"Analytical engineering design is based upon a trial-and-error iterative and deterministic process. Within this process, the engineer obtains some estimated values, plugs them into de facto closed-form equations, and receives output, which is expected to be a single number that serves as the basis for the design. This number is typically a factor of safety, or some other equivalent strength-stress ratio. This provides the engineer with a quick and relatively quantitative design methodology. This can create problems however, because in mining applications, the actual in situ system is highly variable, complex and often chaotic, which can lead to potentially incorrect conclusions that result in unsafe designs. A more appropriate and reliable approach is a probabilistic analysis for engineering design. This process is used widely in civil and other engineering disciplines, but is often overlooked for applications in coal mine design. Additionally, it seems the amount of past studies using this approach, especially in coal mine design, are rather limited. Considering how the probabilistic approach can account for uncertainty in parametric values and how unpredictable a mining design can be, the authors believe that this approach has potential in mining. This paper will focus on a summary of past studies related to probabilistic analysis in coal mine pillar design and provide recommendations for future work that could improve design reliability. INTRODUCTIONFeasibility and fundamental design procedures for excavations often start with an assessment of mine openings, pillar design, and the surrounding structure by using a deterministic approach with closedform solutions (ex. Bienawski, Obert-Duvall). These are reliable methods, but designers know that the inputs in these closed-form solutions are estimates at best and do not incorporate any degree of uncertainty. This is therefore not an optimal design procedure.A more appropriate design should incorporate some uncertainty because of the chaotic and variable nature of geology and mining conditions in general. In an attempt to account for uncertainty, a probabilistic approach can be adopted, which accounts for deviations in variables and provides a more optimum design solution. By applying a probabilistic approach, a designer can look at multiple failure scenarios at the same time instead of using the same deterministic design over and over."

Mine design, planning and scheduling is a very complex, iterative process comprising several interrelated and interdependent activities. Understanding how this process works, identifying the critical pieces of information and the decisions to be made is key to initiating business process improvements (BPI) or business process reengineering (BPR) activities. Fundamental to most BPI and BPR work is some form of systems analysis. Structured Analysis is a powerful systems analysis technique that is well suited for modeling and analyzing complex process activities. Through a series of diagrams, this paper presents a vertical slice through the analysis work performed for formally describing the underground hardrock mine design and planning process. These diagrams illustrate how simple graphic constructs can be used to decompose the most complex situations into easily understandable diagrams that facilitate understanding, communication, improvement and reengineering.

