"Laboratory batch flotation tests were performed on a sample of bulk slow cooled converter matte (Cu:Ni = I) to optimize the time in each of the separation stages. Numerical simulations were carried out to estimate a continuous circuit material balance for the conditions selected. An experimental simulation of a continuous circuit (locked cycle test) readily came to steady state and there was reasonable agreement between the numerical and experimental results. The use of nitrogen as the flotation gas and the addition of collector to the grinding mill minimized the oxidation of chalcocite, which has previously resulted in increasing circulating loads, and led to a stable circuit with very low weights in the recycle streams.IntroductionINCO Limited developed a flotation process for separating the components of copper-nickel matte [Sproule, Harcourt and Rose 1945; Sproule, Harcourt and Renzoni 1960] in 1945 to replace the Orford process and continues to use the flotation process in almost the original mode to this day. Initially the matte processed was the result of smelting a nickel concentrate that analyzed about 12% nickel and 2% copper and all of the recycle material that was generated in the smelting process. The matte generated analyzed about 25% copper and 53% nickel, roughly 2: 1 nickel to copper. This matte was blown in Pierce-Smith converters to be sulfur deficient in order to produce a metallic phase that collected the precious metals contained in the smelter feed [Wilson and Stratton-Crawley 1991]. This process continued with little change until 1994 when the separation of chalcopyrite from pentlandite in the Copper Cliff mill was discontinued after 63 years of operation. As a consequence of the elimination of the primary separation of chalcopyrite from pentlandite in the milling process a bulk concentrate was produced for smelting. Bulk concentrate smelting came into practice in 1994 as part of the initiative to meet government legislation that restricted the emission of sulfur dioxide to the atmosphere. Previously, the copper concentrate was smelted in an INCO oxygen flash furnace which resulted in the capture of a high strength sulfur dioxide stream from which liquid sulfur dioxide was produced. Nickel concentrate was smelted in reverberatory furnaces that produced low strength sulfur dioxide gases which were difficult to treat. The action taken by INCO to meet the environmental constraints was to smelt a bulk concentrate in oxygen flash furnaces which would produce gases suitable for the production of liquid sulfur dioxide and another stream that was high enough in sulfur dioxide to be readily converted to sulfuric acid [Bell et al 1990]. The end result of this decision was that all the copper-nickel separation would be done in the matte separation plant."

An exploration program seeking kimberlite pipes, the common primary hosts for diamonds, Was' conducted during the years 1979 through 1982 in the James Bay Lowlands of Ontario by Selco Mining Corporation (now the Mining Division of BP Resources Canada) and Esso Minerals Canada. The area to be explored was selected on the basis of its regional geological setting, and because of the known presence of kimberlite indicator minerals in the region. The primary exploration technique was low level airborne magnetic surveying, followed by detailed ground geophysics. This work located many pipe-like bodies, with diameters of a few hundred metres, as well as several dykes. Targets located by these geophysical methods were drilled, intersecting a total of45 intrusions, consisting of34 alkaline diatremes containing tuffisitic breccias, 7 carbonatites, and 4 massive alnoites. K-Ar determinations indicated ages of 152 Ma and 180 Ma for two of the massive alnoites. The texture and general mineralogy of the tuffisitic breccias are similar to those of diatreme facies kimberlites, but detailed examination of their mineralogy and chemistry demonstrated that they lie within the alnoitic rather than the kimberlitic compositional field. Although the exploration program did not lead to the discovery of true kimberlites, it did demonstrate the presence of a large, previously unknown province of alkaline volcanic activity, which has no surface expression.

