"This paper presents a case history in the design and construction of high-capacity drilled shafts for the iconic New York Wheel presently being constructed along the St. George area waterfront in northern Staten Island, New York. Although the site is located in an area that offers views of the Statue of Liberty, the Manhattan skyline, and New York Harbor, the variable and challenging subsurface conditions at the site and the structural loading requirements for Wheel erection and service conditions presented geotechnical design and construction challenges. The paper focuses on site and subsurface conditions, drilled shaft design and construction details, results of Osterberg-cell and lateral load testing, and load test data analysis and evaluation.PROJECT DESCRIPTIONThe proposed 630-foot (190 m) -tall New York Wheel (the Wheel) is projected to be one of the tallest observation wheels in the world. Upon completion, the Wheel will be capable of carrying over 1,400 passengers in its 36 capsules. The Wheel site is located along New York Harbor offering views of the Statue of Liberty, the Manhattan skyline, and the New York Harbor; see Fig. 1. The Wheel structure is sited along the waterfront, and served by a 3-story terminal located south of the Wheel in the eastern portion of the site and having a footprint area of about 34,250 sq-ft (3,180 sq-m). A 4-story parking Garage, with a footprint of about 112,840 sq-ft (10,480 sqm), is to be constructed south of the Wheel in the central and western portions of the site.SITE AND SUBSURFACE CONDITIONSThe site’s close proximity to the New York Harbor presented geotechnical challenges because the site is located in an area that was once beyond the historic shoreline of Staten Island. The site is an about 350,000-sq-ft (32,500-sq-m) parcel generally bounded by the Richmond County Bank Ballpark to the southeast, the 9-11 Memorial to the east, Bank Street to the north and northeast, and Richmond Terrace and an associated retaining wall to the southwest and south. A 50-ft (15-m) -wide New York City Transit Easement, with an active on-grade service area and tracks, is located in the southern portion of the site. See Fig. 2 for site location and approximate location of the Wheel foundation footprint."

Hecla?s Lucky Friday Mine is a deep, underground producer of silver, lead and zinc in the Coeur d?Alene mining district of northern Idaho. Main access into, and production from, the mine is via the Silver Shaft, a 5.5-m (18-ft) diameter, concrete lined shaft sunk by J.S. Redpath to an original depth of 1,890 m (6,200 ft) in the early 1980s. The shaft is divided into four compartments (Fig. 1), with sets made of 225 mm x 175 mm (9 in. x 7 in.) hollow structural section (HSS) steel buntons and 150-mm x 150-mm (6-in. x 6-in.) HSS dividers spaced every 4.5 m (15 ft) down the length of the shaft. Two skip compartments on the east side of the shaft are equipped with 125-mm x 150-mm (5-in. x 6-in.) HSS steel guides and 9-t (10-st) skips with three deck trailer cages for men and materials. The west side of the shaft is divided into a manway, and a fourth compartment that was originally designed for a service cage. Shaft services consist of a 250-mm (10-in.) a compressed air line and 150-mm (6-in.) sandfill line along the south side of the shaft, and 250-mm (10-in.) discharge (gray) water and 150 mm (6 in.) fresh water lines on the north wall. The mine?s primary 13.8 kV power lines, as well as communication lines are located on the west wall of the shaft. The production hoist is a 3.7-m (12-ft) diameter, double drum, double clutch, 2,238 kW (3,000 hp), direct current unit equipped, at the time, with thyristor drives. The 30-year-old drives would prove to be problematic during the rehabilitation project, leading to an upgrade to modern ABB drives later in the project, after the shaft rehabilitation was complete. The shaft had been subjected to the typical wear and tear of 30 years of operation, including intermittent sandfill and muck spills, and, in the lower areas, some corrosion. During those 30 years, the west compartment, originally designed for the service cage, could only be accessed from a work deck on top of the skips or from the manway.

