This report presents the results of a statistical analysis of a limited amount of sample and assay data from a production panel in an open - pit phosphate mine in the Phosphoria formation in Idaho . A frequency distribution analysis is shown for the assays , sample interval lengths , and products of assay and sample interval length for the millshale , furnace - shale , and main phosphate beds . Correlation techniques were used to show the relationships between assays and sample interval lengths . Within- drill - hole and between - drill - hole correlation were also examined as a means of predicting grade trends in the ore . Simulation methods , utilizing a digital computer , were used to establish assay populations that could be used for estimating grade of ore , cutoff grades , and deposit or bed identification .

For nearly 30 years the Bureau of Mines has contended that mine explosions can be prevented and has pointed out to the industry ways and means by which they could be avoided. The record of co2l-mine explosions • during the past fiscal ?Bar bears out the :Bureau1s contention, inasmuch as fewer men were killed by coal-mi~e e:xplosions in the United States during that year than in :gi_y corresponding 12 months in the history of coal mining in the United States, insofar as records are available; and more than a year has elapsed since·a major explosion (in which five or more men were killed) has occurred, this being t.1-J.e first continuous 12- month period without a major coal-mine explosion disaster in the United States in more than 60 years. The methods of preventing mine e:iiplosions are well known to experienced, well-informed persons cngnged in coal mining. Despite this knowledge, many coal-mine operutors continue to use practices and methods that they should know have resulted in countless explosions, and mine workers persist in following past procedure or in breaking safety rules and practices almost certain eventually to result in disaster. ' Virtually all explosions are the result of human failure, such as carelessness or neglect by officials or workers or others. These human failures can be corrected chiefly by ed.ucation and proper and adequate supervision and strict discipline. In some instances mine officials are ·lax, careless, poorl~• informed, and often incompetent; end in many instances miners have repulsed the introduction of known preventive methods because of sheer obstinacy, ignorance, heedlessness, or possibly fear that the operator was trying to o'bta.in some unfair adva.,.'1. tago or would neglect some other phase of accident or e,:plosion prevention. 1. This investigation shows that the Sewanee bed is the only coal bed being mined in Sequatchie County. Other coal beds are present, but as they do not contain known recoverable reserves, estimates of reserves were made only for the Sewanee bed. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in the Sewanee bed, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and on 1,800 short tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated to be 76 million short tons as of January 1, 1953. Of this total 62 million short tons represent coal 28 inches and more thick. Areas in the bed were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics were insufficient to permit making an estimate conforming with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves determined by this investigation.

The ore deposit of the Iron King mine occurs in a group of steeply-dipping metamorphosed eugeosynclinal volcanic and sedimentary rocks of Precambrian age. Within this sequence, the ore deposit lies at the contact of a unit made up of rhyolitic tuff and interbedded andesite and a structurally underlying series consisting of andesitic tuffs, minor rhyolitic tuffs, and argillaceous sediments. Field evidence suggests that these rocks have been overturned. The ore deposit is made up of a series of overlapping, conformable or bodies consisting of massive pyrite and associated lenses of massive quartz. These contain recoverable amounts of gold, silver, lead, zinc, and copper. A parallel zone of copper mineralization occurs within the hanging-wall rocks. The deposit is considered to belong to a large and important group characterized by mineralogical composition and the lithology and structural type of the host rocks. Evidence regarding the origin of the deposit is reviewed, and it is concluded that the ore bodies were formed through the agency of volcanic hot springs on, or near, a submarine surface of deposition

