Machine manufacturers’ recommendations on maintenance strategies of capital-intensive draglines are not always based on real data and therefore lead to losses from downtime. This paper proposes a preventive maintenance strategy for a dragline deployed in an opencast coal mine based on reliability-centered maintenance and failure-mode-effects analysis using real operational data. Reliability-centered maintenance replaced a cluster of critical failure components of the dragline while satisfying two specific conditions: (i) the components should be replaced at the earliest mean time to failure (MTTF) within the group and (ii) the time taken to replace all the parts should be equivalent to the maximum downtime within the group. Estimated threshold weightage factor identified twenty-six critical failure components for the preventive maintenance strategy, and clustering of components divided them into nine groups. In a group, the loss that is expected to occur by replacing some of the components before their failure, and the gain by reducing the overall maintenance downtime, has been explained through a cost-benefit analysis. The total net profit generated is calculated as US$200,178. This clustering activity also led to a reduction of annual downtime by 231 h, whose approximate market price as equivalent coal production costs $295,365.

METHODS of coal preparation have been greatly developed and improved during the past few years. Under the pressing competition from substitutes that have been displacing coal as a source of heat or power, the coal industry has been able, in many cases, not only to hold its own but to regain much of the lost ground, by offering better products of a higher value. The purpose of this paper is to present, in a brief and simple form, the principles of the latest methods and machinery used in coal preparation, in order to enable the coal operator t0 select methods and equipment capable of solving his own problems in the most efficient and economical way. The paper will deal, in the main, .with coal cleaning. It must be emphasized, however, that a complete coal preparation study covers many other operations, such as handling, screening, de-dusting, dust-proofing, and ash-conditioning. Handling Coal From the producing face to the railway car, coal must be handled with great care, t0 prevent degradation, because the coarser sizes are not only easier to clean than fines but, for our markets, they are often the more valuable. Generally speaking, such care is less important or is unnecessary in the Old Country, where conditions are different. The best way to minimize breakage is to avoid gravity methods in coal transportation. All chutes in a preparation plant should be shaken mechanically, and cleaning processes requiring large surge bins must be avoided. De-Dusting De-dusting of coal is accomplished by the use of vibrating screens, fans, or classifiers, or by a combination of these. Fines below 1/32-in. (or coarser than this, with some coals) can very seldom be cleaned efficiently. Common practice is to discard them immediately, if the moisture content of the coal allows this to be done. Otherwise, they are liable to give unnecessary trouble, either in the form of dust or sludge, which are difficult to collect or to settle. Flotation is the only process which will effectively clean fines.

An evaluation is presented for a process designed , on the basis of published work , to extract alumina as potassium alum from clay using sulfuric acid and potassium sulfate . The silica residue is separated by filtration . Ferric iron is reduced to ferrous iron , and the alum is crystallized from the solution , leaving the ferrous iron in solution . The alum crystals are separated from the solution and redissolved for feed to autoclave decomposition . In an autoclave the alum is partly decomposed to a basic alum , recovering five - ninths of the sulfuric acid and two - thirds of the potassium sulfate without using an acid plant . The basic alum is decomposed by calcining , and the potassium sulfate is then removed by washing with water . Operating costs for a plant producing 1,000 tons of alumina a day are estimated at $ 96.15 per ton of alumina . The fixed capital cost is estimated at $ 155 million . This process is not competitive under current economic conditions with the production of alumina from bauxite by the Bayer process . Improvement in leaching , basic alum decomposition , and washing could reduce the costs and improve the product which contains some potassium .

Beryllium deposits in the northern Virgin Mountains , Clark County , Nev . , and Mohave County , Ariz . , about 70 miles northeast of Las Vegas , were investigated by the Bureau of Mines . The investigation indicated a widespread occurrence of beryllium- bearing pegmatites within an extensive belt of mica - schist . Several deposits with significant beryllium mineral concentrations were encountered . Only a few of the samples analyzed contained more than 1 percent beryllium oxide ( BeO ) ; in many of the samples , no beryllium was reported . The average tenor of samples from the more important occurrences was 0.25 percent BeO . Chrysoberyl is the predominant beryllium mineral in the pegmatite sills ; beryl predominates in the more massive bodies . Minute quantities of cesium and lithium minerals also occur , but no columbium , tantalum , or other rare minerals were found . Ore dressing tests on a composite sample containing 0.28 percent BeO which was representative of the pegmatite sills , indicated an 85 percent recovery of the chrysoberyl ( 70 percent recovery of total BeO ) by gravity concentration in a concentrate containing 17.6 percent BeO .

