THIS paper is submitted primarily to put on record the results of a number of experiments carried out at the Wingdam mine of Consolidated Gold Alluvials of B.C., Ltd., with the object of establishing a reliable method of concentration of 'wash' and a maximum recovery of gold from the concentrate. It will be generally admitted that, during the last two decades, a tremendous amount of research work has been carried out, both by private companies and Government departments, with a view to improving the technique of the recovery of gold .from quartz veins or lodes. So thorough have been these investigations that milling practice at a modern quartz gold mine is almost an exact science, carried out with meticulous accuracy. In placer mining, on the other hand, very little departure from old traditional methods can be noted, with the exception perhaps of the more modern gold dredges. This may be due to the fact that the concentration of placer gravels, up to a certain point, is comparatively easy. Only a simple equipment of sluice box and riffies seems necessary where the gold is coarse and the gravel free from clay. In the early days of placer mining, when claims were rich and fairly 5hallow, nobody worried very much about fine gold; and, if clay was present, an enlarged dump box was constructed in which the gravel was subjected to a rather desultory puddling. That large quantities of gold are lost in normal placer practice is generally admitted. Some 26 years ago, I had inspectorial charge of many bucket dredges on the Ovens river, in Australia. Occasionally it was necessary for a dredge to work through its own tailing to reach a new section, and almost without exception enough gold was recovered from these tailings to defray the total cost of moving the dredge. Since those days, the technique of gold recovery in dredging has been considerably improved and it is still receiving close attention. Outside of dredge mining, most placer operations, deep or otherwise, are as they were-notorious gold losers, paying little attention to the recovery of fine gold and taking an absurd amount of time over each clean-up. In the Cariboo district of British Columbia, the alluvial gold is usual y associated with varying quantities of black sand (magnetic) and grey sand (non-magnetic); and it can be taken as axiomatic that, if you save all the black sand and grey sand, you save practically all the gold. It is on this hypothesis that we have carried out our research work and brought our recovery system up to its present highly satisfactory standard.

"The coal reserves of the Crow's Nest Basin in British Columbia have been known since the late 1860's. The 51.0-million-long-ton (over 15 years) sale of low-volatile coking coal to Japanese steel mills, as finalized in 1968, establishes the importance of these coal reserves in the world markets.In the early stages of the exploration program, which began in January, 1967, emphasis was placed on deter-mining the reserve of underground low-pitch coal within the No. 10 or Balmer seam of the Kootenay coal forma-tion. The finding of low-cover reserves in excess of 100,000,000 tons altered the initially planned underground program. Extensive tests were performed, establishing the excellent coking characteristics of the open-cast Balmer coal. Due recognition was given to the ultimate reclamation costs of mined lands and associated spoil areas.t was determined that, to achieve the costs desired, a high productivity was necessary, requiring large mining equipment. Operating criteria were set out, based on producing 4.2 million tons of clean coal per year. To optimize recovery, the preparation plant feed size was fixed at Yi in. x 0. The initial basic design capacity of the plant was 1,000 tph. The washing plant is composed essentially of four separate cleaning sections: a dedusting section; a multi-stage heavy media cyclone section; water cyclones; and flotation cells. Subsequent to the basic program, additional sales were made of 6.0 million long tons over the initial three-year period and the plant capacity was raised to 1,400 tph through the addition of a 400-tph coarse-coal treatment section. All wet coal products from the fine coal plant will be dried in a 70-tph (water) heat dryer. A unit-train concept of coal transportation between the mine site and the Westward Terminals at Roberts Bank has been negotiated with the Canadian Pacific Railroad. Facilities at the port will include a 4,000-tph rotary car bumper, 400,000-ton clean-coal stockpiles, and a bucket reclaiming system having a total ship-loading capacity of 6,000 tph."

