The survey work on protective canopy design was conducted in a 2-month period commencing November 15, 1973. The reported re¬sults under this contract are intended to provide guidance to coal mine operators in complying with federal regulations pertaining to incorporation of protective canopies on underground coal mine electric face equipment. All coal mine electric face equipment manufacturers and 11 coal mines were visited in the course of conducting this survey. Canopy designs currently being manufactured and those now being used underground were examined and discussed with manufacturers, mine operators, machine operators, and safety committeemen. The general objective was to find out what kind of canopies are now being made and used underground, what the operational problems are, and what can be done to secure improvements. Specifically, the survey scope was as follows: a. Survey all electric face equipment manufacturers. b. Survey 10 coal mines (seam height 60 inches and greater). c. Identify current production canopy configurations and minimum mine entry dimensions for each model and type of electric face equipment. d. Assess in-mine operation of canopies developed by manufacturers and/or coal companies. e. Specify optimal canopy configuration and minimum mine entry dimensions for each type and model of electric face equipment.

The Bureau of Mines investigated coal deposits at Mount Gran (latitude 76°59' S, longitude 161°07' E), Victoria Land, Antarctica, during the austral summer of 1959-60 as part of the continuing U.S. Antarctic Research Program, which is under the auspices of the National Science Foundation. The coals and associated rocks were measured, sampled, and analyzed. Five coalbeds, ranging in thickness from over 10 feet to scattered fragments of coaly material in sandstone, occur in a sandstone-coal series overlying a series of crossbedded red-buff sandstones. Both series are part of the Beacon group of sediments, and both show some evidence of pressure metamorphism. The sandstones are poorly cemented and are composed dominantly of rounded and often frosted quartz grains. The sediments have been broken and uplifted by a series of massive diabase sills. The broken nature of the sediments precluded an estimate of the amount of coal present. The Mount Gran coals are highly attrital banded anthracites and semianthracites that have most commonly a moderately dull luster but do include bright bands. Coal in contact with or near diabase intrusives is partly graphitic but shows no evidence of coking. Apparently the coal was beyond coking rank before emplacement of the adjacent intrusives. Fragments of the plant Glossopteris indica found with the coal suggest Permian age but do not prove it. The coals appear to be derived from plant remains that collected in shallow basins; individual coalbeds would tend to be lenticular bodies that formed in different places as the dominantly sandy sediments were deposited. The wide distribution of coal indicates that coal-forming conditions prevailed over much of the continent; the great thickness of Beacon sediments indicates that similar conditions may have persisted through a long period of geologic time. Generally similar coal deposits may occupy widely separated stratigraphic positions.

Based on laboratory structure analyses, a pilot plant investigation was undertaken to evaluate a Michigan conglomerate native copper ore. Comminution or sized feed was accomplished using wet, closed circuit autogenous grinding with and without crushing of the recirculating load. Coarse metallics were concentrated in two stages of jigging with fine metallic copper being recovered in a three-stage xanthate flotation circuit. With a feed averaging 2.09 % Cu, copper recovery ranged from 86-93 % Cu with an average grade of 55.5 % Ca. An evaluation of the processing flowsheet is made in terms of pertinent independent, dependent, and external variables and design factors. Rate equations are developed to describe the grinding and flotation circuits separately as well as the entire circuit as a whole. Performance equations for the overall operation and for the unit operation of autogenous grinding alone are developed in terms of suitable capacity, efficiency and energy consumption terms. Thus, the effects of feed rate, recirculating load and flowsheet design can be rationally evaluated. Energy consumption for various conditions in the pilot plant is compared to the laboratory value. Additionally, size and scale up factors are discussed. Recommendations are made for further studies to be undertaken to further quantify the ore characteristics and the nature of the autogenous grinding operation. However, the feasibilty of beneficiation of this type of native copper ore by means of an autogenous grinding/jigging/flotation circuit is clearly established.

