A recent analysis of 145 TBM tunnels of more than 1000km total length has helped to quantify the time dependence of utilization (U). In fact U = Tm, where T is time in hours and m is a negative gradient of deceleration. In poor quality ground, gradient m has a strong dependence on rock mass quality Q, for example m ˜ -0.5when Q = 0.1. Good investigation is critical for ensuring faster TBM tunneling then drill-and-blasting, which tends not to slow down (in m/hr) as the tunnel length increases. Anew design model called QTBM allows more reliable prognoses be made, and occasionally will disqualify the TBM solution.

The Kulumadau deposit represents an intermediate-sulfidation epithermal gold deposit (3.8 Mt at 2.3 g/t, Ag:Au = 1). Mineralisation is primarily confined to hydrothermal breccias within pre-existing fault zones, where it is disseminated throughout a hydrothermal matrix comprising chlorite-quartz-adularia-illite-I/S clays-calcite-pyrite. The host sequence represents numerous mid-Miocene pyroclastic flow eruptions within a tectonically active emergent shallow marine to subaerial depositional setting. Subsequent growth faulting was responsible for debris avalanches, which were subsequently cut by reverse faults. Faults were exploited by hydrothermal fluids, with the heightened porosity at the juncture between faults and debris material facilitating boiling of the ore constituents. Fluid inclusion studies suggest that fluid mixing between meteoric fluids and magmatic fluids, accompanied by boiling, were the primary mechanisms for gold deposition. All explosive materials produce a cloud of reaction products, the most toxic of which is nitrogen dioxide (NO2). In the study reported here, 4.5-kg (10-lb) charges of blasting agent confined in either thin-wall 10-cm (4-in) diameter galvanized pipe or 10-cm (4-in) schedule 80 seamless steel pipe were detonated in a closed chamber. The detonation gases were analyzed for NO2, nitric oxide (NO), ammonia (NH3), hydrogen (H2), carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen (N2), oxygen (O2), and methane (CH4). Data were evaluated to determine the kinetics of the oxidation of NO to NO2. Analysis revealed that the only mechanism for NO loss for the conditions existing in the chamber was the reaction 2NO + O2 6 2 NO2. The rate constant was 2.08 ?? 10-38 cm6 molecules-2 sec-1 for the rate equation -??d [NO]/dt = K ?? [NO]2 ?? [O2] for NO concentrations up to 100 ppm. The rate constant is in agreement with that recommended by Baulch, Drysdale, and Horne (1973).

In undermined urban areas, new solutions to subsidence problems are being sought. The Bureau of Mines is investigating a hydraulic backfilling technique whereby fill material is pumped as a slurry through a closed system and widely distributed in inaccessible mine workings from a single borehole. A full-scale demonstration was completed in 1973 in Scranton, Pa., which is underlain by abandoned anthracite mines in several coalbeds superposed one above another. A 30-acre residential area was stabilized by injecting about 450,000 cubic yards of crushed mine refuse into two coalbeds through five injection boreholes. Nearly 200,000 cubic yards was injected through one borehole from which the material moved into the mine workings on all sides; the injected material reached a maximum lateral distance of 640 feet and filled mine openings from floor to roof. In the gravity-feed method formerly used to backfill inaccessible mine workings, quantities of fill injected per borehole averaged about 300 cubic yards. The gravity-feed method required many closely spaced injection holes and provided incomplete filling. The new method, designed for inundated mines, proved successful also in mine workings about mine-water pool level. Distribution of slurry through a buried pipeline minimized disturbance to the community.

In January 1980, the Bureau of Mines initiated an experimental program to examine the fire and explosion hazards of one-hour self-contained self rescuers (SSRs). This action was prompted by a growing concern on the part of government and industrial safety officials over the potential hazards of these devices when deployed on a large scale in underground coal mines. Prior evaluation of the safety of these devices had been at best sporadic and usually limited to experimental models. The recent availability of preproduction models of a l-hour SSR fabricated by the Mine Safety Appliance Company* and a production model manufactured by Dragerwerk Ag Lubeck of the Federal Republic of Germany allowed for a more comprehensive and meaningful evaluation of their safety in underground coal mines. This report summarizes the results of a 5-month study of the potential hazards of these two items. During the course of the work, periodic progress reports were presented to officials of the Mine Safety and Health Administration and various mining organizations including the American Mining Congress, Bituminous Coal Operators of America. National Independent Coal Operators Association, and the United Mine Workers of America. The free exchange of ideas that occurred during these meetings had a significant impact on the direction of this study and a serious attempt was made to address all of the issues that were raised at these meetings. The authors are extremely grateful to the individuals that participated in defining the specific problems that could arise as a result of deploying the self-contained self rescuers in an underground coal mine environment.

