This report describes in detail the circuitry used in the Automated Time Domain Reflectometry System and the testing and modification done to the system to improve the units performance and consistency. The analog ATDR software is described and explained in detail. Also attempts to implement the same Assembly Language program in a higher level language (PLM) are documented along `h two versions of the PLM program - one which uses a data filtering approach to limit noise and another which uses data averaging to reduce noise. The field testing of the analog and digital ATDR units is described along with the hardware modifications that resulted. The analog unit has been abandoned and the digital unit adopted for most field tests. Tests indicate that the digital units are much more consistent and less confusing for the lay-person to operate. The results indicate that the it can locate an abnormality in a test cable to within 5% of the true location (provided the cable phase velocity is known). The units can consistently locate shunt type faults which are less than 300 ohms and series type faults which are greater than 30 ohms.

As sponge iron is much like porous, coarse sand, it is a tempting material to use in place of coarse scrap iron as a precipitant of metals, for scrap iron is relatively awkward to handle and exposes only a small amount of surface to pregnant solutions. The results of the experiments described in this bulletin are largely a record of the behavior of sponge iron as a precipitant of lead and copper under laboratory conditions comparable to those that would obtain in a commercial plant were it attempted to secure the maximum contact of surface between solution and precipitant. Physically, the study is largely one of the rates of diffusion of the metal ions in the solutions and through the metallic coatings surrounding the sponge iron particles. The practical objectives are to remove completely the valuable metals from solution and at the same time to obtain a precipitate of good grade. In order to fulfill this latter requirement, the precipitant should be almost completely consumed. These practical ends are usually secured by having the two substances involved pass each other counter-currently-that is, in such a manner as to have the strongest precipitant in contact with the most impoverished solution, and vice versa. EXPERIMENTS WITH LEAD SOLUTIONS In nearly all of the schemes involving the leaching of lead from its ores the metal has been put into solution as the chloride, and fairly concentrated liquors have been employed. The solubility of lead under such conditions is comparatively small at best; the hot pregnant liquors from which the metal is to be precipitated are then made nearly saturated with respect to lead, and only a very small amount of acid is used. Therefore it was not as necessary to learn the behavior of the sponge iron in precipitating lead from solutions of widely differing composition as to learn under what conditions, and with what mechanisms, this precipitation might be carried out most readily.

During the second year of its existence the Ore-Testing Section has actively prosecuted work in the standardization of testing methods, in conducting routine tests and analyses for other Government agencies, and in the determination of recommended processes for the treatment of representative ores from mining districts. Close cooperation has been maintained between the members and units of this Section and those of other Sections. J. A. Woolf and J, B. Clemmer have continued to act in an advisory capacity and. R. E. Head has contributed valuable assistance in the microscopic examination of ores and metallurgical products that did not respond readily to standard treatment methods.

"INTRODUCTION During the last war, considerable attention was given to the search for materials or combinations of materials for use as expelling agents for aerosols in the well-known ""aerosol bomb."" These materials must be free of fire and explosion hazards under normal conditions of use.In cooperation with the Department of Agriculture and other Federal agencies interested in the work, the Bureau of Mines carried out a laboratory investigation on the inflammability of- dimethyl ether-dichlorodifluoromethane air mixtures. 4/The method of investigation was essentially the same as that used in a similar investigation dealing with the inflammability of propane-butane-dichlorodifluoromethane mixtures. 4/SOURCE OF MATERIALSThe dichlorodifluoromethane (commonly known as freon-12) and the dimethyl ether were supplied by Dr. Lyle D. Goodhue., U. S. Department of Agriculture, Beltsville, Md. It was reported that the freon-12 was manufactured by the Kinetic Chemical Co. Wilmington, Del., and the dimethyl ether by the Carbide & Carbon Chemicals Corp., Charleston, W. Va..The materials were obtained in small metal cylinders and were used as received. Before using, the cylinders mere placed in an upright position, and 5 to 6 liters of the gas was released from each cylinder to the atmosphere to remove any trapped air that may have been introduced when the cylinders were filled."

