Of the twelve known ore zones on the Sunro property, acquired by Cowichan Copper Co., only the "B" and "C" orebodies of the "River Zone" had been explored sufficiently to indicate the grade and tonnage. The "B" zone was selected for initial production. The portion of this orebody above the main adit level was developed for horizontal-ring, longhole mining. Ore from the stope would be scraped directly to the coarse ore bin. The lack of a suitable mill site on surface, as well as the 8,000-ft. tramming distance, led naturally to the installation ground. I N November, 1960, a lease was obtained by Co-wichan Copper Co. Ltd. (N.P.L.) from Sunro Mines Ltd., covering the main ore (River) zone of the Sunro property. A total of twelve zones had been located on the property. Nine of these lay within the leased area. "Thickeners/clarifiers are widely used in coal preparation plants, potash processing and other mineral processing facilities. Thickeners play a very important role in slurry treatment systems to accomplish solid/liquid separation. The demand for larger plants and the increased thickener handling capacities sometime require thickener diameters as large as 200m. The development and use of high capacity thickeners makes it possible to increase the handling capacity of these thickeners by several to more than 10 times compared to conventional thickeners. Hence, for a given slurry rate, selection of a high capacity thickener will significantly reduce the footprint of the thickener. Much higher handling rate, higher concentration of underflow, clearer overflow and lower capital cost are obvious advantages of high capacity thickeners; however, some process requirements and the concerns of operational cost, especially the flocculant cost of a high capacity thickener operation, keep some engineers selecting conventional thickeners and staying away from the high capacity thickeners. Forty years after the first high capacity thickener was developed, there are still arguments in the selection of conventional thickeners or high capacity thickeners in mineral processing. The arguments will continue unless there is a clear picture of capital cost vs. operational cost for each of the thickener types. The purpose of this paper is to analyze these costs and to provide guidelines for selection of thickeners. INTRODUCTIONThickeners/clarifiers are widely used in various slurry treatment systems. For mining and mineral processing, thickeners are an integral part of the solid/liquid separation system. The feed to the thickeners are processing slurries. The fundamental mechanism for the solids/liquid separation is for the solid particles in the slurry to gravity settle inside the thickener tank. The clear water overflows from the top of the thickener tank and is typically reused in the processing circuit, and the concentrated underflow is discharged to different downstream process systems depending on the application of the thickeners. The general requirements for a thickener operation include high density of underflow and clear overflow. Since thickener operation consists of continuous feeding, overflow and discharge of underflow, the solid particles will gravity settle against an upward flow with its velocity dependent on the feed rate and the underflow discharge rate. Higher feed rates to a given thickener produce higher upward velocities. Underflow discharge is typically relatively small compared to the amount of overflow. The upward flow tends to take particles up to the overflow. Only those particles having a settling velocity greater than the upward flow velocity will possibly settle out. Hence, thickener feed rate has to be controlled so that the required overflow water clarity can be achieved."

AUTHENTIC records show that coal mining in Cape Breton dates from the year 1720, when the French military authorities obtained coal from what is now known as the Blockhouse seam, in the Morien district, for use at Louisburg, where the fortress, now of such historic interest, was being built. Thereafter, coal was mined more or less continuously, and although, for many years, in a very haphazard way, there was, on the whole, a steady growth towards a better regulation of the industry, culminating in the year 1825 with the arrival of the General Mining Association in Nova Scotia. This Company, more generally known as the G.M.A., had acquired extensive tracts in Brazil and Colombia and had also purchased the mining rights for the whole of Nova Scotia-excepting such areas as had been previously leased-the attraction being the rich veins of copper currently reported as occurring in the Province. These fabulous copper veins, upon examination, failed to materialize, but the engineer sent out to report on them returned with such good accounts of the coalfields he had seen that steps were taken immediately to investigate them. From that rime onward, the history of coal mining in Nova Scotia is one of progress and achievement. One of the first acts of the G.M.A. was to acquire the areas already leased to other concerns and develop these in a masterly fashion, employing the best machinery and talent available at that time. Such dominant control over the minerals of the Province, although it led to orderly development in the several coalfields, also, later on, resulted in restricting operations in the various coal centres to such an extent that a determined effort was put forward by the people of Nova Scotia to end such a state of affairs. Consequently, in 1857, the original lease of the G.M.A. was abrogated, the Company, however, being allowed to retain certain areas in the districts it had already developed. This opened the way for the formation of other coal-mining companies, and numbers of these immediately sprang into existence in the various coal-mining centres. In 1893, the Dominion Coal Company, Limited, was formed by the amalgamation of seven companies operating in the neighbourhood of Glace Bay, in Cape Breton. Later, in 1910, the Dominion Iron & Steel Company, Limited, obtained control of the Cumberland Railway & Coal Company, which had been formed in 1884 to acquire the rights of the two companies working in the Cumberland County coalfield.

