THE determination of suitable and safe annealing temperatures is one of the most important problems arising in the operation of a copper rolling mill. Certain of the larger mills have worked this problem out for themselves and in these mills the operation has become more or less standardized. In some of the mills pyrometers are used to measure the temperature of the annealing furnaces and careful watch is kept to see that overheating does not take place. In a considerable number of the mills, however, dependence is placed entirely on the judgment of the operator. The almost total lack of literature bearing on this subject seems sufficient warrant for the publication of this paper. The discussion of this subject naturally divides itself into two parts: (1) The effect of annealing temperature on physical properties; and (2) changes in the microstructure of refined copper due to cold rolling and annealing. I. THE EFFECT OF ANNEALING TEMPERATURE ON PHYSICAL PROPERTIES For the purpose of investigating this phase of the subject six test bars were selected, varying in oxygen content between the limits of 0.036 and 0.070 per cent. INTRODUCTION Primary grinding mills as defined in this paper, are autogenous or semi-autogenous rotating, tumbling mills having a coarse feed with a top size usually varying from 150 to 300 mm (6 to 12 inches). Most frequently, the feed to these mills is the product of primary crushing plants but in some cases run of mine ore is used as feed such as at Benguet, McDermitt, L-Bar Sohio, Bear Creek and others. The size of the largest lumps in the mill feed is principally determined by limits set by the mill feed trunnion diameter and by the type and size of conveying equipment used for handling and of bins and stockpiles used for storage. The use of primary mills in mineral processing plants has expanded very significantly in the last twenty years, and they have been successfully applied to the treatment of a wide variety of ores in both wet and dry grinding applications. In the present state of technological development for primary grinding mills, there is a wide choice of acceptable options with respect to type and size, grinding flowsheet and grinding media. The choice of the optimum combination which would result in the most satisfactory condition of operation, from the standpoint of both metallurgical results and costs, depends on the nature of the ore, the required characteristics of the grinding products and on various geographic and economic circumstances. The effects of such factors and considerations on the choice and sizing of primary grinding mills and flowsheets are reviewed and discussed in the following pages. PRIMARY MILLS SELECTION Inherent Characteristics of Primary Grinding Primary grinding is complex because it involves several comminution mechanisms which occur simultaneously and to some degree interfere with one another. These mechanisms of impact, attrition and abrasion have been described earlier. The relative importance of these three main grinding actions and their mutual balance resulting in a continuous uniform operation of the mill depend to a very large extent on the nature of the ore and its physical properties. The paper reviews the efforts made to utilize powder metallurgy to solve problems encountered when using alloys at high temperatures. The following subjects are discussed: comparison of wrought and sintered super alloys, sintered aluminum powder, porous materials for transpiration cooling, molybdenum, and cermets. TODAY, powder-metallurgy techniques are be-JL coming increasingly important, producing materials which at the present time cannot be made by any other method. Among these materials are high melting-point metals such as tantalum and tungsten, porous metals for filters and lubricant-containing bearings, electrical contacts and electrodes (i.e., tungsten-copper), cutting tools of the cemented carbides, and magnet alloys. In addition, the powder-metallurgy industry has grown because, through the application of its methods, shaped parts, such as gears, can be produced at tremendous rates with a low scrap loss in comparison with manufacture by casting or forging and machining. In the past few years, by utilizing powder metallurgy, several approaches to the problem of high temperature materials have been investigated. In this paper the authors will review some of the studies on application of materials having properties above 1350°F. Since their experience lies in the aeronautical field, possible uses of powder-metallurgy techniques in the production of aircraft en- gines will be emphasized. A large portion of the work is classified, but such a restriction has not eliminated any field from discussion, although limiting the amount of detail it is possible to present. The development of high temperature alloys from powders and porous metals for cooling will be discussed as well as research done on molybdenum and molybdenum alloys, cermets, and intermetallics. Some studies on the utilization of cermets will be considered along with special problems that have been revealed through these investigations. Special interest in certain factors of sintered aluminum powder (SAP) makes it desirable to discuss this material although its use temperature is below the 1350°F limitation set for this paper. High Temperature Alloys from Powders In general, components made from powders for room-temperature application have been investigated with the primary purpose of taking advantage of the high production rates and economies made possible by powder metallurgy. From the standpoint of properties, the ojective of the powder metallurgist has been to obtain a product comparable to the cast or wrought product that is to be replaced. Comparisons of the properties of alloys made by powder-metallurgy methods with those of similar compositions made by casting and forging are reported in the literature.12 In many cases equivalent

