This report presents experimental work conducted on a number of coals found within the boundaries of the Missouri River Basin, which were, to an extent, a selection of coals typical of that region. In the min, the laboratory work falls into three general classifications: (1) Laboratory distillation assay of coal to establish yields on carbonization; (2) chemical analyses of the coal samples before drying or carbonization; and (3) chemical analyses of the products of carbonization. It will be seen in the following discussion that these data derived from the small-scale laboratory apparatus are useful in predicting yields from pilot plants or industrial units. Coal is produced in about 48 general areas or mining fields in the Western States, of which approximately 18 fall within the limits of the Missouri Basin.3/ Beginning with the Northern Colorado field, through the Central and Western Wyoming fields, the coal is principally bituminous and subbituminous rank. The western Montana coals are also of these ranks. Progressing northeast from central Wyoming the coal decreases in rank, as shown by the subbituminous C coals of the Gillette field in northern Wyoming and the lignites of eastern Montana and North Dakota.

Discarded automobiles represent the greatest single resource of reusable metals, plastics, and rubber in the United States. This report presents results of Bureau of Mines research, conducted from 1965 to 1983, on separating and recovering useful materials from the scrapped hulks, using old and new metallurgical techniques combined with standard scrapyard methods. The Bureau determined the materials composition of three composite cars designated as circa 1960, mid-1970's, and early 1980's, and used these cars to study smokeless incineration and hand-sorting techniques. In studies on treating rejects from automobile shredders, the Bureau designed a process that included air classification, water elutriation, magnetic separation, handpicking, and heavy-medium separation, and also investigated cryogenics and liquation. Complete recovery of cop-per and other metals was economically made by hand and tool dismantling, leaching, or selective melting of starters and generators. Techniques are also discussed for plastic recovery and waste tire treatment.

The two methods for calibrating the parameters K and (alpha) for use in Gy’s equation for the fundamental sampling error (FSE), the duplicate sampling analysis (DSA) and the segregation fractionalised analysis (SFA) are described in detail. A case study using identical broken reef material from a Witwatersrand-type orebody is calibrated using the DSA and SFA methods and the results are compared. Classically, the form of Gy’s equation for the FSE raises the nominal size of fragments given by dN to a power of 3. Gy’s formula is a theoretical formula applicable in the case when fragments are randomly collected one by one, which is obviously never the case. This is because the fragment shape factor (f) and the granulometric factor (g) were introduced to take care of this anomaly. More recent formulae, such as those suggested by François-Bongarçon and Lyman, are empirically based formula. A later modification of Gy’s formula raises dN to the power ? (alpha), the latter term being calibrated with the coefficient K in the DSA and SFA methods. The preferred value of ? (alpha) for low-grade gold ores used by sampling practitioners in the mining industry is 1.5. A review of calibration experiments for low-grade gold ores using the DSA and SFA methods has produced values of K that vary between 70 and 170 and values of alpha in the range 0.97 to 1.30. The average value for alpha is found to be 1, rather than 3 as originally proposed in the classic form of Gy’s equation or the industry preference for 1.5. It is suggested that for low-grade gold bearing ores, the equation for the FSE should raise dN to a power of 1. Such an equation for the variance of the combined FSE plus the grouping and segregation error, now referred to as the short-term component of the quality fluctuation error (QFE1), greatly simplifies the characterisation of gold ores, which now only requires the calibration of K for a given mass and established fragment size. The implications for the heterogeneity test from the generalised equation are that provided the fragments have been screened to within a narrow size range, any particular size will return a value for K that is acceptable for use in the sampling nomogram.CITATION:Minnitt, R C A, 2017. Recoverable economic copper sulphide minerals such as chalcopyrite, bornite, chalcocite and covellite often occur together in varying proportions in the major copper-bearing ores, and have individual flotation requirements and characteristics. Pyrite also occurs in these ores to varying extents as the sulphide gangue, and is problematic because of its natural tendency to float quickly and easily. In a bulk sulphide float, selectivity against pyrite is desirable, particularly if it does not host other paymetals such as gold or silver. At the same time it is a requirement to float all of the copper sulphides despite their electrochemical differences. The electrochemistry and semiconductor properties of these minerals are reviewed, together with implications for flotation with and without collector addition. Mixed collector systems for the improved flotation of these sulphides are proposed as a solution. The use of xanthate and dithiophosphate in the collector suite allows the co-existence of dixanthogen and free dithiophosphate radical because the latter has a higher redox potential requirement than xanthate to oxidise to the dithiolate. Because some of these minerals require dixanthogen, and others, free thiolate, to generate surface hydrophobicity, a bulk flotation of all the species becomes possible in the overlapping area of Eh and pH between the two dithiolate equilibrium lines on the Pourbaix diagram. The arsenic-signature copper minerals are added to the study, since many copper operations encounter arsenic as a penalty element in the saleable concentrate. It is shown that the addition of arsenic to the copper and iron sulphides alters the semiconductor and electrochemistry properties, and in turn, its flotation characteristics. The degree of mineral association and liberation between these minerals can be a complicating factor due to textural associations, and should also be considered in the process as a next step.

