Solid particles, especially oxides/hydroxides, develop an electrical charge on their surface when submerged in aqueous solution. Parks was able to relate PZC (point of zero charge) of an oxide to its minimum solubility and isoelectric point. Dzombak has compiled an extensive database for adsorption reactions on ferrihydrite surfaces using the double layer theory. The equilibrium calculational program, STABCAL has been used to extend the considerations of Parks and Stumm. The PZC for many hydroxides, complex oxides, and non-oxides have been investigated and the results are reported in the literature. Removal of arsenic and metals by adsorption on ferrihydrite as the substrate has been computed using ST ABCAL and the computational results are compared to experimental data. Absorbents other than ferrihydrite such as aluminum hydroxide are also discussed.

"A central composite experimental design was used to determine empirical relationships between the operating variables of a ball mill and the characteristics of the ground products. The independent variables selected for the study were the work index and size distribution of the feed material, the feed rate and the pulp density. The measured responses included product size distribution, product surface area, viscosity of pulp discharge, weight of dry solids in mill, mill time constant and emitted sonic vibrations. The ball mill was operated continuously in open circuit during each experimental run.Multivariable regression techniques were used to derive linear empirical models from the experimental results. Of the four factors studied, the grindability of the feed material significantly affected every measured response. The size distribution of the ground product was affected significantly by the feed rate and the size distribution of the feed, but not by the pulp• density. Feed throughput capacity and pulp density were significant to the viscosity of the pulp discharge, the weight of solids in the mill and the mill time constant. Significant first-and second-order models are given for the above relationships. The relation-ships between the characteristics of the sonic vibrations of the operating mill and the various dependent variables have not as yet been established."

"As hydraulic fracturing is forbidden in some countries due to its accompanying environmental pollutions, microwave fracturing was proposed as a substitute technology to enhance coal seam permeability. Its mechanism includes: on the one hand, thermal stress caused by non-uniform microwave heating leads to fracture development in coal body, which increases coal seam permeability for gas; on the other hand, moisture within the coal body that hinders gas desorption and diffusion is removed during this process. To study the effect of moisture content on fracture development under microwave irradiation, high resolution photographs were taken before and after microwave treatment. These photographs were then binarized and skeletonized. Based on the processed photographs, the total area were calculated using ImageJ. The results showed that coal samples with 0% and 25% water saturation have more variation in fracture development as compared to that of samples with 50%, 75% and 100% water saturation. This study can be very useful in gas drainage and gas control in coal mines. INTRODUCTION Coalbed methane (CBM) is a clean energy source as well as a natural hazard to underground mining (Kurnia, Sasmito, & Mujumdar, 2014; Ranathunga, Perera, & Ranjith, 2014). One of the main goals of mine ventilation is diluting methane and removing underground contaminants (Xu, Huang, Nie, Chalmers, & Yang, 2017). Coalbed methane (CBM) has to be extracted prior and during underground mining to avoid methane outburst and explosion accidents. However, with the increase of mining depth, the coal permeability decreases significantly, which makes it hard to extract the methane (Huang, Xu, Hu, Kizil, & Chen, 2018). To enhance the coal seam permeability, many CBM recovery methods have been applied on-site, such as hydraulic fracturing and enhanced coalbed methane (ECBM). However, hydraulic fracturing is restricted due to environmental concerns and ECBM is only suitable for the coal seam with relative large permeability (Bustin, Bustin, Chikatamarla, Downey, & Mansoori, 2016; Huang, Xu, Chen, & Chen, 2018; Huang, Xu, Hu, et al., 2018)."

