The viscosity of TiO2-containing blast furnace slags may increase rapidly (commonly referred to as thickening) under strong reducing conditions in the blast furnace. To elucidate the mechanisms for slag thickening, measurements have been made of changes in the composition and rheological properties of TiO2-CaO-SiO2-Al2O3-MgO slags during the reduction process. The slag composition covered the range of 17–33 wt% TiO2, 9–19% Al2O3, 8–16% MgO and theCaO/SiO2from 0.8 to 1.4. The viscosities were measured using the rotating cylinder method at temperatures up to 1550ºC and the fusibility temperatures were determined from ‘breaks’ in the viscosity-temperature curves. The reduction of the slag was carried out in graphite crucibles at1500ºC for 2–6 hours The rheological properties of the slags during reduction were predominantly influenced by the slag basicity (CaO/SiO2), and the effect of other components depended largely on basic or acidic behaviour of the oxide. The reduction of TiO2in the slag by carbon was initially fast to formTi2O3, followed by further reduction to TiO and TiC. Correspondingly, the viscosity showed initially a slight decrease, followed by a gradual and then rapid increase. The thickening was found to be accelerated by an increase in TiO2content and a decrease in the CaO/SiO2in the slag. In addition to the existence of 1~3 wt% TiC, the thickened slags also had a significant amount of TiO (3~7 wt%), suggesting that TiO may play an important role in the ‘thickening phenomena’ ,possibly by forming solid solutions with TiC to significantly increase the number of solid particles in the heterogeneous slag. A siliceous low-grade copper ore from Mpanda Mineral Field (MMF), located in south west Tanzania consisting of SiO2 (58.3%), Fe (10.4 %) and Cu (0.9 %) was initially subjected to selective dispersion-flocculation using sodium trisilicate (STS) as a dispersant and xanthan gum (XG) as a flocculant. Subsequently, the selectively flocculated fraction was floated using a collector combination of potassium ethyl and amyl xanthate (1:1) in the presence of poly-ethylene oxide (PEO) as a silica depressant, to get a copper concentrate. The mineralogical investigations confirmed that the MMF ore was mainly composed of quartz, chalcopyrite and pyrite. Adsorption studies indicated that the adsorption density of XG on MMF ore decreased with an increase in pH, while that of PEO was independent of pH. The adsorption isotherms of XG and PEO on MMF ore exhibited Langmuirian behaviour. The zeta potential studies of MMF ore indicated that the iso-electric point (IEP) was located at pH 2.6, presumably due to its high silica content. In the combined presence of XG and STS, the zeta potential of MMF ore became more negative, with an increase in the concentration of STS. However, in the presence of PEO, the zeta potential of MMF ore became less negative with an increase in the concentration of PEO beyond the IEP, without shifting the IEP. Selective dispersion-flocculation of MMF ore improved the flocculated chalcopyrite grade to 19.8 %, yielding a degree of flocculation and a maximum separation efficiency of 12.1 % and 85.7 % respectively, after three desliming stages in the presence of 30 ppm of STS and 30 ppm of XG. A copper concentrate of 29 % grade and 90 % recovery containing silica of 0.9 % grade and 1.7 % recovery was achieved by flotation of the selectively flocculated component, using PEO as a depressant for quartz. Production of oxygen on the moon can be achieved by reduction of lunar soil. One such reduction technology, hydrogen reduction, favours a high proportion of ilmenite in the feedstock. Ilmenite is present in lunar soil as a minor mineral phase, but it can be upgraded using electrostatic separation. This study presents the results of a preliminary investigation into the operating parameters and sensitivities of a free-fall electrostatic mineral separator for lunar applications. Samples of ballotini and ilmenite as well as simple binary mixtures of the two were tribocharged on copper and passed through a uniform electrostatic field. The field is varied to change the electrostatic force acting on the particles. The proportion of material reporting to the positive electrode collectors, negative electrode collectors or the central collector was measured to determine the separation performance. The data confirmed that the charge transferred from the tribocharger to each species is in agreement with the triboelectric series; ballotini was found to charge positively on copper and ilmenite negatively. Particle-particle contacts were dominant, however, resulting in a somewhat symmetrical particle distribution in the collectors. These findings indicate that the copper tribocharger design requires optimisation in order to substantially increase particle-wall contacts. Four binary mixtures with feed grades of ilmenite ranging from 5% to 20% were prepared and tested. This study found that a higher ilmenite head grade resulted in a higher concentrate grade (26.3% from a head grade of 20%) with low recovery (3.4%). In contrast, the lower feed grade resulted in a low concentrate grade but higher recovery. The mass yield of ilmenite was 1.4 times greater for the highest-grade feed than for the lowest. A subsequent study into the reprocessing of middling fraction found a nearly constant relationship between cumulative grade and recovery. "The effect of two refining slags (A: 1.0–1.8 CaO/Al2O3 ratio, 11–20 wt% SiO2; and B: 1.0–1.2 CaO/SiO2 ratio, 25–35 wt% Al2O3) on the inclusion morphology of a carbon structural steel (Q235B) was studied by controlling the balance between the steel and the refining slag at 1600ºC in a Si–Mo resistance laboratory