"The JKMRC researchers have been redeveloping the suite of breakage testing techniques to more realistically align with the breakage environment in comminution equipment. Computational modelling, especially with the DEM, has highlighted the modes of impact and contact, along with the energies of these interactions in a wide range of equipment. This has driven the need to match these modes in laboratory ore characterisation tests. The objective has been to build a continuum of breakage tests and associated models that span the required range of breakage forces and environments. The ore sample is subjected to a sequence of tests covering: abrasion (surface breakage) of angular through to smoothed particles; single particle impact from high energy single impact breakage down to low energy; incremental breakage covering 60 mm down to 50 µm particles; particle strength distribution; and bed breakage over a range of compression and energy input. These tests are suited to multi-component ores with a distribution of strengths. A modelling technique is also being developed to utilise primary breakage for modelling breakage under different types of confinement. This paper draws together these techniques, previously published by the authors, into a coherent whole. The suite of tests is approaching the point where a fixed set of tests can be used to model the performance of a full range of equipment, removing the need to conduct repeat ore characterisation tests for each different piece of equipment incorporated in a circuit design. This path should open up the application of different circuit configurations and novel equipment in comminution circuit design.1 INTRODUCTION Comminution modelling utilizes a wide range of ore characterisation techniques and methods to deal with the range of comminution equipment available for production use. In general, the tests have been designed to correlate with specific pieces of equipment, using calibration factors to provide the link between the small-scale test and industrial-scale performance. The majority of tests focus on estimating the power requirement of process equipment to achieve a desired throughput and grind size. Overall, this approach has achieved acceptable outcomes in the past, but the reality is that equipment sizing suffers from considerable uncertainty, in excess of ±20% is not uncommon. This uncertainty is covered by safety margins and automatic scaling factors in equipment selection. In striving to improve reliability, the industry tends to add more adjustment factors to the tests, and design margin rather than question the basic validity of the testing process. As the tests are often correlated to production equipment via carefully guarded databases, they are also locked into historic operating inefficiency, not providing direction or revealing opportunities to improve production efficiency in comminution equipment or circuits. Safe in the knowledge that they are achieving the expected production based on test work predictions, a site is unlikely to set their sights on reducing specific energy consumption by 10%."

Processing of phosphate ore sample was investigated for increasing phosphate content and reduction of its gangue minerals such as carbonates and silicates. Experimental designs were per-formed using Taguchi method. Different flotation methods were investigated for Moundon phosphate ore sample and three methods were used as follow: direct cellophane flotation, reverse calcite flotation and reverse quartz flotation. Because of the sensitivity of cellophane flotation to slime content, prior desliming was carried out before the experiments. Direct flotation experiments carried out and a concentrate contained 23.80% P2O5, 6.88% SiO2 and 72.33% recovery were produced. The achieved P2O5 content in the produced concentrate from reverse flotation of calcite was 26.44% and the recovery was 82.56%. The concentrate products obtained at optimum conditions by direct flotation of phosphate and indirect flotation of calcite were subjected to indirect flotation of calcite and direct flotation of appetite and final concentrates with P2O5 grade of the order of 24.19% and 26.96% were obtained, respectively. It was concluded that one stage direct flotation is unavoidable to achieve a product with low SiO2 content.

The large-scale 8.53m×3.96m (28?×13? F/F) SAG mills was first applied in Donggua Hill Copper Mine which processes 13,000 tons ore per day. The crushing and grinding circuit went into operation in the Donggua Hill plant in October 2004. However, at the beginning, the productivity of grinding only reached 58% of the capacity expected and some indexes of the crushing and milling circuit didn?t meet the requirements. Especially, the total load of the 8.53m×3.96m (28?×13? F/F) SAG mills was up to 34%~41% (25%~30% designed)and some hard rocks with the size of 25~70mm, which can?t be treated as a medium or even would be crushed and make larger ores or steal balls necessary, were seriously accumulated in the SAG mills. Consequently, they occupied the effective mill volume which in turn reduced the efficiency of the SAG mills and increase the energy consumption. In order to solve the problem of accumulation in the SAG mill and increase its productivity, some measures were taken, such as passing more hard pebble through the grate at mill dis-charging end, changing the type of steal balls and so on. And the results showed that these measures functioned well and had good effects, which is that the filling percentage of the SAG mills has been reduced to 26%~29% from 34%~41% with the composition of particle sizes improved a lot and the productivity increased by 77.4% reaching up to 13,380 tons per day.