The Bureau of Mines, under the sponsorship of the Space Nuclear Propulsion Office, conducted a laboratory-scale hydrogen safety study which determined several combustion characteristics of hydrogen diffusion flames. Experiments show that ambient air may enter the top of a hydrogen flare stack when the hydrogen flow is low. A new concept, supported by photographic evidence, predicts that diffusion flames burning in air on a wide, upright pipe (stack) and fed with slow, upward flows of buoyant gas will induce a downward flow of air along the walls of the pipe that can support combustion within the pipe. Predicted flamedip limits agree roughly with experimental values determined on 6-, 12-, and 18-inch-diameter stacks and increase with increasing stack diameter. Measurements were made of the limiting flow at which a hydrogen diffusion flame blows out in still air. By means of an empirical application of the critical boundary 8 velocity gradient concept, these data lead to a blowout limit of about 10 reciprocal seconds for a hydrogen diffusion flame. Burning rates of large hydrogen diffusion flames ranging from about 0.03 to 1 ft/sec were used to predict approximate flame heights on flare stacks. Temperatures of larger hydrogen diffusion flames up to about 3,600° F were observed, but the most representative value appears to be about 2,600° F. It was found that crosswinds do not strip significant amounts of unburned hydrogen from its diffusion flame and that water-cooled flare stacks are not likely to be damaged when flame is blown back into them by opposing winds.

ELECTRIC smelting tests were conducted at the Northwest Electro-development Experiment Station, Albany, Oreg., to develop a feasible process for producing silicomanganese from siliceous manganiferous material. The Jackson County, Oreg., material used was massive and contained rhodonite as the most abundant mineral. Both raw and beneficiated materials were tested; various proportions and types of fluxes and reductants were used to make up the furnace charges. The silicomanganese product was used successfully in manufacturing various steels at industrial plants. The manganese content of the samples ranged from 23 to 28 percent; silica plus alumina content was as high as 55 percent-about four times the maximum specification for Metallurgical-grade ore. Sink-float laboratory tests indicated that the manganiferous material was amenable to beneficiation. Over 2 tons of rhodonite concentrate was prepared for smelting tests in a sink-float operation. Only the minus-3/4-inch, plus-8-mesh fraction was fed to a heavy-medium cone; over 97 percent of the manganese was recovered in the sink product, which contained 32.4 percent manganese and 44 percent silica plus alumina. About 25 percent of the silica was removed in the float product.

Four coals were treated in the Humphreys spiral concentrator, and the products were examined by float-and-sink and screen-sizing tests to determine fundamental performance characteristics. The efficiency of the separation between coal and impurity was shown to be influenced greatly by particle size.

Quality assurance and quality control (or QAQC) plays a key role in safeguarding the level of confidence of the data generated during mineral exploration and mine development, and is also part of the reporting code requirements for resource estimation and reporting, as well as mining investment. Implementation of good policies and working protocols in quality management will result in the generation of reliable information, which is critical for decision-making on the future of the mining project. The use of certified reference materials, i.e., standard, blank, and duplicate samples, proves effective and efficient for ensuring the level of data confidence in terms of precision, accuracy, and sample contamination. This is well demonstrated by the practice of QC in the exploration programme for the chrysotile tailings storage facilities of Havelock Mine, using 1254 samples from 53 drill-holes. Different statistical tools were applied to analyse the assay results from these samples. The outcome substantiates that the QC practice established during the Havelock exploration project is aligned to best practice guidelines in the industry. The resource delineated indicates that the tailings material at Havelock could potentially become a significant source of supply to the global magnesium market.

Methods are proposed for predicting concentrations of nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide in the combustion gases of flames, specifically of lean, stoichiometric, and rich propane-air flames. Calculations are based on kinetic and thermodynamic theory. These theoretical data are compared with concentrations observed experimentally downstream of flat grid-type burner flames (approximately 25,000 Btu/hr) that were used to simulate gas appliances such as water and space heaters. Air pollutant concentrations are also computed for (1) flames chemically perturbed by recycling flue gases into the primary fuel-air mixtures; (2) flames thermally perturbed by cooling the burned gases at different rates; and (3) flames perturbed by combination of these two effects. In general, experimental and computed concentrations agree to within a factor of 2 to 7 with the experimental values always being higher than the theoretical. The theoretical analysis indicates that cooling the primary flame by recycling cold flue gases (with and without excess air) reduces the relative emission of nitric oxide and increases emission of carbon monoxide if the flame stoichiometry does not radically change. Cooling rates of about 5,500° to 10,000° R/sec starting at about 3,500° R generally suffice to prevent nitric oxide concentrations in lean flames from increasing much above the initial values at the combustion zone; these same cooling rates do not prevent oxidation of most of the initial carbon monoxide.