The Aluminum Co. of America raised its 99.5 percent unalloyed aluminum ingot selling price in March by 34 to 514 per pound. Other producers, including Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corp. , Anaconda Aluminum Co. , and Reynolds Metals Co., followed Alcoa's lead, raising their quotes to 51$. In late March, domestic merchants quoted ingot at levels ranging between 49.56 and 50.50 per pound. BISMUTH: Several domes tic dealers lowered their bismuth prices in recent weeks by 50t-606 to within a range of $5.60-$5.75 per pound; producers continue to hold published prices at $7.50.

Data released by the Commerce Department's Bureau of Economic Analysis show continued gradual change in the real GNP's rate of growth in 1984, which has eased from an annual growth rate of 10.1 percent in the first quarter lo 7.1 percent in the second quarter, and then to 2.7 percent in the third quarter. The automobile industry strike in the last half of September had only a small effect, estimated at less than a 0.1 percentage point reduction in the growth rate. Among the components that comprise the GNP, personal consumption and fixed investment grew at lower real rates in the third quarter than in the second quarter, while net exports decreased. Personal consumption expenditures increased $0.4 billion in the third quarter, compared with an increase of $20.1 billion in the second quarter. Nonresidential fixed investment increased $3.9 billion in the third quarter, compared with $9.6 billion in the second quarter. The other component of fixed investment--residential investment--increased from $60.8 billion in the second quarter to $61.2 billion in the third quarter. Real net exports of goods and services decreased $1 1.3 billion in the third quarter, compared with a $3.1 billion decrease in the second quarter. Although exports increased from an annual rate of $144.7 billion to $150.2 billion, imports increased much more, from an annual rate of $1 56.2. billion to $172.8 billion (table 1).

This Bureau of Mines open file report is one in a series of reports written about the Valdez Creek Mining District (VCM D) as a result of the continuing Bureau of Mines mining district evaluation program. This report presents the results of order-of-magnitude mining feasibility studies. The mining feasibility studies were conducted for mineral deposit models that were based on real and hypothetical deposits that occur in the VCMD. A total of 6b mine models were developed for application to the mineral deposit models. The goal of the feasibility study was to determine the monetary value per unit of minable ore that would cause the simulated cash flow for each of 66 mine models to achieve certain pre-defined rates of return for the invested capital.

The 115-year history of the Hall-Heroult process for production of aluminium has been characterised by a sustained technology-driven improvement in costs and productivity. In the past decade the industry has effectively transferred best practice into older technology with improvements through computer control of the process, and redesign of cell linings using computer modelling . Incremental development is now at the point where diminishing returns will apply for further technical improvement effort however, until the gap between technical limits and current best practice is addressed through major process redesign. The process remains a long way short of its technical limits in energy consumption, carbon anode consumption, cell life and product purity. Investment cost in new capacity is very high, supporting the retention of older and less efficient technology and hence limiting the application of best practice in environmental performance and occupational health exposure. The industry is a major emitter of greenhouse gases yet the process has the potential to release oxygen as the primary waste. All of the above issues will be addressed in the new century, but only through commitment to the necessary long-term research and development that is required to achieve a redesign of the process.

Mine site infrastructure for storage and delivery of hydrogen must be standardized and acceptable for routine and safe industrial use before fuel cell technology is adopted as a major power source. An initial study reviewed possible options for production, storage and delivery of hydrogen for underground equipment. The high level review included assessment of economic, operational, technical, and health and safety risks. Following this review, a subsequent theoretical study to select typical minesite infrastructure and for construction at an operating research mine is outlined.

Confidence in the strength of the U.S. economic recovery was considerably enhanced by third quarter 1983 profits, which showed a 12.8-percent increase over those in the second quarter (table I). Although the increases were not as great as between the first and second quarter of 1983, profits have grown each quarter since fourth quarter 1982. Both total profits and profits per unit of output increased, which the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) attributes to decreases in labor and nonlabor costs (per unit of output), as well as to moderate price increases. [ ] A number of durable goods sectors, however, continue to show profit declines, especially electrical and non-electrical machinery. Profits in the primary metal industry are still negative, but the economic picture of this industry is improving. Between the second and third quarters of 1983, capacity utilization increased somewhat in primary metal manufacturing and stone and earth mineral mining but did not change at all in metal mining. Capacity utilization in metal materials increased from 47.4 percent in the fourth quarter of 1982 to 64.2 percent in the third quarter of 1983 (table 2).