furnace. The results showed that most of the inclusions in the molten steel balanced with slag A were formed by a lowmelting CaO–MgO–Al2O3–SiO2 system with a total oxygen content (T[O]) being fixed at 6–13 ppm. The inclusions in liquid steel balanced with the slag B were mostly formed by the CaO–MnO–Al2O3–SiO2 system, with T[O] controlled to 19–26 ppm. The overall size of the inclusions under balance conditions was higher in the steel reacted with the slag B than that reacted with slag A, with the latter showing more inclusions smaller than 3 um. In order to generate a large number of spherical CaO–MgO–Al2O3–SiO2 inclusions smaller than 3 ??m while decreasing the T[O] in the resulting steel, the composition of slag A should be used. This composition allowed improving the cleanliness of the slab, and is also advantageous for the castability of the molten steel. IntroductionThe sample used in this study was a typical carbon steel manufactured by CQ Steel. The galvanized, tinned, and plastic composite steel plates made of the original plates are used extensively for decorative panels, general dust pipes, drums, instrument cases, switchboxes, and train cars, among other uses. The target control composition is shown in Table I. The S and P contents are usually fixed during production below 0.020 and 0.025 wt%, respectively, with the aim of reducing longitudinal cracks on the slab surface."

Broken Hill Mines-1968, edited by M. Radmanovich and J. T. Woodcock, published by The Australian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, Melbourne, 613 pages. Price $A15. This volume, containing some 65 technical papers, was produced for the 1968 annual conference of the Australasian Institute held at Broken Hill to mark the 75th Anniversary of that Institute, founded at Broken Hill in 1893. That conference also coincided with the 85th Anniversary of the discovery of the Broken Hill mining field. This closely reflects the position in this country, where the Witwatersrand gold fields were discovered in 1886, and our South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy will in March, 1969 be celebrating the 75th Anniversary of the founding of the forerunners of our Institute. There is a comprehensive report of the geology of the Broken Hill area and the mineralogy of the ore body, and there are reports on the mining methods and the metallurgical procedures which have been developed over 85 years of operation of one of the great mining fields of the world. The value of most of the papers is enhanced by a large number of illustrations and photographs. An early section covers the academic and practical aspects of rock mechanics, prospecting, and exploration techniques are described in some detail. A third of the volume is devoted to mining, with papers on 26 aspects. The breadth of the coverage gives an indication of much specialized development, research, and consequent maturity in all departments. The detailed treatment of metallurgical aspects such as sizings of individual mineral particles throughout the milling stages and the development of an on-stream analysis system for lead will commend this volume to the specialist. The committee responsible for the production of this volume, which brings together much information previously only to be found after searching through numerous publications, are to be congratulated on a well produced comprehensive review of many aspects of the mining and metallurgical fields. "*Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of BSc (Mining Engineering) degreeSynopsisLiqhobong Mining Development Company (LMDC) has been experiencing problems with boulders after blasting where the fragment sizes exceed the maximum of 800 mm as per mine standard. As a result, the mine has employed various methods to improve the fragmentation. The goal is to produce a run-of-mine (ROM) feed that does not choke the crusher and cause delays in production. In order to achieve this goal, fragmentation distribution within the fines and coarse envelope must be optimized through effective planning of blasting activities and accurate execution.The mine determined the fines-coarse envelope within which the entire crushing system can handle fragments using Split Desktop software. It is expected that both the predicted and actual fragmentation curves lie within that envelope for optimal fragmentation. The Kuz-Ram model with blast design parameters of 2.6 m for burden, 2.8 m for spacing, and 127 mm hole diameter was used to predict the fragmentation. The results show that the blast design parameters may need altering to achieve optimum fragmentation. Furthermore, the execution of the drilling and blasting may be the cause of the fragmentation problems. The mean fragmentation size (X50) differs greatly, unlike the uniformity index (n)s values which are relatively close to each other (0.6 to 2.2). The mean squared error (MSE) values have a large range. A proposed solution is a modified burden, spacing, and hole diameter. It is concluded that blast design parameters need to be reviewed in order to obtain correct predictions. IntroductionFragmentation has an impact on the mine production cycle which comprises, inter alia, drilling, blasting, loading, hauling, and crushing. Correct fragmentation as set by the plant design is important as it reduces the time lost due to secondary blasting and/or loading difficulties. In this paper we analyse blast results at Liqhobong Mining Development Company (LMDC) in Lesotho for a period of six months. This project was undertaken to observe the trends from the blasts and to identify whether any discrepancies exist in the overall blast information. The period under study included 16 blasts."