Newmont Ghana Gold Limited's Ahafo Operation has matured from its project ramp up stage into steady state operations after three years of operation. Management focus has shifted from addressing construction and commissioning problems to optimization and improvement. This focus change has coincided with the introduction by Newmont of a Continuous Improvement (CI) program across the company which provided a project management methodology that can be used in the execution of smaller scale projects. This paper focuses on the application of CI principles at the Ahafo Plant through the discussion of several case studies that demonstrate how these principles are applied.

"Noranda's Heath Steele Mine is located 35 miles north of Newcastle in northern New Brunswick. Blasthole open stoping with partial delayed filling is the major mining method in use. The selection of stope and pillar dimensions to ensure mine stability was originally subjective. This paper describes the progress made in attempting to rationalize design.One major feature is the fracture pattern. The main orebody now being mined, the B zone, has undergone five periods of folding and each period of folding developed a family of fracture planes which are axial planar to that particular fold pattern.The other major features considered are the calculated increase in stress due to mining and depth and its relationship to measured strain. Experience has shown that ground problems affecting production have usually originated in rib pillars. Field observations of ground deterioration and multi-wire extensometer measurements of strain are tabulated together chronologically for each pillar.A factor representing stress and a common plane of weakness are identified. Graphical analysis is used to determine the effect of the plane of weakness on a typical stress/strain curve and provides a base for the design of pillars."

Current practices in electrolytic winning and refining of copper , nickel and zinc are reviewed from the point of view of their respective energy requirements. The electrical energy requirements of these processes are broken down in to the individual components, which belong to two basic categories: (a) thermodynamic energy requirements (G of the desired reaction) : (b) energy losses (anode and cathode polarizations, ohmic drops in the electrolyte and in the cell hardware, energy losses due to unwanted side reactions and electrical shorts). The individual energy components are separately examined for each electrolytic process and the potential for energy saving in these processes is discussed. It is shown that many potential energy-saving measures are uneconomical at the present time, as they increase over-all operating costs. The discussion is focused on those approaches which hold most promise for the future.

A mine is an aggressive environment for electronic equipment and as such only the best quality equipment can perform under those special conditions of e.g. temperature, dust and humidity. Siemens Canada and its partner LComm will discuss a mining solution using a unique combination of technologies based on fibre optics, standard communication interfaces, passive antenna infrastructure and wireless services. The presentation looks at maximizing the use of infrastructure, reducing costs, addressing difficulty of communications coverage above and below the surface and the capability to future proof the capital investment as new requirements and applications are identified. Corus Umuiden, formerly Hoogovens, was the first steel plant in Europe after Voest to introduce oxygen steelmaking. In the decision-making process contacts with Dofasco in Canada about the production of formability steel grades were crucial. In developing oxygen (LD-) steelmaking high liquid steel output rates had to be combined with accurate process control. For ingot casting static models with input control and sampling during interrupted blowing were sufficient to deliver liquid steel within the required carbon, phosphorus, sulphur and temperature windows. Computers were introduced to perform the complicated charge calculations. Continuous casting called for strict control of composition and temperature at process end point and made predictable timing crucial. Dynamic control was introduced based upon sub lance measurements and waste gas analysis. Reliable disposable measurement sensors were developed in a concerted international action. Dissolved oxygen at blow end deteriorated the quality of low carbon aluminium killed steel grades. Blowing gases through the converter bottom improved process kinetics, resulting in lower carbon-oxygen products, yield increase and better phosphorus removal and generated new families of hybrid blowing processes. Introduction of secondary metallurgy facilities such as argon stirring stations, vacuum degassers and ladle furnaces relieved the demands for strict BOF end point control. Desulphurisation of hot metal became standard practice. In regions with scrap shortage hot metal desiliconisation followed by dephosphorisation, was introduced in the blast furnace cast house and hot metal transfer ladles. Later redundant converter vessels were used for pre-treatment, resulting in a two-stage process. The fundamentals of oxygen steelmaking are described and a vision on the future is presented.