According to the Darcy?s law, filtration rate should increase with increasing pressure drop (?P) across a filter cake. In centrifugal filtration, ?P is created by the free water present on the surface of a filter cake. Thus, ?P can become negative when the free water disappears from the cake surface, which makes it difficult to achieve low cake moistures. In the present work, we have developed methods of overcoming this problem by either increasing the air pressure inside or applying vacuum outside a centrifuge. Laboratory dewatering tests conducted using these provisions showed that the moistures of various minerals and coal fines can be reduced to the level that can obviate the need for thermal drying. The new concept has been successfully tested both at pilot- and full-scale, which lead to commercial deployment through Decanter Machine, Inc., under the trade name Centribaric® centrifuge. This paper presents an arcuate magnetic separator to remove the grinding ball fragment directly from the mill discharge, which will cause wear to downstream processing equipment such as pump, hydro cyclones and pebble crusher. Furth more this type separator was applied in Wushan mine under China National Group Corporation in China. After months of operation, the equipment has been a success. "In many volcanogenic base metal deposits of Russia the gold is closely associated with copper sulphides and pyrite. The recovery of gold associated with pyrite is especially difficult problem.Investigations of gold chemical state and mineral forms in copper-zinc sulphide ores of Gay and Barsuchiy Log deposits in the Urals have been made using EPMA, optic image-analysis, XRA, SEM, thermo-electrical force measurements and selective gold leaching experiments.Two gold varieties are determined: 1) free native gold particles (from 5 µm up to 0,25-1,0 mm), which can be liberated after grinding of ore up to 0,074 µm and named “free gold”; 2)”invisible” gold, including finely disseminated native gold and chemically bound gold. The second variety can’t be disclosed during grinding. Free gold can be recovered by gravitation and flotation while the processing behaviour of “invisible” gold is determined by properties of gold-bearing sulphides: pyrite and chalcopyrite. According to results of diagnostic leaching experiments in ores of deposits mentioned above the part by weight of free gold reaches 70%, the part by weight of the ”invisible” gold is up to 20%. About 10% of gold is enclosed in quartz and acid-soluble minerals.Theoretically (taking into account gold distribution data) it’s may anticipate gold recovery by gravitation up to 60%. However after grinding up to 50-60% of class –0,074 mm only about 40% of gold passes into oversize product including 30% of free gold and 8% of ”invisible” one. It can be recovered by gravitation. Remaining free gold and ”invisible” gold can be extracted by flotation – 25% in total. Inevitable gold losses in tailings may reach 8-10%."

One of the basic processes of process engineering is the production of dense suspensions. The major two equipment of this task are the periodically operating propeller mixer, and the continuously operating mixer tank based on the flow principle. In the laboratory of the Department of Process Engineering at the University of Miskolc, laboratory scale experimental setups had been built of both types of mixers in the frame of the FKFP 0504/1999 signed research project, supported by the Hungarian Ministry of Education. By these experimental setups many systematical experimental series had been carried out by test materials of water as the dispersing media and sand, power plant fly ash and magnetite as the granular solids. On the basis of the literature and these experimental investigations, scale-up methods had been developed for both types of mixers for the determination of the main technical parameters of industrial size equipment.

