The decrease in quality of Australian iron ore, coupled with the demand for more efficient energy use, necessitates closer monitoring and optimisation of process conditions for iron ore sinter production. Sinter properties are correlated with the mineralogical content and traditionally, quality control has relied on methods such as Fe2+ determination, point counting via optical microscopy and automated electron beam techniques such as QEMSCAN; these can have a typical turnaround time of several days between sampling and reporting of results. As well, there is additional uncertainty around quantifying some of the complex mineralogical phases in sinter such as silico-ferrite of calcium and aluminium (SFCA) and SFCA-I, which are key phases influencing sinter quality. There is a clear need for the implementation of alternative analytical methodologies that offer a turnaround in hours or even minutes to provide information to accurately maintain production conditions.X-ray diffraction (XRD) is a technique widely used for the quantitative mineralogical phase analysis (QPA) of ores and processed materials in the iron ore industry. Partial least squares regression (PLSR) analysis methods have recently been suggested as an indicator of sinter Fe2+ content from powder XRD data without the need for rigorous and often time-consuming mineralogical analysis by the operator. In this study we provide results from the implementation of PLSR to predict the strength of iron ore sinter. Results are sourced from a well-constrained data set comprising strength properties (as quantified by a tumble index (TI)) from a series of compact laboratory test samples. Project cost control procedures and computer systems have enjoyed a successful and simple relationship over the past decade, thanks primarily to the proliferation of portable computers or PC's. Prior to the introduction of this technology, project control was largely a manual and somewhat onerous task of historical data compilations, with little time available for dynamic forecasting, staged planning, or pre-emptive cost control. Automated systems developed during this era were resident on "Heavy Iron" or mainframe computers and were expensive to maintain and operate. Use of these early systems was limited to large engineering, construction, and industrial concerns with the economies of scale and funding required for their successful application. Systems were either designed for critical path analysis or task scheduling, but rarely integrated with the other, much less cost control.

A method is described for the rapid and effective production of polished section mounts of ore and mineral particulates to the standards required for automated image analysis. This requires mounting without segregation of particles by mass or density, and it is also preferable to avoid having particles in contact so that they can be recognised as individuals. To achieve this, the particle samples are first split to an appropriate degree in a rotary riffle, and the sub-sample mechanically diluted and thoroughly mixed with an inert filler of the same size range as the particles. Just sufficient epoxy resin is added to make the mixture fluid. During setting, the ore particles are mechanically supported by the inert filler particles, thus maintaining the particles in a random three-dimensional distribution. A rapid two-stage grinding process, based on the successive use of 600 mesh silicon carbide and 1200 mesh (10 um) corundum on cast iron plates, is followed by three stages of mechanical diamond polishing on cloth laps. Hand polishing is entirely avoided, as is the use of papers.

