"SJVN Limited successfully commissioned its Rampur HEP (412 MW) in 2014. The project has been planned to operate in tandem by directly utilizing the Tail Water of SJVN’s prestigious Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station 1500 MW located upstream. The initial filling of voluminous water conductor system of RHEP with 10.50 m diameter, 15 Kilometer long Head Race Tunnel, involved more than 1.5 million m3 of water. The filling operation of such a large diameter tunnel constructed in young folded Himalayas which always offer less ideal sites for tunnelling and their subsequent operations under pressurized conditions is worth sharing with tunnelling fraternity. The paper covers meticulous planning, execution, precautions taken, and performance monitoring during filling process keeping in view the fragile geology, low rock cover zones, shear zones in close vicinity of thickly inhabited areas, squeezing zones, hot water zones encountered during excavation.1.0 RAMPUR HYDRO POWER STATION IN BRIEFRampur Hydroelectric Project (412 MW), is located in Himachal Pradesh (India). This project is a downstream development of Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station (1500 MW) constructed on river Satluj and commissioned during 2003. Both the projects today are now successfully working in tandem. The upstream NJHPS has been constructed on the left bank of the river while the downstream Rampur HPS is located on right bank of the river (Figure-1).The major length of HRT of Rampur project lies on right bank of river before it crosses under the river in its initial reach (Figure-2). The main features of the project are as below:• 10.50 m diameter 15 km long HRT ending in a 155.75 m deep, 38.00 m diameter surge shaft.• 3 steel lined pressure shafts, 5.4 m dia, 211-220m long.• Surface valve house 69 m long x 10.50 m wide x 23 m high housing 3 No. butterfly valves• 3 No. surface penstocks 5.4m dia 368-382m long, bifurcating into six penstocks, each of 3.80 mdia. to feed six generating units of surface power house 158 m long x 24.50 m wide x 48 m high, with Francis turbines each of 68.67 MW capacity."

Background The mine is located in Ebensburg, Cambria County, PA. Cambria County is located within the Allegheny Mountain section of the Appalachian Plateau Province. The geologic structures in the mine area included folds, faults, joints and cleats in the coal. These geologic structures seem to have genetic relationships with the Allegheny Front (lannacchione and Puglio, 1979). The mine's geologic structures have been influenced mainly by Ebensburg Anticline and Wilmore Syncline (Watson, 1979). Current longwall panels lay along the western limb of the Wilmore Syncline oriented south 30° west. Surface topographic relief in the area is less than 152 m (500 ft) and overburden thickness varies from 183 to 244 m (600 ft to 800 ft). The coal seam in the mine is part of the Lower Kittanning Formation. The thickness of the B-seam is the subject of discussion. It varies from 1.2 to 1.5 m (48 to 60 in.) and consists of two parts. The lower part is 1.1 to 1.2 m (44 to 48 in.) of soft coal and the remainder is bony coal. The coal seam dips slightly from 0° to 6° to the east-south direction. Panel entries are driven 61 m (200 ft) wide, consisting of three 5.5 m (18 ft) wide entries and two pillars 24.4 x 30.5 m (80 x 100 ft) centers. The mine has a history of cutter roof problems in the entries (Fig. 1) that has delayed the advance rate of entry development considerably and the cost of maintaining those entries is very high due to the requirement of very heavy artificial supports (Fig. 2). Due to excessive convergence in the headgate, installation of additional support and often resetting of steel beam, to provide enough clearance, in these entries imposed additional delay during the retreat of the longwall face, as the shearer cuts coal adjacent to the headgate and shield support at the headgate needs to advance under the steel beams (Fig. 3). Soil and vegetation development were studied on abandoned mine sites near Velva in Ward County, North Dakota. The sites studied were 1, 7, 17, 30 and 45 years old since abandonment; unmined sites were also studied to provide measures of comparison. Species diversity was the highest at unmined sites (114) and lowest at the I year old site (26); sites 7, 17,30 and 45 years old had 37, 52, 43 and 68 species, respectively. Stand ordination revealed that site ages were the most important in influencing species diversity and composition. Stand-environ-mental complex ordinations encompassing 53 variables showed topographic variables to be the most important followed by site ages. Rates of nutrient accumulations were as follows: organic carbon 13.1 g m-2 yr-1; nitrogen 2.5 g m-2 yr-1; phosphorus 0.01 g m-2 yr-1; potassium 0.49 g m-2 yr-1. Carbon-nitrogen ratios showed the widest range for 1 year old sites (5-40) but 70 percent of the 45 year old sites showed values below 15 which were com-parable to the unmined mixed grass prairie sites. Species distributional diagrams are provided to show their habitat preferences which may be helpful in formulating species prescriptions for revegetation.