"Exploration in most areas of Canada has to contend with problems posed by glacial overburden. In many areas exploration for gold has been based on the sampling of tills, frequently by deep overburden drilling, and analyses of heavy mineral concentrates. Notwithstanding the significant role that till geochemistry has played in the discovery of some important gold deposits over the last few years, increased appreciation of the nature of the glacial history and stratigraphy and the character of gold within till has led to the recognition of a number of ways whereby the effectiveness of exploration can be improved upon.In order for till geochemistry to be useful in exploration, a number of conditions must be fulfilled, including:1. mineralization, or alteration halo related to mineralization, subcropping at the bedrock/overburden interface;2. glacial erosion and dispersal of a recognizable signature of mineralization into the glacial sediments;3. preservation of glacial sediments containing this geochemical component (trace metal or mineral) at positions subsequently selected for sampling (normally drill sites);4. correct identification of specific till units and associated ice movement history;5. collection of adequately large and representative samples;6. appropriate sample preparation and processing;7. appropriate geochemical analyses; and8. correct data processing and interpretation.While we have no control over the first two geological conditions, and only limited control over till availability, we can control the quality and thoroughness of sampling, sample identification, sample preparation, analysis and interpretation. In particular attention needs to be focussed on obtaining a large enough sample to be adequately representative, an unbiased sample must be collected, together with appropriate sample processing, analysis, data processing and interpretation. It is considered that by modifying or extending existing approaches to gold exploration the chances of exploration success can be increased. In particular, analyses of both the heavy mineral and minus 63 µ m fractions of till is recommended because gold in till may occur in different size fractions."

An extensive Precambrian iron-formation lies about 2,000 ft. beneath post-Precambrian rocks in the Fort a Ia Corne Forest Reserve, south of Choiceland, Saskatchewan. The geology, deduced from limited drill results and from some geophysical observations, indicates that the deposit is a characteristic magnetite iron-formation, not uncommon in the exposed Precambrian of Saskatchewan, but also shows certain interesting features of faulting and pre-Paleozoic weathering which have given rise to a pre-served detrital deposit of hematite. The body is of ore grade and of sizeable proportions. T HIS paper is presented in order to set forth the interesting geological features of a Precambrian iron deposit located beneath the cover rocks of the Great Plains region and to comment upon the methods of discovery and interpretation of the nature of the body. Magnesium alloys have low hardness, wear, erosion and corrosion resistance. The repair of service-damaged aerospace components made of magnesium alloys is an attractive solution in terms of time and cost saving. The feasibility of applying laser beam technology to repair ZE41A-T5 magnesium alloy sand castings in the machined surface conditions was studied using a continuous wave 4 kW Nd:YAG laser system. The influence of process parameters such as laser power, cladding speed, wire feed rate and defocusing distance on the shape, size and area of single cladding beads is discussed using a process optimization software. Sound single clad beads with good geometric characteristics were obtained using strictly controlled laser process parameters. The overall results indicate that laser surface cladding using filler wire has the potential for repairing aerospace components made of cast magnesium alloys.