In stopes of the 2000- and 2150-ft. levels in the North mine section of North Broken Hill Limited, whence a substantial proportion of the company's production is being drawn, and especially in stopes which involve the portion known as the Northern orebody, occurs it light-coloured friable porous material which represents average grade ore from which the lead and zinc minerals, and certain gangue constituents, have been largely or wholly removed by leaching. The 2000- and 2150-ft. levels lie, respectively, 1550 and 1700 ft. below extreme base of the pre-mine oxidized zone. Composition of the cellular product shows it to be supergene. Operating experience with the pilot Lurgi carbonization plant at Morwell showed that under conventional operating conditions, although the thermal efficiency of the plant was very' high, the physical quality of the char produced was extremely poor. By variation of operating conditions to produce the slow drying rate developed by the laboratory research at the University of Melbourne, an improvement in the size of the char was achieved. A similar approach in the carbonization stage where severe breakage of the briquettes still occurred was not possible due to insufficient control over the heating in this stage. Theoretical analysis of the heat exchange process has shown that severe heating of the briquettes entering the carbonizer is a characteristic of the Lurgi system and cannot be controlled by modified operation. The plant has been closed down for reconstruction of the heating system to enable it to be used to produce hard char.INTRODUCTIONAn experimental carbonization plant was operated at the Morwell Works of the 'Gas and Fuel Corporation from November 1958 until July 1959. This plant was built as a pilot plant by the Corporation to designs supplied by the Lurgi Gesellschaft fur Warmetechnik and had the nominal capacity to carbonize 25 tons of brown coal briquettes and to produce 11 tons of char per day. When an aqueous suspension of pyrite and manganese ore reacts with oxygen, manganese is dissolved by the ferrous sulphate and sulphuric acid produced by the oxidation of pyrite. The kinetics of certain steps in the overall reaction were studied. A rate equation for the oxidation of ferrous sulphate by gaseous oxygen was derived for the temperature range from 1000 to 200° C. An exact rate equation for the production of ferrous ion from pyrite could not be established but it was shown that the temperature, oxygen pressure, pyrite surface area, and the reduction of ferric ion by pyrite are important. A rate equation was derived for the reaction of manganese dioxide with ferrous sulphate. A major facfor controlling the rate was whether or not ferric oxide was formed by hydrolysis at the manganese dioxide surface.It was shown that if hydrolysis was prevented the factor cpntrolling the rate of the overall reaction ,was the rate of production of ferrous ion, and little ferrous ion was oxidised by oxygen. When hydrolysis of iron did occur, the overall rate was not a simplefunction of anyone factor and much ferrous ion was wasted by oxidation with oxygen.INTRODUCTIONIn another paper (Cornelius and Woodcock, 1958) the results of the reaction of an aqueous suspension of a manganese ore and pyrite with oxygen are reported. Investigation of the "whole-rock" major element geochemistry of the Broken Hill lodes and of the rocks immediately enclosing them has been carried out on the full lengths of 19 diamond drill cores transecting B lode,A lode, No. 1 lens and Lead lode in The Zinc Corporation Ltd.-New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited, at the southern end of the line of lode.It appears that the abundances of all of the principal "non-sulphide components" - Si02, AI2O3, Ti02, CaO, MgO, MnO, K2O, TiO2 and P203 - are closely tied to the incidence of sulphide. The well-known direct relationship of calcium and manganese with the incidence of sulphide is confirmed, and to this is now added the pairing sulpnide-phosphate, which is particularly welldeveloped in the zinc lodes. It is also now shown that there is a clear inverse relationship between sulphide on one hand and AI2O3, Ti02 , MgO, and K2O on the other.Total Fe-which is an important constituent of both sulphide and non-sulphide-appears to occur in essentially similar amounts in ore and enclosing materials. The incidence of Na20, while generally depressed in ore, issomewhat erratic and equivocal. Si02 and sulphide usually show a highly systematic inverse relationship-a feature stemming inevitably from their being by far the two most abundant, and hence two co-dominant, materials ofthe ores.These features of elemental abundance are interpreted in the context of seaflooor hydrothermal ore deposition to give some insight into the amount and nature of detrital and of chemical sedimentation, the formation and accumulation of different clay minerals, the chemical and physical characteristics of the bottom waters, and the reasons for the comparative paucity of iron in the Broken Hill lode.

Gold in the stibnite veins of Costerfield, Victoria, was described in 1922 1, prior to any mineragraphic examination, as (a) free yellow gold (b) free rusty gold and (c) combined gold. The free yellow gold occurs in quartz and will amalgamate with mercury. The free gold of dull, rusty or copper-red colour occurs in massive stibnite and has been stated to resist amalgamation with mercury. The dull colour is only skin deep and the colour is bright when the rusty gold is scratched. The appearance of the rusty gold is spongy or cellular and it generally occurs near small cavities in the stibnite. The suggestion that the cellular character indicated the removal of a certain amount of stibnite leaving a residue of se.condary gold cannot be sustained.It now appears probable that the rusty gold is formed by the primary dissociation of a gold antimonide and is distinct in origin from the normal yellow gold which is deposited with quartz or stibnite from auriferous mineral solutions.The combined gold referred to in the earlier paper was the gold contained in the stibnite as revealed by assay. Such gold was at first thought to be either dissolved in the stibnite or else present as free interstitial particles too minute for observation in transmitted light in thin sections.Subsequent examination of numerous polished,surfaces disclosed the small particles of gold occurring in the grain boundaries in aggregates of fine grained stibnite 2. The assumption that all the gold in the stibnite, as revealed by assay, occurred in this way is now known to be incorrect, because limited amounts of a gold antimonide have been found in the veins.

