?Ellatzite Med? is one of the biggest mining companies in Bulgaria, processing about 12,000,000 t of ore per year. Waste materials left after extraction of copper concentrate are deposited in tailings dam ?Benkovski 2?. The hydraulic structure is built according to the downstream method, through hydrocyclonization where the downstream batter and the body of the wall are formed by the separated coarse sand particles of the separated tailings. In connection with the prolonged concession of Ellatzite Med and the enlarged capacity of Benkovski 2, the tailings dam has expanded on to the surrounding terrain. To guarantee a normal hydrocyclonization and build up of a tailings wall during waste deposition from the ore mill, the technological scheme of the hydraulic transport system of Benkovski 2 has been changed.

"As real estate for new development in urban settings becomes scarce, commercial high rises are being constructed above open passenger rail tracks and vehicular roadways. Rail and roadway overbuilds are treated as tunnels requiring emergency ventilation systems for train or automobile and truck fires. The value of floor space in residential and office towers poses challenges to engineers responsible for designing fan rooms and shafts for tunnel ventilation systems within the towers. This paper describes a case study of the unique incorporation of tunnel ventilation fan plants in the overbuild structure of a passenger railyard and an adjacent roadway.INTRODUCTIONTunnel ventilation systems are required for passenger rail and transit (subway) tunnels by the NFPA 130 Standard for Fixed Guideway Transit and Passenger Rail Systems, and the NFPA 502 Standard for Road Tunnels, Bridges, and Other Limited Access Highways requires tunnel ventilation systems for vehicular (road) tunnels. Passenger rail and transit (subway) tunnels are typically ventilated with a series of shafts placed longitudinally along the tunnels to provide piston relief for normal train operations and emergency ventilation of train fires utilizing reversible axial flow fans. The shafts are incorporated in dedicated ventilation buildings that house the tunnel ventilation fans and starters, switchgear to power the fans and other equipment and systems in the building, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) to control fan operation with Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) software, and HVAC fans and ductwork to ventilate the spaces in the building. These ventilation buildings may also provide access to the tunnels below with ingress/egress stairs for use by first responders and firefighters entering the tunnels and train or transit system passengers exiting the tunnels in an emergency. "Peñoles is a mining group with integrated operations in the smelting and refining of non-ferrous metals, and is also a chemicals producer. Peñoles is the world’s foremost producer of refined silver, metallic bismuth and sodium sulphate and is the leading Latin American producer of refined gold, lead and zinc. The Met-Mex Peñoles Zinc Plant commenced operations in 1973 with an annual production capacity of 105,000 t/y. Year after year the production has been increased, and at present, the production capacity is 240,000 t/y. In this paper, the leaching process,particularly the operation of the jarosite circuit is reviewed ,specifying process improvements to treat high iron calcines.INTRODUCTIONThe purpose of the leaching process is to recover the metals, mainly zinc,through a series of extraction stages with sulphuric acid solutions, which progressively increase the zinc recovery. After the series of acidification stages,the solution, which is rich in iron, is sent to the jarosite circuit to separate the zinc from the iron (Garcia & Valdez, 1996).The first step of the leaching process is the neutral leach circuit which produces a zinc sulphate solution that is sent to the purification section for the removal of impurities such as cadmium, cobalt and copper, after this solution is sent to the tankhouse to feed the electrolytic cells."

Current trend of the global flow of strategic metals are analyzed to discuss the strategy of the development of recycling technology and alternative technology. In many cases, each global flow of metal is changing from the trilateral structure of U.S., EU and Japan in the later 20th century into the convergence to China as the factory of the world. Scrap flows are also changing dynamically. A long term change of prices of metal has gotten changed since the entrance of this century. The estimation of metal consumption up to 2050, in which the author estimated that many kinds of metal will overshoot the reserve base line, is revised considering these change of current trends.

