A new analytical formula for predicting ground vibrations induced by blasting is proposed. One factor accounts for geometrical spreading. One factor corresponds to inelastic attenuation. The geometrical spreading function is based on likely source geometries, idealized as either square-root, cube-root or site-specific scaling, and on the propagation characteristics of predominant wave types. The inelastic attenuation is approximated by an exponential function. The empirical constants in these functions are backcalculated from field measurements. Regression analysis has been performed on twenty-three sets of measured data in order to determine the validity and the effectiveness of the proposed method. In many cases, the proposed method gives better correlation than the conventional method. In most of the remaining cases, there was no difference between the two methods. Best-fit lines given by the proposed method fit the data trend very well, especially at large scaled distances. At large distances the proposed method gives a prediction much closer to the actual values than the conventional methods. The statistical analysis shows not much difference between square-root, cube-root or site-specific scalings.

Preliminary examination of the north-central Kansas clay deposits was made by the junior author during March 1943. He was accompanied by Norman Plummer, ceramist of the State Geological Survey of Kansas. Three areas Nacre selected for further investigation. Detailed field investigation by the Bureau, consisting of hand auger drilling, trenching, anti. test pitting to obtain representative samples of the clays was carried on from April to June 1943. Field .work was under the direction of Edgar B. Butte and Richard L. Schumacher, former Bureau of Mines engineers. The samples taken were analyzed at the Bureau of Mines laboratory at Rolla, Mo. Factual data obtained from the field investigation and laboratory work are set forth in this report.

Yttrium and rare-earth element. pegmatite dikes are associated with a peralkaline granitic and nephelene syenite complex near Dora Bay on southern Prince of Wales Island. Mineralized dikes were mapped and sampled during USBM investigations in 1987 and 1988. Coarse-grained pegmatite dikes, which emanated as late-stage magmatic fluids from the intrusion, further evolved into vein-dikes and ultimately silica-rich veins. The dikes can be traced up to two miles along a north-south zone. Lithophile elements exhibit a pronounced zonation in vein-dikes and veins that are distal to the Dora Bay complex with increasing values correlating with increasing distance from the complex. The pattern of mineralization suggests very late stage magmatic fluids containing the incompatable lithophile elements were injected into a preexisting north-south fracture zone. REE mineralogy exhibit fine-grained intergrowths of principally thalenite and bastnaesite with lessor monazite and eudialyte. Euxenite contains most of the columbium values and zircon is commonly associated with the dikes. Estimates of inferred and hypothetical resource tonnage range from 1.7 X 1C6 to 8.5 X 106 st for two deposits. Contained RED (including yttrium) averages 0.5 pct and ranges up to 2.0 pct. Deposits are of polymineralic composition and about half of this resource comprises the heavy yttrium subgroup.

Mineral analyses and electrical resistivity measurements of 324 representative samples of oilfield brines from 24 oil-productive counties in Mississippi and Alabama are presented in tabular form. Results of the mineral analyses, which include calcium, magnesium, carbonates, bicarbonates, sulfates, chlorides, sodium, and barium (with strontium if present), are reported in milligrams per liter. Electrical resistivity measurements in ohm-meter2 per meter at 75° F are reported in ohm-meters in the tables. Chemical analyses of formation waters are helpful to operators having water problems associated with petroleum recovery; electrical resistivity values are helpful in making interpretations from electric logs.

Domestic byproduct fluorine (in fluosilicic acid) availability at various price levels of aluminum fluoride were determined and a contingency availability curve developed. The supply of byproduct fluosilicic acid is restricted in amount to certain geographic regions, where plants processing phosphate rock are located, and the byproduct can be collected. The maximum possible U.S. annual supply, based on potential plant capacities, is 373,400 tons of fluosilicic acid containing 295,400 tons of fluorine. Based on inputs of 5, la, 25, 50, and 100 thousand tons per year, five levels of producing aluminum fluoride from fluosilicic acid (100 percent) were costed. Based on a 12-percent discounted cash flow rate, including the cost of salvaging the fluosilicic acid, the calculated selling price of aluminum fluoride ranged from $233 per ton to $448 per ton. At the higher price, 98 percent of the potential supply of byproduct fluosilicic acid could be used profitably; at the lower price only 46 percent could be used profitably.

Effective use of diesel vehicles in underground mining requires attention to improved control of diesel exhaust pollutants such as particulate (soot), oxides of nitrogen and sulfur and carbon monoxide. An experimental survey Is made of diesel emission aftertreatment control techniques including water scrubbers, catalytic converters, exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and soot filters. Use of two or more techniques in combinations are tested for optimum control of all exhaust pollutants. Dynamometer data is developed for steady state and computer controlled simulated mines duty cycles operation of Deutz F6L-714 and F8L-413 engines. Exhaust Quality indices (EQIs) are calculated from dynamometer data for comparisons among the control combinations examined. The Corning diesel particulate filter (DPF) is shown to be the most promising and practical device. The Corning DPF in combination with EGR provided the best (lowest) EQI from the test data. Use of the DPF requires additional regeneration mechanisms such as a catalytic filter coating or fuel additives. A metal mine field test is made of DPFs on an operational scoop tram to test practical applicability. Further development is proposed for application to various mine conditions and for improvement of DPF regeneration techniques including coating with newly available catalysts.

