Improving the Sustainability of Primary Metal Production - The Need for a Life Cycle Approach

In a continental environment, sediment mobilisation, dispersion and deposition are mainly controlled by mass gravity and streamflow processes. Alluvial sedimentary systems have an important economic value because of their capacity to host mineral resources. In the Hamersley Province, alluvial iron deposits (including the well-known detrital iron deposits and channel iron deposits) play an increasing role on the commodity market. Alluvial deposits exploration is challenging and generally involves geomorphologic and stratigraphic field studies, as well as expensive exploratory surface sampling and drilling. We applied a new surface processes modelling technique to investigate iron rich material, ie the erosion product of bedded iron formations -dispersion in the Hamersley Province. LECODE is a 3D-parallel surface processes forward modelling code designed to compute surface flow and solve erosion, transport and sedimentation on the geological time scale. The code offers new quantitative ways to better understand how sedimentary deposits develop in intra-continental and channel environments. Here we show that our integrated forward model is capable of opening a window to the construction of sedimentary architectures, including facies distribution, deposit thickness and development of heterogeneities such as mineral traps over the modelled domain. The model results represent 1 Ma of surface evolution and are validated through comparison to published paleovalleys map and known occurrences of iron ore deposits. This numerical modelling approach allows for the first time to track alluvial materials from source to sink through time, test existing geological models and faithfully reproduce the first order distribution of alluvial iron deposits in an area of interest. This work strongly suggests the presence of iron rich alluvial deposits reserves under cover, in unexplored detrital fans in the Fortescue Valley. This method, potentially coupled with sediment geochemistry and basin analyses studies, has the potential to maximise alluvial iron deposits exploration success, while reducing exploration cost and associated environmental impact.CITATION:Duclaux, G, Salles, T and Ramanaidou, E R, 2013. Ore-bearing intrusions in the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB) were examined from nine mines: Boshekul, Nurkazgan, Kounrad, Borly, Aktogai, Koksai, Baogutu, Tuwu and Erdenet. The intrusions are diorite, granodiorite and tonalite with SiO2 contents ranging from 58 to 75 wt per cent, and show mildly fractionated rare earth elements (REE) ([LREE]N/[HREE]N = 2.7–4.7) – light REE and heavy REE – and varying Eu anomalies ([Eu]/[Eu]* = 0.58–1.4). The ratios of Sr/Y vary from 7.9 to 115 and the contents of Y from 4.6 to 23.9 ppm. The parental magmas of the intrusions are intrinsically oxidised. Zircon grains in the ore-bearing rocks from large- and intermediate-sized porphyry Cu deposits show high Ce4+/Ce3+ ratios characterised by 65–422 at Boshekul (>4.1 Mt Cu), 76–480 at Kounrad (>4.8 Mt Cu), 90–280 at Aktogai (>12 Mt Cu), 80–250 at Erdenet (>11 Mt Cu) 74–370 at Nurkazgan (>3.9 Mt Cu), 100–210 at Koksai (>1.6 Mt Cu), and 71–340 at Tuwu (~2.0 Mt Cu). In two small deposits, the ore-bearing rocks display low values of Ce4+/Ce3+; Borly (0.6 Mt Cu) ranging from 28 to 158, and Baogutu (0.6 Mt Cu) from 29 to 113. The Ce4+/Ce3+ ratio of 120 distinguishes large intermediate-size deposits from small-size deposits. In its industrial days, Hong Kong’s mining industry was thriving, benefitting from the mineral occurrences that are related to the regional Mesozoic igneous and hydrothermal activities.Hong Kong was unique in the mining sector as it was so small in landmass but with such a rich variety of commodities discovered. There are records of commercial exploitation of tungsten, iron, lead, silver, beryl, graphite, quartz, feldspar and kaolin in Hong Kong before 1981. Of these, most of them are located in the New Territories.The Lin Ma Hang lead mine was operated in the 19th century by the Portuguese and was abandoned in 1958. The Needle Hill tungsten deposit was discovered in 1935 during construction of the Jubilee Reservoir. The Ma On Shan iron mine, which operated for 70 years between 1906 and 1976, was the largest mine in the history of Hong Kong. The Mui Wo lead-silver mine on Lantau Island can be traced back to the Ming Dynasty 400 years ago. West Brother Island, which extracted graphite from 1952 to 1973, was levelled in the 1990s to make way for the development of the airport at Chek Lap Kok.Nowadays, these mines are disused and abandoned, but this extended abstract reviews the legacy of the mining