During early development of the blast furnace, Connellsville coke made entirely from Pittsburgh-bed coal proved to be an excellent fuel. The need for blending coking coals arose as the industry grew and it became necessary to carbonize coals having voking properties inferior to those of Pittsburgh coal Most coals carbonized today in continental Europe and this country are blonded: This practise has improved the quality of coke and permitted the utilization of coals that would yield inferior coke, if carbonized sepa- rately, The depletion of the world's better coking coals, which has been noted by leading coal technologists,2/4/wes accelerated during the recent war and. It is important, therefore, that reserves be evaluated and conserved. In the principal, steel-producing sections of this country, Pocahontas coals have been blended so extensively that the terms "low-volatile coking coal": and. "Pocahontas" have become virtually synonymous. Other low-volatile coals. have been used to manufacture metallurgical coke and will be used more extensively as, the supply of the better known and more accessible Pocahontas coals decreases. Recognizing the need for augmenting the supply of high-rank coking coals, the Bureau of Mines has included both low- and medium-volatile coals in its Survey of the Carbonizing Properties of American Coals, which was started with the cooperation of the American Gas Association in 1929. Twenty coals, 12 of low-volatile and 8 of medium-volatile rank, have been blended with high-volatile A Pittsburgh-bed coal, and five standard low- volatile coals have been blended with various high-volatile coals. In the last 30 years, human appropriation of global renewable resources has accelerated to the point where 35 per cent of the earthÆs land surface is now in managed agro-ecosystems, consumptive water use consumes between 50 per cent and 85 per cent of freshwater supply and 60 per cent of ecosystem services are utilised in an unsustainable manner. There are virtually no landscapes in which renewable resources are not already fully allocated among different economic and environmental uses. Furthermore, it is increasingly recognised that water availability issues do not exist in isolation but are linked with the related environmental issues of biodiversity preservation, the carbon cycle, soil degradation, and energy use and supply. It is against this background that the sustainable management of water in mining is increasingly developing a strategic viewpoint where water is viewed as a resource within an interconnected landscape, having economic, environmental and social value and providing a range of environmental services in the provision of public and private goods. This paper explores the issues associated with sustainable management of water in mining from a strategic viewpoint. The cumulative impacts of multiple water users, both within and outside the mining sector, is increasingly threatening the security of supply for all users. To quantitatively assess the ætrueÆ value of water it is necessary to: Better understand the science of ecosystem functioning and how human actions impact on environmental processes. Develop appropriate policy, finance and governance structures to support innovative programs that preserve ecosystem function and services (including market based instruments). Apply knowledge as interventions across landscapes in ways that maximise benefits and minimise unintended consequences taking into account differences in the value of water among sectors. A strategic viewpoint of water management relies on knowledge to guide decision making that has been acquired at a range of scales from mine site to mining region. This knowledge must be based on rigorous science, sound data and syntheses of different types of information. Strategic management of water resources will better position the industry in terms of understanding the risks posed by complex, interlinked environmental issues that are increasingly impacting on future access to land and renewable resources, including water, thereby ensuring miningÆs future social licence to operate.

Alabama probably has the most extensive deposits of high-grade flake graphite in the United States and was the largest producer during World War I. Therefore, with the outbreak of World War II, users of flake graphite turned again to Alabama to supply their requirements. Flake graphite is the most important ingredient contained in graphite crucibles used in melting crucible steel and special alloys essential for war purposes. Early in World War II the Army and Navy placed flake graphite on the list of critical war materials. During World War I, when the supply of Ceylon graphite (then in demand) was cut off, large quantities of flake graphite were produced in Alabama, and about 40 mills were built. Most of these were abandoned after the war when imports of the cheaper Madagascar flake (which gradually replaced Ceylon graphite) began to reach this country. With the beginning of World War II, the Madagascar supply was cut off', and consumers were again compelled to look to domestic sources for their supplies. They found only one small mill in operation, that of the Ceylon Graphite Co. in Coosa County, Ala. The Bureau of Mines made a preliminary examination of the Alabama flake graphite deposits in 1940. Samples were taken and tested at the Southern Experiment Station at Tuscaloosa.

A minitest of the new potassium chloride-potassium carbonate two-stage in-situ uranium leach process has been carried out at the Intercontinental Energy Corporation (IEC) Zamzow project site in South Texas. Substantial quantities of high concentration uranium were produced indicating the viability of the leach solution. The test results yield information regarding the reservoir dispersivity, the average cation-exchange capacity of the formation, and the distribution coefficients describing cation-exchange reactions. The test also indicates permeability anisotropy and the existence of disturbed flow fields.