Rapid technological development has caused an increase in the demand for rare earths. Ancylite, a strontium rare earth carbonate, is a potentially significant source of rare earths. In this research paper, essential aspects of the magnetic separation and flotation processes for Bear Lodge ore are presented. A flowsheet is proposed based on an optimization of the variables and flotation simulation. The economic feasibility of the proposed processing operation is analyzed.

Introduction This paper presents in detailed form the results of settling tests that were published in a few preliminary notes in the April 1949 issue of the Bulletin (p. 166). Carborel is the trade name for sodium carboxymethyl-cellulose and aluminium carboxymethyl-cellulose produced by the reaction of monochloroacetic acid on the alkali cellulose to form an ether. The water-soluble sodium carboxymethyl-cellulose has been known in Europe for several years as sodium cellulose glycolate and has been marketed under several trade names. These cellulose ethers, however, are relatively new in North America, where the name carboxymethyl-cellulose is often abbreviated to C.M.C., or they are referred to as cellulose gum. The particular grade of Carboxel used in the settling tests in the mill of Chesterville Mines, Limited, is the high-viscosity sodium carboxymethyl- cellulose known as Carboxel H.V. It is a white, fluffy powder and is hygroscopic, although not deliquescent. Carboxel solutions in water are colourless, odourless, and resistant to beat and light. They are stable to alkalies, but are precipitated by acids when the pH is reduced below 4.0, and also by solutions of soluble lead, iron, copper, aluminium, and chromium salts. Solutions of Carboxel exhibit the properties of hydrophilic colloids.

Este artigo analisa as diferenças apresentadas nas microestruturas de pontos de solda produzidos através do controle da refrigeração do eletrodo. Para garantir a qualidade de uma junta soldada e aumentar a vida útil do eletrodo é importante que os parâmetros empregados na soldagem sejam bem ajustados, para que o ponto de solda também apresente características que irão garantir uma boa performance do produto final. O objetivo deste trabalho é fazer a comparação da qualidade dos pontos de solda produzidos, além de avaliar a estrutura formada em diferentes temperaturas do eletrodo no momento da soldagem.

Dentre as etapas de pelotização de minério de ferro, a fase de mistura tem grande importância devido ser responsável por dar homogeneidade a aos insumos e minério que serão processados nas etapas seguintes. Desta forma ela ajuda a garantir a boa formação das pelotas verdes e seu posterior endurecimento na etapa de queima. No desenvolvimento de misturadores, o auxílio de ferramentas de simulação são uteis para o correto dimensionamento destes equipamentos. Nos últimos anos a utilização do método dos elementos discretos (DEM) tem sido implementada para este fim e por isto vários cuidados têm sido tomados para ter-se resultados compatíveis com o comportamento real das partículas. Entre os fatores que podem inviabilizar o uso do método dos elementos discretos, o tempo e capacidade de processamento computacional tem sido um dos mais impactantes. Assim, este trabalho foi desenvolvido de forma a avaliar a influência do tamanho das partículas no resultado de capacidade de mistura de um misturador horizontal. Para isto, foi feito o escalonamento do modelo de um misturador e testado dois tamanhos de partícula avaliando o comportamento da mistura ao longo do tempo e o seu índice de mistura Lacey. Como resultado, pode-se verificar que o tamanho da partícula tem influência direta no resultado da simulação e que cuidados devem ser tomados no escalonamento destas para que haja compatibilidade entre as simulações e o comportamento real do sistema.

Este artigo apresenta o SALF, um software nacional desenvolvido para simular o processo de laminação a frio de chapas através do método dos elementos finitos. O programa utiliza a formulação implícita/rígido-plástica em suas análises. Simulações retiradas da literatura foram realizadas com o software, sendo os materiais simulados alumínio e aço, com espessuras de 3,0 mm e 1,0 mm, reduções de 5% e 30% e atrito de 0,06 a 0,15. Os resultados do SALF ficaram bem próximos dos resultados descritos na literatura. Desta forma, a partir de agora, as siderúrgicas nacionais têm uma ferramenta nacional para simular o processo de laminação a frio, a qual pode auxiliar na melhoria de seus processos e produtos.