The beneficiation of heavy metal oxides, such as iron ore, is usually performed with heavy medium separation in cyclones, static baths and lately with Larcodems. Atomized ferrosilicon is most suitable as a heavy medium at densities above 3600 kg/m3 whereas a mixture of milled and atomized ferrosilicon is suitable at densities below 3600 kg/m3. When operating a beneficiation plant at densities higher than 3600 kg/m3 the quality of the ferrosilicon particles is an important factor that influences the control of the beneficiation process. Therefore, it is important to know how the rheology would be affected by the ferrosilicon quality as it also influences the control of the process at these elevated densities. Background The Kumba Resources Sishen Iron Ore Mine in South Africa produces 26.5 Mt iron ore per annum from its beneficiation plant. The ore body consists mainly of laminated and massive type hematite ore that is crushed down to ?90mm before being beneficiated by means of a combination of Wemco drums, Larcodem and dense medium cyclone separators. The need for higher densities When the percentage of high-density gangue2 is higher than normal in the run-of-mine (ROM), a higher separation density is necessary to produce a product to specification. Certain ore types of this quality in the Sishen reserves require a separating density higher than 4000 kg/m3, whereas densities would normally average 3600 kg/m3 when beneficiating ores of normal high-density gangue content. Sink and float tests conducted on the ROM material at Sishen revealed some interesting characteristics. In the waste fraction, (density < 3600 kg/m3) it was found that the %Fe was <21% (Fig. 1). Similarly, for the product fraction (density >3000 kg/m3), the percentage Fe varied between 35% and 67.2%. The bulk of the material (88%) actually had a density greater than 4000 kg/m3 and a Fe content that varied between 63% and 67.2%. At a density interval of 3600 to 4000 kg/m3, the Fe content varied from 37% to 60% with an average of 45%.

IMFA Group is the largest producer of Charge chrome not only in India but also in Asia. This Group has plants situated at Therubali and at Choudwar. They also have a Thermal power plant at Choudwar which not only caters to the power requirement of Choudwar plant but also supplies power to Therubali. The plants are fed for Chromite ore through the captive mines namely Nuasahi Chromite mines (40.47 Ha) , Bangur Chromite mines(37.34Ha), Sukinda chromite mines (116.76 Ha), Mahagiri Chromite Mine(73.777 Ha) and Chingudipal Chromite mines (26.62 Ha). Nuasahi Chromite Mine, which is situated in Keonjhar district, is an underground mine and is based upon best technological advancements in the industry. The underground mining operation is certified under ISO-9002, ISO-14001and OHSAS 18001. This not only shows the concern for the quality, environment but also for the health of the employees. The Nuashahi is the first chromite mine to backfill the opencast excavations created during the last 50 years and carry out the production from underground area below the opencast workings. This paper deals with the state of art technology of sub-level open stopping in thin ore bodies. The under-ground mine openings was started in the year 1997. In next four years the production of chromite from underground was started.(2001). At present the mine is in a good shape with several running stopes. Today it is producing around 10,000 Mt per month of chromite. The development of the mine is carried out with an average of 200 mtr per month of tunneling. The mine is having a mechanical ventilator having a capacity of24000 M3 per hour at 50mm water gauge, thus feeding sufficient air for the persons working in underground. The mine is being dewatered through a most modern positive suction sump, having a capacity of 500 cum and operated with 120 HP pumps. After commissioning of this sump in the year 2003, the mine has taken a quantum jump in production with remarkable saving in power consumption.

