The Bureau of Mines has investigated podiform chromite deposits in three ultramafic bodies in the Caribou Mountain and lower Kanuti River areas of central Alaska. The investigation, reported in two parts, was done as part of the Bureau's mission to help insure an adequate supply of minerals to meet the Nation's needs. Part I describes an extensive field investigation and mineralogical studies by personnel from the Bureau's Alaska Field Operations Center. This report, part II, describes the mineralogy of 11 samples that were high-graded from surface exposures at 10 sites and presents the results of laboratory batch beneficiation tests designed to concentrate the chromite. The 11 samples, peridotites and chromitites that consisted of variable amounts of chromite or chromium-bearing spinets, olivine, and serpentine, were beneficiated by grinding and sizing, gravity concentration, and electrodynamic separation. Three high-chromium chromite concentrates, two high-iron chromite concentrates, and one high-aluminum chromite concentrate were produced. Three other concentrates were marginal, and two were submarginal. Chromium recoveries ranged from 54 to 92 pct. These results indicate that the areas may be significant chromium resources. Potential platinum association with the chromite was also investigated. Analysis of these 11 samples indicates that the areas are not good platinum resources.

1. The investigation shows that the Coal Creek has been the most productive, bed in Campbell County and contains the largest recoverable reserves of coal. The Pewee, Red Ash, and Jullico have been relatively productive beds and contain appreciable recoverable reserves of coal. The Blue Gem also has been productive in the past, but available information indicates that most of the remaining coal is Less than 28 inches thick. The Big Mary has relatively large reserves over 28 inches thick, but the coal is high in ash and sulfur. Thick partings in the Windrock bed have discouraged mining in that bed. The Poplar Creek and Rex beds generally are below drainage, and large areas have been excluded from the reserve estimate, Reserves in the Walnut Mountain bed will be difficult to mine due to the irregu¬lar thickness and lack of continuity of the bed. Estimated coal reserves are- small in the remaining five beds. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves of coal, based on a minimum bed thickness of 14 inches and on 1,800 short tons per acre-Foot of coal in place, are estimated to be 398 million tons as of January 1, 1953, o? this total, 267 million tons is in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager to make an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, these should be added to the total estimated reserves.

The purpose of the study is to investigate the effects of fracture filling and associated alteration on the mechanical behavior of rocks. Results are presented for specimens from the Climax and Henderson mines in Colorado and the San Manuel mine in Arizona. The rock types studied from each location are from 1) Climax, medium-grained - granite, fine-grained granite, granite porphyry, schist, and gneiss; 2. Henderson, rhyolite porphyry; 3. San Manuel, quartz monzonite and quartz monzonite porphyry. A description of the rocks was made including: color, texture, mineral composition, composition and fabric of fracture fillings, density and porosity. Unconfined and triaxial compression tests were run on the Climax and San Manuel specimens. Sonic relocities were measured during the compression tests; Shore sceleroscope hardness was measured before the compression tests. Tentative conclusions are that some relation appears to exist between compressive strength and the following properties and features for all the specimens: dynamic Young's modulus, sonic velocity, density, rock composition, and composition and fabric of fracture fillings - veinlets. There appears to be some relation between compressive strength and Shore scleroscope hardness and porosity for quartz monzonite (San Manuel). A relation appears to exist between compressive strength and texture for schist and between com¬pressive strength and extent of failure on fracture fillings for fine-grained granite, schist, and gneiss (Climax). We plan to perform additional analyses of data collected so far and data yet to be collected in the next few months, with emphasis placed on devising a practical index of alter¬ation that can be used in the field. Limitations on interpretations arise from such factors as heterogeneity of the rocks studied, the small range of confining pressures used, and other factors presented in the text.

"Column flotation has been successfully applied to iron ore concentration since the 1980s with the goal of reducing silica content and allowing for the efficient production of pellet feed. Since then, columns have been widely used in iron ore processing due to: their lower capital and operational costs when compared to conventional cells their ability to generate higher concentrate grades and recoveries.Currently, more than 100 columns have been installed within Brazilian iron ore processing circuits for rougher, cleaner and scavenger duties. Despite it being a well-established approach, several technological advances have improved column design, accessories and performance. The use of Diesel fuel continues to increase. In the United States during 1951 over 120,000,000 barrels of Diesel fuel oil were sold. The railroads used approximately 43.5 percent of this volume; industries such as smelters, mines, and manufacturing plants used about 12 percent; trucks, busses, tractors and bulldozers 20 percent; water craft 14.5 percent; and the remaining 10 percent was consumed by gas and electric utilities, the military forces, and oil companies. These figures were calculated from data issued by the Bureau of Mines. 2/ Complete data for 1952 are not yet available, but it is known that by December 1952 over 13 3/4 million barrels of Diesel fuel per month were produced by the country's refineries and by April 1953 the monthly production had increased to 1 4,333,000 barrels.3/ Information on the properties of this type of engine fuel is very important to the petroleum industry, engine manufacturers, and consumers. To supply this information the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, under cooperative agreement, are conducting annual surveys of Diesel fuel oil produced in refineries in this country.

