Giant Yellowknife is located 600 air miles north of Edmonton on the north shore of Great Slave Lake in the Northwest Territories. In its 24 years of operation some 7,730,000 tons of ore have been treated to yield $175,000,000 worth of gold.The gold ore occurs at irregular intervals throughout a fold-like sericite schist zone cutting Precambrian rocks. The ore is characterized by 40 to 80% quartz - carbonate and about 10% pyrite and arsenopyrite. Considerable amounts of stibnite and antimony sulpho-salts are also present. Gold is finely divided in the native state existing in complex association with the sulphides. In most instances stibnite is barren but minor values are evident on occasion. Visible native Fold, quite prevalent in the early operating years, is, practically non-existent today. It was readily apparent from mineral dressing investigations conducted in .1944 that Giant ore would be difficult to treat. By 1948 a flow sheet had been established and operations began. In the ensuing years, changing ore characteristics necessitated modifications to some process steps and complete abandonment of others. By 1962 the major metallurgical problems were solved and all that remained was the refining of operating performance to its highest level.With one or two exceptions today's operation follows the practice established by 1962 (Fig. 1 - Flowsheet).

Magnetic studies have been carried out on 88 surface and 157 underground samples from the Coronation Mine area of northern Saskatchewan. The intensity of the surface samples was compared to trace element determinations from the same locality. A good correlation was found between the titaniferous constituent of the rocks and the intensity of magnetization. From the direction of the remanent magnetism, two virtual geomagnetic poles were determined -latitude 12° 54' North, longitude 158" 17' West; and latitude 23" 42' North, longitude 163° 45' West. The sulphide ore specimens showed anisotropic susceptibility characteristics. A relationship was found between the measured maximum susceptibility values of the ore specimens and the direction of the tectonic forces which are considered to have formed the structure at the Coronation mine. Introduction T HIS paper summarizes the results of a study of the magnetic properties of samples from well-known Precambrian formations. The observed data give information for an interpretation of the magnetic field conditions in Precambrian times. The high magnetic intensity values indicate the importance of the study

This paper presents the beneficial effects of non-oxidative leaching of final and intermediate copper sulfide concentrates with sulfuric acid prior to the final cleaning stage of flotation. This unique process, combining leaching and flotation, appears to be advantageous for difficult-to-treat carbonate-bearing Polish copper ores, such as those processed in copper concentrators at KGHM Polish Copper. It was shown that after the chemical decomposition of about 70 % of the total carbonates naturally present in the flotation feed, a considerable enhancement of subsequent flotation results (both grade and recovery). The resulting products of non-oxidative leaching are solid hydrated calcium sulfate (gypsum), soluble magnesium sulfate and gaseous carbon dioxide. The beneficial effect established by the laboratory leaching tests was subsequently confirmed during a pilot plant operation treating final copper concentrate and a problematic intermediate concentrate at the Lubin concentrator.

Nonlinear time-dependent response analysis of salt cavern under extreme loads in disaster mode is of great importance to the safety and disaster prevention of gas storage group. Uncontrolled blowout is one of the extreme conditions for compressed-air cavern operation. Based on the geological structure of Jintan salt deposit, China, the numerical model of the complete process of water solution, cyclic operation, and internal pressure runaway was developed. The effects of rapid unloading on the stress filed, the progressive failure of surrounding rock, the volume convergence of storage cavern, and the ground subsidence were simulated employing an elasto-viscoplastic damage constitutive equation for rock salt. The results indicate that the damage and failure zones propagate much larger in the mudstone interlayer than in the host salt. The volume of damage and failure zones surrounding salt cavern induced by unloading process is 5~6 times that of cyclic injection and withdrawal process. The average volume convergence rate of salt cavern reaches 0.012%/d~0.013%/d, which is 6~6.5 times that induced by cyclic operation. The ground subsidence exhibits a typical funnel curve. The affected region of ground subsidence due to rapid unloading in the blowout period is about two times the maximum cavern diameters. Furthermore, double cavern analysis reveals that the interaction between adjacent caverns may be ignored so long as the pillar width is larger than two times the maximum cavern diameters.

