"THE LORNEX MINING PROJECT is one of several large-tonnage, low-grade operations recently placed in operation in British Columbia. It is located in the Highland Valley in the south central portion of the province. This area is described as a divide valley at an elevation range of 4,000 to 6,000 feet and is situated on the divide between two drainage systems. The major drainage to the west flows into the Thompson River and to the east and south the drainage enters the Nicola River system. This open-ended valley lies between low, rounded mountains in fairly heavily-wooded country. Prior to the commencement of copper mining activities, the first by Bethlehem Copper Corporation Ltd. over ten years ago, the valley was only sparsely settled. A few small ranches were in existence on the several Indian Reserves located along the valley bottomland. There has also been a small amount of logging activity in the valley, although much of the area is covered by dense lodgepole pine which has little or no value to the loggers. As the mining interest mounted with further discoveries of the disseminated copper ore typical of the district, much of the valley was covered with mineral claims and exploration drilling was carried on by several companies at various times. At the time Lornex was preparing to commence major construction work in early 1970, there was very little activity of any kind in the Highland Valley outside of the Bethlehem operation and a small amount of ranching."

Aluminum boron carbide particulate reinforced composites have found new applications in nuclear industry due to their special capability to capture neutrons, Recently, Alcan successfully developed a liquid metal mixing process to fabricate Al¬B4C metal matrix composite instead of powder metallurgical technology. In the process, titanium is added into the composites to control interactions between boron carbide particulates and aluminum matrix, To understand the effects of titanium on the composites, the solidification microstructure of Al-16%B4C without or with titanium was examined by optical and electron microscopes. The results show that titanium can improve the uniformity of the particulate distribution within aluminum matrix if the titanium content in the composites is more than 0,5%, Furthermore, it is found that the layer with rich titanium on the surface of the particulates can limit the formation of AlB2 type compounds, which may greatly deteriorate the fluidity of the composites, In addition, it is also found that the amount of the reaction products in the composites increases with the increase of holding time. However, the rate of the increase is mitigated by the increase of the content of titanium in the composites. Besides, a procedure was proposed and implemented for the evaluation of uniformity of particulate distribution within aluminum matrix.

Introduction From the earliest times it has been an inherent trait of man to build or create something for his own use or convenience. The need of some form of shelter other than that of the caves led him to bind together stones and other materials to form walls for his abode. Moistened clay which hardened upon drying was no doubt first employed. The Assyrians and Babylonians appear to have employed it or the bitumen found in their country. The early Egyptians and Greeks used some form of lime in their construction work. In addition to these shelters, other structures received attention, and, long before the Roman Empire was established, the Carthaginians made use of a natural cement as binding material. Portions of an aqueduct, seventy miles long, in Northern Africa, built in those early days, are still in use. The Etruscans were the first people in Italy to employ a mortar in their buildings. The Romans, learning the art from the Etruscans, improved the mortar by using a mixture of lime and volcanic ash, called 'puzzolan', and built not only roads but those famous structures, the ruins of many of which exist to this day. The Pantheon at Rome, built by Hadrian about 120 A.D., is perhaps the finest example of the early use of cement in building construction. With the decline of the Roman Empire, the art of making cement seems to have been lost, and for centuries the builders of Europe used only lime mortar. Pure limestones were selected for making the lime and great care was taken in the preparation of the mortar, the supply for one year being made the previous season and left to thoroughly slake or 'ripen' in pits covered with earth. The mortar thus produced gave excellent service above ground or where it was exposed to the hardening action of the air, but would not harden under water.