Preliminary investigations of stone resources were conducted in the La Range, Johnson Lake-Pelican Narrows-Deschambault Lake and Creighton-Amisk Lake regions of Saskatchewan. The work identified a rich variety of accessible, attractive and technically promising stone resources. Ordovician dolomites in various combinations of red, buff, yellow, grey and purple are very dense and take a very good polish. These are classified as marbles in the industry and some rival the famous marbles of Verona, Italy. A wide variety of attractive granites have been identified. Among these is a jade green stone (charnockite) and ornamental banded granites (gneisses). A dark greenish to black stone (amphibolite) with white and red veining resembles the well-known Verde Antique variety of Vermont and Italy and surpasses it aesthetically and in engineering properties. Some of these stones have been displayed at Canadian and United States expositions where they received an enthusiastic response from the international stone industry. More detailed evaluation and test quarrying of promising deposits are required. Such work could be rewarding to the industry as some stone varieties in the province have the potential for gaining international markets.

"A hoisting plant design should satisfy two basic requirements:1. to provide the necessary materials handling capacity, including ventilation where applicable, while meeting the requirements of good practice and, as a minimum, government regulation; and2. to optimize the economics of the project. Selection of hoisting equipment to meet the first objective is a complex but logical engineering process. The necessary calculations of payloads, accelerations, speeds, rope strength, hoist size, and power requirements are very readily carried out on computers or programmable calculators. A variety of hoist options can be quickly examined to assess the effects of changes in design parameters.Meeting the second requirement involves balancing the costs of various hoist arrangements and shaft designs, together with the time cost effects of differing shaft sinking rates and potential advances to be gained by concurrent level development. The proposed mine layout is significant here, as is the possibility of future shaft deepening and/or production increase. The availability of used equipment may be significant, both as regards first cost and delivery time. The factors are interactive, with their relative effects .varying from project to project. This paper sets out the primary factors to be considered."

Kimber/ires are intrusive rocks whose main constituenr, olivine, has been altered entirely or almosr enrirely ro serpentine. Texture usually is porphyritic, superimposed upon a brecciared one. Diamonds are found only in kimberlites, and are present in economic quantities only in about I% of all kimberlites known. Two glacial drift diamonds, one near Peterborough and one near Timmins, both in Ontario, have been found in Canada and are believed to have been eroded and rransporred from their original source by glaciers. Many more glacial drift diamonds have been found sourh of rhe Great Lakes in the United States, parricularly in Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin . There are nine known kimberlire occurrences in Canada. Diamonds have been located in rwo of rhem: on lie Bizard near Monrreal and on Somerset Island in the Northwesr Terrirories. The lie Bizard occurrence comprises three kimberlire diarremes; samples of rhe largest one revealed JO riny diamonds totalling 0.0537 carars. The Somerset Island kimberlites are rhe mosr significant yet discovered in Canada. Ar leasr 19 separare kimberlite occurrences are known on rhe island. Testing by Diapros Canada Lim ired, however, revealed only "a few small diamonds". fr is likely rhar, wirh enough time and funds, additional kimberlires, possibly bearing economic quanriries of diamonds, will be found in Canada.

