MICA is a group name for a number of complex hydrous aluminum silicate minerals that have a sheet or platy structure and extremely variable and complex compositions containing various metallic ions, particularly those from the alkali group. Muscovite and phlogopite, the two varieties of significant commercial value, are the principal consideration of this report; muscovite has major importance industrially. The mica crystal, because of its laminated structure, can be split easily and accurately into thin films that are transparent, flexible, elastic, tough, and waterproof and have outstanding dielectric and insulating characteristics. This combination of properties is not duplicated in any other known substance. The world production of mica can be divided into two main classifications: (1) Sheet mica and (2) scrap mica (including flake mica). In general, separate divisions of the industry produce these two classes of mica, which differ widely in their uses and in the forms in which they are marketed. In-1992, the U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral investigation of the Anderson Mountain study area, including RARE II area 4-942, in Lemhi County, Idaho. The 7,340-ha study area lies within the Salmon National Forest about one kilometer north of the old mining town of Gibbonsville (pop.: 100). The eastern boundary of the study area is formed by the crest of the Bitterroot Range. The crest also serves as the continental Divide, and as the border between Idaho and Montana. The study area lies within the Gibbonsville Mining District, an important past producer of gold from lode and placer deposits. Since the 1870's, several hundred claims for both types have been located in the study area. Thirty-six current (1992) lode claims and two patented claim groups (one lode and one placer) are wholly or partially in the study area. No placer claims are current. In all, twenty-seven lode and five placer properties in and adjacent to the study area were investigated. Workings on the properties included 2 caved shafts; 36 caved adits; 8 open adits; 120 small pits, cuts, and trenches; and 4 large dozed cuts.

The Federal Bureau of Mines examined ilmenite-bearing sands in southern Texas as part of a program to discover sources of supply for the domestic titanium industry. Deposits were examined from May 1956 through January 1959 in the outcrops of sandstone beds in the Jackson group of Eocene formations in Lee, Burleson, Fayette, and Starr Counties on the Gulf Coastal Plain; in alluvial valley fill in Brewster County in southwest Texas; in the sand beaches of Matagorda Peninsula and the Galveston, Padre, and Brazos Islands--part of the offshore chain of barrier islands along the Texas coast; and in unconsolidated sediments in Willacy County on the Rio Grande delta in the southeast Texas.

This Information Circular describes copper mining and concentrating methods, practices, and costs at the Silver Bell Unit of American Smelting and Refining Co., Pima County, Ariz. It is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods, practices, and costs in various mining districts of the United States. The Silver Bell mining district, one of the older districts in Arizona, is in the western part of the Silver Bell Mountains in Pima County, about 40 miles west of Tucson and about 20 miles southwest of Red Rock, a station on the main line railroad of the Southern Pacific Co. The Oxide and the El Tiro open-pit mines of the American Smelting and Refining Co. are in the district (fig. 1. The principal ore deposits are in T. 12S., R.8E., Gila and Salt River base line, at an altitude of about 3,000 feet. The present town of Silver Bell, established in 1952, is reached by a paved highway, the Avra Valley road, that turns west from Highway 84 at Plata siding near Rillito and extends westward 25 miles to the townsite (fig. 2). The present town is about 5 miles southeast of the old town of Silver Bell that flourished from 1900 to 1930.

This report on the physical and chemical properties of typical crude oils of California is the 'eighth in a series on the producing districts of the United States. It includes discussion of results, tabulated data, and individual analyses of typical California crudes. Additional analyses of crude oils from the fields of Fresno, Kern, Los Angeles, Orange, end Ventura Counties will be published later in another Serial of the Bureau, but the summary tabulations are presented here. The samples represented in this report were collected over a rather wide interval of tine, the early samples having been obtained during the fall of 1919, and the most recent ones dating from the summer of 1923. It is thought that the samples are fairly representative, both of the older settled production and of the new flush production of the southern California fields.

This report is one of a series dealing with oil-shale-operations in foreign countries visited and studied by Bureau of Mines oil-shale technologists within the past 4 years. Many oil-shale deposits have been discovered in Brazil and studied with various degrees of thoroughness. In this report the major emphasis is upon the oil-shale concessions of Companhia Nacional de Oleos Mineraes, in the River Valley of the State of Sao Paulo, because this oil-shale deposit is one of the most promising in Brazil for large-scale utilization for the manufacture of liquid fuels and other products of oil-shale processing, and because the opportunity was afforded to examine the concession area and to study mining, retorting, and. refining operations on these shales. Results of detailed analyses at the Oil Shale Research and Development Laboratories of the United States Bureau of Mines, Laramie, Wyo., are reported, Analyses and other date dealing with other oil-shale deposits in Brazil have been compiled from many sources. As many data have been reported as could be correlated to indicate the range of variation of the several types of shale end similar material. The oil-shale deposits in Brazil differ widely in size, richness of the shale, and of the oil. Some deposits are situate& more favorably for exploitation than others.