Puisque la technologie existe pour fabriquer du remblai en pâte sans construire une usine coûteuse, il est maintenant possible d?élargir le domaine d?utilisation du remblai en pâte pour y inclure des gisements filoniens où le besoin annuel de remblai est moindre. Dans certains cas, l?utilisation du remblai en pâte pourrait permettre de réaliser d?importantes économies telles que la réduction de la dilution, la stabilité des ouvertures, la récupération d?une plus grande partie du minerai par la réduction de la taille des piliers et l?entreposage de moins de résidus à la surface. L?ampleur des économies est parfois difficile à chiffrer mais il est tout de même important d?en tenir compte lors de la décision d?utiliser du remblai en pâte puisque ce sont souvent ces économies qui seront déterminantes. Différentes méthodes d?extraction avec remblai en pâte appliquées aux mines filoniennes seront présentées. "Nickel agromining utilizes hyperaccumulator plants (“metal crops”) to extract nickel from low-grade soils, a process that yields high-grade nickel bio-ore. This feedstock is further processed into a range of nickel products. The bio-ore is relatively free of impurities that complicate the traditional processing of laterite nickel ores. In this paper, current primary nickel processing routes and proposed nickel bio-ore processing options are summarised. A novel pyro-hydrometallurgical route demonstrated at the laboratory scale is described. This process produces a precipitated nickel hydroxide product and takes advantage of the water-soluble basic compounds in the ash to minimise reagent requirements, thereby making it suitable for small-scale implementation in close proximity to the nickel farm. In this process, nickel is precipitated from the leach solution using the basic ash wash liquor. Leaching nickel from ash generated from open air burning requires strong acid and long residence times to obtain high recoveries due to its complex nature and distribution of nickel in multiple phases. This process can be improved by optimising the ashing process with respect to nickel leachability.INTRODUCTIONHyperaccumulator plants have the unique capacity to ‘biopurify’ and concentrate certain trace elements (e.g. nickel) from the soil into their biomass (Reeves 2003; van der Ent et al., 2015). Cultivating these plants as ‘metal crops’ by periodically harvesting and incinerating their biomass generates a high-grade bio-ore (Chaney et al. 1998; Li et al. 2003). This process is called phytomining or ‘agromining’ which is an emerging technology for extracting nickel from sub-economic resources (van der Ent et al., 2015). Potential near-term applications of the technology include implementation on land ahead of processing of the underlying ore-body (Willis 2015), as a mine-site rehabilitation strategy or as an alternative crop for farmers on land that is not suitable for normal food crops. In the longer term, nickel agromining could provide a significant supplement to the nickel supply chain. Critical to the success of agromining is effective bio-ore processing. Due to the unique chemical composition of this feedstock material, existing processes are not very efficient. Our current research efforts aim to develop new process options that overcome limitations of previously trialled routes. In this paper we summarise conventional nickel process routes and proposed new options for producing agromined nickel."

The concept of a computer integrated Truck MIS includes truck dispatch, truck maintenance management and truck weighing.A truck management system is only as good as the information / data bases input to it. The concept of an integrated system works best with automated data gathering. Automated data gathering provides timely and normally, the most accurate historical information/data bases. Data bases are, however, historical, which is a problem to be overcome in a computerized truck management information system, especially in regards to a truck dispatch system as loading sites / loading conditions and some dump site conditions continually change. As these changes occur, data base s must change as well, and thus the need for the continual update of data bases that the computer uses for a Truck MIS.For a truck dispatch system to achieve reliability / viability, dispatch decisions need to revolve around real time data gathered in an automated way. Integration of all truck management function s through automated data gathering lead s to the best over-all system.An integrated system is a combination of many different factors and is only as good as each factor / building block put in the system. With the proper building blocks, an integrated Truck MIS is very feasible - an MIS System that includes weighing, time and motion study, truck maintenance and maintenance management, as well as truck dispatch.Truck MISAn integrated Truck MIS provides for truck dispatch as the ultimate end result, a truly automated /integrated truck dispatch system (to function non-operator-dependent). "Abstract -Borate minerals, such as colemanite, ulexite and borax, have been reported in Tertiary continental basins of West Anatolia, Turkey, and Samos Island, Greece.Tuffaceous rocks interbedded with the borates are rich in authigenic silicate minerals such as zeolites, potassium feldspar and opal-CT, all of which have a genetic association with the borates. Chemical analyses of the tuffaceous rocks show variation in major elements due to the varying percentage of carbonaceous, detrital, and volcanic derived material.The volcanic activity in the vicinity of each particular lacustrine basin created ion-rich fluids from which a series of borates were precipitated under arid climate. Additionally, the saline-alkaline character of these fluids was responsible for the diagenesis of the silicic glass of the tuffaceous rocks, altering them to silicates and silica polymorphs."