"In the present study, the reduction behavior of composite pellets comprising of iron oxide, synthetic graphite and slags were investigated in a laboratory-scale horizontal tube furnace. Two different types of slags indicating silicate base and aluminate base slags were chosen to examine the effect of slag chemistry on the reduction behavior of pellets. Slag composition of binding materials has influences on the reactions occurring in composite pellets during direct reduction. In-situ high temperature visualization approach was used to observe the slag / iron / carbon interactions at 1773K (1500°C). The off-gases were measured by means of infrared analyzer to determine the reaction rates of the pellets. Different physical appearances during the in situ reaction inferred a strong correlation between the slag composition and internal reactions. In addition, compression tests were conducted to examine physical strength of the pellets. This investigation was carried out to establish feasibility of physical property control of pellets by selecting optimum slag compositions of binding materials INTRODUCTIONCurrently, most of the iron ore mines have facilities that make an ore more usable for the blast furnace operation by improving its physical properties (e.g. pelletizing and sintering). However, during the process, a large amount of fuel is supplied to indurate materials which consequently deteriorate energy efficiency and produce more CO2 emission. Along with increased interests, direct reduced iron (DRI) making process; simply without coke oven or sintering process, has opened the era of clean and environmental friendly iron making process. While some of the established DRI technologies such as Midrex and HYL were restricted to certain locations where natural gas is abundant, coal based technologies using Rotary Hearth Furnace (RHF) such as FASMET and ITmk3 have been developed with regardless of expensive fuel deposit. In addition to the direct use of pulverized non coking coal and fine iron ore, RHF process also has advantages of utilizing waste materials such as EAF dust, biomass and recycled plastics. Nevertheless, there are still many challenges in the coal utilizing technologies as the unprocessed coal and the waste materials contain huge volatiles and ashes. Although recent investigations on volatiles in a RHF process (Sohn and Fruehan, 2005, 2006) have indicated the benefits of coal in terms of iron oxide reduction and have shown feasibility of multi-layer process, carbon composite pellets still have disadvantages because of its weak mechanical bonding strength. As the mixed system with carbon and oxides generates intermediate gases (e.g. CO and CO2) between solid particles, it is difficult to keep its physical state without the help of binding materials. In this reason, industries have been tried to use various binding materials such as bentonite, kaolinite and Portland cement. However, they are still struggling to find out new materials that provide not only sufficient mechanical strength but also metallurgical properties, such as porosity, reducibility and swelling throughout the reduction reaction. Recently, Canadian researchers (Aota et al, 2006) observed enhanced mechanical strength of pellets by using high alumina cement as a binder and concluded that the method could be used to recycle EAF dust as well, but in depth mechanism of reinforced strength has not been concerned. Most of the ashes coming from binders formulate certain type of slag during the reduction process due to its incombustibility. Thus, observation and regulation of slag property is an essential for the control of carbon composite pellet. Yet, only a little thermodynamic consideration from the perspective of slag chemistry has been adapted in the iron and steel making industries as ash has been easily ignored for its tiny proportion. "The Cenex orebody occurs at the intersection of northwest and northeast-trending fault zones that formed during post-Hudsonian uplift. The ore is localized in breccia zones, along faults, and in veins and adjacent wallrocks. The host rocks are Tazin quartzo-fe/dspathic mylonites and ultramylonites and chloritesericite- quartz-graphite-feldspar mylonite schist. The uraniumbearing minerals are finely disseminated pitchblende and uraniferous titanate.The earliest mineralization may have been associated with /ate-stage retrograde metamorphism in the mylonite schist. The main stages of mineralization were associated with brecciation, hematization, carbonatization, and chloritization of the mylonites and ultramylonites. Uranium mineralization was clearly much later than any igneous or metamorphic activity associated with the Hudsonian orogeny.Late post-orogenic uplift, erosion, and deposition of the Martin continental clastics in fault basins were coeval with uranium mineralization. The deposit is consistent with a meteoric-hydrologic system constituting a source for orebearing fluids, hence the close spatial relationship of the uranium deposits in the Beaverlodge area with the basal unconformity of the Martin Group."

"This paper is based on a statistical analysis of the Smallwood iron ore mine (6). In this mine, the prediction of magnetite is especially difficult because of strong trends. Recognizing the statistical limitations of the sample data, the paper approaches the basic statistical analysis of the magnetite by endeavouring to obtain a first approximation of its sample density function. The knowledge of the distribution of a random variable is essential for several reasons, but particularly: (1) to obtain reliable estimators of the population parameters -for example, mean and variance; and (2) to use these estimators in hypothesis-testing concerning future experiments -sample points and sample intervals."

"The property owned by Senator-Rouyn Mines, Limited, is in Rouyn township about 17'2 miles southwest of the town of Rouyn. It adjoins the Chadbourne claims of Noranda Mines, Limited, on the south and the Bagamac property on the ·west. It includes seven claims-block 44, blocks 80 to 83 and blocks 96 and 97; the mine is wholly in blocks 44 and 82.Late in 1936 gold was discovered in an outcrop of rusty weathering carbonate rock near the north end of block 44, and the following year the present Company was organized to proceed with the development of the property. During 1937-38, 17,000 feet of diamond drill core were bored to determine the extent of the ore deposit at depth. From October 15th, 1940, to April 15th, 1941, the ore was hauled to the mill at the Arntfield mine for treatment. The mill on the Senator-Rouyn property started on April 25th, 1941, and has been in practically continuous operation since than time. To the end of 1946, 574,874 tons of ore, from which gold having a value of $3,836,450 was recovered, were treated in the mill.GEOLOGYThe rocks exposed at the Senator-Rouyn mine, except in the southern part of the property, are almost wholly quartz diorite, part of an irregular mass that extends west from the town of Rouyn along the north shore of Noranda lake and thence southwest across the Senator-Rouyn claims. In the northern part of the propertyt inclusions of rhyolite occur here and there in the diorite. In the southern part the predominant rock is dacite and in the east-central part of block 44 claim andesite. Dykes of andesite, quartz syenite, and later diabase also occur on the property.The andesite of the Abitibi volcanics is not exposed on the property, but has been intersected in three diamond drill holes, one on the eastern boundary of block 44 and two farther west within the block. This andesite is probably the western end of a band of pillowed andesite well exposed in the Larose claim to the east."

