold exploration exist. This paper reviews exploration activity for gold in shield terrains worldwide (Fig. 2), excluding Early Proterozoic paleoplacers of the Witwatersrand type. Emphasis is on the Archean, which is traditionally the most productive part of the Precambrian shields. There is also an emphasis on the Canadian shield (Fig. 3) because of its vast areal extent and exceptionally broad range of mineralization styles. Geological Approach A basic problem exists in gold exploration when compared to exploration for base metal massive sulfides that predominated during the 1960s and 1970s. Gold concentrations cannot usually be detected by airborne geophysical instruments. The majority of massive sulfide deposits were detected using airborne electromagnetic detectors and magnetometers. A full 75% of Canadian gold discoveries can be credited to surface prospecting. The percentage is even higher in other countries. This observation allows for great optimism for two reasons: • Large areas of shield terrain are obscured by either surficial deposits (glacial tills, clays, and desert sands) or deep surface weathering. This makes them inaccessible to prospectors. Logic dictates that such obscured areas should have the same potential for gold concentration as has exposed bedrock. • The Hemlo style of mineralization, a roughly tabular ore body where gold is associated with disseminated sulfides, is different from the traditional prospecting target. Gravity concentration at the Pegasus Gold/Montana Tunnels Mine, near Helena, MT, began in June 1991 when a coarse-gold-scalping circuit was commissioned. It processes a small portion of the ball-mill circulating load to reduce the risk of gold particles that are too coarse to float from advancing to flotation. The circuit also cost-effectively enhances overall gold recovery and payable gold ounces. This gravity circuit has been a major success. Since the circuit was commissioned, throughput has increased 30%. Several modifications and improvements were made during the last three years that allowed the gravity circuit to keep pace with the higher tonnage. The overall approach to gravity concentration at Montana Tunnels has always been to optimize production rather than maximize the gold ounces produced. This philosophy has now yielded a circuit expansion and relocation project. It will allow for an estimated 50% increase in gravity gold production, while significantly reducing the unit costs of production.

Separation of minerals by shape has received little attention, since minerals normally do not break into different shapes during crushing and grinding. However, comminution of consumer wastes generates opportunities for novel separations based on particle shape. For instance, ductile plastics are broken into longer curved shapes, whereas brittle plastics yield angular particles. Using spouting beds for particle separation in water requires controlling the spout's instability. The preferred geometry for such redesigned spouting beds is reported. Plastic cylinders, discs and spheres were separated as a function of rising water velocity and amount of particles in the system. By using 5 mm particles, differences in settling behavior could be video recorded.

Introduction Syncrude Canada Ltd. is the operating company for a consortium of industry and government participants that produce synthetic crude oil from their leases in the Athabasca Oil Sands. Production from the $2.3 billion (1978) integrated mining, extraction, and bitumen upgrading and utility complex started in September 1978. Production is currently about 6.4 Mm3/a (40 million bbl per year) of high quality synthetic crude oil. This is done by upgrading the extracted bitumen from the oil sands mined. Plans are to increase the production to 8 Mm3/a (50 million bbl pier year) by 1989. At that time, the mining operation will be required to deliver 100 Mt/a (110 million stpy) of oil sand (ore) to the extraction plants, and handle quantities of waste ranging from 50 to 75 Mt/a (55 to 83 million stpy). The Syncrude plant is located at Mildred Lake, 40 km (25 miles) north of Fort McMurray and 480 km (300 miles) north of Edmonton, Alberta. Climate, particularly winter, is therefore a major factor affecting the design and operation of all the Syncrude production facilities. Bitumen production, consisting of overburden removal, oil/sand mining, bitumen extraction, and tailings disposal, account for about half the total SCO production costs. Considerable research and development, therefore, continues to be applied to improve both material handling and bitumen recovery methods. Potential applications for feeder breakers were identified in the material handling aspects of both overburden and oil sand mining to reduce cost and to attain planned production increments. Overburden removal Overburden materials on the leases comprise thin Pleistocene sands, gravel and fill, and sands, silts and clays of the thicker Clearwater Formation with the silt to clay components predominating. The latter contains multiple leases of hard siltstone with unconfined compressive strengths up to 148 MPa and thicknesses up 0.1 to 0.9 m (1 to 3ft). Characteristics of the overburden as well as the climatic environment and scale of operation present unique problems for the efficient removal of the material. In a bucketwheel/conveyor system, the weak silty clay formations require relatively flat working slopes for safe operation, while the siltstone lenses and frozen overburden require blasting or selective removal by other equipment. These factors, combined with the normal bucketwheel/conveyor design parameters, lead to high capital investment and relatively inefficient use of that capital. As part of its risk management plan, the South Central Connecticut Regional Water Authority (RWA) is assessing the condition of its system of raw water conveyance tunnels and connecting pipelines. In 2006, the RWA inspected one of the system?s main tunnels, a 4-mi, 1950s-era tunnel that had not been inspected since its construction. The inspection team prepared extensively for the unknown conditions in the tunnel, and the inspection was completed safely and successfully. This paper describes the team?s pre-entry preparations, dewatering and ventilation efforts, surface-to-tunnel communication, access, physical inspection of the tunnel, and the lessons learned throughout the process. Additionally, this paper will preview planning for the subsequent inspections.