The increasing use of electronic equipment by the Canadian Forces has increased the importance of electric power. A power source that is packed with energy and yet light, small and durable is the common request of military users. However, this needs to be achieved while also addressing the requirements of safety, reliability and low temperature performance. The potential use of fuel cells in a military environment has become a possibility in several areas in the 21st century. Some examples of power source requirements and the materials related R&D required to give better, higher energy power systems in the future will be discussed.

The paper deals with three case studies: (a) the handling of wet concentrates (5 to 8 per cent moisture) through feed bins; (b) the handling of the same product in rail cars; and (c) the handling of dry concentrates (less than 0.5 per cent moisture) through feed bins. In each case, the paper discusses the problems of rat-holing. In each of cases (a) and (c), there is a discussion on the consequent extreme variations of feed rates coming from the feeders, making automation of process control difficult to impossible. Currently available bin-flow theory and flow property tests are used as aids in redesigning the bins. The paper concludes with illustrations of the final results after the redesigned hoppers were installed and tested. There is also a discussion on the advantages of the new mass-flow bins on adjacent feeder performance.

Since closure in 1968, the Wedge Mine, situated adjacent to the Nepisiguit River in New Brunswick, has been flooding with acidic water containing toxic levels of heavy metals. Cominco Ltd. has undertaken a series of pollution control measures to mitigate the threat posed to the river quality. Included has been a successful treatment campaign in 1976 which discharged in excess of 30 million gallons of high-quality effluent from the accumulated volume of mine water. The sources of contamination have been identified as actively leaching waste dumps. A comprehensive program of permanent corrective measures has been prepared which will culminate in mine backfilling. Once completed, the unacceptable burden of water treatment in perpetuity at a non-producing property will be removed.

"I HAVE BEEN looking forward to addressing this particular audience about Trans-Canada Pipe Lines because you men, more than most, understand the problems of the pioneer. Trans-Canada Pipe Lines qualifies as a pioneer on two counts: it is certainly pioneering a completely new industry in Canada -the long-distance transmission of natural gas -and it has at least a few of the problems that are expected and normal to any pioneering venture.This morning, I’m going to try to give you a sketchy picture of our project and a brief report on its current status and our progress to date; and then a broad picture of Canadian markets for natural gas.The physical characteristics of the Trans-Canada Pipe Lines project have been discussed so often that I am not going to take the time today to quote a lot of statistics on pipe sizes, miles, tons of steel, etc. Suffice it to say that this project, estimated to cost approximately $350,000,000, will be the longest large-diameter gas pipe-line ever built anywhere.Let me try to paint a broad picture of this great national project, using only a few basic 'round' figures.First, it involves exploration for and development of the natural gas fields in Alberta and other provinces -the cost of which will run into hundreds of millions of dollars.Then comes the gathering, stripping, and cleaning of the gas before it can be delivered to Trans-Canada. This will cost close to $100 million.Next we have the Trans-Canada Pipe Lines project for transmission of the gas to Eastern markets -estimated to cost $350,000,000 during the first three to four years and making natural gas economically available to one-half the population of Canada."