An equilibrium calculational computer program (STABCAL) can be used for titration simulation. The program can handle various forms of titrants: solid, aqueous, gaseous or another solution, and various type of reactions: reductive, oxidative and adsorption. Background chemistry, mathematical considerations, and program development will be illustrated. Also, simple titration applications such as how to determine the acidity of aqueous solutions and alkaline sulfide leaching of gold are presented. Processing of an acid mine water from the Berkeley Pit in Butte, Montana has been used for illustration purposes. The treatment studies included: cementation, sulfidization, and neutralization. The calculational results for the neutralization treatment using various alkaline reagents are compared to actual experimental data and potentially appropriate processes are discussed. Computational

THIS paper is entitled "Some" problems, rather than "The" problems, met in selling coal, since the problems to be met in selling any commodity have to deal with an infinite number of circumstances and conditions. These are believed to be more varied in the case of coal than probably any other commodity. This is due, perhaps, to the fact that coal has been one of the basic materials in the guiding of industrial and national achievement for the past two hundred years. During this time its use has developed from a most haphazard one to uses involving all modern scientific methods, which, rather than simplifying matters as regards the marketing of coal, have added many fresh problems, and these vary according to the particular market served. Since the concern of this paper is primarily the selling of Nova Scotia coal, it is proposed to deal chiefly with some of the specific conditions met in the markets presently served by this coal. For the purpose of discussion, these markets may be considered as divided into three main groups, namely, the Maritime market, the Quebec market, and the Ontario market. THE MARITIME MARKET First of all, let us consider the Maritime market. This is a market which has been regularly served by Nova Scotia coal since coal mining became the first industry in Cape Breton, slightly over one hundred years ago. Conditions as applying to the use of coal have naturally tended to adjust themselves to the characteristics of the coal most readily available, and, therefore, marketing problems are fewer in the Maritimes than in districts where many coals of varied characteristics are offered. Up to recent years, the problems involved were chiefly those of providing satisfactory service insofar as de-liveries were concerned. However, with the speeding-up of manufacturing processes and the necessity of reducing costs to a minimum, users of coal have become interested in obtaining coal that will give the most economical service. It is, therefore, now of importance that the salesman should have full knowledge of the particular conditions applicable to each customer's use in order to deal to the best advantage.

"Although the centennial of the Peirce-Smith (PS) converting process has recently been celebrated, the technology has essentially not changed much since its inception. PS converting is used extensively in the Cu, Ni and PGM industry to remove iron and sulphur from a molten matte phase. A typical PS converting process would use low pressure air supplied by a blower to bubble air through the molten bath. This bubbling injection regime is inherently inefficient from a process and energy consideration. In the late 70’s and early 80’s, Brimacombe and co-workers demonstrated at both laboratory and plant scales that sonic injection (jetting regime) into copper or nickel converters could reduce or eliminate the above hindrances characteristic of PS converting. Since then, in spite of these successes, very little industrial applications have made headway in the converting process of non-ferrous metal mattes on a commercial scale. As part of its operational improvement and energy reduction program (process efficiency), Lonmin Platinum decided to conduct a full scale industrial evaluation of sonic injection using air only to establish if punchless, high efficiency sonic injection was feasible in its small 3.05 × 4.57 m converters (10’ × 15’). A plant trial was run for four weeks in one of its three converters. This paper discusses the plant demonstration with a focus on the experience acquired by Lonmin together with the key learnings from the trials. Reference will also be made to the commercial aspects of a full scale implementation of sonic injection in all three converters in the smelter. The copper-graphite metal matrix composites were fabricated by two different production methods: directly sintering with copper and graphite (Cu-Gr composite), and in-situ sintering with cuprous copper and graphite (Cu2O-Gr composite). During the in-situ reaction sintering, a redox reaction occurs at the interface of the Cu2O particles and Gr particles, resulting in the improved physical and mechanical properties of Cu2O-Gr composites. Compared with Cu-Gr composite, Cu2O-Gr composite has a higher compression strength at any given graphite content due to the improved interface bonding and uniformly distributed fine graphite particles in the matrix. Increasing graphite content decreases the mechanical properties of the copper-graphite composites. The compression strength of Cu2O-Gr composite is 50-100 MPa higher than that of Cu-Gr composite. INTRODUCTION Copper-graphite composites have been widely used in industry due to their low density, relatively high strength and hardness, good thermal and electrical conductivity, arc ablation resistance and self- lubrication ability (Grandin & Wiklund, 2018; Han & Xu, 1999; Huang et al., 2017). Electric sliding contact friction pair in the high-speed railway system and motor brush in electric contact components have a very high demand on electrical conductivity and self-lubrication ability of materials. The electric devices need to bear both mechanical load and high electric current. Copper-graphite composites with good mechanical, electric and self-lubrication properties are the best candidates for application in multifunctional electric sliding contact frication components. The relative sliding speed of friction pair is developing towards 100 m/s or even faster, which can withstand the electric flow of more than 800 A, and it is often accompanied with vibration and impact (Guo & Ding, 2008). Conventional wear-resistant materials can no longer meet the current requirements and this promotes the development of copper- graphite composites with excellent comprehensive properties (Ding, Chen, Zhu, Zhang, & Zhou, 2009; Yasar, Canakci, & Arslan, 2007). There are many ways to fabricate copper-graphite composites, mainly including powder metallurgy method, liquid immersion infiltration method, rapid sintering method and electrodeposition method (Kalin & Poljanec, 2018; Kim, Lee, & Han, 2014; Liu et al., 2018; Wang et al., 2018). Each method has its own advantages and disadvantages, and the powder metallurgy method is the most commonly used one due to its simple process, high economic benefit, and industrial production applicability. The common steps of the powder metallurgy method are as follows (Samal, Parihar, & Chaira, 2013): firstly mixing the copper (copper alloy) powders and graphite with a certain ratio, following by die-forming, and then sintering at the high temperature with or without pressure. The advantage of copper-graphite composites is that the graphite distributed in the copper matrix uniformly and it can form a carbon diaphragm preventing the wear of the composite (Fu & He, 2010). However, the bonding strength of the interface between the copper matrix and the graphite is relative low as the combination between them is mechanical interlocking but not metallurgical bonding (Ma et al., 2008). It is meaningful to develop new fabrication technology of copper-graphite composites with better interface bonding, which could provide guidance for the design of copper-graphite composites with excellent comprehensive properties.