"The optimal profile of a rock slope under given geometry constraint is investigated by means of the upper bound method of limit analysis. The optimal condition corresponds to maximizing stability factor. It is assumed that rock failure condition is suitably described by the Hoek-Brown criterion. Genetic algorithm is applied for locating the optimal profile. The optimal profiles turn out to be concave profiles but there are heaps around the toes of the slopes. Compared with plane profiles, the percentage of increase in stability factor can reach up to nearly 50%. The key geometry parameters of the optimal profiles are provided for practical use. The new upper bound formulation is capable of computing the stability factors of slopes of any shape, thus the stability status of a slope under man-made excavation can be monitored during the whole construction period.INTRODUCTIONIn mining industry, man-made slopes are excavated to create working surfaces. It is important to optimize the slope profile in order to maximize slope stability under certain geometry constraint. For instance, when the height and width of an excavation are assigned, a plane profile AC (see in Fig. 1) is widely applied in engineering practice, but it has been proved not the best one in terms of safety (Utili & Nova, 2007; Cala, 2007). A vertical profile ABC is the one with least stability. Thus, it can be deduced that there is a profile within the domain of the rectangle ABCD providing the highest stability. Cala (2007) compared the difference of convex and concave profiles in stability using strength reduction technique. According to Cala (2007), circular concave slopes can increase the maximum slope inclination under given factor of safety. Besides, based on upper bound theory of limit analysis, Utili & Nova (2007) assumed a logarithmic spiral profile to prove it is more stable than a plane profile in terms of the stability factor. Although the above studies attempted to seek the best circular or logarithmic spiral profiles, none of them considered the arbitrary shape of the optimal profile and its contribution to enhance slope stability."

"At most operating mines, geostatistical are reserve estimation methods have been implemented by head office or consulting groups . With recent advances in small computer technology it is now possible for a remotely-located mine department to independently implement a geostatistical package.This paper describes the evolution of geostatistical routines to calculate the mineral inventory for porphyry type copper/ molybdenum or similar are bodies. The problems encountered in down sizing the geostatistical routines to run using limited minesite computing facilities are discussed. The high quality of the results, in spite of some compromises to geostatistical theory, is emphasized.The first stage entailed the development of a mineral inventory based on diamond drill data. The difficulties in fitting variogram models to two metals, copper and molybdenum, and the shortcomings of the mineral inventory due to the mixing of lesser quality exploration data with data from more recent diamond drilling are discussed.To improve the ore reserve estimates for short-term planning, a mineral inventory was produced using both the diamond drill and production blast hole drilling data. This inventory, when compared to actual grades, was found to be quite satisfactory for short-term planning. The inventory also provided a reliable data base for long range pit design and financial planning. "In natural world, some kinds of scheelite minerals are rich in molybdenum. Molybdenum exists in the crystal lattice of scheelite in the form of isomorphism, and the content of MoO3 varies from 2% to 10%. As a result, the flotability of seyrigite (scheelite with molybdenum) turns to be weaker. One seyrigite mine, which has been built for 3 years,still could not produce qualified seyrigite concentrate due to the weak flotability of seyrigite (Mo-bearing scheelite) in raw ore. In our experimental research, through adopting new seyrigite collector TA-3 and advanced mineral processing technology, the seyrigite concentrate with a grade of 65.62% WO3 at a recovery of 87.47% was obtained for the raw ore containing 0.19% WO3 and 0.074% Mo. By applying the new technical achievement, for the raw ore containing 0.272% WO3, the seyrigite concentrate assaying 68.03% WO3 with a recovery of 77.56% was obtained in industrial production.INTRODUCTIONIn natural world, some kinds of scheelite minerals are rich in molybdenum. Molybdenum exists in the crystal lattice of scheelite in the form of isomorphism, and the scheelite is changed to be seyrigite (Ca[(W,Mo)O4]) (Ma, Bian, & Wang, 2013). The content of MoO3 in seyrigite varies from 2% to 10% usually, the content of MoO3 in some of the seyrigite even reaches 34%. The flotability of seyrigite is weak (Zhang, 2007), and the seyrigite is difficult to be recovered by flotation with common collectors and regulators. One scheelite mine in Anhui China, which is a skarn type seyrigite mine, has not produced qualified concentrate yet since 3 years it has been built due to the limit of beneficiation technology. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct research on the collectors with high efficiency and developing advanced processing flow for this kind of ore."