I. INTRODUCTION. WHEN so much has been written upon a subject on which so little definite information is available as upon this, some reason must needs be assigned for adding to the volume of literature. A sufficient reason is found in the probable great future importance of China as a producer of mineral wealth. The present undeveloped state of mining in the Empire is due to many causes, among which the most important are the relatively simple needs of the population, the lack of transportation-facilities, the inelastic regulations governing the industry, and the superstitious reluctance of the people to make excavations which might disturb the spirits of the earth and air, or of ancestors. Iron is the metal most in demand, yet the needs of the population, until recently, only made necessary a production of approximately 0.5 lb. of iron per capita per year. The present annual production of iron for domestic consumption, in the United States, is nearly 600 lb. per capita. The curious state of development of transportation in this interesting country has been a greater handicap upon the mining industry than upon any other. The point upon which it hinges is the absence of a road-system. Except for a few military roads, now almost impassable, there are no roads in China; that is to say, there is no land which is set aside as a right of way, belonging to the commonwealth. Throughout the agricultural districts, generally speaking, the entire area is in private ownership, and the lines of travel are between fields. This report on the properties of commercial motor fuels sold in the United States is a continuation of a series of reports made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Cooperative Fuel Research (C.F.R.) Committee of the Cooperative Research Council (C.R.C. ) and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior . The first report contained data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-364 . Further reports on motor gasolines sold during the succeeding summers and winters to the summer of 1941 have been issued . No reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1941-42 and during the summer of 1942 . The present report presents analytical data for 1,120 samples , representing the products of approximately 88 companies . As in previous surveys , these companies include both large and small suppliers . In addition, the Pacific coast is represented by data averaged by the Pacific Coast Technical Group before being submitted and are published exactly as they were received . Conforming to previous surveys , the data cover three groups of samplesregular - price , premium - price , and third - grade gasolines and each group has been averaged separately. The number of samples , items and brands comprising each group, exclusive of those of the Pacific coast, are as follows : Regular price , 641 samples , 250 items , and 64 brands ; premium price , 439 samples , 222 items , and 68 brands ; third - grade gasoline , 50 samples , 50 items and 19 brands .

There are 14 operations that supply 97% of the Market Economy Country (MEC) manganese and contain nearly all of its resources. Six mines account for about 70% of the production and 85% of the resources; there are no known resources that are economically close to those that are currently being mined. Costs (January 1989 dollars) of producing manganese concentrates from the operations evaluated are estimated to range from $ 0.96 to $ 1.86 per long ton unit (ltu or 22.4 lb) of contained manganese. Total MEC demonstrated resources evaluated amount to about 1.2 billion tons of in situ ore containing 474 million tons of manganese. Identified resources amount to about 1.8 billion tons of in situ material. Key results of the study indicate the following: 1. The MEC supply of manganese will be from the currently mined resources well into the next century. 2. Centrally Planned Economy Countries (CPEC's) will be increasingly dependent on MEC manganese ore and concentrate in the future. 3. At the 1976 to 1987 demand increase rate, total MEC resource needed through the year 2000 would be about 282 million tons of in situ material. 4. Transportation and infrastructure support will continue to be major elements of production costs.

In this report, the application of the PHU/MVS program is demonstrated through the use of a simple but realistic mine ventilation program. The report details, the problem description, the input data required and the various output features of the simulator. The PSU/MVS program is written in Fortran IV for use with IBM 370/168 computers. A version of the program that can be used in CDC computers is also available. A ventilation network consisting of 531 branches, 300 nodes and 5 fans took 48 seconds for solution on The Pennsylvania State University's IBM 370/168 computer. Appendix I of this report is the User?s Manual for the program. Appendices II and III contain the input data listing, and selected output listing for; the application. Appendix IV provides tables for leakage, friction factors and shape factors.

The study of minero-petrographical characteristics and the subsequent textural and structural characterization of an ore mineral represents the first step of each industrial processing whose aim is the beneficiation of each valuable mineral phase present inside the ore. Analytical, mineralogical and petrographical, chemical and multispectral image analyses based investigations, applied to eclogitic ore samples deriving form "in situ" sampling campaigns, were applied. These procedures enabled to point out some textural and structural aspects characteristics of ore litotypes belonging to eclogitic-amphibolitic dikes. Such dikes are characterized by a paragenesis constituted mainly by siliceous gangue and accessory "useful titanium minerals" as rutile [TiO2], "pseudolilmenite", ilmenite [FeTiO3] and sphene [CaTiSiO5]. In the beneficiation process applied to ore s is of preliminary importance to establish a strategy in order to obtain a recovery of high quality "mono-minerals concentrates" as rutile, "pseudolimenite", ilmenite and phene. To reach this goal is thus necessary to develop a preliminary study of the textural, structural, petrochemical and minerochemical characteristics of the samples. Different ore samples (eclogitic rocks), resulting from sampling campaigns carried out in the Piampaludo area (Sassello district: Savona, Northern Italy), are examined.