The presence in the Cripple Creek district, Colo., of irrespirable gas or gases, generally known to consist mainly of nitrogen and carbon dioxide, has been recognized by members of the mining industry in that region almost since underground mining was begun there; the occurrence, origin, and possible control of these gases have been discussed in several articles cited at various places in this report. Similar gases have also been studied in other metal-mining districts, as later discussed. In March, 1925, there were two fatalities from rock-strata gases in the shaft of the Index mine, near Cripple Creek. Two men repairing the bell or signal line preparatory to reopening the shaft were lowered into irrespirable gases and died. Their bodies were recovered by rescue crews from the United States Bureau of Mines and .the Portland mine, Victor, Colo. These crews found it necessary to use oxygen breathing apparatus. In October of the same year a miner was trapped on the 6 level of the Midget mine by an influx of gases that filled the shaft to a point above that where he was working. Oxygen breathing apparatus was again used by Bureau of Mines employees, who were in the vicinity, and the man was brought out in time to save his life. These two fatalities and one near fatality seemed to show that additional investigation of the gases and methods of control might be warranted. Accordingly, field and laboratory studies were begun by the authors of this report after a visit to the district by M. van Siclen, then engineer in charge, mining research division, Bureau of Mines, and after conferences with the Mine Owners' Association of Cripple Creek and with J. T. Joyce, metal-mine commissioner of the State of Colorado. The mine operators of the Cripple Creek district and the State mine commissioner's office gave whole-hearted cooperation in this work.

Automatic control instruments were utilized by the Bureau of Mines for routine assays of large numbers of oil shale samples and other bituminous materials. The standard Fischer assay method was automated by automatically controlling the heating cycles of a battery of 12 electric heaters with electronic controllers and programmers. The condensers were cooled with a modified automatically controlled refrigeration bath. The complete assembly consisted of 12 retort units, necessary control instruments, and the refrigeration bath. This equipment was capable of producing more consistent results than those previously obtained with the gas-heated retorts and of increasing the output of assays substantially with no increase in operating personnel.

Liquid-solid separation and slurry handleability relate directly to commercial plant ramp-up success or lack thereof. The paper provides a well-proven approach for testing, scale-up and commercial application of difficult processes. Emphasis is placed on practical applications of rheological concepts developed both academically and empirically. The cause-effect relationship between the process chemistry and possible physical implications on the metallurgical plant operability is presented in a simple, direct form. Examples include recent results in areas of mineral processing and extractive metallurgy. Technical process risk factors and their mitigation are included in the discussion.

IN THE literature on the elimination of metalloids in basic open-hearth practice, there are a great many heats recorded in which excellent data on changes in slag and metal composition during refining are given, but in almost all of these heats either temperature data or weights and analysis of charge are unrecorded and observations on the physical charac- teristics of the slag are almost always lacking. With these points in mind, a test heat was made in which as complete as data possible on all the factors that affect the elimination of metalloids were obtained.

O equipamento estudado, a Linha de Inspeção é o gargalo na produção limitando a geração de produtos em volume ou qualidade. As etapas eleitas para estudo foram os setup’s das atividades de inicio (encaixe) e final (desencaixe) do processo, atividades não automatizadas, com maior intervenção humana que sofrem interferência direta dos tempos e métodos praticados pelos operadores. Utilizando o método dedutivo, tendo como ferramenta de apoio, a pesquisa bibliográfica para fundamentação teórica e realizadas observações de campo, determinou-se os melhores tempos para realização das atividades visando a sua otimização. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo modificar o método operacional nesta Linha de Inspeção visando o aumento da eficiência produtiva, aumentando a geração dos laminados à frio. O trabalho comprovou que a mudança do modo operacional proporciona um incremento de 8% na produção (1.800t/mes).