The primary objective of this final phase of Contract No. H0133004 was to provide a description of all experimental assemblies and procedures used throughout this project in such a detail as to permit duplication of the tests in any other laboratory. A further objective was to summarize and evaluate all results generated throughout the duration of this program and to tabulate all the materials and data in such a manner as to allow this report to be used as a reference index for specific compositions or groups of compositions regarding potential hazards arising from their use .in underground coal mining operations. "The Crandall Canyon Mine (CCM) is located in the Wasatch coal field in central Utah. Extensive longwall mining at CCM preceded a decision to recover coal left in barrier pillars on each side of a set of main entries extending far into the mine. During mining in March 2007, a major bump occurred that led to cessation of mining in the barrier pillar on the north side of the mains and to the start of mining in the south barrier pillar. Subsequent loss of ground control in August 2007, through coal pillar bursts had tragic consequences with loss of six miners and shortly afterward three rescue team members. A U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA)report describes the events in detail (MSHA, 2008).An important lesson to be learned from CCM is the need to select a computer program suitable for pillar design. Computer programs are engineering tools and selecting the right tool for the job is essential. In this regard, minimum program requirements include capability for computing stress distribution within a pillar and adjacent roof and floor strata. The reason is simple: strength of rock is stress dependent; both vary from point to point in pillars and adjacent strata. Preferably, one should follow the evolution of stress as the mining plan is executed from start to finish to assure safety or to warn of a potentially hazardous situation developing as mining progresses.The approach to the problem posed by barrier pillar mining at CCM is conventional in the sense of applying well known finite element modeling techniques to analysis of a proposed mining plan. The engineering purpose is to evaluate the mining plan with respect to ground control questions including roof, floor and pillar safety. Results of previous two-dimensional finite element analysis indicated pillar safety was by no means assured (MSHA, 2008; Pariseau, 2008; Pariseau, 2011). Geometry of barrier pillar mining is limited in two dimensions for example, crosscuts are not seen in vertical cross sections. While three-dimensional analyses are preferred, even moderately sized regions often lead to very large problem sizes that exceed computer capabilities. However, a recent development in finite element modeling of tabular deposits allows for whole mine analysis in three dimensions. This technique involves a dual node - dual mesh concept. Both have been used separately in much earlier work, but are only now used in combination. It is possible to have an estimation of subsidence at a kilometer scale and details of stress, strain and displacement about barrier pillars, main entries and pillars, and so on at a meter scale (Pariseau, 2014). No compromise involving empirical formulas or similar guess work is required. Indeed, all calculations are based on first principles: physical laws, kinematics, and material laws. Effects of joints and in situ variability or uncertainty in strata properties, elastic moduli and strengths, may be included for greater realism. An important objective of the present study is to assess the role of three-dimensional pillar geometry in arriving at conclusions regarding barrier pillar mining versus two-dimensional results."

The modeling of the extrusion of 6061 alloy and its composites with 10 to 20 vol% Al203 or SiC by two techniques. The uniaxial finite element method FEM (DEFORM" ) provided force-stroke curves and temperature rise over the range 450-500 °C, 2.6-5mm/s and extrusion ratios of 31 and 64. The traditional technique considers ideal work and redundant work as well as friction and uses average temperatures and strain rates. The two techniques are used to clarify each other and to extend the analysis to 400 and 350 °C. The calculated efficiencies are compared to measured values in extrusion trials and to values derived for 7075 extrusion analyses. The analyses are based on constitutive equations determined by torsion testing tests.

"In this study, physical, chemical and microscopic characteristics of high phosphorus oolitic hematite were studied firstly. Based on which, the new methods of high phosphorus hematite used in the æsolid state reduction by rotary hearth furnace - magnetic separationÆ and iron nugget by rotary hearth furnace direct reduction processes were discussed. The results showed that high temperature, low basicity and high carbon content is conducive for the apatite in iron ore to reduce into molten iron, but not conducive to the removal of phosphorus. Through optimisation of process parameters, dephosphorisation rate of high phosphorus hematite is more than 60 per cent by æsolid state reduction roasting-magnetic separationÆ process while that is up to 80 per cent by iron nugget process. This bulletin is a detailed study of low-temperature, entrained-bed carbonization of a Texas lignite. The lignite studied was from the Sandow strip mine and is representative of the Rockdale formation of the Wilcox formational group. Carbonization was conducted in a continuous entrained-bed reactor at several temperatures in the 8801 to 1,52°C F range, and at air-coal ratios it the 0 to 10.30 scf/lb range (moisture- and ash-free basis). Carbonization rates ranged from 97.1 to 410.0 lb/hr (as-received basis), At the higher air-to-coal ratios employed, all or most of the carbonization heat was provided by internal combustion with air in the reactor. At the lower air-to-coal ratios, parts of the heat for carbonization was supplied externally. It was demonstrated that the entrained-bed carbonization of lignite is a complex reaction and that several variables, of which carbonization temperature, air-to-lignite ratio, and the average size of lignite are important, act together to influence both the carbonization yields and the properties of the resultant products, Process variables established by pant tests were used to design the industrial scale carbonizer operated at Rockdale, Texas, by the Texas Power & Light Company as agents for the Aluminum Company of America. Properties of the carbonization product obtained from the industrial scale reactor were essentially the same as those obtained from the pilot plant reactor operated under the same conditions.