"Based on the complicated geological production conditions and abnormal strata behavior of the fully mechanized caving face No. 102 in the Xinyang Coal Mine, we analyze the breaking and forming process of distinguishing key block structures in close spaced coal seams. This analysis establishes an integrated mechanical model of these distinguishing structures. Furthermore, the horizontal force TAB generated by downward key blocks A and B is quantified, as is the Pressure PG exerted by key block B on caved gangue. Finally, the interaction mechanism is revealed. Analysis of the results using Mathematica reveal the following: 1. Both TAB and PG exhibit approximately inverse relationships to coal pillar width b; 2. TAB exhibits an approximately exponential relationship with mining height M of which the base is greater than 1; 3. PG exhibits an approximately arctangent relationship with mining height M. Combining these results with field observations, we conclude that the area in the vicinity of supports 100#–120# in the upper area of working face No. 102 is the likely zone of abnormal strata behavior. Thus, this area was classified as a key control area. Based on these results, the graded support control technique is proposed. Application of this technique in the field resulted in a reduction in the rate of hydraulic support system malfunction from 47% to 7% in the key control area. In addition, during times of periodic mining pressure, the roof caving height value never exceeded 0.3 m and the maximum spalling depth never exceeded 0.2 m. Overall, the results indicate that this new technique has markedly increased the stability of surrounding support rock material. IntroductionClose-spaced coal seams are widely distributed in China, and mining proceeds from the uppermost to the lowermost seam (Zhang et al., 2008). In the case of coal seams in close proximity, a particular set of risk factors becomes pertinent. These include disturbance of lower seams during the mining of overlying ones and the decrease in mechanical stability of lower coal seams following repeated movement of key blocks in main coal seam roofs. This inevitably results in behaviour such as heavy wall spalling and support damage to fully mechanized caving faces in lower-lying coal seams, which necessitates a significantly increase in the measures to support surrounding rock material (Zhang et al., 2010; Huang et al., 2013; Xie et al., 2013)."

SWISHER and ~urkdogan' have determined the solubility of oxygen in a iron. They found it to lie between 7 and 10.5 at.-ppm at 881°C. Using earlier work on the permeability of oxygen in bcc iron,' they arrived at the following expression for the diffusion coefficient of oxygen in bcc iron (k = Boltzmann's constant, T = absolute temperature): where The present authors3 have estimated the activation energy QD for the diffusion of oxygen in bcc iron in two different ways from various experimental data.2'4"6 In the first method QD + QS (QS = heat of solution for oxygen in bcc iron in thermodynamic equilibrium with solid FeO) was determined either from data on the reduction of FeO with hydrogen4 or from measurements of the internal oxidation of silicon in a iron.5 Using an estimate of QS from investigations of the oxygen solubility in 6 iron2 (in thermodynamic equilibrium with molten FeO) Q = 0.97 ev or Q~ = 1.06 ev were obtained. From the magnitude of these values it was concluded that oxygen migrates interstitially in bcc iron and that consequently the activation energy QD for diffusion of oxygen has to be identified with the migration energy E~ of the oxygen atoms. Therefore, for a second estimate of QD from the diffusion coefficient of oxygen in 6 iron at 1450" ~,~ we used the theoretical expression:3 (a = length of elementary cube edge, m = mass of interstitially diffusing atom, sM = migration entropy), applicable to diffusion via the octahedral interstices in bcc lattices. Taking sM = 3.8 k (migration entropy of carbon in a iron), one gets Q = 0.90 ev. Hence, in Ref. 3 Q = (0.98 *0.1) ev was proposed as a plausible value for the diffusion energy of oxygen in bcc iron. sM + 9 (9 = solution entropy for oxygen in bcc iron) can be determined from permeability measurements.4 Using the above-mentioned estimate for QS , the following expression for the solubility c (atomic concentration) of oxygen (in thermodynamic equilibrium with solid FeO) in bcc iron was derived: From [4] the solubility of oxygen at 881°C in a iron is calculated to lie between 0.6 and 12 at.