The productive capacity of natural-gasoline and cycling plants in the United States on January 1, 1958, was 48.8 million gallons per day, according to the Bureau of Mines biennial survey. This represented an increase of 2.4 million gallons per day during the 2-year period since the last survey. In the previous 2-year period, capacity had increased 7.5 million gallons per day. The major increase in operating capacity occurred in Texas and New Mexico. In New Mexico, capacity increased 43 percent. The total number of plants decreased from 600 on January 1, 1956, to 584 on January 1, 1958. The number of operating plants decreased from 571 to 558. Five new plants were completed in Colorado, increasing the number of operating plants from 7 to 12.

Studies on the initiation and propagation of mine fires have dealt almost exclusively with coal. It has been assumed that the self-heating potential of carbonaceous shales and coal wastes is relatively low. However, in abandoned coal mines and waste banks, initiation and propagation of fires may be strongly dependent on the self-heating tendency of these materials. The purpose of this study was to compare the self-heating probability of carbonaceous shales and coal wastes to that of coals. This study utilized a modified differential thermal analysis method, in which the combustion furnace temperature was the reference to which the sample temperature was compared. Based on the distribution of the maximum temperature differential and the sample heating rate, a self-heating probability value (SHPV) was calculated that corresponded to observed self-heating behavior. In this study, several of the carbonaceous shales and one coal waste had relatively high SHPV. The SHPV did not correspond directly to heating values or to differences in sulfur concentration.

It is possible to purify some liquid metals by exploiting the difference between the vapour pressure of the bulk metal and the minor constituents or impurities. The rates of purification can be improved by carrying out the process under reduced pressure, that is, so called, vacuum. Some commercial examples of vacuum refining are the purification of molten tin to eliminate trace amounts of lead and the refining of cobalt, also to remove lead. The objective of this paper is to review the basic theory behind vacuum refining technology in order to show how the feasibility of vacuum refining can be determined simply for a particular system by evaluating Olette's Volatility Refining Criteriont.

The Bureau of Mines has written a computer program in FORTRAN to facilitate the calculation of concentrations from X-ray intensities in electron probe microanalysis. Philibert's absorption and Castaing's secondary fluorescence corrections are used; no atomic number correction is included. Background and dead time corrections are applied to the data before calculating the relative intensities. Data from any type of electron probe microanalyzer can be used with the program.

Chromite deposits in the vicinity of Louise, Troup County, Ga., were studied y the Bureau of Mines from September 1, 1942, to March, 15, 1943. They are about three-fourths of a mile southeast of Louise and 8 miles northeast of La Grange, Troup County, Ga. The existence of chromite deposits in that area has been known for more than 75 years, but no active prospecting was done until World War I. Prospecting continued intermittently' until 1928. The Bureau became interested in the deposits in connection with its strategic minerals investigations during World War II. The chromite in these deposits occurs as grains ranging from "pin-head" size to 3/8-inch and occasionally 1 inch. Some of the material is magnetic, indicating the presence of magnetite. Of the 300 samples taken during the course of the project, 266 were analyzed. Tables showing the analyses accompany this report.

From 1953 to 1960, the quantity of the aggregates used in concrete block, precast and prestressed concrete, and monolithic structures increased about 92 percent. The present study was conducted in Bureau of Mines Area IV which encompasses the South-Central States of Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Texas. This is an administrative area and does not delimit a market area or imply an economic unit. Because of the increasing importance of metropolitan areas in evaluating economic growth, significant data showing relationships between growth of the metropolitan areas and the lightweight aggregate industry are included.

On July 1, the Bonneville Power Administration announced a 25% power cutback because of lower than normal stream flow. In September, the Aluminum Company of America (Alcoa) announced plans to shut down one 23,000-ton-per-year potline at its Vancouver, Wash., primary aluminum smelter. Alcoa also announced that the last of four potlines at its Point Comfort, Tex., primary aluminum smelter would be restarted in October. A new 3-year contract was signed and workers at three Alcan Aluminum Ltd. primary aluminum smelters in Canada returned to work. It was estimated that it would take about 3 months before the smelters were operating at full capacity.