Through education, investigations, and studies and an expanded coal- mino inspection program the Bureau continued to dischargo the responsibility placed on it by Congress 39 years ago for promoting safety and health in the mineral industries. Although much still remains to be dono, definite progress was made in combating physical and psychological hazards in mines and plants. Accident-prevention cours os for coal-mine supervisory officials and special courses for coal-mine safety committeeman were inaugurated. First- aid, mine rescue, and other safety training was conducted for those engaged in all branches of the mineral industries. Assistance was given in recovery work after mine explosions and fires. Studies to reduce the danger of roof falls, the greatest single cause of fatal mine accidents, resulted in the development and adoption of new coal-mine roof-support techniques. Knowledge of the explosion and health hazards of mine and plant dusts and ways of pre-. venting them were advanced. Electrical equipment was tested for safety of operation in gassy coal mines, and emergency mine communications apparatus was developed and tested. More progress was made in the study of controlling flood waters that threaten life and property in the Pennsylvania anthracite region. More coal-mine inspections were made than in any previous year, and an impressive number of improvements resulted from the Federal inspectors' recommendations, even though many of them went unheeded. A program of con- trolling fires in inactive coal deposits on the public domain and private property was instituted during the year.

Few industries are more challenged by technical, political and market uncertainty than the mineral industry. Technical uncertainty in mining projects concerns the volume and quality of the resource, the processing and metallurgical parameters, the production efficiency, etc. Political uncertainty can take diverse forms and includes possibilities of change in the taxation system, risk of expropriation and risk of social instability or war. Market uncertainty depends on the market structure of the commodity; price and demand volatilities are the most common sources of market uncertainty. Intensive feasibility studies including these uncertainties and risks are required before investing up to billions of dollars in the development of a new mine. Current feasibility studies are often based on a single (or very few) mean geological scenario and simplified price profiles along the life of the project. Yet, strategic decisions, for example, the level of investment in exploration and metallurgical studies, adoption of a flexible, but more costly, mine design and risk-sharing strategies are made at an early stage. Over the last twenty years, Real Option theory has emerged as a unifying framework enabling strategic planning under uncertainty (technical, political and market). Geological and market variances (second order statistics) are pivotal for proper uncertainty quantification. The present study explores the possible benefits of combining modern geostatistical tools and financial techniques for project management. More precisely, the following questions are examined: Is geological uncertainty really an issue? Can we combine geological and price uncertainties in a unifying Real Option framework? A simple example aimed at illustrating the concepts involved is presented.

With the depleting iron reserves and difficult market conditions, precision in separation efficiency is of utmost importance. Classical local control options are predominant in the industry, but their inability to adjust to resolve application problems of interest has furthered the need of developing and implementing continuous control methodologies.This paper highlights the recent development in control of Outotec SLon® vertically pulsating high gradient magnetic separator (VPHGMS) including programmable logic controllers (PLC) coupled with distributed control system (DCS), on-site human–machine interface (HMI) control panel, advanced process control, continuous online sampling using Courier® 8 and additional modernisation packages including level control and cooling monitoring. Several studies have been conducted on blastability and prediction of fragmentation. The term blastability is used to refer the susceptibility of the rock to blasting and is closely related to fragmentation. Parameters that determine fragmentation by blasting may be divided into two groups. The first group consists of blasting design parameters. The blast design parameters are controllable parameters and determined by the explosive engineers. The burden, spacing between holes, bench height, drillhole diameter, stemming height and explosive density are all design parameters. The second group consists of rock mass parameters that are referred to as uncontrollable parameters. The uncontrollable parameters are physical and mechanical properties of rock and rock mass structure. The strength, modulus of elasticity, density of rock, number of joint sets, joint orientation and joint spacing are among uncontrollable parameters. The rock mass parameters and blast design parameters should be considered together to explain fragmentation process. In this study, a blast database was accumulated to use for multivariate analysis. The blast database contains the blasts performed near Istanbul region quarries and the blasts that were preformed in various mines in the world by the blasting researchers. The cluster analysis was used to separate the blast data into different similarity groups. Group memberships were analyzed and checked by the discriminant analysis. Then, the multivariate regression analysis was used to develop a prediction equation for blast fragmentation for each group. Finally, a validation of the suggested models was performed for various mines. The model comprises blast design parameters, mechanical properties of rock and rock mass structure.

An industrial port complex was constructed on the west coast of Leyte Island The work was started in December 1981 and completed in May 1984. This port complex includes a 665 m long wharf and can accommodate vessels ranging from a 60,000 DWT ore carrier to a 4 000 DWT general cargo ship. It now handles materials for and products from a copper smelter with an annual capacity of 130,000 t and a fertilizer plant with an annual capacity of 900,000 t. The Wharf structures consist mainly of interlocked steel pipe piles, steel sheet piles and steel pipe Piles. Material handling equipment such as unloaders, shiploaders, etc. were installed on the wharf. Site survey, planning, engineering design and construction aspects of the port development are discussed in this paper with particular emphasis on the wharf structure.

