The Kulumadau deposit represents an intermediate-sulfidation epithermal gold deposit (3.8 Mt at 2.3 g/t, Ag:Au = 1). Mineralisation is primarily confined to hydrothermal breccias within pre-existing fault zones, where it is disseminated throughout a hydrothermal matrix comprising chlorite-quartz-adularia-illite-I/S clays-calcite-pyrite. The host sequence represents numerous mid-Miocene pyroclastic flow eruptions within a tectonically active emergent shallow marine to subaerial depositional setting. Subsequent growth faulting was responsible for debris avalanches, which were subsequently cut by reverse faults. Faults were exploited by hydrothermal fluids, with the heightened porosity at the juncture between faults and debris material facilitating boiling of the ore constituents. Fluid inclusion studies suggest that fluid mixing between meteoric fluids and magmatic fluids, accompanied by boiling, were the primary mechanisms for gold deposition. This paper discusses the geotechnical condition of bedding shears and small- and large-scale faults and shears in Archean banded iron formation (BIF) bedrock, based on observations of core and televiewer images. Information that can be collected includes the orientation of defects, infill thickness, strength and material type, defect shape and surface roughness.The spacing and continuity of bedding shears may be critical to slope design where performance is structurally controlled with bedding dipping out of a wall. The intensity of development of the bedding shear is a useful indicator of the amount of shearing a bedding surface has been subjected to. This can allow for engineering judgement to be used in adopting peak or residual shear strengths along defect surfaces when developing the design.The spacing and continuity of bedding shears may also contribute to the blockiness and degradation of a rock mass where the structural orientation is otherwise favourable. Additionally the condition, thickness and strength of infill of major fault structures can affect slope design and performance, depending on orientation.Comparison of the condition of structures observed in core with the corresponding in situ televiewer image has been made to assess what characteristics are most accurately captured by each technique and whether the additional information gathered from using the televiewer technique is justified by the cost. The question of whether the data collected by a televiewer is sufficient to ultimately replace the need for core is considered.CITATION:Baxter, H and Eggers, M, 2013. Molten slags, fluxes and salts play key roles in a wide range of the high temperature industrial process applications, including metals production, refining and recycling, metal manufacturing processes, electrochemical metal production cells, batteries, and efficient heat transfer media. Recognising the importance and significance of fundamental scientific knowledge of these systems, the International MOLTEN Conference series was established to provide a forum to bring together leading academic researchers and industrial engineers to present and discuss the latest scientific ideas and findings, and their application in their respective fields. This article presents an analysis of the research carried out in this field over time in terms of the number of journal articles, fields and slag systems studied and geographical origin of the research.

A simple algebraic method of aligning large scale underground excavations such as a crusher station or workshop or indeed any large cavern or mine layout to the optimal stress condition is outlined. The method uses the stress transformation law to determine how the component stresses vary as the stress tensor is rotated around its axis. The aim is to define the orientations at which the maximum and minimum horizontal stresses occur such that the excavation can be aligned with its long axis paralleling the trend of the maximum horizontal stress leading to the minimum potential for overstressing of the side walls. The physical environment in which the stress field is acting is unchanged. At the design location, the trend and plunge of the major principal stress is unchanged. However, the coordinate system by which the location of the stress field is described is arbitrary and the stress transformation law allows that coordinate system to be rotated to a more convenient orientation and for the component stresses to be calculated within the alterative coordinate system. The stress field is typically described in terms of normal and shear stresses aligned to a north–south, east–west, vertical, coordinate system. In this scenario, there are two orientations in the 360° horizontal plane defined by the coordinate system where the horizontal normal stresses are equal, and at 45° to those orientations, two orientations where they diverge to the maximum extent. Those orientations of maximum divergence correspond to the trend of the maximum and minimum horizontal stresses, usually designated σH and σh, and that is what the algebraic manipulation seeks to determine. This technique is a first pass assessment which relies on a knowledge of the full stress tensor. It is not a replacement for numerical modelling or detailed design, but a tool to guide planning.