-ppm. Experimental data is given for several natural minerals on the load required for the fracture of single specimens over a very wide size range. The experimental results are compared with published data, such as for coal specimens from 30 to 64 in. in size. Correlations of the specific energy (per unit mass) required for fracture with specimen size are given as functions of specimen shape and the experimentally observed load-size relationships. These correlations are discussed with reference to comminution theory. Comminution, through compression or impact, can result only if sufficient force, or energy, is applied to a specimen of a given size. The relation of specimen size to force requirements has not been adequately considered previously. For single particle fracture, it was previously shown 1 that the specific energy (energy, e, per unit mass, M) at fracture of single glass spheres was inversely proportional to the product size modulus, k, as indicated in the equation: e/M = C/k [1] This was found true not only for numerous glass specimens of the same nominal size but was true for all nominal sizes tested from 1/8 to 1 in. Also, it was observed that the smaller spheres required a greater specific energy at fracture than the larger spheres and consequently had a smaller product size modulus. However, the relationship giving the required fracture energy as a function of specimen size was not further elaborated upon. This paper will extend the development of the feed size effect on specific fracture energy for brittle materials. SPECIFIC ENERGY-FEED SlZE RELATIONSHIPS FROM PREVIOUS DATA For the particular glass spheres tested in the previously described experiments,' it can be shown, as on Fig. 1, that the specific energy varied inversely as the 4/3 power approximately of the feed size, F, in the span of nominal sizes ranging from 1/8 to 1 in. The load at which a 3-in. diam glass sphere (a crystal gazer's ball) was broken was within the range predicted by an extrapolation of this energy-feed size relationship. The present status of the National Bureau of Standards program is that many magnetic tapes of analog data have been recorded in four major mines. Each mine uses different types of equipment. In addition, some surface measurements of noise have been made at two additional mines. Two types of recordings have been made: (1) broadband measurements for spectral plots and (2) narrowband measurements for amplitude probability density (APD) plots. Only data from one mine (Robena #4) has been processed and was, presented at this workshop. The short-term goals are: (1) finish processing data from the other mines, (2) establish or reduce measurement system uncertainties, (3) put Robella report into final form for distribution, and (4) hold a review to determine what has been done, to distribute and to interpret the preliminary data, and to determine what still needs to be done. Long-term goals are: (1) complete final reports on each of the mine trips, (2) establish techniques for predicting noise in mines already visited and establish uncertainty bounds for these predictions, and (3) establish techniques for predicting noise in mines that have not been visited (but that use similar equipment to those visited) and also establish uncertainty bounds for these predictions. The Kencana underground gold mine comprises two world-class epithermal vein deposits located in the North Maluku province of Indonesia on Halmahera Island. The K1 deposit has a recent extensive mining history, whilst development of the K2 deposit is in progress. Kencana epithermal vein zones have a relatively simple planar geometry dipping 25 to 45¦ towards the East and extend 400 to 600 m along strike and down dip. True width ranges from 1 m to 20 m. Economic gold grades are generally associated with two distinct mineralisation styles: Main Zone û continuous material characterised by classic epithermal vein textures including crustiform/colloform chalky white quartz- adularia sulfide banded and brecciated veining typically grading 10 to 40 g/t Au. Bonanza Zone û semi-continuous identifiable zones within the Main Zone. Characterised by brecciated quartz-adularia sulfide banded vein æginguroÆ material typically grading 80 to 200 g/t Au. Associated with this æBonanzaÆ zone are gold grades averaging around ten times higher than the surrounding Main Zone. At the resource evaluation stage, these deposits are typically drilled on approximately 25 m by 25 m spacing. This drilling density is usually adequate to allow robust estimation of global resources, including the lateral definition of æBonanzaÆ style mineralisation. It appears intuitive at the resource definition stage to separately model the æBonanza ZoneÆ using deterministic methods such as manual interpretation and wireframing. Inevitably, however, such deterministic methods result in a simplified version of reality. Whilst the geologistÆs interpretation of the overall vein volume and lateral extent of æBonanzaÆ mineralisation has proven to be remarkably accurate, close-spaced sampling and mapping of the K1 orebody has shown that this style of mineralisation exhibits extreme short-scale geometric and spatial variability. A consequence of