"Significant increases in mill liner life and plant availability can be achieved by following guidelines that have evolved from over twenty years of practical experience with autogenous grinding (A0) and semi-autogenous grinding (SA0) mills. A0 and SA0 mill liner functions, performance criteria, designs, wear-resistant materials and maintenance procedures are reviewed. Operating practices that can lead to accelerated wear and breakage are discussed.IntroductionEfforts to improve the performance of liners for autogenous grinding (AG) and semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mills began as soon as the modern, large-diameter versions of these comminution machines were first intalled in commercial plants twenty years ago . While concentrators with conventional circuits were typically running at 95010 or better mill availability, many of the new autogenous and semi-autogenous circuits were struggling to achieve 80% availability. Liner maintenance, which involves not only material and labour costs but also loss of production, was quickly identified as one of the major reasons for downtime.Today, liner designs and materials have evolved to the point where virtually maintenance-free liner life of two to three years is possible in autogenous mills and one year in the more severe operating conditions encountered in semi-autogenous mills. Of concern, however, is that hard-won lessons from the past sometimes seem to be forgotten or ignored during the design of new mills and the operation of existing mills. As liner suppliers, we are often confronted with performance problems that could have been avoided by applying well-publicized guidelines for liner design and materials selection.This paper provides an overview of AG and SAG mill liner functions, criteria for evaluating performance, designs, wear-resistant materials and maintenance procedures. Also, operating conditions that can lead to accelerated wear and liner breakage are discussed in detail."

"IntroductionThe difficulties to be overcome in shaft sinking and development at depth are centred at McIntyre in and around No. 12 shaft. Generally they have been due to increasing pressures and temperatures and to changes in geological structure. This paper describes the difficulties and the measures taken to meet them.No. 12 ShaftEarly in 1932 McIntyre decided to sink an internal shaft from the deepest level, the 3875, to explore and develop known veins extending below that horizon. The location selected was a point 1,500 feet south and 1,000 feet east of No. 11 shaft, the main operating shaft through which the men, ore, and most of the materials are handled Shaft and auxiliary equipment we1e laid out for 3,000 feet, that is to 7,000 feet below the surface. The shaft was to be capable of handling 1,500 tons of ore daily from the lowest level, and was to provide ventilation, compressed air, water, and electric power to service all levels.No. 12 is an internal, vertical shaft extending from the 3875 to the 6825 level and bottoming at 7,007 feet. It is a rectangular, four-compartment shaft, 21 ft. 9¾, in. by 6 ft. 3¾ in. outside the timber (Figure 1).There are two hoisting compartments and one airway compartment, each 4 ft. 10¾ in. by 5 ft. ¾ in. inside dimensions, and a combined manway, pipe, and cable compartment 4 ft. ¼ in. by 5 ft. ¾ in. Levels have been established at 150-foot intervals, pump stations and sumps at 1,000-foot intervals, and. there are two loading pockets, one at the 5525 and the other at the 6900 level.The shaft was sunk in two stages. The first stage, consisting of preparation above the 3875 level and sinking to 5585 feet, was completed by March 31st, 1935. The second stage of deepening the shaft from 5,585 to 7,007 feet was started August lst, 1946, and completed three years later."

IT HAS BEEN KNOWN for many years that alloy steels can become brittle when tempered in the range of 350-600°C, or cooled slowly after heating to higher temperatures. The metallurgical literature reveals that blacksmiths were aware as early as 1883 that water quenching was necessary after heat treatment above 600°C to avoid brittleness. It has also been known for years that the problem is associated with trace impurities; a paper in the Journal of the Iron and Steel Institute of 1894 refers to the brittle, faceted fractures that occur in steels containing arsenic, phosphorus or sulphur. However, definitive investigation of the mechanism of embrittlement has been possible only within the last decade with the introduction of new experimental techniques to investigate surfaces, especially Auger electron spectroscopy. It is now possible to study in detail the chemistry of surfaces with a resolution of an atomic layer or two, and enormous progress has been made recently in studying the segregation of impurities to grain boundaries by exposing the boundaries by fracture inside the microscope. A clear picture of the processes occurring and their interpretation is now emerging, as was particularly clear at the recent 1977 ASM Materials Science Seminar on Interfacial Segregation held in Chicago in October. Recent research in this area has pointed the way for commercial exploitation of this new knowledge and experimental technology. It is the purpose of this article to trace progress in understanding temper embrittlement and to indicate other areas where control of interfacial segregation and its effects can be important in metallurgical applications.