Marathon PGM Corporation?s PGM-Cu Project in Northwestern Ontario (Figure 1.0) serves as a case study to describe the process involved in advancing a deposit from grass roots exploration to the completion of several feasibility studies and the parallel commencement of environmental permitting. Through the following examination of historical exploration activities, it is clear that these activities are directly related to economic stimulus, mostly measured by downturns in the mineral industry. Other factors that influence the success of exploration advancing to feasibility and new mine development includes the ownership of the mineral claims, which also changes under these economic influences and the crucial role of interactions between the Company, the Crown and First Nations. The Marathon PGM-Cu deposit is hosted within the Eastern Gabbro Series of the Proterozoic Coldwell Complex, which intrudes and bisects the much older Archean Schreiber-Hemlo Greenstone Belt. The sub-circular complex has a diameter of 25 km and a surface area of 580 km2 and is the largest alkaline intrusive complex in North America (Walker et al., 1993). Mineralization at the Marathon PGM-Cu deposit is part of a very large magmatic system that consists of at least three cross-cutting intrusive olivine gabbro units that comprise the Eastern Gabbro Series of the Coldwell Complex (Figure 3.2.4-3). In order of intrusion, the three gabbroic units consist of (1) Layered Gabbro Series, (2) Layered Magnetite Olivine Cumulate (LMOC) and (3) Two Duck Lake (TDL) Gabbro. The relative size and abundance of the gabbroic units decrease in the order Layered Gabbro Series>TDL Gabbro>>LMOC. Late quartz syenite and augite syenite dikes cut all of the gabbros but form a minor component of the intrusive assemblage.

Fieldwork in the Meguma of Nova Scotia and Archean equivalents shows that bedding-parallel quartz lode gold veins (LVs) commonly occur at the top of graded elastic sequences. We define a "gold cycle" (GC) by analogy with Bouma turbidites and show that most "shear zones" and "lamprophyres" correspond to the upper pelagic-pelitic (E) division. We describe GCs from Archean Chester Twp, ON; Elmhirst, ON; Bourlamaque, QC; "intrusions" and interpret them as crystal tuffs and tuff-breccias. Extensive early Archean pyroclastic volcanism is implied: the genesis of trondjhemite-tonalite-granodiorite (TTG) rocks must be re-examined. The geopetal nature and asymmetric alteration of LVs indicates genesis from sea-floor hydrothermal vents. Textures suggest that often quartz was deposited as a gel. Vent geometry (fracture, point source or diffuse seep), bottom topography and vent spacing is reflected in wade-thickness plots. GC facing directions survive metamorphism. The Bourlamaque batholith was a flat-lying sheet of quartz-feldspar-hornblende crystal tuff, and isoclinal folding has repeated one or more gold-bearing horizons. Syngenesis clarifies and simplifies LV formation with major implications for models. Exploration becomes more cost-effective. Basin analysis, whole rock geochemistry, ore lens geometry and vent spacing can be used.

The satellite-based global positioning system (GPS) has significantly changed the way site operations are carried out in surface mining. The GPS has impacted safety, productivity, fleet efficiency, and maintenance practices. However, no comparable global localization system exists for underground mines. This paper discusses recent work in the application of ideas from the mobile robotics research community to the problem of real-time vehicle positioning in underground drift networks. Related previous work recently focused on the creation of globally consistent 2D maps of underground environments that possess sufficient detail to be used for underground localization. Our current work entails the development of a GPS-like system for mobile mining equipment, with results given from both laboratory and field experiments.