"When improving a plant a mineral processing engineer would like to know the mineral composition distribution. In order to assess this distribution in particles, as compared to the corresponding distribution in particle sections, a procedure needs to be applied to the observed particle sections. Such a procedure is called a stereological correction. There exists many stereological correction procedures, but one group of such procedures is based on using those stereological equations that do not require making assumptions regarding particle shape or texture. These equations are called geometric probability equations.Davy derived a geometric probability equation to estimate the covariance of mineral composition distributions for particles from both particle sections and linear intercepts. This covariance can be used to measure the variance of the particle composition distribution of each mineral. The equation as presented by Davy requires textural information; however the equation was modified by Gay to be more directly applied to particle sections and linear intercepts. The variance obtained from applying this equation is fundamental to the binary stereological correction procedures developed by Gay and his colleagues; the covariance is fundamental to the multiphase stereological correction.Thus far, validation of both the binary and multiphase stereological correction has been achieved using numerical simulation. This paper shall present results comparing the covariance (and variance) estimates from Gay’s equation with actual three-dimensional information obtained from serially sectioning particles. This involved mounting a set of particles and continuously sectioning all particles uniformly so that the three dimensional structure of the particles could be obtained.The mineralogical data to which the equations described above were applied were derived from two individual size fractions from a hard-rock titanium deposit. "Chador-Malu iron ore is one of the most important iron mines of Iran.About 98 percent of Fe in the ore is in shape of Magnetite, Hematite, Martite, aqua oxide of Iron and the other irons are with ferrous silicates, actinolite, cholorite and ferrous dolomites. 1% of Fe has replaced in pyrite. The phosphor distribution in the ore is non-hemogenous and its average in the whole of the deposit is 94%. It is in shape of Apatite.This mine contains considerable phosphor, which makes it useless for metallurgical uses. At this mine the phosphor is reduced in the iron ore at two steps. At the first step, magnetic part of the ore is separated from the gangues and phosphors by magnetic separator. At the second step, the ore is enriched by the flotation methods. "During the conventional chromite dissolution process; chromite ore concentrates were ground to at least <90 µm using the ball mill and after adding Na2CO3 and leaning material (instead of CaCO3 also residues from the leaching process) at a ratio of e.g. 1:0.75:1.2, depending on the specific formulation, follows the digestion e.g. in a rotary kiln, heated in countercurrent. The reaction time is 3 to 8 h. The calcine is comminuted and leached with water or a thin chromate solution. Depending on the type of ore used, the yield is 75-85 %. The disadvantage of the above-described process is that it is impossible, using current technology, to achieve a complete digestion of the chromite ores and that the chromium-containing residues have to be disposed of as special waste, involving a large financial effort.The subject of this study was the investigation of the effect of vibratory milling on chromite dissolution. The impact stress in the vibratory mill causes the mechanical activation of chromite, which is characterised by lattice defects. The degree of mechanical activation can be quantified by measuring the relative X-ray diffraction intensities at the parent lattice planes of chromite. Each relative X-ray diffraction ratio correlates with a certain degree of digestion. As opposed to vibratory milling, a complete digestion of chromite using a ball mill is impossible, even at extremely long grinding times.In this investigation a chromite concentrate from Pulpinar/Kayseri with content of 44 % Cr2O3 and the Eccentric Vibratory Mill was used. In order to verify the effect of the vibrating grinding on chromite dissolution, reaction kinetic investigations on digestion and leaching were carried out."

