"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Not only do epithermal gold deposits provide many challenges in estimating mineral resources, the complexities of these deposits also provide technical challenges in assessing appropriate mining and processing strategies, as well as social and environmental planning and management. The characteristics of epithermal gold deposits include being highly variable with respect to geometry and gold grade distribution, the presence of other economic contributors, mineralogy, texture, rock strength, weathering and alteration overprint. These characteristics influence the economic value of mining projects in an interlinked manner. Consequently, successful exploitation of epithermal deposits requires a holistic approach, coupled with the effective integration of geological data to meet all aspects of mine development decision-making. This paper presents examples of the key technical challenges encountered in estimating and mining epithermal deposits. "INTRODUCTION During the early 1920's world-wide attention was attracted to a group of oil fields (Mexia, Wortham, Currie, Richard, and Powell) later known as Mexia-Powell fault-line fields in Limestone, Freestonne, and Navarro Counties, Tex. Enormous yields of high-gravity oil from the wells in these fields resulted in drilling campaigns that quickly surpassed all previous records for rapid, intensive development of productive areas. The discovery of oil in the Mexia filed in September 1921 was followed quickly by the finding of oil in the Currie field in October. In January 1923 oil was discovered in the Powell field; in February 1924 the Richland field, midway between Currie and Powell fields, was brought in; and in November 1924 oil was discovered in the Wortham field, situated between Mexia and Currie fields. Each of the fileds was developed rapidly: wells were spaced closely and had high initial production; production peaks were reached early in the producing lives of the fields; subsequent decline was rapid, and there was early and rapid encroachment of edge water.In 1927 Bureau of Mines engineers, in their investigations a engineering conditions in oil,completed a preliminary study and published a mimeographed report 4/ on underground conditions in the Wortham field, and in 1928 they reported on production and development problems in the Powell Field. 5/ field."

Many large caverns are being constructed in great depths in Korea mainly for the storage of oil and LPG. These caverns are mostly located near the port where rock conditions are reasonably good. In some instances, the horizontal stress is very high and endangers the stability of the cavern. The purpose of this study is to assess the stability of large caverns excavated in a rock mass with high horizontal stress where Ko value is close to 3. Result shows that stress exerted in the shotcrete at crown exceeds allowable value when the 3rd bench is excavated. Also found is the tensile failure of shotcrete near the boundaries between benches. In Korea werden viele grosse Kaverne fuer Aufbewahrung vom Oel und Fluessiggas in grosser Tiefe gebaut. Am Meisten befinden sich diese Kaverne in der Naehe von Haefen, wo der Fels gute Verhaeltnisse zum Bauen einer Kaverne besitzt. In einigen Faellen ist die Horizontalspannung sehr gross und dadurch wird die Stabilitaet vom Kaverne gefaerdet. Der Zweck dieser Arbeit ist die Stabilitaet des im Fels gebauten grossen Kavernes mit hoher Horiaontalspannung zu schuetzen, wo Ko-Wert sich auf 3 naehrt. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die Spannung im Spritzbeton an der Krone den zulaessigen Wert ueberschreitet, wenn das dritte Bank ausgegraben wird. Im Bereich des Spritzbetons zwischen Baenke wurde das Zugversagen festgestellt. Des larges cavités nombreuses sont en train d’être construites en grand profondeur en Corée prin-cipalement pour le stocage du pétrole et LPG. Ces cavités sont pour la plupart situées près de la porte oú les conditions des roches sont résonablement bons. En quelques cas, la contrainte hori-zontale est trés haute et met en danger la stabilité de la cavité. L’objet de cet étude est d’estimer la stabilité des large cavités excavées dans une masse de roche ayant une haute contrainte horizontale oú la valeur de Ko est proche à 3. Le résultat montre que la contrainte exercée dans le shotcrete à la couronne dépasse la valeur admissible quand le troisième banc est excavé. En plus une faillite en tension du shotcrete près de la frontière entre des bancs est trouvée.