No presente trabalho foi proposto uma análise da eficiência de desfosforação de uma mistura padrão M1 e outras três misturas, onde foi realizado um aumento progressivo da %FeO em sua composição química (5%,10% e 15%). Além disso, esta mistura padrão M1 foi testada utilizando-se CaO em duas granulometrias diferentes, uma mais fina (M1A) e uma mais grosseira (M1). Os testes experimentais foram realizados a uma temperatura de 1400°C, com agitação de 450 RPM, em um forno de resistência. Para a análise das propriedades da escória, foram realizadas simulações através do software de termodinâmica computacional FactSage 7.2 e análises de imagens obtidas da superfície do cadinho ao final dos experimentos no software Quantikov. A mistura M1 apresentou melhor desempenho do que as misturas onde foi adicionada uma maior quantidade de FeO, visto que foi observado que à medida que a %FeO nas misturas é aumentada, a eficiência de desfosforação diminui. Além disso, a utilização de uma granulometria grosseira mostrou-se mais eficiente do que a granulometria fina, devido a maior aglomeração causada por essa. Esses resultados corroboraram as equações utilizadas para calcular o Fator de Desfosforação (FDeP), calculado para correlacionar as propriedades termodinâmicas das misturas desfosforantes e a eficiência de desfosforação.

INTRODUCTION Gwinnett County, Georgia, is a part of the rapidly expanding metropolitan Atlanta Georgia area. Located approximately 48 km (30 miles) northeast of Atlanta, Gwinnett County has a current population in excess of 600,000 and is projected to reach a population of 1,200,000 by 2025. As a part of the County’s master plan to supply drinking water for the expanding population and to increase system reliability, the Gwinnett County Public Utilities Department undertook the Shoal Creek Raw Water Intake and Pump Station Project. Figure 1 shows a vicinity map for the project. Prior to construction of the Shoal Creek Raw Water Intake and Pump Station Project the County had a single raw water intake to feed water from Lake Sidney Lanier (Lake Lanier) into a filter plant for processing into potable water. This project together with a newly constructed water filter plant provides Gwinnett County additional capacity and system redundancy to prevent interruptions to the drinking water supply. Lake Lanier is a man made reservoir with over 800 km (500 miles) of shoreline and was constructed by the Army Corps of Engineers in the 1950s for hydro electric power generation, flood control, and navigation benefits for the Chattahoochee River. Over time, Lake Lanier has become an increasingly important source of drinking water for the metropolitan Atlanta area. This paper focuses on the primary underground construction and lake tap components of the project including a 42.7 m (140 ft) deep pump station shaft 24.4 m(80 ft) in finished diameter transitioning to a 6.1 m (20 ft) finished diameter shaft, a3.05 m (10 ft) finished diameter by 19.8 m (65 ft) deep intake shaft constructed in an average of 21.3 m (70 ft) of water, and a 190.5 m (625 ft) by 3.05 m (10 ft) finished diameter modified horseshoe tunnel connecting the two shafts. This raw water intake system, in conjunction with the incorporated pump station with 8 pumps and dual1,829 mm (72 inch) pipelines, provides a system capacity of 1,091,062 m3/day(240 MGD) to two water filter plants and is expandable by the addition of pumps to1,500,210 m3/day (330 MGD). Parsons provided design and construction management services for the project. The $29.6 million contract to construct the project was awarded to W.L. Hailey &Company. Notice to proceed was given August 6, 2001 and substantial completion was achieved on January 20, 2004. Value engineering changes adopted for the project contributed to completing the project at a final cost of $28.8 million.