O mercado de Siderurgia no Brasil vive um momento de pressão causado pelas quedas dos preços internacionais e agravado por fatores internos como a redução no consumo, aumento do custo de energia e tributação elevada. Tendo em vista que, ao menos no curto prazo, não há perspectiva de melhoria, as indústrias do setor se mobilizam para adequar a esta nova realidade. A sobrevivência em um cenário de alta competitividade é garantida reduzindo custos de produção e manutenção e buscando aumentar a produtividade sem, entretanto, expandir a capacidade produtiva. Para atingir estes objetivos as indústrias focam em pequenas melhorias operacionais, com investimentos em pequenas modernizações e otimizações de processos existentes, em detrimento de grandes investimentos em expansões. Neste contexto observa-se um aumento na relevância do software de automação, que surge como alternativa para realização de melhorias, pois possuem custo relativamente baixo em comparação com reformas a nível mecânico e podem proporcionar ganhos importantes de eficiência e qualidade. Este artigo apresenta um estudo da utilização de metodologias ágeis de desenvolvimento de software para realização de melhoria contínua em processos industriais. Como exemplo de aplicação é apresentado o trabalho de otimização do software de automação de um laminador de alumínio com foco no aumento de sua taxa de utilização. A meta foi buscar um ganho de produtividade garantindo os mesmos padrões de segurança originais dos equipamentos e com impacto mínimo nas atividades produtivas.

Se desarrollaron materiales compuestos de matriz polimérica para toberas en cohetes; con dos zonas: una térmica para soportar elevadas temperaturas de combustión y una estructural que resista los esfuerzos generados. La zona térmica se elaboró con materiales de comportamiento ablativo, probados a temperaturas de hasta 2950°C durante dos minutos, los cuales fueron reforzados con polvo cerámico y/o subproducto de la industria siderúrgica (cerámico 2). Con base en los resultados obtenidos del comportamiento de térmico y de conductividad térmica del material ablativo, se construyó la zona estructural en materiales compuestos fibroreforzados (vidrio y carbono) con matriz polimérica. Los moldes se diseñaron en SolidWorks y se fabricaron por prototipado en ABS rápido y se elaboraron machos disgregables en poliuretano. En la zona térmica se usó un procedimiento de vaciado con vibración con diferentes tipos de matrices (poliéster, vinilester, caucho silicona) y de laminación para la zona estructural. Se evaluó el desempeño mediante simulación de las condiciones reales de operación mediante llama de oxicorte y quemador de ACPM, observando el efecto en la pérdida de peso, espesor, diferencial de temperatura, cambio de propiedades mecánicas, etc.; encontrándose un positivo comportamiento del sistema con matriz de resina vinilester reforzado con polvo cerámico 1 y buenos resultados con cerámico 2, así como una estabilidad en la zona estructural construida con fibras de vidrio y carbono. The 2006 North American Tunneling (NAT) Conference was held June 10-15, 2006, in Chicago, IL. The biennial conference was the first NAT conference by the newly formed Underground Construction Association of SME (UCA of SME). The UCA of SME was formed earlier this year at the request of members of the American Underground Association (AUA) (ME, April 2006, page 75). The conference included a keynote session, technical programs, workshops, a trade show and social activities. The conference exceeded expectations with 570 attendees. They included engineers, equipment manufacturers, representatives from government agencies and other interested individuals in the underground construction industry. The trade show was also a success with more than 86 booth spaces sold. Vendors included the biggest names in the underground construction and tunneling industry and included equipment manufactures, construction contractors and engineering companies. The trade exhibition provided a forum for interested parties in the tunneling industry to meet and discuss services, equipment and techniques.

This summary of international mineral exploration activities for 2012 draws upon information from industry sources, published literature and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) specialists. The summary provides data on exploration budgets by region and mineral commodity, identifies significant mineral discoveries and areas of mineral exploration, discusses government programs affecting the mineral exploration industry and presents analyses of exploration activities performed by the mineral industry. Three sources of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review of international exploration for 2012: 1) budgetary statistics expressed in U.S. nominal dollars provided by SNL Metals Economics Group (MEG) of Halifax, Nova Scotia; 2) regional and site-specific exploration activities that took place in 2012 as compiled by the USGS and 3) regional events including economic, social and political conditions that affected exploration activities, which were derived from published sources and unpublished discussions with USGS and industry specialists.