"Abstract - The Meadowbank gold deposits are hosted by a series of polydeformed and metamorphosed auriferous iron formations located in the Neoarchean Woodburn Lake group, western Churchill province, Nunavut. The supracrustal rocks in the Meadowbank area consist of a thick sequence of intermediate-composition volcanic rocks with intercalated iron formation, ultramafic volcanic rocks, and quartzite to quartz arenite. U-Pb geochronology gives an interpreted age of 2711 ± 3 Ma for the host strata at Meadowbank.The intermediate volcanic rocks are predominately volcaniclastic and have a geochemical composition that is consistent with an active continental margin setting. Iron formation deposition was coeval with the intermediate volcanism, as indicated by incorporation of volcanic detritus in the chemical precipitate. The geochemistry of the iron formation indicates that it precipitated from a fluid that at one time was at high temperature (>250°C), reducing, and likely acidic. Intercalated ultramafic rocks rarely show spinifex textures and have trace element ratios that are consistent with mantle plume-related undepleted mantle asthenosphere, likely recording episodic mantle upwelling associated with rifting in an active continental margin. The contact between the ultramafic volcanic rocks and the overlying quartz arenite is a disconformity marked by a quartz pebble conglomerate. However, similar geology on the structural hanging wall and footwall of the contact suggests that the conglomerate does not represent a significant hiatus in deposition, and is more likely a prograding terriginous siliciclastic unit.Three metamorphic events are recognized. The first, M1, is a cryptic greenschist facies event that is pre-D2. The second event, M2, is a mid-greenschist to amphibolite facies, syn-D2 event. M3 is the last event recognized, and is a post-tectonic greenschist facies event that is regional but inhomogeneous in extent, possibly reflecting thermal aureoles around post-tectonic 1.7 to 1.8 Ga Nueltin granites. The structural geology of the area is complex with four phases of deformation recognized, two of which had a significant effect on the geometry of the deposit. All of these regional events are interpreted as Paleoproterozoic in age. Relationships between deformation fabrics and mineralization, as well as the overall geometry of the mineralized envelopes, suggest that the deposit formed during syn- to late-D2. Superimposed on the mineralization are D4 structural elements that postdate gold mineralization.The main control on gold mineralization is replacement of magnetite by pyrrhotite and pyrite in high-strain corridors. The composition of amphiboles and chlorites associated with gold mineralization is remarkably consistent and shows no spatial or temporal variation, suggesting that it was buffered by the iron-rich nature of the host rocks. The bulk metasomatic effect on the intermediate volcanic rocks is characterized by the addition of K2O and the loss of CaO, Na2O, and MgO, with little variation in the total iron content. The elemental losses are likely the result of destruction of feldspars, stilpnomelane, and ferroactinolite, which are relatively common in the unmineralized rocks, and the formation of sericite, chlorite, and grunerite."

The topic of the relationships between energy and particle size has had two very active periods -the first in the early thirties, when the relative merits of Rittinger's and Kick's proposals were vigorously debated; the second in the early fifties, when Bond's Third Theory was published. This second stage has produced several contributions that have provided a clearer picture of energy /size correlations in comminution. Derivations of a general relationship have been made from single-fracture experiments and from the rate of comminution, and both methods arrive at an equation of the type E = AK-11? The constant A in the equation may be regarded as a grindability parameter. In some respects, an understanding of the phenomena associated with comminution is still lacking, and research in this field should therefore be expanded. "Microwave induced cracks have the potential to enhance metal recovery from coarse sphalerite particles in heap leaching operations by creating new crack surface areas for lixiviant and enhancing value mineral exposure. The mode of fracture and the extent of mineral exposure due to microwave induced cracks have not yet been investigated. The objective of this study was to determine the extent of particle damage and mineral exposure in microwave treated particles. This was done using X-ray computed tomography (XCT) and image analysis techniques. XCT analysis was conducted on small (–5+4.75 mm), medium (–16+9.5 mm), and large (–25+19 mm) sphalerite ore particles before and after microwave treatment (MT). Geometrical properties, such as volume and surface area of each mineral phase in each particle was determined from the XCT reconstructed images using VGStudioMax image analysis software. These geometrical properties were used to calculate the interfacial areas of sulphide mineral grains in microwave treated particles before and after MT. The ratio of specific interfacial area after MT to specific interfacial area before treatment was used as an indicator of the degree of preferential grain boundary fracture. The results showed significant grain boundary fracture after MT at all sizes. For small sized particles, about 31% of the interfacial area was lost compared to 23 and 16% for medium and large particles, respectively. The results also showed an increase in the degree of mineral grain exposure of 28, 26, and 15% for small, medium, and large particles, respectively, after MT. These results provide experimental evidence supporting improved mineral exposure due to MT. INTRODUCTIONFor some years it has been suggested that microwave treatment (MT) of ores might result in preferential grain boundary fracture that would have benefits such as improved grain exposure and particle weakening. (Kingman, 2006). Most of the experimental work investigating the application of microwaves to mineral processing flow sheets has focused on assessing the benefits of applying microwave technology to flow sheets consisting of size reduction and mechanical flotation cells (Kingman et al., 2004). Experimental studies have shown that coarse crushing during tertiary grinding of microwave treated ore resulted in a better liberated coarser flotation feed (Scott, Bradshaw, & Eksteen, 2008). It has been suggested that improved liberation in milled flotation feed, was due to the presence of grain boundary fracture in microwave treated particles. However, this improvement in coarse particle liberation does not necessarily translate to a significant improvement in downstream flotation recovery (Kobusheshe, 2010). This is as a result of the size limit to the flotation of coarse material, due to detachment forces acting on particle-bubble aggregates, which increase as the particle size increases (Jameson, 2012). Current conventional, mechanically agitated flotation cells are not designed to float coarse material (Jameson, 2012). Hence it has been difficult to show the downstream processing benefits of applying microwaves to ores processed by comminution followed by flotation (Kobusheshe, 2010). It is clear from investigations carried out so far that inappropriate downstream exploitation of microwave treated ore would fail to realise a meaningful process benefit (Kobusheshe, 2010; Ali & Bradshaw, 2011)."