this short-scale geometric and grade variability is the significant uncertainty with reporting these Resources and Reserves at relatively small reporting time periods such as monthly production periods. The mining method employed at Kencana often involves extracting the full width of the mineralised vein with multiple mining passes over several months. In the past it has proven difficult to achieve accurate production budgets and forecasts at Kencana as any given mining schedule based on the resource model is acutely sensitive to the quantity and location of æBonanzaÆ material. Moreover, the degree of uncertainty or risk associated with a mining schedule significantly increases as the reporting time period becomes smaller. A further deficiency of deterministic methods for geometric modelling is the inherent lack of ability to derive confidence intervals for quantifying uncertainty and risk. The use of conditional simulation techniques can help overcome this deficiency. Geostatistical conditional simulation techniques have been applied at Kencana in an attempt to model and quantify geological and grade variability in the upcoming K2 orebody based on the experience to date with mining the K1 orebody. At Kencana, conditional simulation has provided a successful means to quantify uncertainties and risks associated with various data densities and reporting time periods. The results of this project have provided managers and planners with a clearer understanding of the likely variances and risks associated with predicting gold metal production at key reporting time periods based on data at the resource model level of resolution. With corporate requirements to adhere to mining budgets/quarterly schedules, this type of analysis allows a more scientific approach to estimating grade uncertainty in the mining schedule. Until now this has been difficult to quantify due to the extreme gold metal variability. The availability of this type of analysis allows a time-efficient rationalisation on redesigns of the mining shapes and effective communication of the likely uncertainties involved.

The Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC) is the largest manufacturer of iron ore pellets in Canada and its customer base covers North American, European and Asian steel producers. The company operates a mine, concentrator and a pelletizing plant in Labrador City, Newfoundland and Labrador, as well as port facilities located in Sept-Iles, Quebec. It also operates a 418-km (260-mile) railroad that links the mine to the port. IOC has approximately 1,900 employees. Its shareholders are Mitsubishi Corp. (26.18 percent), Labrador Iron Ore Royalty Income Fund (15.1 percent) and the international mining group Rio Tinto, which is its major shareholder (58.72 percent) and operator, with activities in more than 40 countries throughout the world. The IOC was incorporated in 1949 and by 1954 it had completed the Quebec North Shore and Labrador (QNS&L) rail line. IOC began mining in Schefferville, Quebec by 1954 and closed those operations down in 1982. In 1962, IOC commissioned the present day Carol Project consisting of mining, concentration and pelletizing facilities in Labrador City, Newfoundland. In 2004, IOC shipped its one-billionth tonne of ore on the QNS&L Railway. In 2005, IOC celebrated 50 years of mining history. The company expressed an interest in reducing the amount of oversize material (>1 m x 1 m x 1 m or 3.2 ft x 3.2 ft x 3.2 ft) being produced and its subsequent downstream effects, including in-pit sorting and reduction, damage to mobile equipment and significant delays in the loading pockets and the primary crushers. To achieve this goal, an oversize reduction project was undertaken by the mine that, to date, has significantly improved upon baseline measures. One key approach used to reduce the amount of oversize was the implementation of thicker emulsion. The introduction of a thicker emulsion provided more resistance to the forces created by dynamic water and reduced the infiltration of the emulsion into the cracks and fissures of the rockmass, resulting in reduced amounts of oversize and more consistent fragmentation throughout the muckpiles. Additionally, a significant reduction in nitrates leached into the mine water discharge has been realized. To determine the effectiveness of the oversize reduction project, IOC used a first-of-kind technology to assess fragmentation presented to the shovel at the digging face. A digital vision system (DVS) was installed on one of the shovels to capture images that were stamped with GPS locations. A large population of digital images were analyzed to produce a robust fragmentation distribution baseline that was used as one of the mine key performance indicators (KPI). Changes to blasting practice were subsequently measured against the baseline KPI to assess effectiveness.