One of the oldest settled portions of Canada is that "strip of land" extending into the Gulf of St. Lawrence, known as the Gaspe peninsula, with the Bay of Chaleur on its southern boundary. This "strip of land" is still so very sparcely populated that only at a few places does settlement extend more than a few miles from the coast. ? The peninsula is 160 miles long, 75 miles wide and with the exception of the above mentioned settlements is a mountainous wildness-void of all roads or inhabitants. Developments in the interior, of all nature, out-side of the cutting of timber by limit holders, was entirely lacking until the year 1915, when mining was first commenced. In the summer of 1844 Sir William Logan made a preliminary survey across the peninsula, from Cape Chat on the Gulf of St. Lawrence to Cascapedia on the Bay of Chaleur, passing through a country ?of which very little was known at that time. After a rather rough trip to the headwaters of the Grand Cascapedia river, Logan's party descended this river to its mouth, passing ten miles west of what is now known as the Federal mines. There is no record of Logan, or of any of his party, finding zinc or lead ores of any character on their journey across the peninsula, and until 1909 no precious or base metals were discovered within reasonable distance of Logan's survey.

"Fractures and fracture zones containing veins and stringers of auriferous quartz in a quartz porphyry dyke are the principal structural features at the Howey and Hasaga gold mines. The 'break' containing the dyke was produced by a force from the northwest, the fractures in the dyke by compressive stress from the west.Both mines are in the north-central part of Heyson township, in the Red Lake area. They lie close to the southeastern side of the Dome granite stock. The Howey mine exhausted its ore reserves and ceased operations in November 1941. The Hasaga mine is producing at the present time (June, 1946).Mineralization was first discovered in the dyke in 1925 by the Howey brothers. Lorne Howey's discovery, which became the Howey mine, came into production in April, 1930; Ray Howey's find, which is now the Hasaga mine, started production in November, 1938.The total production from the Howey mine was 421,324 oz. gold and 144,253 oz. silver from 5,158,376 tons of ore hoisted ( 4,319,331 tons milled) during its 11 years of operation.The total production from the Hasaga mine from November, 1938, to December 31, 1945, was 124,434 oz. gold and 51,009 oz. silver from a total of 901,098 tons hoisted (721,361 tons milled).GENERAL GEOLOGYThe porphyry dyke containing the orebodies at the Howey and Hasaga mines lies a short distance southeast of the contact of a granite-granodiorite mass known as the Dome stock. The dyke fills a fracture trending N.65°E. in a tongue of Keewatin volcanic breccia that extends in a rather irregular manner into an elongate intrusive stock of dioritic rock known as the Howey diorite. The accompanying table presents the geological succession."