Abstract -The Selebi-Phikwe deposits are hosted by amphibolite to granulite facies gneisses of the Limpopo belt. The sulfide orebodies are generally stratiform and conformable to the foliation of the wallrock gneiss. Sulfide remobilization has occurred during metamorphism and has produced discordant sulfide veins, called piercement structures, which project into the hanging wall and foot­ wall gneisses. These piercement structures are compositionally similar to the stratiform sulfides, consisting mainly of pyrrhotite, pentlandite and chalcopyrite. However, texturally the piercement sulfides are coarse grained and inclusion-free, whereas the stratiform sulfides are fine grained and packed with tectonically produced wallrock inclusions. The piercement structure sulfides and adjacent stratabound sulfides were sampled and analyzed for major base metals and PGE's for comparative purposes. Most of the piercement structures were enriched in Cu, Ag and Au, whereas they were generally depleted in Ni, Co, Fe and PGE's. Changing elemental associations were observed from the stratabound sulfides and along the length of the piercement structures. This and the degree of depletion or enrichment of various major and minor elements in the sulfide piercement structures may reflect the relative mobilities of metals under metamorphic conditions. The similarities between sulfide piercement structures and the footwall Cu-POE veins in some Sudbury deposits are reviewed.

Petioles is a mining group with integrated operations in the smelting and refining of non-ferrous metals, and is also a chemicals producer. Peñoles is the world's foremost producer of refined silver, metallic bismuth and sodium sulphate and is the leading Latin American producer of refined gold, lead and zinc. The Met-Mex Petioles Zinc Plant commenced operations in 1973 with an annual production capacity of 105,000 t/y. Year after year the production has been increased, and at present, the production capacity is 240,000 t/y. In this paper, the leaching process, particularly the operation of the jarosite circuit and its effective removal of impurities such as arsenic, antimony, indium, selenium and tellurium, is reviewed.