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PaDEP) has been issuing surface mining permits since 1984 that authorize remining in areas that will affect preexisting pollutional discharges. These permits require the mine operator to employ best management practices to reduce pollution loading from abandoned mine discharges. A total of 110 completed mining operations with 233 discharges were evaluated to determine the impact to water quality. Overall, acid loading from these discharges was reduced by 7,200 kg (15,900 lbs) per day or 61%. Metals loadings were also reduced. For acidity, 49% of discharges improved or were eliminated, 52% showed no significant change, and fewer than 1% got worse. Loading reductions resulted from a combination of reduced concentrations and lower flows.

This paper presents the results of column flotation of a fine feed sample of Florida phosphate. A central composite design is used to study the main and interaction effects of parameters affecting column efficiency. The statistical design is also used to determine the optimum conditions. The results indicate that, depending on the experimental conditions, it is possible to achieve a concentrate of high grade and recovery. A concentration of 15 ppm of non-ionic frother is found to be enough to maximize the recovery at the pH of 9.5.

Effective tools are not only essential for the design of practical and efficient underground mine ventilation systems but must also play an integral part in the operation of the mine. One such tool is VUMA-coal ventilation simulation software. VUMA-coal is Windows-based and has been specially designed for the simulation of underground coal mines and includes user-friendly coal specific interfaces and three-dimensional graphics designed to facilitate in the construction and analysis of networks. VUMA-coal can be utilised during the design phase of new collieries, be used to conduct ?what-if? and optimisation studies, and be integrated into the ?day-to-day? ventilation related operations. In addition, VUMA-coal can be used to simulate dust and gas distribution in a ventilation network, as well as predict the impact of control measures. This paper describes the interactive VUMA-coal ventilation simulation software and its underlying design features and outlines a case study of how VUMA-coal has been integrated into Anglo Coal?s Ventilation and Occupational Hygiene Engineering [VOHE] department as part of the standard planning and evaluation process in their operational mines as well as long term planning and future mining operations.

The numbers tell the story of this one. More than 50,000 people and 1,890 exhibitors took over the Las Vegas Convention Center Sept. 24-26 for the largest mining trade show in the world ? MINExpo. Inside the convention center, some of the largest machines used in mining were on display. Caterpillar, Liebherr, Komatsu and Hitachi displayed ultraclass offroad mining trucks and shovels. Atlas Copco and Schramm were among companies that rolled in mining drills and Bridgestone, Goodyear and Michelin were among the companies showing off the massive tires used by the trucks. Throughout the three halls and an outdoor display area, just about every kind of product, gadget or service used in the mining industry could be found on display somewhere.

Wound rotor motors are used in difficult mining applications where there is a need to start high inertia, hard starting loads while limiting inrush current They are recognized as robust and simple to control. This paper will cover the performance, specification, and important issues to be considered when applying medium voltage wound rotor motors in mining applications. Medium voltage grinding, crusher, and conveyor applications will be discussed. Specifically covered are motor efficiency, speed range, and rotor control. Crane motors often have wound rotor construction, but their load cycle and ratings are outside the scope of this paper.

The dry grinding and leaching circuits of the Barrick Gold’s new Roasting Facility at Goldstrike Mine in Nevada, USA incorporate well proven technologies in a unique combination. During the design of the plant, every effort was made to utilize the best available technologies from the perspective of capital, environment and operating costs. Crushing is a two stage process using gyratory and cone crusher. Ore is stockpiled and then reclaimed to two parallel dry grinding mills. The double rotator dry grinding mills include a drying chamber, coarse and fine compartments and utilize a gearless motor drive (GMD) or “wrap-around”. In-circuit product transfer is accomplished with air slides and bucket elevators. Finished product separation is performed by both static and dynamic classifiers with the final product captured in baghouses. Recycle of unfinished product utilizes cascade chutes. The final ground product reports to two 2000 ton roaster feed silos. The two-stage oxygen flu-solids roasters with their associated gas train are the subject of a separate paper. The cyanide leach circuit is a standard carbon in leach system with circular swept screens for interstage carbon retention. The loaded carbon is sent to the existing Goldstrike autoclave plant for stripping and regeneration. Tails, after cyanide destruction, are deposited in the existing tailings dam with tails from the autoclave facility. Throughout the circuit, Clean Plant Design criteria were used to assure environmental compliance, ambiental acceptability and ensure worker health and safety. The commissioning and operation of the double rotator grinding technology has been very successful at Barrick Goldstrike.