"INTRODUCTION The Iron Mountain deposits were examined in the summer of 1943 by engineers of the Bureau of Lanes, and a diamond-drilling project was set up under the Strategic Minerals Program. Actual drilling operations, under the supervision of a Bureau engineer, commenced November 9, 1943, and were completed on November 1, 1944. When the Bureau began detailed exploration of the Iron Mountain deposits, the Federal Geological Survey participated. Dr. I. W. Newhouse, of the Survey, and Dr. A. F. Hagner, of the Wyoming Geological Survey, were assigned to the investigation.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. The Bureau of Mines inventoried the land availability for mineral exploration and development in northern Alaska and compared this land with known mineral terranes and mineral deposits, to quantify the potential for favorable location of mining claims for metalliferous mineral deposits. This report includes thirty-three 1:500,000-scale maps that depict land availability, and the accompanying text and tables relate availability acreage to areas of favorable mineral terranes. Three categories of land availability and ownership are identified, along with 12 subcategories of land status. Available land comprises approximately 14.5 million acres or 16% of the 90.3-million-acre study area; land available with restrictions accounts for 7.5 million acres or 8%; and unavailable land encompasses 68.3 million acres or 76%. Mineral terranes underlie 37.8 million acres or 42% of the study area; 5.3 million acres or 14% are available for mineral location, 2.8 million acres or 7% are available with restrictions, and 29.7 million acres or 79% are unavailable. There are 500 known mineral deposits or occurrences within the study area. This includes 271 lode deposits, of which 171 lie within a recognized mineral terrane and 55 are on available land. The remaining 229 are placer deposits.

"Deposits of gray hematite occur in two districts in Talladega County, Ala., the Emauhee-Tallasochatchee and Weewoka, both in the vicinity of Winterboro, 50 miles east of Birmingham.The deposits were investigated by the Bureau of Mines in 1943 and 1944. Approximately 13,000 feet of diamond drilling was done and 6,000 linear feet of trenches excavated and sampled.A total of 13,000,000 tons of ore averaging 36 percent iron was indicated in all areas.A detailed discussion of each property investigated, drill logs, and sampling results are given in this report.In the work done in the Talladega County iron investigation, special acknowledgement is due to Paul M. Tyler, formerly regional engineer, Eastern Region, and Richard W. Smith, formerly district engineer, for aid and direction of the project; also to J. B. Clemmor, metallurgist, for diligent research work in the Southern Experiment station laboratory. All were members of the Bureau of Mines Staff.The project was conducted in cooperation with the Federal Geological Survey, whose field work was in charge of T.G. Andrews assisted by Brewster Baldwin. Against the receding background of the October stock market crash and the December overhang of inventories, the economy began with a shaky start in 1988. As 1988 began, the Administration's estimate of real growth for 1988 had just been reduced from 3.5% to 2.4% and economists and other ob-servers were concerned that the expansion that was 5 years old might be near the end and that a recession might be around the corner. The ensuing moderately strong economic activity, however, belied all the negative signals that were evident earlier, and the real GNP continued to grow at an estimated 2.3% annual rate during the first quarter of 1988, extending the ongoing recovery into the sixth year (table 1.). The relatively accommodative policy of the Federal Reserve Board (the discount rate was cut by 0.25% in January), a strong performance by the export sector, and the revival of consumer spending were major forces underlying the economic strength. But as the quarter drew to a close, signs of tight capacity utilizations were apparent in many of the export and capital goods sectors, including textile, chemical, plastic, metal, and machinery. Employment was at a record high level while the unemployment rate was close to a historical low. Prices were rising at a faster pace than those of 1987, and the dollar resumed its slide after a brief recovery in January and February. These factors gave rise to the fears of higher inflation. Long-term interest rates increased, casting a pall over the prospect of a robust growth for the rest of the year.

Ceremonies for the induction of four mining industry pioneers into the National Mining Hall of Fame will be held Saturday, Sept. 22, 2007 at the Charles F. Barber Pavilion (Museum Convention Center) in Leadville, CO. The four inductees are James Harold Courtright (1908-1986), Dr. Howard L. Hartman (1924-2002), Charles Washington Merrill (1869-1956) and Kenyon E. Richard (1915-1993). The inductions will bring to 197 the number of mining “greats” whose engraved photographs and biographical sketches are installed in the National Mining Hall of Fame.