THE Great War forced the peoples of the world to recognize the importance of the wise development and use of the world's natural resources. Not the least, and perhaps the most, important, is the world's fuel supply- solid, liquid, and gaseous. Without fuel our civilization would be impossible, and mankind would of necessity have to congregate in the torrid zones of the earth's surface for at least six months of every year. Of the three classes of fuels the solid ones are the most plentiful, as well as being the most widely distributed, since few countries are entirely devoid of solid fuels of one kind or another. Until a hundred years ago wood was the fuel most generally used in this country, but since then coal has supplanted wood as a fuel in all its uses, except in the outlying districts and among the farming communities. For many years the supply of coal was thought to be unlimited, but as years went by more thought and study were given to the world's coal resources, until today not only are the limits known, but in one instance at least their depletion is predicted to be almost within the age of living men, unless more provident methods are put into practice for their winning and utilization.

"Abstract - The Boston deposit is a recently discovered Archean lode-gold deposit located approximately 700 km northeast of Yellowknife, in the southern portion of the Hope Bay volcanic belt. Primary H2O-CO2-NaCl fluid inclusions associated with gold mineralization at Boston are of low salinity (4.6 ± 1.4 eq. wt.% NaCl, n = 182) and contain pure CO2. Homogenization temperatures of liquid-phase inclusions average 270° ± 33°C (n = 141), but some fluid inclusion assemblages contain coexisting liquid- and vapor-phase inclusions that homogenize near critical conditions, suggesting phase separation. In these groups, liquid-phase inclusions homogenized at 299° ± 25°C (n = 24), and vapor-phase inclusions homogenized at 338° ± 28°C (n = 18). These temperatures overlap within error, and a median temperature of ~320°C is taken as representative of trapping conditions within the veins. An approximate pressure of 2-3 kbar was estimated from fluid inclusion isochores at this temperature. Stable isotopic compositions of carbonate minerals from the mineralized zones range from -4.7‰ to -3.1‰ in d13C, and from 11.2‰ to 12.8‰ in d18O; quartz ranges from d18O = 12.8‰ to 14.9‰; and pyrite ranges from d34S = 2.1‰ to 3.5‰. The d18OH2O, d13CCO2, and d34SH2S values of the fluid calculated from these minerals at 320°C are 6‰-9‰, -2.4‰ ± 0.6‰, and 1.5‰ ± 0.5‰, respectively, and are intermediate between metamorphic and magmatic compositions. A unique source for the fluids cannot, therefore, be constrained from these data. Petrographic and geochemical data for the Boston deposit are consistent with data from other Archean lode-gold deposits worldwide, implying that the Boston deposit formed in a similar environment and from similar types of fluids. These results suggest that the Hope Bay volcanic belt may represent a major new mesothermal gold belt in this part of Nunavut. L'exploration géologique pour les EOP (EOP: platine, palladium, iridium, osmium, ruthénium, rhodium) requiert avant tout des méthodes appropriees à la mesure de ces élémenIs. L'approche analytique choisie doit tenir compte de plusieurs facteurs, les plus importants étant: le type de materiel analysé, sa representativite, la sensibitite de la methode et les cotits reliés à son utilisation. Dans cette optique, plusieurs démarches ana/ytiquessont possibles, toutes requérant une étape de préconcentration. L 'une des plus adéquate consiste à effectuer une préconcentration par fusion plombeuse suivie d'une analyse par émission au plasma, cette procédure permettant de mesurer Ie platine, la palladium et Ie rhodium à des couts compétitifs (15 $/échantillon). Advenant 10 presence de teneurs appréciables de l'un ou plusieurs de ces éléments, une préconcentration par fusion au sulfure de nickel suivie d 'une analyse par activation neutronique assure alors la mesure de tous les EGP ainsi que celie de l’or (90 $/échantillon). Il est important de noter que Ie nickel, ades teneurs superieures à 4%, interfère au cours de l'étape de préconcentration par fusion plombeuse, ce qui se traduit pas sous-dosage des concentrations en platine, effectivement presentes dans l'échantillon. Ainsi, les géologues à la recherche d'EPG dans des environnements géologiques riches en nickel devraient s'assurer que l'analyse utilise, au cours de l'étape de préconcentration, une fusion au sulfure de nickel.