The geochemical properties of Kaiata Mudstone and Brunner Coal Measures are evaluated in order to determine their suitability for placement at the proposed Cypress and existing Stockton mines. Correct scheduling of this waste material is needed in order to prevent sulfide oxidation and the generation of acid rock drainage. The Kaiata Mudstone has both acid generating and acid neutralizing properties. Results from this study and previous research from Kingett Mitchell Ltd (2003), indicate that within the Kaiata Mudstone sulphur content decreases with distance away from the Brunner Coal Measure/Kaiata Mudstone contact, while calcium carbonate content increases; sulphur values range from 0.33 to 4.23 wt %; and the acid neutralizing capacity ranges from 0 to 10.4 wt %. The Brunner Coal Measures have a low capacity to neutralize acid and sulphur content is variable ranging from 0.25 to 3.5 wt %. Appropriate control measures are therefore needed for the Brunner Coal Measures and any Kaiata Mudstone within close proximity to its contact. Tests have been undertaken to develop a rapid field or laboratory procedure to define the potentially acid-forming from the non-acid-forming Kaiata material. Results indicate that paste pH, Net Acid Generation (NAG) and Carbonate Bomb tests are suitable. Results from the Carbonate Bomb Test show a strong relationship with the Acid Neutralizing Capacity (ANC) and the Net Acid Production Potential (NAPP), indicating that this method may efficiently determine non-acid forming material in the field within fifteen minutes. Ongoing research includes kinetic column and shake extraction tests. These tests will quantify what trace elements could be leached from the waste rock and provide information on the usefulness of alkaline producing products such as Bauxsol, Limestone and Cement Kiln Dust.

Driven by an increasing need for water conservation, coal mine operators in the upper Isaac River catchment have placed significant emphasis upon the reuse of water. This initiative led to an overall increase in the salinity of mine waters. The ionic composition of this water differs from local stream water in that concentrations of sulfate are higher than average stream concentrations by ten per cent, while concentrations of bicarbonate and calcium are lower. When this water is discharged into ephemeral streams in semi-arid environments there is potential for this increased salinity and altered ionic composition to impact upon the ecosystem processes mediated by micro-organisms in river sediments.We have measured nitrification, denitrification and methanogenesis rates in a series of lab experiments using sediments from Isaac River catchment streams and found that salinity affects these processes in different ways and to different degrees. Process rates were shown to differ seasonally between samples taken from the same location and habitat type and also between different habitat types at the same time and location. Both aerobic and anaerobic process rates were higher in surface sediments and it is likely that this activity is associated with surface biofilms. Furthermore, we have shown that the ecosystem processes we have measured are limited by the availability of carbon in the sediments.The management implications of these findings for mine releases into ephemeral streams will be discussed.CITATION:Kerr, J L, Vink, S and Beyer-Robson, J, 2013. The Yaojialing zinc-gold polymetallic deposit is a newly discovered, large skarn deposit in the Middle-Lower Yangtze metallogenic belt, East China. It is located in the transitional zone between the Tongling uplift block and the Fanchang faulted basin. It is mainly hosted in the contact zone between early Cretaceous granodiorite porphyry and Carboniferous-Triassic limestone, or occurs in limestone xenoliths within the intrusion. Skarn and stratabound massive sulfide orebodies are the primary ore styles. Sulfide ?34SV-CDT values indicate a magmatic sulfur source, in common with most deposits in the Tongling block. Calcite d13CV-PDB and d18OV-SMOW ratios reveal that marine carbonates were the major source of carbon in late-stage hydrothermal fluids. Background The resources of the Gippsland Basin include not only the coal and oil for which it is well known, but also the tourism resource and the quality of life which it offers its residents and visitors. To manage this group of resources requires an understanding and ability to predict the consequences of possible developments. The water of the streams and estuaries as a key component as it is both a resource and the means for transporting wastes from one area to another. To aid in the resource planning process there is a need for models of the estuarine hydraulic processes. This paper describes an appropriate modelling technique. Resource use conflicts may arise from developments in the catchment upstream of the estuarine reach. For example the diversion of water for domestic and industrial use will change the velocity and salinity structure of the downstream estuary. In turn these changes will affect sediment distribution and deposition patterns and may impose stress on the biological communities and ultimately on the fisheries resources and water quality. The manager of an estuarine system may have expertise in ecology, hydraulics or another of the specialist disciplines involved, but commonly will not. The manager will identify needs for resource and development and the broad options required to satisfy them. The manager will use these studies as the basis for his/her selection of the option for execution. Thus a model for'use by the manager of an estuarine system must have the following properties: (i) The model must be sufficiently accurate to throw up all the likely options. (ii) The model must be capable of being run by the manager, interactively, to answer `what if' questions. This requirement implies a simple code andhardware limited to a personal computer or possibly a desk top work station. (iii) The model must be robust so that unrealistic input oes not generate apparently useful output, and no output is generated for cases where the model is not designed to give results. (iv) The model must be capable of being used as part of a modelling system comprising models of all the geographic and demographic components

