The new mining method of multiple strata blasting, called StratablastTM, is described in a separate paper presented at this conference. The current paper presents three case studies where the technique was implemented in three different configurations in large-scale blasts in Australia. The first two blasts were in the Hunter Valley of NSW while the third was at Ensham Mine in Central Queensland. All blasts comprised multiple layers that were blasted in a single drill and blast cycle, with unique designs applied to each layer to achieve different blast outcomes from the various layers.

"SUMMARYDuring December 1945, the Bureau of Mines began churn drilling the Winchester zinc deposit, 11 miles south of Joplin in Newton County, Mo. The deposit lies in a virgin area northwest of the Seneca fault. It is one of several deposits partly proven by drilling but never developed.Logs of 28 privately drilled holes had indicated a substantial tonnage without delimiting the deposit. It appeared that additional drilling might increase this reserve sufficiently to justify mining. A, total of 6,33 feet of churn drilling was completed in 17 holes drilled by the Bureau of Mines. Twelve of the holes penetrated minable ore extending the length of the known deposit and materially increasing its estimated tonnage.INTRODUCTIONDuring May 1943, the Winchester property in Newton County, was visited by an engineer 3/ of the Bureau of Mines, accompanied by Dr. A. N. Winchester, owner, and Charles Keith, lessee of the property. At the request and with the assistance of these gentlemen, examination of the property was undertaken. Logs of 28 churn-drill holes were collected, hole locations were surveyed, and available historical data were obtained. It was concluded that although existing drill holes indicated considerable reserves, additional drilling might increase the tonnage substantially. In addition, it was believed that better knowledge of this ore deposit could be obtained by drilling further, and this knowledge could, in turn, be applied to other less proven deposits in the same field."

The optical properties of Au nanoparticles have been known for some time, with both Au colloids and Au nanoparticles embedded in glasses having been extensively studied. In this study, Pt nanoparticles have been incorporated into Au colloids, and the linear and non-linear optical properties investigated. UV-VIS spectrophotometry, fluorescence spectroscopy and the z-scan method have been used to examine the effects of such additions.

This publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 299 natural gas samples from 22 States and three foreign countries. All of the samples were collected during calendar year 1972 as part of a continuous survey of the free world for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4863 and 576.4 Fourteen previous publications have presented the results of 9,902 gas analyses prior to 1972. This manual covers the operation and lubrication procedures for the Eimco Pumpable Roof Bolting Machine. This machine meets U. S. Bureau of Mines Schedule 2G Approval. This manual is divided into three major parts: 1. Machine dimensions; 2. operating instructions and; 3. Lubrication. Whenever front or rear, right or left arc mentioned it is assumed that the reader is standing behind the machine looking toward the boom. The boom is at the front of the machine. Safety When leaving machine parked on an incline turn wheels into the rib or block wheels. Do not run over power cables. Make sure your power cable is up out of the way so others can't run over it. Machine has a fire suppressor system for the power unit. The remote actuator (pressure cylinder) is located at the operator's station. Components and service procedures on page 59.

Identical in each report, the introduction summarizes research progress made in 1953 under the entire Synthetic Liquid Fuels program. One of the problems that is occasionally encountered during the continuous casting of DIN 1.4003 stainless steel (hereafter referred to as 1.4003) is the side bulging effect, a problem that is generally prevalent in ferritic stainless steels. This occurs because the unconstrained narrow sides of the solidification shell are not able to withstand the ferrostatic pressure once the strand has emerged from the mould. Coupled with side bulging, there is strand width variation at high temperatures, i.e. when the steel is in the ferrite-austenite dual phase region. Both of these dimensional changes to the slab profile create some processing problems in subsequent hot rolling operations when unacceptable width variations are encountered. The strength of the solidification shell and its ability to withstand the ferrostatic pressure during continuous casting is dependent on its thickness and phase composition when exiting from the mould up to a few metres downstream. From the study of the high temperature metallurgical behaviour of this steel, it was observed that a thicker solidification shell when exiting from the mould and a higher austenite volume fraction in the steel would be favourable for the reduction of the side bulging effect during continuous casting. It was also found that as long as the d-ferrite to austenite phase ratio keeps fluctuating due to variations in chemical composition and process control in the dual phase region from cast to cast, the strand width variation problem would probably persist. The remedy to this effect lies in more strict chemical composition and process control during continuous casting of this steel. The hot ductility experiments revealed that 1.4003 exhibits good hot ductility in the strand straightening temperature range with a minimum of 75 per cent reduction in area and this was attributed to the high volume fraction of ferrite (0.2 to 0.4) in the steel. This would provide a remedy to side bulging by increasing the secondary cooling rate of the strand in order to form a thicker solidification shell without necessarily risking transverse cracking and other surface defects during unbending. Barrick Goldstrike mine utilizes a carbon-in-leach (CIL) circuit to simultaneously leach gold into solution with cyanide and adsorb the gold-cyanide complex onto activated carbon for further refinement. If the gold bearing ore contains a significant amount of native carbonaceous material, gold cyanide can be adsorbed at these sites instead of onto the desired activated carbon and the gold is effectively lost to tailings in a detrimental process known as "preg-robbing." The preg-rob effect is considerably reduced by treating the ore with a surfactant, which is hypothesized to adsorb to and passivate the native carbon surfaces. Past laboratory and pilot studies have consistently demonstrated significant gains in gold recovery after treating carbonaceous ore with surfactant. With success in bench and pilot scale testing, a plant trial was conducted at Barrick Goldstrike to evaluate the feasibility of using an alkoxylated fatty amine surfactant (Ethomeen T/12) to aid in the leaching of high preg-robbing ores. This paper analyzes the performance of the surfactant during the plant trial in addition to the problems that occurred during the trial period. Suggestions for improvement are also discussed.