"The autoclave noble metal desorption in apparatuses with a dense stationary sorbent layer is perspective for the technology of sorption gold and silver extraction from solutions and pulps by carbon sorbents. The study of the mechanism and optimization of the autoclave desorption process involve some difficulties. To overcome them it is necessary to use mathematical and quantum-chemical modelling. The given paper deals with a mathematical model for the dynamics of gold and silver desorption from active carbons by alkali solutions based on the physical-chemical notions of the process. The kinetics and the mechanism of the process were investigated using the mathematical model for gold and silver desorption.The calculation of the efficient mass-transfer coefficient (ße) for various initial and intermediate noble metal concentrations in carbon (Cy) made it possible to find that the dependence of ße on Cy in case of gold desoprtion shows a clear extreme character. The value of the initial metal concentration in carbon therewith does not influence the character of the curve the inflection point of which is changed essentially at elevated process temperatures only. The revealed characteristic property, in the author's opinion can only be indicative of the change in the mechanism of gold desorption under autoclave desorption conditions. The assumed [Au(CN)(OH)]- type intermediate that has a higher diffusion coefficient in comparison with the adsorbed complex [Au(CN)2]- can be considered as an intermediate compound in the process of gold desorption."

The production of phosphate concentrates (phosphate rock) from slimes represents a challenge to the phosphate industry worldwide. In Brazil, this challenge is particularly relevant due to the consistently low P2O5 grades and the igneous origin. The Brazilian phosphate deposits are made up mainly of apatite from alkaline chimneys, representing 80% of the Brazilian reserves; phosphorite deposits contribute 18% and the other sources (guano, phosphorous bauxite, and apatite from veins) reach 2%. The Brazilian industry beneficiates phosphate ores that are mineralogically more complex than those treated elsewhere. The low apatite grade, inherent to the igneous Brazilian ores, added to the mineralogical complexity due to the weathering of the rocks, has represented a permanent challenge to the Brazilian process engineers. The total measured, indicated and inferred reserves reach 3.2 million tonnes of ore with average grade 11% P2O5. The development of local technology for phosphate beneficiation started in the 1960’s. The first industrial experiences of producing phosphate rock from slimes (-44µm or -325#) fraction started at Arafertil, currently Bunge Fertilizantes SA, in Araxá, in the 1980’s. This production corresponds, nowadays, to 35% of the total production of concentrates in the company (830,000t/year) in a circuit consisting of desliming in 40mm microcyclones and concentration in flotation columns, corn starch and fatty acids being utilised as reagents. The performance of slimes flotation and the process control, at Bunge´s concentrator, were improved after the introduction of column flotation technology, in the first half of the nineties. The column flotation technology for slimes recovery was expanded to other Brazilian concentrators still in the nineties: Ultrafértil (Catalão – GO), Bunge (Cajati – SP), Fosfértil (Tapira – MG) and Copebrás (Catalão – GO). At present the Brazilian production of phosphate rock is approximately 4.5Mt/year, with a strong trend for a market increase. Genuinely Brazilian technology is utilised for the processing of slimes, the concentrates representing 11 to 13% of the overall production. The production of apatite concentrates from slimes was relevant to increase phosphate recovery and reduce costs, contributing to the growth of the fertilisers industry.

"The separation of raw materials in the separator with ferromagnetic liquid occurs due to differences in magnetic and gravitational properties of respective components in relation to each other and to the liquid. In the separator with wedge-shaped pole shoes and the working space axis inclined at a certain angle to the horizontal direction, the paths of grain movement at fixed separation conditions depend on its physical properties. Due to this, the levels of grains outlet from the separator working space are differentiated according to differences in their physical properties. The distance between the levels of outlets from the separator working chamber depends on magnetization of the liquid which is proportional to the liquid density, on the magnetic field intensity and the inclination angle of the separator working passage to the horizontal axis. The separation accuracy is higher the larger is the distance between the outlet levels.The paper will present the methods of visual observation and recording of movement paths of coal grains of different physical properties in the paramagnetic liquid which was the water solution of manganese chloride. The paths were recorded with a video camera in the working chamber by means of a specially constructed device, acting as a periscope, which were then transformed into digital images. Experimental movement paths were confronted to the paths obtained in a theoretical way by means of solving differential equations of movement by a numerical method, achieving good compatibility of experimental and theoretical results. The equations of movement were solved with taking into consideration the drag force, expressed by formula for laminar and dynamic conditions of motion.The course of the path of grain movement depends on grain and liquid physical properties, magnetic field intensity and inclination angle of the working space to the horizontal direction. The two latter parameters can continuously control the process of separation."

