The AngloGold Ashanti - Cuiaba mine sought innovative approaches to minimize lateral development and stope extraction time while maintaining optimal gold recovery and minimizing dilution. The stope 8GAL EXT 30 was selected as a case study. Traditionally, conventional blasting methods in such a scenario would necessitate either a single mass blast or slot development at each end of the stope. These methods typically compromise recovery and dilution or increase development time and risk. Additionally, conventional wired detonators require workers to re-enter the stope between blasts to load blastholes and connect detonators. The wireless initiation system offers a solution by initiating blastholes using magnetic induction signals that can penetrate rock, air, and water. This technology allows a pre-charged stope to be mined without requiring workers to re-enter the area between blasts to charge and connect blastholes. Engineers from Orica and AngloGold Ashanti designed a new extraction sequence utilizing the wireless initiation system. The process began with the opening of one end of the stope using a conventional slot and wired electronic detonators. Subsequently, pre-loaded rings were fired in three blasts to extract the opposite end and the intersection. The 8GAL EXT 30 stope was successfully mined using this technology enabled method. Each blast was meticulously monitored, and the stope void was scanned to assess blast performance. The results demonstrated a 4.6% improvement in recovery and a 16% reduction in dilution compared to the initial plan, and reduced exposure of people to hazardous locations in the stope. These results represent an additional value of USD 200k, gained from implementing wireless initiation to enable this particular blasting schedule.

A European Directive requires that an explosive which is sold or transported within Europe must meet certain essential safety requirements from 1 January 2003. The assessment and certification of such an explosive is undertaken by an Explosives Notified Body and if the explosive meets the requirements a certificate is issued that allows the affixation of a CE mark. The presence of a CE mark ensures the product free access to European markets. The paper examines the requirements of the Directive, identifies those explosives that come within its scope, considers the role of an Explosives Notified Body, and explains the process of applying for certification.

Safety concern is one of the most important parameters in the design of building demolition by explosive blasting. Accidents were sometimes reported due to the flying chips of fragmented materials in building demolition work in urban area. Laboratory experiments were performed to investigate the failure behavior of reinforced concrete pillars under blast loading and to develop an effective protection technique. Sixteen reinforced concrete pillars were constructed with two sizes: 450×450×1800 mm and 600×300×1800 mm. The failure behavior and the flying chip velocities were observed by means of a high-speed camera. Protection scheme was designed and the effects of several protection materials were investigated. Two kinds of non-woven fabrics and wire net were tested as protection materials. The results showed that reinforcing bar was one of the important factors to determine specific charges, and that mesh size of wire net and tied-up method affected the protection of flying chips. Control of gas effects is also a key to the control of flying chips. It was recommended to use both wire net and nonwoven fabrics as primary and secondary protection materials. Such protection scheme was successfully applied to the explosive demolition of 16 and 17-story apartment buildings.

Correct slope adhesion is related to the conformity of the slope’s real geometry to slope planning. It is very important in mining because slope design has economic and safety implications. Slope design conditions can interfere with mining waste and ore proportion. Without a correct wall, the development of the mine can be hindered, which can reduce the amount of ore available. Furthermore, correct slope design reduces the possibility of melting and allows traffic with equipment and people in the mine. However, defining the wall is a more complex work as the characteristics of the rock require the use of blasting techniques. Therefore, Enaex Mining Technical Solutions (EMTS), in partnership with the engineering team at the Chapada Mine, at Lundin Mining, has developed this study in order to increase slope adhesion. The basis of this study is a near-field vibration test, which enables the creation of vibration attenuation law, and a seed wave damage model has allowed the characterization of the rock present at the Chapada Mine. Then, we could compare the model result to the real slope adhesion achieved with the buffer technique used in the mine. Therefore, it was possible to relate the real result to the model result.

This paper presents some of the results obtained during the research work about the use of technologies and digital transformation in the process of rock drilling in open pit mines. The use of automation presents itself as a disruptive factor and a driver of improvements that provide sustainability in rock drilling. Seven main operational parameters were utilized to combine measurement while the drilling (MWD) with other information generated by the equipment during hole drilling, in six different lithologies in an iron mine, located in the central region of Minas Gerais in Brazil. Adjustments and corrections were made to the data collected in order to minimize external influences other than the rock itself, to ensure the effectiveness of the analyses. Finally, we sought to compare the performance of the drilling process in manual and automatic operation modes. Thus, making it possible to show the efficiency and impact on the sustainability of rock drilling operations in open pit mines.