As land resources decrease, commodity prices increase, and technology evolves, deep sea mining is becoming a viable alternative to meet the increasing demand for minerals. Successful deep sea mining operations are built on sound identification of the resource, proper selection of equipment, a thoughtful production plan, and good project management. These four key activities can be further optimized by analyzing how the spatial variability and uncertainty of the ore body properties impact the final mining operation. To address this problem, IHC Merwede is in the process of developing a risk quantification framework in the context of deep sea mining, which makes use of state of the art geostatistical simulation methods and transfer functions to quantify geological uncertainty and translate it into decision or project risk. The paper introduces the Local Average Subdivision method (LAS) for generating simulated models of the deposit and presents a new extension to incorporate point measurements of geotechnical or ore grade properties. Due to its computational efficiency, the presented method is suitable for simulating largely extended sea floor deposits. The second part of the paper illustrates, through example case studies, the significant benefits of a risk based approach which translates geological uncertainty into financial or operational performance indicators. In particular, the focus is on assessing financial project risk and on the design optimization of the deep sea excavation equipment by analyzing cutting forces, specific energies, and power requirements.

Introduction The refining of precipitate is the final stage of all the processes involved in gold mining and cyanide milling, by which the precious metal is at last obtained in a concentrated form, which can be accurately valued and marketed. Possibly one ought to say, conveniently shipped, for accuracy in valuation depends in many instances on a toughening treatment given the bars as received at the Mint so as to obtain a homogeneous metal that lends itself to representative sampling; which, of course, entails a surcharge on the regular Mint charges for the extra work necessarily undertaken. There are several methods of refining zinc-gold precipitate, each with its advocates; the method employed depending not always on the quality of the bullion produced but on the local exigencies of the case in point. These methods are more or less detailed in various textbooks and it is not the purpose of this paper to discuss them, but to confine ourselves to the specific case as stated in the title of the paper. At the outset, it behooves the writer to express his thanks to Mr. Brigham, the General Manager of the Hollinger Mines, for the kindly consideration and encouragement given in developing this process. This will be better understood when one considers the immense values involved, tending towards conservatism in practice, and making one chary of radical innovations. This process has been in satisfactory operation now for about two and-a half years, during which time over twenty-five million dollars value in fine gold has been produced, so that it may be reasonably held that the process is successful.

