Capital and operating costs have been estimated for separating methane and hydrogen in gas - separating plants designed to produce 90 million scf per day of product gas containing a minimum of 90 percent methane . After a preliminary literature review of various separation techniques , three different processes --moving - bed adsorption using active carbon , oil absorption , and liquefaction -- were chosen for the cost estimates . Three different methane feed gas concentrations , 5 , 20 , and 50 percent ( cases 1 , 2 , and 3 , respectively ) , were chosen as representative methane concentrations for the separation estimates . Capital and operating costs were lowest for the moving - bed adsorption process in all three cases investigated . Operating costs declined from $ 0.24 to $ 0.06 per 1,000 cu ft of product gas , and capital costs declined from $47,490,800 to $7,411,200 as the percentage of methane in the feed gas increased from 5 to 50 percent .

Vertical ring and Pulsating Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separator (VP-WHIMS) is widely used for week magnetic mineral beneficiation or ferrous impurity removal from non-metallic minerals. Because of the complexity of this machine, mathematical modelling of its process is complicated and time consuming. In this paper, artificial neural network (ANN) and response surface methodology (RSM) were applied to evaluate the VP-WHIMS performance and optimize its main operating parameters in beneficiating of the Chadormalu hematite sample. The operational parameters of this magnetic separator are considered as: magnetic field intensity (2500-8500 gauss), pulsating frequency (20-100 %max), ring rotation speed (0.6-4.6 r/min) and slurry concentration (15-35 w/w %). Concentrate grade and recoveries (weight and Fe) are monitored as responses. Centre composite design (CCD) was used for experimental study. Four process variables were set using small CCD. Eight star points (a=±1), eight axial points (a=±2) and five replicates at the centre point (a=0) were chosen as experimental points. In ANN system, the best network topology was obtained as (4-5-3). According to the analysis of surface powered haulage accidents involving off-highway haul trucks in openpit mining, the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), reported 1,300 fatal accidents from 1990 to 2005. Of these, 163 were considered off-highway truck haulage accidents, and at least 23 involved collisions of an off-highway truck with a neighboring vehicle or a worker on foot (Nieto and Dagdelen, 2006). In general, an average of 18 nonfatal accidents and three fatal accidents occurred in openpit mining per year when equipment backed over the edge of an embankment, stockpile or dump point (Fessak, et al., 2003). The specific problems that need to be solved can be determined by carefully studying the accidents involving haulage trucks (Marrara, et al., 2004). Solutions to haulage truck safety must consider the human factors affecting each task even when engineering solutions seem most appropriate. In surface haulage, human performance becomes a critical issue because of the unusual demand the vehicle?s places on their human operators: ? Roadways and working areas change frequently in mining operations. ? The sheer mass of mining equipment such as trucks requires control inputs (e.g., braking) far in advance of the desired action. ? Rough roads, loading and unloading impacts can subject the driver to dangerous shocks and vibration. ? Visibility is sharply curtailed by the bulk of the vehicle generating large blind spots. All of the above issues can be attributed partially to the lack of visibility (Pyles et al., 2003). Driver visibility and communications are key issues to reduce mining truck accidents. Analysis of fatalities and injuries involving mining equipment demonstrates the need to develop new intervention and control strategies to mitigate the risks associated with mining equipment operation. Ongoing development of these and other new strategies is required to achieve a reduction of injury in the mining industry

For leach solutions containing primarily free cyanide, the silver nitrate titration method is a rapid and acceptably accurate means of analyzing for cyanide. However, in leach solutions containing elevated levels of copper, the titrimetric method significantly over-estimates the concentration of free cyanide and under-estimates the concentration of weak and dissociable (WAD) cyanide. The authors have developed a modified potentiometric titration method for determining WAD cyanide that overcomes issues with high copper levels in solution. The new MP-WAD method involves addition of a chemical ligand to the sample prior to silver nitrate titration to fully release cyanide bound to copper. Once released from copper, cyanide in solution is no longer affected by the presence of copper and titration results are quantitative rather than empirical. In multiple laboratory trials with synthetic solutions and complex actual leach solutions, accurate WAD cyanide measurements were achieved using the MP-WAD method. Analyses obtained with the new method were found to be within about ±10% of analyses obtained with the USEPA OIA-1677 WAD cyanide analytical method.