This study has been carried out to use the waste sludges generated at Pohang Iron & Steel Co. Ltd. (POSCO) as the raw materials of Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC). The burnability index of the raw mixture and the hydration characteristics and compressive strength of clinker have been examined. The waste sludges were mainly composed of CaO, SiO2, Al2O3, and Fe2O3, the main component of OPC. The Burnability index of mixture was improved, according to the replacement content of POSCO sludge increase. POSCO sludge can be used as a raw material for cement because the state of mineral development and property of clinker produced from POSCO sludge are similar to the plain. Therefore, POSCO sludges can be used as the source materials of iron and calcium oxide.

"Magotteaux and Anglo Platinum started a co-operation program with the main aim of establishing the optimum milling configuration measured in terms of throughput, fineness and energy consumption.For this purpose, a fully instrumented pilot milling plant, supplied by Magotteaux (Pty) Ltd, and equipped with a 0.9 x 1.0 m ball mill, was erected at Frank concentrator (Merensky Pt ore). The primary ball mills at Frank concentrator were surveyed in order to set the conditions for the base case. This data was then replicated in the pilot mill under the same configuration. Thereafter, a series of different parameters were varied in order to attempt to optimize the milling system.Only grate versus overflow discharge and open versus closed circuit will be discussed in this paper.It should be noted that this paper does not attempt to give a universal solution as to what milling configuration is optimum in all cases. The conclusions apply for this particular case and probably most others, but it would be advisable to consider each case on its own.CONCLUSION• Overflow versus grate dischargeAn overflow mill has a “pool” of slurry around the toe of the ball charge, which creates a counter lever to the ball charge. This will reduce the absorbed power in the range of 10-15% (depending on the case) and will consequently result in a coarser grind. The tests found a 4% gain in grinding efficiency (Wio) with an overflow mill but this is probably not significant.This lower absorbed power and coarser grind can be counteracted by increasing the ball charge (if below maximum) and/or by increasing the mill volume when removing the grate discharge (a typical grate takes up about 300mm of the mill length).• Open versus closed circuit"