Economic deposits of barite occur in Missouri in two main districts. The most important, the Southeastern or Washington County district, is in the southeastern part of the state, mostly in Washington County with a small extension into the northeastern part of St. Francois County. Roughly, it embraces nine townships or about 200,000 acres and accounts for from 80 to 90 per cent. of the state production. The Central district, is in the central part of the state, includes most of Morgan and Miller counties, and parts of Camden; Benton, Moniteau and Cole counties. The area embraced is much larger than the Washington County district, but the deposits are more infrequent. The location and general area covered by the two districts is shown in Fig. 1. There is another small area in southern Franklin County but so far its production has been of small consequence. It might be considered as a northward extension of the Washington County field. An, area in the central part of Hickory County has also produced a small amount. The outline of the districts as shown indicates the general area in which deposits have been found. The total area covered by deposits of barite is only a small part of this, as, in the Central district especially, there may be miles of supposedly barren areas between ore-bearing areas of an acre or two in extent. The date when barite was first mined in Missouri cannot be definit stated, but the industry probably dates back to about 1860. The occurrence of barite was known long before this, as it was encountered in the lead mines in Washington County and mentioned by several earlier writers." Missouri is reported as producing 8000 tons in 1882 so it is evident the industry was well under way in the seventies in order to have arrived at this substantial production. By 1893 Missouri production had increased so that it ranked with that of Virginia, then the largest producer it increased until in 1914 Missouri accounted for about 65 per cent. of the total United States output.

INTRODUCTION SEVERAL years ago the writer was connected with the Mint and Assay Service of the Federal Government as Assistant Assayer at the-Salt Lake Assay Office. At that time cyanide bars formed approximately half of the bullion purchased by that office. Disagreement in valuation between the producer and the office was not infrequent and to a lesser extent between the Assay Office and the Mint, this latter issue being soon obviated, however, by adopting uniform methods of sampling the bars. A nice problem seemed to offer itself for research and the writer began a series of experiments which were soon terminated, however, by his going into other work, and which he regrets have not since been completed. The results attained may suggest lines of approach to this problem and are, therefore, offered in this article. Frederick P. Dewey, Assayer of the Mint Service, U. S. Treasury, has had abundant opportunity to study this phase of metallurgy, and has published several articles relative thereto.1 In the last article cited Dewey quotes analyses of cyanide bullion similar in content to that with which the writer worked, and which show some of the variations met with. In the discussion of these papers,2 comparison has been made in terms of copper bullion, but to the writer this seems of questionable value. Copper bullion may resemble silver bullion, but its similarity to, gold bullion with little or no silver content is another thing. The freezing-point diagram of Roozeboom, reproduced on page 881 of the discussion cited, is for the gold-silver series as stated. No true conception of the Park City mining district can be obtained without first giving consideration to the part it has played as a consistent producer of mineral wealth. Its position in this regard is almost unique in the annals of a lead silver camp. For over fifty years it has been a continuous producer of lead and silver and for twenty years it has added to the world's supply of zinc. Few camps with its productive history are so little known to the mining fraternity for the reason that its life has never been punctuated by periods of "boom" which serve to attract general attention, neither has it been the field of operation for promoters who temporarily focus attention upon their scene of action. Its history is one of legitimate mining operations. These were at first carried on by a number of smaller companies. A period of consolidation followed and at the present time the entire production of the camp is in the hands of two major companies and one smaller company. These are flanked by a number of prospecting properties, which are at this time actively engaged in the search for ores and later events will doubtless put some of them in the producing class.