"For moisture samples, the International Standard for iron ore sampling states the following: Moisture samples shall be processed as soon as possible and test portions weighed immediately. If this is not possible, samples shall be stored in non-absorbent airtight containers with a minimum of free air space to minimise any change in moisture content, but should be prepared without delay. ISO 3082 (2009)Prescribing what to do is of course easy. Putting it in practice is, however, a little more problematic.The iron ore industry has seen quite some changes in the last ten to 15 years, such as: a large increase in the volume of seaborne trade new ore types and blends coming onto the market new mines, processing plants and port facilities producing more and loading faster an increase in wet processed ore products a dramatic rise and then equally dramatic fall in the iron ore price followed by a recent recovery.All of the above have had an effect on sampling facilities. The large increase in volume coupled with ambitions such as labour efficiency, safer operations and higher precision has driven the installation and retrofitting of automated sampling and robotic sampling preparation plants in order to keep up with increased quality control.Designers of sampling facilities are invariably instructed to build plants that comply with ISO 3082. In general this means that the plants are compliant in respect of the number of primary increments, gross sample masses and sample division rules. The clause at the beginning of this abstract is mostly overlooked as it only appears in a section (4.1) describing the basic requirements of a sampling system.An error of 0.1 per cent in moisture changes the value of 1 Mt of iron ore at US$50/t by US$50 000. At 700 Mt/a of Australian iron ore exports, this is US$35 M. Frequently, errors from 0.5 to 1 per cent in moisture measurements are encountered.In comparison an error of 0.1 per cent Fe is US$0.081 (US$50/t and 62 per cent Fe base) per tonne, that is US$81 000 per Mt or about US$51 M for the same Australian annual iron ore exports.It is somewhat mystifying that we in the ISO Technical committees spend extraordinary energy (= money and time) on improving measurement techniques, whilst the big costs are in sampling errors. A technique was devised by the Bureau of Nines to recover coarse (plus 1.7 m) North Carolina phosphate now discarded as waste. Concentration utilizes the difference in particle sphericity between the relatively flat calcite and the rounded phosphate pebbles. Sizing, treatment in a continuous hydraulic classification system, and grinding upgraded a 17.0-pct-P205 reject to 24.5 pct P205 with a phosphate recovery of 63 pct.

The Upper Triassic Leigh Creek Coal Measures which include a number of seams of sub-bituminous black coal are preserved in four small intramontane basins. The largest is Telford Basin, 1,000 m in thickness. The coals, of variable thickness and quality, are mined by open cast mining methods and utilised for generation of electricity at Port Augusta. The combined proven and indicated reserves are about 100 million tonnes.