Alaska contains many critical and strategic minerals that are scarce in the conterminous United States. Among these are tin, tantalum, and columbium. This Bureau of Mines report summarizes available data on the production, reserves, and occurrences of these minerals in Alaska. Alaska produces about 200,000 lb of tin per year, with historical production since 1901 estimated to have totaled 5,830,600 lb. Measured, indicated, and inferred tin reserves total over 140,000,000 Ib. Much of the tin production has been from the placer mines of the western Seward Peninsula; however, most of the reserves are in that area's lode deposits. Alaskan tin occurrences are part of a belt of tin mineralization that extends along the western coast of North and South America. The Alaskan portion of this "tin belt" comprises placer occurrences and lode occurrences of five major types: greisen, vein, skarn, pegmatite, and volcanogenic massive sulfide. Greisen and vein occurrences are the most abundant, but skarn deposits have historically been the most economically important. Columbium and tantalum have not been produced in Alaska; however, they may be recoverable as byproducts of tin, tungsten, gold, or uranium mining. Approximately 135,000 Ib of columbium oxide (Cb205) are inferred within the Tofty placer deposits in the Manley Hot Springs district.

"INTRODUCTION The Edison mine comprises workings on two irregular spodumene-bearing pegmatite dikes which outcrop near the town of Keystone in the southern portion of the Black Hills of South Dakota. The Bureau of Mines conducted an investigation of the Edison mine as part of a comprehensive study of the lithium mineral-production possibilities in the Black Hills area. The work was undertaken during the Second World War, when the demand for certain lithium salts and compounds exceeded the then small productive capacity of the industry.During the course of the project, the Bureau of Mines completed 13 diamond core-drill holes, aggregating 2,114.5 feet of drilling. Twenty-six cannel samples were taken from the main Edison shaft, and 13 miscellaneous samples were obtained to permit analysis of the efficiency of phases of mining and sorting operations. Metallurgical tests were made by the Bureau of Mines to investigate the feasibility of beneficiating spodumere-bearing ores from the Edison mine. 3/"

This report summarizes the results of laboratory investigations conducted by the Federal Bureau of Mines to obtain hydrometallurgical information on the dissolution of mercury sulfides from ores, flotation concentrates, and pure mercuric sulfides. Statistical methods were used to design the experiments and evaluate the resulting data. Studies demonstrated that cinnabar is readily soluble in sodium sulfide, partly soluble in potassium sulfide, and essentially insoluble in ammonium sulfide. Additions of sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide to sodium sulfide solutions increased mercury extraction slightly; when either was added to potassium sulfide or ammonium sulfide solutions, mercury extraction was equal to that of sodium sulfide. Tests at the Albany Metallurgy Research Center showed that sodium sulfide would completely dissolve chemically pure mercuric sulfide, more than 95 percent of the cinnabar in 5-percent mercury flotation concentrates, and 60 to 90 percent of the cinnabar in low-grade ores. The double-leach tests showed that potassium sulfide would dissolve over 90 percent of the arsenic in mercury-arsenic products and 1 to 10 percent of the mercury; then sodium sulfide-hydroxide solutions would dissolve 80 to 90 percent of the remaining mercury and 5 to 10 percent of the arsenic.

