In Pennsylvania there are two distinct coal regions, bituminous and anthracite, in which the mining conditions and production trends are different. Bituminous mining is more mechanized, and production is increasing. This report is concerned specifically with the bituminous area. The bituminous coal industry apparently is facing a shortage of miners and mine officials which may become acute by 1970. Since 1949, when Pennsylvania had more than 100,000 bituminous coal miners, the number has steadily decreased. There are two principal reasons for the decrease of certified miners and mine officials. These reasons are the fact that apprentices are almost a thing of the past and the fact that the image of the coal miner is a poor one to people in general and to parents in particular. This has contributed greatly to the high average age of our miners today. The average age of all those employed in the mines is 50. Yet it is known that the progress in mine mechanization requires younger and more alert men to operate the newer type equipment.

In the annual report under the Explosives Act for 1905, H.M.inspectors state that over 90 percent of the accidents causing death or personal injury occurred in the use of explosives and under miscellaneous conditions to which the controlling provisions of the Act do not apply, and that such accidents caused 43 out of the 50 deaths, and 312 out of 348 cases of injury. The number of accidents grouped under the heading of “Use and Miscellaneous” is less than that for 1904 - viz., 281 against 301. By these accidents 43 persons were killed and 312 injured, as compared with 39 killed and 343 injured in 1904

Gold dredging has made such rapid strides of late and there is such a widespread interest in this branch of mining that I venture to contribute a detailed account of the way in which a Keystone driller was used by me in California to loosen, by blasting, a very tight gravel deposit, preparatory to dredging. Those who use electric detonators in firing blasts will be interested in a new electrical testing instrument known as the ‘Blasters’ Friend’, recently devised by the New York Blasting Supply Co. of New York. Owing to the necessarily delicate construction of the platinum wire bridge in the shell of a detonator, it frequently happens that it becomes broken or disconnected; thus destroying the circuit and rendering the detonator worthless. In many cases, misfires and premature explosions are caused by defective detonators. Heretofore, to detect the deficiencies of a detonator before using has been an impossibility, owing to the absence of a testing instrument adapted to the purpose.

Since its introduction to North America in the early 1970s, various elements of the system have been successfully installed in a variety of applic11tions both in Canada and the U.S.A. Examples are chosen from the coal, fine aggregates, iron ore and industrial minerals industries.II. Elements of the Linatex Solids Recovery System(A) The Linatex Separator (See Fig.I)The Linatex Separator, which is the heart of the system, is a specialized type of hydrocyclone designed to give a self regulating rope discharge product. It has the familiar cyclone geometry of cylindrical and conical section, tangential inlet, apex and vortex finder. The apex is enclosed in a unique patented automatic underflow regulator consisting of a collapsible rubber sleeve, and the overflow line is a siphon-leg, with a controlled air bleed valve. The siphon leg is adjusted so as to balance the internal negative pressure acting as a closing force on the underflow regulator against the mass of slurry pressing down on it from the cone section of the Separator. With correct adjustment the underflow regulator will close drip-tight on a water only feed. As solids accumulate in the apex of the cone the weight of solids counterbalances the vacuum and cat1ses the underflow regulator to open and discharge classified material at a controlled density."

You and I can visit cement plants, inspect the various rotary kiln systems and find some equipment or some burning techniques that waste energy--fuel and power. After we have made such a visit and studied a few ideas, we could recommend ways to eliminate much of this waste. Probably every idea would cost money to bring into action. For our discussion, let us arbitrarily set an upper limit of $1,000,000 on the recommendations that we are allowed to make. Call these "low-cost" or "short-term" measures. They are improvements that do not require more than say, three months to complete; they do not require a major revision to the process. Other recommendations are "high-cost" or "long-term"; they are outside the scope of this discussion. Some of our "low-cost" recommendations would offer a satisfactory return on the money that they cost; the remainder would not. Now, is there some way that we can rather quickly pick out the "low-cost" measures that will show a satisfactory return and spend our time making these improvements first? Can we separate these items from those where the return is less likely to be good? I feel that we can pick some of these items quickly if we have a kiln system that has consistently non-uniform day-to-day operation. If the operation is uniform we probably cannot pick them quickly.