"Uma Oya Multipurpose Development Project is under construction in Sri Lanka. This project involves 2 Rolled Concrete Core (RCC) Dams connected through a tunnel currently under construction by Drill and Blast method. The water is transferred from first diversion dam to the 2nd regulatory dam and from which, it will be transferred through a 14 km headrace tunnel to the top of a 650 m deep drop shaft that feeds the high pressure water to an underground powerhouse and turbine chamber for generation of 120 MW of electricity. The Headrace and Tailrace tunnels are being excavated by two 4.4 m diameter double shield TBMs. The headrace tunnel has already passed 5km milestone and is mined in hard rock, while the tailrace tunnel has been completed in rather weak and fractured ground. This paper will review the history of the project along with the geology of the site. The operation of TBM in headrace tunnel will be discussed in more detail, focusing on the challenges of excavating through very strong and abrasive quartzite and gneiss on this site, as well as reaches of tunnel in high inflow of water reaching 400 L/Sec. INTRODUCTION This paper aims to introduce the Uma Oya Multipurpose Development Project (UOMDP) as a hydro mechanical project in Sri Lanka, targeted generating hydro-electric power, transferring water for irrigation purposes and controlling seasonal devastating flood. This project lies in the south-eastern part of the central highland region of Sri Lanka (Figure 1). The main part of the project is located in the south-western part of the Badulla district in the province of Uva. The south-eastern end of the project site is in the central west of the Moneragala district (province of Uva). Bandarawela is the largest urban setting within the project area, located halfway between the upstream and the downstream ends of the planned hydropower plant and combination of dams, tunnels, and downstream facilities. The Multi-Purpose Project Of Uma Oya is planned to convey water from Uma Oya to Kirindi Oya Basin for hydroelectric energy generation includes Puhulpola RCC Dam on the Uma Oya river, Dyraaba RCC Dam on the Mahatotilla Oya river, a conveyance tunnel from Uma Oya to Mahatotilla Oya (L=3750m), a long feeder tunnel from Mahatotilla Oya to Kirindi Oya. The feeder (power) tunnel Lot consists of a headrace tunnel (L=15554m), the surge shaft (L=200m) and tank on the upstream of the vertical shaft, a vertical shaft with steel lining (L=650m), an underground powerhouse and a tailrace tunnel (L=3650m)."

"Detailed design of an extensive deep mixing (DM) scheme using the Cutter Soil Mixing (CSM) technique was completed for foundation support of mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls for Kitimat Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) at Bish Cove, British Columbia, Canada. The design was based on the provision of soil-cement structures, constructed in highly variable subsurface conditions that consisted of thick deposits of fine-grained soils overlying granular soils, and required to meet project-specific performance criteria, to support the MSE walls. The design, consisting of rectangular CSM panels constructed to form barrettes connecting to a longitudinal wall of continuous CSM panels, was configured to manage the distribution of stresses and strains that could be developed within the soil-cement structure.The results from 2D finite element analyses were used to determine the necessary arrangement and properties of the CSM panels to accommodate localized areas of relatively high shear, tensile and compressive stresses within the soil-cement structure. The relationships between unconfined compressive strength and elastic modulus for fine-grained and granular soil-cement structures obtained from the Bish Cove data were compared with published references and were found to be significantly different in the higher strength range materials.BACKGROUNDDeep Mixing design was completed for the development of the Kitimat LNG Facility located in Bish Cove, British Columbia, for support of two relatively high MSE walls and associated bulk earthwork operations. Deep mixing was necessary to treat the very weak native deposits in-situ to meet project performance requirements and physical constraints without the need for significant excavation and disposal work. The DM design was undertaken on the basis of adoption of the CSM technique for in-situ ground improvement of the native foundation soils which consisted of very soft to soft fine-grained marine deposits and loose to compact sandy silt to silty sand, overlying dense sand and gravel (Fig. 1). The DM area is located immediately upslope of the Bish Cove beach area, and is “L” shaped in plan, approximately 300 m long by approximately 28.8 m wide (parallel to the beach area) and 165 m long by an average width of 21.0 m (perpendicular to the beach area). The depth of the DM ranged from about 5.0 m to 30.7 m with typically 2.0 m embedment into dense granular soils. Details of the design philosophy, including an overview of the DM design and the project background information are presented by Li et al. (2014a). Details of the construction aspects of the Kitimat LNG deep mixing are presented by Wilson et al. (2014)."