"Crushing and grinding are the two most common industrial processes. These processes consume nearly 20 per cent of the entire electric power produced worldwide. This enormous amount of electric power consumed results from the fact that modern crushing and grinding machines employ the processes first introduced by the prehistoric man, namely those of compression, impact, attrition, and cutting. The material thus handled decomposes indiscriminately, and almost completely ignoring the microscopic cracks and other defects of its structure. Apart from the irrational use of the power, the crushing and grinding processes currently in use result in irretrievable loss of useful components or else in a substantial deterioration of the final products obtained, all as a result of incomplete grinding or, reversely, of overgrinding, palletizing, or fracture of particles.The principal type of equipment that has almost universally been used all over the world for more than 150 years for crushing both natural and synthetic minerals comprises unbalanced jaw and cone crushers. The driving element of crushing bodies in these machines is an unbalanced weight, which transfers the crushing body, allowing it to squeeze the material within the eccentricity value only. The maximum reduction ratio achieved by such a drive is 5, which is due to the rigid kinematic arrangement of the crusher, its dynamic unbalance, and the impossibility of increasing the number of impacts on the material being crushed. Moreover, conventional machines cannot cope with super hard materials, and their mechanism is vulnerable to damage by uncrushable objects.On the basis of fundamental research into the theories of solid body and vibration, OAO Mekhanobr- Tekhnika have developed a range of vibrating jaw and cone inertia crushers that make a reduction ratio of 30 feasible in an open-circuit operation with the reduction ratio monitored within a wide range. In these crushers, the eccentric drive is replaced with a vibrating one. In this way the rigid kinematic drive became dynamic, thus allowing pieces of material to be crushed in a thick layer due to the effect of their bumping into each other, and with the amplitude changing automatically. "Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is gaining increasing acceptance as a decision-support tool by which to evaluate the environmental performance of a product, process or service. This is evidenced by its inclusion in international policy documents (for example in the European Union’s Integrated Product Policy) and in environmental management standards (the ISO 14 040 series of environmental management codes relate to LCA). In response to this, the minerals industry has conducted a number of commodity-specific LCAs. These include studies for global production of a number of commodities including copper, nickel, aluminium and steel. In addition, a number of minerals companies profess to use LCA as part of their suite of project and technology assessment tools. Often, this collected use represents more a situation of “we do this because we’re told it’s good for business” rather than from any demonstrable evidence of this fact. This has led to a situation of much confusion and disillusionment within the industry, exacerbated by the obvious current limitations of LCA to accurately reflect the environmental performance of minerals and metals.Our point of departure here is that LCA, conforming as it does to the tenets of environmental systems analysis, is a valuable starting point, and that there is merit in exploring to what extent the methodology can be enhanced to better reflect the environmental performance of minerals and metals. Specifically, we explore here the further development of LCA to address the following:• Land Use issues• Consumption of Abiotic Resources including metallic and non-metallic minerals, water and soil)• Human and Eco-toxicity issues relating to mobility and bio-availability of metals• Salinityand address these through selected experimental and simulation case studies relating to energy- and base minerals production. Advances resulting from the United Nations Environment Programme/Society for Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry Life Cycle Initiative are presented in that they directly affect the application of LCA to mining, minerals and metals. Comments are offered on how best the mining and minerals industry might interface with future developments resulting from this Initiative in order that the Initiative can deliver outcomes which render LCA a useful tool for decision making in mining and minerals processing."

"One of the oldest mining areas in the World exist in Africa and the Middle East. This area is being exploited by foreign and local mining entities. Several large plants, both foreign and local as well as small operators, conduct their mining business on a scale which would be could be prohibited in any other part of the world. Relatively recent European disaster with tailing disposal and breakout has highlighted the problem.More important to the author is that the presence of foreign entities in zones which have not remedied the situation but has heightened the concern due to those entities using similar outrageous methods in treatment of waste. The abject misuse of technology cannot be permitted to continue and the lack of any metallurgical knowledge in the treatment of gold ores is considered deplorable for the majority of third world countries.The destruction of cyanide is simple and straightforward and requires no special skills. In South America, we developed a system that is modular, compact and can be operated in batch mode to cater for several clients, as required. Larger installations would require a separate module, as treatmentwould be on a continuous basis."

"Dry coal dressing was popular during the 1950’s and 60’s in many parts of the world. The devices mainly used were air jigs and air tables.The increase in ash and moisture content of run-of-mine coals due to the wide advanced mechanisation of mining methods during and after this period led to that pneumatic devices being unable to treat run-of mine coals with the desired efficiency. Since the 1960’s almost all new coal preparation plants have been based on wet processes that are highly efficient in terms of coal recovery and their ability to handle damp and sticky run-of-mine coals. (Frankland, 1995)However, water is becoming increasingly costly and the disposal of fine products, containing most of the water, is an environmental concern. There would be significant cost savings and a lower total energy consumption if coal could be cleaned dry. Efficient dry coal treatment would be an interesting solution in desert, arid or cold areas.In Germany one dry coal dressing plant is in operation. This is the last operating dry coal dressing plant existing in Europe. The actual technical standard of dry coal dressing has been analysed during test-work and sampling in this plant (Saar Region in Germany). The process and the advantages and disadvantages are presented. The plants problems are low efficiency in the fine fraction –6 mm and the coarse fraction +30 mm and a low overall throughput as well as the lack of an automatic process control system. The separation results in the medium size fractions between +6 and -30 mm are excellent"
