The British Solomon Islands Protectorate continued developmental work on bauxite deposits on the Islands of Rennell and Vaghena. A feasibility study was completed by Mitsui Mining & Smelting Co., Ltd., and Pacific Aluminum Ltd. (a subsidiary of Conzinc Riotinto of Australia Ltd,), and negotiations with the Government were in progress. The Government will receive a 25% share if the project is realized. It was estimated that the Islands contain 60 million tons of bauxite with an alumina content of 45% to 50%.

Results of studies of reservoir and wax-precipitation temperatures relating to wax deposition in the reservoir of the Bradford oil field are presented in this report. During 1949 and 1950 Bureau of Mines engineers made temperature measurements in 42 wells, which indicate that the Bradford Third-sand temperatures range from 59.7° F., at 1,150 feet, to 71.9° F., at 2,040 feet. Reservoir temperatures measured at the same depths in newly drilled wells and oil-producing wells differed as much as 4.5u F. Injection-well temperatures measured during water injection showed that the temperature of the water entering the sand was 11.5° F. lower than reservoir temperatures before injection. The cooling in the formation resulting froth the injection of low-temperature water was 11.5° F. in the vicinity of the injection-well bore, and a maximum of 2.1° F. 200 feet from the injection well. Sand temperature, after 5 months of water injection, was reduced 1.5° F. 90 feet from water-injection wells. The temperature at which wax begins to precipitate from solution in crude oil was determined at atmospheric pressure for 26 samples and ranged from 51° to 67° F. Oil samples from wells producing no water had wax-precipitation temperatures ranging from 51° to 58° F. and wax contents from 2.20 to 2.97 weight percent, whereas the samples from wells producing water and oil had wax precipitation temperatures ranging from 580 to 67° F. and wax contents from 2.57 to 3.42 weight percent .

The Bureau of Mines analyzed the cycle of secondary gold to determine the quantity of gold not being recovered from scrap, and to identify areas for research to increase the supply of gold from scrap. Secondary gold in 1967 was estimated to be 2.4 million troy ounces; this excludes secondary gold which is recycled within consuming plants. Firms contacted included consumers using about 41 percent of the gold in 1967, And refiners that recovered about 90 percent of the secondary gold. Results of the study indicate that loss of gold is small, and refiners and consumers are accelerating programs designed to reduce recovery costs. With the increasing generation of low-grade industrial scrap, research is needed to improve present recovery techniques and to develop methods to accelerate the flow of secondary gold back to supply.

A demonstrated reserve base (DRB) of bituminous coal suitable for cokemaking has been estimated based on the latest published information on U.S. coal reserves. Bureau of Mines analyses of raw coalbed samples were used to classify the coals as low-, medium-, and high-volatile bituminous and grade them as premium, marginal, and latent coking coals. Coal rank was used as the basis for identifying coking coals, and ash and sulfur content were used to determine coking coal grade. The demonstrated reserve base of coking coal for the entire United States is 162.67 billion tons. However, only 18.96 billion tons are premium (metallurgical) grade, and between 80 and 99 percent occurs in the Eastern States. The demonstrated reserve base of marginal-grade coking coal is 31.3 billion tons; more than half the marginal reserve base is in the Eastern States, and most of the medium- and low-volatile marginal coals are in the Eastern States. The Eastern and Midwestern States contain most of the latent-grade DRB of 112.4 billion tons; most (106.6 billion tons) is high-volatile coal, and 98 percent of the medium- and low-volatile latent coals occur in the Eastern States. Based on the worst assumption, which assumes that only premium-grade coals are used for cokemaking, the DRB for high-volatile coal would suffice for 127 years, the medium-volatile coal for 80 years, and the low-volatile coal for 83 years.