The Carlin Trend is one of the most significant gold mining districts in North America. Located in northeastern Nevada, a total of over 17 million ounces of gold have been produced since 1965 at Newmont Gold Company's open-pit and underground operations. Oxidized portions of the sediment-hosted, disseminated gold deposits at Carlin generally consist of finely disseminated concentrations of sub-micron sized native gold particles hosted in Paleozoic siliciclastic or carbonate rock. Oxide ore is commonly amenable to dump leach or heap leach processing, yielding an average 50 to 70% recovery of total contained gold. Refractory unoxidized ore requires some form of pretreatment oxidation to ensure economic gold recovery. Geologic ore control is typically combined with standard assay and engineering techniques to maintain both grade and metallurgical control ofleach grade ores. Mine geologists provide a vital function through field observation and recording ofmineralogic data during daily, visual blasthole logging. Intricately mixed refractory materials must be separated from oxide ore to ensure highest possible gold recoveries. Geologic information is combined with assay data to create mine polygons in an engineering computer database. Mining selectivity is further enhanced by in-pit ore control geologists who are available to make production decisions based on direct mineralogic observations at active mine faces.

The business of mineral exploration and development has become much more than simply a problem of locating orebodies and designing mines. Favorable economic analysis of mining and processing feasibility is no longer sufficient to justify the development of a mine. New laws, enacted by virtually every level of government, require comprehensive land use planning, environmental analysis, mineland reclamation, mine safety studies, and many other considerations. This profusion of new laws says in effect, that the mining company is no longer responsible only to its stockholders. Mineral development today can be compared to a partnership. As in all partnerships, the risks and liabilities as well as the benefits are held jointly by all the participants. In addition to the mining operator, this partnership consists of the public, through its many levels of government, interest groups, and individual citizens. Therefore, you'd better know your partner very well - his responsibilities and capabilities. Mining is considered a high risk venture. The risk on the part of the operator and the lending institutions has long been recognized. The risk that the public and its government take in these mining ventures has now been recognized also. The people and their government have learned that they inherit, through abandonment or forfeiture, the mistakes and problems of individuals and companies regarding these natural resources. In looking through the "Mining Engineering Handbook" recently published by the Society of Mining Engineers, I noted that in their discussion of liability for excavations, the authors quoted from the book of Exodus, 20th chap., where Moses said to his people: "When a man leaves a pit open, or when a man digs a pit and does not cover it, and an ox or an ass falls into it, the owner of the pit shall make it good; he shall give money to its owner, and the dead beast

The profitability of miscible flooding in a hypothetical target oilfield is examined. The major costs, including Windfall Prof it Tax, are identified and their re1ative importance are discussed. The sensitivity of profit to important physical and economic variables is evaluated and discussed, including variance in oil recovery, oil price, injectant requirements, injectant cost, and capital requirements. Economic sensitivities to important development and operating decisions such as timing, Spacing, Slug size, and gas recycling are also analyzed. The Windfall Profit Tax (WPT) as it applies to gas miscible EOR projects is reviewed. The effect of WPT on each of the various project cases is analyzed and the effect of reduced WPT on remaining production from existing operations is evaluated. Tax implications are compared for integrated vs. "independent" controlled projects and the alternative of expensing vs. capitalizing tertiary injectants is also evaluated. The impact of the Net Income Limitation in reducing WPT. during early and late project life is determined and discussed.

"A mathematical model has been developed to investigate the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD), thermal, and solidified behavior in electroslag remelting process. Based on the finite volume method, a multiphase coupling MHD approach is employed to investigate the droplet formation as well as movement in molten slag under the action of an alternating current. The VOF formulation is adopted for interface tracking. The electrical potential method is adopted for the electric current and magnetic field. The Electromagnetic force and Joule heating are recalculated at each time step and then is implemented in the momentum and energy equations as a source term, respectively. Moreover, solidification of the metal is described by an enthalpy-based formulation, while the mushy zone is treated as a porous medium with porosity equal to the liquid fraction. The model is used to investigate the effect of electrode tip shape on MHD, thermal, and solidified behavior and provide valuable information.IntroductionElectroslag remelting (ESR) process has been used widely to produce high-performance alloys dedicated to critical application, such as hot work tool steels, nickel base alloys, the manufacture of components in aerospace and landbased turbines, etc. Figure 1 shows a schematic diagram of ESR process including a consumable electrode, a molten slag pool, a liquid metal pool, a solidified ingot, and a water-cooled mold. Alternating or direct current flows from the electrode to the water-cooled baseplate through the high resistivity calcium-fluoride-based molten slag which result in Joule heating and Electromagnetic force (EMF). Part of the Joule heating melts the electrode and the droplets travel through the slag and accumulate the liquid metal pool. The electrode is continuously advanced into the slag as it melts to build up an ingot of improved structure and composition by controlled solidification and chemical refinement. The metallurgical properties of the remelted ingot are really related to the solidification structure, which strongly depends on magnetohydrodynamic, thermal, and solidified behavior in the molten slag, liquid metal pool, and mushy zone."