Le minerai est constitué habituellement de 20% de fine pyrite disséminée. L’or est en fines particules associées directement à ces grains de pyrite de texture cataclastique.Deux modelés ont été for mules jusqu' a présent pour expliquer la genèse du gisement: une thèse syngenetique (Barnett et a/.1982) et une thèse épigénétique (Wyman et al. 1986). ONE of the reasons advanced for the decline in prospecting and discovery is that, as regards surficial examination, the law of diminishing returns is becoming applicable. Fewer surficially unprospected fields remain; therefore, fewer discoveries by such means result. Much in the nature of mineral resources remains to be unearthed, but even now, and more so in the future, will discovery depend on painstaking petrographic and structural mapping, aided, where necessary, by judicious applications of all the complementary scientific knowledge and devices (e.g., thin section microscopy, geophysics, and drilling) that experience proves effective in localizing a mineral deposit even beneath drift, lake, or muskeg. It is to be expected, then, that the rate of discovery will decrease, that the cost per discovery will greatly increase, and that the work of discovery will become more and more the careful, methodical assembling of field data, conscientiously interpreted on the basis of scientific knowledge by trained, experienced operatives. In view of these trends, the status of applied geophysics to Canadian mining exploration and development work might well be reviewed. The niche which geophysics may occupy relative to geological surveying and drilling has been clarified by the last twenty years' experience. The cloud of somewhat justifiable scepticism that followed the 'geophysical promotion' period of the late 1920's has lifted. Mining, exploration, and finance companies, in open-minded fashion, are seeking sound advice as to what are the scope and limitations of the geophysical methods at present practised. The purpose of this paper and the following one is, therefore, as far as lies within the author's power, to review briefly the geophysical methods at present in practice in Canada, and, at greater length, to joint out impartially and critically their scope, merits, shortcomings, an possible future development. The treatment will be non-technical, the hope being that an accurate statement of the present status of geophysics in Canada may do much to result in a sounder, saner growth of what, in the future, shall undoubted} y prove an increasingly useful tool in exploration and development work. ?

DELN ITE Mines Limited is located in Deloro township, on the west end of the south break of the Porcupine Camp. Mining operations are currently being carried out on the downward extension of a system of quartz veins in an andesite zone. This zone has been followed from surface to the present bottom level of 5,250 feet. The changing mineralogy of the vein system has involved an increase in tourmaline content from the surface downwards, so that the veins at the lower levels are composed of dark brown quartz-tourmaline. The drilling problem presented by these extremely hard veins was partially alleviated by the development and adoption of a one-inch drill bit. All blast-hole drilling is now done with the one-inch bit, without any difference in hole spacing.

Base and precious metal refineries often produce effluent solution and slurry streams containing between 50 mg/L and several grams per liter of base metals. Metals have historically been precipitated from these streams with lime to produce effluent streams at pH values between 8 and 9. This effluent treatment process generally does not remove alkali and alkali-earth metals or halides efficiently and with more stringent environmental legislation, more sophisticated effluent treatment plants must be considered which could for example incorporate sulphate removal with ultra-filtration, or the SavminTM process, followed by reverse osmosis for the removal of halides. The flowrates of effluents are often high and if base metals can be recovered before neutralization, the revenue generated from this stream can reduce the cost to produce clean water significantly, and in the case where high concentrations are disposed of, result in a profitable operation. As an add-on to an existing the plant the recovered metal is upgraded and recycled to the plant, but the production of a saleable metal can also be considered. Technology selection for metal recovery depends on the composition and flowrate of the effluent, but could incorporate resin-in¬pulp or other ion-exchange technology; precipitation as sulphides, hydroxides or carbonates; or solvent extraction. This paper describes, as a case study, the technology selection process and uses data from Zincor. Zincor is a division of Exxaro Base Metals (Pty) Limited, a subsidiary of Exxaro Resources Limited.

The area in Quebec immediately north of the Ottawa river is underlain by a large area of granite gneiss intruded in lit-par-lit fashion into Grenville sediments and low silica intrusives of the Buckingham Series. This complex of metamorphic rocks is intruded by a much later magma found, chiefly, as a very large stock about 20 miles in diameter and extending from Brownsburg to Grenville, and as dykes and small outliers at various places adjacent to its outer margin. 1A similar stock at Rigaud, Quebec, is situated south of the Ottawa river and has been described by O. E. Le Roy. The earliest representatives of the later magma are a series of granodiorite dykes characterized by abundant hornblende, along with primary magnetite and subordinate sulphides scattered as roundish grains through anorthoclase and aligoclase feldspars and subordinate quartz. The rock is found as narrow dykes and shows no prominent secondary structures, either in the field or in thin sections under the microscope.