Froth flotation is a widely used, cost effective coal cleaning process. However, its high process efficiency is limited to a narrow particle size range between approximately 50 to 600 µm for coal and 10 to 100 µm for minerals. Beyond this range, the efficiency of froth flotation decreases sharply, especially for difficult-to-float coal fines of weak hydrophobicity (e.g., oxidized coal). This study was aimed at enhancing recovery of an Illinois fine coal sample using a flotation column featuring a hydrodynamic cavitation nanobubble generator. Nanobubbles that are mostly smaller than 1 µm can be formed selectively on hydrophobic coal particles from dissolved air in fine coal slurry. Results indicate that combustible recovery of a -150 µm coal was increased by 5-50% for different size fractions in presence of nanobubbles, depending on process operating conditions. Other major advantages of the nanobubble flotation process include lower collector dosage and air consumption since nanobubbles are produced from air naturally dissolved in water and they act as a secondary collector on particle surfaces, thereby resulting in considerably lower operating costs. "Abstract Construction clients want their foundation solutions to be right first time, every time; but it is often the geotechnical contractor who carries the most risk in achieving this. Robust validation to ensure that the installed geotechnical product is appropriate for the encountered ground conditions, will perform as required and be correctly measured for payment and record purposes is very important to minimise the contractor’s and the client’s risk. This paper outlines the development and operation of a robust real-time installation monitoring system which controls and validates the installation of driven cast in-situ (DCIS) piling. Using state of the art information technology the system allows the design engineer to interrogate the data acquired from the piling rig via his computer as the piles are completed. The use of the validation process, where data acquired during the driving of DCIS piles can be processed to estimate the finished pile performance, will be explained with reference to a new case study on large diameter DCIS piles. Examples of the routine use of the system will be presented to illustrate how automated monitoring of installation parameters can be used to raise the standard of reliability, efficiency and sustainability on piling projects. The conclusions to the paper will cover the key features and operational challenges characterising real-time monitoring of the execution of geotechnical works as developed from a number of years of experience of using a rig based data acquisition instrumentation system.INTRODUCTIONDriven Cast In-Situ (DCIS) piles have a long and successful history of use worldwide. The process, where a temporary steel drive tube, sealed at the bottom with a sacrificial base plate, is driven into the ground and filled with concrete before the tube is withdrawn, is well known (BS EN 12699, 2001 and Egan, 2013). Examples of large structures supported on DCIS piles installed by Keller UK include the Millennium Dome (now the O2 Arena) and the 2012 Olympic stadium in London.In recent times advances in piling rig instrumentation and telecommunications have enabled a new level of sophistication in the recording of installation parameters and the validation of pile performance. It is now possible to embed these features into the DCIS design and installation process which has improved the quality and efficiency of DCIS piling.This paper summarises the development and operation of a real time data acquisition and processing system for DCIS piling, but which is equally applicable to other forms of driven piling (for example concrete precast piling)."

Mining began in Pend Oreille and Stevens Counties about 1885, Lead and zinc have been the principal products, and the area has supplied nearly all the output of these metals in the State. Fend Oreille County's output of lead and zinc from 1902 to 1956 was 110,700 and 229,600 tons, respectively. The Stevens County total was 54,100 tons of lead and 87,600 tons of zinc. Copper ore was produced mainly from the United Copper mine, Chewelah district, from 1912 to 1920; the principal gold mine was the First Thought, Orient district, which was active from 1904 to 1942. Approximately 225 mines and prospects produced; most of the ventures were on a small scale. The total value of gold, silver, copper, lead, and zinc produced from 1902 to 1956 was $75.2 million in Pend Oreille County and $39.4 million in Stevens County. INTRODUCTION In compiling the figures for this report, use was made of Bureau of Mines permanent records of nine production, the annual tabulations of producing mines, and the Minerals Yearbook. Requests to publish individual data, obtained from the annual production canvass, were made to the latest recorded operators of all mines in the area. Response to this request was good; therefore, it was possible to make the tables nearly complete. In a few instances the producer requested that the production data remain confidential, and in others it was not possible to reach the mine operator at his last known address. The district and county tables combine statistics for all mines, including those mines whose output could not be published separately.

This paper summarizes a survey of fine-grinding practice in ore-concentrating plants throughout the United States, Alaska, Canada, Mexico, and Cuba as reported in the Bureau of Mines Information Circulars on milling methods. The survey covers 49 concentrators, which have a combined capacity of over 160,000 tons per day. In these plants 470 ball, rod, and pebble mills prepare material for flotation, gravity concentration, amalgamation, cyanidation, and air separation. The ores are those of gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, molybdenum, feldspar, and pyrite. The metallurgy is that of the period 1928-32. Of these 49 concentrators, 36 are in the United States. They can treat 134,400 tons per day, and they have 326 fine-grinding mills. In the United States there are about 100 active or temporarily idle concentrators, exclusive of the many plants in the Tri-State zinc district, the washeries of the Lake Superior iron ranges and the Florida phosphate area, and small gold and silver concentrators. These 100 plants have an estimated capacity of 290,000 tons per day and employ about 650 ball, rod, and pebble mills. Consequently, since this paper covers about half of the production of this country it may be considered as particularly representative of fine grinding in ore mills in the United States.

