"The Gem molybdenum prospect is situated at the head-waters of Clear creek, between the Fraser river and Harrison lake, about 30 miles north of• Harrison Hot Springs, B.C. Clear creek follows a deeply eroded fault zone southwesterly through the center of the claim group. Elevations range from 2,000 feet in the creek bed up the steep slopes flanking the creek to a height of 5,500 feet. The property lies within an area underlain by schists and gneisses which strike from north to west in a broad fold plunging steeply to the northeast. This metamorphic complex has been invaded by numerous bodies of grano-diorite, much of which is gneissic. A granite plug, roughly 2,400 by 4,000 feet in size, has intruded this broad fold just west of Clear creek and encloses a circular breccia pipe 1,500 feet in diameter. In the breccia pipe, fragments of metamorphic rocks, granite and quartz monzonite porphyry are firmly cemented in a matrix of quartz monzonite porphyry. All the above rocks are cut by numerous fractures filled by vuggy quartz veins, many of which contain molybdenite. Attentien was first drawn to the area by a quartz vein, 18 inches in width, known as the Gem vein, which consists of several laminated bands of quartz and molybdenite. Since 1964, exploration efforts have been directed toward attempting to outline a large, low-grade type of molybdenum deposit."

"Onakawana Development Ltd. and Mana/ta Coal Ltd. have completed feasibility studies on a large lignite deposit located in the James Bay lowlands of northeastern Ontario. The mining plan described in this paper would supply coal for approximately a 33-year period with peak production in the early years of approximately 6.5 million tonnes per year then declining to 1.2 million tonnes in year 33. This paper describes the geology, resources, lignite quality, mine planning and related topics. LocationThe Onakawana lignite deposit is located in northeastern Ontario in the James Bay lowlands (Fig. l). The Ontario Northland Railway crosses the property and links it to Moosonee, JOO km further north, and Cochrane 180 km south. The area is crossed by latitude 50° 37', the approximate latitude of Calgary. Toronto lies 800 km south of the study area. History of Development The deposit has been known since the late 1600s when early English settlers extracted limited amounts of lignite for use at Moose Factory. The deposit has undergone sporadic periods of exploration activity in the late 1920s and early 1930s when the Ontario government drilled 116 holes, sunk two exploration shafts and published several technical and economic studies. Interest in the property was reactivated from 1939 to 1945 when the Timiskaming and Northern Ontario Railway Ltd. drilled 182 additional closely spaced holes, excavated a test pit adjacent to the rail line and installed a boiler for testing purposes. In 1965, Alberta Coal Ltd., the predecessor of Manalta Coal Ltd., first became involved. Since then a further 182 holes have been drilled and coied, and the existing test pit reopened for sampling. In 1980, various reassessment studies were launched, including geology, mine engineering, conceptual design and environmental assessment studies. Process control, mine-to-mill optimization, and other mining operations depend on having robust, comprehensive mineralogical and chemical characterization. However, current characterization methods rely primarily on analyzing samples from trenches, channels, blast holes, and drill holes and interpolating between them, and are not always sensitive to some minerals (such as clays) that cause major problems for mining and mineral processing. Continuous characterization is possible with techniques such as hyperspectral remote sensing, which measures reflectance or absorption of light in the visible to near infrared (VNIR) and short-wave infrared (SWIR) regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. Absorption and reflectance features are characteristic of different chemical bond types, so each spectrum corresponds to a different mineral or material. In remote sensing, each pixel in the scanned area has both a location and a spectrum. This makes hyperspectral remote sensing potentially useful for characterizing mine site materials. In this study, we tested a hyperspectral remote sensing system as a method of characterizing the mineralogy and material types at mine and metallurgical sites. Our test site was a small open-pit copper mine and leach operation in the southwestern U.S. We scanned mine highwalls, dump piles, leach pads, and nearby rock outcrops with drone- and tripod-mounted VNIR-SWIR spectrometers. We collected ground-truth data through geologic mapping, sampling, and spot analyses with a portable short-wave SWIR instrument. The results show that the hyperspectral remote sensing system that we tested is capable of distinguishing the types and distribution of spectrally active minerals and other materials in diverse mining settings, including showing wet and dry areas of leach pads; clay and carbonate type and distribution on mine highwalls, leach pads, dumps, and rock outcrops; plant type and distribution; fault zones, bedding planes, and other geological features; and qualitative spectral matches between dump piles and areas of the mine highwalls. Hyperspectral sensing proved particularly sensitive to the presence and type of clay and carbonate minerals, which cause geotechnical and metallurgical problems such as highwall failure, gangue acid consumption, and flotation sliming. Examples will be presented and discussed at the conference. Areas of continuing research include automating and streamlining the data reduction process, integrating hyperspectral data with block modeling and mine planning software, and testing the results of hyperspectral sensing in different geological environments.

