"Evaluating resources and reserves requires the reliable modelling of geological domains and their grades. “Multiple point statistics” simulation is a relatively new geostatistical method to generate complex, high-resolution geological models by extracting high-order spatial relations from training images. A method based on combining multiple training images is developed to obtain the correct amount of large-scale continuity and short-scale variability. A calibration process matches the geological spatial variability between the final realizations and the drillhole dataset. A case study with data from the Red Dog mine, Alaska, United States, shows an appropriate reproduction of short-scale variability along boundaries between geological units.RÉSUMÉ L’évaluation des ressources et des réserves exige une modélisation fiable des domaines géologiques et de leur teneur. La simulation par « statistique multipoint » est une méthode géostatistique relativement nouvelle pour générer des modèles géologiques complexes à haute résolution par l’extraction de relations spatiales d’ordre supérieur à partir d’images d’entraînement. Une méthode basée sur la combinaison de multiples images d’entraînement est développée afin d’obtenir la bonne quantité de continuité à grande échelle et de variabilité à petite échelle. Un processus d’étalonnage fait correspondre la variabilité géologique spatiale entre les réalisations finales et l’ensemble des données de forage. Nanodarcy permeability is common in many oil- and gas-bearing formations requiring unconventional stimulation technologies, such as hydraulic fracturing (HF), which can connect the isolated hydrocarbon-rich pores with a wellbore through induced fracture networks. Even though a dense induced fracture network is capable of accessing economic amounts of hydrocarbons, much of the rock between and very close to the fracture network is still un-accessed and contains extremely low permeability. Inducing fracture networks into brittle rock can create large amounts of micro failures in surrounding regions that are not connected to the wellbore, as can be seen in Fig. 1(a) from the very wide acoustic emissions (AEs) cloud associated with a narrow fracture generation. It is possible in certain types of rock to increase the effective matrix permeability in localized regions based on the damage associated with the surrounding hydraulic fractures and subsequent high stress concentrations along localized pre-existing potential failure zones. To study this problem, laboratory HF tests were performed at true-triaxial stress state in brittle crystalline rock while monitoring AEs. The AE associated with HF was analyzed for source parameters using the moment tensor inversion method called Simplified Green’s Functions for Moment Tensor Analysis (SiGMA). Using the moment tensor for each individual AE event, the mode of failure was determined. Crack slip directions and crack face normal directions were also found, along with the relative volume of individual micro failures as well as a damage parameter. The associated source parameters were used to classify differing regions of damage in the sample induced from HF and correlate these regions of differing damage to the effective drainage region. Shown in Fig. 1(b) is a near-wellbore (NWB) region that contained three times larger average relative volumetric deformation of individual tensile AE events than the average tensile AE event volume from the entire sample. Because of the large difference in micro fracture volumetric deformation for the NWB region compared to the entire sample, predictions of HF induced damage must be included in reservoir drainage predictions.

"The Property of Bevcon Mines Limited, including a recently acquired adjoining south group, occupies an area of 2,625 acres in northeast Louvicourt township, Abitibi county, Quebec. It is situated 17 miles east of Val d'Or at the junction of provincial highways 58 and 59.Gold was first discovered in the area in 1931 by the late S. B. Jowsey on the present property of Buffaddison Gold Mines adjoining to the west. However, it was not until the winter of 1944-45 that diamond drilling encountered encouraging results on the Bevcon claims. During the period 1946-1948 a shaft was sunk to 1,000 feet and considerable development undertaken from the 500-foot to the 1,000-foot levels. Between 1947 and 1950 approximately 24,000 tons of dump ore and 48,000 tons of ore by stoping were milled at Perron Gold Mines. The favourable results of these tests prompted the decision to construct a milling plant at Bevcon. The mill began operating in July 1952, and presently has a capacity of 800 tons per day. In 1953 the shaft was deepened to 1,600 feet and is currently (1955) being driven to 2,225 feet.Total production of gold to the end of 1954 has been 101,024 ounces from the milling of 697,427 tons of ore of an average grade of 0·163 ounces per ton.GeologyThe Bevcon orebodies occur in a granodiorite stock which has an east-west length of approximately 4 miles and a maximum width of 1 1/2 miles. The property covers the central portion of the stock and its contacts with the Keewatin volcanics. Approximately one-third of the northern contact and one-half of the southern contact are contained within the Bevcon claims. The granodiorite has been cut by acid (feldspar porphyry) and basic dykes trending east-west. A younger diabase dyke, 300 feet wide, strikes northeasterly across the property 1,000 feet east of the shaft.The main ore zone, striking east-west, lies between the more northerly porphyry dyke and the north granodiorite-greenstone contact. It has been extensively sheared, fractured, altered, and mineralized by gold-bearing solutions. It is approximately 2,000 feet Jong from the west boundary towards the diabase dyke. The shaft is centrally located and passes through the south contact of the ore zone at the 500-foot level. The zone increases in width and trends northerly with depth, due to the porphyry and greenstone contacts having average dips of 80 degrees and 70 degrees respectively to the north. Thus on the uppermost or 500-foot level the width is 150 to 200 feet, and at the present bottom level at 1,600 feet the width is 400 to 500 feet.Another gold-bearing zone has been indicated 200 to 400 feet south of the main ore zone by limited surface drilling."