ALTHOUGH the element titanium was discovered by William Gregor in 1790, over a hundred years passed before it was put to commercial use. The first commercial application of titanium was as an alloy additive to iron and steel, and the first ferroalloys were produced domestically in 1906. Titanium pigments were developed somewhat later and have been produced in the United States since 1918. The use of titaniferous material in welding-rod coatings first gained acceptance ill the mid-30's. The metal titanium has only had commercial importance since 1948; domestic production for that year was 10 tons. The relative importance of these major uses of titanium in various forms may he gaged by the consumption of titanium dioxide (Ti02) for these purposes in 1954. Of a total of 440,000 short tons of Ti02 consumed in 1954, 95 percent of the total was consumed for pigments; 2 percent for welding-rod coatings; 1 percent for non-titanium-base alloys and carbide; and 2 percent for miscellaneous uses. The titanium-metal industry is in its infancy, but it has more than doubled its output every year from 1948 to 1954, reaching 5,370 short tons in 1954.

This report provides concepts for two automated longwall mining systems; one for operation in a 42 to 57-inch thick section of the Lower Kittanning coal seam, the other in a 57 to 72-inch thick section of the Pittsburgh seam. The Lower Kittanning concept uses a single-drum bidirectional shearer and 500-ton capacity 4-leg chocks and the Pittsburgh concept uses a double-drum shearer with 500-ton shields. Each concept is designed to produce in excess of 2,500 tons of clean coal per shift with a 6-man face crew. The automated longwalls consist of off-the-shelf control system hardware attached to standard longwall equipment. Control hardware includes a control and display console; prime and backup mini-computers; multiplex data transmission, power, and control lines; several remote terminals which serve as interface junctions; and various sensors and actuators located on the longwall equipment. The system can be operated either fully automatically, remotely or manually.

The Crandall Canyon accident investigation included an interesting and unexplained observation by rescuers that the ?barrier rib had shifted northward as a unit, as much as 10 feet.? This is not the first mention of such a movement, although such reports are rare. Historical accounts describe unusual movement and displacement of intact coal, cribs and timbers. Two movements of particular interest are the creation of gaps above coal pillars and falling of standing support elements without apparent damage. A dynamic boundary element program was used to explore movements induced by slip on geologic features removed from the affected panel. While the resulting models are much too simple to fully replicate these observations, they do show that the types of phenomena observed are possible. They can also provide insight into the types of motions that ground support elements are subjected to during large bump events. This was demonstrated for the case of a large bump in a Book Cliffs coal mine. Seismic information suggested the source mechanism to be normal slip on a fault. A model of that source showed initial dilation of the panel followed by dynamic compression and rebound ? consistent with underground observations. The initial dilation is important as it may allow slender standing support to shift or fall.

The main objective was to conduct a comprehensive program of library research and search of official files to prepare a list of articles dealing with actual occurrences of mine fires. This bibliography as now completed includes an annotated reference from each article or report cited, underlining the cause, extent, methods used, procedural errors made, results achieved, ventilation effects, and lessons learned from the operation of subduing the particular fire.