Although present electrolytic zinc manufacturing processes are aimed at the direct wet process recovery of the metal, and, with this end in view, several industrial scale patents have been applied for during the last few years, the object of this paper is to enhance the possible metallurgical interest in the conventional recovery of zinc and other metals from leaching residues. Therefore, its main end is the description and discussion of the recovery process of zinc, lead and cadmium from leaching residues. Fundamentally, the process consists of the following: Flotation processing to recover the non-roasted blende still contained in the residues. Pyrometallurgical processing of flotation tails in low-shaft furnaces (kilns) and open-flame rotating furnaces and the ensuing recovery of zinc, lead and cadmium as a mixture of their oxides through volatilization.

Studies such as the investigations into the solubility of gases in crude oil under various conditions, which have been carried on during the past three or four years, are very interesting from an academic point of view, but this consideration alone is hardly sufficient to warrant the large contributions from the industry necessary to maintain them. Some definite benefit to the industry as a whole should be forthcoming. The purpose of this paper is to direct the attention of company engineers, and company executives, to some of the ways in which the information gained from these studies can be made directly profitable. This work has two principal economic aspects. One affects the investment budget, and through it the financial requirements of the companies. The other affects operations, and through this course is reflected in current earnings. It will be shown that, as a direct result of the investigations into gas solubility, undertaken in the recent past by various investigators, it is now possible: 1. To determine more accurately the amount of reservoir oil originally present. 2. To obtain closer control on operating conditions, to effect more economical recovery. 3. To predict earlier and more dependably when and how much surface lifting equipment will be needed. 4. To reduce, or entirely avoid the very large investment in gasoline recovery equipment now frequently found necessary. 5. To control the gravity of the pipe-line oil so as to secure the greatest possible revenue from the products of the well. 6. To effect the recovery of a large amount of gasoline now wasted while the practicability of a gasoline recovery system is being decided. 7. To plan operations, by comparison with the history of old properties operated without this new information, so as to avoid the mistakes of ignorance made in the past. These points will be discussed in the following pages, though not necessarily in the order stated. IMPORTANCE OF ROCK DRILLING. IT has been estimated that the value of the mineral products of the United States is about $2,000,000,000 a year; that about $25,000,000 is expended. annually for explosives and that about double this sum is paid in wages where blasting is done. The value of the mineral products does not adequately express the importance of the industry involved in the excavation of rock and ore because of the enormous sums of money expended in tunnel driving, in quarries, and in open-cut excavation generally. We know that the Catskill Aqueduct in the neighborhood of New York, which is now nearing completion, has cost some $165,000,000 and that about one-third of this may be rated as rock excavation. These illustrations are given in order to call attention to the great importance of an industry the extension and development of which in our industrial life depend so much upon the economics of rock drilling. Reference has been made to the new Catskill Aqueduct. There are three aqueducts leading into New York, each built at periods separated by some 20 years of time. 'The first one, known as the Old Aqueduct, conveys the waters of the Croton river to New York City in a manner which reminds one of the old Roman aqueducts, the ruins of which are still in evidence. The engineers who laid out these old conduits sought to direct their lines around the hills and into the valleys, at all times avoiding the rock. When it was necessary to cross a river or a deep ravine, a bridge or causeway was constructed. High Bridge, over the Harlem river, is an arched masonry viaduct differing in no essential features from the aqueducts of the Romans. When the second Croton Aqueduct was built, about the year 1890, the art of drilling rock had been so far perfected, and the use of explosives, through the invention of dynamite, had become ,so general, that this waterway was planned and executed on straight lines, following rather than avoiding the rock. The second Croton Aqueduct is a tunnel through rock, about 32 miles in length; material gneiss, almost as hard as granite. Its construction was made practicable by sinking