industry in Hong Kong to understand the impact that it had on techniques, the economy and culture.CITATION:Chu, J C T and Chan, J S-L, 2015. "An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Otago Schist belt of southern New Zealand hosts widespread orogenic gold deposits. Erosion of these orogenic gold deposits has led to the formation of numerous placer deposits distributed across and beyond the host schist belt. Numerical modelling of crustal scale deformation and geomorphic evolution has defined the key tectonic features that have controlled the severance of detrital gold deposits from their sources. Tectonic activity over the past 20 million years, during development of the modern Pacific-Australian plate boundary, has severed links between some placers and their sources. Detrital gold was transported south from the Otago Schist source region in two different river systems in the Miocene. Mesozoic orogenic gold deposits shed gold into rivers that flowed to the south. These rivers were terminated by the rise of north-west-trending basement ridges at the boundary between weak schist crust and strong greywacke crust, and the ridges were controlled by pre-existing faults at that rheological boundary. In contrast, rising mountains close to the developing plate boundary in the Miocene were the locus of new orogenic gold deposits hosted in extensional faults. These gold deposits were rapidly exhumed and contributed detrital gold to orogen-parallel Miocene rivers that flowed to the south-west. Pleistocene deformation on mainly north-west and north-east orientations, and associated river capture, has severed the links between these Miocene orogenic deposits and downstream detrital gold.CITATION:Craw, D and Upton, P, 2015. Water in mining, mineral processing and metal production on a life cycle basis has been at the top of agendas for various industries, government agencies, research organisations, academic institutions and communities. As a result, a number of water footprint assessment methodologies have been developed. However, their practical applications in mining and mineral processing industries with specific case studies are still rare.A key objective of the Minerals Down Under Flagship is to contribute to the long-term sustainability of the Australian mining and mineral industries. Researchers in the Mineral Futures theme have developed robust assessment methods to evaluate the impact of mining and minerals technology development on the environment. The future of mining and the mineral industry is strongly linked with its sustainability - better water management strategies will need to be implemented.Life cycle assessment (LCA) has been a recognised method for measuring the environmental impacts of products, processes and services. It provides a scientifically sound method of comparing products and processes using a common basis and identifies so called æhot spotsÆ and opportunities for reducing environmental impacts. The water footprint of mining, mineral processing and metal production using an LCA basis is still scarce in the literature. Research methodology is now being applied in detail for copper, gold and nickel. A primary focus has been the relationship between ore grade and water use for which mathematical models are being developed. These types of models provide inputs for LCA of mining and mineral processing plants and can identify water saving opportunities through scenarios and process route analysis.CITATION:Northey, S and Haque, N, 2013. Approximation of Surface Area of Fines in Blast Induced Fragmentation The surface area of fragmentation, especially in the finer size fractions, is a useful property to characterise the mechanisms of rock breakage. In the past, researchers have made assumptions with regard to the shape of fragments in order to estimate surface area, such as that all fragments are the same shape or all fragments are spheres. Often these assumptions were developed with inappropriate measures and returned considerable variability and error for the calculation of surface area. This paper reports a model to estimate fragmentation surface area from sieve sized raw data and a density measurement, with experimental validation down to a size fraction of -45 + 38 ?m in a range of rock types. After characterisation of particle shape, a range of fragment shapes was found to be in each size fraction. Nevertheless, in the ?2 sieve series the average fragment mass, volume and the size fraction standard deviations could be predicted reasonably accurately. Ellipsoid geometry was used to describe particle shape. Using these parameters and the number of fragments (also predicted) in each sieve size the individual surface area of each fragment was simulated.