An understanding of groundwater flow is essential for many aspects of mining. This is especially true for the process of shaft sinking through the sandstones of the Manitou Falls Group in the Athabasca Basin of northern Saskatchewan. Experience has shown that the hydraulic conductivities of these sandstones can be relatively high, especially in zones containing natural fractures. To develop a better understanding of the inflow potential into a shaft, a laboratory testing program was undertaken to investigate the hydraulic conductivity of fracture core samples from the Manitou Falls Group. This program involved the measurement of hydraulic conductivities under steady-state flow conditions, while cycling the effective confining pressure across a span that is representative of in-situ conditions. The change in fracture aperture was simultaneously recorded at each confining stress level. It was found that existing relationships relating aperture and flow did not accurately capture the behavior of the samples tested. The effects of fracture staining and infilling were also investigated, and were found to have a notable impact on the hydraulic conductivity.

"The mechanical behaviour of AA6082 is a function of the extrusion conditions and in particular, the quench rate after extrusion. It is well known that precipitation of Mg-Si phases on grain boundaries during quenching can negatively affect the ductility of the alloy. In this study, AA6082 alloys containing 0.5 wt. % Mn and 0.15 wt. % Cr were direct chill (DC) cast, homogenized and then extruded to produce 3 mm x 42 mm strips. The microstructure in the as-extruded strips was unrecrystallized due to the Zener-Smith drag from the Mn/Cr dispersoids. It was shown that a solution treatment of 5 minutes at 560°C did not significantly affecting the as-extruded microstructure but if the as-extruded strip was cold rolled prior to heating, recrystallization occurred concurrently with the solution treatment. As such, 3 initial microstructures were produced, i.e. unrecrystallized and recrystallized with a grain size of 9 and 40 µm. After the solution treatment, controlled cooling experiments were conducted using the Gleeble 3500 thermomechanical simulator with cooling rates of 10, 25, 80°C/s as well as water quenched. The mechanical properties (e.g. yield stress, fracture stress and fracture strain) were determined from tensile tests for the different combinations of initial microstructure and cooling rate. The relationship between the quench rate and precipitation of Mg-Si phases on grain boundaries was examined by FEG-SEM. It was found that the yield stress decreased as the cooling rate decreased and that there was complex relationship between the fracture properties and the microstructure.INTRODUCTION As the automotive industry strives to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions with the goal of reducing the environmental impact, there is a need for lighter vehicles. As a result, aluminum alloys are gaining popularity to replace steel parts as structural components. An exemplar of this is the Ford F-150 pickup truck which has an aluminum body and is ˜750 pounds lighter than the previous steel version of the vehicle. The structure includes a mix of aluminum sheet, extrusions and cast alloys. The current research is concerned with the performance of aluminum extrusions in applications such as side rails, crash tubes and other structural parts. These components experience a combination of bending, stretching and folding both during the forming of the part and in service, e.g. crash of a vehicle. There is a need to have detailed information on the influence of processing on final material performance, in particular the cooling rate after extrusion."