The general or macroclimate of the study sites in western North Dakota is characterized by rapid and sometimes extreme daily and day-to-day temperature fluctuations, rainfall patterns which are erratic in spatial and temporal distribution and intensity, generally low relative humidity, plentiful sunshine, nearly continuous air movement, and a relatively short frost-free period. Of particular relevance to plant growth and productivity is the mosaic of microclimates: these microclimates are affected by landform (convex and concave surfaces); exposure; slope angle, length and aspect; soil color, texture and surface cover (litter), and vegetation cover. The most critical plant growth governing factor in this region is available water. It is determined principally by water input (precipitation) and water loss (evapotranspiration) which is increased by high temperatures, wind, and poor litter and vegetation cover. While spring and fall precipitation is generally gentle and soil-soaking summer rains frequently come in the form of intensive, soil-washing, localized convective thunderstorms of short duration. Due to the convective nature of these storms, summer rainfall is particularly affected by regional topography; southwest slopes and crests often receive more rainfall since these storms usually move in a northeasterly direction. The water loss due to runoff and consequent soil erosion arc major problems resulting from such "cloudbursts". Previous fall precipitation (September - October) when added to current seasonal precipitation (March - August) was found to be significantly correlated (r-.93) with plant production. Winter precipitation (snowfall) is relatively light as the prevailing weather is dominated by dry polar air masses from the north. The nearly continuous wind is responsible for removing snow from open exposures and depositing it in depressions and windbreaks. Although the winter precipitation is not a large component of the total annual precipitation, conservation of that which does occur would contribute to plant production during the following growing season. Generally clear skies over the region facilitate receipt of abundant sunshine at the earth's surface. While good for early season soil warming and plant photosynthesis, this abundant sunshine coupled with long days and nearly continuous wind is responsible for evapotranspiration exceeding precipitation by an average of six inches between June' and September. On a local (micro) scale, the water deficit is most severe on the southern exposures which receive the most direct (most effective) solar radiation and therefore are warmer than other exposures. On a broader scale, it was found that ambient temperature extremes were slightly but significantly greater in the town of Beulah in the Knife River Valley than at the upland test sites, This may have been due to the difference in topography and/or the "urban heat island" effect. It is known that air temperatures in large cities may be 2° to 4°C higher than that of the surrounding countryside. It is also well known that basins, depressions or valleys are sinks for cold air masses and are often subject to frosts not occurring on adjacent upland sites.

In 1987, the U.S. Bureau of Mines began a study of the 4.0 million acre Toiyabe National Forest located in eastern California and western Nevada. This report is a compilation of published, company, and field data for part of the Paradise Range, Nevada. The information is intended to aid the U.S. Forest Service in their long range management of minerals and augment the USBM data base. The Paradise Range study area, located 60 air mi northwest of Tonopah, NV, encompasses about 100,000 acres of which approximately 71,000 are administered by the USFS. The area is in the Basin and Range Province and consists of an east tilted block of sedimentary, metamorphic, and volcanic rocks which have been intruded by granitic rocks. Three major mining districts, the Ellsworth, Gabbs, and Fairplay are in, or extend into the study area. The earliest recorded mining activity occurred in the Ellsworth district in the early 1860's. Commodities produced from the study area include gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, mercury, tungsten, iron ore, magnesite, and brucite. The Phelps Stokes Iron mine has produced about 1.1 million tons of iron ore, the Baxter-Hancock mine has produced over 10,000 stu WO3, and the Gabbs Brucite-Magnesite mine has produced millions of tons of brucite and magnesite. Numerous other mines have produced, but quantities are relatively small. According to company information the Gabbs mine, currently producing, has brucite-magnesite reserves that will last at least 50 years at current mining rates. One hundred thirty one million tons of identified copper-molybdenum resources exist at the B.C. Springs prospect according to company information, but molybdic oxide (Mo03) prices would need to double or triple from the current $3.00-3.10 per lb before mining of the deposit would be economical. Most company exploration activity in the study area is now focussed on precious metals. Active, or recently active mining claims appear to cover more than one-half of the 100,000 acres studied.