Abstract -At True Hill in southwestern New Brunswick, low-grade porphyry-style Bi-Sn-Mo greisen mineralization is associated with the cupola of an epizonal granite porphyry (granite) that also exhibits three episodes of brecciation. The first episode of brecciation is an in situ, 8 m to 10 m wide transitional zone of net-veined to coarse-grained "blocky" endogranitic mesobreccia that is chloritized and greisenized and hosts weak disseminated mineralization. ln a zone doser to the host rock­ granite contact, angular fine- to coarse-grained endogranitic mesobreccia with greisenized matrix is superimposed on the earlier transitional breccia. The latest episode is fault-controlled and consists of quartz- and chalcedony-hosted subangular to rounded fine-grained "pebble" mesobreccias that crosscut and brecciate the other breccia types, as well as the adjacent altered metasedimentary country rocks. The first two episodes of brecciation are magrnatic-hydrothermal in origin related to hydrofracturing of the granite carapace and are accompanied by greisenization and mineralization, whereas the post-mineralization, silica-hosted, "pebble" mesobreccias related to hydromagrnatic, low­ temperature fluid circulation and/or boiling along faults near the contact. These magmatic­ hydrothermal and hydromagmatic mesobreccias are similar to those associated with W-Mo-Bi porphyry-greisen mineralization at the Mount Pleasant deposit.

Wear mechanisms of two commercial aluminum alloys, namely a spray formed and extruded Al-25%Si alloy, and a sand cast A390 alloy (18.5 %Si) that are known to be successful in cylinder bore technology were studied to have a better understanding of the requirements for wear resistant aluminum alloy design. From durability point of view these alloys are known to be successful for engine bore applications. It is interesting to compare the wear mechanisms in these alloys because they have significantly different silicon content and microstructures, and were produced using different techniques. The wear tests were done using a block-on-ring configuration, in controlled air atmospheres (5 % relative humidity). In spite of the differences in silicon content and microstructure, the wear mechanisms were similar and consisted of formation and destruction of hard tribolayers that are either formed by either mechanical or chemical interactions on contact surfaces. The differences in the wear rates between the two alloys arose from the differences in the hardness of the worn surfaces, and the alloy's ability to sustain the tribolayers on the worn surfaces.

"Global population is a key factor in future energy requirements, especially considering the important elements of global energy resources, electricity production, the accessibility/non-accessibility of electricity, greenhouse gas emissions and the states of nuclear reactors. Everyday human requirements depend on industrial products, and industries need a considerable amount of electricity to run. Nuclear fuel is inexpensive and bolsters industrial growth. As uranium reserves are being consumed rapidly, an alternative source of energy in the nuclear industry is thorium. Here, primary energy supplies by various sources from 1993 to 2011 as well as estimates of future needs to 2020 are discussed. This study finds that primary energy sources are mainly fossil fuels, renewables sources, and nuclear and hydro energy. In addition, growth depends on increases mainly in renewable sources.Recovery of thorium from its ores by using hydrometallurgical routes were described and discussed. The final part of this paper was presented a case study of the thorium extraction from Korean monazite ore leach liquors by using Prieme JM-T diluted in A150 diluent as an extractant system. And possible separation of the thorium from rare earths (REs) and base metals were calculated by measuring of separation factors and finally, the recovery of thorium from loaded organic of Prieme JM-T was established.THORIUM IS FUTURE NUCLEAR FUEL?Global energy consumption is increasing everyday with the high population growth, high industrialization of numerous countries and the higher level of good and services consumption that follows it. If we look at specific sectors of the economy, oil consumption grew by 0.8 million barrels per day, globally, whereas the increase was 0.4 % for natural gas and coal 1.8 % for nuclear power and just under 2.0 % for hydroelectric power (Asheley 2009). Use of renewable sources of energy for power generation and transportation increased by 3% in 2014 (BP 2015)). Thus alternative source of energy must be identified and developed to meet this increasing demand. Thorium is a potential one for the nuclear industry."

Phelps Dodge has recently operated a commercial scale, super fine grinding circuit of copper concentrates for use in a medium-temperature pressure leaching process. Two 355 kW vertical stirred mills were installed in series, targeting a grind of 80% passing 7.5 µm and 98% passing 15 µm as outlined in Phelps Dodge's concentrate leaching patent portfolio. This paper details the operation and results of the test program at Bag dad, as well as some of the operating challenges encountered.