This study was undertaken to obtain some fundamental information about hazardous mixtures of coal dust and methane (firedamp) likely to occur in mines. Fuel concentration limits for ignition of mixtures of coal dust, methane, and air have been determined by a hot-gas ignition method. The limiting concentration of each of the two fuels was usually less than that corresponding to its lean flammability limit in air. The lean limits of flammability of coal dust vary with the type and size of the dust; in this study coal dust concentrations were less than 80 mg/liter. Ignition jets were turbulent pulses (emerging from a channel of 0.5 cm diam) resulting from explosions of stoichiometric mixtures of methane, oxygen, and nitrogen, Temperatures of the ignition jets were varied by changing the oxygen index (OI) = O2/(02 + Nj2) of the primary methane-oxygen-nitrogen mixture (adiabatic flame temperatures from 2,000° to 3,000° K). The objectives of the study were to establish quantitative relations between concentrations of each fuel at ignition limits of hybrid mixtures and to study the mechanism of ignition of these hybrid mixtures by hot turbulent gases, Empirical equations were fitted to concentrations for four coals, namely) Pittsburgh Seam (sizes A, B, and C), Sewell No.2 Seam, pocahontas No.3 Seam, and anthracite. Equivalences of coal dust to methane were computed from these equations; equivalence being defined as -Ac/Am, where c is the coal dust concentration and m is the methane concentration, each in milligrams per liter of air. It was found that the equivalence increases as the temperature of the hot-gas jet decreases. In general, the equivalence is also an inverse function of volatile content of the coal and a direct function of the particle size, However, volatile con-tent in itself is not a sufficient correlating variable, nor is the specific surface area of the coal dust.

[The utilization of Western coals and lignite is a continuing study of the Bureau of Mines, and storage of these fuels is of paramount importance. Since the seasonal demand for coal in the Western States triples between the summer and winter months, successful storage of these low-rank fuels would tend to level out this variation and should reduce fuel costs. The time is rapidly approaching when the West Coast States, particularly California, will annually import several million tons of coal from the Rocky Mountain States for additional power production. This will necessitate storage of large quantities of coal, and it is thefore important to develop experience in such storage. Dry surface storage, by virtue of its flexibility and low cost, is particularly adapted to the stockpiling of large quantities of coal. This report will, therefore be primarily concerned with such storage. Inasmuch as the problems of dry, open-pit storage are quite similar to those of surface stockpiling, experiences in pit storage will be discussed briefly. Although spontaneous combustion is a hazard in storing coal, experience has proved that heats can be avoided by proper stockpiling procedures. The purpose of this report is to show that the most reactive coals can be stored satisfactorily on the surface by avoiding segregation and by thorough compaction.]

This report analyzes the successful low-pressure gas drive in the Keener sand of the Bonds Creek oilfield, Pleasants and Ritchie Counties, W. Va.) and predicts its future performance. Core analysis from two wells and electrical and radioactivity logs were used to evaluate the reservoir characteristics. Production records over a 37-year period indicate that over 240,000 barrels of oil have been produced from the Keener sand by low-pressure gas injection. Decline-curve analysis shows that 165,000 additional barrels should be recovered from 108 acres of productive sand by continuing this secondary-recovery method.

Responsible environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices are not new to mining. It is the ESG acronym that has become the “flavor-of-the-day” with the stock markets, accounting firms, and investment strategists. This increased interest from the financial sector has heightened executive awareness and accountability to where corporate leadership and directors are proactively prioritizing ESG issues from the top down within their companies. This paper aims to convey what the authors believe one needs to know to be able to conduct and prepare effective ESG audits and reports. The emphasis is on how ESG fits within the mining sector, some of the ways that many mining companies have been practicing ESG responsibility for decades, the importance of effective communications with stakeholders, and the roles that regulatory and international lending institutions play in enhancing ESG practice on a global scale as a precursor to the discussion on ESG auditing and reporting. Without this background, the ESG audit may become a purely academic exercise.