Over the last many decades, a significant amount of research has gone into the domain of slurry transport. However, design engineers still face many challenges with respect to prediction of pressure drop, critical velocity and other design parameters as a function of Solids % and Particle Size Distribution (PSD). The industry requirement is to transfer the slurry at the maximum concentration as possible (above 30% (volume %)) to make slurry transport more economically viable and to reduce water consumption. To facilitate the design and scale-up of slurry transport in pipelines and in process plants, there is a need for a correlation that can predict slurry pressure drops over a wide range of operating conditions and physical properties of different slurries. The objective of this study is to overcome the limited range of applicability and validity of existing correlations and to develop a generalized but more rigorous correlation applicable to a wider range of slurry sys-tems. The existing Wasp et al. (1977) method is based on multi-phase flow modeling approach. This study attempts to modify this approach by considering material-specific values of Durand?s equation co-efficient and by defining flow regimes based on particle Reynolds number. When compared with experimental data, the modified Wasp method proposed in this study predicts the pressure drop for slurry flows more accurately than other available correlations. Also, the pro-posed method requires minimal test/experimental data for a particular slurry system and can be extended over different input conditions. An iterative computer algorithm is developed to calculate the criti-cal settling velocity and pressure drop in a pipe as a function of Solids % and PSD. The solution method can easily be implemented in de-signing slurry pipes, design validation, and studying the different slurry transport scenarios. The modified method can also be extended to accurately predict pressure drops in dynamic pressure flow networks used in commercial process simulators.

Dutch State Mines [D.S.M] introduced the Heavy Medium Cyclone into the United States for cleaning fine coal about three decades ago. Since that time the general industry practice has been to deslime the raw coal at 28 Mesh (0. 59mm) size. The plus 28M material is fed to the Heavy Medium Cyclone for cleaning, and the 28M x 0 fraction is processed by other means (e. g. flotation or hydrocyclones). This approach recognized that 28M was the smallest size particle that could be easily rinsed on vibratory screens without excessive loss of magnetite, and without blinding of sieve bend and vibratory screen decks. Another reason for the 28M de-sliming was to avoid excessive contamination of the media with non-magnetic coal, shale, or clay fines. The most undesirable of these contaminants is the sub-micron size clay particles (2) that greatly increase the viscosity of the media and reduce the numerical maximum level that the media specific gravity can obtain due to the lower specific gravity of clay with respect to magnetite. The higher the fugitive clay content, the more severe the preceding problems become. During the last 30 years, many conventional Heavy Medium Cyclone Plants have been built throughout the world. In the United States, the initial cyclone plants were confined to the production of high quality metallurgical coal where lower gravities of separation were required than could be obtained from the conventional hydraulic or air separation processes. In recent years a large and ever-increasing number of preparation plants producing steam coal have started utilizing Heavy Medium Cyclone technology due to the environmental pressures being encountered to produce low sulphur coal. Due to the inherent characteristic of many coals of having a lower pyritic sulphur content at lower specific gravity fractions, many applications and markets are appearing for separating steam coals at much lower specific gravities than have been historically normal in the United States. Therefore. Heavy Medium Cyclones are being utilized to a much greater degree in this field, due to the flexibility of low separating gravity ability coupled with high efficiency when high percentage of near gravity material is present.

HOLLINGER mining operations have required development by 24 vertical shafts having a total length of 28,160 feet. Seventeen of these are sunk from surface and seven are interior shafts. Four surface shafts and three interior shafts are now active and, excepting the recently completed new main ore-hoisting shaft, the remainder are either abandoned, or are used for passes or for ventilation. The new shaft bottoms 60 feet below the 3,050 level, but there is much work to be done before it is placed in service. The term 'shaft practice' is intended to include shaft construction and a general treatment o typical equipment. It is a large subject for an organization the size of Hollinger and this paper is intended only to present the salient features. At the Southern Experiment Station of the Federal Bureau of Mines, reports are prepared from time to time on results of washability studies of commercially important coal beds in the Southern Appalachian region. The investigations that provide the material for these reports are made by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, in cooperation with the University of Alabama and the mine operators. This report records the results obtained on a sample of run-of-mine coal taken in June 1953 from the Pratt bed at the Davidson Coal Co. mine about 1 mile west of Graysville, Ala. One of the main objectives of a washability study is to obtain technically and commercially important data in connection with the best methods for preparing and utilizing the Nation's limited reserves of good coking coal. Such information is important from the standpoint of conservation in that it facilitates selection of preparation methods that will yield an acceptable grade of coking coal with a mini-mum of losses of coal in the rejects. The Pratt bed is one of the main sources of coking coal in the Jefferson County part of the Warrior field. This is the first time, however, that data from a complete washability study of coal have been obtained from this bed in Jefferson County. In the Graysville area, Pratt-bed coal has good coking characteristics and is used for blending with other coals in making metallurgical coal. The extent of its use in such blends is severely limited in this area, however, by the fact that it has a high sulfur content, which has not been reducible to any great extent by washery treatment.