The Bureau of Mines investigated a geologically favorable area in the Beluga River coalfield in south-central Alaska to determine if there were sufficient minable coal reserves for onsite utilization to meet the projected thermal power needs of the Anchorage area. A program of diamond core drilling and sampling delimited a shallow saucerlike structure estimated to contain indicated reserves of more than 20 million tons of subbitminous coal in a seam over 50 feet thick that could be mined by opencut methods. A large sample of fresh coal was taken across the full width of the seam for washability studies. This sample, with 4 volume-percent of clay partings eliminated, contained 24.4 percent moisture and 16.8 percent ash and had a calorific value of 7,162 Btu per pound. The studies indicated that mechanical cleaning would be of doubtful value.

"The National Safety Competition of 1938, the fourteenth of its kind conducted by the Bureau of Mines in which bronze trophies known as Sentinels of Safety are awarded to winning companies, has just been completed and the results are presented here.With 345 mines and quarries competing, more than in any previous year except 1931, the contest revealed low accident rates at many of the enrolled plants and, which is even more remarkable, it revealed 113 mines and quarries at which no lost-time accidents occurred during the contest year.The Sentinels of Safety trophies, provided by The Explosives Engineer magazine, were awarded to four underground mines, one open-pit mine, and one quarry. Each employee of the winning plant was awarded a Certificate of Honor by the Bureau of Mines in recognition of the employee's part in helping his company to win the trophy. In addition to the award of trophies, a Certificate of Honorable Mention was awarded to each of the mines and quarries in second, third, fourth, and fifth places in their respective contest groups and also to each mine and quarry that worked 30,000 or more man-hours without a lost-time accident. Ninety-two such certificates were awarded for 1938. Twenty-three other mines and quarries also operated without an accident but worked less than 30,000 man-hours, the minimum required by the contest rules for award of Certificates of Honorable Mention.Previous to 1938, five trophies were awarded annually in the National Safety Competition. For the 1938 contest a sixth trophy was provided by The Explosives Engineer so that open-pit mines and quarries, two classes of operations that previously had been included in one group in the competition, might have separate awards."

The compositions of olivine, pyroxene and chromite from the Proterozoic ultramafic complex are analagous to those of cumulate ultramafic rocks of tholeiitic origin, suggesting that the parent magma may have been tholeiitic rather than komatiitic. The complex contains economically significant Ni-Cu sulphide mineralisation. The high sulphide/silicate ratio is best explained in terms of the segregation of sulphides from a large volume of magma, of which all but the ultramafic cumulate fraction has since been eroded. Platinum-group minerals that have been identified include sperrylite, moncheite, native platinum, froodite, merenskyite, michenerite and Pd-rich pentlandite lamellae exsolved from pyrrhotite. They are characteristically found in close association with chalcopyrite, either along the contacts between hydrosilicate and sulphide grains or in cracks within pentlandite and chalcopyrite, which may also be intergrown with galena. Crystallisation from a Cu-rich residual magmatic liquid also enriched in Pt, Pd, As, Sb, Bi, Te, Zn and Pb is postulated.

The methods used and the funds available for the development and oper- ation of shall mines and the reopening of small abandoned mines frequently present problems that tax the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the mining engineer far beyond that required in the mass production from large deposits. The objective of this paper is to describe in considerable detail the means whereby engineers have solved local problems in reopening an abandoned mine at which equipment, facilities, and funds were limited... The Etowah Coal & Iron Co. Gadsden red-iron-ore mine at Gadsden, Ala., 18 of interest in this category since it is the only independent red-ore mine under active development in the State. All other red-ore mines in Alabama are owned or controlled by the large iron or steel companies. The The mine, located on the southwest end of Shinbone Ridge in the outskirts of Gadsden lies in an ares once productive. but now idle, for many years. ore is relatively highgrade compared with that in the Birmingham area, but the bed is thin and somewhat lenticular. The presence of a large blast furnace at Alabama City, 3 miles from Gadsden, and the growing scarcity of red-iron ore supplies for it offered inducements for reopening the mine in 1946. Up to the time this circular was prepared (1947) only a small quantity of ore (about 1,500 tons) has been produced and shipped to the furnace. A force of 14 men was employed in sinking the main slope and developing a third "lift" (a local term for level) 100 feet below the old mine workings.

This report on the properties of burner-fuel oils produced during 1956 was issued under a cooperative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, at the request of the Oil-Heat Institute of America and the petroleum industry. This survey is the second for this type of fuel, the first being made in 1955. 2/ The surveys are conducted to provide information on the characteristics of burner-fuel oils now manufactured for sale. They are similar in pattern to the diesel-fuel surveys, conducted since 1950, 3/ and are not intended to conflict with but rather to supplement them. The importance of fuel oil has resulted in the need for more information by the petroleum industry, manufacturers of heating appliances, and consumers regarding the types and qualities of the fuels currently being marketed. Samples of burner-fuel oil typical of their manufacture during the early part of 1956 were analyzed by the refiners in accordance with instructions from the subcommittee on fuel surveys of the Automotive Research Committee of the American Petroleum Institute, Results of the analyses were transmitted to the Bureau of Mines where the data were studied and compiled as shown in the tables of this report.