FIELD PARTIES of the Geological Survey of Canada have, in recent years, mapped several areas east and northeast of Flin Flon (9, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15, 118) (1). In all these areas the mineral deposits show a close geographical relation to faults although the immediate control of most of the known ore deposits appears to be folded structures in the rocks (8, 11, 18, 19). Air photographs and published geological maps were studied in order to ascertain whether or not the mineral deposits in the Flin Flon-Snow Lake mineral belt as a whole show any spatial relationship to faults. It was found that most of them do show a distinct geographical association with faults, or with topographic features that may be faults. It is further apparent on air photographs that a major lineament, for composite of lineaments, follows approximately the contact between gneisses and schists of the Kisseynew complex on the north, and Amisk volcanic rocks on the south. However, this Kisseynew lineament is not continuous and, especially in the eastern half of the district, it is exceedingly irregular in plan. Parts of this lineament have been mapped as faults (9, 10, 12, 14), other parts have been shown as stratigraphic contacts (1, 2, 21, 27), and still other parts have not been studied except by reconnaissance methods. It is suggested that the Kisseynew lineament may be due to a deformed fault that extends easterly from a point about 25 miles west-northwest of Flin Flon to a point at least 10 miles northeast of Wekusko lake and that the mineral deposits.

A S far back as 1925, Brazeau Collieries, Limited, became interested in .briquetting. This was brought about by complaints from their principal customer that stack losses, due to a high percentage of fine coal in their mine run, were excessive. The Company considered oil spraying of the fines. This, after some experiments and tests had been made, was ruled out as uneconomical and impracticable. When sufficient oil to be effective was put into the fines, it caused the coal in the tender of stoker-fired engines t0 arch over the screw feeder. The Company ultimately placed their problem in the hands of the Re-search Department of the University of Alberta. Experimental work was carried on by this department over a period of more than a year. The results obtained and the experience gained in this research work were conveyed to Brazeau Collieries in a report dated October 31st, 1929, and in a supplementary report dated February 2nd, 1935. Most of the results obtained in experimenting with Brazeau coal are embodied in a brochure, reprinted from the proceedings of the Second International Conference on Bituminous Coal, Vol. 19-24-28, entitled Principles in the Briquetting of Coking and Non-Coking Bituminous Coals, by E. Stansfield and W. A. Lang. All who are interested in briquetting should read this brochure. In the writer's opinion, iris the most important treatise on the subject printed in recent years. The results given in the paper are, of course, those obtained in laboratory investigation. It was pointed out to the writer that it would be most interesting to have such results correlated with those obtained in commercial practice. In this short paper, an attempt is made to do so.

"AngloAmerican used the extractant M5640 at Mantos Blancos and Mantoverde and uses PT5050MD at Los Bronces Division, which are aldoxime and modifier blends. In the first case, the modifier is the esther TXIB, while in the second case is the tridecanol TDA. It is a well-known fact that the extractant degrades while the modifier does not and with time the oxime/modifier ratio can change significantly, depending on the operating conditions of each plant.In order to evaluate the effect of this varying modifier content in the plant organic, especially in the organic losses, a complete metallurgical test work program was conducted at laboratory and pilot plant scale by Flomin SNF, a new extractant supplier. Results showed that the addition of an aldoxime without the modifier did not affect the chemical performance of the extractant, but there was a significant decrease in the viscosity and density of the organic.Based on the results obtained in the metallurgical program, it was decided to run plant scale tests at the SX plants of Mantos Blancos and Mantoverde. In these tests, instead of adding extractant to maintain the organic inventory, CuPROMEX 3406 which is an unmodified aldoxime was added until the original oxime/modifier ratio was reached. This was obtained after 6 months of operation and since then both plants are running with the extractant CuPROMEX 3302 both supplied by Flomin SNF.In the case of Los Bronces, the pilot plant work was completed and it is programmed to run similar plant scale tests. In this case, the oxime/modifier ratio increased and TDA will be added until reaching the original ratio.The plant results obtained at Mantoverde and Mantos Blancos, together with the pilot plant test results obtained at Los Bronces, are discussed in this paper."