Because of its safety, being easy to handle, relatively inexpensive and containing a lot of energy, ANFO is the most popular and widely used explosive in Turkey as well as other countries in the world. According to change dated May 14th 1999 on the regulation 87/12028 related with explosives, blasters are not allowed to mix ammonium nitrate and fuel oil in the tield to make ANFO. Instead of this, they have been forced to use the ready ANFO prepared by explosive producer firms. As a result of this obligation, the use of technical nitrate for agricultural purpose and mixing AN and fuel oil in unsuitable conditions have been prevented. Indeed, wrong mixture means waste of energy and money.

Dynamic pressures during blasting can affect performances of both electronic and non-electronic detonators. Boreholes can develop tremendous amount of pressures during blasting. The effect of such elevated pressure especially during electronic delay countdown is probably more acute in electronic detonators. Measuring the pressures during blasting can aid to understand the relationship between magnitude of the pressure developed and the multitude of blasting conditions.

In recent years significant advances have been made in chemical processing technology. In particular, process intensification using micro-technology has had some success in changing and improving chemical processes including mixing. Process Intensification is the miniaturization of unit operations and processes whereby a smaller compact piece of equipment takes the place of a larger one at the same given capacity or mass flow rate. This paper summarizes research into the application of the technology for manufacture of high internal phase water in oil ammonium nitrate emulsions (ANE’s) at low energy cost and with very low oil/fuel blend content. The emulsions can be used as precursors for preparation of explosives. The quality of the emulsion prepared was assessed through droplet and crystal analysis and compared with that of emulsions made by conventional large scale jet mixing technology.

While controlling fly rock and ground vibration in quarrying in the neighborhood of a residential area, producing good fragmentation and keeping different grades of material separated in a muckpile are important in maintaining the productivity of quality aggregates. This paper describes a single row production blast for the study of fragmentation and displacement in the grade control carried out at a quarry of Barrett Paving Materials Inc. in Sylvania, Ohio. Digital video imaging was used to monitor the blast-induced motion of the bench face as input to the DMC_Blast (Distinct Motion Code), for the analysis of the formation of the muckpile. The actual digitized blast video and the DMC_Blast simulation are compared. The displacement and mixing of all the inter-bedded limestone layers are made visible in the simulated cross-section of the muckpile. The apparent fragmentation analysed with PowerSieve is also discussed.

"The urgent need for improvements in the control and mitigation of environmental and social conditions associated with the extraction and processing of raw materials is increasingly a demand imposed by legal entities and institutions. Therefore, this present article proposes an improvement of the estimation in the magnitude of the vibrations resulting from rock blasting methodologies in the surrounding areas,incorporating the heterogeneity caused by uncontrollable parameters, such as geological andgeotechnical characteristics. This methodology combines the use of empirical vibration attenuation lawscommonly known and with terrain discretization techniques using Voronoi’s decomposition. For thevalidation assessment of this methodology, the data set collected and compiled is composed by 87 vibration measures collected in 16 sample points in one area of study of which 2/3 of the samples were used to create the model and 1/3 for the validation. Using normality tests for statistical residue analysis,it is possible to infer that this present model has null residual mean, as well as a smaller sum of residualerrors. Comparing the methodology present in this paper with the procedures executed nowadays, areduction of the errors associated with the estimation is obvious, highlighting a better characterization of the behavior of the vibrations associated with rock blasting."

Selection of delay times to optimize fragmentation has been a controversial topic among researchers and blasting practitioners. This paper reviews previous experimental information and presents the results of new tests conducted in small blocks constructed using a commercial grout. The effect of the delay on the average fragment size, coarse fragmentation and uniformity of fragmentation is discussed. Fragmentation was coarser at extremely short or extremely long delays, while a fairly constant average size was obtained at a variety of intermediate delays. Uniformity, defined as the slope of the fragmentation distribution through the average fragment size, was poor at short and very long delays and relatively constant at the intermediate delays. Some tests attempted to minimize the effect of gas penetration by lining the boreholes with copper tubes. When this was the case average fragmentation changed marginally, while uniformity was significantly affected by delay and was typically smaller than in the unlined tests.