The Taharoa ironsand deposit covers approximately 16 km2 and is located 144 km south of Auckland on the west coast of the North Island, New Zealand. The heavy mineral-rich sands predominantly contain titanomagnetite, ilmenite and hematite, along with lesser amounts of amphiboles, pyroxenes, and feldspars. Throughout the Taharoa mine site 142 samples were collected of which approximately 25 samples were used in mineralogical analyses of the magnetic, heavy non-magnetic and light non-magnetic fractions. Mineralogical and petrographic analyses confirmed the high abundance of homogeneous magnetite and magnetite containing ilmenite exsolution lamellae which have oxidised to hematite. A limited number of sand samples were collected from Taranaki beaches. Petrography reveals exsolution textures of magnetite and ilmenite (now hematite), and homogenous magnetite grains similar to those observed at Taharoa. Petrographic analyses from previous research projects were also closely investigated in order to make mineralogical comparisons from along the west coast of the North Island and with other potential source areas. The origin of detrital magnetite grains along the west coast of the North Island is generally presumed to be the eroded volcanic cones of the Egmont volcanoes and active and dormant volcanoes of the central North Island. Electron microprobe analyses of magnetite grains from Taranaki beach samples reveal TiO2 values of between 1.5 and 120 per cent. MgO and A12O3 contents also vary widely from 0.75 to 6.5 per cent. This large variability may reflect different volcanic eruptions, the presence of exsolution textures or alternative source areas for these magnetite grains. Geochemical results from the Taharoa mine site correlate with the Taranaki beach samples suggesting that the Egmont volcanoes are certainly one source area. Variability in XRF results, especially Fe and Ti contents (9.04 - 59.22 and 0.80 - 4.64 respectively), from the magnetic and heavy non-magnetic fractions likely reflect the detrital nature of this deposit.

The Gippsland Basin is unique in Australia in that it is a major resource based industry centre within a sensitive and special environmental context supplying Melbourne, a major urban/industrial environment with most of its energy 'on-line'. The environmental effects of the supply systems are generally local and mostly affect only those who are directly or indirectly dependent on the upstream systems. The major urban metropolis which is served remains largely unaware of the environmental impacts of the system upon which it is dependent, except when specific attention is drawn to them as in the case of the Latrobe Valley Outfall, algal blooms in the Gippsland Lakes, etc. This paper discusses the environmental context within which the energy industries operate, the environmental legislative framework which applies, the likely environmental impacts and some solutions. The energy resources of the Gippsland Basin occur in an area where the physical environment exhibits a wide variety of inherent energy states in its physical and biological regimes. The off-shore regions of the oil and gas platforms has to be able to withstand the wind and wave energy generated in a shallow sea in a confined waterway lying athwart the main current and climatic stream. The coastline includes the delicately balanced quiescent environments of Corner Inlet with its 'wilderness' tourism industry and the powerful surf and long shore drift and dunes of Ninety Mile Beach.

Since the Eocene, New Guinea tectonics have been driven largely by the south-westerly-directed collision of accreted arc terranes with the northern margin of the Australian Craton, and subsequent westerly-directed transport of these exotic terranes by left-lateral strike-slip fault systems. The subduction of the Solomon Sea plate beneath north-eastern New Guinea in the mid- to late-Miocene led to magmatism and related gold-copper porphyry and epithermal mineralisation in the Maramuni arc and the formation of the Frieda River, Nena, Wafi-Golpu and other deposits.The development of the world-class porphyry and epithermal deposits in the Medial New Guinea magmatic belt, including Grasberg, Ok Tedi and Porgera, is localised by dilational zones formed about the intersections of north-easterly-trending, reactivated basement faults and north-dipping reverse faults related to the southward progression of the Papuan fold belt during the Late Miocene to Pleistocene. These deposits probably formed during short mantle-derived magmatic episodes in zones of regional isostatic uplift, which are attributed to the delamination of the lithospheric mantle beneath New Guinea.CITATION:Garwin, S L, 2015. General recognition of the potential benefits of utilizing advanced technology has focussed public attention on the organisation of tertiary education. This has produced a situation where opportunities exist for significant changes to be implemented. The challenges to Mining education in this environment of change are analysed with respect to the setting of education objectives, the role of centres of education, course structures and student access to courses. The scope of the analysis includes formal courses for professional education and technical training, and programmes for continuing education and postgraduate research. Previous significant advances in mining technology illustrate the importance of encouraging the establishment of an extensive involvement with mining education. Education cannot be the sole responsibility of professional academic organizations; significant industry participation is essential. Methods of achieving this interaction are discussed. Major changes in techniques available for disseminating information provide a significant incentive to assess the relevance of existing course structures and restrictions on student access to courses. Establishment of a less rigidly progressive system of education is discussed with respect to the development of the full potential of computer based learning. This will expand the availability of mining education to include remote locations. The practical feasibility of such changes and recognition of the value of education as a commercial resource could also increase overseas involvement in Australian mining education. Benefits of such changes and problems that may develop if accreditation systems are not also changed to take account of new technology are outlined.