Over the years, concentrator plant design has evolved from a large number of small grinding mills to a small number of large mills. In many cases, all of the tonnage runs through a single mill (typically a large SAG mill), so that the plant?s performance hinges on the productivity of this one machine. Industry specifications attempt to address the critical nature of today?s grinding mills in a manner that is often overly complex, neglects economics, and is not clearly focused on the end user?s goals. This paper surveys current industry practices, and proposes an improved approach to standards writing recognizing that product design, procurement, manufacturing, and quality are all inter-related in contributing to a project?s success. The lessons learned here can be extended to specifications for all types of machinery.

"Since there was no representative from Wesfrob Mines Limited, the information on their infra-red concentrate drying operation, which had been prepared by Mr. K. Blower, was presented by Mr, Dorland. Mr. Blower, in submitting the information, emphasized that their objectives in this operation were (a) to guarantee less than 90%, of flow-moisture in their copper concentrates and thus satisfy marine shipping regulation• and (b) to minimize capital costs, The infra-red dryers have satisfied these objectives.To control final moisture in the copper concentrate, current practice is to preheat the filter cake with steam in the disc filter hood and then conveyor-0r7 the concentrate with infra-red calrod heaters. The application of steam aids the system as follows:1) Improves vacuum pump efficiency.2) Lowers viscosity of filtrate (increased temperature},3) Preheats the cake prior to radiant heating. (150°F)The hot cake discharging from the filter ranges from 10.6 to 10.9% moisture. After radiant heating the moisture level is reduced to 8.5% - 9.7% depending on production rate. Further moisture loss occurs during conveying and transferring to the stockpile for a final shipment moisture ranging from 8.1% to 9.5%. "Lake Dufault Mines, Limited, is located north of Noranda, Quebec, and is a producer of copper and zinc concentrates. Various papers have been given on the mill design, construction and operation. 1, 2This paper is intended to describe the application of computer control to the Lake Dufault milling process. A brief history and description of the plant flowsheet will be given, followed by the reasons for installing the computer and the development of the program up to its present use. The success attained to date, comments on economic justification and future plans will also be given.HISTORY AND FLOWSHEETThe Lake Dufault ore body was discovered in September, 1961, and the mill commenced production during August, 1964. The rated capacity of 1,300 tons per day was reached by October 1, 1964. In milling the Lake Dufault ore, many metallurgical problems have been encountered, mainly due to wide and rapid variations in mill heads and oxidation of the massive sulphide ore. However, flexibility in plant layout and the incorporation of up-to-date instrumentation have facilitated its processing."