Current production costs and market conditions in the potash industry of the Carlsbad area were studied to determine the potential values of the potash mineral resource that would be lost or foregone if the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) facility is constructed on the proposed site in that area. The purpose of the WIPP project is to investigate the possibility of developing a nuclear waste disposal plant in the salt formations at the site. Analyses were made of all potash deposits determined to be in the site. Mining and processing under the most favorable recovery systems were considered. Value determinations were based upon estimated operating and capital costs of current mine-mill operations in the Carlsbad area. This study was made for the Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA) by members of the Federal Bureau of Mines Minerals Availability System staff.

"INTRODUCTION This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States is a continuation of a series of reports made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Coordinating Research (CFR) Committee of the Coordinating Research Coouncil (CRC) 4/ and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first of these reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36. 5/ Further reports were issued describing motor gasolines sold during the succeeding summers and winters to and including the summer of 1941. 5/ reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1941-42 and during the summer of 1942. However, starting with the winter of 1942-43, the semiannual reports were resumed. 5/The present report presents analytical data for samples, representing the products of approximately 100 companies. Most of the samples represented in this report were obtained during December 1)55 and January 194o. As in previous surveys, the companies covered by the survey include both large and small suppliers. Conforming to former reports, the data cover three groups of samples - regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines.As the number of analyses submitted for samples of third-grade gasoline are not considered adequate to represent this type of motor fuel, data for the analyses have not been averaged, but the individual items are tabulated. The number of samples, items, and brands comprising each group is as follows:Regular-price, 1,958 samples, 317 items, and 96 brands; premium-price, 1, samples, 292 items, and 85 brands; third-grade, 58 samples, 22 items, and 14 brands. The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the composition as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the ash-softening temperature, the free-swelling index, and the Hardgrove grindability index. Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions4/ issued by the Bureau of Mines, the samples are analyzed in the Bureau laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor and, if it is not, a price adjustment is made. Analyses of the delivered coal and tipple samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. In addition, the continuous sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal.

This report summarizes the research and technologic work of the Bureau of Mines on coal and coal products from July 1, 1947, to July 1, 1948. It is the thirteenth of a series presenting resumes based largely upon publications issued during the year . In some instances , research and testing results , not otherwise available in published form , are presented . The individual publications given as footnote references herein will provide further detail to the interested reader . The period covered by this report was marked by an ever -mounting concern for the adequacy of the Nation's fuel resources and for fuel shortages arising from an increasing demand for fuels at home and abroad . Several reports appeared which delineated the place of synthetic liquid fuels in the future fuel technology and economy of the Nation , emphasized the fact that eventually the principal raw material for the production of such fuels will bet,5,6 coal, and described the progress made by the Bureau of Mines in developing processes for the production of synthetic liquid fuels . heard testimony along similar lines . Increased awareness of the fuels problems confronting the Nation led to an authorization by the 80th Congress for the erection of an anthracite research laboratory at Schuylkill Haven , Pa . , to house expanded Bureau of Mines research on anthracite . Design of the structure was well under way by the end of the fiscal year . ( See fig . 1. ) Looking forward to expansion of Bureau research on lignite , the 80th Congress heard testimony on the problems and programs of lignite research10, 11 as a prelude to authorizing the construction of a lignite research laboratory in North Dakota .

This report presents the results of tests conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to determine the transport characteristics of highly concentrated paste backfill mixes made from dewatered total mine tailings. The slurry concentrations of the mixes were all above 78 pct by weight with slumps ranging from 6.4 to 16.5 cm (2.5 to 6.5 in). Laboratory material property tests and full-scale pumping tests were conducted using pipe diameters of 102, 128, and 154 mm (4, 5, and 6 in) and a positive-displacement pump. The results indicated that the tested backfill mixes can be successfully transported as a stiff paste and identified the influence of and the interaction among the various mix and system variables.