In recent years, west-central Arizona and adjacent California have become the focus of geologic and exploration attention because of its excellent exposure of detachment-fault terrane. Detachment faults, normal faults with nearly horizontal fault planes, are the result of regional extension. Rocks on the lower plate consist of mylonitized intrusive, metasedimentary and crystalline rocks highly altered to chlorite; upper plate rocks comprise sedimentary, volcanic, metasedimentary, and metavolcanic rocks. The movement of the detachment fault causes the rocks on the upper plate to be severely fractured and brecciated thus making them Ideal conduits for mineralizing fluids. Mineralization favored the more reactive sedimentary and volcanic rocks of the upper plate. Three gold deposits, located in upper plate rocks, are currently being mined along the Colorado River corridor: the Picacho Mine near Yuma, Arizona, 70 mi south of the study area; the American Girl Mine In southeastern California, 60 mi southwest; and the Copperstone Mine near the southern end of this study area. Samples from the above three mines were used to create a geochemical model of detachment-related gold deposits. Antimony, arsenic, barium, copper, mercury, molybdenum, manganese, tungsten, and zinc all occur In the mine samples in concentrations at least three times greater than found elsewhere in similar rock types. Samples taken by the Bureau from the wilderness study areas contain similar anomalous concentrations of the same elements as well as elevated concentrations of several other elements Including: lead, fluorine, cerium, uranium, and samarium.

This work was done to determine the technical feasibility of using the Pedersen process to produce cell-grade alumina and an iron byproduct from the high-silica and titania bauxites of the Pacific Northwest. Smelting of these bauxites with lime and coke at about 1,750° C in an electric arc furnace produced calcium aluminate slags in which at least 80 percent of the alumina was leachable by sodium carbonate solution. After a lime-desilication of the sodium aluminate leach liquors, neutralization of these solutions with carbon dioxide resulted in precipitation of an alumina hydrate of sufficient purity for calcination to cell-grade alumina. Recoveries of byproduct iron averaged over 90 percent; however, the iron contained about 1 percent phosphorous and would require additional refining. Additional small scale tests on these slags showed the following: (1) Titania had little effect on leachability if sufficient additional lime was added to form calcium titanate (CaO.TiO 2); (2) a slag containing about 14 percent silica required a slower cooling rate than one containing 7 percent silica for formation of high percentages of soluble aluminates; and (3) high-silica slags leached better at room temperature for long periods than at 65° C for shorter periods, but low-silica slags leached well by either method.

Before Korea was partitioned along the 38th parallel following World War II, the coal fields of South Korea, with the possible exception of the Samchok area, were not considered important to the industrial needs or Japan or Korea. Much of the demand for electric power in South Korea was met by hydroelectric installations north of the 38th parallel. Following cessation of hostilities between Japan and the' Allied nations in 1945, hydroelectric power continued to flow into South Korea from the north until 1949, when the North Koreans severed the power lines into South Korea, thereby forcing that section of the country to depend almost entirely upon coal to generate electric power.

An empirical method, based on U. S. Bureau of Mines field studies in several Western U.S. coal mines, is presented for sizing gate road yield pillars. Discriminant analysis was used to generate functions separating successful from unsuccessful case studies. These functions relate the pillar width-height and extraction ratios and a pillar development factor to the Coal Mine Roof Rating System (CMRR), and are assumed to establish three criteria that other entry systems, under similar conditions, must satisfy. A program, Pillar Sizer, from user-provided inputs, generates a range of pillar sizes that meets the proposed criteria. Although the analysis is based on a sample consisting primarily of two-entry systems, the derived expressions generate pillar sizes closely agreeing with observed, two-entry and three-entry in situ pillars. It is concluded that the proposed approach should assist mine operators estimate entry system yield pillar dimensions.

In response to increased aluminum demand, U.S. producers have begun reactivating primary aluminum capacity which was shutdown during the 1974-1975 recession. Reynolds Metals Company started up almost 80,000 tons per year of idled capacity at Listerhill, Alabama, and Jones Mills and Arkadelphia, Arkansas plants. Howmet Aluminum Corporation and Alumax announced that the operating rate at their jointly owned facility at Frederick, Maryland was being increased from 75 percent to 100 percent, equivalent to a 44,000 ton-per-year increase in output. Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corp. expected to restart one of the two idled potlines at its Mead, Washington facility in May raising its production rate by 27,000 tons per year. ANTHRACITE - The anthracite market for the larger sizes continues at a good level, and although the demand for industrial sizes has been weak, the current trend indicates an increased demand for industrial fines by the steel, auto, and other industries.