The Mons Cupri Cu-Pb-Zn deposit is situated within a complex Archaean volcanic sequence dominated by rhyolitic fragmental rocks. This sequence is underlain by a 150 m group of rhyolitic ash flow tuffs with minor conglomerate and sandstone, and is overlain by approximately 180 m of dacite and andesite flows. The Mons Cupri sequence itself consists of several elongate or circular rhyolite domes, flanked by rhyolitic fragmental rocks ranging up to 400 m in thickness away from the domes. The lithology of clasts (typically 1 cm to 1.5 m in size) provides strong evidence that the flanking fragmental unit was derived by explosive eruptions associated with the rhyolite domes. An approximately 15 m thick shale horizon, bleached and silicified at its base, overlies both the rhyolite domes and the frag- mental unit. A south-dipping chloritic pipe-like body, with near-surface dimensions of 1,000 by 250 m and narrowing at depth to produce a cone-shaped cross section, lies within the rhyolitic frag- mental rocks about 250 m north of the largest rhyolite'dome in the Mons Cupri vicinity. Its east west elongation parallels that of the rhyolite dome. Ghost fragments indicate that the material in this fissure is a severely chloritized derivative of the rhyolitic frag- mental unit. This study was carried out in a bid to survey Ganboke gold mine in Pala, Mayo-Kebbi Province, southwestern Chad. The Ganboke mine is now being prepared for investigation and development, and the research sought to perform rock properties tests of relevant rocks through its geological survey, rock mass evaluation, and in-situ and laboratory tests and analyze the stability by the means of limit equilibrium method, thereby suggest appropriate methods to design the pit slope and individual benches in Ganboke mine. Targenting GS1-GS1' section with the depth of 180 m and GS2-GS2' section with the depth of 150 m in the survey area, we set the height of the bench at 10 m and 15 m, and the angle of bench at 60o and 70o, respectively, and then reviewed the stability for dried condition and saturated condition. The result of examination indicated that it would be appropriate to set the bench height at 10m and the bench angle at 60o in developing the mine slopes concerned. Concernant la section de GS1-GS1' avec la profondeur de 180 m et la section de GS2-GS2' avec la profondeur de 150 m dans l'aire d'étude, nous mîmes l'hauteur du gradin à 10 m et 15 m, et l'angle du gradin à 60o and 70o, respectivement, et alors nous avon reconsidéré la stabilité pour la condition sèche et la condition saturé. Le résultat d'examen a indiqué que il pourrait être propre de mettre l'hauteur du gradin à 10m et l'angle du gradin à 60o en développant les pentes de la mine concerné. Das Ergebnis der Untersuchung anzeigte daß es würde angemessen sein zu setzen die Bqnkhöhe an 10m und das Bankwinkel an 60o in der Entwickelungen vom Bergwerk be-teiligt.