"The ore currently being milled at Delnite is a high pyrrhotite ore with the gold intimately associated with the pyrrhotite. To get maximum recovery of the gold with the lowest reagent cost, it is necessary to keep the pH as low as possible In the laboratory the best results were obtained with a pH of 10 but in the plant it was found that a pH of 11 was the minimum practical pH. With the n1anual control it was difficult to maintain this figure.The Mines Branch had a conductivity probe (see Fig. 1), developed by Dr. G .G. Eichholz that they wished to try out in plant operation.On June 17, 1963, the probe with all necessary control equipment was installed in the regrind circuit (see Fig. 2) at Delnite Mines. Crushed quick lime is fed at this point but it is also necessary to feed hydrated li1ne at two other points in the cyanide circuit in order to maintain the pH close to 11. 0 throughout the circuit. Only the feeding of the quick lime at the regrind mill was controlled in this test.One thing that concerned me with the operation of the probe was whether the reading on the probe chart would correspond to the pH. A look at the graph accompanying this paper will show that except for very minor variations the graphs of the chart reading and the pH reading are parallel. The upper graph shows that the pH reading and the lime titrations also correspond and that the cyanide titrations appear to have little effect on the pH reading.Table 1 gives the results obtained for the two months before and after the instal1ation of automatic control as well as the two months of control. Unfortunately there was a decided change in ore just after the automatic controls were removed. There was much less pyrrhotitc in the ore than usual thus changing the need for lime and cyanide."

Alberta is labouring, and has laboured, under serious difficulties in the marketing of ?her coals, due to a number of conditions which now obtain, but all of which appear capable of solution, and their elimination would insure a very largely increased market for the vast coal resources of that province. It is perhaps necessary to again mention the fact that 15 per cent of the world's coal resources are to be found in Alberta; 21 per cent of that of North America; 72 per cent of that of the British Empire, and 87 per cent of that of all Canada. While we talk largely of the great wealth of Canada, the immensity of her vast natural resources, it is axiomatic that the mere presence of any natural product in a country does not in itself constitute wealth for that country, unless these raw materials can find a market, either in their raw state, or by the process of manufacture. There are many factors, however, which enter into the marketing of any commodity. The chief of these, in my opinion, is price competition. High costs of production materially reduce the radius in which any product can be marketed, and this applies particularly to coal. Mining costs in the province of Alberta are necessarily high at the present time, due in a large measure to the ease with which the 'gopher hole' mine can be opened with small capital.

"The property of Consolidated Central Cadillac Mines, Limited, consists of 1,103 acres formerly held by Central Cadillac Mines, Limited, and Wood Cadillac Mines, Limited. Both mines have been partly developed to depths of 565 and 1,000 feet respectively, and from 1939 to 1943 they produced gold, with small amounts of silver and tungsten, having a total value of $2,208,528 from 377,489 tons of ore. The average grade of the ore was $5.85 a ton . Less than 10 per cent of the ore hoisted was discarded by sorting. New development work, carried out since the former Wood property has been purchased by Central Cadillac, has shown that the tonnage indicated by mine workings and diamond drilling exceeds 2,000 tons per vertical foot.The property lies between the claims of Kewagama Gold Mines, Limited, and Pandora Cadillac Gold Mines, Limited, and straddles the Cadillac 'break' for a length of nearly 1 ½ miles. The main workings are 1 3/4 miles east of the well-known O'Brien gold mine.GEOLOGYOutcrops are very scarce, with none at all of the most important horizons, so that the general geology shown in Fig. 1 is deduced mostly from underground workings and diamond drilling. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section and Fig. 3 a longitudinal section through the ore zone.The ore lies within a belt of Blake River volcanics which is approximately 600 feet wide and is flanked on the north and south, respectively, by Cadillac and Kewagama sediments. All the formations have a nearly vertical attitude. The Blake River belt consists essentially of well sheared volcanic tulfs, but associated with these in the northern part are a number of bands of iron formation and the central part, to a width of 100 feet, is occupied by talc schists, making the Cadillac fault proper. Intruding the volcanics south of the Cadillac shear zone are dykes of two types- finegrained aplite or quartz albitite, and porphyry; both consist essentially of albite and quartz and are distinguishable only by the grain size. They have the general east-west trend of the formations they intrude."