This paper discusses the results of two recent case studies in which high-tech prototype instruments were used. The first case study describes the results of a ground-based hyperspectral imaging tool used to map the geology of an open-pit mine highwall. The second case study outlines the use of interferometric synthetic aperture radar and how this type of radar can be used in a variety of geotechnical situations. These case studies are part of an on-going research project at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH) Spokane Research Laboratory. The project objective is to implement engineering controls and design methods in order to reduce the number of injuries and fatalities associated with slope failures at mining operations. Project personnel are hopeful that these new developments in technology will lead to better geotechnical monitoring and design in slope stability and other important areas of rock mechanics.

It is interesting to study the noise standards that have been promulgated in the US over the last decade or so. These regulations are likely to have long-lasting impact. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Hearing Conservation Amendment (March 1983) continues to have influence not only in the workplace but in the debate over new regulations. Both the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulatory preamble documents state the desire to be consistent with OSHA. An examination of Table 1, which compares the major components of the three regulations and the 1998 NIOSH “best practices” criteria, depicts the extent to which that intent is met. There has been some regulatory activity in the last decade which may give some hope for evolution and updating based on the wealth of science that has occurred during the last quarter of a century since the OSHA regulation was enacted. However there has also been some “back-sliding” toward more lenient standards. The MSHA noise standard made regulatory progress in September 2000 by emphasizing engineering and administrative controls, followed by personal protective equipment, in the hierarchy of noise intervention. MSHA’s requirement for technician certification (today only available from CAOHC) strengthened the training requirements for audiometric testing in hearing conservation programs and MSHA also added the requirement of dual hearing protection at 105 dB TWA. There were many subtle differences between OSHA and MSHA based on comments and a desire to clarify some of the vague aspects of the OSHA noise standard, and meet the needs of the regulated mining industry. One example pertains to the ceiling for exposures. OSHA says, “no exposures >115 dBA,” which is interpreted to mean no unprotected exposures above that level, giving credit for the assumed effectiveness of hearing conservation programs, hearing protection devices and administrative and engineering controls. MSHA specified that a “P” code1 violation be issued for any protected or unprotected exposures >115 dBA. The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) noise standard for railroad operating employees, which went The Modern Evolution of Hearing Conservation Regulationsinto effect February 26, 2007, was expressly based on the OSHA standard but also uses MSHA for comparison. The preamble states that the FRA defers to OSHA as the “primary regulator of noise in the workplace,” but also acknowledges the need for some departure from the OSHA regulation (FRA Preamble II.B). As an example, FRA requires testing at 8000 Hz “because it will allow employers to identify hearing loss sooner.” The FRA rejected MSHA’s hierarchy of noise controls in favor of requiring specific engineering interventions and focusing on appropriate hearing protection which would still allow communication and audibility, and identification of excessive noise through employee-filed “excessive noise reports.”2 Where OSHA has no specific mandate requiring employees to take advantage of the employer-paid audiogram, it has been traditionally a condition of employment and is generally accepted that OSHA-covered workers require an annual audiogram. MSHA addressed this issue in its preamble; however, they made no significant change. MSHA employers are required to offer annual audiograms but MSHA stopped short of requiring employees to comply with annual audiometric testing. The United States Bureau of Mines (USBM) awarded a contract to Foster-Miller, Inc. to develop guidelines for the storage and use of Self-Contained Self-Rescuers (SCSRs) in underground non-coal mines. An SCSR is a device capable of supplying, in an emergency, one hour of self-contained oxygen (no breathing of mine air). The information and recommendations in this report were developed primarily from three sources: discussions with mine representatives (including management, labor, and government), site visits in underground mines I and a detailed analysis of every reported non-coal accident which produced d hazardous atmosphere during the 5-year period 1976-1980 -plus ten other major incidents from prior years. Volume IV has three major sections: Recommendations and Discussion (Section 2), Analysis of Mine Accidents (Appendix A), and a Summary of Discussions with Mine Representatives (Appendix B).

