"INTRODUCTION The use of sheaths or hollow cylinders of flame-extinctive materials surrounding cartridges of permissible explosives has been developed during the last few years; the history of sheathed explosives in their salient development in Belgium was treated recently in a publication of the Bureau of Mines. 6/ This development is of great interest in explosives technology, for it holds possibilities of reducing further the ignition hazards that may cause many coal-mine disasters. The township interest in sheathed explosives in this country is attested by the passage of some State laws permitting the use of such explosives on shift 7/; inquiries are received in increasing numbers concerning the effects of sheaths on practical hazards as well as the general technology underlying their use."

The accompanying supply/demand flow diagrams and 10-year tables for mineral and fuel commodities present essential data required by government, industry, and others to formulate policies and programs that can help assure an adequate and continuing supply of mineral raw materials. The 10-year data base terminates with 1975 figures because adequate world information was not available beyond that date. The selected mineral supply/demand tables and flow diagrams comprise but one "output" from the massive body of information and data collected and compiled by the Bureau of Mines on a continuing basis covering mineral production, consumption, prices, shipments, imports, exports, and stocks, as well as industry activities in all States and abroad.

The first Report of Investigations of the present series (No. 4562) was on the fundamental properties of lead compounds, and the manner in which they set limits to the richness of lead products treated in the usual sintering-blast furnace units. These properties of the compounds were emphasized, as' it was desired, also, to learn the limitations of smelting the same compounds in present ore hearth practice; the hearth has a competitor in these "usual" units, even with the rich lead feeds best adapted for the hearths. Operating conditions that were followed in older metallurgical processes, when rich products, were treated, were outlined. The second report of the series (R. I. 4563) was on the development of the ore hearths of the types now used in the Tri-State from the viewpoint of the features, functions, and dimensions of the earlier hearths that had been most changed. Experimental data, for both well and poorly desulfurized charges being considered, were given to show the relative changes in the sizes and compositions of the charges after they were added to the ore (Scotch) hearths. A general picture was given of the charge column and of the conditions prevailing there when the operation was satisfactory. In this third paper, the composition of the gases prevailing in the charge column at various elevations will be correlated with what has been learned of the nature of the charge column in order to trace the steps of operation by which lead sulfide is converted into metallic lead. The metallurgical factors that govern operation and the lines along which improvements may be made will be noted.

Globally, private minerals companies considering the transition to a public company and entrepreneurs looking to create a new public company through, for example, an initial public offering or by a reverse takeover have many options. For companies with assets around the Pacific Rim, there are arguably five key stock/securities exchanges that actively promote international minerals company listings, and these are located in Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Singapore and the United Kingdom.Listing on any of these exchanges requires a range of technical, commercial, financial and legal documentation. Each exchange has specific rules and requirements for technical documentation to support the listing process. Once listed, each exchange also has specific rules for technical information to meet ongoing compliance requirements. The coal reserve base in the Western United States is presented for coalbeds amenable to extraction by underground mining methods. The Federal Bureau of Mines has abstracted data on the quality and quantity of coal resources/reserves from numerous State and Federal publications and modified such data as necessary to allow computer storage and retrieval. Tonnages are compiled by State, county, coalbed, and rank, and allotted to sulfur categories by statistical apportionment. The coal reserve base in those States west of the Mississippi River, amenable to underground mining, is estimated to be approximately 131 billion tons. Of this total, about 30.8 billion tons are bituminous coal, 100.2 billion tons are subbituminous coal, and 126.4 million tons are anthracite. Lignite is not considered for underground mining in this report. Included in this report is a glossary of terms applicable to a classification system for coal resources and reserves as jointly defined by the Bureau of Mines and U.S. Geological Survey. The purpose of this system is to provide for direct comparison or compilation of various resource/reserve data.

This volume describes the use of the Penn State Mine Ventilation Simulator (PSU/MVS) to model existing mine ventilation systems and, in addition, to evaluate the effect of system modifications. Ventilation survey methods designed to insure computer input data of sufficient accuracy for simulation purposes are covered in comprehensive detail, including quantity and pressure measurement and fan performance testing. The development of input data from ventilation survey results is discussed and illustrated by the use of an actual field survey. Two programs, written in FORTRAN IV with WATFIV, are presented to calculate airway head losses from altimeter pressure measurements. An existing coal mine ventilation system is analyzed and modifications to the system are simulated and evaluated. In addition the application of the PSU/MVS to non-coal mines is briefly discussed. An extensive bibliography on ventilation surveying and simulation is included.