There is no doubt that simulated ventilation networks must be adequately verified before they can be extrapolated and used for predictive purposes. There are two general approaches as to how the verification can be established and these are summarised as follows; The first approach is to measure all individual branches with trailing hoses or barometers to get individual pressure drop and flow per branch and then calculate individual resistance factors for input into the software. The simulator is run, checking that the output makes general sense (check some sensitivities if possible). The network is now considered as verified. The pressure drop to be measured is relatively small and thus it is inherent that the measured set of individual K factors will be imprecise no matter how much care is taken in the measurements and the resultant simulations will inherit the same problem. In the second approach, the network is assembled using estimated (Atkinson) K factors (based on physical features of airway, past experience and catalogued typical K factors). Only the main primary flow rates are measured and hence the relative distribution of the primary ventilation in the main airways is determined (probably about 10 off primary air flow measurements). Main critical pressure differentials at main and booster fans and across critical doors are measured (probably about 6 off primary pressure differential measurements need to be made). The simulator is run and the computer model is used to iterate and select an updated suite of K factors so that the flow balances and pressure differentials are correctly simulated (typically only 2 or 3 iterations are all that is needed). The network is now considered as verified. The pressure differences to be measured will be substantial in absolute terms and can be measured with high precision. Also, because only primary flows are measured, these will generally be measured at higher air speed points and hence improved relative accuracy. This leads to more accurate simulation results. "Any economic calculation with respect to potential submarine mining activities requires reliable analytical data on the contents of valuable metals in these ores, including trace metals such as rare earth elements as well as Ti, Mo, V, Zr and Li. Due to the very special matrix of ferromanganese nodules (30% manganese oxides, 10-20% iron oxides, silicates; see Kuhn et al., this volume), their geochemical analyses pose a real challenge. Available ferromanganese nodules reference materials, e.g., NOD-P1 and A1, JMn-1, GBW07249, SDO-4 to -7 and NM2388, generally have only a few certified values for trace elements. Published data for these reference materials, collected in the GeoReM database (http://georem.mpch-mainz.gwdg.de/) are either rare for high technology metals or widely scattered for certain elements, especially the PGEs. Since most of these materials were released in the 1990s, many analytical procedures have seen significant advancement.In order to facilitate analytical quality assurance during exploration and potential future mining activities, the German Federal Institute of Geosciences and Mineral Resources (BGR) has contracted the Central Geological Laboratory of Mongolia (CGL) to produce a certified reference material for nodule analytics. Certified reference materials provide the highest level of reliability in geo-analytical measurements currently available and the CGL has a long-term experience in producing geological reference materials. Recently, the CGL was accredited as a reference material producer according to ISO Guide 34 by the American organization ACLASS (Assured Calibration and Laboratory Accreditation Select Services). Furthermore, it has been accredited as a testing laboratory according to ISO 17025."

Proven and probable coal reserves in Iran are estimated to be in excess of 5 Billion tons while the annual coal production is a mere 2 Million tons. Underdevelopment of the industry has proved higher production levels to be impossible, despite growing demand for energy supplies. The existences of numerous legislation are thought to have a detrimental effect on coal mining activities to the extent that some business entities have become uneconomical in many areas. This paper provides an analysis of the prevailing mining laws, policy making, legal frameworks and obstacles. It also outlines some other obstacles enshrined in the law and also highlights areas where foreign direct investment should be encouraged. The costs of lost opportunities are then estimated. The paper concludes by demonstrating that deregulations, amendments and in some cases complete abolishment of the incumbent legislations governing the coal mining industry will greatly enhance development of the industry. The analysis provided in this paper together with the results obtained, can prove useful to macro-economic policy makers both at local and national levels.

Upgrading of a low-grade titanium slag (~55% TiO2) with high silica, calcia, magnesia and iron contents has been studied using sulphation roasting technique using SO2/air gas mixture followed by hydrochloric acid leaching. XRD analysis of the sulphated slag reveals the presence of kennedyite (Fe2O3. MgO. 3TiO2), rutile (TiO2), calcium sulphate (CaSO4) and calcium silicate (3CaO.SiO2) phases. The residue after leaching contains mainly kennedyite, rutile phases and free silica with traces of calcium silicate phase. Synthetic rutile that has about 83% TiO2 can be produced at the optimum conditions. Thermodynamic calculations give rational explanations of the obtained results.

"A reliable supply of non-energy raw materials is a precondition for the functioning of the European economy. In line with its importance, the issue of raw materials supply has become more prominent in the past years, especially owing to turbulent raw material markets. However, these turbulences are not due to depletion of the geological resources but to a missmatch of (expected) supply and (expected) demand, with several interacting factors influencing the markets both from the supply as well as from the demand side. A recent evaluation, published in June 2010 within the framework of the EU Raw Materials Initiative, sought to bring together these two sides of raw material markets and asked the question "which raw materials are critical for the EU?" Herein we present the methodology used by the Ad-hoc Working Group on Defining Critical Raw Materials and the results obtained, complemented by results from the study "Raw Materials for Emerging Technologies"."

Whilst mine planners almost universally assume deterministic forward commodity prices when undertaking valuations of mining projects, historical data well demonstrates that those prices are quite volatile. This paper seeks to understand and quantify how this forward price uncertainty will impact mining project valuation. This paper will also present a way of computing an upper bound on the expected Net Present Value (NPV) of a mining project given forward commodity price uncertainty.