Low-carbon shales from 65 deposits and 11 sources of coal-mine waste in western Oregon and Washington were tested in a rotary kiln for their suitability as raw material for expanded aggregate. Shales from 41 sources bloated enough to produce crushed, expanded aggregates, weighing less than 65 pounds per cubic foot in the preliminary tests. The samples were judged on the basis of processing qualities, physical properties, and size and uniformity of the source. Nine low-carbon shale deposits and three coal-mine waste sources were selected for more extensive bloating tests and for examination of the expanded aggregates in concrete shapes. Composite samples from these 12 sources and from 2 commercial operations, when processed for testing in concrete shapes, had bulk densities ranging from 37.S to 72.9 pounds per cubic foot. Damp-cured concrete shapes made with these aggregates had bulk densities ranging from S6 to 119 pounds per cubic foot, and all but three of the lightweight concretes had crushing strengths ranging from 3,270 to 6,810 p.s.i. Properties of the lightweight concretes were compared with those of concrete shapes made with commercial aggregates, and with sand and gravel.

THIS BULLETIN analyzes and summarizes research at the Bureau of Mines dealing with the preparation, properties, and reactions of iron carbides in the period 1948-60, part of which was sponsored by Wright Air Development Laboratories. The objective was to develop better catalysts for the synthesis of methane and higher hydrocarbons from hydrogen and carbon monoxide. The investigations resulted in the first adequate characterization of epsilon iron carbide, which later proved to be an important intermediate in the tempering of martensite in steel. At temperatures near 170° C, the carbon in carbon monoxide reacts nearly quantitatively with finely divided alpha iron to form an iron carbide in which the metal atoms occupy the positions of the close packed hexagonal arrangement with lattice parameters of ao=2.754 A and co=4.349 A. The carbide has a composition within 2 atomic percent of that required for the formula Fe2C, a Curie point of about 370° C, a specific magnetization of 160.4 ergs per gauss-gram Fe at 50° C, and a ferromagnetic moment of 1.70 Bohr magnetons. Epsilon iron carbide can be converted to chi iron carbide by thermal treatment at 343° C for about 70 hours. The chi iron carbide so formed has a Curie point of 247° C, a specific magnetization of 142.5 ergs per gauss-gram Fe at 50° C, a ferromagnetic moment of 1.72 Bohr magnetons per iron atom, and a paramagnetic moment of 5.5 Bohr rnagnetons per iron atom. Direct synthesis of this carbide from carbon monoxide at 240° C indicates a composition within 7 atomic percent of that required for Fe2C. Chi iron carbide can be converted to cementite at 550° C in about 315 minutes. The theta iron carbide so prepared has a Curie point of 210° C, a specific magnetization of 147.3 ergs per gauss gram Fe at 50° C, a ferromagnetic moment of 1.72 Bohr magnetons per iron atom, and a paramagnetic moment of 3.9 Bohr magnetons per iron atom. Pure chi iron carbide reacts to form theta iron carbide by the elimination of free carbon. In the presence of an excess of free iron in intimate contact with the carbide, chi iron carbide reacts with the free iron to form theta iron carbide. The second reaction proceeds at an appreciable rate at 320° C and can be used to snythesize finely divided theta iron carbide with no free-carbon impurity at low temperatures. The ease of the reaction in the presence of free iron suggests that chi iron carbide is an intermediate in the tempering of epsilon iron carbide to theta iron carbide as it proceeds in steels. Experiments on carbon steel show that the magnetic moment of the iron atoms in martensite is about 2.2 Bohr magnetons per atom, a value approximately the same as that of the iron atoms in alpha iron. The Curie points of epsilon iron carbide, chi iron carbide, and theta iron carbide were found -in various specimens of tempered steel to be 10° to 20° C lower than normal values. This shift is probably the result of manganese in solid solution. Preparations of various compositions of epsilon iron carbonitrides show many effects of extensive isomorphism between epsilon iron carbide and epsilon iron nitride. The action of carbon monoxide on finely divided alpha iron at 400° C results in free carbon deposits containing filaments about 0.1 micron in diameter and several times as long. The filaments are characterized by nuclei of dense material located midway from each end of the filament. Although carbiding to near completion at 240° C over periods of about 300 hours produces a preparation containing no appreciable percentage of epsilon iron carbide, very brief periods of carbiding of the order of a minute result in the formation of detectable epsilon iron carbide even at temperatures as high as 325° C. The data indicate that epsilon iron carbide is an intermediate in the formation of chi iron carbide during its formation from carbon monoxide in the gas phase. Attempts to convert cementite to chi iron carbide by cold work increased the Curie point but did not change the X-ray powder diffraction pattern.