The aim of the present research work is to study the influence of hard chrome covered skin pass cold rolling rolls using 2D/3D surface topography, i.e. roughness characterization. The common stochastic structure Shot Blast Texturing (SBT) does not meet all requirements related to the production line regards to the finished product. The Hard Chrome layer, applied on these SBT rolls, can improve the sheet surface quality and is of fundamental interest mainly for those steel mills that do not have another alternative to new surface structures such as those that may be provided by the EDT, LT, EBT, etc. methods. The function of the generated surfaces, obtained by these different methods is going to influence the tribological properties during the subsequent forming processes. On the other hand, they can increase the product final cost or require large investments to obtain such surfaces. The results here presented are in accordance with other recently published research work, showing that there is a relationship between these parameters, and that further detailed studies are needed.

A CBMM aplicou aços micro ligados ao nióbio em dois tipos de caçambas de carregadeiras de rodas que operam na usina de Araxá, Brasil. O objetivo foi avaliar os benefícios destes aços relacionados com redução dos custos, aumento da produtividade e vida útil dos componentes. Uma das máquinas analisadas coleta peças quentes de ferro nióbio para carregamento dos silos do britador. O uso de um aço ferramenta de alta resistência e resistente ao desgaste solucionou os problemas de deformação, desgaste e rachaduras durante o serviço, aumentando a vida útil da caçamba em cerca de 190%. A outra máquina avaliada foi uma carregadeira de rodas que opera na mina de minério de nióbio. O novo desenho com aços de alta resistência mecânica e resistente ao desgaste reduziu o peso em 14%, correspondendo ao incremento na capacidade de carga. A carga extra possibilitou um aumento na produtividade dos caminhões de 42 toneladas. Com os novos materiais, as trincas anteriormente encontradas na caçamba da pá carregadeira foram eliminadas, enquanto foi mantida a resistência ao desgaste antes oferecida pelo aço revestido com carbeto de cromo reduzindo também os custos de investimento em 7%.

The most recent modernization phase of the wire rod mill at Sterling Steel involved installation of a pre-finishing mill, using a Morgan Vee Mini-Block, a new water box and shear with utility systems and automation. The new mill configuration adds more stands to the mill for better drafting and is designed to improve finished product quality by providing a more uniform entry temperature, better control of the feed section into the No-Twist® mill as well as enhanced surface quality. The new shear improves cut length accuracy as well as decreases the amount of trimming to reduce yield loss. This paper explains the changes made in the mill and the features of the new equipment and automation.