Pillars are any structures left between two or more underground openings. The stability of pillars is normally considered to depend on shape (defined by width to height ratio), rock mass strength, extraction ratio, in situ stresses and the gross structural features (i.e. joints, contacts, faults etc). Recent experience has shown that pillar stability is also controlled by the relative orientation of the orebody with respect to the in situ principal stress. In inclined orebodies, pillars are loaded in compression and shear, thus creating unsymmetrical stress distribution. Failure mechanisms of these pillars are little known. This paper investigates the failure mechanisms of pillars under shear loading. Two dimensional elastic numerical modeling was used to examine the behavior of pillars in different orebody inclinations relative to the major farfield stress orientation. First, the paper reviews pillar design approaches including the empirical pillar design chart and uses numerical modeling to investigate the effect of the major farfield stress orientation on pillar stability. It is concluded that the empirical pillar design chart be used with caution, and that for orebodies under shear loading mine planning and design should take this into consideration since such geometrical orebody/stress relations put mine structures at higher risk of instability.

Samples of fine coal refuse were obtained from 11 coal preparation plants throughout the United States. These samples were characterized by ash analysis, particle size, and mineral composition. From the characterization, geographical locations, and the dewatering equipment being used by the plants, five sites were selected for obtaining bulk fine refuse samples. The selected coal preparation plants were using for final dewatering thickeners followed by: a vacuum disc filter, a filter press, a belt press filter, a centrifuge, and a settling pond. None were using thermal drying. The moisture content of the final cake varied from approximately 23% to 50% depending upon the feed material, flocculant addition, and the type of equipment. The filter press gave the lowest moisture content followed by a belt press and then either a centrifuge or vacuum filter. The centrifuge products were all dried to an approximate 5% moisture in a thermal dryer.

Micropore organosilicas (MOs) were synthesized using methyl-phenyl-polysiloxane as precursor. The MOs were characterized using several analytical and functional techniques. The materials were assigned as micropores materials, with specific surface area up to 642 m2 g-1 and yield up to 72.55%. The adsorbents have hydrophobic surfaces and were used for removal of diclofenac from aqueous solutions. The adsorption kinetic and isothermal data were well described by the general order and Sips models, respectively. Diclofenac exhibited a better affinity than NM and the mechanism of adsorption suggested that hydrophobic groups play a key role in the adsorption process.

Na Aperam South America, a geração interna de carepa metálica utilizada no PTG (Pré-tratamento de Gusa) como agente dessiliciante do gusa é insuficiente para suprir toda a demanda, sendo necessária a aquisição regular do insumo junto a outras siderúrgicas. Com o reaproveitamento interno da carepa pelas siderúrgicas, a compra do material no mercado ficou muito dificultada. Visando complementar a insuficiência do suprimento de carepa, foram estudadas e testadas duas alternativas de agente dessiliciante, tendo como fonte dois resíduos gerados no beneficiamento da carga metálica da Redução, a saber: Finos do Minério Serra Azul (100%) e Finos de Pelota (80%) misturados aos Finos de Minério Serra Azul (20%). Após os testes, a segunda alternativa se mostrou mais viável técnica e economicamente. A taxa de dessiliciação do novo agente se apresentou, inclusive, melhor que a da própria carepa. A geração mensal do novo insumo (700 t), complementada com a da carepa interna, conseguem suprir integralmente a demanda de agente DeSi para o PTG.

Tellurium (Te) is a rare metalloid that is predominantly produced from the treatment of anode slimes formed during copper (Cu) electrolytic refining. The US Government lists Te as one of the 50 critical minerals, partly, because of its use in thin-film photovoltaic (PV) technology. Given policy initiatives to increase Te production, it is important to evaluate the life-cycle environmental impacts of Te recovery as a by-product of Cu processing. The literature contains a few specific life cycle assessment (LCA) studies of groups of metals that include Te without proper regard to impacts per life-cycle stage of Te production or the effect of allocation on the results. This study builds an LCA model of the production system of Te from anode slimes treatment to evaluate the effect of allocation on life-cycle impacts. We build life cycle inventories using data from the Ecoinvent v3.7.1 database, literature, and engineering calculations and allocate impacts in proportion to products’ mass and economic value. The results show that economic value-based allocation yields greater impacts than mass-based allocation indicating the significant effect of the allocation approach on life-cycle impact estimates.

Uma das principais razões para o reparo de altos-fornos é a perda do revestimento refratário, principalmente nas regiões da soleira e onde são feitos os furos de corrida. A operação intensa dos altos-fornos pode resultar em desgaste e deteorização extensiva do material refratário. Isto pode, então, afetar a continuidade das operações e a vida útil do forno. Novo-Lipetsk (NLMK) e a Hatch desenvolveram uma abordagem sistemática para monitorar a condição do revestimento da soleira dos altos-fornos usando Acousto Ultrasonic-Eco (AU-E), um sistema de ensaios não-destrutivos desenvolvido pela Hatch. Inspeções contínuas e periódicas dos altos-fornos revelaram áreas com deterioração acelerada do material refratário, formação extensa de “elefant foot” e acelerado desgaste do refratário, assim como fissuras e outras anomalias. Para prolongar a vida do forno, mantendo a intensidade de suas operações, algumas modificações, tais como a melhoria da qualidade do coque e da limpeza das placas de resfriamento e adição de óxido de titânio, entre outras medidas, foram recomendadas e aplicadas.