The rapid determination of uranium in ores by radiometric means was investigated by the Bureau of Mines. Among the various procedures and schemes tested, two showed most promise. They were the ratio scheme developed in the Bureau's Tucson, Ariz., laboratory and the equilibrium method developed by the Canadian Department of Mines and Technical Surveys. The ratio method is a simple, empirical procedure for classifying the state of equilibrium in ores by measuring their radioactivity by means of a Geiger-Muller counter under three different conditions, using filters. The principal merit of the method is in providing a clue as to the reliability of equivalent uranium determinations.

"The measured strength of an explosive depends to a certain extent on which it is determined. An earlier investigation showed the relative propulsive strength of dynamites as determined in one type of apparatus, ballistic pendulum.4 The aim of this paper is to precept strength data on these same dynamites determined in another type of apparatus, the Trauzl lead block, and to compare the results with those of the ballistic pendulum. Trauzl lead block have been in use many years for the determination of thy strength of explosives, under moderate confinement.5 The common practice is to shoot 10 grams of explosive, in tinfoil wrapper,- and then to measure the volume of the cavity produced by the shot. The volume of the original borehole is deducted from the gross expansion and sometimes a correction is made for the expansion produced by the detonator. Dry sand is used for stemming the charge.It has been found that the expansion in Trauzl blocks is not strictly proportional to the charge. Naoum5 believed that for scientific accuracy the charge should undoubtedly be regulated to give the same average expansion for each sample tested, but for expansions of 200 to 400 cubic, centimeters the deviation from proportionality is not sufficient to give results appreciably in error.Neubner7 found that the proportionality curve is tangent to the charge-expansion curve at about 300 cubic centimeters expansion, provided that no deductions are made for the volume of the original borehole or the effect of the detonator; the total or gross expansion is proportional to the charge between expansions of 250 to 350 cubic centimeters without serious error."

A study of the ignition of non-fire-resistant hydraulic fluid sprays was conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. Both an open flame and a hot steel surface were used as the external heat sources. With the open flame as the heat source, the minimum oil temperature and minimum spray nozzle pressure that resulted in an ignition were measured. The effects of the distance between the open flame and the nozzle and the nozzle orifice diameter on the ignitability of the hydraulic fluid sprays were examined. With the hot surface as the heat source, the minimum surface ignition temperature was determined. The degree of oil atomization and the relative direction of oil injection with respect to the hot surface are discussed. The ignition of oil sprays from the impingement of oil jets onto a vertical surface was also investigated. Finally, the results are compared with those obtained for fire-resistant hydraulic fluids. As part of its mission to develop technology that will help increase the supply of critical and strategic minerals from domestic resources, the Bureau of Mines has investigated methods for beneficiating platinum-group metal ores from the Stillwater complex, Montana. This report presents the result of a bench-scale study employing froth flotation to recover a sulfide concentrate containing platinum-palladium values from a mineralized gabbro. Best results were obtained with a flotation scheme utilizing a mercaptobenzothiazone collector and sulfuric acid. Rougher concentrates containing approximately 11 oz Pt-Pd/ton and 90 pct of the metal values in the ore were obtained. Subsequently, cleaner concentrates containing approximately 26 oz Pt-Pd/ton and between 80 to 85 pct of the Pt-Pd values in the ore were prepared.