For stockpile design, the flowability and structural interfaces are critically dependant on the stress conditions throughout the pile. Historically, the predictive methodologies for stress determination have been too conservative, which adds inefficiency to the stockpile reclaim interface selections, especially for live reclaim stockpile systems. In addition, accurate pressure profiling throughout stockpile is essential to correctly design the stockpile support structures, which are buried within the stockpile. Such buried structures include trestle legs or columns to support load-out conveyors or the roof of bulk storage sheds. Improved methodologies with respect to the development of the hoop stress condition which exists in material ædrawn-downÆ within the stockpile has been developed. This hoop stress approach has significantly improved the live capacity prediction to over 90 per cent accuracy and improved rathole structure prediction within live reclaim stockpiles. Additionally the methodologies in estimating the vertical and circumferential stress variation acting on buried stockpile structures have been significantly progressed, with experimental testing shown good agreement with the theory.CITATION:Williams, K C, Roberts, A W and Prigge, J D, 2013. Despite the recovery of approximately six million ounces of alluvial gold from the West Coast of the South Island, New Zealand during the last 140 years, a great deal of this having been obtained via sluice boxes and riffle tables, there has been little advance in riffle table technology during this period. In this paper contemporary riffle table design and current operational practices are examined. Studies of gold loss to undersize tailings are described. In addition recommendations derived from recent research carried out in North America are contrasted with gold saving strategies adopted by West Coast miners.

Critical decisions in iron ore project evaluation and production are based on global and local spatial estimates of primary mineral deposit properties (such as in situ geochemical grades) and geometallurgical responses (such as screened, washed or concentrated product yields and grades), which are derived from limited sample data. These spatial estimates are typically made using classical geostatistical techniques, which fundamentally assume that the attributes of interest behave additively. This assumption is generally appropriate for æprimaryÆ variables but æresponseÆ variables may behave non-additively and therefore their direct linear estimates may be biased.In this paper an existing additivity testing mechanism is used to quantify the bias resulting from direct linear estimation of a non-additive iron ore attribute. Data from a magnetite project are used to determine the circumstances under which such biases may be of material impact. Epithermal deposits (Au or Ag dominant, ± base metals) form within ~1 km of the surface in volcanic belts, both arcs and rifts, with the different tectonic settings reflected in distinctly different characteristics. Within arcs, deposits are typically intrusion centred and commonly associated with hypogene advanced argillic alteration, both in lithocaps and as halos to shallow or proximal portions of some veins; such alteration is coupled with processes that form porphyry Cu-Au deposits at depths of ~1–3 km. Introduction of metals is related to the subsequent phyllic-stage overprint; if this fluid rises to the level of the lithocap or into epithermal veins, Au mineralisation with Cu or Ag may occur, associated with sulfate minerals or muscovite. By contrast, Au-rich (both low Ag:Au ratio and bonanza grade) colloform quartz veins form at shallow depths in volcanic rifts, typically within a few hundred metres of the surface, with clay halos and topped by silica sinter if the palaeosurface is preserved. The geologic variability in volcanic belts, including host rocks, structures and hydraulic gradients, means that many epithermal deposits vary from the end-member features of the principal styles. Effective exploration requires familiarity with end-member styles as well as potential variations, plus the mineralogical indicators of palaeotemperature (eg evidence for erosion depth, fluid flow channels). The formation of Kiruna-type deposits has been ascribed to either immiscible iron phosphate melt separated from silicic magma or precipitation from magmatic-hydrothermal fluids. The early Cretaceous Ningwu volcanic basin in Eastern China contains tens of Kiruna-type iron deposits. The orebodies are mainly hosted within the top zones of subvolcanic dioritic intrusions and along the contacts between these intrusions and adjacent volcanic rocks/strata.The orebodies are commonly associated with widespread brecciation and wall rock replacement. Magnetite formation was closely associated with extensive hydrothermal alteration that may extend kilometres, with both vertical and horizontal zonation. Field and textural data indicate that magnetite formed slightly later than albitisation but coeval with apatite and actinolite. Elemental analysis of magnetite and apatite from ores shows distinct features to those as igneous accessary minerals in the host dioritic intrusions, suggesting a genetic relationship to magmatic-hydrothermal processes. Magnetites have elevated TiO2 (up to 5 wt per cent) and V2O3 (up to 0.7 wt per cent), which implies that they are derived from incipient high-temperature magmatic fluids. It is concluded that the Kiruna-type deposits in the Ningwu basin most likely formed from high-temperature magmatic-hydrothermal fluids. The emplacement of dioritic intrusions into a subvolcanic setting likely plays a critical role in the development of Kiruna-type deposits.CITATION:Zhao, X-F, Zeng, L-P and Li, J-W, 2015.