Mitochondria play a key role in the regulation of apoptosis (cell death) and in diseases characterised by abnormal apoptotic responses such as cancer. Mitochondrial membrane permeabilisation (MMP), regulated by the mitochondrial permeability transition pore complex, is widely accepted as being central to the process of cell death. As a result there has been considerable recent interest in targeting mitochondrial cell death pathways in the development of new chemotherapeutic agents.(1) There is potential to overcome the two overriding problems in cancer chemotherapy?the common occurrence of drug-resistant tumour cells and the lack of selectivity of cancer drugs in differentiating between tumour cells and normal tissues. Significantly, carcinoma cells have an elevated mitochondrial membrane potential relative to normal cells and lipophilic cations are concentrated within mitochondria in response to mitochondrial membrane potentials. There is potential for the selective targeting to tumour cells with compounds having optimal lipophilic-hydrophilic character. Research stemming from the early 1980?s points to two distinct classes of Au(I) phosphine antitumour agents where an antimitochondrial mode of action has been implicated: (i) neutral linear two-coordinate Au(I) complexes such as triethylphosphinegold(I) chloride and the tetraacetylthioglucose gold(I) phosphine complex, Auranofin; (ii) cationic tetrahedral bis-chelated Au(I) phosphine complexes related to [Au(dppe)2]+.(2) Recently it has been reported that Auranofin, at submicromolar concentrations, induces MMP observed as mitochondrial swelling and dissipation of membrane potential.(3, 4) Both events are completely inhibited by cyclosporin-A, the specific inhibitor of MMP. The permeability changes were shown to occur at concentrations associated with the selective inhibition of mitochondrial thioredoxin reductase.(3) Auranofin is a potent and specific inhibitor of this enzyme due to Au(I) binding to the active-site selenol group.(5) The redox state of mitochondrial thiols may be critical in the control of MMP.(3) In general, swelling is stimulated by thiol blocking or oxidising agents and is prevented by thiol reducing agents.(1) Mitochondrial thioredoxin reductase may play an import role in the redox control of the permeability of mitochondrial membranes.(3) Our interest is in investigating the antitumour potential of Au(I) phosphine compounds using a number of different approaches. In recent work we have evaluated a series of hydrophilic analogs of [Au(dppe)2]+ containing pyridylphosphine ligands which have demonstrated greater tumour selectivity than the parent compound. To investigate the possible antimitochondrial mode of action we are studying the effect of [Au(dppe)2]+ and related compounds on isolated rat liver mitochondria. To assess whether the lipophiliccationic nature of the compounds determines the antitumour activity, we have synthesized a series of novel Au(I) complexes based on heterocyclic carbene rather than phosphine ligands. The similar chemistry and structural features of the two classes of complexes allow us to assess whether the phosphine ligands are essential for the antitumour properties.

Professor H.E.T. Haultain: To me from time to time the urge comes to say the agreeable thing as well as the disagreeable in commenting on the work of others. It is a prerogative of age. I don't apologize. To myself I justify my action as based on a long experience of the matters with which I deal, and I like to tell myself that I have a certain responsibility in such matters on account of my detached position. This Noranda article is a very fine contribution concerning Canadian milling, and I am surprised that no word of commendation or thanks has appeared concerning it in the BULLETIN. There is altogether too much written in these days by men rushing into print, concerning laboratory work, that has not been tied into, nor has resulted in application in the field. The authors of this paper have not rushed into print. The preparation of this paper was evidently an uncongenial task. If the authors had been that way inclined, it could have spread over several lengthy papers. It is an important article because it represents an enormous amount of work in the laboratory and the mill, extending over a period of sixteen years, and resulting in fine metallurgical and economic results with a very difficult and involved problem. It is a fine article because it is so well prepared and presented. It deals with an unusual ore condition, but there is much in it of use to every cyanide millman. It leaves very little room for criticism, though there may be differences of opinion in regard to some of the chemistry phases with which I am not conversant. I am struck by the enormous amount of persistent, painstaking, conscientious research work involved, and in the careful, sincere way in which the methods and difficulties have been described. Persistence and sincerity are the key note of the effort. It should have a good educational effect on the rising generation of millmen, and it should continue for long as a work of reference, and a spur to others. There has been an important by-product, the training and development of the young men engaged in the work. Three of them became superintendents of important mills. One was sought for important work in Africa, another has joined a large research organization in the United States.

This paper gives an estimation of the future requirements of the western world in relation to energy re-sources. It then goes on to outline the role that atomic power -with its basic raw material, uranium -will play in supplying these energy requirements. Canada's position in this picture is covered, and some interesting forecasts are made. Introduction I T is possible that the following remarks will appear to have more to do with power than uranium. However, to fully comprehend what is in store for the Canadian uranium mining industry, we must be able to estimate the potential requirement, and, to do this satisfactorily, a thorough understanding of the circumstances that will give rise to that demand is necessary. The growing need for electrical energy will play by far the major role, as large tonnages of uranium will be required for its generation. The nuclear weapon has, up to the present, comprised the major market for uranium.