The previous survey of world copper smelters was in 2016 (Copper, 2016). The copper smelting industry has grown and improved considerably since then, including continuing growth in China and modernization in Japan (Extraction, 2018). Outotec flash smelting and Outotec flash smelting/Kennecott - Outotec flash converting continue to be adopted while newer processes continue to be adopted in China. In addition, some of the world's original flash furnaces have been completely rebuilt (Extraction, 2018). This paper provides recent industrial production data and discusses these new developments. INTRODUCTION A world copper survey was redone in 2016 after a thirteen year lag since 2003. Some of the notable changes were the significant increases in production particularly from China. Since then, several smelters have gone through modernization processes and decommissioning of older technologies. This paper will review the notable changes since the last publication at Cu2016. In the last paper, Copper Smelting: 2016 World Copper Smelter Data, the author gave an audible sigh after observing that copper smelter sites as well as new and notable smelters have been spreading like wildfire in China since 2003. Indeed, seeing is believing. Figure 1 shows the Ningde Copper Smelter (double flashing, 400,000 MT Cu/Year capacity) that started up producing copper in 2018; Figure 2 shows the Nanguo Copper Smelter that is under construction with 300,000 MT Cu/Year capacity (first phase, side blown smelting and continuous top blown converting). We should not only admire the Chinese copper industry’s significant technological developments, but also the copper price support that it has provided throughout this century.

Elk Valley Coal?s Cheviot Project is located in the Alberta foothills south of the town of Hinton. The mine has been in operation now for the 3 years. The start up and subsequent operation of the Cheviot project has been directly influenced by the Cardinal River Mine. As the Cardinal River Mine was winding down due to reserve depletion in 2004, the price of seaborne traded metallurgical coal jumped to record levels and customers began aggressively seeking new sources of supply. Several months later, the owners of Elk Valley Coal decided to begin mining at the Cheviot mining area, extending the life of the area?s operations by over 25 years. The Cheviot Project had been delayed by low coal prices, ownership changes and a complicated and lengthy regulatory process fueled in large measure by stiff opposition from a number of major environmental organizations. Chief to the startup of the project was the construction of a 23-kilometer-long haul road that would connect the new coal measures to the existing Cardinal River processing and rail facilities. Construction of this road was completed with the first coal truck making its first trip in October 2004. This paper will look at some of original assumptions, the actual mining experiences and the lessons that were learned while moving from the drawing board to the current development as it exists today.

Corrosion resistance of the lead-based anodes directly influences the purity of the final product in the zinc electrowinning process. The anodic MnO2 layer that is electrodeposited on the anodes during this process can protect the anodes against corrosion. Sand-blasted anodes generate a uniform, adherent and shiny MnO2 layer, which gradually blisters and eventually sloughs off after several weeks. In this study, we attempted to develop a new method to stabilize the MnO2 protective layer on the anodes during the electrowinning process by providing suitable nucleation sites for electrodeposition of this layer. MnO2 particles (P80=40µm) were used as seed material for this purpose. Different techniques of galvanostatic and cyclic voltammetry polarizations, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) were employed to investigate the performances of the MnO2-seeded lead anodes. The experimental results showed that growth of the MnO2 layer is influenced by the MnO2 seed particles on the anode surface. The MnO2 layers electrodeposited on the MnO2-seeded lead anodes were uniform and strongly adherent to the substrate. This layer was more stable than those formed on the PbAg anode without MnO2 seeding. This could provide the anode with a higher level of corrosion protection. Moreover, formation of undesirable MnO2 mud in the electrolyte and the rate of manganese consumption were decreased when the MnO2-seeded lead anodes were polarized. These observations could be attributed to the different properties of the electrodeposited MnO2 layer on this anode in comparison with that formed on the PbAg anode.