"Recovering pyrite from the gangue with high sulfur content is of great significance for both economic development and environment protection in China. Due to the global water shortage and high cost in wet separation processes, it is urgent to explore more efficient energy and water conservation method in mineral processing field. This study has proposed an innovative method based on density difference for fine pyrite enrichment by vibration fluidized bed. In this study, the total sulfur content (TSC) of the gangue sample is 19.18%, and the pyrite is disseminated with fine granularity in the gangue which should be crushed for dissociation. The combination and dissociation experiment of -6mm gangue shows that the dominant density of -6+3mm, -3+1mm and -1+0.5mm comminuted material is +2.9g/cm3. Based on the analysis of characteristic, the effects of various factors on the separation performance were experimental studied. The results show that gas velocity, vibration intensity and bed height all have the significant effects. With the increases of superficial gas velocity, vibration intensity and bed height, the separation performance all presents a decreasing tendency. Additionally, the TSC of -6+3mm, -3+1mm and -1+0.5mm materials are respectively up to 37.94% , 35.43% and 30.61% at the optimum conditions, which are the 1.72?1.90 and 2.29 times as much as the TSC of raw material, respectively. This study demonstrates the vibrated fluidized bed can recovery pyrite from the gangue effectively.INTRODUCTIONWith the increasing mining and separation of coal, the yield of gangue has a further growth tendency, which has become one of the largest reserves of industrial waste (Querol et al., 2008). However, many harmful elements, such as S?NOx and Hg, is existed in the gangue leading the serious damage to the soil and environment (Hao, Yun, Zhanyuan, Sen, & Song, 2013). In addition, the economic would be suffered from the loss resulting in the occupied of arable land caused by the accumulation of gangue (Yeheyis, Shang, & Yanful, 2009; Zhou, Liu, Yan, Fang, & Wang, 2012). Therefore, the government has put forward the policies of ""green mining"" in China (Xing & Gao, 2009; R. Zhang, Ai, Zhou, Ju, & Zhang, 2015; Zheng, Du, Li, Qiu, & Yang, 2015). Among different research areas of coal utilization, extracting the useful minerals has become one of hot topics (Ledin & Pedersen, 1996; P. Patra & Natarajan, 2003; Partha Patra & Natarajan, 2004). At present, many researchers has devoted to the desulfurization of coal all over the world. As result, the sulfur element, which is mainly existed in the presence of pyrite, would transferred in the tailings, namely the gangue. Meanwhile, the pyrite is important raw materials to produce rubber, paper, textile and match. Consequently, recovering the pyrite from the gangue is not only suitable to the requirement of ""green mining"", but it could turn the waste into the treasure having the important significance."

This paper will first give a short overview of the Copper Mountain project in British Columbia, which just has started commercial operation earlier this year. The grinding process with one 34' x 20' SAG mill and two 24' x 39.5' ball mills will be briefly discussed. All three mills are gear driven by a ring gear, dual pinion and two low speed synchronous motors. Copper Mountain has installed on all three mills, the new state-of-the art dual pinion mill drives. All the inherent operation and maintenance features of this drive technology will be discussed, as well as the advantage of having variable speed control also on the ball mills. The installation and commissioning of the mills and drives at Copper Mountain will be briefly reviewed. Finally the first field measurements on these low speed mill drives will be presented, with the main focus on the low mechanical stress impact of these mill drives on the pinion and ring gear, as well as the accuracy of the load sharing between the two motors.

"The most important factor in Canadian mining is not the operating cost of current projects but the availability of capital for future projects. The future of mining at depth will be producing ore from the top of the orebody working downward with very effective, tightly controlled mining methods, i.e. either selective mining or bulk mining with well controlled dilution and fragmentation. The key characteristics of future mines will be smaller access excavations, more effective ground support, very precise blasting techniques and more efficient and reliable materials handling systems. Equipment will be smaller and designed for high efficiency and low maintenance, reducing both the capital and operating cost. This means there will be fewer scoops, more continuous mucking machines and conveyor belts, both lateral and vertical.Orepass failures have become accepted and the resultant redevelopment and retramming has become common. The capital investment in so-called permanent ore passes and crusher stations becomes questionable, particularly when crushers are only necessary for less than 10% of the ore going through the system. The best way to solve the chronic instability of ore passes is, as with all of the stability problems at depth, by reducing the excavation size rather than increasing ground support. Smaller access drifts would reduce the capital cost and increase the rate of development as well as reduce the amount of waste to be handled, reducing the ground support and the ventilation requirements. Large drifts and ore passes are essential only for the equipment needed to handle large pieces of ore and the productivity of scoops is very expensive when the requirements for ventilation and large access drifts are taken into account. The key issue is the fragmentation generated by primary blasting.The future of mining in Canada will depend on simple and robust technology geared to the environment in which it will have to operate. Its survival will depend on some-thing much more fundamental and difficult to accomplish than a technological advance — it will require a dramatic change in the way the mining process is managed, how work is organized, how effort is rewarded and how costs are measured — a complete change in mind-set."