Great Bear lake, the fourth largest body of water on this continent, comprises an area of approximately 12,000 square miles, and is set astride the Arctic circle, with a large portion of it witnessing both the Arctic winter night, and the Arctic summer day with its midnight sun. The very name itself, Great Bear, suggests an Arctic region. The seasonal contrasts at Great Bear lake are very marked by the cold and darkness of winter, and the warmth and brightness of summer. Signs of winter such as low clouds, snow, sleet, fog, and night frosts, generally appear the latter part of August, while ice forming on bays during the last two weeks in September ends boat travel on the lake about September 30th.Early in June the ice leaves the river mouths, during the last ten days of the month it disappears from small bays, and at some time during the last two weeks of July the main body of the lake becomes navigable. In 1916, the ice disappeared earlier than usual, and the lake was navigable on July 5th. Great Bear river generally breaks up about June 1st, but, on account of ice cliffs and floes, it is not navigable with safety until early in July. Even then, the traveller is confronted with the Charles rapids, but these might be overcome by a wagon or motor road, such as the one from Fitzgerald to Fort Smith: However, in 1931, Mr. A. W. Boland, Fort Norman, N.W.T., carried with scow and motorboat practically all freight between Fort Norman and LaBine point and Hunter bay, at the east end of the lake. During July and August, two types of clothing are required, for, although the days are mainly ones of warm sunshine, the nights are cloudy and cold. In the winter season, fur clothing is used exclusively. Considerable timber, mainly white spruce, suitable for fuel and building purposes, borders the lake and extends eastward to the Coppermine river. North of the lake, no timber is found except in the river valleys, but with oil and coal possibilities near Fort Norman, the fuel situation might be solved.

Copper sulfide minerals such as chalcocite, bornite, and chalcopyrite exhibit high floatability, thus they can be recovered as a froth product by adding only a collector in flotation process. However, when their surface is oxidized, the floatability decreases and the simple addition of collectors is no longer effective. In this case, flotation activators are required to improve the floatability. Sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS) acts as an activator for chalcocite and bornite by re-sulfurizing their oxidized surface portions. Nevertheless, the flotation conditions still require optimization in order to achieve a satisfactory recovery of copper minerals. This work addresses the study of the effect of pH and NaHS dosage on the flotation of a complex Chilean copper ore containing chalcocite, bornite, and chalcopyrite. Flotation experiments were conducted using a Denver-type flotation cell and by investigating the effect of two NaHS dosages (50, 100 g/t) and three pH values (8, 9, 10). Following this process, the surface interaction between the minerals and NaHS were analyzed using zeta potential measurements. INTRODUCTION In recent years in the mining area of metal resources, the complexity of ores and the fineness of grind required to liberate minerals have become serious problems. When ores are complex, several valuable minerals may interact with each other and reactions may become more complicated compared with an ore containing only one valuable mineral. Therefore, more processing steps may be required than for a simple ore. When the valuable minerals exist as fine grains, it is difficult to liberate them and more grinding time is required. Furthermore, the probability of collision of fine particles with bubbles in the flotation process declines and it takes much time to recover them. Flotation is one of the most applied methods to separate valuable minerals from unwanted ones using the difference of hydrophobicity (or hydrophilicity). In the flotation method, the air is fed to a cell filled with the pulp of the mineral of interest and agitation is implemented to introduce air and generate bubbles. The hydrophobic particles attach themselves to the bubbles and float along with the bubbles while the hydrophilic particles remain in the pulp. Copper sulfide minerals such as chalcocite (Cu2S), bornite (Cu5FeS4), chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) are widely known abundant copper resources. Generally, flotation is used to recover and concentrate these minerals. Copper sulfide minerals usually have high floatability. However when their surfaces are oxidized, their floatability becomes lower. When the sulfide surfaces are oxidized, activators are added before flotation to modify the surface property of the Copper sulfide minerals so that they can be floated. Sodium hydrosulfide, NaHS, is known as one of the activators. Zhao (2018) reported that NaHS is often used as a sulfurizer for oxidized sulfide minerals (Becker (2014), Clark (2000), Newell (2006), and Newell (2007)). In earlier work, the authors performed flotation tests on a sample of Chilean copper ore which contained chalcocite, bornite, and chalcopyrite using a Denver-type flotation apparatus. The sample was ground to P80 70 µm with a rod mill and ball mill. In these tests, the following conditions were used: natural pH (about pH 8.5), flotation time of 45 min, 60 g/t AP3477 (sodium diisobutyl dithiophosphate) as collector, and MIBC (methyl isobutyl carbinol) at appropriate dosage as frother. NaHS was applied at the dosage of 0, 67, and 120 g/t, respectively at the conditioning. The concentrates were collected at 6, 18, 30, and 45 min. The weights of the concentrates and tailing were measured and they were assayed for copper by ICP-AES (Optima 5300 DV, PerkinElmer Inc.). The flotation recoveries of the copper minerals were calculated from the results of MLA (mineral liberation analyser) (MLA 650, FEI) measurements.