"Most deposits display a high degree of geological and mineralogical complexity that can affect metallurgical processing. Therefore, the proper characterization of the ore and gangue minerals requires a multi disciplinary approach combining geology, mineralogy, geochemistry and processing. However, mineralogy to a large extent informs the metallurgical process. Automated methods can be used throughout the mining chain from advanced exploration through to production.In this presentation we discuss actual case studies where automated mineralogy has been applied in a geometallurgical framework at a pre-feasibility to feasibility level. These include examples from a strongly serpentinized magmatic Ni deposit (Dumont) and a magmatic Cu-Ni deposit (Maturi). Mineral speciation and ratios, e.g., chalcopyrite, cubanite, and pentlandite/pyrrhotite are critical to model the Cu-Ni magmatic deposit. In the serpentinized Ni ore, automated mineralogy is used to speciate the Ni minerals into sulphides, alloys and refractory Ni in the silicate matrix.The mineralogical results are linked to the metallurgical test work in order to model the geometallurgical domains. These case studies will illustrate how mineral quantification and improved understanding of inherent mineralogical parameters in relation to metallurgy reduce technical risk in both exploration and flowsheet development.INTRODUCTIONGeometallurgy is a cross-discipline approach combining geology, metallurgy and mine planning (e.g., Dunham et al., 2011). It is aimed to improve the understanding of geological, mineralogical and metallurgical parameters of an ore. Informational gaps among the different disciplines are often apparent. Automated mineralogy is shown in many studies (e.g., Eppinger et al., 2013, Philander and Rozendaal, 2013) to constitute the link between geology and metallurgy. The geometallurgical approach can provide specific data to geology, mining and mineral processing development and plant operations. The scope of the automated mineralogy is to illustrate how mineral quantification can improve the understanding of inherent mineralogical parameters in relation to metallurgy, and reduce the technical risk in both exploration and flowsheet development."

"In February 1980, Dome Mines Limited announced a $50 million expansion program which would result in a 50% increase in mill capacity from the present 1,815 tonnes per day to an eventual production rate of 2, 720 tonnes per day in the year 1984. As an integral and necessary part of this planned expansion, a new vertical production shaft, No. 8 Shaft, would be sunk from surface to a depth of 1,645 metres.Throughout the seventy-year history of mining at the Dome, gold has been found in a number of different rock types and in association with a number of different structural settings. However, the key to successfully locating ore deposits lies in the recognition of the favourable environments in which they generally occur. First and foremost, the exercise of locating the No. 8 shaft became an exercise in geological deduction based on the projection of these favourable lithologic environments.In November 1980, after detailed engineering work was completed, the total cost of the project was estimated at $75.5 million 1980 dollars or $91 million dollars allowing for inflation over a four-year construction period. These estimates include the shaft, significant replacement and alterations to the milling process, and an upgrading of the plant."

Cyanide has been used for the recovery of gold since the mid 1800s, but several jurisdictions have already banned its use, and environmental pressures are increasing to finding an alternative. Gold also forms chloride complexes similar to those of cyanide, but the use of chloride has never achieved widespread acceptance. This paper describes a chloride-based flowsheet, wherein the key unit process is the recovery and recycle of chloride ion. It is shown that the chloride-based flowsheet is competitive economically with the conventional cyanide-based flowsheets, and that it has a number of other advantages, particularly environmentally.

Sulphate concentration in groundwater is a good measure of the extent of oxidation of sulphides, provided that sulphide minerals are the primary source of the sulphate. A study was conducted near the Eustis Mine in Quebec to determine where and how the sulphate in groundwaters originated. Atmospheric precipitation is the only source of sulphate other than oxidation of sulphides, and in this study area it is equal to 0.01,. millimole per litre. The oxidation of sulphides can be divided into subsurface oxidation (mainly inorganic processes) and surface oxidation (including both organic and inorganic processes) . The maximum sulphate concentration due to subsurface oxidation of sulphides depends on the solubility of 0 2 in water and is 0.25 millimole per litre. Surface oxidation is, therefore, responsible for any amount greater than atmospheric plus subsurface contributions (0.29 millimole per litre). Surface inorganic oxidation occurs in waters with a pH greater than 15 and is controlled by the kinetics of the oxidation processes. Organic (bacterial) surface oxidation is dominant only in acid (pH< 1.5) waters. The bacterial action accelerates the oxidation of sulphides, and large quanttties of sulphate may be introduced into solution.

A newly developed damage model was used in the study of rock fragmentation mechanisms involved in crater blasting. Simulations show that at the detonation of the explosive charge, a crushed zone around the explosive charge is formed due to compressive failure and then a strong pressure wave is sent out forming a pressurized ring that propagates at the dilatation wave velocity. As the pressurized ring leaves the crushed zone, two tensile stress components perpendicular to the radial stress are developed in response to the action of the radial pressure, causing tensile failure and forming a damage zone around the charge. The formation of this damage zone is quite independent of the depth of the explosive charge provided there is no interference by the reflection from the free face. When the pressurized ring reaches the free face, it is reflected there and causes rock failure on the ground surface that forms another damage zone. Under the simulation conditions, it is revealed that the depth of charge is a factor controlling the relationship between the two damage zones. At a depth smaller than the optimum, the two damage zones coalesce into one and there is excessive rock breakage; otherwise, the two damage zones tend to isolate from each other with the increase in the depth of charge. Calculations of fragmentation indicate that the average fragment size increases and the uniformity of fragments decreases when the depth of charge increases as observed in practical blasting.