Five watersheds, ranging in size from 29 to 49 acres, were selected in East-Central Ohio to investigate the hydrologic and water quality conditions occurring before, during, and after surface mining. Four of the watersheds will undergo surface mining, involving either the Number 6, 9, 11, or 8 coal seams, and one watershed having an outcrop of the Number 6 coal will be operated as a control watershed. To determine the premining hydrologic and water quality conditions (Phase 1), physical information was obtained for each watershed and instrumentation was installed for obtaining hydrologic data and water quality samples. In addition to topographic maps, soils and vegetation maps were prepared. Stratigraphic columns were developed from geologic cores; networks of observation wells and of soil moisture access tubes were installed; and weather stations were established to measure temperature, humidity, wind and solar radiation, and to collect precipi¬tation samples. Field data were collected over a 10-month period for one watershed and for about 8 months on another watershed before surface mining began. The other watersheds continued in the premining data phase. These data were for precipitation, temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, solar radiation, snow and frozen soil, soil moisture, infiltration (rainfall simulator), spring discharge, runoff from watersheds, and ground-water levels. Also, samples of runoff and ground water were obtained for chemical analyses and additional samples of runoff were acquired for suspended sediment load determinations. Over the study period, precipitation was not very representative of the long term averages, but data are available from the control watershed for a representative 7 year period which should prove invaluable in modeling the hydrology of the project watersheds for the premined conditions. Spring discharges (before mining) from the upper aquifer of two of the watersheds averaged only 508 and 652 gallons daily. The proportion of precipitation occurring as surface runoff from the large watersheds ranged from 8 to 36 percent and the peak discharges from 5.86 to 81.95 cfs. Base-flow and runoff water samples from four of the watersheds (unmined conditions) were collected and analyzed quantitatively for 39 water quality parameters. Monthly precipitation samples sediment fractions of the base flow and runoff were analyzed for 22 and 17 parameters, respectively. The average concentrations of the water quality parameters for the watersheds (unmined), except for suspended solids, were as low or lower than the EPA recommended maximum allowable concentrations in drinking water. Several parameters in precipitation equaled or exceeded the levels of corresponding parameters in runoff water. The average concentration of suspended solids in storm runoff ranged from 118 to 1110 mg/l, and for base flow the range was from 44 to 247 mg/l; the higher concentrations were associated with the watersheds exhibiting the greatest disturbance. Iron ranged from an average of less than 3 µg/1 to 228 µg/1. Manganese ranged from less than 41 µg/1 to 334 µg/I. Ground-water systems (unmined condition) are described for the five project watersheds. Each watershed was found to have two major perched aquifers within the top 250 feet. Generally, these perched aquifers involve local flow systems, though flow across watershed boundaries in some areas. Recharge is mostly from local precipitation and discharge is mostly as spring flow, base flow, evapotranspiration, and leakage through the underlying confining bed. Shallow ground water was commonly of the calcium bicarbonate type. Although dissolved-solids concentration was generally 200 to 600 mg/1, brackish or salty ground water was present in several areas. A composite hydrologic model for the project watersheds will consist of separate ground-water, unsaturated flow, overland flow, and evapotranspiration component models. The ground-water model (a modified quasi-three--dimensional U. S. Geological Survey model) operates on a grid network and the newly formulated unsaturated flow model was divided into overlying prismatic elements for numerical solutions. The unsaturated flow model includes provision for incorporating the evapotranspiration model. An available distributed kinemetic overland flow model was utilized. An analyses was made of one of the costs of reclaiming coal mines; the legal and administrative costs of complying with legislation. Such costs borne by coal companies under the Ohio law are thought to be a surrogate of these costs under the new Federal law. Regression analyses were used to relate the legal and administrative costs to acres in the permit and the tonnage of coal produced.