"The McClean uranium deposits are located 11 km west northwest of the Rabbit Lake Mine. Their average grade is 1.8 % U3O8 , and they contain 6. 350 tonnes of uranium oxide in seven pods of variable grade and mineral assemblage. They are hosted by both basal Athabasca Group and the regolith developed on the underlying crystalline basement. The major mineral facies are: sulphide, arsenide, 'bleached', and hematite, with the important uranium minerals being coffinite, uraninite and pitchblende. Abundances of carbon and sulphur isotopes are consistent with their derivation from pyritic graphite in basement gneisses. Isotopes of oxygen and hydrogen suggest equilibration at temperatures of about 200°C. Ar39/ Ar40 age determination of illite associated with ore suggest mineralization began about 1300 m.y. ago and that significant alteration had ceased by about 1170 m.y. ago though Pb/ U data suggest the deposits continued to evolve into the Mesozoic.IntroductionThe McClean deposits lie on the eastern side of the Athabasca Basin of northern Saskatchewan where they are part of a cluster of uranium deposits lying west of Wollaston Lake (Fig. 1). The general stratigraphy is schematically portrayed in Figure 2 which emphasizes that mineralization is hosted by both the Athabasca Group and the underlying regolith and also that the deposits are preserved at depth and have not suffered from preand post-Pleistocene weathering and erosion. This circumstance, combined with their simple shape and the presence of seven separate zones of mineralization (pods) allows a description, based on over 450 fully cored drill holes, to be made of the wide variation in chemistry, grade, alteration patterns and position relative to the sub-Athabasca Group unconformity. Ar39 / Ar40 age determinations have been made of illites associated with regolith, Athabasca Group and mineralization and studies are in progress on C, S, 0 and H isotopes of mineralized material and host rocks. Only some of these data have been published; Brummer et al., (1981); Golightly et al., (1982); Bray et al., (1982); and Saracoglu et al., (1983). The only other published data on McClean geology are by Tremblay (1982, 1983)."

Laronde Mine has been working for a number of years to identify substances that could contribute to process water toxicity and to find an effective way of removing these contaminants from the water. Initial studies have identified ammonia, nitrite, cyanide, thiocyanate, cyanate, dissolved organic carbon, copper and zinc as potential toxicants. Bench-scale tests were carried out with Lakefield Research to find a water treatment process that could effectively remove the suspected toxicants. Nine treatment processes were evaluated: 1) granular activated carbon (GAC) filtration followed by zeolite, 2) zeolite filtration followed by GAC filtration, 3) aeration followed by GAC filtration, 4) multi-stage GAC filtration, 5) chlorination followed by dechlorination, 6) addition of clay based polymer, 7) treatment with peroxide and ultra-violet light, 8) bulk addition of GAC and zeolite powder, 9) treatment with bacteria. This article presents a summary of the test results and of the problems associated with the evaluation of technologies for the treatment of toxicity.