Gold in sulfide ores is associated predominantly with sulfide minerals and occurs as both microscopic and submicroscopic particles. In non-refractory sulfide ores, gold occurs mainly as coarse- and medium-grained particles. Minute inclusions and submicroscopic gold usually account for a minor portion. In contrast, gold in refractory sulfide ores occurs mainly as minute particles and submicroscopic gold, and microscopic gold usually accounts for an insignificant portion. In gold ores containing carbonaceous material, the preg-robbing nature of carbonaceous material may impose challenges on gold extraction and cause gold losses. To extract gold from refractory sulfide ores, the ore needs to be finely ground and preoxidation is often required. Sulfide host minerals must first be oxidised to create a porous structure through which the cyanide leach solution can penetrate to reach the colloidal gold particles. The oxidation is traditionally achieved by roasting, autoclaving or bacterial oxidation. In carbonaceous sulfide ores exhibiting a preg-robbing nature, the carbonaceous material needs to be treated by roasting, autoclaving or other means to minimise the preg-robbing effect. As a predictive and troubleshooting tool, the gold deportment study plays an important role in gold metallurgy. It determines the deportment of gold in an ore or mill product and identifies the mineralogical issues that may affect or may have affected gold extraction. The information acquired from a gold deportment study can be used to assist in process selection, flow sheet development, recovery improvement and reagent optimisation.CITATION:Zhou, J, 2013. Low-sulphidation epithermal gold deposits, which form in quasi-hydrostatic convective hydrothermal systems, frequently contain chalcedony within high-grade ore, which has been interpreted to be a crystallisation product of amorphous silica. To deposit amorphous silica rather than another silica polymorph at elevated temperatures requires very high silica concentrations, because of its relatively high solubility. Only extreme boiling caused by decompression followed by wall rock heating upon structural dilation, can achieve this. As gold deposits with amorphous silica it must be produced by the same mechanism, particularly since extreme boiling is also a very effective mechanism for gold deposition. Recent developments support this view; the first is the detailed isotopic analysis of chalcedony-bearing high-grade veins reported from Hishikari, Japan, in which oxygen isotope results are indicative of extreme boiling and hydrogen isotopes indicate initial deposition of amorphous silica. The second is the finding of chalcedony within geothermal pipe work in the Rotokawa geothermal field in New Zealand. Rotokawa is a comparatively hot field (335¦C at depth); hence separation of the steam-water mixture produced by the wells is undertaken at a comparatively high temperature (220¦C) to minimise down-stream silica scaling. Even so, silica scale, some of which is chalcedony, does occur, under similar conditions to that in low-sulphidation epithermal deposits. Evidence of chalcedony forming under these conditions, reinforces the interpretation that decompressive boiling is the main deposition mechanism for gold in low-sulphidation epithermal deposits. It is possible that there is sufficient drop in temperature due to decompression that, at least initially, the silica deposits directly as chalcedony. Low-sulphidation epithermal gold deposits that do not contain chalcedony, such as those in the Philippines, may form at temperatures too high for chalcedony to directly form. The recognition of decompressive boiling as the main deposition mechanism in low-sulphidation epithermal deposits means that exploration can focus on zones where this has taken place by combining paleohydrological reconstruction and structural geology.

In-pit crushing and conveying (IPCC) is being increasingly considered as an alternative to traditional truck-shovel mining methods. The move towards IPCC is driven by a number of factors including the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the availability of skilled labour and the need to increase extraction rates to levels that present significant challenges to traditional methods.When considering the relative performance of IPCC and truck-shovel methods, the outcome can be inadvertently impacted by either the use of different simulation approaches, or techniques that do not adequately model the processes in sufficient detail.A simulation approach is proposed that models both IPCC and truck-shovel using the same software platform and is capable of functioning at a wide range of resolutions from life-of-mine scale through to second-by-second asset tracking level. The simulation framework also holds models of processing equipment and hence the mining simulations can be extended to gauge the impact on downstream plant.The approach, known as mine-process operational simulation (MPOS), can be tailored to the level of information available and hence the type of study required, ie order of magnitude, prefeasibility, feasibility, or detailed design.Using information from block models and a range of detailed equipment and process models, MPOS can span major system discontinuities, typified by the mine-plant interface, to allow the estimation of final mine and plant product specifications.