Thunder Basin Coal Company received the 1987 Wyoming Excellence in Surface Mining Award for construction of the State's first major sediment control reservoir to be designed using the new settleable sol ids standard. Use of this standard resulted in construction cost savings of more than $250,000; reduced water quality monitoring; enhanced downstream channel stability because of more natural sediment loading; allowed simultaneous establishment of permanent waterfowl and fisheries habitat; and provided a quality recreational site. This article will address factors associated with the design and construction of that sediment reservoir and the benefits that were realized. Eight underground surveys were conducted to evaluate drum design, drum spray nozzle locations, ranging-arm sprays, water quantity, wetting agents, and cutting techniques. The final report is made up of eight dust-control technique reports, each discussing, details of the individual mine surveys.

This Bureau of Mines publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 495 natural gas samples from 21 States and three foreign countries. Of this total, 376 samples were collected during calendar year 1968. The remaining 119 analyses are of samples collected during previous years, but releases granting permission to publish the results Here not received until 1968. All samples were collected as a part of a continuous survey of the free world for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917 and in late 1965 was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4863 and 576.4 Ten previous publications have presented results of 8,165 gas analyses made by the Bureau of Hines Helium Activity prior to 1968. The investigative work described in this report was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines under a cooperative agreement with the department of mining engineering of the University of Illinois and the Illinois State Geological Survey." The purpose of this agreement was to provide for a comprehensive investigation of coal-mining conditions in the State, with especial reference to the possibility of lessening waste in the mining and preparation of coal and of reducing the dangers to which miners are exposed. The Bureau of Mines paid particular attention to those phases of the investigation that were of general interest from their bearing on safety and efficiency in the coal-mining industry as a whole. Thus, it studied the occurrence of gas (methane) in the mines of the southern part of the State," tested the inflammability of the coal dust from many mines, examined the efficiency of the control of ventilating currents, and investigated the factors affecting the humidity of mine air with respect to their bearing on the occurrence of mine explosions. Following the establishment of the fact that under certain conditions dry bituminous coal dust is inflammable, there arose the problem of finding efficient methods of preventing or limiting coal-dust explosions. Experiments in the gas-and-dust gallery at the Pittsburgh testing station of the Bureau of Mines verified the fact that certain dusts that explode violently when dry are rendered inert by proper humidi- .fication of the atmosphere within the gallery, and the importance of humidity as a factor in limiting the inflammability of coal dust in a mine is demonstrated by the fact that there has never been in Illinois a dust explosion during the summer months, whereas the records show a number of dust explosions during cold weather. It is easy to see that the warm moisture-laden air that enters a mine in the summer must deposit moisture on cooling, whereas the cold and relatively dry air that enters in winter must take up moisture as it becomes heated in traveling through the mine.

This report discusses processing and use of the principal forms of manganese. The focus is on trends in the United States in the 20th century and specifics of domestic manganese material flows as of about 1990. To protect proprietary data, quantitative assessments are limited to the iron and steel industry, which accounts for about 90% of consumption. Nonmetallurgical uses are considered qualitatively. Approximate disposition of a U.S. cumulative consumption during 1901-90 of an estimated 69 million st of manganese is estimated to be iron and steel slag, 69%; nonmetallurgical uses of a dissipative na¬ture, 10%; iron and steel scrap, 9%; National Defense Stockpile, 3%; unidentified and/or including items in service, 10%. In slag from iron blast furnaces and steelmaking, manganese is present as a minor, relatively im¬mobile component, which so far has been uneconomical to recover. Construction and road building are main applications for these slags. Steel slag contains the greater amount of manganese. Studies by others of global manganese fluxes and the effect of human activities on them also are discussed. One source concludes that the main effect of human activities, via deforestation and agricultural activities, has been to increase the rate of transport of manganese to the oceans.

This report on the physical and chemical properties of typical crude oils of southern Louisiana and southern Texas is the seventh in a series of preliminary chapters of a bulletin covering the producing districts of the United States. Preceding reports* may be obtained from the Bureau of Mines on request. The details of the methods used in this survey in collecting samples and making laboratory tests have been discussed in the first three papers. A method of summarizing and interpreting the laboratory data has also been given, but most of the crudes included in the present report differ so radically from those previously reported, that it has been found advantageous to adopt a somewhat different method in making summaries. This method is described in detail later. If any errors or omissions are noted by readers, it is hoped that these will be brought to the attention of the Bureau of Mines, for correction before the appearance of the final bulletin.