In today?s environment, the availability of production equipment is a must to increase throughput and profits. For a number of mining organizations around the world, spare parts availability is key to achieving this goal. Fortunately, having less production equipment immobilized by a lack of spare parts does not equate to increases in inventory levels or in carrying costs. Advance operations research has shown a number of avenues to increase equipment availability while reducing total investment in stock. The presentation will explore these avenues by focusing on key inventory management changes that can be implemented by organizations to optimize their service and stocking levels. We have successfully applied our approaches in start-up mining projects, in mature projects and in end of life mining operations. We will illustrate our methodology using examples from our work with > 30 mining sites around the world.

"Currently, tailings water is required to be recycled in minerals processing plants. When the flotation tailings water of complex copper-sulfur-tungsten polymetallic ore is reused to the flotation of copper-sulfur ore, a portion of tungsten would be lost in copper concentrate or sulfur concentrate due to the addition of the collectors used for oxidized ore which are also effective for the sulfide minerals in the process of tungsten flotation. At the same time, the technical index of copper concentrate and sulfur concentrate would be seriously affected by tailings water. Our experimental researches of many years show that the copper concentrate with a grade of 18.36% Cu at a recovery of 76.67% is obtained for the raw ore containing 0.60% Cu, 18.99% S, 0.16% WO3 in small locked cycle test using recycled water, through simple pretreatment of the tailings water from tungsten flotation and adding special regulator CW and new tungsten collector TM. The result is close to the performance without using tailings water. And, in the continuous pilot experiment which was continuously conducted for 4 days with the same technology, the following results was obtained: the copper concentrate with a grade of 21.74% Cu, the recovery was 71.55%; the sulfur concentrate with a grade of 45.16% S, the recovery was 80.10%; the tungsten concentrate with a grade of 42.63% WO3, the recovery was 54.62% relative to raw ore (the recovery relative to scheelite was 76.47%). The throughput of the continuous pilot experiment is 1.0~1.2 t/d, and the raw ore contains 0.56% Cu, 18.80% S, 0.14% WO3 on average.INTRODUCTIONMining industry is one of the most important developing fields, it supplies raw materials for industrial production as well as discharges much waste water. Tailings water is the main source of beneficiation waste water, it would result in severe environmental pollution if discharged directly. Generally, the tailings water would bring undesirable effect on flotation index after simple pretreatment by lime (Kalin, Fyson, & Wheeler, 2006). On the other hand, the treatment of tailings water through ion-exchange (Cui & Liu, 2015) before recycling is of high cost. Generally, in the flotation of Cu-S-W polymetallic ore, when the tailings water from tungsten flotation is treated simply by lime and recycled to the flotation of sulfide minerals, the flotation index of sulfide minerals decreases, and a portion of oxide mineral would be lost in the sulfide concentrate. As a result, the recycle rate of this kind of tailings water is relatively low, some of the tailings water is discharged after simple treatment and then environmental pollution is caused subsequently. Le Camp Minier de Matagami est situé dans la ceinture volcano-sédimentaire Harricana- Turgeon appartenant à la Province du Supérieur, sous-province de l?Abitibi, au Québec. Les gisements de métaux de base polymétalliques sont retrouvés exclusivement dans les deux domaines lithotectoniques comprenant l?association basalte-rhyolite (Matagami-Brouillan et Joutel-Raymond). Tous ces dépôts, à l?exception de ceux de Selbaie, sont de type exhalatif et représentent des dépôts volcanogènes à Zn-Cu, typiques de l?Archéen. Le complexe volcanique de Matagami est constitué principalement de deux phases de volcanisme tholéïtique. Les dacites et les rhyolites du Groupe de Watson, représentent la phase la plus précoce et celles-cis sont recouvertes par la seconde phase qui est constituée majoritairement de roches intermédiares à mafiques intercalées d?horizons felsiques, formant le Groupe de Wabassee. Un sédiment chimique sulfuré, la Tuffite Clef, marque le contact et l?hiatus entre ces deux groupes. Cette tuffite est reconnue à la grandeur du flanc sud du camp minier et représente l?horizon favorable à explorer puisque sa déposition a correwspond à une période d?intense activité hydrothermale. Le complexe volcanique de Matagami est limité au nord et au sud par des bandes sédimentaires orientées est-ouest, connues respectivement sous les noms de Groupe de Matagami et Groupe de Taïbi. Le Complexe intrusif de la Rivière Bell, qui occupe la base du Groupe de Watson, est un complexe lité consistant en une séquence stratifiée gabbroïque avec localement des niveaux stratiformes à concentrations d?oxydes magmatiques, la bordure de ce complexe est marquée par la présence d?un horizon granophyrique. Cette intrusion synvolcanique prétectonique, représente probablement la source de chaleur étant à l?origine de l?activité hydrothermale observée dans les roches volcaniques sus-jacentes. Suite à un levé aéroporté, le camp minier de Matagami a vu le jour en 1956 lors de la découverte du dépôt de Mattagami Lake, un gisement volcanogène de 25.6 millions de tonnes. Depuis ce temps, un total de neuf gisements ont été exploités et un dixième, Bell Allard, est présentement en production. En date du 31 décembre 1999, la production historique du camp s?élevait à plus de 41 millions de tonnes. Cette présentation mettra l?accent sur la géologie des récentes découvertes dans le prolifique camp minier de Matagami. Les ressources publiées pour le dépôt Persévérance sont de 947,000 tonnes titrant 19.12% Zn, 1.37% Cu, 32 g/t Ag et 0.40 g/t Au. Deux autres découvertes, Équinoxe et Persévérance Ouest contibueront à la ressource globale. Les trois dépôts sont situés au niveau de la Tuffite Clef même si les roches sus-jacentes ne sont pas celles typiquement observées dans les autres dépôts du flanc sud. Ces découvertes sont le résultat d?un programme d?exploration ciblé et soutenu, démontrant ainsi la possibilité de découvrir de nouvelles ressources même dans les camps miniers comme Matagami qui ont été explorés intensivement depuis plus d?un demi-siècle.