At the 1924 Annual Meeting of the Institute, held in Toronto, the writer presented some notes on the occurrence of salt at Malagash, Nova Scotia, together with a few remarks on the uses of salt. The development of these salt mines has attracted considerable attention to the district, and it may be of interest at this time to call attention to some of the newer uses of salt, and to give a brief account of the genesis of the Maritime salines, As it is not proposed to treat the subject in technical detail, and the paper is written in a lighter vein than is usual in contributions to your Transactions, you will please overlook any variations from a strictly technical method of presentation. The world's supply of salt is obtained in three principal ways: (1) By flooding shallow areas, or pans, with sea water, allowing the water to evaporate naturally by the heat of the sun's rays, and collecting the residue of solid salt. This method is employed, for example, at Turks Island, B.W.I. (2) By mining the rock salt in its natural state, and preparing it for market by a grinding process. This is the method adopted at Malagash, which is the only place in Canada where salt is actually mined. (3) By drilling a hole into an underground salt deposit, forcing fresh water clown the hole, and, after it has become saturated with salt, pumping the brine to the surface and recovering the salt by evaporation. This is the method pursued by the Canadian Salt Company, the Dominion Salt Company, and other producers in Ontario.

"LIKE ALL OTHER NOVA SCOTIANS, I have been thrilled during the past few years with the growing evidence that substantial reserves of oil and gas are being discovered off the Atlantic coast of Canada. There are those in this province who believe that large-scale commercial production is just around the corner, and that when it starts Nova Scotia will begin to float on a sea of royalties. These overly optimistic people, of whom I am not one, are convinced that with the first barrel of oil shipped to market, Nova Scotia can forget its financial problems while its people take on the luxurious lifestyle of the shieks of Kuwait or Saudi Arabia. You and I know, however, that even though offshore oil and gas may turn out to be the greatest gift nature has ever bestowed on Eastern Canada, it may take some considerable time before the reserves can be accurately assessed, before the industry can become fully operational, and before the benefits of production can be translated into royalties and tax revenue, improved public services, new industrial facilities and more jobs. While it is premature for the ordinary Nova Scotian to take on the habit of buying expensive cigars and lighting them with ten-dollar bills, it is not too early for him to insist that governments and industry plan intensively and well for the beneficial exploitation of undersea resources."

This little sketch of the late Willet G. Miller, Provincial Geologist of Ontario, is intended to be neither a biography of his career nor a eulogy of his life. His biography has already been written in an incomparable manner by Mr. T. A. Rickard, his eulogy by Canon Cody. What more can be said of Dr. Miller than is summed up in the words of that great Canadian divine, Canon Cody, that he was "Big in body, big in heart, and, as we learned, big in brain." This article, then, will merely record a few personal reminiscences of the man himself, and while they are necessarily disjointed, they may at least serve to illustrate certain traits in his character which are not generally known or appreciated outside of the circle of his intimate friends. In the latter part of May in the year 1904, Willet G. Miller, with two? assistants, set out for the small village of Haileybury to begin his geological work in the area a few miles to the south which he was soon to name Cobalt. At that time the Timiskaming and Northern Ontario railway was not finished, although the right-of-way was cleared and partly graded. The nearest railway station was on the Canadian Pacific at the south end of lake Timiskaming, from which point the old steamer Meteor carried passengers and freight up the long, narrow and deep waters of lake Timiskaming, a very pleasant trip of some sixty miles. On this particular trip there was a fairly large crowd on board consisting of settlers going into the clay belt north of lake Timiskaming, of lumbermen, and of a few merchants and commercial travellers who were interested in the small business centres of Haileybury, New Liskeard and Ville Marie. Scarcely any attention was paid to the reports of the newly found silver deposits, although the daily papers had announced discoveries in the district six months before. As a matter of fact, the chief excitement on board was afforded by a moose, which, in swimming from the Ontario to the Quebec shore of the lake, crossed the bow of the boat, the captain steering to within a few yards of the terrified animal.

"When the Canadian uranium milling plants went into operation during the early 1950's, they utilized flowsheets developed at the Radioactivity Division of the Federal Mines Branch in Ottawa. Since then, numerous process improvements have been made by the Mines Branch, by the operating companies themselves and by other research organizations. This paper will consider uranium milling technology from the standpoint of a new mine operator charged with the responsibility for the design of an economic flowsheet, and will indicate the range of process elements available to him and the testwork required to enable an intelligent decision to be made."