"As part of a Nation-wide program of the United States Government to develop natural resources, funds were made available to the Bureau of Mines for the investigation of the ""Reduction of Iron Ores by Solid and Gaseous Fuels."" These investigations are concerned with the direct production of iron from its ores without the use of a blast furnace. Many processes have been proposed for the low-temperature reduction of iron oxides, but few have been developed to commercial use. High-quality sponge iron is produced com-mercially only in Sweden.The cost of iron production depends in part on the grade of the ore and increases with decrease in grade. The substitution of cheap natural gas in a sponge-iron process for expensive coke in smelting in the blast fry pace would partly compensate for the use of low-grade ores. If a process can be developed in which inexpensive natural gas can be used as fuel and reducing agent, the large deposits of low-grade iron ore and the natural-gas resources of east Texas may be utilized in the commercial production of sponge iron.Sponge iron may possibly be used to supplement scrap iron, pig iron, or, in special instances, wrought iron. Sponge iron will vary but slightly in composition and will contain little or no nickel, cobalt, manganese, copper, and other allowying metals. It is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain choice scrap iron of nonalloy composition. Pig iron contains 1.5 to 3.0 percent silicon and 3.0 to 4.5 percent carbon. Sponge iron generally contains less carbon than pig iron.The Madaras Steel Corp. in Longview, Tex., built a set commercial-scale sponge-iron plant which was intended to be operated in connection with a steel foundry. The process is based upon the reduction of preheated iron ore, with hot reducing gases under pulsating pressure. Although the Madaras Corp. had previously experimented with the production of sponge iron by reducing the ore with pure hydrogen, several attempts to use a re-formed natural gas as the reducing agent in this pilot plant were unsuccessful. The Bureau of Mines leased this plant and conducted an extensive investigation of the Madaras process on a semicommercial scale.The experiments were not entirely satisfactory, partly because of mechanical difficulties and partly because the reducing gas was not of the best quality. However, much information on the production of reducing gas by re-forming natural gas and on the reduction of iron ore with re-formed natural gas was obtained.The sponge iron produced contained approximately 0.1 percent phosphorus; and, after melting in an electric furnace, the iron contained approximately 0.15 percent phosphorus. The results of attempts to improve the ore by ore-dressing methods were not encouraging."

The planning of experiments and the importance of statistical interpretation of the results have been recognized for years by scientists and engineers. The Factorial Design of experiments is among the various methods used for this purpose and is being widely applied in all branches of research and production. The basic principles of this tool have been described in detail (1, 2, 3, 4) and several examples of its application in various fields have been published (5). In recent years the mineral industry has also used Factorial Design to improve the efficiency of research, testwork and plant operation (6, 7, 8, 9). This method permits for a qualitative determination of the influence of the variables studied in a process and also a qualitative measure of the interaction of the variables. By graphic means or derivative methods, one may also establish the optimum conditions of the process (ibid 7, 8, 9). It is desirable, however, to develop mathematical methods to evaluate quantitatively these effects and restrict the optimization to the practical limitations of the variables. It is also convenient to adopt a notation system to generalize the Factorial Design.

Frequently materials handling operations are compromised by transfer chute problems ranging from high wear rates, blockages and ineffective loading of the downstream conveyor. This paper will present the design flow implemented to overcome problems in two case studies utilising discrete element modelling incorporating material characterisation.Material testing is relevant in achieving a valid discrete element method (DEM) simulation model and subsequently a valuable design tool for transfer chute assessment and design. It is well recognised that in the current growth and demand for mineral resources, leading to ever increasing conveyor capacities associated with export terminals and mineral processing facilities that transfer chutes are a key focus point. The successful performance of the transfer chute is also dependent on operating with a ærobust rangeÆ of material flowability and handling characteristics. This requirement is crucial in accommodating mineral ores from developing resources, which are often more friable and stickier than in past decades.This paper will include details of chute installations associated with iron ore and coking coal, from the DEM simulations through to the performance of the installed and commissioned plant.CITATION:Moore, B A, van der Merwe, S and van Aarde, N, 2013. This investigation by the Bureau of Mines was conducted chiefly on Cuban serpentine nickeliferous ores to determine whether these materials would be amenable to direct carbothermic reduction in an electric furnace to produce a low-carbon ferro-nickel. The project was carried out as one of several under a Memorandum of Agreement between the Bureau of Mines and the General Services Administration (Contract GS-OO-B (D)-152l). Two ore samples were received for this investigation. One was a mixture of nickeliferous serpentine from the North Ocujal, South Ocujal, and San Juan claims of the Nicaro Nickel Co. The other sample was a mixture of material from the Ramona and the Lorna Mulo claims of the Cuban Nickel Co. Most of the ore from the Ocujal-San Juan deposits and about 40 percent of the sample from the Ramona-Lorna Mulo deposits were calcined before smelting. The remainder of the sample from the Ramona-Loma Mulo deposits was smelted after drying to about 8 percent moisture. An arc-resistance, selective-reduction smelting technique was employed in these tests. Either bagasse alone or a mixture of bagasse and coke was used for reductants. No flux was used in the furnace charges.