The information pertains to metal mines, as well as ore-dressing plants and primary nonferrous smelters, refineries and reduction plants, and their auxiliary works. These data are voluntarily submitted annually to the Bureau of Mines by the operators, and contribute greatly toward the promotion of safety in the mineral industries. The data presented are classified according to the principal mineral produced and include information on copper, iron, lead-zinc, gold-silver lode, gold placer, uranium-vanadium and miscellaneous metals. A breakdown of miscellaneous metals by commodities is shown in table 19, page 41. The data also relate to workers engaged in production, exploration, development, construction, and maintenance and repair work, as well as supervisory personnel and office-workers at the mine or plant site. U.S. Bureau of Mines personnel examined mines, prospects, and mineralized areas to determine mineral resources and resource potential in and adjacent to the North fork Smith RARE II study area. Most mineral resources identified in this area are in laterites, highly-weathered residual soil zones. In the RARE II area, resources of nickel, cobalt, chromium, and magnesium were identified at 15 laterite properties and chromium resources at one chromite mine. Other commodities include copper, gold, silver, and mercury (fig. 1). Approximately 1,100 lode and 1,200 placer claims have been located in or adjacent to the area. Most placer claims are for literites. There are no patented claims or mineral leases. Forty laterite deposits on 15 ,properties within the RARE II area (fig. 2) contain about 16 million tons of identified marginal reserves and subeconomic resources containing nickel, cobalt, chromium, an magnesium (table 1). Most deposits have keen explored and are currently claimed. California Nickel Corporation is developing laterites on Gasguet Mountain, within and adjacent to the southeastern and western parts of the study area. If this project proceeds to production, a laterite processing plant on Gasquet Mountain would enhance the minability of other deposits in the study area. The Climax, PFM, DF, and Stone Corral properties (fig. 1, nos. 1, 6, 9, and 23) have deposits of sufficient tonnage and grade to attract mining interest; resources at these properties are in and adjacent to the RARE II area.

"INTRODUCTION This is the fourth report of investigations dealing with the cooperative tests between the Bureau of Mines and industry on the use of electrolytic manganese in steelmaking. The first report dealt with the use of electrolytic manganese in the manufacture of stainless steel 3/ the second with its use in acid electric steel practice, 4/ and the third with its use in low-carbon basic open-hearth steelmaking. 2/ A résumé of those investigations E7 appeared in the magazine STEEL. 5/ The present report deals with the use of electrolytic manganese in the manufacture of four types of stainless steel and the new Timken 16-25-6 alloy. The Bureau of Mines supplied The Timken Roller Bearing Co. with 62,000 pounds of electrolytic manganese for use in the tests.The electrolytic manganese was produced at the Bureau of Mines pilot plant, Boulder City, Nev., by the process developed by the Bureau and described in Bulletin 463, Operation of Electrolytic Manganese Pilot Plant, Boulder City, Nev., by J. H. Jacobs. J. W. Hunter, W. H. Yarroll, P. E. Churchward, R. G. Knickerbocker, R. W. Lewis, H.A. Heller, and J. H. Linck. The workcarried out under the direction of R. S. This report summarizes studies of 55 Idaho national forest roadless areas completed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) in the period 1966-1992. These roadless areas have been recommended for addition to the National Wilderness Preservation System, proposed as special management areas, or otherwise recommended for study by the U.S. Forest Service or the Idaho congressional delegation. The Bureau of Mines' studies indicate which parts of the roadless areas contain mineral resources. They also show where mining and prospecting are likely to occur in the future, where mineral production has occurred in the past, and where abandoned mine workings (possible hazards) would be encountered. The number of mine and prospect workings found are a measure not only of surface disturbance, but of areas not wilderness in character.

A pilot program was undertaken to evaluate a process developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to recover nickel, cobalt, copper and chromite from domestic nickel laterite resources. An existing five ton per day pilot plant was modified to accommodate treatment of laterite by the Bureau process, which employs reductive roasting, ammoniacal sulfate leaching, solvent extraction, and electrowinning to extract, separate, and recover nickel, cobalt and copper as high purity cathode products. Three distinct types of laterite i.e., limonite, saprolite and a mixture of limonite/saprolite were processed through the plant during three operating campaigns. Nickel cathode was made during all three campaigns, while cobalt cathode and chromite concentrate were recovered only during processing of limonite. Leach extraction of nickel and cobalt averaged 83 and 67 percent, respectively, while the overall recovery was 80 and 63 percent for nickel and cobalt, respectively. Initially, over-reduction of iron in the saprolitic calcine contributed to poor settling of the leached solids. This problem was overcome by careful control of reducing conditions and flocculant addition. An economic feasibility study was made for a 5000 TPD grassroots laterite processing facility scaled-up from pilot plant data. Estimated (+ 30) percent capital cost for a Nine and plant is $367 million with an estimated $103 million per year operating cost. The study indicates that low-grade domestic laterite may he processed with marginal profit- ability.