Donna Summer wrote and recorded a song in 1983 with Michael Omartian called, “She Works Hard for the Money.” The song was inspired by her encounter with an exhausted rest room attendant, Onetta Johnson, who is mentioned in the song by name, and featured on the album’s back cover. ISEE President James Daley, in the May/June 2019 in The Journal of Explosives Engineering discussed the Six Pillars related to the ISEE. We will use the Internal Processes pillar to frame this discussion. The Internal Process Pillar includes five separate sub-committees – we will see how this concept applies to both ATF Explosives record-keeping compliance and business process compliance in general. We will discuss electronic and paper record keeping, what works and what doesn’t. We’ll review record keeping in light of those five sub-committees: Audit, Awards, Constitution, Ethics and Planning. You’ll come away with concrete steps you can use to improve your record keeping processes. This project will report findings on the establishment of a new surface test site at the Colorado School of Mines Edgar Mine. Concerns over the blast effects on site neighbors prompted the study to be conducted. The current maximum charge weight of 20-lb was studied to ensure that all environmental effects were within the range prescribed by state and federal regulations. Geophone locations were surveyed using GPS and monitored using Instantel Minimate Plus instruments. Distances and orientation of measurement sites to the test site were varied according to the local geography and geology. Weather conditions were also observed and recorded during all tests. Neighbor complaints were recorded and taken into account during analysis. Current results show that the current charge limit results in a safety factor of over 200 for all blasting activities at the site. Data collection is ongoing and a review is to be conducted annually. The Stave Falls Project of BC Hydro, situated 65km east of Vancouver, BC, Canada, involved the construction of a new two-unit 9OMW hydro-electric facility to replace an existing powerhouse. The final phase of the intake excavation consisted of a plug blast to break the channel through into Stave Lake. The plug consisted of a rock and till wall topped with a fill cofferdam, about 51m wide and between 8 and 12m high. Total rock volume was approximately 2600m3, overlaid with about 4600m3 of till/fill. This paper describes the methodology and practical techniques used in planning and loading the blast, and the precautions taken to protect the new and existing structures and equipment. Blasting of the plug by the normal method using downholes would have required the placing of extra fill and much drilling through casing, so the contractor made the decision to drill horizontal holes from the dry, downstream side. Because of poor rock conditions, all 183 holes had to be drilled oversize at 3.5” dia. and fitted with 2.5” id. plastic pipes to keep them open. Hole lengths ranged from 2.5 to 18rn, with a pattern of 1.5m spacing and l.Om burden (with the holes slightly fanned vertically). Because of significant water exposure, a film-packaged emulsion explosive was used, placed using a pneumatic cartridge loader for maximum borehole compaction. The powder factor averaged 1.3kg/m3 (2.21bs/yd3, rock only). An initiation system of combination surface/downhole delay shocktube units was employed, with double and triple redundancy. The maximum number of holes firing in any 8ms window was limited to three (to minimize vibration), while the whole sequence was fully activated before the first hole fired. All shocktube connections were secured and covered over at the foot of the rockface before flooding the excavation downstream of the plug prior to the shot, To protect the powerhouse gates from hydraulic shock, all hole collars were grouted and an air curtain was provided. The blast was completely successful. A maximum vertical displacement of 6m was recorded, but no flyrock was evident. Readings for peak over-pressure and vibration were well below the allowed limits. Mucking proved to be easy, with fine fragmentation, full pull, and no tights.

As the first stage in the rulemaking process, MSHA prepared requirements for the approval and use of permissible explosives and blasting items in underground coal mines. These draft requirements known as "preproposals" were announced in the Federal Register in mid-1984. The draft requirements on the use of explosives were written as a revision to Title 30, Code of Federal Regulations, Part 75, Subpart N. The draft requirements for approval of permissible explosives including sheathed explosives for unconfined applications, approval of water stemming bags, approval of detonators and approval of blasting machines were prepared as Parts 15, 16, 17 and 25 respectively.

Electronic detonators have been commercially available to the mining industry worldwide for over ten years. It is estimated that total cumulative global sales will have reached 25 million units by the time of the Conference in February 2004. This is below 0.2% of all detonator types sold during this period. Perhaps 20 million will have been used underground in South African gold, diamond and platinum mines. These will have been produced by South African companies, in South Africa for South African customers. Here efforts have met with greater success and in 2003 fully 5 million, or 3% of local detonators sold, could be of an electronic type. However, it is estimated that about US$7.00 (R50.00) has been expended on R & D, manufacturing facilities and marketing, for each unit so far sold. Large sums of money continue to be spent. Despite the apparent success in South Africa, is it justified? Electronic initiation systems have not produced significant technical benefits to the end-user underground nor corporate profits to the supplier. Some doubt they ever will (even from the large surface operations where the price per unit is much higher). A conclusion might be that they have failed. In 1998 Smit and Pistorius wrote a paper titled “Implications of the Dominant Design in Electronic Initiation Systems in the South African Mining Industry”. This ISEE paper seeks to summarise and review the conclusions of the earlier work. These were: that a dominant design had not yet emerged; the type of connector and the way in which detonators are connected and programmed would be a strong determinant influencing the development of a “winning” product; technical aspects rarely solely determine which becomes the dominant design (marketing, social and economic factors often have a strong influence); electronic initiation systems were an emerging technology for the underground gold mining industry in South Africa and because it was under severe cost pressure the mines would look to them to raise productivity and hence profits; finally, as a dominant design begins to emerge, one could expect a number of players to exit from the industry.