In this paper, four cyanide-utilising bacteria strains were isolated from a gold mine tailings pond, in the Hexi gold mine (Shandong), China. Based on the analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequence, four strains were identified as Aeromonas hydrophila strain C1, Bacillus mojavensis strain C3, Shewanella oneidensis strain C2, and Aeromonas media strain C4. Based on the cyanide detoxification efficiencies results of the four strains, Bacillus mojavensis C3 had the highest detoxification rate and was selected to assess its efficiency to detoxify cyanide in gold mine tailings at different pH (9.5, 10.5, and 11.6) using cyanide as the sole carbon and nitrogen sources. Strain C3 was capable of detoxifying 46.5mg/L of cyanide-containing gold mine tailings at all tested pH ranges at 30oC, 196 rpm after 15 d. The amounts of cyanide detoxified were 87.5%, 84.1%, and 73.5% at initial pH 9.5, 10.5, and 11.6, respectively. The highest cyanide detoxification was observed at pH 9.5. The viable cells growths in the samples were 5.7E+09CFU/mL, 4.9E+09CFU/mL, and 2.7E+09CFU/mL at pH 9.5, 10.5, and 11.6, respectively. Free ammonia concentrations were observed as a byproduct of the biodetoxification process. The residual ammonia concentration in the sample was observed at 0.35 mg/L, 0.33 mg/L, and 0.62 mg/L at pH 9.5, 10.5, and 11.6, respectively. The highest residual ammonia concentration was noticed at pH 11.6. The amount of cyanide removed by mixed culture strains C3 and C4 was 94.6% and showed a residual free ammonia concentration of 2.6mg/L, as biodetoxification byproduct after 120 h. The pure culture Bacillus mojavensis strain C3 and its mixed culture strains exhibited higher potential to detoxify cyanide-containing gold mine tailings at alkaline pH values and could be cultivated to detoxify gold mine effluents at large-scale. The Annual General Meeting of the Branch was held in the Witbank Golf Club on Thursday, 28th August, 1969 at 5.00 p.m. Mr C. G. Sowry (Chairman) was in the Chair. There were also present: Ten Members: Messrs J. Meintjes (Vice-Chairman), J. E. van Aswegen, A. C. Hofmeyr, I. Botha, B. F. v. d. Merwe, C. H. Coxon, R. Canny, R. C. J. Goode, A. Bain, G. E. Carlyon. Six Associate Members: Messrs B. T. Hosking, R. E. Powell, W. Weber, T. Bulloch, E. J. Jackson, P. J. Muller. Fourteen Visitors. Total Present: 31. The Chairman declared the meeting open and extended a welcome to all visitors including Mr R. C. J. Goode, President of the Institute. MINUTES OF PREVIOUS GENERAL MEETING The Minutes of the General Meeting held on the 26th June, 1969, were read and adopted. CHAIRMAN&apos;S REPORT The Chairman presented a report outlining the activities of the Branch during the past year. Membership of the local Branch had increased from 80 to 99 during the year. DECLARATIONOF OFFICEBEARERS The Chairman announced that owing to his transfer out of the Witbank area, he was unable to accept the nomination as Chairman for a further year of office. The outgoing committee had elected Mr J. Meintjes Chairman and Mr A. Bain Vice-Chairman for the ensuing year. Mr J. Meintjes then took the chair. Mr J. Meintjes thanked Mr C. G. Sowry for his successful steering of the Branch during its period of inauguration. ELECTION OF COMMITTEE MEMBERS The Chairman then read the Scrutineers&apos; Report and declared the following eight members elected as Committee Members for the 1969-1970 year: Messrs I. Botha, A. W. Human beings have been dependent on metals and alloys for livelihoods since time immemorial. In fact, there is irrefutable evidence that successful ancient civilizations achieved supremacy over their environments through the mastery of metals and alloys (Miller, 1995; Mtetwa, 2022). Over time, metals and alloys have evolved to become ubiquitous engineering materials indispensable to mankind, with applications in industrial and residential infrastructure, agriculture, energy generation and storage, transportation and communication systems, and manufacturing, among others (Elshkaki et al., 2018; Watari et al., 2021). Population growth, technological developments, and increase in urbanization and industrialization are all intricately linked to the intensity of