Historical The limitations of reverberatory furnace operation have prompted many investigators to consider electric furnaces for melting electrolytically refined cathode copper. In the majority of cases where experimental work was performed, the furnace used was of the granular resistor, induction, or indirect-arc rocking type, and attempts to adapt the three-phase direct-arc furnace to copper melting appear to have been relatively few. In 1935, the International Nickel Company of Canada, Limited, carried to an advanced stage its experimental investigation of continuous melting of copper in the three-phase direct-arc furnace, and demonstrated that this process was technologically and economically practicable. Trial operations were conducted at the Huntington, W.Va. works of the Company, and were followed by the installation at Copper Cliff, Ontario, in 1936, of a full-scale unit for commercial operation. Two years later, a second unit was installed -which raised the electric melting capacity to a point permitting complete replacement of the coal-fired reverberatory furnace operation in the production of refined copper castings.

Introduction Ground failure, violent or otherwise, is a problem to be contended with wherever underground operations are carried out. The character and extent of the failure, whether superficial or of more serious proportions, is determined by a number of factors, among which might be mentioned: the depth and dimensions of the underground workings; the types and distribution of wall rocks; structural features of the ore and enclosing rocks; the degree of metamorphism; the dip of the orebody; concentration of mining operations; the rate of mining; the history of the excavations made on the orebody in question. This last factor implies the consideration of such points as the arrangement and distribution of stoping both past and present, the current sequence of scoping, the type and effectiveness of the support used in old and current workings, and the amount and distribution of unmined parts of the lode. With such a variety of conditions, it is only natural that the situation at one place in a mine will not be the same as that obtaining in another part of the same mine and, more than likely, will be quite different in another property.

Foreword Explosion hazards differ widely in the mines of different fields or coal basins. They also differ as between different mines in the same basin or fold, because of variations in gas entering the mines, and because dust conditions and explosion hazards are affected by the mining methods employed and the organization of the work. It is unquestionably true, however, that there are greater differences in explosion hazards in mines of different coal fields or basins than between different mines of the same field or basin. In these respects, the coal fields and individual mines in Alberta are not exceptional. The same conditions obtain in various countries where coal is mined, and are found in single States, as for example in Colorado, where coals are mined ranging in character from sub-bituminous to anthracite, and in attitude from flat horizontal to steeply pitching beds. The U.S. Bureau of Mines, at its experimental mine near Pittsburgh, Pa., has made large-scale tests of the relative explosibility of dusts of coals, ranging in rank from Wyoming sub-bituminous coal containing 19 per cent moisture, to anthracite from Pennsylvania, and including samples from a mine in the Crowsnest Pass district, B.C., and from a Vancouver Island mine. The Bureau has also made similar tests of the dust of coal from a Yorkshire mine which the British Safety-in-Mines Research Board uses as standard.