"Totten Mine return air raise was designed with two parallel fans equipped with silencers to reduce the noise emitted from the outlets into the environment. As development and production of the mine progressed through the past years, the silencer system needed to be upgraded, and additional maintenance strategies have been necessary to meet the regulatory noise limits enforced by the province of Ontario. The current mine plan will require the fans to reach the upper limit of their capacity by Q1 2019. To achieve this operational target, additional silencing capability has been required and Totten Mine has explored alternatives to further extend the noise silencing capacity available considering the current constraints at the mine site. The alternatives included a new silencer baffle design and a new layout that have allowed doubling the length of the silencer system. Using acoustic measurement data collected on several occasions, this paper presents and discusses the performance of the various silencing systems which have been installed on the return air fans at Totten Mine.INTRODUCTION Vale Canada Limited’s Totten Mine is a base metal, underground mine extracting nickel and copper, situated in the Sudbury Basin of Ontario. The mine initiated operations at the end of 2013, and is equipped with two main return air fans and two main fresh air fans located on surface. Both fresh air and return air fans are set in a parallel arrangement to operate as integrated units and are equipped with variable frequency drives (VFDs) to allow for the remote modification of their operating set point, usually between 600 to 880 rpm, depending on the mine’s requirements. The main return air raise (RAR) fans are also equipped with dissipative baffle silencers to attenuate the noise emitted to the environment. Approximately four years ago, acoustical measurements conducted to verify compliance with the applicable regulatory criteria, and respond to noise concerns from neighboring residents, concluded that the sound emissions of the main return air raise exceeded the noise design parameters. The acoustic tones of the fans were audible offsite, at a residential location, approximately 9 km northeast of the mine site. The elevated sound levels and offsite audibility was due to degradation of the original discharge silencers from moisture and particulate being drawn from underground workings and passing through the silencer baffles. The audibility was also due to an outlet directivity pattern which directed noise towards the residential location."

"Many mentorship programs are available to Canadian mining industry employees. Some are company-led initiatives, whereas others are provided through educational institutions or nonprofit organizations. In 2016, a national survey was launched to gain insight into perceptions of what mentorship is, learn about available programs, and collate experiences with formal and informal mentorship opportunities. This paper outlines survey findings and delivers recommendations to industry for consideration in employee mentorship programs. In addition, mining industry leaders share their mentor/mentee perspectives. The intent of this paper is to bring awareness of best practices that can help employees grow and develop in their profession.RÉSUMÉ Les employés de l’industrie minière canadienne ont accès à de nombreux programmes d’encadrement. Certains sont des initiatives menées par les sociétés, d’autres sont proposées par le biais d’établissements d’enseignement ou d’organismes à but non lucratif. En 2016, une enquête à l’échelle nationale a été lancée en vue d’obtenir des informations quant à la perception de ce qu’est réellement l’encadrement, de découvrir les programmes proposés et de comparer les expériences aux possibilités d’encadrement, officielles ou non. Cet article présente les résultats de cette enquête et fournit des recommandations à l’intention de l’industrie afin qu’elle les prenne en compte dans ses programmes d’encadrement des employés. En outre, des chefs de file de l’industrie minière partagent leurs points de vue conseillers/protégés. L’intention de cet article est de sensibiliser les employés aux meilleures pratiques, ce qui les aidera à évoluer et à se développer dans leur profession. INTRODUCTIONThis paper about mentorship in the mining industry is based on voluntary responses to a cold survey, written and circulated by the authors. In 2016, a link to an online mentorship survey was circulated to males and females in the mining industry with the belief that mentorship programs should be available to everyone. The link was delivered via the authors’ personal networks in mining, the CIM Reporter, Women in Mining (WIM) email blasts, LinkedIn, and Facebook. This paper summarizes the answers to the survey questions. The paper is a follow up to one by the same authors (Nyabeze, Espley, & Beneteau, 2010), which was written to gain insight into why women join and stay in the mining industry, and to learn why the overall representation of women is low."