use of metals and alloys. With up to 5 billion people estimated to live in urban areas by 2030 (Armstrong, 2009), the demand for metals and alloys will inevitably increase in order to satisfy the increased demand for infrastructure, machinery, and other human needs (Elshkaki et al., 2018; Watari et al., 2021). According to LePan (2022), urbanization and growth of mega-cities will increase the demand for metals and alloys, such as nickel, steel, aluminium, and copper by 116%, 50%, 57%, and 26%, respectively, between 2019 and 2035. Naturally, the production of metals and alloys from natural ores, secondary resources, and/or a combination of both, to meet this increased demand will invariably lead to the increase in generation of deleterious emissions in the form of wastes. In fact, mining and metallurgical wastes currently constitute the world’s largest anthropogenic streams by mass, often containing a high concentration of elements and compounds that can cause potential damage to natural ecosystems and humans (Hudson-Edwards et al., 2011; Lottermoser, 2011; Matinde et al., 2018; Seetharaman et al., 2022). Obviously, society’s heavy reliance on new mineral resources to drive the emerging energy transition entails that the legacy of these waste streams will continue unabated for the near-foreseeable future. The scarcity of high-grade mineral reserves, coupled with deliberate efforts to solve the anthropogenic circularity conundrum, therefore introduces a high level of urgency in the metal extraction industry to develop nascent and more eco-friendly processes and technologies. Integrating circular economy principles based on intentional configurations of circular industrial ecosystems in order to maintain the value of materials and resources in the economy for as long as possible is widely accepted as a practical approach to mitigating the negative externalities imposed by

"A hydrometallurgical route was developed to extract metals such as gold, silver, copper, and selenium from anode slime from Sarcheshmeh Copper Complex in Iran. For the extraction of copper by leaching, the anode slime was heated and stirred with 4 M sulphuric acid in the presence of oxygen. Optimal conditions for recovery of copper were temperature 80°C, mixing time 5 hours, and oxygen flow rate 2 L/min, resulting in a copper recovery of 94.47%. Silver and selenium were dissolved by leaching anode slime from which the copper had been removed with nitric acid. For gold extraction, anode slime was heated with aqua regia at 90°, and the gold then extracted with 2-ethyl-hexanol at a concentration of 0.5 M and phase ratio of 4. The extract was then stripped with soda solution at pH=10.5 and a phase ratio of 5. Finally, gold was recovered by precipitation with oxalic acid at a ratio of mass to volume 10 g/L. Total gold recovery was 80%. IntroductionDuring the electrorefining of copper, some metals are accumulated in the byproduct anode slime, which is an important source for recycling and recovery of these metals (Petkova, 1994). In this paper, a hydrometallurgical route is described for the recovery of precious metals from copper anode slime of Sarcheshmeh Copper Complex, which is located in southeastern Iran .Copper anode slime is black or gray powder with a particle size less than 200 mesh. Approximately 2 to 20 kg of anode slime is produced per ton of copper cathode. The slime is characterized by higher amount of Ag, Se, Pb, and Cu compared to other metals and a very low Au content (Khaleghi and Ghader, 2013).The copper anode slimes are composed of 11.69% selenium, 3.93% copper, 5.26% silver, 0.13% gold, and 45% barite, plus lead, tellurium, antimony, sulphur, and silica with small amounts of nickel, iron, zinc, and bismuth. Gold is one of the most important noble metals due to its wide applications in industry and economic importance, so recovery of gold from slime is more appealing than that of other metals. According to the World Gold Council (2013), the demand for gold has increased during the last decade. This increase is due not only to the increasing demands of the jewellery market, but also to the increasing demand for gold in industrial as well as medical applications (Ranjbar et al., 2014)."