Policy Context ?Placer Dome was committed to: ?global corporate policy of Sustainable Development, ?demonstrating that its business contributes to the economic and social progress of host jurisdictions. ?Government of South Africa was committed to ?attracting foreign investment to its mining sector with a view to modernizing and enhancing its economic and social viability, ?ameliorating the negative social consequences of structural change without arresting the necessary process of restructuring. ?National Union of Mineworkers was committed to: ?working with the mining industry and the government in implementing a Code of Good Practice on Dismissals and a Social Plan to assist retrenched mineworkers (1999).

"PREFACEThis paper comprises two parts. The first part discusses lithochemical surveys based on major, minor and trace elements in whole-rock samples from primary enveloping halos. The second part continues with discussions of surveys based on leakage halos, zonation of elements, stable and radioactive isotopic distributions, geothermometric, geobarometric, thermolumin escent, pedochemical, hydrochemical, atmochemical and biogeochemical methods. A selected bibliography follows the second part of the paper.ABSTRACTAreal (two-dimensional) geochemical surveys, based mainly on secondary dispersion halos and trains in media such as surface waters, soils and drainage sediments, have proven particularly successful in recent years and have greatly assisted in the discovery of a large number of varied mineral deposits. Three-dimensional surveys based on primary halos and leakage halos have received relatively little attention by research organizations and the mineral industry. Such surveys offer many novel approaches for discovering blind mineral deposits deeply buried below overburden or within their host bedrocks. This paper reviews detailed methods for the discovery of blind mineral deposits based on sampling rocks (lithochemical methods), soils and other types of overburden (pedochemical methods), waters (hydrochemical methods), gases (atmochemical methods) and biological materials (biogeochemical methods) . All are applicable to the discovery of blind deposits; the efficacy of each or in combination depends essentially on the type of mineralization, the extent of the development of the primary and secondary dispersion halos, and the finances available for sampling techniques employing overburden drilling, bedrock drilling, and sophisticated water, gas and vegetation collection."