The Gooseberry Mine is located 38 krn (24 miles) by road east of Reno, 13 km (8 miles) south of Interstate 80. The mine was originally discovered in 1906 and remained in the control of the Martin family of Fresno, who worked the-property with Mexican ranch hands for 68 years. Westcoast took over the property in 1976 from Apco Oil Corporation. During the time the Martins operated the mine, a 305 m (1,000 ft) inclined shaft was sunk with drifts developed on eight levels exceeding a total of 3,000 m (9,000 ft) in length. It is interesting to note that for over one -half century all development ore was stockpiled. West- coast, the United States mining subsidiary of Home Oil Company Ltd., Calgary, Alberta, completed sinking another vertical shaft to the 396 m (1,300 ft) level. Development work between 122 m and 305 m (400 ft and 1,000 ft) levels has proved the existence of a fine ore body over 300 m (1,000 ft) long. The silver-gold ore grade is fairly consistent in the vertical section, but copper, lead and zinc may show slight increases with depth. Average width of the ore bearing portion of the vein is 2.5 m (8.3 ft). Stoping is by cut-and-fill method. Average silver values within the ore zone have increased from the 152 m (500 ft) level to the 305 m (1,000 ft) level, although the gold values do show some decrease. It is not possible for the geological staff to predict the depth of the ore. However, several years of ore reserves have been proved in the existing mining areas. Important ore minerals are argentite, native gold, and electrum. Trace amounts of galena, chalcopyrite, and sphalerite are associated with the precious metal mineralization. The vein is mainly composed of calcite and quartz. Mine-run underground ore is dumped from the hoisting skip into a coarse ore bin followed by a jaw crusher, an impact crusher, and a 600 mt (650 st) fine ore bin. The mill has a capacity of 317 mt per day (350 st per day). Two-stage grinding is done by a rod mill followed by cyclones with the underflow sent to a ball mill in closed circuit with the cyclones. Cyclone overflow after conditioning receives a primary float in four 1.7 cu m (30 cu ft) cells and a second stage of conditioning ahead of 24 0.8 cu m (30 cu ft) secondary flotation cells. No cleaning stages are used. Flotation tailings are cycloned for a sand-slime separation with the sands used as underground stope fill and the slime portion to tailing dam storage.

ABSTRACT: In the south of the Island of Gran Canaria (Spain) there appear layers of swelling clays inside volcanic formations of a fonolitic type, down to depths as low as 500 m, with thicknesses of 1 to 3 m. Two tunnels (each of length 1,500 m) have been built in these zones (ignimbrites and swelling clays), work on which started in the ‘70s. The construction has been influenced by phenomena of expansivity and decompression. Presented below are the problems that arose, the field and indoor studies conducted and the numerical optimisation of the lining. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Im Süden der Insel Gran Canaria (Spanien) kommen im Inneren vulkanischer Formationen phonolithischen Typs in Tiefen von bis zu 500 Metern 1 bis 3 Meter dicke Blähtonschichten vor. In diesem Gelände aus Schmelztuff und Blähton begann man zu Beginn der siebziger Jahre, zwei Tunnel von jeweils 1.500 Metern Länge anzulegen. Die Bauarbeiten standen unter dem Einfluss von Dehnungs- und Dekompressionserscheinungen. Der folgende Text enthält eine Darstellung der aufgetretenen Probleme, der durchgeführten Feld- und Laborstudien und der numerischen Optimierung der Tunnelauskleidung. RESUME: Dans le sud de l’Ille du Gran Canaria (Espagne) on a détecté des couches d’argile gonflante dans l’intérieur des formations de roches volcaniques fonolitiques, à la profondeur autom des 500 m, avec épaisseur de 1 à 3 m. On a perforé deux tunnels (de longueur 1.500 m chaque un) dans cettes zones (igniumbrités et argiles gonflantes), chantier qui comenza pendant les 70’. La construction on a influencé pour des phénomènes d’expansivité et de décompression. Dans cette communication on présente les problèmes presentes, les études de chantier et théoriques realicés et l’optimisation numérique développé pour dimensionner le revêtement.

Hexavalent chromium is a widespread environmental contaminant. An Achromobacter sp. strain nominated Ch1 can reduce soluble and toxic chromate to insoluble and non toxic Cr(III) in aerobic cultures, and no Cr(VI) decrease was observed in anaerobic cultures. In contrast with other Cr(VI) reducing microorganisms, Ch1 showed higher Cr(VI) reduction at high pH. Reduction performed under alkaline conditions at pH 7 to 11, and the optimal pH was 10. During the reduction, pH decrease was observed may caused by production of acidic metabolic byproducts from aerobic respiration. In the present study, the ability of Achromobacter sp. Ch1 to reduce Cr(VI) during growth was evaluated with lactate as an electron donor. In NB medium, Ch1 reduced 100% of 24mM of Cr(VI) in 35h, but only 73% of 30mM of Cr(VI) after 48h of inoculation. Reduction was inhibited by metal ions like Ag+, Cu2+, Zn2+, slightly inhibited by Mn2+, and not affected by Mg2+. Results revealed that reduction rate of Cr(VI) also increased with the increasing of concentrations of lactate, and complete reduction was achieved at the concentrations above 40 mM. HPLC analysis demonstrated Cr(VI) reduction was associated with the consumption of lactate. There was a large quantity of dark blue sediment generated in the culture during Cr(VI) reduction by Ch1. Energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis showed that the major element composed the formed sediment was chromium presented as Cr(OH)3 precipitate. The features characterizing Cr(VI) reduction by Achromobacter sp. Ch1 are high Cr(VI) concentrations and high pH.