Reconnaissance investigations were made of 129 iron occurrences in Arizona to determine their extent, attitude, and potential; character samples were analyzed to determine their quality and impurities; and pioneer metallurgical investigations were made on character samples to present their metallurgical problems. Some factors influencing past and potential western iron markets are discussed. The location, features, qualities, extent, and potential of iron occurrences and some associative resources--limestone and dolomite, coal, petroleum and natural gas, power, and water are discussed. The most abundant iron minerals are magnetite and hematite. The higher grade deposits are extensive contact-metamorphic or pyrometasomatic replacements of calcareous Paleozoic to Proterozoic rocks associated with intrusives. Large low-grade deposits of great potential are present as Precambrian taconite, semitaconite-, and jaspilite-like iron formations of magnetite-hematite. Iron occurs also as low-grade concentrations of magnetite in extensive alluvial deposits. Nonferrous metallurgical slags, nearly 100 million tons, are considered a potential source of iron. Various accessory elements are associated with the iron minerals and these pose metallurgical and economic problems.

This is one of a series of reports describing investigations made within the Missouri River Basin in Montana by mining engineers of the Bureau of Mines, Minerals Division, Region II. The primary purpose of these investigations is to provide basic information to agencies of the Department of the Interior and other agencies concerned with the planning of power and other water developments in the Missouri River Basin. This report contains only such factual data as have been authorized for public distribution. Special precautions have been taken not to reveal any information or data considered to be confidential. The field investigations for this report were made during the fall of 1948 and the summer of 1949. Virtually all of the known metallic mineral deposits and some nonmetallic (industrial) mineral deposits within Judith Basin County were investigated. Most of the mines and prospects have been inactive for many years; most of the old underground mine workings now are inaccessible or only partly accessible. Consequently, much of the information on many of the mines and prospects necessarily has been obtained from available U. S. Government and State publications and from owners and local residents.

This publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 295 natural gas samples from 18 States collected during calendar year 1963 as part of a continuous survey of the United States for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4863 and 576.4 Five previous publications have been made to present the results of 5,998 gas analyses made by the Bureau of Mines Helium Activity , prior to 1963. The first three , Bulletin 486,5 Bulletin 576,6 and Bulletin 617,7/ contain analyses and source data on 5,214 gas samples collected from 1917 to January 1 , 1961. The fourth and fifth publications , which are published as Information Circulars , supplement the three Bulletins and contain 784 analyses of samples collected during 1961 and 1962. The present Information Circular is the third annual publication supplementing the three Bulletins .

Two of the most critical concerns a blaster faces today are airblast and flyrock. Airblast, sometimes called noise or overpressure, can cause damage to neighboring structures, especially windows. It also is the cause for many vibration complaints. The human sense of hearing is often more acute to identifying source than the sense of touch. When a blast occurs, the airblast is what identifies the event. The vibration that may be felt is then associated with the airblast. Vibrations of greater magnitude, such as passing trucks or construction work on the house, go unnoticed because their sounds are familiar or expected. Flyrock is the number one killer and cause of damage. Elasting laws provide limits for these two concerns. Failure to comply may result in fines, closing of the operation, and even prison. Airblast and flyrock originate from two distinct areas, the open face and the bench surface. Each of these areas is addressed in the detailed proven procedures that follow, and if used by the blaster in conjunction with his own blasting knowledge, a sound blasting plan can be developed to minimize the occurrence of airblast and flyrock.

Domestic nickel resources are costed to develop a contingency supply curve of U.S. nickel availability at various costs. It is estimated that 4.3 billion pounds of nickel is potentially recoverable from 698 million tons of ore at prices ranging up to $6.36 per pound of nickel. Over 95 percent of the total is estimated to be available at a price of less than $4.00 per pound.

Alluvial cassiterite concentrations are widespread in river gravel and high level terraces within the Ray River watershed. The area lies in unglaciated terrain of Alaska's northern interior. Cassiterite originates from several calc-alkaline plutons of the Ruby batholith. Extensional stresses resulted in graben-like Tertiary basins that were flooded by a 200 ft thick section of mid-to late- Tertiary basalt flows. Basalt blocked local drainages, and 50- to 100-ft of terrace gravel was eventually deposited on top of the flows. Further downwarping and eventual fluvial downcutting of the flows resulted in cycles of accelerated sediment transport, deposition, and reconcentration. Repeated erosional cycles concentrated heavy minerals and resulted in development of tin placers. Preliminary resource estimates of contained tin in Recent alluvium range from 62 to as much as 172 million lbs-Sn in 300 million yd3. Grade of about 90% of the gravels is estimated to range between 0.2- to 0.5- lbs-Sn/yd3. Associated gold and rare earth elements (REE) in monazite and xenotime may be recoverable. Most of the tin is considered a subeconomic inferred resource, though, at least some of the gravels contain 2-to 6-lbs-sn/yd3. Estimates are projected on the basis of surface sampling and several auger drill holes and are provided for the purpose of land-use management planning.