Printed circuit boards of discarded personal computers, televisions, mobile phones and so on contain a significant amount of valuable metals. For the recycle of valuable metals contained in the printed circuit board wastes (P CB W), the effect of temperature on chlorination-volatilization of metals under chlorine gas flow was studied. The experimental sample used was powder of two types: crushed PCBW (Sample 1) made from PC and industrial machines, and crushed-combusted PCBW (Sample 2) made from Sample 1. The principal element in Sample 1 and Sample 2 was copper, about 13 wt% and 20 wt% respectively. Sample 1 was composed of pure metals such as copper, tin and lead. In comparison, Sample 2 consisted of oxide metals such as copper oxide, tin dioxide and silicon dioxide. The two samples were heated at predefined temperatures (ranging from 300 °C to 900 °C) in chlorine gas. The chlorine gas flow into the furnace was set at a rate of 100 mL/min. As a result, copper in Sample 1 began to volatilize at 600 °C and completely vaporized at 700 °C. While in Sample 2, copper started to volatilize at 600 °C and reached 100% vaporization at 800 °C. For Sample 1, zinc finished volatilizing at 500 °C, while for Sample 2, zinc volatilization reached only about 80% (maximum). Also, lead, nickel and titanium showed similar results. Consequently the volatilization rate of Sample 1 is higher than Sample 2 and the temperature dependency was verified for copper, lead, zinc, nickel, antimony, titanium and chromium. In fact, the volatilization rate of these metals increased with the temperature. This result reflects the difference between pure metal and metal oxide, as Sample 2 was combusted before the chlorination-volatilization test. Moreover, the chlorination reaction may be accelerated by a reductive atmosphere because Sample 1 contains carbon. In this study, the volatilization behavior of some valuable metals in PCBW by chlorine gas was observed. Further improvement in the rate of volatilization can be achieved by optimizing the experimental conditions.

"A hydrostatic elevation difference meter has been developed for use in measuring elevations along gravity traverses. Elevations of stations 100 feet apart can be obtained at a rate of 1/2 mile per hour and to an accuracy better than 1/3 foot. This can be done along traverses which have not been cut and chained. The instrument is durable, lightweight and constructed of materials which will withstand any temperature encountered in field work.It is believed that this device will more than double the rate at which gravity surveys over mining prospects can be carried out."

The Codelco Norte Smelter process 2,500 tpd of arsenic-bearing concentrates with an arsenic content of up to 1.5% in one of its two main smelting units, the Teniente Converter. The product, 1,100 tpd high-grade matte or white metal, is traditionally fed to the PS converters, while the 1,700 tpd of slag is fed to the slag cleaning electric furnace for copper recovery. This is achieved in a very reductive environment which reduces the viscosity of the slag and enhances the sedimentation of the high-grade matte droplets. The behavior of arsenic in this non-oxidative environment was studied at lab-scale and fundamental thermodynamic data were obtained. Based on these data a thermodynamicbase model to assess the arsenic behavior in reductive environment was developed. It is based on a mass balance for the reduction and sedimentation stages performed in an electric furnace which allows the recovery of high-grade matte droplets after decreasing the viscosity of the slag. This model can be a very suitable tool for predicting fractional distribution of arsenic in the slag cleaning electric furnace, when the distribution ratio, vapor saturation degree, temperature, y As and pO2 are given.