(This paper reviews the reasons for and the principles followed in designing and constructing complete new surface works at the mine of the Zinc Corporation Limited, Broken Hill, New South Wales, and describes the layout, plant, buildings and services.)The Zinc Corporation mine produces high grade lead, silver and zinc sulphide ore. Lead and zinc concentrates are sent by rail to Port Pirie, where the lead is smelted and the zinc concentrate is shipped to Tasmania, England and other overseas countries.Some time ago consideration was given to the advisability of sinking an additional shaft. For some years the old main shaft had been working at full capacity and developments underground had indicated that the mine would eventually be capable of an output greater than that which could be handled through the shaft. It was therefore decided to sink a new main shaft and the site chosen was in footwall country 900 feet south of the old main shaft. The reason for the move south was so that the new shaft would be opposite the centre of gravity of the ore-bodies at depth. The size of the new shaft is 27 ft. ,6 in. x 15 ft., and the work was put in hand early in 1936.It was intended to haul the whole mine output through this shaft, which was 1,600 feet from the mill then operating. An extensive conveyor system thus became necessary unless a new mill was built near the shaft. The Velvet gold orebody (153 Koz Au) is located near the Kanowna Belle gold deposit in the Boorara Domain of the Kalgoorlie Terrane, a subdivision of the Archaean Eastern Goldfields Superterrane (Swager et al, 1990). Gold mineralisation at Velvet is hosted within an intrusion of intermediate composition that broadly follows a sub vertical hanging wall splay of the Fitzroy Shear Zone.Velvet was discovered in 2003 during an underground exploration drilling program targeting potential strike extensions to the Kanowna Belle deposit. Diamond drill hole KDU1595 returned a downhole intercept of 36 m grading 4.6 ppm Au approximately 500 m west of the deposit and at a vertical depth of 700 m below surface in the immediate hanging wall of the primary Kanowna Belle host structure, the Fitzroy Shear Zone. Subsequent drilling completed following the initial discovery, from both surface and underground collar positions, failed to replicate this result.In 2014, KDU1595 was resurveyed gyroscopically and the mineralised intercept correctly located. Additional drilling was undertaken to follow-up the repositioned discovery hole. Challenges included poor drilling angles through the Fitzroy Shear Zone, excessive deviation during drilling and the unknown geometry of the target. Navigational drilling helped to successfully penetrate the Fitzroy Shear Zone and in April 2015, drill hole KDU3234 returned a significant downhole intercept of 45 m grading 5.6 ppm Au.Additional drilling success resulted in a decision to develop a 600 m drive to serve as a dual-purpose access for further exploration and mining. This was a potential risk considering that the orebody geometry was unknown and all significant drilling results were clustered within a 50 m × 50 m panel. Development commenced in June 2015 and the first ore cut taken in April 2016. Geological mapping and structural interpretation, together with multi-element and spectral analysis of drill samples has enabled several other target areas to be identified for exploration. The Velvet mining area is critical to continued production at Kanowna Belle. This study explores two evolving 3D surveying technologies, photogrammetry and laser scanning, and applies them to deformation monitoring of rock faces and mine highwalls. A quantitative analysis focused on 3D coordinate determination is performed. Furthermore, a qualitative assessment directed at the practicality and viability of each system operating near a rock face or in a mining operation is undertaken to reveal one systemÆs deficiencies over the other. Two photogrammetric and four laser scanning surveys aimed at optimising accuracy and precision within a short period of data acquisition are conducted on the rock face at Organ Pipes National Park, Keilor, Victoria. The accuracy and repeatability of each survey is determined using a combination of iWitness photogrammetric, and Cyclone laser scanning software. The 3D coordinates of targets placed on the rock face are determined by triangulation and resection principles within a bundle adjustment. The coordinates determined by each system are then compared in a 3D transformation. Controlled deformation conditions are established to determine the precision to which each system can detect movement in the rock face. An object of known dimensions is placed on the rock face to simulate deformation. The relative orientation of images taken for the pre- and post-deformation photogrammetric surveys provide an overall 3D point accuracy of 1.255 mm and 1.804 mm respectively. A 3D transformation shows discrepancies of less than ¦22 mm (RMS) between the geometry of the photogrammetric and laser scanning models. Both systems are able to detect the simulated deformation to a precision of 50 mm. This work also identifies how to obtain millimetre accuracy for 3D coordinate determination of rock faces, thereby providing a quality data set for surveyors, geotechnical engineers and mine geologists. Photogrammetry is shown to be a mobile, time and cost-effective technique that is more amenable to mining operations than terrestrial laser scanning. However, both systems demonstrate that they are capable of detecting movements that may lead to failures in the rock face, and possibly endangering human life. The implications are significant for surveyors, geotechnical engineers and mine geologists working in mining operations where enhanced safety conditions, increased productivity and lower operational costs are important considerations.