M J Martinson (Fellow) There is everywhere a lamentable dearth of quantitative information on occupational factors affecting the health and safety of mineworkers, and as the authors point out in their introduction underground lighting is one of the factors which has received little attention in South Africa prior to this welcome paper. Since the authors are to some extent pioneering, it is perhaps inevitable that the paper should raise more questions than it answers, but nevertheless it provides a provisional yardstick against which the need for, and success of, remedial action may be judged. Before commenting in detail on a few aspects of the paper it may be worthwhile to summarize the statutory provisions relating to underground lighting, contained in Chapter 15 of the Regulations promulgated in terms of the Mines and Works Act 27 of 1956. Chapter 15 is entitled `Lighting, Safety Lamps and Contraband&apos;, but in the context of the present paper only four simple regulations need be noted: firstly, no person shall work or travel in an unilluminated part of a mine unless he carries a light ; secondly, adequate stationary lights shall be provided at stations and certain other localities in shafts, winzes and places used for winding; thirdly, mechanically propelled conveyances shall be provided with an effective bright light shining in the direction of travel; and fourthly, moving machinery to which personnel have access shall be illuminated so as to be clearly visible. In all four regulations the standard of lighting to be provided is wholly subjective, and under these circumstances the wide inter- and intra-mine variations in light intensity disclosed by the study are hardly unexpected. Nevertheless the data presented in the authors&apos; Table I raise three points (1) Is there any evidence that the 19 mines visited during the survey are representative of the 45-50 large gold mines in South Africa, or that the shafts selected are representative of the respective mines? Mine managers would scarcely be human were they not to offer better lit working places for the survey; perhaps the use of a scaling factor (e.g. tonnes or transit mineworkers per shift, kilowatts, etc.) for each working place might have helped to put the figures in perspective. (2) Looking at two of the more numerous - and probably important - of the ten working places included in the survey, i.e. stations and tips, one is struck by the marked. skewness of both intensity distributions (with higher frequencies at the lower intensities) and the abrupt cut-off in both cases just short of pitch darkness. Thus, of the 45 meaned readings recorded at 26 tips no less than 19 fall in the lowest range of 0,1-0,9 1m/ft2, with but one tip in total darkness; of 46 readings on 26 stations, 7 fall in the lowest range and none is in total dark-&apos;1 ness. Although a light with an intensity in the range 0,1-0,9 1m/ft2 may satisfy the regulations, it is certainly arguable that in some situations it may be safer to have no light at all. (3) In view of the skewness referred to above, one wonders how meaningful are the `total average light intensities for (the gold mining) industry&apos; quoted in Table I, which the authors compare with illumina¬tion levels found in other countries. Looking at tips again, one notes that 34 out of 45 meaned intensity readings fall below the `total average&apos; for tips, and only 10 exceed it. From this it may be concluded that a few well-lit working places included in a `total average&apos; may conceal a plethora in Stygian gloom. In their discussion the authors make fleeting reference to the effect of underground lighting on productivity and accident rates, without however quoting any South African experience in this regard. Intuitively it seems highly likely that better lighting (in the widest sense) would improve productivity and reduce accidents, and of course it is in these areas that the mining industry might seek economic justification for providing better lighting. It is all the more regrettable therefore that these factors were not studied simultaneously with the present investigation, especially at the Psychological Division of the Human Sciences Laboratory has recently published a study on underground accidents in the gold mining industry without making any reference whatsoever to lighting as a causal factor. In the event neither of the two studies enables us to make an economic appreciation of the situation, and this seems to be a classic example of a situation where some dovetailing of research effort would have greatly increased the useful return. On the effect of lighting on accidents, it may be noted that in 1939 Mickel presented some very interesting statistics to the Mine Managers Association of the Transvaal2, on the improvement in accident rates which followed the random issue of electric cap lamps to native mineworkers in the Hercules Section of E.R.P.M. the previous year. Based on a 12 month trial period in which 250 000 shifts were worked with carbide lamps and (contemporaneously) 307 000 shifts with cap lamps, the incidence of major accidents (at least one day in hospital among men using carbide lamps was 1,15 accidents per 1000 shifts, while the incidence of minor accidents (requiring dressing only) was 11,52 per 1 000 shifts. The corresponding figures for men using cap lamps were 0,79 and 7,31 accidents per 1 000 shifts respectively, representing a reduction of over 30 per cent in both major and minor accidents. While these figures are obviously dated - only men using cap lamps were issued with hard hats, for instance - they do indicate a need for similar research today.