"It is widely accepted that bulk ore sorting could provide a step change in processing of low-grade ores. For this to be achieved a rapid, accurate bulk sensor of grade is required as well as sufficient natural variation of grade in the ore stream. CSIRO trialled a magnetic resonance (MR) sensor capable of measuring chalcopyrite, and by inference total copper grade, on the 1300 t/h Ridgeway portal conveyor. The gauge produced an unprecedented set of data down to a 1 t scale for months at a time. This paper analyses the measured variation and compares it to a simple model derived from the bore core data and mixing within the block cave mine.The model of the small-scale (<1000 t) variation is developed using fractal methods which have successfully been used in the past for copper porphyry deposits showing a power law or near power law distribution of copper grade and vein sizes. These fractal distributions have two features highly favourable for segregating ore, a large proportion of low-grade pods and the large-scale spatial clustering of grade. We show the presence of fractal ordering in bore core data at short range in the Cadia Ridgeway porphyry deposit and measure its persistence in the crushed rock produced by the Ridgeway block cave mine over one month. The model is then extended to demonstrate the effect of varying head grade, mixing and pod (or diversion) weight on bulk sorting efficiency.CITATION:Coghill, P J, Miljak, D, McGann, A, 2016. "Chevron notched samples achieve general acceptance for measuring the Mode-I (opening mode) fracture toughness of rocks. The cracked chevron notched semi-circular bending (CCNSCB) sample, which is developed from the International Society of Rock Mechanics suggested the cracked chevron notched Brazilian disc method, has recently received much attention. However, these chevron notched methods have not been fully mastered, some ideal assumptions based by their theories and formulas, such as the straight-through crack assumption (STCA), have not been verified detailedly. Fractures of CCNSCB specimens were numerically simulated considering different heterogeneities, geometrical and mechanical parameters. The results show that, the real fractures of CCNSCB specimens are never satisfied with the STCA. In fact, micro fractures not only occur in the notch tip but also the two chevron edges. Consequently, the crack front features prominently in a shape of parabolic curve, far from being straightthrough. Moreover, curvature of the crack front is only affected by shape of the chevron ligament. Cracks usually start from two sides of the notch tips rather than center of the notch width, and propagate deviating from the postulated fracture routes. These fracture mechanisms induce errors with the measurements, and thus more attentions should be paid to the real fractures of the chevron notched samples for measuring fracture toughness more accurately. INTRODUCTIONWith the increasing requirement of people for resources and energies, frequent rock engineering activities have been conducting, such as underground excavation, oil exploration and deep burial of nuclear waste. Many problems appear in rock fracture. Consequently, there are more and more attentions paid in rock fracture mechanics due to its broad application prospects for solving these engineering problems. Since Mode-I (opening mode) fracture is the most common failure mode in rocks, Mode-I fracture toughness is a primary parameter to predict rock mechanical properties in actual engineering, and thus its accurate values are necessary to the researches of rockburst, rock mass slope stability, rock cutting, hydraulic fracturing, tunneling, et al. Therefore, it is thus significant to evaluate and study relevant methods to obtain the reliable value."