Present work is a part of developing novel recycling technique for waste printed circuit boards (PCBs) i.e. the liberation of metals from PCBs by organic swelling followed by the treatment of resin to remove/ recover hazardous soldering materials. In order to recover the hazardous metallic constituent lead from the liberated resin, initially the leaching studies were made using fresh solder containing 63.9% Pb and remaining tin. Experimental results obtained in different conditions viz. time, temperature and acidity showed -97.20% of lead dissolution with 6M HNO3 at solid to liquid (S:L) ratio 1:10 (g/mL) and temperature 90°C in 75 minutes. The result of the studies validated with crushed PCBs shows that almost total lead and tin was leached out with 6M HNO3 and 6M HC1 respectively at S:L ratio 1:10 (g/mL) and temperature 90°C within 50 minutes. The results will be useful for the treatment and safe disposal of PCBs resin.

Since the establishment of the standard dust concentration of 2 mg/m3, a strong effort has been made by mining engineers and researchers to provide better dust control equipment and procedures for underground coal mines. Particular areas of success have been control of dust generation by better coal-cutting strategy, better design of water sprays for dust suppression and air movement, use of scrubbers, and improved design of face ventilation systems. A drastic improvement occurred over time such that the average dust concentrations for continuous miner operators dropped from 6.5 mg/m3 in 1968 to 1.3 mg/m3 in 1980 and for auger, cutter, longwall, and roof bolter occupations from 2.7 mg/m3 in 1973 to 1.6 mg/m3 in 1980 (Niewiadomsky, 1983).