This paper outlines the function of the Safety and Compensation Division of the Mining Association of British Columbia. After a general discussion of safety and the safety program now being followed in B.C., the author goes on to describe the wide-ranging aspects of compensation payments and company assessment rates. Special attention is also given to the problem of silicosis in mining operations. In appendices to the paper, the experience rating plan of the mining industry is compared to that recently adopted for the construction industry. Introduction The Mining Association of British Columbia consists of fifty-five member companies, including virtually all the producing mines as well as the larger exploration, contracting and development companies. On completion of an extensive study of safety and compensation in the mining industry, the Mining Association of British Columbia instituted a Safety and Compensation Division in 1954. "The property of McWatters Gold Mines, Limited, is in the east-central part of Rouyn township and about 6 miles east-southeast of the town of Rouyn. It includes 35 claims, the group of 5, staked originally, and 30 claims acquired in later years. The Rouyn-Val d'Or road and the Noranda Senneterre branch of the Canadian National railway both pass within a few hundred feet of the mine.The group of claims in which the mine occurs was first staked in 1922, but gold was not discovered until August 1932 when a schistose zone including veins of quartz carrying considerable free gold was laid bare in a stripped area in the northeastern part of claim R.11604. Diamond drilling undertaken in 1932, and continued into 1933, shouwd that the gold extended for at least 1,000 feet along the strike. A 3-compartment shaft was sunk to 418 feet in 1933. A mill having a capacity of 50 tons a day was constructed in 1934, and enlarged to 150 tons in 1935. Production began in 1934 and continued without interruption to June 1944. Except for a few diamond drill holes, there have been no operations on the property since that time. The maximum depth of the mine workings is 1,50) feet. A total of 368,013 tons of ore having a value of $3,946,752 and an average grade of $11.04 was mined during the years of operation.GEOLOGYThe ore mined from the property occurred within the south limb of an eastward plunging syncline of volcanics and sediments cut off on the north by the Cadillac-Bouzan Lake fault. Because the rock formations within the syncline have been severed from those outside with which they were originally continuous, their correlation is based almost wholly on lithological similarity. They include an irregular middle zone of conglomerate and greywacke underlain by north and south bands of andesite agglomerate and andesite tuff, in which lenticular bands of pillowed andesite are included."

"Pressure oxidation (POX) is one of the most common and reliable methods of processing gold-bearing sulfide concentrates. However, when processing concentrates that contain natural carbonaceous matter, substantial gold losses occur due to autoclave preg-robbing. The latter involves formation of gold chloride complexes under typical POX conditions (high temperatures, high acidity and high ORP) and subsequent sorption of these complexes by carbonaceous matter. Naturally, chloride ion plays a significant role in the process of autoclave preg-robbing; its concentration in POX solution has a well-marked effect on subsequent gold recovery during cyanidation of POX residue. The previous research done by SRC Hydrometallurgy showed that autoclave preg-robbing of gold could be significantly inhibited by the addition of mercury(II) compounds to POX slurry. The positive effect of mercury(II) was well pronounced both at high (>20 mg/L) and low (<5 mg/L) Cl concentrations in POX solution. The successful bench-scale laboratory testing was followed by pilot plant trials at Ore Test Facility in Blagoveshchensk, Russia. The present paper provides the results of these trials. The bench-scale testing results were verified; the optimum oxidizing parameters and reagent dosage were specified. The behavior of mercury (II) at POX pilot plant was found to be in good consistency with industrial practice described in the literature.INTRODUCTION Pressure oxidation (POX) is one of the most common, reliable, and commercially proven methods of processing gold-bearing sulfide ores and concentrates. However, when processing double refractory materials that contain natural carbonaceous matter, POX technology advantages are compromised by autoclave preg-robbing of gold. The latter occurs when natural organic carbon and soluble halides are both present in autoclave feed. Strongly oxidizing conditions of POX (high temperature, oxidation-reduction potential or ORP, and acidity) favor formation of gold-halide (mostly, gold-chloride) complexes, which tend to bond with carbonaceous matter. The exact nature and mechanism of this bonding is unknown, but as the result of this, cyanide is unable to leach gold from POX residue and the precious metal is lost to the tails (Axenov et al., 2014; Dimov, Chryssoulis, & Sodhi, 2003; Fomenko, Zaytsev, Pleshkov, Chugaev, & Shneerson, 2013)."