Mining activity is increasing in northern boreal and subarctic regions of Canada. This is the case in the far north of Ontario, especially in and near the Hudson Bay Lowland (HBL). De Beers Canada opened the Victor diamond mine in the centre of the HBL in 2008, and advanced exploration and impact assessments are occurring to the west in the ?Ring of Fire? for ferrochrome, nickel/copper, iron/ vanadium and platinum-group elements, making it one of the richest mineral finds in Canada in recent years. However, the HBL is also a near-pristine, sensitive environment. Its peatlands forms the third largest wetland in the world and are globally important stores of terrestrial carbon. Human populations in the region are sparse, consisting almost entirely of First Nations communities. Local First Nations also have a strong land ethic and greatly influence mining developments. Through formal agreements, they have insisted on a gold standard for environmental management, including a small mine footprint and the return to representative native ecosystems after mine closure. However, knowledge on the revegetation of subarctic and northern boreal ecosystems is limited. Here, we are conducting research at the Victor mine to develop gold standard protocols for the revegetation of disturbed peatlands and mine waste uplands and present a summary of results. We first tested existing protocols for peatland restoration from southeastern Canada. We collected peat-forming plants from nearby muskeg, spread them sparsely over disturbed peatlands and applied a light phosphate fertilizer, but unlike southern protocols, no mulch appeared to be required to produce a representative cover of peat-forming plants within three years. A bigger challenge is the reclamation of uplands made of mine waste back to representative ecosystems. We first characterized reference conditions for uplands in the HBL, which are scarce in the region. Nearby natural uplands were divided into two classes, interior uplands and uplands along river valleys. Multiple parameters were examined at these sites including soil development, bulk density, soil chemistry in the rooting horizons, plant cover by stratum, plant species composition and dead wood. The mean condition and, more importantly, the range of these parameters allow us to set broad targets for progressive reclamation, which will facilitate success. Finally, we characterized local upland plant species through their functional traits to determine their likely abilities to colonize, grow and contribute to ecosystem processes. A classification of species by these simple functional attributes will help restoration managers to select candidate species to meet different goals at different successional stages (i.e. good versus poor dispersers or establishers). Research into these protocols remain in the early stages, but show promise that gold standards can be achieved to ensure that mining wastes can be reclaimed to productive ecosystems.

The microstructure in modified semi-solid ALTHIX (A356) alloy consists of aAl phase with Al/Si eutectic structure. Silicon phase in eutectic structure is coral like with fine fibers. The lack of good ductility in this alloy is related to the presence of silicon fibers. Accordingly many investigations have been recently conducted to modify the Si morphology through Thermomechanical processing on this alloy. In the present work an ALTHIX (A356) alloy was deformed at 450°C, 500°C and 540°C through different strain rates. Consequently the silicon fibers were broken into small particles. The results indicated that the Si particles may coarsen according to Ostwald ripening mechanism at 540°C deformed by rate of0.0005 sec-1 & 0.0001 sec-1-

HYDROMETAL is using suitable technology to reintroduce lost metal units into the industrial cycle, thereby saving resources and energy while keeping the environment cleaner. Hydrometal is treating on average 60000 t per year of complex materials through a unique hydrometallurgical recycling concept. Zn, Cu, Sn, and Pb are the most important in volume, but in the last 15 years, Hydrometal has also developed a few specific recycling treatments for the minor metals including Ge, In, Co, etc. In 2010, Hydrometal commenced the recycling of RE (Rare Earths) from wastes generated by the RE refining industry in Europe and has decided to initiate new recycling projects for the RE recovery from the magnet or glass industries. Two case studies of recycling of materials in our integrated hydrometallurgical facility (Hydrométal) in Belgium are discussed: recycling of cerium from polishing sludges; and recycling of Ni- Co from cement produced in the zinc industry.