This paper may be divided into two main parts: (1) analysis and data to show that Eq. 6 adequately correlates the authors' experimental data, and (2) the assertion that Eq. 20 "should permit scale-up with data taken from one pipe diameter for Newtonian, inelastic non-Newtonian, and viscoelastic fluids, such as dilute polymer fracturing fluids, which produce considerable pressure reductions." The authors might well recommend that this broad grouping of fluid types could be correlated by using Eq. 6 (requiring data from at least two pipe diameters). On the other hand, Eq. 20 is only shown to be adequate for conditions within the range of the present data set. Specifically, predictions by Eq. 20 for diameter scale-up to casing sizes would give larger deviations than implied in Table 2, and scale-up for some other fluids that give large drag reduction could be grossly in error. The description of a class of fluids "which produce a diameter family of straight parallel lines on a log (d?p/4L) vs log (8 v/d) plot. . ." defines a necessary condition for using Eq. 6; i.e., that s shall be constant for each fluid. The proposal that Eq. 20 is applicable to turbulent flow of such fluids is equivalent to saying that the spacing of these parallel lines, with A being constant, will be found to correspond to m = -1.20 for all such fluids. Table 1 shows the values of m derived from data on 16 non-Newtonian fluids. The key statement of this paper is that the diameter exponents "do not vary significantly from . . . -1.20." In statistical terms, this says that the m value for each fluid, which was obtained from all the measurements made on that fluid. has not been shown to be different from the arithmetic mean of the m values for the 16 fluids tested. This implies that the group mean, -1.20, is a more reliable value to use for an individual fluid than is the m value derived from the data on that fluid alone. No statistical test is described to support the key statement that the diameter exponents do not vary significantly from -1.20. Such a test would have to take into account that each individual m value is shown to correlate the pressure gradients for its fluid, with only about 3 percent standard deviation over the diameter range covered. That is, the m value is not the result of a single independent measurement. Thus, it would not be sufficient, or valid, to compare the deviation of one of the m values with the variance of the 16 values of m about their mean. An alternative interpretation of the key statement is that the diameter exponents do not vary appreciably from -1.20; i.e., that using -1.20 does not cause serious inaccuracy. Table 2 seems to be offered in support of such an assertion. However, such a statistical treatment (1) is unnecessary and (2) cannot lead to any valid scale-up generalization. The amount of error introduced by using a 1"wrong" value of diameter exponent — i.e., -1.20 instead of m — is determined by Eq. 6. Three long horizontal holes were drilled from a directionally drilled sur¬face hole at the Emerald Mine near Waynesburg, Pa. The purpose was to adapt the technique of directional drilling for use in draining methane from coalbeds. A 504-m (1,652-ft) long, 76-mm (3-in) diam¬eter, circular arc pilot hole was drilled, using a downhole mud motor, to enter the Pittsburgh coalbed at a verti¬cal depth of 305 m (1,000 ft). The hole was reamed to 222 mm (8-3/4 in) and was cased to a measured depth of 486 m (1,595 ft). Three 76-mm (3-in) diameter horizontal drainage holes were then drilled, totaling 2,909 m (9,544 ft) of horizontal hole. Improvements in drilling methods increased the average drilling rate from 20.4 m (67 ft) to 64.9 m (213 ft) per day. The cost of drilling the directional and horizontal holes (using a Government-owned drill rig) was $1,169,530, a figure inflated by inexperience and by delays caused by lost-circulation problems and fishing operations. An estimated total drilling cost of $960,000 (including rental of a drill rig) for an improved system, was determined by a detailed cost analysis. Initial gas and water production from November 1979 through May 1980 was low because of caving of the horizontal holes drilled in shale near the bottom of the casing.

BACKGROUND AND PROJECT DESCRIPTION A 16.5 kt per day underground molybdenum mine is being developed at Questa in northern New Mexico by Molycorp, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Union Oil Company of California. Small scale underground mining first began in 1920 and large scale open-pit mining was initiated in 1965, but because of the high stripping ratio, surface mining is being phased out. Construction of the underground mine began in 1979, and first production is scheduled for 1983. Full production of 9 Gg of molybdenum per year will be reached in 1984. Access to the mine will be through a service shaft, development shaft, and a conveyor decline. 'The service shaft, 7.3 m in diameter and 396 m deep, will be used for personnel, supplies, development muck, and fresh air intake. It will be equipped with a large, double-deck man and material cage. A double-drum hoist will be used for cage hoisting and will handle up to a 27-t load in balance with a counterweight. Development muck will be loaded into skips in balance and a single-drum auxiliary hoist will provide secondary access. The 396-m-deep, 4.3-m-diameter development shaft will be used for initial mine development, mine exhaust air, and a slick line pass for concrete entering the mine. The development shaft is located 400 m north of the service shaft. Run-of-mine ore will be transported from one of two 1.4-kt storage pockets by a 1.2-m-wide conveyor belt located in the 10°, 1980-m-long, 5.0-m-wide, and 4.6-m-high decline. The decline conveyor belt has a centerline length of 2229 m and a vertical rise of 363 m. It will be powered by four 448 kw motors driving a single drive pulley. There will be two 1.2 m transfer belts on the surface with centerline lengths of 322 m and 542 m. All three conveyor belts will be reinforced with steel cables. On the surface, in addition to the headframes and hoist houses for the two vertical shafts, a large maintenance shop, warehouse, compressor house, change house, main office building and timber framing building have been constructed.