"SynopsisCo-pyrolysis of four biomass samples (hardwood chip, softwood chip, pinewood chip, and sugarcane bagasse) with an inertinite-rich medium rank C South African coal was investigated. Proximate and ultimate analyses of the chars prepared using a heating rate of 10°C/min up to 1100°C in a nitrogen atmosphere were used to compare the properties of the biomass and the coal chars. Similar gross calorific values (28.5–29.1 MJ/kg) for the woody biomass-coal blended chars were observed, which were slightly higher than that of the coal char sample (26.5 MJ/kg). CO2 surface areas of the chars of the woody biomass samples (328.1–329.4 m2/g) and of the blends (238.5–271.5 m2/g) were higher than that of the coal char sample (94.2 m2/g). Thermogravimetric (TG), differential thermal analyses (DTG), and calculated weighted averaged TG curves indicated that the influence of the biomass on the pyrolysis rate of the coal is small and vice versa. The CO2-producing reactions of the coal were slightly enhanced during co-pyrolysis.IntroductionCoal utilization has led to rising concerns about adverse impacts on the environment (global warming) caused by toxic gases (H2S, SOx, NOx, and CO2) and remaining waste. Biomass is considered to be CO2-neutral with regard to the greenhouse gas balance, and is regarded as a renewable source that assists in reducing CO2 emissions when compared with coal (McGowan, 1991; McKendry, 2002). Biomass currently makes up approximately 14% of the world’s energy sources (McGowan, 1991; McKendry, 2002). Coal combustion and gasification are prominent processes in South Africa (in producing synthesis gas and energy) due to the abundance of coal in the country. Some of South Africa’s coal resources are, however, high in ash content and also are inertinite-rich, which renders them more difficult to use industrially than vitrinite-rich low-ash coal (Jeffrey, 2005; Strydom et al., 2011). There is a need to investigate the properties and behaviour of the inertinite-rich high-ash South African coals and especially their interaction with local biomass sources. The gasification process occurs through various stages, of which pyrolysis of the char residue forms an integral part (Bunt and Waanders, 2009). Currently, particular interest is shown in the co-utilization of coal and biomass to produce synthesis gas via the gasification process (Usón et al., 2010; McGowan, 1991; McKendry, 2002). Investigating the co-pyrolysis of the South African coal and local biomass material is thus the first step in evaluating the use of local biomass sources for co-gasification purposes."

International Solvent Extraction Conference 1971 ISEC &apos;71, which will be held in The Hague, The Netherlands, from 18th to 23rd April, 1971, is being sponsored by the Society of Chemical Industry in association with the Koninklijk Instituut van Ingenieurs, the Institution of Chemical Engineers and the Koninklijke Nederlandse Chemische Vereniging. The Working Party on Distillation, Absorption and Extraction of the European Federation of Chemical Engineering is participating in the Conference, which is the 101st event of the Federation. The scope of the Conference covers the entire science and technology of liquid-liquid extraction as applied in all branches of industry. Thus sessions will cover both chemical and chemical engineering aspects of the subject as applied to both inorganic and organic solutes. The conference aims to bring together academic and industrial workers in the field from all parts of the world. The programme includes over 100 papers by authors in 26 countries. Full details of the papers, together with registration forms, are contained in a detailed programme, copies of which are now available from: ISEC &apos;71, 14 Belgrave Square, London, S.W.1, U.K. Department of Mining and Mineral Technology of the Royal School of Mines Postgraduate Courses Technical and economic challenges facing the minerals industry, together with progressive change in methods and equipment, increasingly necessitate re-training of experienced professional engineers who aim for top places. In order to meet this need, this Department has for some years run one year M.Sc. courses. Engineers, often sponsored by their employers, have a choice of three courses which are respectively devoted to mining, applied rock mechanics or mineral process design. The course in Mining is divided into five subjects, which are treated from the business management point of view. It is intended to provide middle management with a knowledge of those techniques that are required by the mining engineering function in the preparation of modern projects. The course in Mineral Process Design provides a systematic use of mineral sciences, engineering and economics for ore testing and process design, so as best to balance the technical and financial requirements for specific mineral resources. The course in Engineering Rock Mechanics is designed to provide a specialized training in the engineering applications of rock mechanics for engineers and geologists, so that they are equipped to treat a wide variety of problems in mining and civil engineering. Prerequisite qualifications are a good first degree in a related subject, plus industrial experience: The rewards include an M.Sc. of the University of London and the Diploma of the