Denison Mines Corp. (“Denison”) has a 90% interest in the Wheeler River Uranium Project (“Wheeler River”) located along the eastern edge of the Athabasca Basin in northern Saskatchewan between the Key Lake mill and the McArthur River uranium mine. The project is host to the high-grade Phoenix and Gryphon uranium deposits, discovered by Denison in 2008 and 2014 respectively, which include combined Indicated Mineral Resources of 132.1 million pounds U3O8 (1,809,000 tonnes at an average grade of 3.3% U3O8). The Pre-Feasibility Study (“PFS”), completed in accordance with NI 43-101 in September 2018, is highlighted by the selection of the In-Situ Recovery (“ISR”) mining method for the development of the Phoenix deposit, with an estimated average operating cost of $4.33 (US$3.33) per pound U3O8. Phoenix is the highest-grade undeveloped uranium deposit known globally, including Indicated Mineral Resources of 166,000 tonnes at 19.1% U3O8 for 70.2 million pounds U3O8. The paper aims to provide a summary of Wheeler River and an overview of the proposed development of the Phoenix and Gryphon deposits according to the PFS completed for the Project. Further details regarding the PFS, including additional scientific and technical information are described in greater detail in the NI 43-101 Technical Report titled "Pre-Feasibility Study for the Wheeler River Uranium Project, Saskatchewan, Canada" dated October 30, 2018 with an effective date of September 24, 2018. Gold has been mined from a variety of deposit types that range in age from Archaean to Recent. The large variability in the geological settings of the gold deposits implies transport and concentration of gold by magnetic, hydrothermal and sedimentary processes. The factors that control the concentration of gold at certain sites and the grade estimation thereof remain major topics of debate. Due to the complex nature of the Witwatersrand Basin a mineralogical study, including mineralogical, petrographic and geochemical investigation was launched on TauTona Mine in order to characterize the various reef facies. The aim of the investigation was to determine if a correlation could be found between macroscopic characteristics of the reef, hanging wall and footwall, and the microscopic nature of the ore (especially gold grade). Petrograpgic and mineralogical results indicate that a correlation exist between gold, detrital and hydrothermal sulphides, uraninite, carbon, detrital heavyminerals and phyllosilicates. No correlation exist between gold and Mg, Fe or S. It appears that clast supported reef is of higher wade than matrix supported, but more work is suggested. No correlation exists between reef thickness and grade. The reef samples had the lowest phyllosilicate content compared to the hanging wall and footwall samples with pyrophyllite the most dominant. All of the correlations diagrams showed significant scatter and suggests a multi- factorial mineralization model. Gold distribution is also controlled by sedimentary features and thus it is not possible to select a single model for the formation and distribution of gold. It is evident that both sedimentary and hydrothermal factors influenced the mineralization and gold distribution on TauTona mine. It is thus essential that all related theories be incorporated in the development of a grade prediction model.

Kinross Paracatu started the operation of the new gold processing plant in the end of 2008, being composed by one SAG mill and two ball mills. During the first year of operation the plant had several problems related to stability and throughput capacity, mainly due to low grinding efficiency of the ball mills. In this period many actions were taken to maximize the throughput rate. Among the actions are reducing the size of balls in the mills, increasing the ball charge in the SAG mill, changing cyclone configuration and return of circulating load to SAG mill. With better stability of the circuit, the second stage of improvements has begun with the objective of increasing throughput rate and also reducing operation costs. Among the actions are the optimization of ball charge in the mills and a better operational control of cyclone parts. After two years of operation was obtained a significant increase in plant capacity, but still requires the addition of a third ball mill in order to maximize the use of SAG mill, which has spare capacity.

"Risk, the product of probability and consequence, is an integral part of mining. Whether evaluating exploration priorities, determining property acquisition potential, reviewing the components of an operating mine or assessing environmental/closure issues, the concept of minimizing risk is central to economic and technically appropriate decision making.Until recently, risk evaluations have tended toward a strongly mathematical basis. With this previous trend, it was essential to establish precise probability density functions to all assessed components or issues where often little information was available. The combined effect of the seemingly complex analyses with corresponding insufficient data often resulted in either a poorly executed risk evaluation or no evaluation whatsoever; either result not acceptable for optimal decision making. This paper presents a simple and practical procedure to carry out risk assessments for the mining industry. Although simplistic in nature, the power and usefulness of the technique is immense. The basis for the procedure involves combining deterministic assessments (often “gut feel”) with appropriate probabilistic descriptors. The resulting procedure, termed Potential Problem Analyses, or PPA, can be used anywhere an evaluation of risk will assist in optimizing technical and/or economic decisions. As will be shown, a key element of the PPA procedure is the multi-disciplinary input the framework allows which makes the method ideal for a teamwork approach to decision making."

On the recent trip from Vancouver to Calgary with the President, Mr. C. C. Huston, and yourself, I had the opportunity of outlining a plan based on the following: Among the aims of the Institute are, obviously, the fostering of the confraternity of those engaged in the technical and management fields of the mining and petroleum industries. This may be achieved in a number of ways, of which, to me, the interchange of ideas and experience between different parts of Canada and different sections and divisions of the Institute appears to be one of the most important. I think you and the membership as a whole are, and have been, well aware of this. The annual tour of the President .and Secretary, particularly their visits to Branches, shows this to be true. The interchange of ideas through the medium of the BULLETIN also illustrates the point; indeed, most Institute activities are directed along these lines. I am convinced that much more could be accomplished if it became financially possible to do so. Many able and fine men are, I think, willing and anxious to give their time and energy to furthering these phases of Institute activity, but it is unfair to expect them to assume as well the financial obligations involved. Specifically, I would suggest that the following could be done if sufficient funds were available:
