The Gumuskoy silver mine, owned by the Etibank, in the province of Kutahya, Turkey, has been operating since 1987 with primary, secondary and tertiary crushers, and two parallel single stage ball mill circuits. Continuing problems with crushing and feeding of the ore to the ball mills, because of the moisture retaining and sticky nature of the ore, prompted an investigation into the possibility of converting the grinding circuit to an autogenous or semiautogenous grinding circuit. This would remove the bottleneck associated with the secondary and tertiary crushing. At the same time the target feedrate is to be raised from 140 t/h to 175 t/h. This paper demonstrates the response of five ore types, and blends of ore types in an onsite pilot plant test program, and also suggests how the variations can be handled in a SAG mill/ball mill circuit incorporating just one of the present ball mills.

This work presents and discusses the influence of the surface tension (gLV) of methanol/water mixtures on the flotation response of apatite versus gangue minerals conditioned with flotation reagents (75 g/t cornstarch and 100 g/t Berol 867) at pH 10.6. Berol 867 is a collector composed of sodium alkyl sarcosinate plus nonionic surfactant. The highest Schulz efficiency of separation (recovery of apatite minus recovery of gangue) was achieved at ?51.0 mN/m. The critical surface tension of wettability (gC) of apatite was found to occur at 34.7 mN/m when determined by means of gamma flotation experiments, and it was 33.9 mN/m when determined by Zisman?s approach.

Problems discussed concern encountering of high temperatures [up to 66°C] and heavy flow of water [150 L.P.S] during the construction of the 10.15 MØH.R.T. for the 2500 MW Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Project in the Himalayas(India). Over a length of 2500 M progress of work got seriously affected resulting in excessive time for completion - two years [max. monthly progress achieved was 178 M [Heading]. Many innovative and simple steps were taken to complete the work in these inhospitable environs affecting working of both men and machines. Also it meant a review of the design of concrete lining. Other geological conditions affecting the progress are also described.

Traditionally, “Means and Methods” were the sole responsibility of Contractors. However, because of a number of litigious projects in the 1970s, Owners and their Engineers began including Suggested Methods of Construction (SMC) in Contract Drawings. By the late 1990s these SMCs were becoming baseline “Means and Methods” with Contractor recommended changes often considered as Value Engineering proposals. By 2004, the word “Suggested” was sometimes changed to “Prescriptive.” Owners are also purchasing TBMs and other mining equipment for Contractors prior to bid. Is limiting the contracting community’s innovation in developing their own “Means and Methods” and selecting their own equipment in the best interests of the Owner? Does it reduce the Owner’s, Engineer’s or the Contractor’s risk? Are claims reduced and finally what is the impact on the bid? A questionnaire was sent to more than fifty senior engineering field and management personnel representing more than 30 heavy construction companies to ask their opinion on these questions.

Several studies have been conducted on blastability and prediction of fragmentation. The term blastability is used to refer the susceptibility of the rock to blasting and is closely related to fragmentation. Parameters that determine fragmentation by blasting may be divided into two groups. The first group consists of blasting design parameters. The blast design parameters are controllable parameters and determined by the explosive engineers. The burden, spacing between holes, bench height, drillhole diameter, stemming height and explosive density are all design parameters. The second group consists of rock mass parameters that are referred to as uncontrollable parameters. The uncontrollable parameters are physical and mechanical properties of rock and rock mass structure. The strength, modulus of elasticity, density of rock, number of joint sets, joint orientation and joint spacing are among uncontrollable parameters. The rock mass parameters and blast design parameters should be considered together to explain fragmentation process. In this study, a blast database was accumulated to use for multivariate analysis. The blast database contains the blasts performed near Istanbul region quarries and the blasts that were preformed in various mines in the world by the blasting researchers. The cluster analysis was used to separate the blast data into different similarity groups. Group memberships were analyzed and checked by the discriminant analysis. Then, the multivariate regression analysis was used to develop a prediction equation for blast fragmentation for each group. Finally, a validation of the suggested models was performed for various mines. The model comprises blast design parameters, mechanical properties of rock and rock mass structure.

Through the USGS National Coal Availability pro-gram, two San Juan Basin studies have been completed. The study areas are in the northwest Bisti field, Fruitland Formation and in the eastern Standing Rock field, Menefee Formation. Original resources are 4.66 Gt and 3.46 Gt (5.14 billion stand 3.82 billion st), respectively, in the Bisti and Standing Rock areas. Bisti coal resources are greatly reduced by the Bisti-De-Na-Zin wilderness area (1.13 Gt (1.25 billion st)). Technological restrictions remove 31% from Standing Rock original resource. Available resources are 60% (2.79 Gt(3.07 billion st)) of the Bisti original resource and66% (2.26 Gt (2.49 billion st)) of the original Standing Rock resource.

Mining activity in a number of metal ores has been running quite high over the last few years. In particular, those metals that employ acid functional extraction processes such as copper, nickel, cobalt and uranium have been particularly active. The world?s largest nickel mine ? the massive $4.76 billion Ambatovy nickel mine on the African island nation of Madagascar is nearing completion. When it reaches its full production capacity in 2013, the mine will produce 60,000 MT/yr of nickel and 5600 MT/yr of cobalt. Coming on the heels of the Ambatovy project is the Long Harbour Processing Plant in Newfoundland, Canada which will process the ore from Vale?s Voisey Bay mine in Labrador. Voisey?s Bay is expected to generate more than 50,000 MT/yr of nickel ore when it starts up in 2013. Next up will be the Boleo project in Mexico on the Baja peninsula. When commissioned in 2013, the $1.4 Billion Boleo project is expected to produce 60,000 MT/yr copper, 3100 MT/yr cobalt, 36,000 MT/yr zinc and 100,000 ? 250,000 MT/yr manganese carbonate.

In response to Public Law 95-87 (SMCRA), Colorado promulgated regulations governing the mining of Coal. These regulations require the prediction, monitoring and mitigation of "material damage" caused by subsidence. All permitted underground coal mines within Colorado have approved subsidence programs. Preliminary monitoring results indicate the subsidence mechanical predictions have been sufficiently accurate to preclude material subsidence damage. The State of Colorado has developed a practical approach to regulating subsidence, which stresses monitoring verification of predicted subsidence phenomena. However, shortcomings exist in our ability to precisely predict the secondary consequences of subsidence, including effects to structures, the hydrologic balance and the environment. Lack of accuracy in predicting these secondary consequences results in uncertainty, necessitating conservatism in permitting. To avoid increasingly stringent permit restrictions, future research should emphasize the secondary consequences of subsidence.

INTRODUCTION New York City Water Supply—Background and History Since the 1840s New York City has been developing the largest, and perhaps, the best urban water supply and distribution system in the world in terms of quality and reliability. One of the engineering marvels of the modern world, the New York City water supply and distribution system serves a population of almost nine million, including residents in nearby Westchester, Putnam, Ulster, and Orange Counties of New York State. The average daily supplies presently are running at almost 60 m3/sec(about 1,350 million gallons per day). The watershed for the New York City water supply system, under the jurisdiction of the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP), consists of19 reservoirs and three controlled lakes, and covers an area of approximately5,000 square kilometers (about 2,000 square miles) north of New York City. The watershed total available storage capacity is about two billion cubic meters (560 billion gallons) and is divided into three reservoir systems: the Catskill and Delaware watersheds located West of the Hudson River; and the Croton watershed, located east of the Hudson River, see Figure 1. The first element of the system, the Croton Aqueduct, started operations in 1842.Through several updates and expansions, the present-day Croton system was in place by 1911, providing a potential maximum supply of about 15 m3/s (about 340 mgd). The system includes ten reservoirs and three controlled lakes. In the late 1800s, with the tremendous growth of the City, New York City water engineers began to look for additional sources. Between 1907 and 1929, the City acquired water rights and constructed a new 148 km (92 miles) Catskill aqueduct to convey water from the Ashokan Reservoir to the City. The dewatering of stable phosphatic clay suspensions generated from phosphate beneficiation in the central Florida is an issue of practical and theoretical importance. Because of its tiny particle size and surface charge, the phosphatic clay takes up to 20-30 years to settle in water and causes environmental, aesthetic, economic, and handling problems. An efficient and cost-effective dewatering/consolidation process for phosphatic clay is of great interest to the phosphate industry in Florida. In this paper, the consolidation and dewatering behavior of phosphatic clay was studied by use of anionic flocculants with and without sand addition. The effects of pH, initial polymer concentration, polymer dosage, polymer addition steps, and metal cations (K+, Ca2+, and Al3+) on the flocculation of phosphatic clay have been studied. Experimental results indicated that clay suspensions were well flocculated at pH 10.5 by DPW-1-1355 and Magnafloc 5250 flocculants acquired from Ciba Specialty Chemicals. Sand particles from phosphate flotation added to the clay slurry promoted flocculation and increased clay consolidation. K+ showed good performance to improve the flocculation characteristics by neutralizing clay surface charge. The adsorption mechanisms of flocculants on clay particles were also discussed in this paper.