Empirical equations established for estimating the rock strength of the working face based on the cutting forces of a tunnel boring machines (TBM) are further examined and discussed with respect to the dominant factors affecting TBM performance. Constants in the equations are related to TBM-specific parameters such as excavation (tunnel) diameter, cutter diameter, and cutter distance. The relationship between the constants and the TBM specifications is examined in this study on the basis of data collected at ten tunnels, and it is found that the constants are most strongly influenced by the cutter diameter and tunnel diameter. Zur Schätzung der Gesteinsfestigkeit an der Arbeitsfläche ermittelte empirische Gleichungen, die auf den Schneidekräften von Tunnelbohrmaschinen (TBM) beruhen, wurden weiter im Hinblick auf die vorherrschenden, die Leistung der TBM beeinflussenden Faktoren hin untersucht und diskutiert. In der Gleichung enthaltene Konstanten werden zu den TBM-spezifischen Parametern wie Auschachtungs- (Tunnel) Durchmesser, Schneidendurchmesser und Schachtlänge in Beziehung gesetzt. Die Beziehung zwischen diesen Konstanten und den technischen Daten der TBM wird in dieser Studie auf der Basis der bei 10 Tunnelbauten gesammelten Daten untersucht. Dabei wurde gefunden, dass diese Konstanten am stärksten von den Durchmessern der Schneiden und der Tunnel beeinflusst werden. Cette étude examine et discute les équations empiriques permettant d'estimer la résistance de la roche attaquée aux forces de coupe des tunneliers dans le cadre de l'étude des facteurs dominants affectant les performances des tunneliers. Les constantes de ces équations concernent les paramètres spécifiques des tunneliers comme le diamètre d'excavation (du tunnel), le diamètre du couteau et la distance de coupe. (Measurements of stable isotopic variations (sulfur, carbon, and oxygen), supplemented by chemical, mineralogical, and petrographic analyses have been used to investigate the processes responsible for : (1) the incorporation of sulfur in coal, and (2) the (development of permineralized peat zones ("coal balls"). Sulfur isotopic results indicate that there are two principal sources of sulfur in the Pennsylvanian coals from the Illinois Basin: (1) "primary" sulfur assimilated by plants (low-sulfur coals), and (2) "secondary" sulfur produced by reactions involving H2S that was produced by the anaerobic reduction of sulfate in seawater which permeated the peat during post-depositional marine transgressions (the dominant source of sulfur in high-sulfur coals). Sulfur isotopic compositions of low-sulfur coals in Several Tertiary basins of Wyoming are consistent with a plant sulfur source. However, the inverse correlation between content and isotopic composition of sulfur observed in coals from the Powder River Basin suggest some "secondary" additions to these low-sulfur coals. Seveeral Quaternary (freshwater pears which were submerged by sea-Level rises during deglaciation over the past 30 ka have sulfur contents and isotopic compositions similar to high-sulfur coals. Carbon and oxygen isotopic compositions of calcareous coal balls from North America and Europe suggest that (1) the carbonate was derived from variable proportions of oxidized plant matter (typically predominant) and inorganic carbonate, and (2) the carbonate minerals were precipitated from fresh-to-brackish waters. Local geochemical and hydrological conditions were apparently more important than regional depositional environments in controlling the source of carbonate and the development of coal balls.

The diffusion of such knowledge in the field of sampling metallic metallurgical materials appears to have been quite insufficient, and it is felt that when the principles involved are once thoroughly comprehended their universal application will be appreciated, so that it will make no difference whether pig iron or gold bullion is offered for test. It may further be noted that a discussion of the theories underlying practical methods is placed under the caption "Practical Sampling," with the idea that no one can be a practical sampler unless he is capable of analyzing his methods. No attempt has been made to advocate any one method, but it is hoped that the analyses of all of the methods in use will show where each may be correctly and safely applied. The fact that it is possible to demonstrate the theoretical correctness of several methods indicates the invalidity of the claim that any single one of them is the standard.