"Maclaren Forest Products Inc.Lime is commonly used for the neutralization of acid, and the removal of heavy metals in mine waste waters. However, the precipitation of heavy metals as hydroxides must take place under conditions of controlled pH, to produce minimum concentrations of dissolved metals. An account is presented explaining the concepts applied to lime-treatment processes at Bell Mine during the period of a supernatant discharge to Babine Lake; October 18, 1982to January 25, 1983. IntroductionBell Mine of Maclaren Forest Products Inc., Babine Mining Division, an open-pit copper mine, is located on Newman Peninsula, Babine Lake approximately 65 kilometres northeast of the town of Smithers, British Columbia (Fig. 1).A depressed market for copper metal in 1982 forced a management decision to suspend operations at the mine for an indefinite period from October 3 I, 1982. For some time prior to the mine closing date, mine management was concerned about the increasing level of supernatant in the tailings pond , and its possible effects on the stability of the dam when cycloning of mill tailings ceased. Consideration of these potential hazards led to an application being filed with the Provincial Waste Management for a permit to discharge the excess water to Babine Lake. This large lake, an important link with several significant salmon spawning sites, is a major contributor to the British Columbia commercial fishing industry. Jurisdiction for the environmental affairs in the area is shared by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, the Environmental Protection Service, and the Provincial Waste Management Branch. These agencies were directly concerned in the formulation of discharge permit following joint consultation, and exchange of information with the company on environmental concerns. An approval was finally granted to discharge approximately 1,000,000 cubic metres of supernatant from the tailings impoundment at Bell Mine into Hagan Arm, Babine Lake from October 18, 1982 with a daily discharge not to exceed 9000 cubic metres. Provisions were made that a particular discharge procedure be followed, and that the company would be responsible for setting up a sampling and monitoring program to safeguard the quality of the effluent."

Ever-increasing demands for non-ferrous metals owing to population growth and improvements in the standard of living in the world, under the constraint of limited availability of natural resources, would easily make us imagine that more efficient and sustainable developments in mining and smelting activities are required in the near future with due consideration for environmental concerns. In order to realize the efficient and sustainable development of mining and smelting activities and operations, the following issues are indispensable: (1) to investigate the up-to-date pollution control technologies of mine and smelter, (2) to promote those technologies, (3) to develop technologies which are environmentally friendly. This paper discusses the recent technologies for environmental conservation/prevention and their diffusion in the world, and also the key technologies required for the most desirable sustainable development.

Pyrrhotite-rich tailings from Sudbury, Ontario mining activities are known to contain significant amounts of EV metals, such as nickel and cobalt.  CanmetMINING has developed a novel bioleaching process for recovering the nickel and cobalt (both critical for vehicle electrification) from tailings that incorporates partial neutralization and iron removal in the bioleaching circuit; bench- and pilot-scale tests have resulted in excellent nickel and cobalt recovery over a range of temperatures.  However, this process generates a new bioleach residue, which is heavier and more voluminous than the original tailings due to pyrrhotite oxidation and jarosite formation during the bioleaching process. This residue can be problematic for long-term disposal. A possible solution being studied for this issue is using mine backfill as a disposal mechanism.  Underground backfilling allows for effective re-purposing of mine waste, however the backfill must also be able to withstand a certain load, since in most cases it is used as an underground construction material, such as in cut-and-fill mining methods.  Therefore, the composition of the mill tailings must be such that when combined with a binding agent and pumped underground, the slurry or paste is then able to withstand a certain load within a certain period of time.  Unfortunately, high-pyrrhotite content tailings, commonly found on mine sites in Ontario and Quebec, are reactive and can easily oxidize and produce acidity and/or metal-laden drainage under some disposal conditions. This means that the pyrrhotite in the tailings can lead to acid mine drainage if stored on surface, however, it can also cause strength degradation if re-purposed in too high a concentration in underground mine backfill.  The research being done at CanmetMINING related to the bioleaching process is aimed not only at recovering nickel and cobalt from mine tailings, it is also being used in an attempt to neutralize the tailings to reduce acid mine drainage and backfill strength degradation. This paper reports on research designed to evaluate different options for transforming the bioleaching process residue into iron oxide phases, for better environmental footprints if stored on surface, as well as increased disposal possible, if re-purposed as underground mine backfill material.