Although grouted piles have been used for several decades since the idea was proposed in the 1970s, their design is mostly based on experience and unpublished proprietary methods. There is little research on grouting drilled shaft tips and even less on grouting shaft sides. This paper presents the analysis of 4 instrumented pile loads tests on base and shaft grouted piles from different sites in Egypt; with emphasis on one of the tests, to demonstrate the analysis process. The data from the tests are analyzed to model the development of unit side friction (USF) with relative displacement. A numerical model using the finite element software PLAXIS is used to investigate the effect of grouting on the surrounding soil stress state. The paper combines the observations from full scale pile load tests and results from the numerical model to suggest an idealized behavior of side friction development with relative displacement of the grouted part of the shaft. The suggested model considers an envelope of Unit Side Friction (USF) with relative displacement, initially dominated by the grout resistance then at higher relative displacements, the friction with radially pressured soil takes over. The grout provides very high USF values up to a relative displacement of 2mm. Then, the USF drops to a typical pile soil side friction behavior; however, this friction is affected by the contact stress between pile and soil, which significantly increases due to compaction grouting. INTRODUCTION Base and shaft pile grouting has been significantly developing in recent years to accommodate the unfavorable conditions in major projects such as the high loads in high rise building and founding on problematic soil formations. Grouting aims to decrease settlements and increase the capacity of the pile under axial load. The technique is first introduced by Kraft (1974) but gained popularity in the 1980s. Typically there are two types of grouting; compaction, and permeation. Compaction grouting is more common in pile foundations practice, and many researchers have provided case histories of pile load tests on base grouted piles and base and shaft grouted piles (Gouvenot and Gabaix,1975; Stocker, 1983; Ghazali et al., 1988; Fleming, 1993; Kusakabe et al., 1994; Robson and Wahby,1994; Joer and Randolph, 1998; Hamza and Leoni, 1998; Mullins et al. 2000; Littlechild et al., 2000; Suckling and Eager, 2001; Dapp and Mullins, 2002; Ho, 2003; Fu and Zhou, 2003; Brettmann and NeSmith, 2005; Ruiz, 2005; Mullins, 2006; Dapp and Brown, 2010; Beadman et al., 2012; Nguyen et al., 2013; Miller et al., 2013; Sinnreich and Simpson, 2015; Hui and Lin, 2015). Compaction grouting is meant to densify the soil around the pile and below the base rather than permeate this soil and increase its cohesion. Research showed that grouting increases the capacity of the piles by a factor of 2~5. The variation in capacity increase depends on pile type, grouting process, and especially grouting pressure. Although there are many case histories of pile load tests on grouted piles but there is no well-defined agreed-upon method to predict grouted pile capacity as typically done in ungrouted piles. Few lab experiments discussed the shaft grouting effects on the soil especially the compaction grouting. The experiments concluded that the compaction grouting forms a homogeneous layer between the pile and the soil, and a residual effective stress is achieved simultaneously with a significant densification of the soil around the pile with noticeable decreasing in void ratio. (Fattahpour et al., 2015; Wang et al., 2015). Recently, studies used numerical analysis to investigate the behavior of the grouted piles and the changes in the surrounding soil (Chiang et al., 2013). "At a current mining rate of 3,750 tons per day, La Mine Doyon is currently the largest gold mine in Canada. La Mine Doyon is an open pit gold mine located in the Abitibi area of Northwestern Quebec. The project is a joint venture between Soquem, a Quebec Crown Corporation in the resource development field and Lac Minerals Ltd., a publicly-held, resource development company. Lac Minerals is the managing company and operator of the project.Doyon went into production in 1980 on a very limited basis at 600 tons/day, and has seen a step wise increase to the current rate of 3,750 tons/day. Initially, all the ore was processed at Noranda Mines, Horne Division as flux for the copper smelter. The East Malartic Mill in Malartic was then upgraded and began processing Doyon ore. The third step in the progressive increase of throughput was the commissioning of the Doyon mill in November of 1982. Doyon ore is currently being processed at all three locations.During 1983, an exploration ramp was driven to explore the ore below the ultimate pit depth. Current plans indicate the sinking of a shaft and the commencement of underground mining during the next 2 or 3 years.Since its humble beginning, La Mine Doyon has always been a success; ore reserves have been extended to the east and the west and will soon be confirmed at depth, the mining and processing rates have been increased 6 fold, and the recovery has been increased from a designed recovery of 85% to over 95%. As part of the Boston Harbor clean up project, the new 1,000 mgd Deer Island Sewerage treatment plant includes ten 240 feet high egg-shaped "residuals" tanks. Contract documents called for these structures to be supported on 2,600 sixteen inch concrete filled pipe piles. The project site is underlain by highly variable glacial and marine deposits. Subsurface conditions vary from one extreme where firm glacial deposits exist at subgrade to the other extreme where 70 feet of medium stiff clays overlying weathered bedrock must be dealt with. The most common profile consisted of 15-20 feet of sands, 20-40 feet of marine clays, and 20-60 feet of stratified glacial deposits (commonly called tills) overlying Argillitic bedrock. Post bid redesign work, initiated as a cooperative effort between the owner and the general contractor, demonstrated that an $8 million savings could be realized if high capacity 48 inch diameter caissons replaced the specified pipe piles. A highly unusual arrangement of having the general contractor and specialty subcontractor providing input to the owner's engineering team allowed the redesign work to proceed on a "fast-track" schedule.