"Al-Mg-Si alloys often add small additions of e.g. Mn or Cr, to form dispersoids, which may act as nucleation sites for Mg2Si particles after homogenization. The purpose is to ensure a high density of uniformly distributed small ?’-particles, which can be dissolved during further processing prior to the final age hardening step. However, their density and spatial distribution are critically dependent on the homogenization procedure. It is therefore important to have a robust and reliable method for assessing their spatial distribution. In the present work an existing methodology for assessing spatial uniformity, the Global Shannon Entropy (GSE), has been implemented and evaluated for different dispersoid structures characterized by scanning electron microscopy. This metric is highly dependent on the parameters used, but by careful selection of adequate parameters, it can be effective in detecting non-uniformity. An important weakness with the GSE was identified, and a modification to improve on the ability to differentiate degrees of non-uniformity is suggested. To evaluate the proposed methodology, the effect of heating rate on dispersoid precipitation behaviour during homogenisation of four Al-Mg-Si alloys with different Mn/Cr-content has been investigated. The metric with the new term has demonstrated promising results, and improved the ability to differentiate degrees of spatial uniformity.INTRODUCTION Al-Mg-Si series alloys are the most common aluminium extrusion alloys and are attractive for applications in a range of sectors (e.g. construction, automotive and recently also in consumer electronics), due to their generally good combination of strength, ductility and corrosion resistance. However, their extrudability and end properties depend critically on the alloy chemistry as well as prior processing conditions. Coarse ß-AlFeSi or Mg2Si-particles typically have a detrimental effect on extrudability, while small dispersoid particles may affect recrystallization, grain growth and precipitation of Mg and Si. The strengthening potential in the final age hardening step depends strongly on the amount of Mg and Si in solid solution after extrusion. The manner in which these particles are spatially distributed will decide whether the final product will exhibit uniform properties, and the number density and sizes will determine the extent of the effect. As such, these are important characteristics."

THE iron deposits of central Labrador occur within a relatively small area, herein called the Knob Lake Iron Range, in which a northwest-trending series of low hills and ridges defines the height-of-land at the boundary between provinces of Quebec and Newfound-land. Approximately two-thirds of the deposits are in Quebec and the remainder in Labrador, with several deposits straddling the inter-provincial boundary. These deposits are being exploited in open-pit mines by the Iron Ore Company of Canada centered at Schefferville, Quebec. Since 1954 this company has produced more than 56 million tons of iron ore to become Canada's leading iron ore producer. With indicated reserves of more than 375 million tons of direct-shipping ore and large tonnages of iron formation amenable to beneficiation, this mining district is assured of a long life. This paper describes the Knob Lake iron ores and their geological settings and stresses the features that lead to a better understanding of their origin. The

"To overcome the problem that scoroditeis not stable in neutral and alkaline solutions, we proposed and investigated a synthesis method of scorodite coated in-situ with hydrated ferric oxide in the Fe(II)-As(V)-H2O system at the initial Fe(III)/As(V) molar ratios larger than 1.0.The synthesis was carried out at 90?,pH 1.5 under atmospheric pressure. During the synthesis, oxygen gas was conducted and bubbled into the system to oxidize Fe(II) ions into Fe(III)ions, and Na2CO3aqueous solution as neutralizing agent was added controllably into the system for keeping the pH constant at 1.5. In this study, three samples of scorodite were synthesized at the controlled initial Fe(II)/As(V) molar ratios of 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0, respectively. The characterizations of the samples by HRTEM, TEM/EDX, and chemical composition indicated that the particle surfaces of scorodite synthesized at the initial Fe(II)/As(V) molar ratio of 2.0 and 3.0 were coated in situ by a film of hydrated ferric oxide with the thickness of several nanometers, while the sample synthesized at the initial Fe(II)/As(V) molar ratio of 1.0 was uncoated scorodite. The TCLP and long-term leaching for the toxicity characteristic of the samples showed that scorodite coated in situ with hydrated ferric oxide was stable in a wide pH range from 3.0 to 10.0, with the arsenic concentrations in the leaching solutions less than 1.0mg/L. Nevertheless, uncoated scorodite was unstable under the conditions from weak acidity to alkalinity, with the arsenic concentrations in the leaching solutions larger than 5.0 mg/L.INTRODUCTIONArsenic pollution is a challenge for environment and health and has been an important issue for scientists (Hopkin, 1989).Arsenicis commonly associated with ores or concentrates of nonferrous metals, mainly as independent arsenic bearing minerals such as arsenopyrite (FeAsS), tennantite(Cu12As4S13), enargite (Cu3AsS4), cobaltite (CoAsS), and gersdorffite (NiAsS), realgar (As2S2), orpiment(As2S3), etc.(Matschullat, 2000; Mandal & Suzuki, 2002; Long & Peng, 2012). In the nonferrous metallurgical processes, arsenic is enriched mainly in such arsenic bearing materials as various flue dusts, residues, and anode slimes, which results in the accumulation of arsenic in the system owing to the circulation of those arsenic-bearing materials back to the system and the pollution to the environment (Harris, et al, 2003).In addition, the utilization of arsenic is limited and has been decreasing owing to its toxicity and carcinogenicity. Therefore, arsenic has to be removed from those arsenic-bearing materials and discarded safely (Dutrizac & Jambor, 1988; Monhemius & Swash, 1999; Drahota & Fillippi, 2009).In this case, how to immobilize arsenic has become a difficult problem which must be solved. Among the methods of immobilizing arsenic which have been proposed and investigated, immobilizing arsenic into a stable mineral to fix it, has been realized as a promising method and becomes a research focus(Dutrizac et al, 1987; Dutrizac & Jambor, 1988; Demopoulos et al, 1995; Fujita et al, 2008a; 2008b).Scorodite has been known as one of the best minerals for immobilizing arsenic, owing to its high stability under weak acidic condition, the arsenic content as high as 32wt%,and good crystallinity benefiting the separation of solid to liquid(Daivid et al, 1999; Zhu & Merkel, 2001). Scorodite can be synthesized from arsenic containing solutions under both hydrothermal and atmospheric conditions, and a lot of work has been done on the synthesis of scorodite and its leaching stability characterization (Filippou & Demopoulos, 1999; Gomez et al, 2011).Two plants for the immobilization of arsenic as scorodite have been putin to operation in Chile and Japan, respectively (Filippou & Demopoulos, 1999; Amir et al, 2016)."