"LocationThe Strathcona mill ofFalconbridge Limited is located in Onaping, Ontario, 50 km northwest of Sudbury.GeneralOre from the Falconbridge mines in the Sudbury Basin (Strathcona, Fraser, Onaping, Craig and Thayer Lindsley mines) is processed through the Strathcona mill with 8500 t of nickel ore and 1500 t of copper ore being treated daily. Current capacity is -3 Mt of ore at 1.8% Ni, 1.9% Cu combined grade. Custom feeds are also processed. The valuable minerals in the ore are pentlandite (FeNi)9S8, chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) with some cubanite (CuFe2S3) and very minor nickel sulphides/ arsenides. Cobalt is present mainly in solid solution in pentlandite. There are small but economically important concentrations of precious metals including platinum, palladium gold, and silver. The common non-sulphide gangue minerals are feldspar, quartz, mica, talc, and chlorite while pyrrhotite (Fe7S8) is the major gangue sulphide. The pyrrhotite contains between 0.6% and 1.2% nickel in solid solution and additional nickel as exsolved pentlandite in micron sized blebs. The nickel and copper ores are batch-crushed in a two stage dry crushing plant and then ground in separate circuits. Concentration by flotation and magnetic separation produces a nickel concentrate assaying approximately 16% nickel plus copper and a copper concentrate assaying 30% copper and 0.4% nickel. The nickel concentrate is trucked as a slurry to the Falconbridge smelter while the copper concentrate is trucked as filter cake to the Kidd Division of Falcon bridge"

This paper presents preliminary results of a project aimed at obtaining a better understanding of the genesis of gold mineralization in northern Saskatchewan using lithogeochemistry. The properties sampled were: Weedy Lake (B Zone), Waddy Lake (Komis Zone) and Wedge Lake (Twin Zone) in the La Range belt, and the Rio mine in the Flin Flon area. Although the three vein-type deposits rudied here (Weedy Lake. Waddy Lake, Rio deposit) occur in different geological situation . a common gold deposition mechanism appears to have been active at all three location . Hydrothermal fluids carrying sulphur in solution in exces of gold thio-complexes moved through fractured host-rocks until they reached a site where pyrite precipitation wa triggered. As pyrite precipitated, the a/ aAu activity ratio of the fluid decreased. until a critical thre hold was reached and gold thio-complexe were de tabilized . resulting in the co-precipitation of gold and pyrite. The conditions triggering the precipitation of pyrite appear to have been: the abundance of iron in host-rock ~ilicates at Waddy Lake. and temperature decrease upon the reaching of structural trap~ at both Weedy Lake and the Rio deposit. with additional involvement of carbonatizationrelated reactions between fluid and host-rocks for the latter. In addition to pyrite precipitation , potassic alteration of the mafic metavolcanics is observed at Waddy Lake. while at the Rio deposit, the extensive carbonatization of the host-rocks i coupled with the deposition of chlorite that may have been remobilized from the altered mafic host rocks. In both the B Zone at Weedy Lake and the Komis Zone at Waddy Lake, a di tinct vanadium signature give some clue about the direction in which the hydrothermal fluids have moved . and the interpretation made is con istent with the geological ituation in either case. As for the Wedge Lake deposits, the distinct base metals-precious metals a sociation within a sulphide-facies iron formation confirm the volcanic exhalative origin of this gold mineralization .

Predicting the geomechanical response of the shale gas material during hydraulic fracturing operation in the field needs better understanding of their geomechanical behaviour under laboratory testing. Anisotropy is considered as a critical factor during investigation and analysis of deviated boreholes, borehole stability, stress-strain and strength behaviour, generation and propagation of fracture and fluid flow. In this study, compressive elastic modulus (Ec) of the Montney shale has been investigated in two perpendicular directions: unconfined compressive strengths test was conducted on the Montney sample to measure its Ec in the vertical direction. This value then was compared to the Ec value in the horizontal plane (i.e. foliation plane) which was previously measured throughout a Brazilian test by Keneti and Wong (2011). From the results, the representative values of Ec in the vertical and in the horizontal directions were found as 25 GPa and 40 GPa, respectively. Computer tomography technique was also employed for the experimental data interpretation.