A newly developed ac technique was used to measure the electrical-resistivity changes associated with both cyclic stressing and subsequent annealing of high-purity and OFHC copper. The early stage of push-pull fatigue was explored at 293° and 4.2°K, with stresses chosen for an expected fatigue life of 2 to 8 X 105 cycles. For high-purity copper, fatigue at 293°K was accompanied by an initial increase in resistivity. After about 5000 stress cycles, no further increase was observed. Annealing studies showed that the resisticity increment could be accounted for solely in terms of an increased dislocation density, to about 2 x 1010 disl pev sq cm. Fov 42°K fatigue, however, the resistivity increased continually, with no evidence of saturation, as approximately (No. of stress cycles)1/4. This is intevpreted to result from both dislocation multiplication and vacancy production; estimated vacancy concentrations are 10-4 to 10-9. The continuous resistivity increase was inhibited by interspersed annealing treatments at 293°K, which also raised the level of the stress-strain curve. These effects are attributed to annealing of vacancies into dislocation loops. In contrast, OFHC copper fatigued at 4.2°K showed saturation of electrical vesistivity after only a few hundred cycles, and it appeared that vacancies annealed out completely between 77° and 293°K. MaNY observations suggest that both dislocation multiplication and point-defect production are important aspects of fatigue deformation. An increase in dislocation density with number of stress cycles has been demonstrated or implied by several experimental techniques, including optical metallography with lithium fluoride,' electron microscopy with copper,2 thermal conductivity of Cu-Zn alloys,3 and peak-stress measurements during cycling at constant plastic strain amplitude.4,5 At low amplitudes and/or stresses saturation of fatigue hardening and dislocation density occurs early in the expected fatigue life,4-6 frequently by a few hundred cycles. The evidence for point-defect production is somewhat less extensive, but it is nonetheless persuasive. Rosenberg7 reported briefly that, for equal stresses, copper fatigued at liquid-hydrogen temperature displays an increase in electrical resistance some ten times that which accompanies unidirectional stressing. Further, the extra resistance saturates after a few hundred stress cycles, and does not anneal significantly until a temperature of about 170°K is attained.' Point-defect production during fatigue is also suggested by 1) the softening during cyclic stressing of initially strain-hardened polycrystal-line copper9, 2) the strong temperature dependence of the yield strength of fatigue-hardened mono- and polycrystalline copper,579"0 and 3) the influence of intermediate annealing upon slip-band formation in copper fatigued at 90°K.8 It is evident that characterization of the fatigued state requires a knowledge of both point-defect and dislocation densities. For this purpose electrical-resistivity measurements are useful, but they are difficult to perform because of geometric limitations. Push-pull fatigue is necessary to obtain a macroscopic ally uniform deformation over the specimen cross section; however, the specimen must then have a low slenderness ratio to avoid plastic buckling, while the standard dc resistivity technique requires a very slender specimen for

THE discovery that strongly magnetic bodies localized near the surface of the earth could be detected by the distortion which they produced in the resultant magnetic field marked the beginning of magnetic surveying methods. From an original ability to detect bodies of magnetic iron ore and the like when located very close to the, surface, these methods have been extended until today they promise to give much information with regard to the structure of such slightly magnetic material as sedimentary rock containing only a very small proportion of iron.1 The recent extensions have been made possible through the development of more delicate instruments, and of methods for their use. From the original compass and dip needle, the design of apparatus has progressed until equipment Is typified by magnetic balances capable of measuring the components of the earth's field to an extremely high degree of accuracy. It seems unlikely that the limit of such instrumental development has been reached. Just as the change from compass and dip needle has enabled the location of relatively minor changes in magnetic materials, so additional developments in the direction of increased sensitivity, as well as in greater dependability and constancy of operation, should reveal positively many slight changes which either escape notice in the present surveys or are so small that they cannot with certainty be separated from uncontrollable errors due to inconstant operation of the equipment. The ability to read smaller and smaller variations does not mean, of course, that deductions as to the causes of these variations will be made as accurately and definitely as -is possible with the more pronounced anomalies.