"Tshepong Mine, Harmony’s largest gold producing mine, is situated in the Free State portion of the Witwatersrand Basin, east of Odendaalsrus and north of Welkom, South Africa. The Basal reef is a narrow tabular conglomerate and is the main gold bearing ore body. The strata strikes mainly in a northsouth direction with an average dip of 22 degrees. Currently mining takes place at depths of between 1 690m and 2 150m below surface. The Basal reef unit consists of a conglomerate ranging between a few and 30cm in thickness. Some 80-90% of the gold occurs in the lower portion of the conglomerate. Directly above the conglomerate is a quartzite placer unit, the Basal quartzite, which is a clean, hard competent rock and varies in thickness between 50cm and 200cm. The Basal unit is overlain by the Khaki shale which can vary between 30cm and 500cm in width. It is weak and incompetent khaki coloured chloritic shale.A method of stoping, termed “undercut”, is practiced in order to remove the lower 15-20cm of the gold rich strata. The method entails removing this portion along with some 70-80cm of footwall host rock which is a strong competent quartzite. The hard competent quartzite overlying the conglomerate is left in-situ to form a competent hangingwall which can stabilize and prevent exposure of the weak Khakishale. This method of extraction was developed through trial and error and has been used reasonably successfully since its inception in the early 1960’s where the method was developed to extract the Basal reef at the Western Holdings Mines. Recently prospect drilling and a number of localised hangingwall failures indicated that the residual quartzite beam could be less than 60cm and in some instances as thin as 30cm in certain areas of the mine. The result of this is a less stable hangingwall which not only poses a safety risk to workers in these areas but also had the potential of locking up some 840 000 Tonnes of gold bearing ore. At the present gold price this amounts to revenue of approximately ZAR1.5 billion (U.S. $143 million).This paper discusses the method of “undercut stoping” and existing practices in place at Tshepong Mine. It also explores new initiatives such as the use of a simple freely-supported elastic beam solution to perform back analysis, on-site data capturing of beam thickness and support geometries in order to develop empirical design charts and numerical modelling to assist in the verification of the empirical design method."

The in-service 90/10 cupro-nickel tubes in a water-chiller system suffered from severe corrosion damage during their relatively short service life causing unexpected down time. In addition to downtime, the environmental risk associated with losing refrigerant was also a concern that initiated this investigation, Microstructural investigation using SEM and electron microprobe indicated that pitting corrosion had resulted in local nickel depletion, During the corrosion process, copper appeared to have re-deposited around the corrosion pits accelerating the local corrosion.

Abstract The techniques used in recognizing, recording, and interpreting structures in the Slocan sedimentary ceries in the West Kootenay district of B.C. are presented here in the hope that they will be of use to others working in complexly folded areas. The general pattern of folding in the Central Slocan area is obscured by lack of outcrop over a large part of the country, lack of marker horizons, local complexities of folding, and several systems of faulting. 1t was found necessary to observe and record in great detail all primary and secondary structural features and to analyse those observations on a statistical basis. The determination of bedding tops as well as bedding attitudes proved to be of fundamental importance in determining the pattern of folding. The interpretation of secondary linear and planar structures confirm:; this pattern. Accordingly, the thickness of the Slocan sedimentary series is computed to be several times that formerly postulated. Introduction The data upon which this paper is based were collected largely during the field seasons of 1947 and 1948 when the writer was employed by the British Columbia Department of Mines on detailed mapping in the Slocan mining camp. Additional observations were made by the writer during 1950 when engaged in property examinations for the Geological Survey of Canada. This presentation is largely a condensation of part of a more comprehensive thesis (5) and is restricted to observations and conclusions pertaining to the mapping of complex folds, stripped of any hypothetical discussion. Except for some unique occurrences of primary structures, there are no features or techniques described here which are not presented in standard textbooks on structural geology. It is felt that the major contribution of this paper is the method used in applying these standard techniques to a specific field problem and in interpreting the results.