Recrystallization studies on chrome-bearing spinel materials were made by the Bureau of Mines to determine the effects of certain fluxing agents and cooling rates on the chromium-to-iron ratio of recrystallized spinel. Statistically designed and evaluated tests showed that the ratio of chromium to iron in naturally occurring chrome spinel could be increased from 1.5 to 1 to over 7 to 1 and that the ratio of chromium to iron in the chrome-spinel in a stain-less steel slag could be raised to over 18 to 1. Silica, magnesia, and lime had significant positive effects, while alumina had a significant negative effect. Cooling rates of 200 C per hour in a programmed spiral globar electric furnace were satisfactory for growing crystals of recoverable size.

This publication has been prepared to supply manufacturers and industrial users a listing of mobile diesel-powered equipment and subassemblies approved and certified by the Bureau of Mines for use in nongassy noncoal mines and tunnels. This revised and supplemented listing supersedes an earlier publication2 released in 1963. Testing of diesel-powered equipment is one phase of the Bureau's program of health and safety that concerns approval of electrical and diesel equipment designed to prevent explosions, fires, shocks, or toxic hazards in underground mines, when such equipment is used and maintained properly. Manufacturers submit machinery and component parts to the Bureau for study of their design, safety features, and use. Equipment must pass exacting tests and must meet strict requirements established through research and experience and outlined in the Bureau's permissible schedules before the Bureau approves it for safe use in mines.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has been concerned for many years with the general problems of underground coal mining and the particular problems due to the methane content of the coal. The Bureau and others have worked diligently to improve the health and safety conditions for underground coal miners. It has been recognized for many years that the methane in coal would have some value if it could he recovered and used, Also its removal before coal mining began or during the mining cycle itself would make mining safer and more economic due to a potential saving in ventilation costs. The work covered in this report was carried out to review methods of removing methane from active and inactive regions of operating coal mines and to determine how the methane could be concentrated and utilized economically.

[This Is the ninth in a series of reports on properties of commercial motor fuels, made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Cooperative Fuel Research (C.F.R.) Committee and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the interior. The first report gave data on motor gasoline sold during the winter of 1935-36.3/ The Present report presents analytical data for 2,033 samples, representing the products of approximately 80 companies, which, as in previous surveys, include both large and small suppliers. In addition, the Pacific coast is represented by data that were average by the Pacific Coast Technical Group before 'being submitted and are published exactly as they were received. As in previous surveys, the data are divided into the three groups of samples of regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines, and each group has been averaged separately. The cumber of samples, items, and brands comprising each group, exclusive of those of the Pacific coast, arc as follows: Regular price, 1,066 samples, 208 items, and 49 brands; premium price, 575 tamales, 154 items, and 38 brands; third-grade gasoline, 7;4 samples, 150 items, and 53 brands. Apparatus for the analytical distillation of crude oils under an artificial pressure of 760 mm. of mercury has been designed and constructed. This apparatus enables laboratories at high altitudes to make Bureau of Mines routine analyses of crude oils with results similar to those obtained by laboratories at sea level. This is especially important for laboratories in the Rocky Mountain region, where barometric pressures of approximately 600 mm of mercury are encountered. During the past 30 years, the ?Bureau of Mines has made several thousand analyses of crude oils from various parts of the United States and from foreign countries. The first part (stage 1) of the distillation for the analysis is made at atmospheric pressure, and as most petroleum laboratories are near sea level, comparable results are obtained ordinarily. However, the increased use of the method by .laboratories at high altitudes has caused difficulty, as the analyses cannot be accurately compared with analyses from laboratories at sea level. For instance, laboratories at 7,200 feet generally report 2 to' 4 percent (based upon the crude oil) more gasoline than sea level laboratories. The use of the pressurized apparatus developed by the writers makes it possible for these high-altitude laboratories to duplicate analyses made at sea level.