"The Sullivan mine; at Kimberley in southeastern British Columbia; is the largest silver-lead-zinc mine in the Empire and one of the largest in the world.The original discovery was made in 1892 by four prospectors. Until 1899, when the branch line of the Canadian Pacific railway from Cranbrook to Kimberley was completed, little work was done on the property. In 1900, systematic development was started, and during the next 3 years 5,000 tons of ore was shipped to the smelters at Nelson and Trail. By 1903, some 300,000 tons of ore was developed, and a smelter was started at Marysville, about 5 miles from the mine. However, this smelter closed down in 1907 because of metallurgical difficulties after treating 75,000 tons, and the property came under the control of the American Smelting and Refining Company. An option on the property was taken in 1909 by the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, who exercised their option in the following year. During the next 5 years by selective mining and sorting 188,000 tons of high-grade ore was produced and shipped to Trail. This tonnage came from the upper levels, about 4,600 to 4,800 feet in elevation. At the same time, deep drilling down to the 3,900-foot level showed the presence of an immense body of complex ore. In 1915, the main adit-the 3,900-foot level-was started, and by 1919 this had been driven a distance of 2 miles to develop the ore above this level. Meanwhile, progress was being made in overcoming the milling problems. An interesting account of this work was written by the staff ( 4). In 1923, the first unit of the present concentrator was erected, with a capacity of 2,500 tons a day, and thereafter the rate of production increased rapidly. In 1934 it was around 8,000 tons a day, and to date a total of about 30,000,000 tons of ore has been sent to the mill. In recent years, a considerable part of the production has come from levels between the 3,900-and 3,350-foot, which were opened by an internal incline shaft started in, 1930. In 1942, tin was added to the products separated at the concentrator."

"The kinetics of chalcopyrite leaching in acidic ferric/ferrous sulfate media under atmospheric conditions in the presence of pyrite has been investigated. It has been found that pyrite samples from different sources affect the rate of chalcopyrite leaching differently. A strong correlation between the amount of silver associated with the pyrite and its effectiveness has been noted. In this study, improvement of the catalytic properties of pyrite such that all pyrite samples accelerate the rate of copper extraction regardless of their sources is demonstrated, and a detailed discussion of the mechanisms involved in the process of chalcopyrite leaching in the presence of silverenhanced pyrite is presented. INTRODUCTIONIt is well known that chalcopyrite resists leaching in sulfate media. It has been proved that pyrite facilitates the leaching of chalcopyrite (Berry et al., 1978; Dixon et al., 2008; Mehta and Murr, 1983; Muñoz et al., 2008; Nowak et al., 1984, Tshilombo, 2004). Considering the catalytic effects of pyrite on accelerating the kinetics of chalcopyrite leaching, Dixon and Tshilombo (2005) have developed a new process, known as Galvanox™, which has several advantages over other hydrometallurgical processes. Galvanox™ runs under atmospheric conditions, so it requires only low-cost leaching tanks. The sulfur yield at this temperature is high (>95%) which leads to low oxygen consumption and low sulfuric acid generation. The operating temperature is below the melting point of sulfur which eliminates the use of surfactants. This process also does not require fine grinding. Reaction 1 shows the overall leaching reaction in the Galvanox™ process.CuFeS2 + O2 + 2 H2SO4 = CuSO4 + FeSO4 + 2 S0 + 2 H2O (1)Complete copper recovery from the Galvanox™ process can be achieved at a considerably higher rate than other atmospheric ferric sulfate leaching processes (Dixon et al., 2008). Recycling pyrite and recovering copper from tailings with the Galvanox™ process have also been evaluated in continuous pilot leaching campaigns (Dixon et al., 2007)."

As discussed below, assuming that the costs are worth it, a patent application probably should be filed before any public disclosure is made. In general, if you do not file a patent application prior to a public disclosure, you will lose rights. Major Types of Intellectual Property In this paper, intellectual property protection is broadly discussed. Practical steps which can be taken to minimize the possibility of losing intellectual property rights (and maximizing the possibility of benefiting from your company's intellectual property) are outlined at the end of this paper. The issues discussed in this paper are somewhat complex, because a number of outcomes are possible, depending on the facts. It is strongly recommended that you seek legal advice in your jurisdiction in connection with any particular circumstances relating to intellectual property rights. "Intellectual property" refers to a number of different types of rights. The major types of intellectual property are: (i) patents; (ii) trademarks; and (iii) copyright. Trade secrets are also usually considered to be a type of intellectual property, and they are also discussed in this paper because of their importance. In general, each of these types of intellectual property protects different subject matter, although there can be some overlap. Intellectual property rights are generally territorial in nature. The scope of protection of a type of intellectual property in a country (e.g., patent protection) depends on whether the specific national requirements for protection have been met.