The phenomenon of retrograde solubility in metals, i.e., maximum solubility in a solid terminal phase in equilibrium with a liquid phase, has been theoretically predicted by Van aar' in his calculations of hypothetical binary phase diagrams. It was not until 1926, however, that retrograde solubility was experimentally verified in the Zn-Cd system.' Since then many sys- tems with retrograde solubility have been found, so that at present approximately fifty binary diagrams with a retrograde solidus curve are known.3 Meijering4 has critically appraised the accumulated data and has presented calculations which alloy predictions as to whether or not a solidus line will be retrograde. Interest in retrograde solubility increased when it was found that the solidus curves of germanium and silicon alloyed with a great many doping elements are retrrade. The problem was treated thermody-namically by odkinson,% d all available data on solid solutions in germanium and silicon were summarized by Trumbore.7 Although it is to be expected that intermetallic compounds will also exhibit retrograde solubility, experimental evidence is much more limited. Until now retrograde solidus curves have been reported for the compounds de,' be, Ps:" ne," SnSe," and SnS.13 All these compounds are semiconductors, and the solidus curves were usually obtained by determining the carrier concentration at room temperature of samples equilibrated at elevated temperatures and then quenched. It has been hown,'' however, that it is not always possible to quench in the equilibrium compositions from above a certain temperature. Theoretical discussions have either explicitly excluded intermetallic compounds4 or not treated them with respect to retrograde slubilit.j In the following a thermodynamic treatment of retrograde solu-

Grain boundary attack in 16 pct HCl was found to be substantially the same at low penetrations in zone-refined aluminum (individual impurities 0.1 at. ppm), superior electrolytically refined aluminum (51 at. ppm), and aluminum with various impurities at much higher levels. It was concluded that impurity atom segregation affecting corrosion would have been detected and that the corrosion susceptibility did not originate in this segregation but in the structure of the boundary. It was pointed out that the significance of most previous studies in this system had been obscured by an unrecognized autocatalytic copper reaction. Although general corrosion rate was also impurity-insensitive , there was shallow pitting attributed to iron seg-regation and a hillocked surface texture associated with copper; these were interpreted as due to cathodic damage affecting- cathode distribution. THE grain boundary corrosion suffered by high-purity aluminum in hydrochloric acid has been the object of some interest (the earlier work is summarized in Ref. 1). The central metallurgical question here is whether the corrosion susceptibility of a boundary originates in its structure or in impurity atom segregation. An attempt to study this question revealed large catalytic effects associated with small quantities of the copper impurity in the aluminum, 220 ppm, or in the corrodent, and these magnified the preferential boundary attack and obscured the intrinsic susceptibility question.' After the catalytic effects had been examined,"' test conditions could be designed to avoid them and methods developed for studying the shallow boundary penetrations prevailing when they were absent.= It then became possible to determine whether intrinsic boundary corrosion in aluminum involves impurity segregation. The older work provided no firm information on grain boundary segregation of specific solutes influencing corrosion although several studies suggested iron segregates.4,5 perryman4 found in 10 pct HC1 that the slowly developing (microns per month) grain boundary grooves were deeper in material of higher iron content (range 10 to 550 ppm, with 5 to 80 pprn Cu) but he did not measure the depths of general corrosion, which were probably several times greater, and his reference surfaces may have varied more than did the groove depths. Metzger and Intrater's results for 20 pct HC~,' which yielded higher time-average rates (mm per month) and deeper penetrations, suggested that boundary segregation of iron (range 4 to 230 ppm, with 22 pprn Cu) decreased the penetration rate. IMD effect of the copper impurity is greater1,2 and it is now evident that their corrosion rates had been much magnified by this effect and did not provide a proper basis for the analysis of segregation. In exploratory studies of other solutes (made under the same conditions), 1000 ppm additions of Mg, Mn, or Si or 100 ppm Ca were without effect.1 Montariol6 noted that boundary attack in 22 pct HC1 persisted after zone refining although with fewer deep fissures (ranges 0.06 to 4 ppm Cu, 4 to 23 ppm Fe). Autocatalytic effects may have influenced these results also and those of Perryman.4 The present objective was, as a first step, to see whether quantitative tests designed to exclude autocatalytic influences would indicate the existence of low-level impurity effects on intrinsic boundary corrosion. Comparison of electrolytically refined with zone-refined aluminum of lower copper and iron contents revealed no differences in boundary corrosion, but certain impurity-sensitive differences in general corrosion morphology were noted and investigated further at higher impurity levels. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A) Material. A selection from commercially available material was made with the cooperation of several producers. An electrolytically refined lot (III-A, 1 ppm Cu, 2.4 ppm Fe) studied previously3 provided a starting point. Since material of substantially higher copper content could not be used if the autocatalytic corrosion reaction were to be avoided,2,3 a lot (III-B) of about the same purity was added as a check, two zone-refined lots (I-A and I-B) with copper and iron an order of magnitude lower were selected for comparison, and an intermediate lot (11) was included. Analytical data are given in Table I. For copper in I-B and iron in I-A and I-B, the actual concentration is thought to be near the limit given, i.e., about 0.1 ppm. For titanium, vanadium, and chromium in III-B, the actual amounts are thought to be, like those in III-A, substantially lower than in the zone-refined lots (these elements concentrate in the solid on freezing). Data are given later for some additional lots surveved. B) Specimen Preparation and Procedure. one by 3 cm blanks with a notched stem were cut from 1-mm cold-rolled sheet, annealed 24 hr in air at 650°C, and quenched in an air stream (42°C per sec initial cooling rate, 100 sec to cool to 100°C). The high annealing temperature maximized diffusivities and approach to equilibrium impurity distributions. A water quench, in principle more efficient in preserving the distribution established, was undesirable because the boundaries were almost plane and they tended to shear and migrate during the quench and thus to be separated from any existing impurity atmosphere. This paper describes the procedures and results of a series of experiments conducted to determine the depressing effect of sodium, calcium and magnesium ions on the amine flotation of quartz. It also presents an analysis of the experimental results by the electrical double layer theory. The flotation of quartz with primary amines has been practiced on a large scale in the phosphate industry for many years. Some glass sand —and recently iron ore — has also been treated by this flotation technique. These applications have been highly successful and demonstrate that a complete mastery of all the details of an operation is not needed to achieve an economic success. There are times, though, when it becomes important to recognize, both qualitatively and quantitatively, the effects of some previously ignored variables. The effects of cations on the amine flotation process, particularly those ions that contribute to water hardness and abound in sea water, are a case in point. In conjunction with the development of a cationic flotation reagent for separating quartz from apatite, it became necessary to quantify the influence of calcium and magnesium on the separation. In order to strengthen and broaden current understanding of the flotation process, the results were interpreted by means of the electrical double layer theory. THEORETICAL BACKGROUND Assume that, given the same equipment, procedure, and time, the recovery of quartz by amine flotation is a function of only the adsorption density of aminium ions in the Stern layer, i.e., that for any given adsorption density there exists only one recovery percentage. As bearing upon it, the operations of the Combination Mining and Milling Company of Black Pine, Deer Lodge county, Montana, during the past year may not be without interest. Although data on the exact tonnage of recoverable coal silt are not known, the quantity produced in 1943 was estimated to be over five million tons for the anthracite region of Pennsylvania alone. Since that time the recovery of the No. 5 buckwheat size previously included in silt estimates has increased greatly thus reducing the total silt tonnage. As a compensating factor, however, the methods of recovering silt previously escaping into the rivers and streams have been markedly improved so that the net figure may not have changed materially. Comparable estimates for bituminous coal are lacking, but undoubtedly the silt represents a significant tonnage. With the trend toward increased wet cleaning of the smaller sizes of bituminous coal, it is to be expected that even greater quantities of silt will be available in the future. The raw silt from anthracite collieries usually contains a high mineral matter content, but technological developments in fine coal cleaning have been making rapid advances and it appears probable that more extensive use of these methods will be employed in the near future. Bituminous coal silt in many instances contains a similar high mineral matter content. As with anthracite silt, however, the cleaning of this material, where necessary, appears both technologically and economically feasible. With a view to upgrading the size and value of silt, considerable laboratory and pilot