Those that are brought on stream in the future due to their competitive advantage, will continue to be pursued by lenders and equity investors alike. IntroductionProspects facing those who search for mineral wealth were described rather well more than 200 years ago by a Scottish professor of moral philosophy, who also happens to be the father of modern economics.In search for new mines, Adam Smith wrote in The Wealth of Nations, ""there seems to be no certain limits either to the possible success or to the possible disappointment of human industry"".How true that statement remains today, where we are seeing economic cyclical problems compounded by basic fundamental structural change within the mining industry.Despite the enormous advances in earth sciences during the past two centuries, the rewards of mineral exploration still remain uncertain. Even though a promising orebody is found, ultimate profitability may still depend on the vagaries of the marketplace, where large and unanticipated changes in supply, demand and prices can play havoc with the best of calculations.The Canadian mining industry has had its share of disappointment during the past few years, with savage competition, shrinking demand, declining prices, and disappearing profits. But it has also had some share of success, such as at Hernlo, which now seems certain to provide some of the lowest cost gold production in the world"

Among the known iron deposits in Canada, many are of low grade and require beneficiation to produce an acceptable blast-furnace feed. Some of the deposits have never been considered for commercial exploitation due to the lack of a suitable concentrating process. A number of deposits of this type are located in Northern Ontario. The problem in upgrading these deposits is three fold. Firstly, the iron occurs as a mixture of magnetite and hematite. Secondly, the grain size of the material can be fine to very fine. Thirdly, the complex mixture of gangue minerals, which consists invariably of silica, flaky silicates and carbonates, slimes excessively on fine grinding. Algoma's efforts to concentrate these iron-bearing materials culminated in the development of a "Selective Flocculation and Desliming Process" employing slimes removal as the sole beneficiation technique. The process was applied successfully in the laboratory using two stages of grinding and a total of seven deslimings. Prior to the removal of slimes, the iron-bearing fines were selectively flocculated from a thoroughly dispersed pulp using a modified starch as flocculant, Sodium silicate was employed as dispersant. An attempt was made to optimize some of the process variables using material from one specific iron formation near the town of Geraldton in Northern Ontario. The preparation of the starch proved most critical. This matter, and the method used to evaluate the degree of breakdown of the starch molecule, are therefore discussed in some detail.

Plant process optimization programs are often costly, both in technical effort and loss of production. Evolutionary Operation or "EVOP" is a mode of plant operation consisting of controlled cyclical changes in process conditions by which information is provided concerning potential process improvements while both volume and quality uniformity in production are maintained. Its conceptual simplicity and low cost of utilization have led to successful adoption in a variety of industrial manufacturing operations. This paper is an expository account of basic EVOP theory, the problems encountered and the organization required in applying it to a processing plant. Illustrations are provided which indicate the payoff that can result.

"Cast in place concrete shaft linings have been used in many salt and potash shafts sunk in North America over the last 100 years. A large number of these shafts have exceeded their initial design lives and as producers look to extend the life of their operational assets, maintenance costs and shaft downtime will, in many cases, continue to rise unless repair work is undertaken. Successfully implementing concrete liner repair schemes in operating salt and potash shafts is complicated due to their age, environment and time constraints during inspection, detailed design and construction. This paper outlines a general approach to the repair of concrete-lined portions of these shafts, based on lessons learned from the authors’ involvement in a recent repair project. INTRODUCTION Prior to the recent boom in potash mine construction many of North America’s potash mine shafts were entering their sixth continuous decade of production (Table 1). Of North America’s salt mines, one has been in continuous production, for nearly nine decades.As would be expected, considering the environment in which these liners operate and the age of the material, the concrete-lined sections of the shafts outlined in Table 1 have been noted by the authors to have lost both cross-sectional thickness and strength over time. Since construction, three principal factors have contributed to this loss in section/strength; (1) physical degradation (impact, freeze/thaw or rebar expansion), (2) chemical degradation from brine/water inflows (Neville 1969; Bothwell, 1972) and (3) overstressing of the liner. These factors may act in combination, in which case they can produce more significant distress than individually. Physical degradation There are three main causes of physical degradation of concrete shaft liners. The first is impact from falling debris/tools or equipment (whether large or small), which may damage specific sections of concrete lining as they fall through the shaft.