Imperial College (DIC). South Africa depends to a considerable measure on the exploitation of mineral reserves and the processing of these minerals. One of the prime requirements for the mining and metallurgical industry to continue in this vital role is access to sufficient energy in a suitable form. Hence, four important questions are discussed: Does South Africa have sufficient energy for the processing of its minerals and metals! Will the cost of energy allow South Africa&apos;s minerals and metals to compete on world markets? Can mining and metallurgical processes become more energy-efficiency Can mining and metallurgical processes be adapted to the various forms of energy that may have to be utilized in the future? It is concluded that about 26 per cent of the extractable reserves of coal would be required in the mining and processing of 50 per cent of South Africa&apos;s reserves of gold, platinum-group metals, copper, iron, ferrochromium, and ferromanganese. However, the reducing agents required exceed the extractable reserves but not the total estimates of mineable in situ resources of metallurgical coal and anthracitic coal. Even under the severe constraint that coal could become virtually the sole source of energy, only about three-quarters of the extractable reserves of coal would have been consumed by the year 2025. The reasonably assured resources of uranium metal that can be recovered at less than $80 per kilogram are considerable and, at current conversion efficiencies to electricity, are equivalent to one-fifth of the extractable reserves of coal. The rate of exportation of energy in the form of U30. was about five times that of coal in 1978. It is pointed out that the price of energy has a direct effect on the competitiveness of metals, and, although constituting only a small proportion of the selling price of precious metals, it represents a significant proportion of the selling price of copper and metals recovered from oxide ores. The scope for the conservation of energy appears to be greater in the extraction and conversion of primary energy-carriers to electrical energy than in other mining or metallurgical fields. Provided that alternative sources of energy can be converted to electrical energy, they can be applied to the mining and metallurgical industries. The decision as to which type of energy should be used in specific mining and metallurgical situations is complicated, and is likely to be subjected to closer scrutiny than in the past. The hope is expressed that the tentative conclusions reached will give rise to more-quantitative analyses from those qualified to undertake such an exercise. Inevitably, the questions asked at the outset give rise to more questions, and the more interesting ones are posed in the context of each conclusion.

The Sukari project, which is owned by Centamin Egypt Ltd, is located in southern Egypt, 770 km south of Cairo but close to the Red Sea. The project is the first new gold development in Egypt and was commissioned in the middle of 2009. In 2007, Centamin purchased the CIL plant from the Kori Kollo mine in Bolivia. This plant was originally designed to treat 6.5 Mtpa of oxide ore. The Sukari deposit contains an oxide zone close to surface with a thick zone of mixed oxide and sulphides below this. The sulphides contain relatively coarse pyrite and arsenopyrite with fine <10 µm gold inclusions. Eventually, the sulphide ore will be mined from underground. Metplant Engineering Pty Ltd, a subsidiary of Bateman Engineering Pty Ltd was contracted to design modifications and additions to the Kori Kollo plant to enable it to treat the Sukari ores. The plant was designed to treat the three ore types in stages. Throughput was set to 4 Mtpa, dueto Sukari ore being harder, at a head grade of 1.7 g/t to produce 200 000 oz of gold. The oxide circuit was based on the use of the Kori Kollo plant and the difference with mixed ore was that the oxide circuit would treat flotation tailings rather than ore. This circuit has a leach capacity of 26 000 m3 and residence time of 24 hrs The main feature of the upgraded mixed ore plant was the addition of a flotation circuit to produce a concentrate which would be reground and treated in a separate leach and elution circuit. Ore is crushed in a gyratory crusher and the comminution circuit uses a conventional SABC producing a product with a P80 of 150 microns. The throughput of 580 tph of oxide ore and 500tph of mixed ore was set to match the mills from Kori Kollo, with the addition of the pebble crusher to accommodate the more competent Sukari ore. The flotation circuit comprises a single rougher circuit to maximize recovery. The concentrate is thickened prior to regrinding which is carried out in a tower mill and two SMD mills operating in series. The final product, with a P80 of 12 microns, from the regrind circuit is leached in a CIL circuit with a total capacity of 2 550 m3. Gold is recovered through a conventional pressure Zadra circuit. Tailings from both circuits report to separate tailings thickeners and are pumped to a tailings storage facility. The circuit is designed to maximize the recovery of water. The project lies in one of the driest deserts in the world and a feature of the operation is the use of sea water from the Red Sea. This water is pumped 25 km from the coast.