The Federal Bureau of Mines coal-pyrite flotation process has been modi¬fied to produce a concentrated final clean coal slurry underflow that could be dewatered more effectively by filtration or centrifugation. This change was accomplished by redesigning the Bureau's two-stage flotation pilot plant facility and running the second-stage flotation step with undiluted or only partially diluted first stage coal froth concentrate. Results of the pilot plant flotation tests showed that substantial sulfur reduction could be achieved by flotation with undiluted pulp but some dilution is recommended for maximum selectivity. For example, coal-pyrite flotation in slurry of 25 percent solids yielded clean coal products analyzing as low as 0.7 percent pyritic sulfur and froth reject products containing slightly over 3.0 percent pyritic sulfur. In comparison, coal-pyrite flotation with pulp diluted to about 12.5 percent solids yielded clean coal containing as low as 0.4 percent pyritic sulfur and froth reject of 5.6 to 6.7 percent pyritic sulfur. Despite the need for some dilution, it was concluded that excellent coal-¬pyrite flotation selectivity could be achieved without diluting to 6 or 7 per¬cent solids as done in the earlier work. Thus the economics of coal-pyrite flotation would be improved by easing clean coal dewatering problems and by reducing second-stage flotation cell volume requirements.

The present work analyzes the latest results achieved in scrap based EAFs in terms of application of chemical energy, starting from the observation that the general trend is a reduction of oxygen utilization. Consequently a review is needed about criteria for evaluation of melting process efficiency and equipment design. If from one side the maximization of productivity remains one of the major goals, from the other side some aspects of present market situation, included price of raw materials, are requiring the maximization of process yield. Based on achieved performance figures of selected plants and theoretical considerations, the effect of chemical energy input intensity is analyzed focusing on transformation cost, productivity and total energy input. The effect of present practices with lower oxygen utilization is considered also in terms of global CO2 emissions. Finally, the latest Danieli concepts and technological tools for optimization of chemical input are presented.

Por lo cual, las empresas mineras preveen un programa basado en el desarrollo de la técnica de Gestión de Riesgos, que les permita un control en la seguridad del proceso. En este sentido, el presente texto desarrolla una técnica que identifica los diferentes factores que intervienen en los riesgos principales a través de los riesgos asociados; es decir, cuáles son esos riesgos asociados que influyen negativamente en cada una de las tareas que puedan causar accidentes.