During the past 5 years the Bureau of Mines has published information circulars dealing with mining methods and costs at 78 ore mines; 7 circulars, each of which is devoted to a discussion of one of the principal mining, methods; and 23 circulars dealing with special phases of mining, such as ventilation, shaft sinking, tunnel driving, the cost of equipping and developing prospects and small mines, underground transportation, diamond drilling, and ground support. These circulars were written by many different authors, and in order that the method of presentation and the basis for compilation of data might be the same in all the papers the Bureau drafted an outline to be followed in their preparation. To clarify the data in these circulars, which are in the libraries of many engineers and mining companies, and the summarized data presented in this paper, that portion of the outline dealing with cost and labor-performance data is reproduced below.

THESE forums have been held annually since they were introduced by Mr. L. E. Djingheuzian in 1957. The response of millmen to questionnaires such as the one this year is ample evidence of the interest these create. This year's topic is unlike those of past years since it is an attempt to understand a new concept of grinding rather than to improve the old. Before, we were thinking in terms of 2-5 cents improvement in grinding costs, now we will be discussing savings of 15-2 5 cents. As a background for this forum we will begin by summarizing the major controversial issues relating to grinding with steel, many of which will undoubtedly apply to pebble milling. Our •task to-day is to learn what has already been done in pebble milling and obtain a fair overall view of this method of grinding.

The Bureau of Mines tested new designs of drag bit cutters with sintered diamond inserts instead of standard tungsten carbide tips. The bits were tested for orthogonal cutting forces, primary dust generation, and incendivity, with a standard plumb-bob type conical cutter (600 included tip angle) as the reference. Preliminary wear and impact-failure testing were also done. The results were mixed. Two new designs had forces similar to those of the reference bit, but one new design had about twice the normal force. This same design had almost twice the specific energy during shallow cutting but generated an equal or slightly lower amount of primary dust than did the reference bit. Incendivity was eliminated for two radial designs. One conical design had ignition only after more than 15 impacts, but the other conical design was incendive. Impact failure occurred, but not so quickly as anticipated. Over 7,500 impacts on a sandstone face, with a total cutting distance of more than 1,981.2 m, only scuffed the leading edge of the sintered diamond cutting face but put hairline cracks in the substrate mounting pad. Additional design and testing are needed to develop an optimum cutter, but prospects look good for this material.

THE flotation plant at Mount Lyell was erected, primarily, for the treatment of ore from the Lyell Comstock mine. These workings are situated over a mile in a direct line north of the North Mount Lyell mine, and are connected with the Reduction Work at Queenstown by a 2-ft. gauge steel tramway via the Queen River valley a distance of 7 miles. The property was purchased from the Mount Lyell Comstock Copper Co. After the disastrous fire in the North Mount Lyell mine in October, 1912, steps were immediately taken to make Lyell Comstock ore available for treatment, in order to relieve distress caused by any prolonged stoppage of work, and subsequently 13,032 tons of ore, averaging 3.38 %copper, 0.28 oz. silver, and 0.034 oz. gold; were smelted. When operations were resumed at the North Mount Lyell mine, it was evident that there was no economic advantage in smelting Lyell Comstock ore as compared with the higher value North Mount Lyell ore, which was also a better flux for the Mount Lyell pyrites, and that the future of the Lyell Comstock ore depended upon cheap mining and successful concentration of the ore. Therefore, extensive trenching and diamond-drilling was carried out, and a sufficiently large quantity of ore proved available for cheap extraction by open-cut methods. At the same time bulk tests by flotation were carried out at the Minerals Separation testing plant in Melbourne on different classes of ore from the Mount Lyell Comstock mine proper, followed by laboratory tests at Queenstown on all classes of ore available. All these tests demonstrated that the ore was amenable to the process, provided that it was ground finely enough.