Although phosphorus is a very important biogenic element, its concentration in coal is generally low. Phosphorus concentrations typically range from 0.001 % to 0.229% in raw coals of the contiguous 48 states. Some Alaskan coals in the Cook Inlet region contain horizons unusually high in phosphorus. A foot by foot analysis of deep drill core, containing 70 ft. of sub bituminous 'C' coal from the Beluga coal field, Alaska, showed certain increments contained as high as 17.03% P2O5 in the coal ash; 1.01 % P on a moisture-free coal basis. Crandallite has been identified by electron microprobe analyses as a phosphorus numeral in these coals. The authors could quantify calcium, barium, strontium and phosphorus concentrations from the coal attributable to crandallite. These high phosphorus coals provided a unique opportunity to study the association of phosphorus in coals using chemical fractionation for exchangeable cations and acid extractable elements. Since the source of high phosphorous horizons in Cook Inlet coals is attributed to volcanic ash, it is suggested that the profiles of acid extractable phosphorous concentration may be useful for coal seam correlations.

Domestic production of Metallurgical-grade manganese has contributed such a small percentage of the United States industrial demands that areas known to contain large tonnages of low-grade manganese ore have been investigated by the Bureau of Mines to reduce this country's dependence on foreign ores. A major source of low-grade manganese is the Cuyuna iron range in Minnesota. The entire Cuyuna iron range is covered by an overburden of glacial drift that, in some places, reaches depths of 200 feet or more. Prospecting and exploration must be guided by geophysical methods, drilling results, or projections of exposures found in operating mines because there are no outcrops near the productive parts of the range. Past drilling for the purpose of outlining iron ore generally was confined to the highly oxidized zones. Much of the manganese with which the Bureau of Mines is concerned occurs in thin-bedded unoxidized iron formations, too low in iron content to have been of interest to those seeking commercial iron ore. The primary objective of the core-drilling reported here was to obtain cores of different classes of manganiferous rocks and to determine whether or not the samples were amenable to beneficiation.

The use of explosives to fragment rock generates ground vibrations which may have a detrimental effect on contiguous underground coal mine openings. Increased surface blasting by a burgeoning number of surface coal mines and quarries has caused considerable concern among underground mine operators. Ground vibration effects generated from surface mine blasting are also causing public concern. In response to this concern, the U.S. Bureau of Mines (Stagg and Engler, 1980) has measured and analyzed ground vibrations and their effects on underground and surface structures. Some of the complaints registered against the mining industry are claims of substantial material damage from vibrations generated by the blasting; others are nuisance complaints of minor damage or annoyance. In general, allegations of damage from surface blasting have been sufficiently numerous to constitute a major problem for mine operators engaged in blasting operations. They have recognized the need for more technological data to evaluate the vibration problems associated with blasting. Both the operators and the general public need adequate safeguards based upon factual data to protect their specific interests. The coal mine industry needs reliable information from which to change blasting operations to reduce the number and severity of major damage claims and eliminate the growing number of nuisance complaints. The problem is of major concern not only to coal mine operators and nearby property owners, but also to federal, state and local governments. At the same time, environmental control agencies responsible for blasting and explosives use require reasonable and appropriate guidelines to protect the miners' lives.

Arrium (previously OneSteel) initiated a desktop study into the performance of its hematite ore beneficiation plant in early 2010. The beneficiation plant utilises jig concentrators and spirals to upgrade low-grade hematite recovered during mining at the Iron Duke (ID) mine site located 60 km south-west of Whyalla. The study, conducted in conjunction with Mineral Technologies, identified a number of opportunities for improvement, which were validated by a series of sampling campaigns and a pilot plant trial. One of the major recommendations was to upgrade the ultra-fines processing circuit from a single-stage spiral circuit to a three-stage circuit. The upgrade of the ultra-fines circuit was estimated to provide a significant increase in fines production and grade.In order to capitalise on the strong iron price at the time of the project, Arrium decided to utilise a fast-tracked approach to design, construct and commission the processing equipment required to achieve the improvements identified. This decision introduced the risk of missing critical steps in the project development process, which could have potentially resulted in major issues in latter stages of the project. In addition to the challenges introduced due to the expedited time line for project completion, this project presented unique challenges due to its brownfield nature. One such challenge faced was the integration of the new equipment and control system software.Furthermore, the importance of the ID ore beneficiation plant (OBP) contribution to the companyÆs export commitments meant the upgrade work had to occur while minimising disruption to normal operation. This decision presented a set of new challenges to an already complex project. One such challenge was the need to build and commission the new spiral circuit in isolation from the operating plant.The aim of this paper will be to highlight some of the challenges faced in a complex brownfield project such as the ID OBP upgrade and discuss how they were managed to enable the successful commissioning of the process in early 2012.CITATION:Selvapandian E and Barr, R, 2013.