"The Block 43 Project is the future home of the Paul Allen Institute for Brain Science located just off the southern shore of Lake Union in Seattle, Wash. The South Lake Union (SLU) district experienced considerable development over the last 10 years and Vulcan, Inc., which is headquartered in Seattle, is at the forefront of this transition. Once a light industrial/residential location, SLU has transformed into a hub of medical technology comprising new residential units and mixed-use buildings. Malcolm Drilling Company, Inc. constructed four shoring projects for Vulcan in this vicinity over the last year, beginning with Vulcan Block 44, which consisted of 42,000 sq ft (3,902 sq m) of soldier pile and tieback wall to support a below-grade parking facility. Block 44 construction began in February 2013 and ended in mid-April. The feature project, Vulcan Block 43, was in planning stages at the time and began construction in late fall 2013.Awarded by GLY Construction of Bellevue, Wash., in September 2013, Block 43 was the most complex of the block projects performed by Malcolm. Block 43 featured dewatering and ground improvement components along with a water-tight secant pile wall. Following the commencement of Block 43, Malcolm also began work on Vulcan Block 52 in December 2013. Block 52 consisted of 43,000 sq ft (3,995 sq m) of conventional shoring in conjunction with dewatering of 8 ft (2.4 m) of excavation located below the water table. The final Vulcan project was Block 45, which started in January 2014 for Turner Construction of Seattle and consisted of 41,000 sq ft (3,809 sq m) of conventional shoring and required dewatering to complete the final 15 ft (4.6 m) of excavation.Scope and Subsurface ConditionsBlock 43 involved a wide variety of drilling applications for the building to be constructed and properly founded. The primary scope of work involved shoring support for an underground parking structure requiring excavation of approximately 82,000 cu 3 yds (62,694 m ) of soil. The cuts for the excavation were up to 43 ft (13.1 m) in depth, and the excavation was bounded by city streets as well as the South Lake Union Light Rail on its perimeter. In order to excavate beneath the water table, an extensive, deep dewatering system was required to drain the upper fill and reduce the impact of the pressurized aquifer located beneath the excavation. In addition, drilled rigid inclusions, along with compaction grouting, were required for foundation support of the future structure."

"INTRODUCTION The expansion of the Suez Canal, which runs between the Mediterranean and Red Sea, is at the top of Egypt’s economic agenda. The £8 billion development plan includes a new channel alongside the existing one which will double the number of ships able to pass each day and several tunnels to connect the Sinai peninsula to the main part of Egypt. The Egyptian government ordered three new tunnels under the Suez Canal in the area of Port Said as part of the Canal Region Development Plan. The three tunnels will contribute to the North Sinai expansion, helping to create a vast industrial zone and completing the coastal road extension from Rafah to Nuewiba. Two of these three tunnels will be allocated for roads and the third for railway traffic. A further part of the Suez Canal development mega project are an additional six tunnels in the area of Ismailia and Suez. The focus of this paper is on the two road tunnels in Port Said and will give an overview of the project and the challenges encountered regarding the technical complexity and tight time schedule both in its design and execution. PROJECT OVERVIEW The tunnels will be built in the area of Port Said (see Figure 1) which is the most northern part of the Suez Canal.The road alignment connects the Port Fuad Road in the east bank of the Suez Canal to the Port Said-Ismailia highway in the west bank with a dual carriageway section. Each of the carriageways has two lanes. The bored diameter of the 2.8 km long road tunnels is 13.050 m and will be driven with two Mix-Shield TBMs. The distance between the two tunnel axes is planned with 42.5 m (discussion about a reduction are ongoing). The width of the Suez Canal is around 340 m at upper level and around 170 m at the bottom. During the TBM drive, three main geological layers are expected. Below a depth of around 40 m in a very soft clay layer, a dense to silty sand layer is predicted. Within the sand layer another silty hard clay is expected in different depths with variable thickness. After finishing the excavation of the road tunnels, the same TBM will be used for the railway tunnel. The lowest points of the road tunnels will be located 59 m below the surface (tunnel invert to surface) and only 18 m of ground cover exists between the tunnel crown and the Suez Canal invert. Minimum ground cover over the tunnel crown is approximately nine meters at the tunnel portals."