This paper presents the performance of nineteen open-ended steel pipe piles driven through highly variable overburden soils into glacial till and schist bedrock. The piles were 16 inches in diameter and 0.656 inches thick, with yield strength of 50 ksi. The piles were designed for a service capacity of 250 kips and were driven to achieve an ultimate geotechnical capacity of at least 500 kips. Due to the large variation in the ground conditions, installed pile lengths ranged from 25 to 66 feet. Some piles were driven to refusal on the bedrock while others were terminated at final driving resistance of 2 to 7 blows/in. Two piles were suspected to be plugged during driving while others did not. Each pile was instrumented with strain gages and accelerometers near the pile top, and observed using a Pile Driving Analyzer (PDA) to provide preliminary guidance on pile capacity achieved at end of initial drive (EOID). The influence of plugged and unplugged pile toe conditions on the interpretation of pile capacity was investigated using Case Pile Wave Analysis Program (CAPWAP). Characteristics of driving energy, compressive and tensile stresses developed in the steel pipe piles, and the resulting pile deformation behavior are discussed. INTRODUCTION The Hunters Point South redevelopment in Long Island City, Queens is one of New York City’s major efforts to transform former manufacturing zones into mixed developments for the middle-income community. The site is located along the eastern shoreline of the East River and Newtown Creek. The development included low to high-rise residential buildings, a public school and retail structures. Open spaces were created along the East River and Newtown Creek waterfronts in the form of a continuous park providing for recreational and community related activities. Waterfront structures included small park buildings, walkways and viewing platforms with the shoreline protected by revetments as part of the City’s flood mitigation strategy. The project was implemented in two phases, with completion of construction for Phase 1 in 2013 and Phase 2 in 2019. Based on available historical information, extensive reclamation took place between 1855 and 1898. After 1951, changes to the shoreline were made along the East River, including the removal of reclaimed land along the northern portion of the project site to allow for docking facilities. By 1977, these facilities had been demolished and backfilled to form the current shoreline configuration. The present site was temporarily used as a parking lot with stockpiles of fill mixed with construction demolition rubble, rip-rap and boulders of varying heights across the site. The existing ground surface varied significantly up to approximately 25 feet difference in elevation. The stockpiles were removed and the site was re-graded during final development of the project. This paper discusses the foundation design challenges due to the loose overburden soils and potential obstructions within the fill material, in particular, the issues relating to installation of open-ended steel pipe piles through the ground conditions encountered on site.

This Bureau of Mines report describes 2nd evaluates iron ore resources in California and Nevada and analyzes the California and Japanese iron ore markets in which these resources will be used. The competitive position of California-Nevada ores, in these markets, was estimated by comparing regional iron ore prices, production costs, and transportation costs with those of foreign suppliers. Resources were determined to be sufficient to produce the equivalent of 585 million tons of 64-percent iron pellets at a price of less than $15 per ton delivered at California ports. Much higher tonnage could be produced at higher prices. Iron ore requirement of the California iron and steel industry will increase to an estimated 15.9 million tons by the year 2000. A study of the iron ore production potential of California-Nevada deposits and of out-of- State sources indicated that this ore requirement can be supplied most economically by California-Nevada ores. Iron ore import requirements of the Japanese iron and steel industry will increase to an estimated 150.0 million tons by the year 2000. A study of price trends in this market indicated that very little California-Nevada iron ore will be sold in Japan after 1973 when existing sales contracts expire. Iron ore-exports might be economically possible if ore could be transported from California to Japan at ballast rates as backhaul on existing petroleum shipping.

THIS-report gives results of in investigation of the carbonizing properties of 18 coals, including 2 from Alaska, 12 from British Columbia, 3 from Washington, and 1 from Utah. Each coal was carbonized in the standard 13-inch Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association (BM-AGA) retort at 900° C. Plastic properties were determined by the Gieseler and Davis methods, and agglutinating and free-swelling properties were determined by standard methods. Expanding properties were measured in the Bureau of Mines sole-heated oven. From the results of the tests on these single coals, three coals from the Crowsnest area in British Columbia, representing Elk River Nos. 4, 9, and 10, were selected for blending with the Utah coal, which was from the Lower Sunnyside bed, Horse Canyon mine, Emery County. Lower Sunnyside also was blended with Wilkeson -Nos. 2 and 3 (Washington) coals, Pocahontas No. 3 from McDowell County, W. Va., and the Oklahoma low-volatile coal used in the blend carbonized at, the Provo, (Utah) coke plant at the time this investigation was started. Most of the blends contained 3 percent hard pitch, which is the proportion used at the Provo plant. The blends were also carbonized in 13-inch BM AGA retorts at 900° C. High-volatile B coal from the No. 3 bed, Evan-Jones mine, Lower Matanuska, Valley, Alaska, yielded poorly fused coke or char. M-bed coal from the Chickaloon mine, Upper Matanuska. Valley, Alaska, ranked as medium-volatile bituminous and coked strongly. It expanded 39.6 percent in the sole-heated oven at a. charge density of 55.5 pounds per cubic foot..