The microstructure of commercially pure aluminum was investigated by using polarized optical microscopy (POM), orientation imaging microscopy (OIM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques. Specimens were deformed in torsion at 400°C and equivalent strain rate of 0.1 s-1, to various strains of 0.2, 0.5, 1, 4, and 6. The results indicate that POM can usefully reveal grain and subgrain structures over a large field in aluminum. TEM is most suitable to study dislocation substructure and evolution of subgrains. While TEM microscopy and OIM are capable of resolving individual subgrains, OIM can not reliably distinguish subgrains with small misorientations, particularly in samples with low strain. On the other hand, the OIM technique is very useful in the analysis of many regions surrounded by high, medium, and low angle boundaries (HAB, MAB, LAB). Various misorientation maps were studied using different data processing methods. The analysis revealed that the subgrain size is relatively insensitive to strain. The fraction of low LAB ( < 5°) decreased and HAB (>15°) increased conversely with increasing strain, whereas MAB (5-15°) remained stable. The development of an increasingly bimodal grain boundary misorientation distribution is consistent with the predominance of dynamic recovery (DRV) in the evolution of microstructure, combined with geometrical dynamic recrystallization (gDRX), now called grain-refining DRV.

The recovery of copper and cobalt from the ancient copper slags, located in Küre-Turkey, is investigated. Fayalitic type of ancient copper slags containing 1.41% Cu, 0.53% Co and 53.16% Fe were subject to the experimental study. Magnetic separation, gravity concentration and flotation test were conducted. The results of magnetic separation and gravity concentration were not satisfactory. However, a concentrate containing 9.57% Cu could be produced with 44.7% recovery by flotation. Copper and cobalt that remained in the flotation tailings was recovered by roasting with sulfuric acid followed by hot water leaching. Complete cobalt dissolution was observed in 1 hour of roasting at 150°C and 3:1 acid/slag ratio, whereas the copper recovery was 83%.

"Camlaren Mines, Limited, owns a group of claims near Gordon lake, in the Northwest Territories about 45 miles northeast of Yellowknife. The Hump vein on the property was explored continuously from the summer of 1937 to December, 1938, when all work was stopped. The two-compartment vertical shaft sunk near the vein is 380 feet deep and drifts and cross-cuts on the 200- and 350-foot levels total 2,241 feet . This exploration indicated 13,177 tons of ore with a gold content of between ½ and 1 ounce a ton1GEOLOGY AND STRUCTUREThe property is underlain by remarkably fresh greywacke and slate of the Early Precambrian Yellowknife group. The thickness of the b ~ds averages 1 to 2 feet, although that of the coarser greywacke may be 10 feet or more. Most of the greywacke beds show a gradation in grain from sandy at the base to slaty at the top. They are composed of chlorite, sericite; carbonate, and detrital quartz and feldspar grains.The structure of the greywacke and slate underlying a part of the property of Camlaren Mines, Limited, is shown in Fig. 1. The beds are isoclinally folded so that they dip at steep to vertical angles and at many places are overturned. The axes of the folds are 50 to several hundred feet apart, and generally plunge at angles of 45° or steeper. The beds along the axes of the folds generally meet to form a sharp V, and at the point of the V, or axial part of the fold, the beds are commonly ruptured . Minor faulting movements along the broken crests of the folds in many cases result in well-defined shear zones. Discontinuous quartz veins and irregular lens-like masses of quartz lying more or less parallel with the bedding are plentiful throughout the sediments, but tend to be concentrated along the ruptured and sheared, anticlinal and synclinal fold axes ( Fig. 1)."

"In the past two to three years, all continuous mining machines at the Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Mining Limited, Lanigan Division, have been changed over to a new cutting pattern using 1 -inch- and 1-3/l6-inch-diameter self-sharpening pencil bits. The bits are arranged in a cone-type pattern across the face on 2 1/2 -inch and 3-inch spacing. The result is that the ore is removed by chipping and flaking. Previously, rap-lock bits were used, with the pattern being several bits in single rows at wide spacings. The cutting action was grinding and breaking.Besides improved penetration rates and lower bit costs, there are many other advantages. The ore size is much smaller, resulting in less wear and tear on conveyors and other associated equipment. Feeder-breakers are no longer routinely set up at the head end of every extensible belt, as the banana-shaped chunks of ore that used to require breaking are no longer produced. Also, less dust is generated by the cutting heads and fewer stops are required for bit changes. Even the mill operation has been improved, as fewer fines are produced.Further improvements are still sought after, but, all in all, the new cutting pattern is considered to be a giant step forward from the old method."