"The mineralogical characteristics of the process streams provide key indicators to the potential improvement in the metallurgical performance. Therefore, the process mineralogy and diagnostic metallurgy have been widely used as a tool to assist the metallurgists at the operating plants. The challenge of this study was then how to characterize the diagnostic flowsheet of the minerals of interest in the process streams across the flotation circuit. The investigation from this study indicates that the minerals chematic flowsheet can visibly demonstrate the sources that caused the gold losses during the mineral processing.In this paper, we present studies of the flotation process stream samples, representing the feeds, intermediate products, final concentrate and final tails, which were produced from the flotation concentrators of Mt Carlton mine in Queensland, Australia. This study was focused on characterizing the process streams and learns how the gold in the process streams was associated with other sulphide minerals and host minerals on a size by size basis. The automatic QEMSCAN/MLA Particle Mineral Analysis (PMA) and Trace Mineral Search (TMS) were applied to identify the minerals and to detect the gold in the sized fractions of process streams. The Laser Ablation ICP-MS (LA) spot analysis, QEMSCAN EDS spot analysis and electron microprobe spot analysis were employed to identify and quantify there fractory gold concentrations in the sulphide minerals, like pyrite, and the elemental concentrations of visible gold grains. The diagnostic flowsheet of gold recoveries by the process streams, by mineral association classes and by the particle sizes were generated and discussed."

"Heap leaching of gold ores in permafrost conditions is feasible provided certain criteria are met. These criteria include relatively short heap leach residence time and the availability of waste heat.This paper describes the conceptual design of such a system for a mining operation in the North West Territories of Canada. The design includes the concept of continuous countercurrent leaching in enclosed ore heaps.Indicative capital and operating costs are given.INTRODUCTIONIn April 1984, Acres Davy McKee Engineering Inc. (ADM Eng.) in association with Ontario Research Foundation (ORF), was invited to carry out a preliminary design, cost estimate and financial analysis to assess the viability of gold heap leaching in a permafrost region in North West Territories, Canada.An orebody was being explored which could, by nature of its mineralogy, be upgraded substantially by crushing and screening in the size range of 1/4 in. to 3/4 in. It was proposed to process the screen undersize through an existing gold mill on site and to treat the oversize material in a heap leach facility to be constructed adjacent to the existing mill.Despite the formidable challenges imposed by isolation, permafrost and harsh winter conditions, the heap leach project was considered worthy of examination because of the relatively high grade of the heap leach material (> 0.1 oz/ton), very short leach times (in the range of 1 to 4 days) and the availability of substantial quantities of waste heat from the diesel generating station on site.Design challenges included the necessity to maintain the permafrost in frozen condition, to prevent freezing of ore and leach solution, to limit size of construction materials to that which could be carried in a Hercules freight plane and to contain water usage at an absolute minimum level."