The Bureau of Mines studied the Chattanooga Shale to determine the quantity and quality of the uranium resources present and to assess specific environmental effects of mining the shale. Geologic data and chemical analyses, mainly concerning a 12-county area of Tennessee, were compiled from previous published and unpublished reports. Uranium resources in the Gassaway Member of the Chattanooga Shale in this 12-county area were estimated to be between 4.2 and 5.1 million tons, contained in 76 to 91 billion tons of shale. These figures represent inground tonnages and do not allow for mining or processing losses. Depending upon efficiency of mining and processing systems, enough uranium could be available to satisfy a large part of the cumulative domestic and world demand through the year 2000. A model was developed which assesses the total tons or acres of shale to be mined if the Gassaway Member were to satisfy 1 percent of the United States demand for uranium in 1991. This partially demonstrates the environmental impact of mining the shale and is easily factorable to any specified demand.

The Bureau of Mines developed a rapid and precise method for predicting storage stability of motor gasolines. This method resulted from the investigation of many analytical techniques as well as a study of fuel composition and fuel component gum-forming mechanisms. The first section of this bulletin discusses the development of the prediction test through its several phases, including revision of the standard 110° F storage test; attempts to develop a modification of the ASTM D525 induction bomb test; and the ultimate abandonment of this procedure with the adoption of the 16-hour oven test that was both precise and rapid. The second section comprises a discussion of further studies of fuel com- position, including the reactivity of certain sulfur compounds and hydrocarbons to form gum. The compositions of various gums and inorganic deposits are reported in terms of elemental analysis and spectroscopic examinations. The reactions of tetraethyllead with selected hydrocarbons are also reported.

Starting on a small scale, the equipment for processing synthesis gas to form liquid hydrocarbons was expanded to handle 100 m) 3/hr. This reactor was successfully designed and constructed, and a basis for future design methods was established. Because, however, this work was carried out on an empirical basis, it is felt that a more thorough theoretical study should be made in an effort to increase the efficiency of the process, particularly in the development of a simpler converter.

"INTRODUCTION This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States is a continuation of a series of reports made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Coordinating Fuel Research (CFR) Committee of the Coordinating Research Council (CRC) 3/ and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first of these reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36.4/ Further reports were issued describing motor gasolines sold during the succeeding sum¬mers and winters to and including the summer of 1941.4/ No reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1941-42 and during the summer of 1942. However, starting with the winter of 1942-43, the semiannual reports were resumed.!The present report presents analytical data for 4,544 samples, represent¬ing the products of 124 companies. The samples represented in this report were obtained during December 19146, January and February 19-(. As in previous surveys, the companies covered Ly the survey include both large and small suppliers. Conforming to former reports, the data cover three groups of samples - regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines.As the number of analyses submitted for samples of third-grade gasoline are not considered adequate to represent this type of motor fuel, data for the analyses have not been averaged, but the individual items are tabulated. The number of samples, items, and brands comprising each group is as follows: Regular-price, 2,368 samples, 319 items, and 113 brands; premium-price, 2,172 samples, 289 items, and 106 brands; third-grade, 4 samples, 4 items, and 4 brands. This report describes the exploration and recent utilization studies the Bureau of Mines conducted on the Iron King, Chambers, and Dry Camp chromite deposits in the John Day district, Grant County, Oreg. The field investigations were undertaken during parts of 1939 and 1942 to determine the tonnage and grade of chromite in the district that could be utilized as a war reserve for the steel industry. As a result of the Bureau's field work, which included construction of 9 miles of access road, 6,204 feet of diamond drilling, 195 channel samples, and 1,020 linear feet of trenching, an ore reserve of 208,000 tons of 22-percent chromic oxide was indicated in the 3 deposits. Less than 1,000 tons of this ore has been mined since the field work was completed because the 2 largest deposits are submarginal in grade and there is as yet no incentive to develop and mine the ore. Since the war, however, the Bureau has been seeking means of utilizing the ore. Two methods of utilization that show promise are direct smelting of the ore in an electric furnace and use of the chromite for making refractory brick.

Correlations between mass spectra and the structure of the thiophene homologs are discussed . Comparisons with , and corroboration of , earlier workers ' correlations and predictions are made . Several additional correlations are reported to enable the spectroscopist to identify the substituents on alkyl - substituted thiophenes , and the relationship of the mono - substituted and 2,5 - disubstituted alkylthiophenes is discussed in detail .