The Bureau of Mines determined coal-cutting forces and primary dust generation of four styles of radial gage bits as used on end rings of continuous mining machines. Direct comparisons for reference were made with two widely used conical plumb-bob types having 60' and 90' (nominal) included tip angles. The cutting forces for all of the gage bits were similar to those of the 60°-tip plumb-bob bit. All bits except the RAD-3 gage bit generated similar amounts of primary total dust at shallow cutting, but during deeper cutting, the amounts varied and the gage bits produced as much as 2-1/2 times the dust produced by the 60° bit. This seems atypical since past experience has always shown differences in dust generation at shallow cutting. The specific energy was more like that found previously with other bits, since the values were spread at shallow cutting but became nearly similar at deeper cuts. The 90° bit and the RAD-3 gage bit are not recommended for use except in extremely difficult cutting conditions where dust and forces are of secondary importance. The choice among the remaining four bits can be made on the basis of dust, energy, forces, or cost, as circumstances dictate.

The purposes of this Bureau of Mines report are to review the history of the domestic offshore hydrocarbon production; to project offshore oil and lease condensate production from 1971 through 1985; and to show the impact of offshore development on the onshore segment of the petroleum industry. Since 1954, offshore production has provided an increasingly larger portion of the domestic oil production. Domestic offshore oil and lease condensate production has increased from about 2.0 pct of the U.S. total in 1954 to 16.7 pct in 1970. Likewise, marketed gas production has increased from 1.0 pct of the U.S. total in 1954 to 15.0 pct in 1970. The past performance of exploration, leasing, development, and production of the offshore petroleum industry was used to make projections of offshore oil production. A comparison between onshore and offshore operations was also made. Assuming a tentative Department of the Interior offshore leasing schedule is completed by 1980, the authors estimate that by 1985, about 30 pct of domestic crude oil and lease condensate production from the lower 48 States will come from offshore areas. Currently, leasing of Federal offshore areas has been delayed due to environmental considerations. The rate at which off-shore hydrocarbons will enter the energy market will depend, to a large extent, on how soon environmental considerations are resolved. Assuming that offshore leasing will resume in the near future, U.S. offshore production of crude oil and lease condensate should be about 934 million barrels in 1985.

In Southern Africa, historic mining and mineral processing of base metal deposits have almost exclusively focussed on the extraction of major metals, leading to the loss of remaining valuable raw materials into tailings dumps and waste rock piles. At the Namib Pb–Zn mine (Erongo Region, Namibia), historic base metal tailings deposits are present as unreclaimed exposed waste piles. The tailings comprise silt- (fraction A: d50 = 25 to 48 μm) to sand-sized (fraction B: d50 = 86 to 185 μm; fraction C: d50 = 210 to 230 μm) material and contain major concentrations of base metals (Pb av. 1.15 mass%, Zn av. 3.20 mass%), S (av. 9.95 mass%), as well as lower values of other metals (Cu av. 490 μg/g, Cd av. 133 μg/g, Ag av. 22 μg/g), and critical elements like Sb (av. 14.7 μg/g) and In (14.3 μg/g). Former mineral processing only targeted the extraction of galena and sphalerite. As a consequence, qualitative mineralogical composition of the tailings is similar to that of the primary ore. Ca–Fe–Mg(–Mn) carbonates, quartz, micas, chlorite, minor graphite, magnetite, and rare parisite relate to the former host rock and gangue matrix, whereas Fe-rich sphalerite, galena, magnetite, pyrite with minor pyrrhotite, rare arsenopyrite, marcasite, cassiterite, and accessory scheelite are original constituents of the primary ore. Reprocessing of such a material would be challenging, but a mixed Pb–Zn concentrate enriched in Cd and Ag might be obtained. In future, possible reprocessing of Namib tailings and associated disposal of wastes into an appropriately designed repository would not only generate valuable metal commodities, but such activities would also eliminate a major metal pollution source from the local environment.