"The major features of the CANMET thermodynamic mine ventilation network program, developed by the Mining and Mineral Process Engineering Department of the University of British Columbia for the Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology (CANMET), are described.The program is designed for use by deep Canadian mines in planning ventilation flows where the effects of auto-compression of air, moisture lift work and natural ventilation are significant. Routines to simulate stalled fans and give an optional cost printout have been included in the program.A supplementary plotting program used to simplify data interpretation is also described.The program is described with a test data example of a deep mine. It is a valuable analytical tool which can assist ventilation engineers to simulate many alternative ventilation strategies at a low cost in a very short time.IntroductionCanadian underground mines are becoming deeper and more extensive. The use of more and larger diesel-powered equipment increases the amount of air required to be circulated in these complex systems. These effects, coupled with the increasing unit cost of the energy required for mine ventilation, require that the air is used with maximum efficiency.Optimum airflow distribution can be obtained by using network computer programs enabling engineers to plan future ventilation systems based on quantitative assessments. The programs used for deep mines must make allowance for the change of air density with depth, as the assumption of incompressible flow leads to serious errors. Natural ventilation effects may vary with depth and from part to part of the mine; this must be catered for by the program. The air moisture content changes throughout the circuit and a significant portion of the fan work may be used in removing moisture from the mine; as this work varies directly with the flow, a suitable relationship must be utilized in the program."

The instrumentation and monitoring of rock behaviour have played an important and necessary role in the practice of potash, rocksalt, gypsum, trona and coal mining. The art of rock instrumentation applied to soft rock and coal mining has progressively evolved over the past years and will surely continue to advance at a faster pace in the future as a result of the technological revolution we experience today. The development of sophisticated mine-wide data communications systems is being used for instrumentation and sensor automation, and laser, sonar and geophysics technology are being continuously adapted for rock monitoring purposes. In this paper, the author provides an overview of typical rock instrumentation used today and offers some views of the progressive evolution in rock mechanics instrumentation sophistication and design.

"The Archean Blake River Group is best known from a central volcanic complex in Rouyn-Noranda. This volcano-tectonic depression, delimited by the Hunter Creek fault to the north and the Horne Creek fault to the south, is interpreted to be a cauldron approximately 20 km in diameter. Its western and eastern boundaries are the Flavrian Plutonand the D'Alembert shear zone respectively. The complex has an exposed stratigraphic thickness of 10.5 km. Two cycles, composed of andesitic units overlain by bimodal, andesite - rhyolite units, are observed in the area, and are, in turn, overlain by an andesitic unit interpreted to be the lower part of a third cycle.The southern sector of the Blake River Group, south of the central volcanic complex, is considered to be outside the limits of the cauldron, but partly contemporaneous with it. The maximum stratigraphic thickness exposed in this area is 4 .6 km. At least two cycles occur in this sector. The oldest unit, a pre-cauldron andesitic to basaltic unit, occurs only in the southern part of the sector. In the north, two partial andesite - bimodal cycles, interpreted as contemporaneous with the cauldron volcanism, are observed.The eastern sector of the Blake River Group, east of the central volcanic complex, apparently overlies the complex. Two units are observed in this sector: a lower bimodal unit and an uper andesitic unit. The bimodal unit is coupled with the uppermost andesitic unit of the central volcanic complex to form a cycle, and the andesitic unit is considered to be the uppermost unit of the Blake River Group. The total exposed stratigraphic thickness in the sector is 2.5 km.The western sector of the Blake River Group, north and west of the central volcanic complex, is interpreted as the lateral equivalent of the complex. Three andesite - bimodal cycles are exposed in this sector, giving a total stratigraphic thickness of9 .5 km. The two lower cycles correspond directly to the central volcanic complex cycles; this correlation is facilitated by two stratigraphic marker units observed on either side of the Hunter Creek fault: the Fish-roe rhyolite flow, east of the Flavrian pluton, and a spherulitic rhyolite lapilli-tuff, west of the Flavrian pluton.Many of the volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits found in the central volcanic complex are spatially and temporally associated with synvolcanic faults, and felsic domes and feeder dykes that are the sites of felsic volcanism in the bimodal units. However, these features also occur outside the central volcanic complex, and the similarities recognized in this work between the complex and the surrounding area suggest that such deposits need not be restricted to the central volcanic complex. The presence of volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits outside the complex confirms this."