The first report contained data, on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36.3/ The present report presents analytical data for 2,020 samples, representing the products of approximately 120 companies, which, as in previous surveys, include both large and small suppliers. In addition, the Pacific coast is represented by data averaged by the Pacific Coast Technical Group before being submitted and are published exactly as they were received. As in previous surveys, the data are divided into the three groups of samples of regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines, and each group has been averaged separately. This report is one of a series written by members of the Solid Fuels Mission to Germany describing wartime developments in the mining , preparation, and utilization of coal . The mission was organized early in 1945 under the auspices of the Technical Industrial Intelligence Committee , which cooperated with a counterpart British Committee . Engineers from other allied countries cooperated in some of the investigations . The Solid Fuels Mission operated under the direction of a steering committee headed by Dr. C. J. Potter , deputy solid fuels administrator . The personnel of the mission consisted of H. F. Yancey , in charge , J. W. Buch , Thomas Fraser , L. L. Newman , and L. D. Schmidt , of the Bureau of Mines ; H. H. Lowry , Director of the Coal Research Laboratory , Carnegie Institute of Technology ; H. J. Rose , vice president and director of research , Bituminous Coal Research, Inc .; and F. H. Reed , chief chemist , Illinois Geological Survey . Over 50 reports were written by the members of the Solid Fuels Mission . These and microfilms of supporting data obtained in the course of the investigations are on file at the Bureau of Mines , Washington , D. C. where they are available for public examination . The Office of the Publication Board in the Department of Commerce is prepared to furnish photolith copies , photostats , or microfilm reproductions of all declassified reports . A Bibliography of Scientific and Industrial Reports is issued weekly by the Department of Commerce , Office of the Publication Board , and is sold by the Superintendent of Documents , Government Printing Office , Washington 25 , D. C. , on a subscription basis . An initial payment of 10 dollars will provide for approximately 9 months , and subscribers will be notified when additional remittance is necessary . The reports of the Solid Fuels Mission relate to the following general subjects : Mining methods in the Ruhr district of Germany , with special reference to mechanical cutting and loading equipment , pneumatic packing , and Diesel mine locomotives ; activities of industrial research laboratories supported by the German coal and coke industry ; coal preparation in western Europe ; low-temperature carbonization processes ; metallurgical coke from weakly coking coals ; low- ash electrode carbon from coal ; new developments in the production of metallurgical coke and the utilization of gas and byproducts ; briquetting brown coal and bituminous coal without the use of binders ; recent engineering developments in gas turbines and steam generators , with special reference to use of coal ; German coal-fired heating and cooking stoves; and the commercial extraction of coal with solvents for production of synthetic liquid fuels or chemical products . Numerous reports on the activities of German synthetic - liquid -fuels plants and the plants for the production of synthesis gas from solid fuels are available in the same office as the Solid Fuels Reports . It is planned to publish in this series of Information Circulars the more important reports or combinations of reports prepared by the members of the Solid Fuels Mission . A similar series on synthetic - fuel activities is being prepared .

The New Hope field was selected for study by; Bureau of lanes engineers because many problems met by, the operators during development and operation were unique to petroleum-engineering experience. Solving these problems is believed to have doubled the ultimate recovery of oil from the field. Since the discovery well was 'completed, in April 1943, an oil-productive area of 4,950 acres- has been delineated by the drilling of 64 wells, four of which were dry holes. Four oil-bearing reservoirs - the Bacon oolitic limestone, and the Hill, Pittsburg) and Elledge sandstones, all, in the Trinity group of the Lower Cretaceous series-- have been penetrated at depths ranging from 7,300 to 8,100 feet. Three of these reservoirs were found to be closed-type or solution gas-drive reservoirs, and one - the Hill - was an open-type or water-drive reservoir. During the course of the study, the Tide Water Associated, Oil Co. and -Seaboard al Co. of Delaware made available to the writers all well records, electric logs; and coring, production,, and pressure data. The ,writers performed Certain field and laboratory- tests on cores of ,the reservoir racks and' samples -of the reservoir Oils. Analyses of cores from the four reservoirs showed average .porosities ranging from 10 to 18 percent, average permeabilities of 17 to 297 millidarcys, and -average 'connate water contents ranging from 25.4 to 30.6 percent. Subsurface and recombined samples of reservoir oils indicated that the oils in the Bacon Hill, and Pittsburg reservoirs contained ,206 to 422 cubic feet of gas in solution per barrel initially, and that the, reservoir oils were undersaturated with gas. No samples' of oil from the Elledge reservoir were analyzed, and because of meager data this reservoir was not studied in detail. 4 The presence of free 'gas' or a' gas cap, however, indicated that the oil in the Elledge reservoir was saturated with gas. The rapid decline in pressures in- the' four reservoirs during the 'first year of operation alarmed the operators and provoked them to investigate the reservoir conditions to determine the cause.