A thermochemical model is developed to study the two-stage smelting reduction process for ironmaking without post-combustion. Steady-state multi-material and heat balance equations are solved simultaneously to study the effect of metallisation, slag basicity, coal rank and heat loss on consumption rates of coal, ore, flux and oxygen and production rate of slag to produce hot metal of a given composition, tapped at a given temperature. The model is applied to the commercial data for a COREX-plant producing a wide range of hot metal compositions, tapped at different temperatures. The computed rates of coal, slag, flux, ore and oxygen were found to be close to the reported ones, but an exact match could not be obtained. It is found that a four per cent change in metallisation brings changes the coal rate by five per cent, flux rate by six per cent, slag rate by eight per cent and oxygen rate by 13 per cent, while a ten per cent change in basicity changes the coal rate by ten per cent, flux rate by 13 per cent and oxygen rate by 22 per cent. Further, it is found that an increase in metallisation decreases the coal rate and export gas. At a given per cent metallisation, the coal rate and the export gas are lowest for anthracite compared to all other types of coal.

The mineralogy of nickel slags from the flash smelter of Western Mining Corporation Ltd. at Kalgoorlie was studied. Residual magnesium silicates in the sulphide concentrates raise the melting point of the slag and result in the formation of magnesium-rich olivines. Addition of lime lowered the melting point, and, in slowly cooled slags, resulted in the formation of a pyroxene.Magnetite and sulphides were also present in all slags.The converter slags contained an olivine near fayalite in composition, together with wiistite, magnetite, and a little sulphide.Accretions from the hearth of the flash furnace were largely composed of magnetite with subsidiary olivine similar in composition to those of the flash furnace slags.Wall deposits, however, were largely composed of nickel ferrite and nickel-iron olivines.

Coal seam gas (CSG) exploration and development requires the abstraction of significant amounts of water. This is so because gas desorbtion in coal seams takes place only after aquifer pressure has been reduced by prolonged pumping of aquifer water. CSG waters have a specific geochemical signature which is a product of their formation process. These waters have high bicarbonate, high sodium, low calcium, low magnesium, and very low sulphate concentrations. Additionally, chloride concentrations may be high depending on the coal depositional environment. This particular signature is not only useful for exploration purposes, but it also highlights potential environmental issues that can arise as a consequence of CSG water disposal. Since 2002 L&M Coal Seam Gas Ltd and CRL Energy Ltd, have been involved in exploration and development of CSG in New Zealand. Anticipating disposal of CSG waters as a key issue in CSG development, they have been assessing CSG water quality along with exploration work. Coal seam gas water samples from an exploration well in Maramarua closely follow the geochemical signature associated with CSG waters. This has helped to identify CSG potential, while at the same time assessing the chemical characteristics and water generation processes in the aquifer. Neutral pH and high alkalinity suggest that these waters could be easily managed once the sodium and chloride concentrations are reduced to acceptable levels.

A method has been developed for the prediction of the performance of multi-stage grinding-cyclone classification circuits of any degree of complexity on any ore for a wide range of operating conditions. The method involves the simulation of the circuit on a digital computer by means of. mathematical models of the individual units. At present, to establish the characteristics of the ore and the machines in mathematical terms, it is necessary to know the performance of a simple system on the ore for one known feed rate and feed sizing analysis.Further work on the separate identification of the terms defining the characteristics of the ore and the machines may permit the method to be applied directly to the data derived from small scale tests on ores.INTRODUCTIONThe cost of preparing metalliferous ores for concentration processes by, grinding and classification frequently represents a major portion of the cost of treating such ores, and it is necessary both from an economic and a metallurgical point of view that grinding and classification circuits should be operated at their optimum efficiency. It will be realized that the processes carried out in all units in such circuits behave according to physical laws and, if a mathematical representation of the laws applying to each unit could be derived, optimization of the overall process for any given conditions of feed or product may not be difficult.The physical processes in both tumbling mills and hydraulic classifiers are extremely complex and do not appear at present to be amenable to a rigorous mathematical analysis.