Determination of cut-off grade?strategy is one of the most important stages of open pit mine planning and design. It is the parameter directly influencing the financial, technical, economic, legal, environmental, social and political issues in relation to mining operation. Choosing the optimum cut-off grade strategy that maximises the economic outcome has been a major topic of research workers for nearly one century. Many researchers have contributed in devising methods and algorithms, such as dynamic programming, linear programming, optimal control and so on for various aspects of its determination. In this paper, a non-linear mathematical programming for cut-off grade strategy optimisation is presented, considering the three main stages of mining operation introduced by K F Lane. In this model maximisation of net present value of mining operation, under the three constraints of mining stagesÆ capacities, considered as the optimisation criteria. Due to the discrete representation of the mining resource, the proposed non-linear formulation is approximated by a non-linear signomial geometric programming. According to non-convexity and the complexity of the proposed model, an augmented Lagrangian genetic algorithm was used to find the optimum cut-off grade strategy under varying and fixed price circumstances. To validate the proposed non-linear model efficiency, the results were compared with the results obtained by the K F Lane methodology. It was found that the proposed non-linear model works efficiently in the determination of cut-off grade strategy. According to the simplicity of the structure of non-linear programming modelling in comparison with dynamic programming it is hoped that, further development of this model would certainly provide the ability of considering managerial and technical flexibilities as well as incorporating more real mining conditions in the determination of cut-off grade strategy optimisation.

Southern Perú Copper Corporation ha desarrollado un programa de reevaluación de las reservas para optimizar cada etapa del proceso y así llegar a las reservas mencionadas. En este sentido, el presente texto desarrolla el esquema de optimización de una secuencia anual de minado. El proyecto comprende la realización de de perforaciones en zonas llamadas geometalúrgicas, con el fin de realizar pruebas metalúrgicas y definir el comportamiento del mineral en la concentradora y lixiviación. También se incorpora el concepto de índice de solubilidad, parámetro que sirve para diferenciar adecuadamente un mineral económico para flotación del de lixiviación y finalmente, se optimiza la secuencia anual de minado y disposición de material en botadero. En consecuencia, es importante determinar el uso de software y hardware adecuado para planeamiento de minado, ya que depende de la magnitud de la mina como en el caso deCuajone.

"This paper describes the mineralogical and metallurgical procedures used to determine the recovery and concentrate grade of heavy oxide minerals occurring in lode deposits. The data produced also provide vital information to the processing engineers, which allows them to develop the most suitable flow sheet for that particular heavy mineral, here called an Economic Oxide Mineral (EOM). It demonstrates how results are interpreted to ensure that the proper process is used at each treatment stage to optimise recovery and to produce the most suitable concentrate at that point. Reference is made to some of the current equipment and techniques that can be used to process EOMs. The paper shows that when assessing the economic potential of a new ore body, or existing ore treatment plant, ore characterisation (OC) is necessary. This is especially true for EOMs such as cassiterite (SnO2), wolframite ((Fe, Mn, WO4,) pyrochlore ((Na,Ca)2Nb2O6(OH,F)), and tantalite (MnTa2O6) where often what seem to be small changes in ore types can have major effects on recovery and concentrate grade. Due to advances in flotation technology scheelite (CaWO4) in some deposits can be less vulnerable to OC variability than other EOM’s. Thorough mineralogical examination is shown to be the fundamental basis of correctly undertaking OC. This is because mineralogical analysis identifies each of the steps required to ensure that all ore types and zones are recognised, and differences explained, and shows the benefit in using reference samples to compare differences in the ores. The OC methods used for EOMs containing metals such as tantalum, tin, tungsten and niobium are similar; if two or more of these EOMs occur in one deposit as separate minerals, then OC will show when and how these minerals should be separated. The OC techniques described for EOMs can also be tailored for other heavy minerals, precious metals and graphite."

The safe operation of gas transmission pipelines is increasingly coming under the spotlight. Increasing environmental pressure is also forcing pipeline owners and operators to ensure the integrity of their pipelines. The integrity of a pipeline is usually determined using intelligent pigging, often referred to as In Line Inspection (ILI). However, in many cases, gas pipelines cannot be pigged for a variety of reasons. The National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE) has recently published Recommended Practice (RP) 0502, referred to as the External Corrosion Direct Assessment (ECDA) Methodology to assist pipeline owners with assessing the condition of pipelines that cannot be pigged. 2. External Corrosion Direct Assessment - NACE RP 0502 The ECDA Methodology is conducted in four phases as follows: ? Pre-Assessment ? Indirect Inspection ? Direct Examination ? Post-Assessment In the Pre-Assessment Phase, all the relevant historical and current data relating to the pipeline in question is reviewed. This covers pipeline, construction, soils/environmental, corrosion control and operational data. The aim of the Pre-Assessment Phase is to determine whether ECDA is feasible, and if so, to define the ECDA Regions and finally to select the Indirect Inspection Tools that will be used for each region.