"THE DETECTION OF BURIED MINERAL DEPOSITS by chemical analysis of vegetation (biogeochemistry) or visual observation of plant cover type (geobotany) is based on fundamentally simple principles. The root systems of vegetation collect aqueous solutions from a large volume of moist ground below surface and act as efficient sampling mechanisms by providing a composite sample of a reasonably large area. These aqueous solutions constitute a source of ore-associated metals that may ultimately be concentrated in the upper parts of the plant. Although certain plant species have a limited ability to break down primary minerals and extract elements, biogeochemistry normally detects only metals capable of moving in solution. Metal concentrations in the underlying soil must therefore exist in a form that is immediately available for uptake by the root systems - generally in the ionic state in aqueous solution or in readily exchangeable form on the surfaces of soil clay minerals. As a result, biogeochemical responses are closely related to variables such as soil pH, Eh, exchange capacity and complexing agents that control metal mobility in the surface environment. In terms of cost, reliability and anomaly contrast, soil geochemistry will normally be more useful than biogeochemistry in locating buried mineralization in regions of residual overburden or thin transported cover. However, in areas where the root systems penetrate thick deposits of transported post-mineralization overburden, plants can provide an effective mechanism of sampling below the transported material. Biogeochemical research in Canada, Scandinavia and the U.S.S.R. has therefore focused on the potential use of plant prospecting methods (1) in areas where the upper horizons of podzolic soils do not provide an adequate response to anomalous conditions under thick deposits of glacially transported till and (2) in widespread regions of peat and muskeg terrain where near-surface mineral soils are absent."

Recycled lead, i.e. material produced by the recycling of lead-acid batteries, has become the primary source of lead in much of the world. This has been important to the recycled lead industry as other uses have dwindled, e.g. lead based pigments, chemicals, fuel additives, solders and CRT glasses. Presently, battery manufacturing accounts for greater than 85% of lead consumption worldwide while recycled lead accounts for approximately the same market share of lead supply. Battery manufacturing and production of recycled lead are intimately coupled. In 2007, of all the industrial base metals, lead from lead-acid batteries had the highest recycling rate in North America at greater than 95%. In this paper we will review some of the processes and technologies used in a modern lead acid battery recycling facility, and how recycled lead has become the material of choice for battery construction through the development of a recovery and refining process that exceeds the industry requirements. We will also briefly review an advanced air emissions treatment system in a modern lead recycling plant that demonstrates the feasibility of a new maximum available control technology (MACT) for secondary lead smelters.

THIS paper relates to an area of more than 5,000 square miles in the Northwest Territories extending north from Great Slave lake and including-the Yellowknife, Beaulieu River and Gordon lake areas. Within the last three years much interest in the area has been created by the discovery of remarkably rich gold-bearing veins and the realization that thousands of square miles of unprospected ground are underlain by rocks like those in which the veins have been found. Probably there were more prospectors in this area in 1938 than in any other part of Canada. The area lies 650 miles north of Edmonton, and 425 miles north of the terminus of the Northern Alberta railway at Waterways, Alberta. The Athabaska and Slave rivers provide an excellent water route from Waterways to Great Slave lake for large oil and wood burning boats and barges which operate from the latter part of May to October. The only portage is around a 16-mile stretch of rapids on the Slave river between Fort Fitzgerald and Fort Smith. The town of Yellowknife, on the north side of Great Slave lake, has sprung into existence during the past year and is the centre for distribution of supplies for the Yellowknife-Beaulieu region. The Con-Rycon and Negus gold mines, which came into production in September, 1938, and February, 1939, respectively, lie about two miles south of the townsite. Excellent airplane service is available from Edmonton to Yellowknife and from Yellowknife to all parts of the area. The prospector and mining operator have come to rely almost entirely on the airplane for supplies and for the transportation of personnel, camp equipment, and canoes from Yellowknife to localities selected for intensive prospecting.