This paper, a description of the new ore-unloading and stockpiling facilities at the Sydney Works of DOSCO Steel Limited, deals with a new approach to arrive at the most economical solution to combine ore unloading facilities for common bulk carriers and for different types of self-unloading vessels. Also discussed is the design and installation of a 1-mile-long steel-cord belt conveyor sys-tem with a most modern type of mobile belt conveyor stacker, along with automatic and semi-automatic controls for the entire ship-unloading and stockpiling operations.

Brannerite is commonly referred to as a refractory uranium mineral as it is usually highly resistant to acid leaching. There is however widely varying literature data on brannerite leaching, with some studies reporting that brannerite leaching can be achieved under relatively mild conditions. The differences observed for brannerite leaching are most likely due to the high degree of variation in the composition and structure observed in natural brannerites. These aspects of brannerite chemistry however are not very well understood due to a lack of fundamental research. The aims of this study were to investigate and develop methods for synthesising brannerites of varying composition and to investigate the effects of composition on brannerite leaching in acidic conditions.

IT is perhaps obvious to most individuals who are interested in the mining industry that a producing mine has been subjected to several phases of engineering attention. In this paper it is the author's hope that a thoughtful survey of these various engineering phases will emphasize certain points of value and interest which may sometimes be overlooked. The points which we will bring out are being made in an analytical sense and are not in any way a reflection on any individuals or organizations which might see in these illustrations a similarity co chair particular conditions. In other words, we are drawing on our general experience to illustrate the points which we chink are worthy of mention, and which we believe are of a type sufficiently frequent co be emphasized. It is well co point out chat, in this paper, we are not concerned with the relative importance of such theoretical questions as to whether or not a geologisc is more important than a prospector, or the office manager than the surface foreman. We are, however, interested in analyzing the various types of engineering experience required in the bringing of a mining enter-prise from the early prospect stage in co-production, and their importance to the project as a whole. In order to simplify our analysis of the subject, it has seemed best to outline a simple mining organization. In using the terms 'industry' and 'business', we feel chat frequently those engaged in mining do not always appreciate that mining is actually an endeavour, or a business, which has the same economic fundamentals as any other business. In the mining industry, the field and producing engineering are counter-parts of the research and production phases of any other type of business. Once this is realized, it is fairly obvious that mining, like any other industry, is a matter of economically acquiring raw materials, processing them, and finally marketing the resultant commodities as favourably as possible. The points may be discussed in a little more detail as follows.

"Considerable gold and silver values are lost to flotation tailing from both the South ern Tail orebody and the Main Zone orebody,The underlying mineralogical assemblage of the two ore types is quite different. This paper describes the research strategy employed to determine an economical method to scavenge gold and silver from flotation tailing.Much of the unrecovered gold in the Southern Tail ore is associated with arsenopyrite while silver losses are probably as unliberated tetrahedrite and minor silver-bearing sulphosalts. Processing alternatives tested include bulk sulphide recovery by flotation and gravity, selective pyrite-arsenopyrite separation, cyanidation, and oxidation pretreatments such as pressure leaching and bioleaching to enhance cyanidation response. Gold losses in the Main Zone ore are more closely associated with silver-bearing minerals, pyrite, and siliceous gangue and consequently respond more readily to conventional tank cyanidation. The 5 300 tid carbon-in-leach circuit to treat Main Zone flotation tailing is described in detail.IntroductionEquity Silver Mines Limited's open-pit silver mine, a 70% owned subsidiary of Placer Development Limited, is located 37 km southeast of Houston in north central British Columbia. The deposit consists of two major ore zones, Main Zone and Southern Tail (Fig. I). These zones are within a sequence of Cretaceous volcanic and sedimentary rocks striking 015 degree s and dipping 45 degrees west.