The breakage parameters of phosphate ore were determined by batch first-order grinding studies in a laboratory ball mill according to the procedures described in the text by Austin, Klimpel and Luckie, using a slurry density of 70 weight percent. The results were scaled to five larger mills of 0.56 m diameter by 0.91 m length (2 ft. by 3 ft.), 0.82 m by 1.52 m (3 ft. by 5 ft.), 3.36 m by 7.90 m (11.5 ft. by 25 ft.), 4.41 m by 9.10 m (14.5 ft. by 30 ft.), and 5 m by 11.1 m (17 ft. by 36 ft.), assuming equilibrium ball charges for the full-scale mills. The results were used to predict product size distribustions and capacities for batch grinding in the 0.56 m and 0.82 m diameter mills and open circuit grinding in the 0.82 m diameter and larger mills using a one-large/two-small reactors in series model fitted to the residence time distribution measured in the 4.41 m diameter mill. The simulated results were compared to plant data for ranges of mill capacities. It was found that the simulated product size distributions were in good agreement with the experimental values below the 70% passing sizes, but did not agree so well in the top sizes. The predicted capacities were in approximate agreement with experimental values for the pilot-scale mills, were about 7 percent too high for the 3.36 m and 4.41 m diameter mills and about 25 percent high for the 5 m diameter mill. Use of the Bond method with the measured Work Index of the phosphate ore gave capacity predictions that were 45 to 150 percent too high.

City Water Tunnel No. 3 is being built in order to provide a redundant system for delivering 4,542,500 m3 (1.2 billion gallons) of water per day throughout the five boroughs of New York City. The present tunnels, City Tunnel No. 1 and 2 (Figure 1), were put in service in 1917 and 1936 respectively, and both have been in continuous service. Tunnels No. 1 and 2 can-not be shut down for inspection or repair until City Tunnel No. 3 has been completed. City Tunnel No. 3 has two stages (Figure 1).Stage One is 20.1 km (12.5 mi) long and is presently delivering drinking water to the boroughs of the Bronx and Manhattan. Stage Two consists of the Brooklyn-Queens Tunnel 17.7 km (11 mi) and the Manhattan Tunnel 14 km (9 mi). The Brooklyn-Queens leg is complete and is set to be put in service soon. The Manhattan Tunnel is being constructed and is the subject of this paper. The Manhattan Tunnel (Figure 1) is comprised of three legs: the north, south and east legs. The con-tract includes the excavation of 8,976 m (29,500 ft) of tunnel and the lining of 14,561 m (47,773 ft) of tunnel. The south tunnel, 5,705 m (18,720 ft), was excavated but not lined, under a previous contract. The tunnel ranges from 181 m (600 ft) to 152 m (500 ft) in depth in the bedrock under Manhattan. The tunnel contract also includes the construction of nine new shafts, 161 m (530 ft) average depth, and the completion of a tenth shaft (the previously built construction shaft). The Manhattan Tunnel contract was awarded to the sole bidder Schiavone/Shea/Frontier Kemper Joint Venture (SSF) for $668,532,680.00, on January 31, 2005. The Manhattan Tunnel was designed ?in house? by the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and the construction management was provided by a combined staff of the DEP and a joint venture of Jenny Engineering and URS.

"This paper describes the challenges of mining a sill pillar under various types of paste backfill quality. From 1994 to 2002, Louvicourt mine produced approximately 12,600,000 t grading 3.5% Cu, 1.5% Zn, 27 g/mt Ag, and 0.85 g/mt Au. The mining method is transverse blasthole stoping, mining primary and secondary stopes. The production of this 4,300 t/d operation was accomplished using two mining horizons; from the 655 m level to the 415 m level and from the 860 m level to the 680 m level. The main sill pillar is between the 680 m level and the 655 m level. The second sill pillar is between the 885 m level and the 860 m level representing a quarter of the main sill pillar in size. Since 2002, production has gradually decreased and mining activities are expected to end in mid-2005. The sill pillar production will represent almost 25% of the total mine production. The overall recovery of the sill pillars stopes will be discussed in this paper. To recover the sill pillars, more than 1,500 m of development was planned in or under paste backfill. The first sill pillar stopes under paste backfill were mined out in 2002 with excellent results."