plant work has been conducted by a number of organizations on what is commonly known as pelletization. Actually the process is one of extrusion in which the moist silt is extruded from a die in the form of rods, which usually break into relatively short lengths—a few inches long—as they fall from the die. Fig I is a photograph of some extruded 3/8-in. diam pellets and of the anthracite silt from which they were produced This technique of producing larger sized material from fines is by no means new, having been used extensively by the industrial carbon and clay industries for years.' The application of the process to coal silt appears, however, to be relatively new. The first major program of investigation dates back only to July 1945, when a group of engineers representing the Anthracite Institute, The Pennsylvania State College and the J. F. Pritchard and Co. conducted preliminary tests on the extrusion of anthracite silt at the Floridin Co. plant at Warren, Pa. Since that time these three organiza-tions—individually, together, and in cooperation with other interested groups— have actively pursued work on various phases of the problem. Much of the early history and details of the laboratory and pilot plant work by the Anthracite Institute, has been reported by Mulcey and Eckerd.2 It is the purpose of this paper to report additional information on the process, especially with respect to the factors influencing the quality and use properties of the product, and the current develop-

Most igneous rocks, and particularly those of the basic type, contain relatively high percentages of magnetite and other iron oxides, which give them moderately high magnetic susceptibilities and make them responsible for an important percentage of the magnetic anomalies observed during the course of geophysical surveys by the magnetic method. The irregular form and high susceptibility of the igneous rocks make them readily polarizable and the position and strength of the magnetic poles formed are not always explicable by theoretical calculations of anomalies due to certain assumed forms in the normal magnetic field of the area under study. During the last four years our field work has permitted us to make detailed observations of anomalies due to igneous rocks in all the states of south Brazil. The form and position of the igneous rock at some places were fairly accurately known, which made it possible to calculate theoretical anomalies and compare them with the observed data. Some of the data we obtained have been published and additional cases are now awaiting publication. In this paper, we will present a few specific cases where the geology is moderately well known and which we believe to be of considerable value as representing typical magnetic anomalies in the south magnetic hemisphere, where the inclination of the magnetic field is very low. Although the vertical intensity is negative in the Southern Hemisphere, we have adopted the convention of plotting increase in intensity (negative) as a positive anomaly; i.e., above the x axis. This convention facilitates comparison with anomalies in the north.

ANOTHER chapter in the history of Mother Lode mining is being written by operations in the Old Eureka mine near Sutter Creek, Amador County, California. During a two-year period (1938-1939), 85,517 tons of ore averaging 0.62 oz. gold per ton were mined and milled, as compared to the production of approximately 210,000 tons of 0.315-oz. gold ore during the preceding seven years. This is a repetition of mining history in the Mother Lode, where a period of prosperity has followed a long period of lean production. The location of this new ore in the hitherto unproductive hanging-wall greenstones and its mining and geological developments are most interesting. HISTORY OF THE OLD EUREKA MINE The Old Eureka mine, also known as the Hayward, Eureka, Hetty Green and Amador Consolidated, is in the most productive 10-mile length of the 120-mile long Mother Lode of California. The mine was first opened in 1852 with operations more or less continuous for the next 30 years. Production during this period amounted to $12,000,000 from an ore shoot 500 ft. long, which bottomed 1700 ft. below the surface. The shaft was continued as a prospect to 2065 ft. on the incline, where work was stopped in 1881. The mine was sold in 1916 by Hetty Green and the shaft deepened to the 3500-ft. level (3212 ft. vertically) by the new owners. Drifts were run on the 1700, 2100, 3000 and 3500-ft. levels, together with approximately 1500 ft. of crosscuts. No ore was found and work was abandoned in 1921. The present owners, the Central Eureka Mining Co., purchased the mine in 1924 after threatened litigation over rights to the rich ore shoot being mined from the lower levels of the Central Eureka mine on the south. Rehabilitation of the shaft commenced in 1926 and in 1930 mining on the old 2100-ft. level was started. While efforts of the previous owners had been directed for the most part toward the area south of the Old Eureka shaft and adjacent to the productive Central Eureka mine, the present owners started drifting northward on the old 2100-ft. level.