Oxygen requirement during acidic pressure oxidation of sulphide concentrates can he as high as 800 kg/(m3.h) in the first compartment of an autoclave when the total oxidation residence time is shortened to 30 minutes. To achieve such a high oxygen transfer rate while maintaining satisfactory oxygen utilization, a pilot plant campaign was launched at the Placer Dome Research Centre in 1998 to measure the oxygen mass transfer coefficient in a 5 m3 pressure vessel at a total pressure close to 500 psig with a 30 HP gassing agitator. In this paper, a great deal of information is provided on the gassing agitator, pressure vessel. measurement procedure and results. Without oxygen sparging, the oxygen mass transfer coefficient is 2 600 h-1 with a mixing power input of 5.0 kW/m3 in solution. With oxygen sparging, the oxygen mass transfer coefficient increases to 3 500 h-1 with a mixing power input of 4.0 kW/m3 in solution.

"In beneficiation process, metal ions could adsorb onto clay mineral surfaces or interact with flotation chemicals, and then result in the flotation behavior changing of desired minerals. Al(III) is the dominating ion existing in the bauxite flotation system. In this research, the adsorption behaviors of Al(III) on two silicate clay minerals (including bentonite and kaolin) were investigated by means of UV-Vis spectra, zeta potential testing and scanning electron micrograph analysis. The adsorption experiment results show that the adsorption capacity of clays for Al(III) ions increases with the initial Al(III) concentration, contact time and solution pH. There are some different adsorption behaviours for two clays. Increasing the clay concentration decreases the adsorption capacity of bentonite, while increases first then decreases for kaolin. Higher temperature favours the adsorption of Al(III) on bentonite but goes against for kaolin. The adsorption capacities of bentonite and kaolin for Al(III) respectively reach 12.48 and 0.875 mg/g at initial solution pH 5. Zeta potential results show that the adsorption of Al(III) on two clays is characterized by electrostatic attraction mechanism.INTRODUCTIONIn beneficiation process, there is inevitably a wide variety of metal ions generated from mineral crushing, mineral dissolution and water chemistry conditions. Metal ions adsorb on the mineral surfaces or interact with the beneficiation agents, affecting the flotation efficiency of desired minerals (DiFeo et al., 2001; Parolis et al., 2008; Shackleton et al., 2012; Shengo et al., 2014). Therefore, it is necessary to have a detailed investigation on the adsorption behaviour of metal ions on clay minerals.Having good ion exchange capacity and negative surface charge, the clay minerals could take up various metal ions from the mineral-water system. Bentonite and kaolin are very common aluminosilicate clays in the mineral processing system. These two clays both hold a permanent negative charge, =X- on the basal surfaces, and a smaller variable charge, =SiOH on the mineral edges (Gu & Evans, 2008; (Gu et al., 2010). Adsorption experiments are usually used to study the adsorption affinity of metal ions for clay minerals (Sen & Bhattacharyya, 2012). The adsorption of Zn(II), Cu(II) and Pb(II) onto natural bentonite showed that the adsorption amounts of metal ions increase with contact time, solution pH and metal ion concentration, but decreases with adsorbent concentration and system temperature (Sen & Gomez, 2011; Melichova & Hromada, 2013). Cr(III) adsorption on bentonite was significantly pH dependent. The adsorption process followed pseudo-second-order model and the equilibrium adsorption was consistent with Freundlich isotherm (Lollino et al., 2015). The adsorption behaviours of Pb(II), Cd(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) onto kaolin indicated that increasing pH favoured the adsorption of metal ions (Jiang et al., 2010). The adsorption of Cd(II), Cu(II), Pb(II) and Zn(II) onto kaolin showed that an ion-exchange reaction occurred at pH<7.0 and inner-sphere surface complexes were prone to form at higher pH (Srivastava et al., 2005)."