Globalization was the key word for the mining industry during the 1990s, just as productivity was the key word of the 1980s. And globalization will remain the key word as the industry enters the 21st century, according to speakers at the Colorado MPD Meeting held in Colorado Springs, CO in May. The meeting, put on by the Colorado Section SME Minerals Processing Division, drew about 120 people to the Broadmoor Hotel. “Operating Globally” was the theme of the 49th annual conference. Speakers addressed the reasons why mining companies have limited their spending in the United States and have moved into Third World and developing nations.

Global warming is a political reality in the United States today. The actual impact of the continued utilization of fossil fuels is not known and is open to debate. However, the growing concern about the continued use of these fuels is problematic. There are technologies available to us today that would permit America to meet its future energy demand and not contribute to global warming. The inconvenient reality is that fossil fuels cannot completely be replaced with energy conservation and the use of wind, solar, hydroelectric, geothermal and nuclear energy. The connection between the greenhouse effect and global climate change was first identified by physicist John Tyndall in the 1860s. To prove the greenhouse hypothesis, Roger Revelle and his research team started measuring carbon dioxide concentrations in the earth?s atmosphere in the early 1960s (Becker, 2007). With the rising concern about global warming, scientists throughout the world have been obtaining surface and air temperature data. Scientists have also been comparing CO2 concentrations found in glaciers throughout the world with theorized annual temperatures. Data for both dates back 1,000 years. Armed with this data, many nations of the world and the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) have concluded that climate change is a reality. Longwall mining began within the Pittsburgh coalbed of Pennsylvania (PA) in the early 1970?s. Originally, longwall mine layouts were designed to fit within existing room-and-pillar operations, where panels were limited to that of typical production panels, e.g. a few hundred feet wide by a few thousand feet long. In these early designs, the gate entries were comprised of chain pillars similar to those found along main entry systems or within pillar recovery sections. The modern longwall mine has little in common with their 1970?s predecessors. Today the entire mine layout is designed around the longwall mining method. The longwall panels have grown to well over one thousand feet in width with lengths now measured in miles. In addition, development pillar sizes and shapes are matched to specific performance requirements.

The Gualcamayo Mine is located in the Andes Mountains north of San Juan, Argentina (Figure 1). A property of Yamana Gold Inc, it declared commercial production in July 2009 and has a total mineral reserve and resource base of approximately 88,000 kg of gold. Crushing operations for the open-pit mine are located in a 13,500 m3 underground cavern with a ceiling height of 22 m. More than 3,600 m of tunnels are used to access the cavern and convey the ore. The Project as described in this paper relates to the design and construction of the Main Cavern, Conveyor System Exit Tunnel, the Mechanical System Access Tunnels, and two 4.20 m diameter shafts (Ore Pass #1 and Ore Pass #2) as shown in Figure 2. [ ] Preliminary engineering for the Project was performed by Hatch Chile. Rizzo Associates Argentina, S.A., a division of Paul C. Rizzo Associates, Inc (Rizzo) was contracted to provide geomechanical and geotechnical support for the construction of the access tunnel system and geomechanical design and construction supervision for the cavern and shafts.

"Northwestern Pacific submarine seamounts are believed to be future marine mining areas of ferromanganese crusts, which contain hi-tech industrial metals, such as Co, Ni, Te, Ti, Pt, and REEs. The Takuyo No. 5 seamount is a member of the Cretaceous super-plume seamounts in the north Pacific, located within a Japanese EEZ (100 nm from the Minami- Torishima Is. or Marcus Is.), and only 300 nm away from the Japan’s Licensed area for exploration of Co-rich ferromanganese crusts under the ISA. This is an on-going program supported by independent academic communities but not a state-run program or managed by private funding.We have observed, sampled, measured, and analyzed the occurrences, distribution, physical properties, and microbiological environments at a selected flat topped seamount named Takuyo No.5 as a model area for scientific study of ferromanganese crusts within the Japanese EEZ. We then characterized crust structures, composition, age, and growth history, resulting in an understanding of the overall nature and distribution of these deposits from wide range of areas, water depths and geological environments. The study started with a ROV (Hyper-Dolphin 3K of JAMSTEC) exploration jointly with universities and national institutions (Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology, Japan Oil, Gas, and Metal Exploration Corporation, and Geological Survey of Japan) in 2009 using marine geology vessels, remotely-operated vehicle, an oceanbottom drill machine, deep-tow TV camera, as well as conventional dredges and corers. We have been studying the topography, geology, nature of the bottom material of the seamounts using delicate sampling devices and measurement tools, and characterized the distribution patterns of the metal-rich ferromanganese deposits from chemical, mineralogical, and microbiological points of view."

Introduction Aggregate mining impacts on water resources are a source of concern to local governments. To evaluate those impacts, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources conducted a four-year study at three gravel pits (two alluvial and one beach-ridge) and five quarries (flat-lying Paleozoic limestone). This research provides the first comprehensive look at aggregate mining impacts on ground-water systems in Minnesota. The results will be used by government officials making permitting decisions about aggregate operations and by responsible owners of aggregate mines as they plan their operations to avoid conflicts with neighbors and with resources dependent on ground water and surface water. Natural aggregate (crushed stone, sand, and gravel) is a vital part of our economic infrastructure in Minnesota. Aggregate is used for road and bridge construction and in a variety of building materials. In 2003, the value of construction sand and gravel and crushed stone in Minnesota was approximately $245,000,000. As Minnesota’s economy continues to expand, the demand for aggregate will continue to grow. Sand and gravel pits are located in every county in Minnesota. In 1990, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, Division of Minerals (DNR Minerals), estimated the number of active and inactive operations at 1500 with the view that this number was likely too low. Quarries for mining limestone, dolomite, sandstone, and hard rock (granite and quartzite) are found in 34 counties. A 1990 DNR Minerals inventory found 165 active operations, 88 percent of which were limestone quarries (Nelson and others, 1990). That same inventory counted 1,367 inactive operations, 70 percent of which were limestone quarries. Aggregate mining is an extractive use of resources: mining alters the landscape and its natural hydrologic system. When a new pit or quarry is proposed or when an existing operation needs to expand, local governments and citizens typically have many questions about the impacts mining might have. Local governments, which are responsible for reviewing these operations, rarely have the budgets to hire experts to evaluate potential impacts of quarry and gravel pit proposals. The Minnesota Legislature’s Aggregate Resources Task Force identified that local government units (LGUs) often lack the expertise to assess ground-water models (Southwick and others, 2000).

Tarkwa Gold Mine is located in south western Ghana, and is majority owned and operated by Gold Fields Ghana Limited. The Tarkwa CIL plant utilises a single low aspect 27' x 42' 14MW dual pinion drive SAG mill designed to mill 4.2mtpa (525tph). The plant was designed and constructed in a manner that would facilitate its expansion to 8.4mtpa (1,050tph). Since the plant was commissioned in September 2004, the SAG mill has consistently exceeded its nameplate throughput by up to 25%. Through the installation of a 26? x 36? 14MW dual pinion drive Ball mill along with additional upstream and downstream equipment, the plant will now be expanded to 12mtpa (1,500tph). This paper endeavours to outline the process and engineering design challenges along with the future construction challenges of the expansion in the midst of a fully operational plant.

"Ferromanganese crusts contain hydrous Mn and Fe oxides as main metal compounds together with some economically interesting minor elements such as Co, Ni, Ti and Cu and trace metals such as Mo, W, Nb, Te, Ga, Pt, and REEs. Some of these metals or semimetals have a great future potential as innovative high-technology constituents. All of them are highly enriched in the crusts compared to seawater composition.The Mn in the crusts mainly originates from the O2 - minimum zone in the oceanic water column. The agent for Mn2+ oxidation is dissolved oxygen, transported upwards from colder deep water layers by turbulent eddy diffusion. The Mn itself descends from surface waters and is carried down to the O2-minimum zone by fecal pellet transport. In contrast, Fe is mainly supplied from carbonate dissolution of planktonic skeletons in the water column. These relationships result in the fact that the oceanic water depth strongly controls the metal composition of ferromanganese crusts: the Mn - group metals are more enriched in shallower water, whereas the concentration of the Fe - group metals increase with water depth. The REEs play a very important role with regard to the trace metal composition of the crusts: their concentrations increase with water depth mainly controlled by a decreasing Mn/Fe ratio.In seawater, REEs occur as carbonate complexes; preferably, the light rare earth elements (LREEs) form REECO3 +(aq) and the heavy Rare Earth Elements (HREEs) REE(CO3)2 (aq) complexes. The REEs are transition metals, their 6s orbital of the outermost shell is filled before the filling of lower 4f electron shells is completed, thus the configuration of the valence electrons is similar in all the REEs, and all REEs exhibit similar chemical behavior and exist, dominantly, as 3+ cations. The ionic radius decreases progressively from La3+ (1.18 Å) to Lu3+ (0.97 Å), this phenomenon is called "lanthanide contraction". Due to the fact that REEs in seawater form cationic and anionic carbonate complexes, the two main hydrogenetic constituents, hydrous !-MnO2 and Fe-oxyhydroxide, fractionate the group of REEs by surface absorption processes. According to the pHZPC-concept the ?- MnO2 phase has an electronegative surface, and Fe-oxyhydroxide a slightly positive surface charge at seawater pH. These relationships are the main reason for the observed REEs fractionation."