"MANGOTE Surface oxidizied mine is a gold-bearing deposit in Congo's Mai-Ndombe Province. In the past decades, the ore has been exploited in a crude way by local farmers, which directly causes the severe processing difficulty and lack of economy of cyanide leaching. Hunan Research Institute for Non-ferrous metals (HRIM) is currently investigating options to recover gold through understanding the mineralogical characteristics of MANGOTE surface oxidized ore. Chemical analysis , X-ray diffraction(XRD) and Quantitative Evaluation of Minerals by SCANing electron microscopy (QEMSCAN ) were conducted on samples from mine site. The bulk analysis results showed that gold separation of gold from gangue minerals was feasible after grinding the ore samples to 86.53% -74µm and adjusting the pulp specific weight at 100g/L, and gravity separation was conducted with using spiral chute after grading of fine particles. The research results highlight relationship between mineralogical characteristics of abandoned ore and economy of comprehensive utilization that might be directive experience to similar cases. INTRODUCTION The occurrence state of gold in natural gold minerals determines the basic recovery and recovery effect of gold(Komnitsas, C., & Pooley, F. D. 1989). The occurrence of gold in the ore refers to the form of gold in the ore.Generally the existing state of gold can be divided into four major categories according to the viewpoint of the dispersion system: independent minerals and gold, a coarse dispersed system;colloidal gold, a colloidal dispersion; solid solution gold, is atomic ion dispersion; adsorptive gold, according to the adsorbed particle is the micelle or ion, respectively is a colloidal dispersion or ion dispersion(Mao, S. D., & Yang, R. S. 2009; Liu, J. J. et al. 2007; Horisberger, M., & Rosset, J. 1977; Li, Y., & Audétat, A. 2013).With the increasing technology of comprehensive utilization of resources,varied plants can now process different gold ores with various occurrence states(Neesse, T. 2014; 7. Ogundare. et al.2014)."

Este trabalho aborda um estudo de caso sobre a transferência do conhecimento siderúrgico de colaboradores da empresa para o sistema que realiza o controle de produção da Usina de Cubatão. Este processo de transferência foi realizado em etapas até a implantação do sistema que registra os principais eventos realizados pelas máquinas operacionais. Estes registros são armazenados em banco de dados e com o uso de ferramentas, podem ser apresentados em relatórios e gráficos. Com isso, a empresa possui um sistema de produção muito confiável, por ter condição de analisar e diagnosticar cada etapa do processo de produção e acompanhar com precisão as falhas e acertos operacionais. Quando há estabilidade no processo e todos os eventos acontecem de acordo com a condição normal de operação, o sistema possibilita um controle aprimorado no consumo de gás e da produtividade. O método utilizado é baseado em um projeto de experimentos que examina a influência dos principais parâmetros de controle no processo de produção industrial.

Blasting in the heart of the historic Byward Market District of Canada’s capital, Ottawa, presents a unique set of challenges. The obvious difficulties arising on projects requiring blasting within 3 m (10 ft) of 125 year old buildings in various states of disrepair have been encountered and successfully dealt with countless times before. The complexities increase exponentially when tenuous property boundaries, unknown structural details, litigious histories and the need for encroachment agreements lead to individuals with competing interests all able to impact the same operation. Blasting on three projects in the Market was started in early 2005 after months of negotiation. Ultimately, the potential for the projects to proceed hinged on the ability to successfully disseminate blast data to the various stakeholders. As part of the agreements drawn up, property owners demanded immediate notification of the measured vibration levels with contract provisions including clauses such that any exceedance of the USBM criteria immediately triggered project shut down and complete blasting program redesign, and approval by all parties. With stakeholders located in various cities and, in some instances, on various continents, a conventional attended monitoring strategy would not satisfy the requirements. In response to the critical reporting need, Explotech Engineering Ltd. installed unattended monitoring stations around the sites, all incorporating wireless telemetry. After each blast, data was automatically transferred from the monitoring stations to a web-linked server via the wireless network, where it was immediately available to project stakeholders through a password protected website. The solution required a unique blend of data acquisition, telemetry, database, and security technologies, all married to produce a reliable system that was easy to maintain and use. While these types of systems were originally developed for use as permanent monitoring networks in operating mines and quarries, monitoring professionals are increasingly benefiting from the technology on temporary building projects that have typically been the realm of attended monitoring strategies. Globally, this has emerged as a solution to provide more timely access to data for stakeholders, and to minimize the legal exposure from multiple violations of vibration limits. As this trend is likely to continue, the regulated vibration control industry is likely to see a continued shift in technology development to leverage wireless networks and the Internet to continue to improve data transfer, archiving and distribution.