"Metallurgical extraction processes often call for the heating of aqueous slurries. Indirect heat exchangers are generally not feasible for service with high yield stress slurries because of low heat transfer rates. It is more appropriate to heat the slurry by direct contact, typically with steam as the heating medium. Although having a long and successful history, direct-contact heat transfer to aqueous slurries has been used without the support of pilot plant research. This paper provides results of the needed research, the work being done at a scale large enough to enable direct scale up to commercial operations. A pilot plant heater was constructed and tested to develop an understanding of the slurry heating process and to ensure that commercial scale heaters were appropriately sized.INTRODUCTIONPressure Leaching OperationsPressure leaching operations are often used to oxidise sulphide gold ores, or for extraction of nickel and cobalt from laterite ores with sulphuric acid. Where there is sufficient sulphur available, the exothermic pressure oxidation reactions can be self sustaining at temperatures as high as 225 ºC, without having to preheat the feed slurry. At lower sulphur levels, slurry preheating is required. This is typically achieved by utilising the flash steam released from the slurry letdown stages and contacting this directly with cold incoming slurry ahead of the autoclave. The vessels where this slurry-steam contact is made are known as heaters or condensers, with the number of pre-heat stages varying, depending on how much heat is evolved in the oxidation reaction (Mason, 1990).In nickel laterite pressure acid leaching processes, which operate between 245 and 270 ºC, the only significant exothermic reactions are those associated with dilution of sulphuric acid in the leach. As a consequence, slurry preheating with flash steam is always used commercially. In practice the number of flash steam preheating stages required varies from 1 to 3, driven by a number of factors, including other uses for flash steam and the upper temperature limit at which preheated slurry can be pumped. A diagram of a typical pressure acid leach train is shown in Figure 1.For pressure acid leaching operations and at low sulphur levels in pressure oxidation, boiler generated direct steam addition to the autoclave is required to sustain the reaction temperature. For this reason it is imperative that the flash steam – slurry heat transfer is efficient and the slurry temperature approaches that of the flash steam closely."

"The ventilation-related risks from mines with elemental sulphur include dust explosions, spontaneous combustion with emission of heat and toxic sulphur dioxide or hydrogen sulphide gases, reactions with nitrates, corrosion, acid water, and pyrophoric reactions with naked iron or other metals. Elemental sulphur will form explosive mixtures in air at lower dust concentrations and at lower ignition temperatures than coal or sulphide dusts. Potential controls include primary ventilation circuit design, control of dust deposition and static discharges, enclosing steel surfaces, inert stone dusting, FRAS ducting, humidifying the air, alternate stench gas, self-contained self-rescuers with goggles, careful siting of underground infrastructure, controls on explosives formulations and procedures, mining method selection, controls on surface temperatures and protection of equipment, careful materials selection for ventilation seals and changes to worker clothing and training.INTRODUCTIONSulphur (“Brimstone” in biblical times) is one of the world’s most important industrial feedstocks and is used in a wide range of chemical processes and industries. Until the early 20th Century, most of the world’s production of sulphur came from ‘conventional’ underground mines in Sicily (Demetra produzioni, 2006; Bellia, 2006). This was a hazardous activity. The Frasch solution mining process replaced traditional underground mining of sulphur until the late 20th Century. Most of the world’s production of elemental sulphur is now as a by-product from sour gas produced in petroleum refineries and natural gas installations (Anon, 1993). As such, there is considerable experience in understanding and managing the hazards of elemental sulphur in chemical plants and surface transport.Whilst rare, underground mines with high elemental sulphur contents (as a gangue mineral) create an unusual range of mine design and operational issues, including many ventilation-related ones. The key hazards from elemental sulphur include: primary and secondary elemental sulphur dust explosions, fires and burning (with emission of heat and sulphur dioxide or hydrogen sulphide gas), reactions with nitrates used in explosives, corrosion of steel and other metals, generation of acid water (especially at higher water temperatures), and pyrophoric reactions with naked iron (e.g., ground support, ladderways or underground fixed plant) or other metals including silver and copper (e.g., used in electrical components and equipment)."

A concise historical review is given of the Overpelt plant and the general principles of zinc hydrometallurgy are briefly outlined, together with a description of the new electrolytic zinc plant ore roasting process and, more particularly, the original Overpelt roasting process. A detailed description of the flowsheet of the zinc electrowinning plant, .with an annual capacity of 100,000 t, successfully put into operation in May 1974, is given. The treatment of the residues is performed following the goethite process ; the purification is continuous in two steps; the tank house is equipped with cells containing jumbo cathodes; the handling and stripping of the cathodes is fully mechanized. Concluding the description, some metallurgical and other features of the project are explained in detail.