Editor’s note: Mining companies doing business in Central Asia, and parts of the developing world, should look for ways to promote community development through the introduction of appropriate technology. This article should be of interest to SME members. It shows sustainable development type projects need not be massive or expensive. Smaller, utilitarian projects are equally valuable to developing communities as they seek to develop their own economic and social infrastructures. Joint Development Associates International (JDA) began humanitarian relief and community development in Central Asia in 1992, following the collapse of the former Soviet Union. Appropriate technology has played an important role in the company’s efforts to assist those segments of society that are most vulnerable to poverty and disease.

Titanium can exist in three different oxidation states. Its oxides are numerous and in presence of iron and oxygen, iron-titanium oxide compounds can also form. Some of the oxides are non-stoichiometric, making the determination of the thermodynamic properties of titanium and its oxides in molten steel and in slag difficult. Therefore, for the assessment of titanium activity in molten steel using the electrochemical measurements of oxygen partial pressure, the identification of oxides in equilibrium with titanium is important. This paper reports on an investigation of solid titanium oxide inclusions, which have been identified by combining different methods of analysis on quenched samples. These samples were taken from a Fe-Ti-melt at 1600°C, quenched in cold water then mounted and polished for optical microscopy. The oxide inclusions were analysed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Both single crystal and polycrystalline diffraction patterns were used to identify the oxides by comparing the d spacings with those in the ICDD X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) database. XRD was used to analyse the oxide particles on the top of slow cooled samples. It was found in the TEM study that the similarity of the diffraction patterns of the various phases meant that unique identification was difficult to achieve in some of the diffraction patterns. However, TiO, Ti2O3, Ti3O5, Ti4O7were identified in quenched samples, while TiO2, FeO.TiO2and iron oxides were seen in slow cooled samples. "In order to improve the nickel concentrate thickener operation at Raglan Mine, two pulp deaeration cyclones were installed. These units obtained from Outotec Pty Ltd, also called the FrothBuster®, have been in continuous operation since mid-October 2006. The primary objective of the de-aeration cyclones is to lower the solids content in the thickener overflow by de-aerating the concentrate pulp before it enters the concentrate thickener. This dearated slurry should help decrease the nickel particle losses that report to the thickener overflow because of the flotation effect within the thickener.Optimizing the de-aeration cyclones has been a slow and ongoing process, however, initial testing is encouraging. The latest test results indicate a 50 % reduction (0.070 to 0.035 % solids) in nickel losses to the concentrate thickener overflow resulting in an additional $350,000 in annual revenues.This paper will present an overview of installing the de-aeration cyclones within a limited space, as well as the preliminary commissioning and testing challenges. This paper will also discuss the most recent concentrate thickener operating results since the de-aeration units were installed.INTRODUCTIONThe Xstrata Nickel Raglan Concentrator, located at the northern limit of Quebec’s Nunavik Region has been in production since 1997. In early 2002, the concentrator implemented the Zero Process Water Discharge (ZPWD) project to recycle the process water to decrease fresh water consumption and reduce discharges to the environment. Due to this initiative, the chemistry of the process water changed significantly resulting in flotation concentrate streams, which were very frothy and difficult to manage. This phenomenon has resulted in operational challenges in many areas of the concentrator including slurry pumping, flow measurement and concentrate thickening.In October 2005, the Raglan Mine underwent a conversion from an AG mill to a SAG mill operation in order to increase throughput and to optimize key process areas. As part of this project, the first two North American pulp de-aeration (FrothBuster®) units from Outotec were installed to improve the operation of the concentrate thickener. The primary objective of the deaeration technology was to lower the solids content in the thickener overflow by de-aerating the concentrate thickener feed pulp. This in turn was to reduce the froth, which accumulates on the thickener surface, and more importantly reduce valuable nickel losses to the thickener overflow because of the flotation effect within the thickener."

This paper is one of a series describing the mineral resources of the Nation, including location, history, production, ownership, geologic setting, and mining methods for most of the known manganese deposits in New Mexico, With few exceptions these descriptions are the result of field examinations by the writer. Of 32 counties, the 12 which occupy the western half of the State contain all the known manganese deposits, These counties are Catron, Dona Ana, Grant, Hidalgo, Luna, Rio Arriba, Sandoval, Santa Fe, Sierra, Socorro, San Juan, and Taos.