A process for simultaneously reducing and indurating iron are pellets was developed by Bureau of Mines laboratory research and confirmed on a continuous pilot plant basis. Moist iron are concentrate was balled, mixed with solid reductant, and heated at about 1,100° to 1,150° C. On a small scale, a variety of concentrates and fuels were utilized successfully. The pilot rotary kiln tests were limited to natural magnetite, synthetic magnetite, lignite, and anthracite. In both cases, partially reduced pellets with excellent physical properties were regularly produced with average analyses of at least 80 percent total iron and 60 percent or more metallic iron. These and other prereduced pellets were smelted in the Bureau's experimental blast furnace facility, Bruceton, Pa. With prereduced spheres comprising 85 percent of the burden, the coke rate was approximately half that with standard oxide pellets and production of hot metal was increased by 75 percent. Economic appraisal of the cost of making hot metal indicates that reduced pellets could be more profitable than any other iron raw material in both investment capital and daily cost of operation.

This report describes a field-test program to determine the effectiveness of a polymeric wall sealant to reduce the excape of naturally occurring radio-active gas radon from the walls of an underground uranium mine into the ventilation air. A 75-foot-long, dead-end drift with a surface area of about 6,000 ft2 was used as the test site in which the average natural radon flux from the normally dry rock was 16 fCi/cm2-s. The effect on radon emanation of wetting the walls with water to a depth of 3 inches was tested, after which the rock was completely covered with a coating of dry-mix concrete to provide a base for the sealant, an acrylic latex. Sealant was applied in two coats to about 0.25 mm thick. An overall reduction of average radon flux of about 75 pct was achieved. Radon production and other environmental values were measured continuously and automatically by a Bureau of Mines data acquisition system. A commercial microcomputer was programed to convert raw data to engineering units and to perform other useful operations while recording all data on magnetic diskettes. Direct measurements of radon flux from the rock surface were made by a charcoal adsorption technique.

The rapidly expanding economy of the West, with its growth of heavy industry, and increased steel production, is primarily responsible for the refractory clay industry's concern over the adequacy of the clay supply in States of the Great Plains and Rocky Mountains. Hence, the investigation by the Federal Bureau of Mines of the occurrence and use of refractory clays in North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, and Arizona has been encouraged by the major consumers and producers of this commodity. The Wyoming investigation is a part of the national program devised to close gaps in the domestic supply of specific types of clays to determine their characteristics and properties and to provide information that will assist the refractory-clay industry. Forty-two locations of clay-bearing rock in 17 areas in Wyoming were examined (fig. 1). Location 3 was not examined during this survey. Its description was taken from an earlier report. Locations 20, 21, and 22 were previously reported but were, also, examined by the Bureau. No samples were collected from these locations because field examination indicated that the shales were not refractory grade. The Hulett, Aladdin, and Newcastle areas are discussed in the section on the Black Hills district; the other 14 areas are described separately.

This report addresses remote monitoring of coal waste impoundments for stability. Existing automated geotechnical monitoring systems are described and reviewed along with details of instruments suitable for such systems. An impoundment in West Virginia which was in the construction stage was instrumented and monitored between July 1979 and may 1981. Sensors which measure surface and subsurface parameters including settlement, horizontal deflection, surface tilt, pore water pressure, seepage, pond level, and meteorological parameters were installed. Data from the 37 sensors were collected by on-site logger and transmitted by telephone to a central processing station in Seattle for recording and interpretation. Difficulties were encountered with telephone and powerline outages and malfunction of electronic units. Detailed descriptions of the design and performance of the system are provided along with evaluation and comparison with other systems. Recommendations for improving and expanding the capabilities of the monitoring system are given.

This paper discusses the geotechnical condition of bedding shears and small- and large-scale faults and shears in Archean banded iron formation (BIF) bedrock, based on observations of core and televiewer images. Information that can be collected includes the orientation of defects, infill thickness, strength and material type, defect shape and surface roughness.The spacing and continuity of bedding shears may be critical to slope design where performance is structurally controlled with bedding dipping out of a wall. The intensity of development of the bedding shear is a useful indicator of the amount of shearing a bedding surface has been subjected to. This can allow for engineering judgement to be used in adopting peak or residual shear strengths along defect surfaces when developing the design.The spacing and continuity of bedding shears may also contribute to the blockiness and degradation of a rock mass where the structural orientation is otherwise favourable. Additionally the condition, thickness and strength of infill of major fault structures can affect slope design and performance, depending on orientation.Comparison of the condition of structures observed in core with the corresponding in situ televiewer image has been made to assess what characteristics are most accurately captured by each technique and whether the additional information gathered from using the televiewer technique is justified by the cost. The question of whether the data collected by a televiewer is sufficient to ultimately replace the need for core is considered.CITATION:Baxter, H and Eggers, M, 2013.
